LOW PROLACTIN - WHAT NEXT When one has a low prolactin, what kind of medication or remedy is she suppose to take to enable her conceive? Jumai, Kano Did you do conduct hormonal tests? Are they low or high too? Any symptoms . How old are you? Is there history suggestive of brain lesion? Low prolactin alone is uncommon and I will advise you repeat the test to ensure the accuracy of the result. Since the main problem is infertility, treating prolactin alone will not solve the problem, see a Gynaecologist for an wholistic approach to the problem.

RECURING MALARIA Am a 34 years old mother of 3. I have symptoms of malaria. I went to a general hospital in Abuja and I was asked to do MP. WD FBS FBC TEST but nothing was seen. While these tests was going on I was given 3 arthemeter injections for 3 days. I am still the same as I was before I visited the hospital. If nothing was seen in the widal and mp test result then what is wrong with me. Doctor, please help me with an urgent answer. Amina Adebayo, Lugbe Abuja. We must remember that arthemeter injection or its combination therapy is not a guarantee of 100% cure for malaria. Also when you take the arthemeter injection it is advisable to combine it with oral sulfadoxine pyramethamine single dose. Also the fact that the mp test was negative does not mean it cannot be malaria, more so when the symptoms are there. I will suggest you see your family physician for further treatment. Options available include the use of quinine tablets or injection.

PERSISTENT DIARRHEA I am a 30 year old mother of four. I always have stomach pain whenever am eating any food and this will make me to stool almost 3 to 4 times after each meal. You will need to see a gastroenterologist for detail history, examination and investigations. Endoscopic view of the GI is paramount. Also test to ensure there is no immune compromise is important. This is important because the diarrhea has been longer than six months. Please, we encourge all who send questions or contributions to include at least their first name and town or city. PERSEVERING IN THE FACE OF OBSTACLES interview by HARUNA GIMBA YAYA (GOMBE)

Hajiya Laraba Ahmed Kawu, is among the only four female permanent secretaries in Gombe State Civil Service. The mother of three was born in 1962 to the family of late Alhaji Ahmed Kawu, Hajiya Laraba hails from Gombe State. She spoke to Tambari on how she rose from Administrative Officer to Permanent Secretary in a maledominated society.

Educational background was born some 54 years ago in Gombe and raised in an average family with several siblings, about 20. I attended my primary school in Jalo Waziri Primary School, then it was seven years study. Then I proceeded to Government Secondary school, Billiri where I had my Forms one to three and we were transferred to Government Girls Secondary School Doma where I had my Forms four and five. I finished in 1980 and secured admission for a two-year pre-degree programme in 1980 at Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto where I eventually graduated with BA History in 1985. I was posted to Rivers State for the mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) but for some reasons I relocated to Kaduna State where I taught in Kaduna Capital School. After my NYSC I returned to my state, the then Bauchi State, and I got employment in 1987 my entry was the Ministry of Information from 1987 to 1990 and engaged in journalism. Then we had the Trumpeter Magazine and I was covering the Sport beat with a man from Plateau State who was coaching me to write sports stories. Later in 1990, I decided to change my cadre to become an Inspector of Local Government in the then Bauchi State and I was transferred to Gombe Area office. It was at about that time that I lost my father. I worked at the Gombe Area office, before Gombe State was created and continued with the same Local Government Inspectorate, supervising the local government expenditure and capital project. But because of the quota system then, I had to be at the Ministry of Information instead of administration where I wanted to work.

I

Career I have been an inspector for local government, an area inspector and a zonal coordinator taking care of about four local governments. When I attained the position of deputy director, then there were four of us in my ministry but not all of us could become director because we had only director for local government, so by the time they picked one of us the rest of us our career had terminated. So I thought, ‘why don’t you change your cadre at least you have prospect’. As I earlier told you, I wanted to become an administrator. I worked for 21 years in the Ministry for Local Government from 1992 to 2011, dealing with figures. So I decided to change my career to General Administration and I placed my application subsequently I got the opportunity to be Director of Administration and Finance. I was given that post in 2011. First you report to the general administration office of the Permanent Secretary, on reaching there I was posted to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) where I worked for almost four years. When I went there, therewere few hands to manage the agency but we were able to mobilize and recruit 10 more people to do the job. Initially there were just the permanent secretary and the Director Administration and Finance (DAF), one store officer and one other one person doing all the job. Passion for children When I went to SEMA, I found it very interesting and I was opportune to work with donor organizations. I have seen a lot of things and I have met a lot of people

MY FATHER, HE WANTED ME TO GO TO SCHOOL AND READ FULFULDE SO AS TO ENHANCE THE LANGUAGE AND DOCUMENT IT. and learnt a lot of things, especially volunteerism, in fact that was what led me to establish a non-governmental organisation, the Ahmed Kawu Heart For Children Initiative, which I started in 2012. We have done a lot of interventions, especially in the Almajiri issues because it is an area that many people don’t touch and others are afraid of joining because of the nature of the ‘tsangaya’ people who are often misunderstood. And they don’t even tolerate it when you make remarks about them. It took us some time to penetrate those officials of the tsangaya schools. Apart from the Almajiris, I have also been helping the orphans and the vulnerable. I pay rent for widows, providing medicare for them and so many other positive interventions. As I was doing that, in 2014, December to be precise, I was appointed as a Permanent Secretary alongside six others by

Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo administration. Parents support for my education My parents have been in close contact with people that have been to school, so it is their dream, especially my mother, to see us educated up to a certain level, because she has seen educated women do a lot of things for others. For my father, he wanted me to go to school and read Fulfulde so as to enhance the language and document it.That was his priority. So they didn’t have objection of me being in school but also they wanted me to be married. Aspirations growing up As a young school girl I wanted to be a confidential secretary; those people typing with typewriters then. I used to see a typist at a veterinary’s office. Whenever I went there as a child to play I saw a man punching the typewriter keys like he was playing with it. So then when you asked me what I wanted to do I, said I wanted to go to school at the end have my own typewriter so that I will be punching the keys. Childhood memories I remember how we made dolls from animal leg bones. We picked small pieces of cloth from tailors’ shops and dressed the dolls which we called our babies. We made a bed for that baby. But as we grew up there were those plastic dolls that don’t have detachedlimbs which our parents used to buy for us. We also played with mud, cooking and frying akara (kosai) and using sand as rice to cook, it was interestingfor us as kids. Then we didn’t watch television at

CO V E R // LARABA AHMED KAWU home, unless when we travelled to Kano on vacation, that was when I went to secondary school, because I always travelled to Kano to spend my holidays and they had a television there. But we had a radio which we gathered around to listen to drama presentations. But in most cases, in the night, our grandparents told us a lot of folktales and stories about Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) and other caliphs. Combining work and home front It was not easy at the beginning, but much easier now that I have mature and reached a certain stage. But when I started working and I had my first child, then with no transport to take me around, it wasn’t easy - if you had money you got a taxi when it’s time to go back home and cook. Though I had co-wives that were cooperative, but it wasn’t easy especially at that time that I was engaged in journalism - going from one place to another to do the job. Also, when I came to the Ministry for Local Government we had to charter vehicles to go to the local governments to do our inspection, it was not easy. Advice to women My advice to them is that they should work hard and be focused. They are lucky, because in present day northern Nigerian our husbands and our families are very cooperative. As such, I don’t see any reason why a woman shouldn’t make herself relevant. Most cherished attribute of my husband I cherish the fact that he is a reserved man and he gives his family all the attention we need.

I LIKE FLAT SHOES A LOT; I HAVE A LOT OF THEM. I ALSO CHERISH MY TRADITIONAL ATTIRES. FOR BAGS I DON’T HAVE MUCH BECAUSE I HARDLY CHANGE MY BAG EXCEPT IT IS GETTING OLD

wherever you are even in your father’s house you have to be patient.Patience is the key and respect is another.

contribute in the upkeep of the family.

Likes and dislikes I hate disrespect; you can do anything for me but when you disrespect me that’s the end of the journey between me and you. Because I respect each and every person and I also respect superiority and hierarchy of job, because it is the hierarchy that brought me where I am. I will not allow any of my staff to disrespect me. I abhor the issue of disrespecting elders, if I work with you even when you are my subordinate as long as you are older than me, I will give you that respect, because I don’t want to be disrespected. I like to respect the feelings and opinions of others because as long as you respect the other people’s opinion you are at peace with everybody; as long as you respect their own feelings you won’t have any problem with them.

Life’s lessons The lessons I learnt about life is that we should be patient; patience is the key to success. What you achieve in life is determined by your level of patience and understanding. You don’t assume; it is not good to assume, in fact it is prohibited in Islam to assume. So whatever you are not clear about you have to ask. If you have problem with somebody sit down and discuss it with him but the bottom line is

Support from husband I got all the support I needed from my husband. And I will tell you that the working woman is a contributor to the family. As working women, we don’t wait for husband to bring everything for us; before the man comes in you are already doing your thing. For the fact that he allowed you to go and work, at least you should

Challenges You know it’s a male dominated society, so as a woman if you want to come up you have to brace up for a lot of challenges. You find your male colleagues adjusting their papers, their appointment dates, they will try to see they block a lot of chances. There are things that women didn’t have the chance to do in those days. It took a long time before you saw a woman permanent secretary or director but nowadays our governments have realized the importance of the contribution of women because you can imagine now we have four permanent secretaries and a lot of women directors. We are hoping the government will appoint more women because they have realized that we have something to contribute.

Best travel destination There are so many destinations that I would like to visit one day. For instance, I want to go to the United Kingdom (UK), the United States of America (USA). And if I may be able, I would like to visit Saudi Arabia once in a year to do the Umrah and after every five years to perform the Hajj, that is my dream. Favourite food I like the

traditional kuka soup (miyan kuka), with burabusko or with tuwon shinkafa and other traditional dishes. Favourite colour I like brown and orange. Best day of the week I love Saturday because it is the day I relax at home with my grandchildren and other members of my family. From Monday to Friday, I am occupied in the office, busy attending to files and attending series of meetings. Advice to younger generation I have one or two advice; firstly, they should read hard because education is the key to any success, because even if you are rich, if you are not educated it is a minus, you find a lot of gaps. Secondly, they shouldn’t be in a hurry, because the youth of nowadays are in hurry to do a lot of things, but they should know that everything has its time. Rome was not built in a day. I am not saying that they should not have dreams, but they should carry themselves slowly and steady, surely it would come one day. Lastly, they should respect their elders. In those days when you saw an elder, we gave them way to pass. But these days if you are passing, you have to be giving way to the youth. It is unfortunate. I suspect is because of lack of home training. Most cherished gifts My children Favourite fashion items I like flat shoes a lot; I have a lot of them. I also cherish my traditional attires. For bags I don’t have much because I hardly change my bag except it is getting old. I just make sure that the bag is black. I hardly change bag because once I do, I end up forgetting one or two things which I dint transfer to the bag at home. How I relax By watching TV at home with the children or visiting friends and catching up on missed events or issues. First and last app I check I check my whatsapp and facebook for updates and messages. My beauty routine I’m not a beauty routine freak. I keep things simple. I just put some white powder on my face and that’s it. For skin, I am very careful what I use on my skin because I react to anything that has vitamin E in it. So, for that reason I use Vaseline only. As for perfumes, I am also allergic to perfumes, I used to use them but found out I was allergic to them, so stopped. I just use mild body spray. I go to the salon for pedicure and I apply henna. I always have henna on, no matter what. Mum’s advice that stuck She always tells me to be patient because every success is surrounded be being patient. Looking back what I would tell a younger me As a youth I trusted people a lot and confided in them. I would tell a younger me to be more patient and careful in confiding and believing in people too much.

INDOOR PLAYGROUND SETTINGS FOR KIDS by JAMILA FREDA DAUDA

D

eciding on how to set up your child’s indoor play centre is a huge decision, funny enough. Unlike how you would think it is easy...so your first thought is where do I start?

Below is a list of key points to consider: 1. Your idea: The very first thing to do is to explore your

concept deeply. Decide on the scale of your project, a budget and make a plan! Also consider what your unique style may be. 2. The location: Choosing a location for the indoor play centre is one of the biggest decisions you will need to make. You would love to choose somewhere spacious, and comfortable for the child. And also where you could monitor him/her/them.

3. Funds: This is when you write down things to buy and then you run a budget and what the costing maybe, how banking it could be for you as a parent. 4. Design: What design and theme you have in mind; do you want an all cartoon character, flowery, colours or glitters. 5. Toys: Time to shop items

and toys to be set and arranged for the kids. Make sure you buy safe and fluffy toys....to avoid kids injuring themselves while playing.

KIDDIES HYGIENE SNACKS AND MEALS YOU SHOULD AVOID GIVING YOUR CHILD with Jamila Freda Dauda

T

hese meals come in handy when you need to feed your ward, but have you really thought about what’s inside those processed convenient foods! Crosscheck the colorful cartooned packages and you’ll find almost as many artificial colors lurking in the ingredients which are really harmful for kids. 1. Pop tarts: “Baked with real fruit” catches your eye on the front of the package, but turn it over and you’ll see a different story. The filling is about 10% fruit. So what’s in the other 90%? More enriched flour, soybean and palm oil, artificial colors, and so much sugar. Which are refined sugar not the real sugarcane. These processed pastries have dextrose, sugar, and both corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup and the toxins in these dyes are known to cause cancer, hyperactivity in children. 2. Fast foods: Majority of kids love fries and hamburgers but it’s quite harmful to their health… especially the ingredients in this Happy Meal which you will find 540 calories, 18 grams

of fat, 0.5 gram of trans fat, 790 mg of sodium etc this meals are usually higher in fat, calories, and sodium than food prepared in our home and then you have complete control over your home cooking, unlike what is prepared at a fast food outlet. 3. Soda: This is usually loaded with sugar, and kids love to have multiple intake of soda. And it should be eliminated totally cause of its coloring, the coloring is toxic. sodas come in a variety of familiar flavours so all you can do is avoid it totally.Advisable your kid should stick with water or milk for the healthiest options. You can add fruit to water to infuse it with flavor if your child wants something different. 4. Ice pops: Kids are attracted by the colors, shapes and cartoons on these store-bought ice pops. Some think these ice pops are made with real fruit and are also fat free. Well reality is they are full of artificial dyes, sugars and in some cases even artificial sweeteners! Evidence is your kids’ tongue after eating/licking one. Best option give your kid

sweet natural fruits... 5. Sugary cereals: Cereals are sadly geared towards KIDS. But the packaging can be deceiving. Most parents don’t take time to read through this ingredient contents, so they buy them thinking they are giving their children something healthy. If you see corn syrup, high fructose or other types of sugar as the top three ingredients then you know it is not a healthy option.Parents should look out for ingredient like whole grains and anything under 5 grams of sugar per serving would be a good choice. 6. Sweetened drinks: These are Boxed juices and pouches, funny how we think these are natural fruits, These fruit drinks are just as bad as soda. If they’re not made from 100-percent juice, they’re the nutritional equivalent of soda without the bubbles. Most brands are also made with high fructose corn syrup and artificial colors just like sodas. Learn to make your own smoothies, not forgetting the healthiest choice should be water. Craftsman style for the living area by JAMILA FREDA DAUDA

C

raftsman style is defined by a natural simplicity and crispness of shape. This Craftsman style arose from the arts and crafts movement that sprouted at the turn of the 20th century. The aim is to create something as functionally utilitarian as it is beautiful, without the extravagance of extraneous styling.

The most important element in this decor is wood, metal i.e. bronze, brass and copper which complements the wood tone. Craftsman furniture is almost never painted, instead showcasing the rich texture of the wood, which is usually oak but can appear in other species.Other colour tones of stone, bark, leaves, even grass are also available.

Other natural colors are acceptable Craftsman style details handmade stuff. No matter the exact shape and size of a given piece of furniture, it will look like it could have been built 100 years ago. So if you are looking for that unique touch and feel of antiqueness, the craftman style is the way to go.

Slay in Capri pants by DORCAS DANIEL

C

apri pants are mostly dreaded because they seem not to be the cutest or most flattering pants to wear for most people. Its tricky nature can make you look frumpy and short when they are not worn properly. However, I don’t suggest you abandon this breathtaking style as it gives a slimming and modern look. It’s all about finding ones that glow your figure when pairing them with the right things. Here are some tips on how to look breathtaking and feel confident in Capri pants.

1) Avoid capris that end at the widest part of your lower leg (midcalf) as this is highly unflattering for those with thick or muscular calves. 2) Dare to wear a longer top if you are an average height or tall on

//

a tapered Capri pant to achieve a unique style. 3) Go for bold colours that make you look exciting and catchy. 4) Stay away from Capri pants with bulky details such as elastic waistbands, big side pocket drawstrings, and large cuffs if you are a plus size because it’ll make you look some pounds bigger. 5) Avoid flat shoes if you have short legs, or you will look stumpy. Instead wear a heel or wedge to elongate your exposed calf. 6) Capri pants gives a fabulous and comfortable option that can be versatile. Just be sure to think through your look to maintain a long leg and sleek silhouette.

B E AU T Y Amazing Health benefits of coconut oil

by DORCAS DANIEL

I

t is revealed that there are over 1500 studies that prove that coconut oil is one of the healthiest foods on the planet with great health benefits that cover the entire human body. Unlike the other long-chain fatty acids found in plant based oils, coconut oil is easier to digest, is anti-microbial and antifungal, smaller in size, allowing easier cell permeability for immediate energy and easily processed by the liver, which means that it is immediately converted to energy instead of being stored as fat.

Below are some benefits of coconut oil you need to know. Prevents Heart Disease and High Blood Pressure The high level of saturated fats in coconut oil does not only increase the healthy cholesterol in your body but also helps to convert the “bad” cholesterol into good cholesterol by increasing the high-density lipoproteins in the body and promote heart health while lowering the risk of heart disease. Cancer Prevention and Treatment The Ketones in coconut are known for helping cancer patients recover by killing the helicobacter pylori bacteria known

as the bacteria that increases the risk of stomach cancer. Even in studies where cancer is chemically induced, the introduction of coconut oil prevents cancer from developing! Improves Memory and Brain Function Coconut oil absorbs easily in the body and can be accessed in the brain without the use of insulin which in return fuels brain cells more efficiently. The Journal of Neurobiology of Aging published in 2004 reported findings that the MCFAs found in coconut oil improved the memory problems in older subjects. Improves Skin Issues Coconut oil is a very great face cleanser, moisturizer and sun screen, but also it can treat many skin disorders like burns, eczema, dandruff, dermatitis, and psoriasis. The fatty acids in coconut oil reduce inflammation internally and externally. In addition the antimicrobial properties balance out the candida or fungal sources that can cause many skin conditions. Coconut Oil for Weight Loss Coconut oil has been proven to shed off fat because of the energy creating abilities it has. It helps to burn fat especially

belly fat by decreasing your appetite. A 1985 study published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health proved that a single injection of capric acid fund in coconut oil shows significant improvements in thyroid function, which helps to lower resting heart rate, and assists your body in burning fat for energy. Coconut Oil good for Hair Care Get rid of dandruff and deeply moisturize dry hair with coconut oil as the fatty acids in it helps to improve these conditions. Use coconut shampoo to improve your hair and use straight coconut oil as an all-natural hair conditioner. With additional information from the internet

BEAUTY CARE Natural ways to whiten your teeth with DORCAS DANIEL

I

am sure everybody wants to have a beautiful smile with white, sparkling teeth since they are among the first things people notice and also a sign of good health as well as confidence and cleanliness. To achieve this, here are some natural ways to get white and welcoming teeth. 1. Floss Your Teeth: Just flossing can easily remove the staining between your teeth and help them to look whiter. Many dentists and hygienists agree that flossing is more important than brushing, so floss twice daily for the best, teeth-saving results. 2. Baking Soda and Lemon:

The chemical reaction of baking soda with the citrus of lemon juice has a smile-brightening effect. They both work well separately but together they are super-effective. Only brush with this solution once per week as it can wear away the tooth enamel if used too frequently. 3. Eat and brush with Strawberries: An enzyme called malic acid and vitamin C in strawberries helps to whiten teeth as it helps to remove surface stains, while vitamin C washes away plaque. Mashing a few strawberries and brushing with the mixture once or twice a week can have positive results. 4. Use Apple Cider Vinegar:

This effectively works as a natural antibiotic and teeth/gum cleanser;it removes stubborn stains on the teeth especially stains due to common culprits like coffee and nicotine (smoking). 5. Coconut oil pulling: Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties so it’s great for protecting and cleaning your gums as well. Simply put a spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it between your teeth for five to 20 minutes, or add a few drops to your toothbrush and brush it on. Another option is to apply coconut oil to a corner of a clean washcloth and rub it on the teeth. With additional information from the internet
