MARGRET OGUNTALA // Educational background I had my primary education in the Saint Williams Primary School, Ilorin, Kwara State. After that, I proceeded to the Saint Clair Grammar School, Ofa, which was one of the best girls’ schools in Kwara State between 1975 and1980. In 1981, I got admission into the University of Benin, where I read Chemical Engineering. I graduated in 1986. Between 1981 and 1986 I had a total of 12-month industrial attachment at various arms of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). I had my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in Kano before going back to Lagos. Career I started work in a Lebanese-owned company, which was involved in the marketing of industrial chemicals. I was the chemical sales executive and rose to the position of a marketing manager. In 1992, I left the company and started my own business. I incorporated a company called Pamsack Nigeria Limited. At that time, we started by doing feasibility study for p paint and plastic manufacturers, ass well as selling industrial chemicals. als. From there, we graduated to having clients and going into other ther areas like fabrication of mechanical anical equipment for Guinness Nigeria Plc. As the company grew, we had more clients and went into other her areas like fire and safety, which wee do for First Bank. Later, I realised that I needed eded to collaborate with otherr engineers because the job in the chemical industry is more in the oil sector. But it is always good to work together to add more value. So I started the environmental consultancy arm of the company and invited a civil and mechanical engineer and started another other company. I joined the Nigerian Society ciety of Engineers in 1995 and did my certification with the Council for the regulation of engineering g in Nigeria. I started with the Association of Professional Men in Nigeria and was the secretary general. Then I joined the Ikeja branch of the NSE and was very active. Within the few weeks I joined them, I was made the chairman for the organising committee for the out-dinner and awards. I wondered how I was going to do it, but I had good mentors. I held that position for four years and became a treasurer at a point. In 2009, I became the chairman of the Ikeja branch anch of the NSE. Between 1995 and 2005,, I held positions in the Association ion of Professional Women Engineers gineers of Nigeria. I was the secretary etary general, then became publicity ublicity

I GREW UP IN A POLYGAMOUS FAMILY. GROWING UP IN A POLYGAMOUS FAMILY TEACHES YOU A LOT OF THINGS, SUCH AS THE DYNAMICS AND POLITICS OF LIFE. secretary, and later, technical secretary. I finished my reign as chairman of the Ikeja branch in 2011 and moved to the national level. In 2011, I contested for elections in Calabar and became a member of the National Executive Committee. I did that again in 2012 and 2013 before I became vice president. My tenure as vice president started on January 1, 2014, and I was given the portfolio of Corporate Resources and Media. Another election was conducted in 2014 and I was successful. Childhood days It was very interesting. I grew up in a up in a polygamous family. Growing Gr teaches you a lot polygamous family te of things, such as the dynamics and helps you develop politics of life. It help absorber to a lot of a kind of shock abso things. I had a very wonderful father won who was also my friend and confidant. He H helped me to grow in a good way without necessarily limiting me. Whatever I am today tod I owe to my father. He was used to telling me that “the sky is your you launching part.’’ Anytime Anytim I closed from school schoo and went home looking worried, he loo would console w and advise me. I had my Form One in a mixed school; hence when I moved to a single school, I had a major challenge mixing ch with the girls. But w it quickly became qu more interesting though thou I was much better bett at rubbing shoulders with the sho boys. boy So when I ended end up studying Engineering, some Eng people peo were not surprised. sur Fond Fon memories I remember my rem secondary school seco days, especially Form Two, which led me to w acting. I was in class one day when they brought a list and said we should write our names if we wanted to join the Dram Drama Society. So I wrote my name. A day later, n they were preparing for a drama from a literature fr

book titled The Iroko Man and the Wood Carver. We all went for the drama in the hall, and I had fun. This made me pick the book to read. By the time we had the next rehearsal; one of the main actors was indisposed. And since we were in a girls’ school, we acted both male and female parts. The teacher who was coordinating the play asked who could take the place of the person who was indisposed, and since I had developed interest, I volunteered. That was how I ended up playing the role for competitions. It was a fond memory for me; and I ended up being the social prefect of the school. Aspirations as a child I wanted to be a nurse; I loved their uniform as a little girl. Later, my dad asked why I wanted to be a nurse and said I should be a doctor instead. That aspiration stuck till I got to Form Four and wanted to be a lawyer or ambassador. I didn’t think of being an engineer till I finished secondary school. At some point, I wanted to study Theatre Arts and my dad strongly opposed it because in those days, studying the course was like a waste of resources. Engineering and gender Well, because I am already in the field, I don’t think it is difficult. Engineering is a thing of the mind and the brain. We have found out that men aren’t more brilliant than women. A woman can study whatever a man can study and women even excel more in the classroom because we are more focused. I have found it very interesting. My father wanted me to be a medical doctor, but I didn’t like Biology, even when I was one of the best students. In those days, if you were that good you would go for Medicine or Engineering, so it was like destiny. I went into Engineering because my father couldn’t think of any other thing I could do. My teacher then said I was one of her best science students and made me go for Engineering, and I have found it fulfilling. Challenges The challenges are normal and what one would expect from a woman. There are times you have to take time off to do some feminine things like when you are nursing a baby. You can be up and doing like your male counterparts. But I would say the NSE actually encourages the girl-child to study Engineering. We go for career talks and they make the women feel they are better. They give us all the opportunity to be whatever we want to be. In places where I worked before and have had clients, I have had advantages because I am a woman. When I walk into a place and need to see the chief executive officer of the company and write my name with my title, this makes him or her curious to meet me. So before he allows the men to enter, he attends to me first. That is an advantage for me. How I met my husband We met during my six-month industrial attachment in 1985 at the Warri Refinery. He had been in the United States and had just returned

CO V E R I N T E R V I E W // MARGRET OGUNTALA to Nigeria. We met and found out that he was my boss’s friend. Few months later, we started dating, and now we are married. Best gift from him A nice nightgown; and it was the day before I had my second baby, which was incidentally my birthday. I ended up wearing the cloth in the hospital because we had to go to the hospital so I could have my baby that night. Combining the home and career It is a matter of prioritising. When my children were much younger I couldn’t put in so much. I spent more time at home. I liked to be at home when my kids were going to school. That was one of the reasons I never did the 8am to 4pm job. Even when I was working in the early years of my career as a sales representative, I had flexible time. When my children grew older, it became easy for me to do other things. I have three children - two were in the boarding house, one was still very small, so I had people who took care of her while I did my business. Now, my baby is 15 years old. Most importantly is the fact that I have a very understanding husband. He is also a chemical engineer and retired four years ago as a general manager from the NNPC. So because he is a chemical engineer he understands the mentality of an engineer and knows that I am restless and appreciates me and allows me to be myself by doing whatever makes me happy. He also knows I won’t do anything to compromise his name. He allows me to do what will better my career and develop me. And because he is a member of the NSE, it makes it easier because we go for

conferences together. Motherhood The day I had my first baby, I wept for joy. It is not a feeling that can be described. Growing up, you felt you would have a baby, and after marriage, there is a lot of anxiety and expectations for the baby. And thank God for the technology that makes you know the sex of your baby and other things. I always knew I was going to have a boy, and until he arrived, I didn’t know the amount of love that could come out of me for somebody. So when I had him and saw my baby, I wept. It was a very emotional day for me; and since that day, I my life changed. One of the happiest moments of my life was when my baby was three months. I had a housemaid, and when I went to work and came back, immediately my son saw me he gave me a very big smile. I could feel my head swelling; and since then, I have not had that feeling again. My other children gave me smile, but not as much as my first. When I see how grown they have become I wonder if these were my babies. God has been good to me because I have not had any serious challenge that made me worry. And they have been understanding. I have a passion for acting, which I am doing now. So it has been between my career, the NSE, my home and acting. My children have always given me the support in anything I am doing. My last baby is my audience and director; I would read a script for her and do it all with her. Life lessons There are several lessons of life. But the first for me is that you can only be as happy and good as you want to be. Don’t allow anybody to determine

how happy you should be. Don’t allow anyone to limit you. Wherever you find yourself, you must excel. As my father would say, when you get anywhere, place yourself to attain the highest position. When you have that in mind you will always want to excel and develop yourself by making sure that when they are looking for the best person you are in line. Role models My role model is a woman after my heart, who I call my friend, my confidant, my mum, Engr. Mrs. Idiat Amosun. Engr. Mrs. Maduka is also my role model. She is also married to an engineer. There are quite a number of people I look up to for different things; but basically, these are the two people I look up too. For the men, there is one I refer to as my favourite chairperson. He is my role model. My style My dressing depends on my mood. Most times I don’t like wearing flashy outfits. I like them simple but classy. I love jewellery but not something loud. Three must-have fashion accessories Earrings, wristwatch and my ring Favourite holiday spot I love a lot of places, but my favourite is Dubai because it is a beautiful place. I used to think that I loved Miami because of the beach, but the day I went to Dubai, I fell in love with the place. Mode of relaxation I read novels. I have always done that since I was a young girl. My favourite authors are George Bitcham and Jackie Colleen. Favourite designer I love Gucci and Channel bags but not their cloths. I like Kasper because it is tailored more into the typical African woman. Favourite dish Pounded yam and vegetable soup. Philosophy of life Take life as it comes. Live everyday as if it would be your last, and never allow anything to bother you. I smile a lot and I don’t allow anything to bother me. Don’t allow any baggage that will not make you enjoy your life. Legacies I want to be known for excellence and the fact that when you give me a job you can go to bed because I will deliver. I want to be known for kindness, especially to the younger ones because in the end, the future belongs to them.

To get the excellent look when wearing high waist skirt, it is best they are paired with fitted shirts or tops that will easily enhance the flair of the skirt. Do you have other symptoms like urgency sense of incomplete emptying? What of at night has the frequency increased too. You may need to do fasting blood sugar in order to rule out diabetes, urine microscopy, culture and sensitivity because of urinary tract infection. Above all a good examination by an urologist and prostaic surface antigen – PSA assay is needed in order to come to a reasonable conclusion All men who are above forty years should have regular PSA assay and postrate assessment. This will help to reduce the menace of prostatic cancer in men at their late ages.

ashion, or the rules of fashion, for many men, is not of utmost importance as it is for the ladies. What matters to most of them is that they look good and presentable when necessary. But amidst this, did you know that not all shoes can be worn to the office? Some shoes are made specifically for social events, jogging, traditional attires, etc. The idea of wearing snickers, coloured or big shoes that look like camp shoes to the office is a big no-no. Office shoes are generally black and brown. Both colours are tagged neutral and official. I know that some jobs require you wear snickers even to the office; that is forgivable. But for those whose workk basically lies in the office, for you to have and keep that hat professional and presentable look, it is advisable you step in with style in your office shoes.

GRILLED LAMB RIBS

A wise man once said ‘’Everything In life is temporary, so when things are going good enjoy it and if things are going bad, don’t worry it can’t last forever either so brace the storm with a side of lamb ribs. The ribs from the lamb breast are surprisingly meaty. This slow-grilled delicacy is always ready to be devoured BY ANYONE.

INGREDIENT USED IN LAMB RIBS OIL: Over the years, oil has gotten some bad publicity as people are becoming more health conscious. When it comes to weight loss and living a healthier lifestyle, the most popular is Olive Oil because it has been linked to lower risk of heart disease and breast cancer - possibly because of its high monounsaturated fat content, which lowers cholesterol. In Nigeria, the most popular is Sunflower. The cost of sunflower oil is very affordable for every class and sunflower is a good source of a protective antioxidant vitamin E - it contains your entire daily requirement and the polyunsaturates it contains help lower cholesterol. Tips for the ladies: Re-using the oil more

than a few times for deep-frying could cause the formation of harmful Trans fats. GREEN PEPPER: They are colourful! They make your plate so pretty. The red one! The yellow one. The green one! They are commonly used in stir fries. The aroma that is released while grilling makes your stomach growl in anticipation. GINGER: According to the flavour pairing manual, Ginger pairs very well with apples, bananas, cardamom, carrots, chocolate, coconut, cinnamon.. the list is endless. This may not be everyone’s cup of tea though so please try at your own risk. Your hands are most important when devouring this dish. You enjoy the challenge as well as the flavours. This is one dish rich in protein and vitamins A, B3, B6 and B12. Order a salad as a side or enjoy it with a side of coleslaw. If that doesn’t spell healthy, we really don’t know what will.

Dangers of sleeping with make-up by ESEOHE EBHOTA & PRISCA EMADU

A

s ladies, we know we should take off our makeup before going to bed, but sometimes we are just very tired. And after changing for the night, we leave our makeup on, forgetting that there are adverse effects of sleeping with them. According to Dr. Dennis Gross, Dermatologist in an interview with Debbie Vasen, “One of the biggest mistakes women make is sleeping with their makeup on.” He went on to explain some of the effects this could cause to the skin, he said, “Doing so can block pores, leaving oil trapped inside. This leads to bacteria build up and break outs. When the makeup becomes impacted in pores, it can make them appear larger which a part of aging is. Once your collagen levels decline, the pore does not snap back as easily once it has been enlarged. It is best to break this habit sooner rather than later. Additionally, leaving makeup on the face could lead to inflammation which can generate free radicals and collagen breakdown.”

There are 5 major dangers of leaving our makeup on. - Makeup holds onto dirt, oil and dead skin cells, which can clog your pores, thereby causing black heads, acne and pimples. - Besides swallowing your lipstick, the products in them can lead to clogged pores and cause blackheads around your cheeks and chin. - Not washing your mascara and eyeliner off can cause irritations in the eyes. The mascara can also flak or dry, and when you try removing them, you end up damaging your eyelashes because they will also pull off. - Leftover eye-shadows can block the oil glands and hair follicles on your eyelids, which can lead to infections. - While asleep, your skin renews itself, so not taking off your makeup can prevent this renewal process, thereby causing damage to the skin’s surface.

T

he Wikki Warm Spring is located inside the Yankari National Park in Bauchi State. Yankari is Nigeria’s most revered national park for spotting wide life. The spring welcomes you with the signpost, “It is an offence to bath with soap, wash cloths in spring, swim with trousers or other cloths, except with swimming suits; jump into the spring from any height, as well as use an unlicensed camera.” The name of the tourist site, Wikki, originated from the local Duguri language, meaning, “Where are you?” It is the biggest spring in the park, and is about 13.0 meters wide and 1.9 meters deep. It is one of the four springs in the Yankari Park and is located 42 kilometers from the main entrance. The spring’s daily flow contains 21,000,000 liters of clear, spring water that goes into the Gaji River. It has a constant temperature of 31.1 degrees Celsius, and is like that throughout the year, both day and night. The Wikki spring can be described as the mother nature’s way of creating a spa. The water is crystal clear,

which makes it a suitable and perfect spot for swimming. Above the spring is a camp with 110 furnished chalets with varying sizes and quality for visitors to rent. This provides them with a chance to enjoy the warm water, the tranquility of the environment and the comfort of nature. The accommodation also has an uncontested view of the view and park. The place has been developed for recreation and is opened for swimming 24 hours a day. When next you feel like getting close to nature, a trip to Wikki Warm Spring wouldn’t be a bad idea.
