equins material can be traced back to the days of old. The king of pop Micheal Jackson, though a man always rocked the outfit. Today sequins material is one material that when worn gives that glittering-fab look that would draw the attention of others to you. This glittering material can be worn for different occasion ranging from dinner parties to weddings. It is important to note that sequins don’t work out well for an official look. It can be sewn as a traditional or formal attire

and be gotten in different colours. There is no laid down rule on the best form to wear the outfit but you are sure to get a more desired result if you wear the outfit in a place fully illuminated, such environment enhance the beauty of the material making you dazzle in style. This material when sewn can be complemented with nice heeled shoes and a clutch. Keep being stylish and glitter away in class and style.

MORIN OBAWEYA //

Who is Morin Obaweya I am the creative director of Morin-O, an indigenous leather manufacturing brand, we have a wide range of product. We design and manufacture all in leather and skin. The brand is motivated by our effort at building a global brand out of Nigeria that is acceptable all over the world Educational Background From a very early age, I have always been both a science and an art student, even when I majored in sciences in secondary school, I was very active in the arts. I was in the drama and press club and the literary society. Though a science student, I was the best in literature. I acted both for my school and state and was part of the always travelling drama group. I acted in the ‘trials of Brother Jero’, Jero’s metamorphosis, and professor Ola Rotimi’s ‘the gods are not to be blamed’ I went on to the university to study Pharmacy and upon graduation worked as a pharmacist for two years before I decided to pursue my passion for the arts sector. I did not abandon pharmacy completely because as we speak, I run a healthcare consultancy I come from a family with a strong passion for the art, my mom was the first female photographer from the north, my Dad was in the broadcasting profession and also have a sister who studied theater arts and a brother who studied

CO V E R I N T E R V I E W

architecture so I guess it kind of runs in the genes Growing up I grew up in a close knitted family; my parents were very accommodating in allowing us to be ourselves and pursuing things that we were passionate about. For example, I got all the support I needed even after studying pharmacy and I decided to do something in the arts. My family is a diverse one, my mother is half Fulani and half Ishekiri married to my father who is from Niger state ad we grew up in the north. We are full Nigerians because we are related with both the south and the north. That diverse background has gone on to affect my perception of the world which perhaps is why I like to travel and meet new people because I believe we are the same even though we may come from different parts of the country. The kind of science you would employ in downtown Johannesburg for example is the same kind of science you would employ in downtown Balogun or downtown Baltimore, so it has given me a very national perspective and beyond that a global perspective.

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN VERY VOCAL ABOUT WOMEN AND THEIR PLACE IN THE SOCIETY. I BELIEVE THAT CULTURE HAS A MISCONCEPTION AND HISTORY HAS NOT BEEN KIND TO WOMANHOOD

Challenges growing up Yeah, with parents coming from different parts of the country, there wasn’t an overall acceptance

of their coming together and that kind of put us in the middle and that was really challenging. At certain stages of our lives, we had to move from one place to another which brought along some level of instability. Life Lessons I have to give a lot of credence to God because I believe my faith has helped me to stabilize in so many areas, and that is the strongest factor for me but at the same time, as a woman or an individual, you have to know who you are because God has placed a lot of strength, grace and capacity beyond human perception in you. It is one’s responsibility to develop one’s self and drive on it to fulfill your potentials and this is only possible through information, education, and discipline in every area. I have always been very vocal about women and their place in the society. I believe that culture had a misconception and history has not been kind to womanhood. I say this because a woman is different not inferior, I believe a woman complement’s a man in the furtherance of society. I do not agree with downplaying a woman intellectual capacity. A woman should be able to express herself in every area she finds herself inclined and gifted without any restrictions. At the same time a woman must remember her role in the family which she must give priority because I personally do not think a woman is fulfilling her God given role if she pursues a career at the expense of the home Aspirations growing up I drew my aspiration from my mother. Photography is largely visual and artistic. I wanted to be dedicated like her.

CO V E R I N T E R V I E W // MORIN OBAWEYA Multitasking home front and career The most important thing is that I enjoy everything I do to me, it is not a job, it is a life style. I multi task a lot and am forward thinking, I do not wait for something to happen, I think of the scenario and how to react to it when it happens and I surround myself with people who share the same passion. My husband and family have being very supportive and they have helped make the work very easy but notwithstanding, it can be very tiring.

I BELIEVE IN SIMPLISTIC ELEGANCE, I MAY NOT BE VERY FLAMBOYANT BUT I HAVE A CRITICAL EYE FOR STYLE

Cherished childhood moments I miss childhood memories in some areas. I am the first born of my family so a lot of experiments were done on me. Some of the things I went through, my siblings were not meant to go through same, I was made to take decision on some things at a very tender age which contributed to my level of independence but that is not necessarily a negative so looking at it today, I don’t have any regret. Meeting my husband I was doing my internship at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Teaching Hospital, Kaduna, and he was serving at an Insurance Company in Kaduna and were in the same fellowship; the Full Gospel Businessmen, Kaduna chapter. I use to see him from afar and my impression of him for whatever reason was that o, this guy is an Igbo lawyer, and then we went for a seminar where we sat next to each other, so during the introduction I got to know he wasn’t even an Igbo guy, he is actually Yoruba and we exchanged numbers and that was all. I finished my internship went to serve (NYSC) in Cross River state and returned to Lagos where my parents were living. One day I came out around falomo (ikoyi-lagos) round about and he was driving down that way and he screamed my name from the car. We became friends, one thing led to the other and that is how we got married Most cherished gift from him His support and understanding. A lot of material gift but I think the intangible things matters more to me. The reasons why I am focused on my work is because I don’t need to pay the bills. I couldn’t have been where I am today without that support, I travel a lot and he accommodates that all the time. I try to make him into the kind of travel person I am, he tries to come with me to some occasion and that’s it Accessories always found on Morin Obayewa One would find esthetics and enhancing accessories. I am very understated, I believe beauty most importantly begins from within. I am not very flashy; I try to keep it as minimal as possible. My accessories have to be confortable, well-toned skin, package gear, nice complementary jewelry. Life philosophy We have all come to the world for a purpose, it is important to remember our creator who has a plan for everyone. What you put into the world is your responsibility; it is not a favour to God or anybody. We must live life with the fear of God in mind, the

appreciation of humanity and to help others Favorite travel destination I love America because the opportunities are far and wide, what you can achieve is much if you are had working and discipline but I like the architecture, the history and the culture of Europe more. A year and half ago I was in Italy and before then in Germany, the culture and architecture is unmatched. Everything in America is modern, but Europe has history so I would like to say Europe is my favorite destination

Best form of relaxation Do I even relax! I love travelling g and window shopping. I would ould shop more if I have more money oney and these are two therapeutic tic things for me. Outside those two things, am a home buddy, I can stay at home and lock up myselff and feel good about it. Best food I would like to say best foods. I don’t have one favourite urite food per say, when am in the north, I like my ‘towonshikafa da miyan wake’ e’ (grand rice with beans soup). up). My sister spoils mee with that whenever I travel avel to Abuja. I Like continental ntal a lot incidentally. My last trip to America, a, I was leaving one state ate for another and for or some reason I was craving raving ‘Egusi soup and nd pounded yam’’ and my host prepared ared it for me and itt was great. But I’m not a pickyy eater My style I believe in simplistic elegance, I may not be very flamboyant but I have a critical eye for style, I have a personal individual style and that is why sometimes I tend to design my own cloths. Its structured n simplicity and done in an n elegant manner. er. Favorite designers igners I have one or two people who I tend to like the

way they pattern their design on the international scale. I like ‘newnew’. On the local scene there are a couple of them that I tend to like certain aspect of their design that I can work with a tailor to my fit Career and children Not really, I have a very good support system; I continued to work even when pregnant. When I gave birth, I was happy to leave my kids with my mother. On one occasion when I had my girl and I was doing baby-friendly breast feed and suddenly I had a craving to travel and I tried to express as much breast milk and I took off, I came back after a week and wanted to continue the breast feeding and my baby looked at me like, ‘seriously’ wicked off the beast and that was her last. My husband and siblings provided me with a level of flexibility I brought my kids up to be independent, pursue their individuality and not to be too clingy-clingy and over dependent. But they also know I am very sensitive. Every trip for me was cut short at the expense of family

DEALING WITH BIG ‘TUMMY’ My tubes were tied and it’s making me have a big tummy. What do I do? -Anonymous Bilateral tubal blockage or tying of tubes does not lead to big tummy or obesity as some thinks. There is a concept called “middle age spread”. Between the age of thirty five and forty five years, women do add weight. This is noticed more in women who have completed their family size irrespective of whether tubes were tied or not. There is no scientific evidence of BTL as a cause of big tummy or obesity. Bilateral tubal ligation BTL

still remains one of the most effective family planning method with minimal or no side effect/complications. BTL for those who have completed their family size is recommended. As per your tummy, start doing exercise especially abdominal muscle exercises. You may need to consult a physiotherapist, in some difficult cases and if the person can afford it operation is a way out.

PREMATURE OVARIAN FAILURE I once read in the newspaper that a woman suffering from POF cannot give birth because the ovary is immature. My question is do women who have given birth just once experience it? Fatimah, Maiduguri.

P I AM TOO FAT remature ovarian failure ( POF ), occurs when the ovary fails to produce mature eggs or follicles. A patient with POF will not see her menses and it will be practically impossible to have natural conception.

But it is not true that they cannot give birth especially with the advent of assisted conception therapy. Women that have never given birth do experience it and those who have given birth can develop POF too.

I am too fat. Which drug can I take to reduce my weight. Mercy Drug is not the primary method of treatment. I have seen people depending on slimming drugs, slimming tea and others. The outcome of such medications are not encouraging. The best plan is a combination of dietary modification, exercise and lifestyle changes. In terms of diet, you should avoid junk food, avoid over eating and late night food. Fatty food should be minimized. You can consult a dietician for further advice on this. Exercise play a key role in reducing obesity. These days because of sedentary lifestyle obesity has increased not only in western world but even in Africa. I will

10

TA M B A R I SEPTEMBER 20, 2015

encourage you to walk when going to short distance events or places instead of using any form of transportation. You may need to register in a gym for regular exercise. For proper monitoring I will suggest you calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI). This is calculated by dividing weight in kilogram by your height in meters squared. This will give you idea of the progress. You are making when exercise has begun. Once again we should ensure a healthy lifestyle and good food habits to avoid obesity and its complications.

Failure of the ovaries before forty years is called premature ovarian failure. The way out in other for conception is to use donor egg during invitro fertilization - IVF with donor egg.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF SALLAH DURBAR //

C U LT U R E

The cultural signicance of Sallah Durbar

by PRISCA EMADU & ZULEI MOHAMMED

T

he durbar celebration can be traced back to centuries ago in the north were horses where used in warfare. That time it was expected that each district, town and noble household contribute to the defense of the emirate. The emirate military chiefs of that time invite various regiments for a Durbar for the Emirs and Chiefs. The significance of the parade is to proffer horsemanship, preparedness for war and loyalty to the emirate. The Durbar Festival is one such celebratory festival. Originally arising from the use of horses during combat hundreds of years ago, the festival was intended to be a military parade of soldiers riding in defense of their Emir. The emir, who served as the military general and prince, had an entourage comprising of regiments from the different emirates of the north. Though this historic festival dates to hudreds of years before the arrival of religion, Today the Durbar celebration is different as it is now done in honour of visiting heads of state and also in commensuration of two great Muslim festivals, Id-el Fitri commemorating the end of Ramadan fast and Id-el Kabir. The Id-el Kabir is celebrated by Muslims to mark the willingness of Ibrahim to follow Allah’s command to sacrifice his son Ishmael, but eventually sacrificed a ram instead of his son. To mark this spectacular and auspicious day, a special prayer is observed. In states where the

durbar is celebrated, they have a horse procession in front of the Emir’s palace where every group, district and noble house are positioned to witness the celebration. The Emir is always the last to arrive, he always stays in front to receive the homage of his subjects. The festival fully kicks off with a group racing on their horses with their glittering swords raised high. They race gallantly and stop in front of their Emir to salute him with their sword. The Emirs household and guards known as the dogari are the last to race. After the celebration the Emir and his Chiefs retire to the palace, the merriment continues with drumming, singing and dancing. This colourful festival is one many don’t like to miss especially in Kano. With additional info from the Internet.

In this act, detailed designs of henna are being displayed both on the hands and

feet as part of beauty which makes one look stunning and gorgeous. Also, henna on the nails has a way of adding beauty to any fashionista as it is quite different from a nail hardener.
