C.o.n.t.e.n.t.s Hello Readers,
I
t is good to look ahead and try something new. Don’t wait to buy the unsold products on the shelves of beauty shops. Your best looks and buys for 2015 should reflect your style. No doubt, the best make-up looks that shaped 2014 were in form of colours - the bold lips - from red to orange, pink, dark purple and burgundies. There were so many lovely shades in between to show off the pout. And for the eyes and skin, beauty was taken out of the closet for more daring looks. Tinted lip balms seem to have stolen the show. The equivalent of sheer lip gloss trended for a long time, but it will now take a back seat for something new. After months of wearing the looks, ladies are ready to welcome back the full coloured ones. Beauty looks that will shape 2015 have already manifested, with the winning looks coming from some prominent make-up artists all over the fashion world, and back home artistes like Banke Meshida, Fatima Mamza, House of Tara, as well as Shomya giving life to great ideas and which are providing ladies something to smile about. It is safe to say that fashion and beauty have measured up to all expectations and set the bar high for new findings. Our personality is a lady of many parts and a trail blazer in her chosen field. She is a warm personality. Nike Ogunlesi is the CEO of Ruff N’ Tumble. We wish our esteemed readers joyous holidays. Keep the spirit of true love and giving in charity to those who do not have the privileges you have. Seasons greeting!

‘Challenges are opportunities to build our competence’ INTERVIEW BY Aisha Umar-Halilu
N
ike is one of the pioneers of the proudly Nigerian slogan, which has set the path for making and selling made in Nigeria cloths. Mrs. Nike Ogunlesi is a lady with many parts. She’s an entrepreneur, art lover, creative and a fashion enthusiast. Her family prepared her for the roles she’s playing presently in life. After her primary and secondary education, Nike followed her heart to pursue her passion in making cloths for children. She left the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where she gained admission to read Law after two weeks. She worked at her mother’s fabric store where she made western- inspired cloths with the adire fabric for women. Definitely, this sparked her creative instinct into what later turned into a multi-million naira brand called Ruff N’ Tumble. Ruff N’ Tumble, which started as a one-store shop in Lagos, now has branches in Kano, Port Harcourt and Ibadan.

oil and gas companies; some are pilots while others are in different fields of endeavour. Challenges are opportunities to build our competence.
I am a mother, entrepreneur, wife, sister, woman, creative, principled and straightforward. I guess that’s me in a nutshell.
Early days I actually didn’t grow up in Lagos. I grew up in Ijebu Ode, which is about 110km away from Lagos. It was very rural; however, I lived in the GRA because my father was a medical doctor. But it was a very simple and easy life. We had siesta every afternoon and sports every evening. Life was easy; it was fun. As a child, nothing was impossible and there were no responsibilities until you began to grow up. I enjoyed my early days in ijebu-Ode.
Running the home and business I must say that finding that balance is not easy. I believe it has to be life integration. This is because since I have to work, I have to find a way to integrate my work, life and home in such a way that they won’t conflict. They will probably conflict at some point; that’s where we need a good support system. Women need that support system, so if you can’t have it in terms of extended family, then pay for it. Get a good nanny and run that home as if it were a business. There should be a timetable for running the home. Engage your children in extra curricula activities such as swimming, debate, even as you stimulate them in a learning environment. It is very
My dream I wanted to own a home for the homeless children. I wanted to spend the rest of my life looking after children. Somehow I have ended up spending my life looking after children. Dressing children, being responsible for the way they look, sending a good social message through the Ruff N’ Tumble brand; a message that says children should be like children so that they believe that nothing is impossible. They can have big dreams and develop their own individual taste. They can have fun while they are doing all of that. That’s the essence and vision of the Ruff N’ Tumble brand. So in a way I ended up doing what I really wanted to do all my life.
Educational background
“We are strong and intelligent. African women are beautiful; they are hardworking and focused. Some women will make a choice to stay at home and take care of their home, and we need to respect those choices.”
Normally, I started from primary school, secondary school, then two weeks in Ahmadu Bello University trying to read Law. But I left; I did not complete the programme; hence I am not a lawyer, people get it twisted. I went back home and my mother asked me what I wanted. I said I didn’t know, so she offered me an opportunity to work with her. I could not stay at home because I was 17 or 18. I had to earn something if I would stay at home. So she asked me to join her in her adire business. She designed cloths for adult, using African print. I interpreted that name as contemporary European style. I believe it gave me a good opportunity. My mother (may her soul rest in peace) told me not to beat myself up if I could not go to the university, and offered me an opportunity to work with her, which was rare. Before then I never knew there was a creative spirit in me; I never connected to it. I used to make dresses for my Barbie dolls, but I never made a career out of it. I owe that to my mother.
On Ruff N’ Tumble To the glory of God, I think we have been able to build a brand that is recognised for quality. Funny enough, I remember showing a lady a pair of shorts I made and she liked it. But when I told her it was made in Nigeria, she dropped it and left. But we have gone beyond all of that. That’s why I said we have to get the competence. I don’t want to have excuses on made in Nigeria products. I want to match anything in other parts of the world. So it’s all about skills and competence to present a product that can stand alongside other international products. Our mission is to make cloths that are consistent with international standard. Don’t expect anybody to give you anything; if you want it, earn it.
Challenges in business At different aspects of your life you are faced with different challenges. It is your responses to those challenges that determine the outcome you will have. So it means you have to be careful about the choices you make. I don’t want women to feel like the weaker sex. We are strong and intelligent. African women are beautiful; they are hardworking and focused. Some women will make a choice to stay at home and take care of their home, and we need to respect those choices. More and more Nigerian women are becoming independent; not only in finance but in thoughts and behaviour. They take charge and responsibility for our own lives. New generation of women are really coming up. There are more women managing directors and on boards. There are women who own
important to be close to them and connect with them one-on-one. You need to integrate home and business in such a way that you will find a balance. When you do this you can reach for the stars and raise children that are confident, upright, strong and honest, with good values.
My pillar of support I hardly tell my story without saying how supportive my husband has been. He has always been there for me and the children. Your husband has to be your partner. The world is both wicked and beautiful, depending on how you see it. But if you have the best partnership you can enjoy the best that there is.
Unwinding Do I relax? I force myself to relax. I exercise. I like going to the spa. And I love dancing; you caught me dancing. Dance is one of my favourite activities. I also like reading and watching movies. It’s a suspension of my reality. I like reading developmental books, books of interest and countries. I read biographies of people like Richard Brandson, Steve Jobs, and business books. I also read books on leadership communication, all in a bid to better

define and know myself even more. I think we are an unfolding story as we mature. I find a lot of good advice and examples in books.
People who inspire me I find Steve Jobs, for example, to be very inspirational. I find Richard Branson particularly interesting because he started from nothing and built an airline. I have lots of respect for Hilary Clinton - her personal achievements and how she was able to stay with her husband. She more or less died in her inner self, just to support and be with her husband in his difficult moment. I find her very inspirational. I also find a woman and her husband who started Thomas Cook very inspirational. They started their business with two tables and one telephone line. I find women in the market selling tomatoes and sending their children to the university very inspirational. I appreciate their courage. I have a lot of respect and admiration for those women. They are incredible.
Happiest moment I can’t define one happy moment. There are many happy moments in my life. My children and my husband give me a lot of joy. It gives me a lot of joy to see women succeed.
I don’t want to have excuses on made in Nigeria products. I want to match anything in other parts of the world. So it’s all about skills and competence to present a product that can stand alongside other international products.
Favourite meal I don’t have a favourite meal. I like good/quality food.
Holiday destinations I never really take holidays; I only take working trips. I am always visiting some places or meeting clients. However, my favourite place is Italy. In summer the food and beaches are fantastic. That’s one of the places I love best.
Passions I am passionate about women and my work. I like to show women that nobody can crush their dreams. I enjoy marriage counselling, talking to people about having a personal vision for their marriages and focusing on that vision. I am passionate about my work; I like to do my work well.
Personal style I like cloths that are comfortable and colours that make me smart. I like our own print a lot; I wear a lot of them.
Accessories Very simple; I like to wear things, I don’t like things to wear me. And when I am uncomfortable I start removing them. So I like them simple.
Fashion designers
Again, I don’t have any. But when I was growing up I loved Coco Channel. I loved Coco Channel because of how she was able to transform the fashion industry. I loved Coco Channel because she was a bold woman. She was a woman who dared; she turned the fashion industry around. She got rid of long skirts and produced office trousers. Because of my background I read a lot about these designers: Christian Dior, Coco Channel, Caroline Harera, Tom Ford and the rest. First clients I started out doing clothing for women; that’s where I actually started my career. I have children and it was just difficult to find something for them, and when I found one it was too expensive. I was looking for pajamas in particular for my kids but could not find any, so I made pajamas. I made a box full of pajamas. When I took my kids to school in the morning I would tell all the mothers that I had pajamas at N750. One of my inlaws said she needed seven pairs for every night. And I told myself that if she had that need, then others must. I did some market research here and there, and the rest is history.

t is the end of the year; it’s also a celebration and holiday period. Having a wholesome body makeover is necessary. Just as women are meant to go to the spa for manicure and pedicure, the men also need that beauty touch. Manicure and pedicure go beyond pampering. They actually provide relief from hangnails and rough/ hardened areas on the skin, especially the hand and feet. They also save you from constant complaints from people around you. Some men cultivate the habit of

not cutting and keeping their finger nails clean. They also do not scrub their feet to keep it from being cracked and black. Not taking care of your nails and feet will make them look rough, irritating and dry. Some men have the belief that manicure and pedicure are solely meant for women. But they are wrong, as men of today are paying better attention to their grooming habits and making manicure, pedicure, as well as other treatments part of their personal routine.

My mother inspired me into baking business – Fauziyah Othman Fauziyah Muhammad Othman, who hails from Nasarawa State, started her primary education at the Air Force Primary School, Jos but completed it at the ABC Academy International School, Abuja. She later proceeded to the New Horizons College, Minna, from where she went to the University of Maiduguri and read English Language. She spoke to Tambari about life as a baker.
BY Mulikatu Mukaila How did you start the bakery business? I have always had the dream of becoming a world-class chef someday, but after seeing my mother and sisters bake cakes every Eid celebration and family gathering, I decided to start a business out of it. I told myself that it could be the starting point to becoming a professional chef. So I will say that my mother inspired me into this business. Also, when I was growing up I used to bake. I followed recipe from books. I nurtured the dream all through my secondary school days, up till when I graduated from the university and after my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme. I enrolled to do a short course in Dubai for about four weeks and came back home to set up Tozy’s Cakes and Cravings. How much did you start with? I started with as little as N5, 000 to buy flour and other baking ingredients. I started right inside my mother’s kitchen, using her baking pans and mixers. What are the challenges you face in
this business? As an entrepreneur, the rising cost of doing business is a big challenge. Also, exchange rate is affecting the cost of supply. This is because I import some of my materials. I also pay utility bills and shop space, as well as deliveries, especially outside Abuja. Who were your first clients? My first clients were my family members. I would bake for my sisters and ask them to assess the cakes. And believe me, their criticisms made me angry, but it got me to try harder and become better. Then came my amazing friends who would order cakes and always tell me it was amazing. Their encouragement gave me much confidence in the business. Looking at the high rate of unemployment in the country, how does Tozy’s Cake impact on the society? I will someday love to come up with a training centre in order to give the unemployed youths my baking knowledge, Insha Allah. But my first target will be teenagers and children.
I believe that when they start at that tender age, full of energy and ideas, the act of cake making will be embedded easily in them. What plans do you have for 2015? My target is to open a sales outlet in town next year. I also want to have my products sold in other retail outlets, supermarkets and schools. What makes your cake different from others? A special unique blend of ingredients with passion for baking combined. One of the distinct features of our cakes is that it has low sugar content, which makes it very edible. Also, our cakes appeal to a wide variety of tastes as we also make eggless cakes for people that are allergic to eggs. Where do you see Tozy’s Cakes in some few years to come? I see Tozy’s Cakes as a top brand in
Nigeria, eaten in every home, school parties, office meetings, picnics and weddings. What’s your advice to other young entrepreneurs? Young people should always follow their dreams. They should see their inspirations as a joyous activity, not as a competition. Always believe in yourself and have it in mind that nothing is too small to start a business.

HEPATITIS AND BREASTFEEDING Thank you for the wonderful job you have been doing on health matters. I am a regular reader of your column on health. Please, can a woman diagnosed with Hepatitis B breastfeed?
Can the baby pick the virus through the breast milk? Tayo Hepatitis B, which is prevalent among pregnant mothers, is up to five per cent, and vertical transmission is a possibility. They can breastfeed, but the mother should receive both the immunoglobulin and the vaccine. Also, the baby should receive immunisation against hepatitis within 48 hours.

Check if there is any association with the cloth you wear. Avoid unnecessary wearing of tight under-wears. You may need to see a urologist.
RECURRENT STOMACH PAINS
I am 45 years old. I experience frequent stomach problems. We have gone to so many hospitals but no change at all. Whatever I eat, I excrete after an hour. Extols, Kaduna. You will need to see a gastro enterologist. Knowing the history and physical examination by a physician will help. Also, proper laboratory/radiological investigation will help to get to root cause of the problem. One of the challenges we face is that many people are not patient to do all investigations and proper follow-up before going to another hospital.
IS CODEINE IN COUGH SYRUP HARMFUL?
Doctor, please I need your advice. I am used to taking Codeine syrup. I want to know the effect. I do take up to 3 bottles per week. The active ingredients in the popular cough syrup include codeine or 3-methylmorphine, which is an opioid. It is used to suppress cough and manage pains. Excessive intake can lead to dependency, which is what you are having now. I will encourage you to stop and use it only when prescribed by your doctor.
WITH COMBINATION-3, AM I SAFE? I do family planning and I take Combination-3. Am I safe to meet with my husband, and if I do, would I get pregnant? I am worried because I don’t want to be pregnant. Aisha, Maiduguri. Yes, you are safe. It is an effective family planning method if taken properly.

estivals are an irresistible part of every culture in every state. It is the celebration of tradition and the ways of life of different communities. These festivals help to reinforce the values that keep the community together and proudly celebrate their identity. The Calabar Carnival festival in Nigeria, referred to as “Africa’s Biggest Street Party,” was created in 2004 as part of making Cross River State the hub of tourism and hospitality in Nigeria and Africa. Held from the end of November to the end of December, the Calabar Carnival is the biggest and long multi-dimensional, multi-faceted tourism leisure and entertainment programme in West Africa. “If you boil/ bake chicken or turkey without the skin, you are taking in less calories, while frying chicken or turkey increases the number of calories contained in them.”

RECIP E: Snacks to avoid
Avoid high calorie snacks like chin-chin, cake, meat pie, buns and puff-puff. If you must eat unhealthy snacks, eat little.
Healthier snacks
Healthier snacks include nuts, garden egg, apples, avocado pear, carrots and cracker.
ating healthy during a festive period may be a herculean task, but it is possible. One way of controlling your diet is eating at the normal time. You can start by eating a healthy diet that will keep you full most part of the day. Mrs. Nkiruka Vivian Oradiegwu-Okoro, a diabetic educator and facilitator explains further: “Firstly, a healthy meal starts with breakfast, then lunch and then dinner. You should have at the back of your mind that the total calorie consumed is included in all the meals you are going to eat for that day. If the total number of calories recommended for an active female between 31-50years is 2000, the female should have approximately 666kcal per meal. However, for the Christmas day celebration, I will recommend less calorie consumption as most people would be doing more of eating and resting.” Furthermore, the method of preparation of the meal matters. Mrs Oradiegwu-Okoro puts it succinctly: “The way you prepare your meals also has an impact on the number of calories you consume. For example, if you boil/ bake chicken or turkey without the skin, you are taking in less calories, while frying chicken or turkey increases the number of calories contained in them. At most, two pieces of chicken or turkey will do per meal. ” Whatever bird you choose to cook, be it chicken or turkey, is rich in protein and fatsoluble vitamins, which are essential for muscle repair and neuron function. However, turkey is the leaner meat and possibly the healthier option with significantly less fat than chicken or duck. Similarly, if you are to eat boiled rice, the advisable portion size for an adult will be 1milk cup if you do not have a scale. Carbohydrate meals should always be accompanied with leafy green vegetables. The calorie content of rice will vary, depending on how it is prepared. White rice + stew= 290kcals; jollof rice= 490kcals and fried rice= 335kcals.
Suggested meal plan Lunch: 1 milk cup of cooked fried rice + vegetables + a piece of grilled chicken/ turkey (without skin and not fried); a glass of orange juice. (Total lunch calorie=534kcals) Dinner: Caesar salad without dressing + shredded chicken breast + ½ pack of boiled noodles. Total calories consumed at dinner= 281kcals)
Simple health tips to keep * Have regular meals but in small portions * Do not eat late. All meals should be eaten at the appropriate time * Cut down on fatty foods * Eat more fruits and vegetables * Limit the intake of sugary foods * Keep safe drinking limits, and if possible, replace alcohol with freshly squeezed fruit juices.
