Is it possible for someone without falopian tube to conceive? I am a little bit confused. My sister that has finish giving birth removed her tubes, but right now she is pregnant. How is this possible? Can you please explain to me. Idowu, Abuja One acceptable fact in medicine is never to say never. There is no method of family planning or contraception that does not have a failure rate. Only the failure rate differs some high some extremely low. Concerning tubal ligation which is a permanent method of contraception can still fail and the failure rate depends on the method used Current methods method of tubal ligation could have a failure rate as low as less than 0.2%. Your sister could be one of those rare cases of failed bilateral tubal ligation. I must also mention the fact that when the operation is done by unqualified personnels a contiguous structure - round ligament could be mistaken for the tubes. So one must see the fimbrial end before the ligation.

Fasting and your skin PEARL OF WISDOM BY UCHE EZE
I have been experiencing milk coloured discharge from my penis for about 2-3 weeks now. Meeting with my wife is a problem as I’m constantly in pain whenever I’m at it. Please help me. Ahmad, Kano. You are having a form of sexually transmitted disease. For now you should abstain from sex. You need to be treated first. It may not be advisable to prescribe drugs without knowing the appropriate drugs that whatever you are suffering from is sensitive to. You need to do urethral swab for microscopy, culture and sensitivity also additional tests like midstream urine for m/c/s is important and also blood for VDRL test. You and your wife should be properly treated. Untreated STD can lead to urethral stricture with associated difficulties in voiding and excruciating pains. Also fertility problem can also result from low sperm count to azospermia that is no sperm cells at all in ejaculate due to obstruction in the spermatic cord because of untreated or poorly treated infection. With the duration of the STD and you having sex with your wife since, she might be infected too though there might not be symptoms yet in her. There is what we called sub clinical infection. She too must run laboratory t sis and the two of you treated. I will encourage you to complete
the treatment because incomplete treatment is also dangerous. I have had patients especially men, once they feel better they become too busy to complete there drugs. Let me use to advise all men to always adress issue of urethral discharge and painful urination promptly, adequately and aggressively. A lot of women with fertility problems result from these issues. Also urethral stricture complication of neglected STD could be devastating. Once you see this symptoms avoid sex with your partner and treat but your wife must also be treated with you. Kindly see your family physician or urologist as soon as possible.
PREGNANCY AND SEX
What is the role of sex in pregnancy? Is it really important. Some people say it helps in easy delivery. I have lost interest in it as it’s not comfortable. I am afraid of hurting the baby inside too. Hauwa, Lokoja Psychological it could be important. For men denying them sex throughout pregnancy may not be good enough and for family bonding it is better to allow even if not as frequent as before. For the women who desire it and the man is not cooperative during pregnancy it is also psychological traumatizing. It may appear like abandonment and post pregnancy relationship may be affected. In terms of it been beneficial to delivery it is not practically proven. With or without sex, labour that will go normally will do. In times of comfortable positions, we have discussed it before in previous episodes, you have to work it out with your husband.

‘Women should spend more time decorating their brains than their bodies’ Interview by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU
Betty Iganya Abah is the founder and executive director of CEEHOPE, a child’s rights, welfare and development NGO and also a journalist. She was born and bred in Otukpo, Benue State but spent much of her adult life in Lagos, finding a livelihood, purpose and meaning to a complex life. My educational background I have a first degree and a Master’s degree in Literature in English from the University of Calabar and the University of Lagos respectively. I have had several trainings on human rights-related and public health issues over the years. My career background As a journalist I practiced with a number of publications in p Nigeria and the
USA for half a decade, majorly Newswatch Magazine, TELL Magazine and the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, Colorado, USA (as a media fellowship reporter). I have five publications including two collections of poems (Sounds of Broken Chains, Go Tell Our King) and a biography (Mother of Multitudes). I also worked for another half a decade with the Environmental Rights Action (ERA), Nigeria’s frontline environmental justice campaign organiz organization. Much of the time at ERA, I led the wom women’s programme desks which saw me working with women work in polluted and impoverished Niger Delta impoveris communities hosting crude cru oil pipelines. I also worked at a point on same campaign at the sub-regional level iin a number of African countries. My inspiration CEE-HOPE was born out ou of the need to address issues concerning children in concern slums slum sl umss and and impoverished impoveriish hed d communities, children who are victims of conflict, and who are at the very fringe fringes of hopelessness. My father has been a major inspiration in my life. As a young man, he trained as a community health personnel even with very little education and was instrumental in a way to curbing small pox epidemics in my hometown of Orokam. What growing up was like I grew up in a polygamous home, a home I would describe as ‘bursting at the rims with children’. My father married five wives and sired more than 30 of us. So, typically, you sleep with and wake up to a sea of humanity (laughter). I became used to communal living quite early. We would have our food, especially rice, served in big trays and then gather around it and feast on it. It was survival of the fittest! It was basically fun. Challenges faced in life Oh, like every other human being, I have had my own share of challenges, but then, I always choose not to dwell on them but to look for a way out or at worst, look for opportunities out of the challenges, make lemonades out of bitter lemons. My life’s lessons To continue doing good and not expecting the praise of men. That mindset keeps me going, especially because we are in a world where our most altruistic gestures could be grossly misconstrued. My aspirations growing up First, I wanted to be a nun, then a doctor but when at age 10 in primary school, I started writing, I just wanted to be a writer. Nothing else. I am glad I stuck by that dream against all odds. Fond childhood memories I miss Of course spending time with my maternal grandmother in my village. It was pure bliss! We would eat mangoes until our

Harnessing fasting habits in your kids this Ramadan
A
lthough we are aware that fasting is not compulsory for little ones, notwithstanding, it is important to let them know the importance of the holy month and why we fast. Also, harnessing fasting habits in them will train them for the time when fasting becomes compulsory for them and allow them appreciate the importance and lessons of fasting. Below are some of the tips. Try making them fast for half the day: Like mentioned before fasting is not compulsory on them till they reach puberty and so, on days when they do not go to school like weekends, let them fast up until lunch time or for as long as they can cope. Perhaps as the month goes on, they will be able to endure it more. Reward them: If the child is able to fast the whole day or even some of it, show them that what they have done is a good thing by rewarding them with maybe sweets and treats that you know they like. It will encourage them to try harder tomorrow. Go with them to the mosque: If you live near a mosque take
the kids there during iftar so that they can see how the community as a whole takes fasting as an opportunity to come together. The child will feel among and it will encourage him/her even more. Encourage them to do more good: Your kids need to be reminded that fasting is not just about being hungry, but the good deeds involved as well. Take them and maybe a few of their friends to feed the needy during iftar or give charity. Distract them from the hunger pangs: If your child is not able to cope with fasting, it is wrong to force them to. But of course when the boredom gets to them, you can try and engage them with Islamic cartoons or a drive around town, something to keep them busy, this way the hunger pangs associated with Ramadan eases gradually away. Most importantly, teach them the essence of Ramadan. Let them know that Allah has been merciful to them. Let them realise that they are blessed to have life easy for them unlike others who don’t.

Here are some tips on how to go about it. You will have to dig a hole
first, line it with a rubber covering or liner so that water does not soak into the ground, line it with sand, large stones and grave until it has completely covered the rubber liner, then connect a water hose to pump water into the pond and fix an outlet pipe for when you want to empty it for maintenance, then you will need to plant various plants along the pond’s edges. You can add some goldfish in for effect and lighting around the pond for a great view at night and a voila brand new pond is ready. With additional information from the internet

Appetising delicacies for Ramadan Stories by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

he holy month of Ramadan is upon us once again. We are all accustomed to the usual kosai (bean cakes), kunu and other staple foods that always make their way to the table every Ramadan. However, changing it up a bit is a good idea in order to please our taste buds after a long day of fasting. Therefore, this week, we have gathered something savoury, something sweet and a beverage to include in your iftar schedule to turn it up a notch with each recipe being more delicious than the other. You can also be sure to get a balance of carbohydrates, protein and vitamins with each dish and they are also suitable for calorie watchers. (Just don’t indulge on the honey dumplings too much).

asting has a lot of beauty benefits, I doubt you knew that. Fasting has been practiced since the ancient times, irrespective of culture and religion. Apart from being a religious exercise, it also serves as a healing process. Fasting helps eliminate harmful toxins in the body, leaving you fresh and well thereafter. In this edition, we’ll go in-depth to look at the benefits of fasting on the skin. CURES DERMATITIS: Contact dermatitis is a skin condition caused by sensitivity to soaps, jewelry, plants, and cosmetics. Fasting reduces skin inflammation caused by contact from specific object or substances.Fasting helps to cleanse the body system, letting go of all the bacteria causing the dermatitis and rejuvenating the skin. PREVENTS SKIN DISEASES: Short-term fasting can also help clear up persistent skin conditions, including eczema. Fasting works by freeing the body temporarily from digestion. This shifts the body’s energy to regenerate other systems, including the skin.
DETOXIFIES: Detoxification is the process of expelling toxins from the body, and fasting does this faster. When the colon is cleansed, the body is able to absorb more nutrients from the food we eat. And when the body is at its best, it’s able to repair damaged cells and regenerate skin tissues more efficiently. When the body is free from toxins, it translates to healthier skin. PREVENTS BREAKOUTS: Consider fasting for short term once in a while, especially if you are prone to acne; it’s good for the skin. Most times, acne breakout is caused by irritants and hormonal imbalance. Fasting flushes out toxins that cause irritation. It also resets the body to offset any imbalance, leading to reduced breakouts and skin irritations. REGENERATION: Fasting speeds up the body’s ability to heal itself. When your skin begins to look dry and unhealthy, it’s advised you fast. It will help accelerate cell turnover, leading to radiant, luminous skin.
