PREGNANCY AFTER AN EVACUATION

Any effect of getting pregnant immediately after evacuation? Samira, Minna. It is advisable to wait for at least three months. This will allow menses to return and also avoid confusion in case of gestational trophoblastic disease. But if it has occurred ensure you do a scan early.

LONG AND SHORT SIGHTEDNESS

Halima In long sightedness near image appears blurred while the opposite is the case in short sightedness the long distance image appears blurred. Long sightedness is caused by the eyeball being too short, so that light rays are focused behind the retina at the back of the eye and the image is blurry. This condition occurred more with advancing age especially from forty years.

AFTER HYSTEROSCOPY WHAT NEXT

I am forty six years old with two kids. I started having excessive menses three months ago. The doctor has checked me and said I have fibroids and that I should remove my womb. Is there nothing else that can do done? The doctor that advised you must have taken a lot of things into consideration. But be as it may other options available include myomectomy that is removal of fibroids through operation which may be done laparoscopically or by abdominal myomectomy The use of monthly injections of Gonadotrophin releasing hormone analogue for three to four months might be adequate. Simple use of hormonal drugs like progestins or combined oral contraceptive pills have been of proven benefit, though at this age will not be the best. Prior to doing any of these I will suggest endometrial sampling for histology first to rule out any form of malignancy.

FOUL SMELL AFTER MENSES

I am worried my wife does not have discharge from her private part but after her menses there is usually a foul smell. Because of this we are are unable to meet for almost two weeks after her menses. LAYLAH MAI ALIYU // Hauwa or now Laylah Mai Aliyu is from Yobe state and the founder of L&N Interiors. She comes from a family of 15 siblings and she is the oldest daughter from a conservative and Islamic background. Her father is a retired civil servant and is now a farmer. Educational background I went to a number of government schools. I started my primary school education in Kaduna at Unique Nursery and Primary School and finished in 1997, same year we moved to Yobe. Then I went to Government Girls College in Yobe. I started as a boarder but then I was a bit stubborn and would sneak out of the boarding house, so I became a day student and went to Leaders Private School, also in Yobe. I then went to the University of Maiduguri in 2005 and graduated in 2010. I studied English Literature to be precise. After that, I grew a passion for interior design, so I went to Dubai from 2012 to 2014 to pursue diplomas in interior design courses. I started here in Nigeria but I wasn’t satisfied so I decided to go to Dubai, and now I have three diplomas and am currently pursuing my masters in Dubai also. Career background I actually did a lot of things before settling for this. I started a salon when I was 18 because I have always loved money so much (laughs). And I’d ask my father for everything and he eventually grew tired and said I should start looking for my own money, so he gave me about N250,000 in 2003 which I used to open the salon in Maiduguri. Right from that moment I knew that looking for my own money was what I wanted to do. So I jumped from the salon after two years and opened a male boutique in 2006 because the salon wasn’t doing well. But because of my habit of dashing things out it didn’t last for very long either. But even at that point I knew interior design was something that I wanted to do because I love to remodel my room. They used to call my room “mini palace” when I was growing up. I would paint my room myself, I change my curtains. So when all these things failed, when I came to Abuja for my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), I just thought, I really don’t want to go back home. I’d rather stay here. So I needed to do something so I started L&N Interiors. A lot of people think it stands for Laylah but it actually stands for LaylwalNahar which means day and night in Arabic; implying that we work 24/7. Growing up I had a very nice childhood, but not like I was born rich or with a silver spoon in my mouth. There were a lot of financial ups and downs growing up. I remember the time when we used to walk for about 30 minutes from our house to reach the main road to get a bus to take us to school back in 1992. I can remember eating burabisko without stew because we couldn’t afford to buy tomatoes and our parents would tell us that we’re trying a new thing; taking it with salt and oil. We’d all gather around the tray and sit down and that was the most important time of my life because it made me realise that you could go from having something to nothing and vice versa. I came out of that, which has shaped me to become who I am today. Every day when I see someone suffering on the streets hustling, it takes me back to those days, so I know how to respect people that e actually hustling

I CAN REMEMBER EATING BURABISKO WITHOUT STEW BECAUSE WE COULDN’T AFFORD TO BUY TOMATOES AND OUR PARENTS WOULD TELL US THAT WE’RE TRYING A NEW THING; TAKING IT WITH SALT AND OIL and I know that those experiences moulded me to be the woman I am. Challenges I don’t see many things as challenges but rather as lessons. Many obstacles that came my way are men. I was married twice and I’m just 31, so it’s not easy for people from the North to get married and come out and remain strong. I’m just lucky that I have a strong father and he understands that the most important thing is my happiness.

Career wise, I believe I’m doing well. But when I started interior designing it took me a long time before people agreed to give me jobs because I am a northern woman. They just saw me as a Hausa girl of privilege that could just show her face and couldn’t do anything. So I had to make things for free just to make a name for myself and for people to see what I’m capable of. It took me two years before people actually recognised me and I was also paying rent and the two staff I had at that point. I don’t

CO V E R // LAYLAH MAI ALIYU even know how I did it. It was just God. Life lessons I learnt that patience is the most important thing in life. Most rewarding part of my career The look on my clients face: The fact that you see someone praise what you create. Only God can create perfection. But when you sit down and use your mind to make something; that is the height of achievement. Aspirations growing up I always knew I wanted to be rich. People say it’s not about the money but for me it’s about the money. From the first day I earned my first N2,000, I never wanted to stop. I wanted more. To me, having money wasn’t just to buy expensive stuff. I never wanted to work for anyone. I have always been a leader. Even my brothers follow me. I’ve always been a boss lady. Fond childhood memories Just being around everybody; now it takes a whole year to see all your family members at all together at once. We would sit in the parlour and just argue till evening because we had nothing to do. I just miss the time when you would just sleep and wake up and find that your mum has cooked for you. Everything was done for you. Typical day My days are always busy. I’m a workaholic. I work at day, night, in my car: so my typical day is just work. I don’t do anything for fun. Most cherished gift and who it was from From my father; he gave me my first capital to start the salon as I mentioned earlier. Without that I wouldn’t be where I am today. Top five things on your wish list I would like to buy a Range Rover, then a huge house. Thirdly, a fine single man that would worship me, then two beautiful daughters and lastly, I really want to grow my company to the point where I can hire as many young people as possible. Favourite music on replay I love the blues, especially Ed Sheeran and Whitney Houston. First app in the morning/bedtime Instagram. I used to love Facebook but I’ve graduated to Instagram now. Favourite fashion item(s) I’m not really a fashion person but I love studs and wristwatches. Flats or heels? I’m a flats person. Canvas all the way. Most expensive fashion accessory It’s a Gucci bag. I just got it and it’s really expensive to me and it took me three years to buy it. What I wouldn’t be caught wearing A deep neck: I don’t like anything that shows my body. I can wear something that’s really tight when I’m in my house to look funky for myself, but I don’t really like going out with anything skimpy. Favourite travel destination and why I love Beirut. I’ve been there twice and it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world. How I relax The only thing I do is go to the movies like once in a month. Favourite quote I have plenty. I’m a poet. “No matter how hard the wind blows, the mountains cannot bow to it” and I am a mountain. Favourite food I am such a huge foodie. I eat everything but I love white rice with beans and pepper. Definition of style

I’M A POET. “NO MATTER HOW HARD THE WIND BLOWS, THE MOUNTAINS CANNOT BOW TO IT” AND I AM A MOUNTAIN You are your style. You shouldn’t copy anyone. It’s who you are. Favourite fashion designer I’m not into any specific label. Favourite perfume, bag and shoes For perfume, I love anything Armani. For bags I love Gucci and for shoes I buy anything that catches my eyes and are comfortable, most especially canvas. Mum’s advice that stuck with you over the years y

Don’t talk to men. Men are wicked (laughs). Favourite sport, colour and weather My favouritecolour is yellow, I’m not really a sports person and I love cool rainy weather. Favourite day of the week and why Saturday because I know there is nothing to do on Sunday. Beauty routine I don’t have a beauty routine. I don’t use make up or any product for my face. Role models I usually say Oprah Winfrey but now I have a new role model: the wife of the Vice President, DolapoOsinbajo. The way she treats her husband is unbelievable, the love they have and the way she has shielded her children from limelight. It is beautiful for someone of that status to have such control of her life. She actually has a farm behind her house. She’s so humble.

igeria is blessed with various mystical and fascinating destinations and one of these is none other than Ogbunike Caves in Anambra State. The wondrous caves are located within a tropical rainforest with an annual festival called ImeOgbe taking place to commemorate the discovery of the caves. The main cave is about 10 metres wide and 30 metres long with 10 tunnels leading to various directions. Within those tunnels there are chambers and other tunnels interconnecting like a maze occupied by colonies of bats. Apart from that there are lakes and other bodies of water dotted around the caves with one of them flowing into the River Nkissa. There is a relaxation spot for tourist to enjoy as they embark on their journey to discovering the beauty of the caves. The rainforest surrounding Ogbunike caves alone is a sight to behold with deer, antelopes, rabbits, frogs, alligators and birds to see. H E A LT H Y L I V I N G S O C I E T Y N E W S The good and bad of consuming Chika Ike gets accepted caffeinated beverages into Harvard

Compiled by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

ust like everything in life, consuming caffeine has both its good and bad sides. As much as caffeine intake is important, overdoing it may have severe long term side effects. Mrs. Tabitha Oyelade, a dietician with Centenary Hospital Lagos, states that caffeine consumption is rampant and almost inevitable, as most beverages have caffeine components; therefore, it is next to impossible to completely avoid caffeine. She however highlights on the good and bad sides. The good • Caffeine boosts your physical and mental performance. Caffeine increases adrenaline levels in your blood. It helps you focus and stay alert. Moderate caffeine intake, one to six cups a day, helps you focused and improves your mental alertness. • Caffeine may help you lose weight. It contains minerals like magnesium and potassium which help the human body use insulin, regulates blood sugar levels and reduces your craving for sugary treats and snacks. • Caffeine protects your brain. High caffeine levels in your blood reduce the risk of Alzheimer disease. It also lowers risk of dementia. • Caffeine brightens your mood, helps fight depression and lowers risk of suicide. Caffeine

stimulates the central nervous system and boosts production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, which elevate your mood. The bad • Caffeine can be toxic. Bad quality coffee can have a lot of impurities in it, which can cause sickness, headache or a general bad feeling. • Too much caffeine intake can cause insomnia and restlessness, leading to heart diseases and brain damage. • Consuming caffeine during pregnancy is really risky and can cause complications. • Caffeine in some cases can increase your blood pressure. Daily habits bad for your health

T

here are certain things we consider normal but which are really bad for our health. Most people have adopted these health hazards into their daily routine without even realising the damage. Constantly staring at a screen all day Most people constantly stare at a screen all day. First, it’s in the office, and then it’s at home looking down on the phone screen till bedtime. This is very dangerous, and the rays from these screens can cause long term health hazards. To avoid damaging your eyes, take breaks from looking at any screen of any sort. Take a few minutes to look away from your computer or phone screen. Sitting too much Frequent sitting can increase the risk of heart disease; worsen mental health and other issues, especially for those who do not get regular exercise.

he actress/businesswoman Chika Ike has finally been accepted into Harvard after spending 5 years trying to get admitted into the prestigious Ivy League University. She shared her excitement on her Instagram captioning the photo, “That unfathomable joy you feel when you get accepted into Harvard for your Executive MBA.I finally got accepted iinto Harvard B Business School ffor my masters. A After trying ffor 5 years and ggetting rejected.I sstarted business aat age 17 and I’ve bbeen doing this ssolely on selfkknowledge and iinstincts, I think it it’s time to horn m my business skills ffrom the mother oof all business sschools so I can h have a sustainable ccompany.”

lifestyle but try tr It’s a little hard to change your work lifestyle, to move around the office whenever possible, and maybe take a walk after work to have some time spent on your feet. Skipping breakfast Skipping breakfast or eating breakfast late in the day could raise the risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it gets your body started with the appropriate nutrients needed to get through the day successfully. Due to busy schedules, most people skip breakfast. As much as possible, avoid skipping breakfast. Sleeping late Chronic sleep deprivation can affect your appearance. Over time, it can lead to premature wrinkling and dark circles under the eyes. Lack of sleep can lead to an increase of the stress hormone in the body. Some of the most serious long term p potential problems associated with chronic sleep deprivation are high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure or stroke. Not taking enough water Many people don’t realise just how important water really is. The human body is made up of 66 per cent water, and when we lose just a little bit of water through sweat and elimination, and we do not replenish it, it affects our health. When a person begins to dehydrate, more things happen in the body than just being thirsty; the more liquid in the body is lost, the thicker the blood becomes and the harder the heart muscle must work to pump the blood through the circulatory system.

Nigerian rising star Ros Gold-Onwude turned up at the NBA Awards in New York with Canadian artist Drake. They pair showed up at the red carpet together at Pier 39 where the awards took place. They have been close friend for quite a while and have sent rumours flying on whether they are dating but nonetheless the facts are clear that the rapper has some sort of interest in her. Last year, Ros was also rumoured to be dating Nigerian artist Jidenna too when they attended the BET Awards together.

KIDDIES MORALS

with UCHE EZE

Teaching kids to be appreciative

U

ngratefulness and discontentment is a terrible thing; especially for a kid. Kids have to be taught how to be thankful and grateful for what they have, what they are given and what they own. It’s said that “if we are thankful for what we are given, we’ll receive more.” Therefore, children must be taught to be appreciative of what they already have, while hoping for more. Here are a few pointers on how to raise appreciative kids: Teach them to say ‘thank you’: By saying thank you, it shows that you appreciate what they have been given. Ensure that they say thank you when they are given gifts or compliments. If they don’t say thank you, take back what they have been given. Teach them contentment: Make the kids understand that they are blessed to have all

that they have. Explain to them to be happy and content with what they already have, as not many are fortunate to have the same things as they do. Lead by example: Children follow the steps of their parents. Therefore, make sure that you are showing them the right example on thankfulness. Try not to complain when you’re given something in their presence, instead say “thank you” first and complain later. Encourage them to give: Teach them that giving is good and that when you give, you receive. Take them to orphanages, hospitals and so on, make them give out toys and some of their clothes. With that they’ll be thankful for what they have been given by both their parents and God.

TRENDS STYLE FASHION

By UCHE EZE

t’s no news that milk is good for the bones, but did you know it has many beauty benefits as well? Mixing milk with other ingredients like scented bathwater and baking soda has been done for centuries as therapy to moisturise and soften the skin. Milk is rich in vitamins and minerals which helps slow the process of ageing and retains skin elasticity. The natural lactic acid found in milk is alpha-hydroxyacid. This type of acid gently dissolves proteins to exfoliate dead skin cells for fresh and younger skin. Milk baths have become popular in recent times. Most spas and beauty places now offer this beauty treatment, but you don’t have to spend a lot of money at a fancy spa to enjoy the benefits of milk. Routine

i h iis a time ight i off rest ffor the h b body, d mind and the skin. It’s important to establish a night time beauty routine to prepare the face for the night and rejuvenation. Skin-cell renewal is faster at night because collagen is boosted and thus harmful radicals are destroyed. Also, skin temperature is naturally higher at night, which means that your skin is more receptive to active ingredients. Step 1: Oil Use oil to wash off makeup before using cleanser, because it instantly melts away all the stubborn makeup. Products like waterproof mascara and eyeliner are harder to rinse off with a gentle cleanser. Also, oils are a great way to massage your face, loosen your nodes and give yourself a little face. Step 2: Cleanser Next, gently rub your cleanser in a circular motion on the face. This will remove whatever element of makeup the oil missed. Use a cotton pad to sweep the cleanser across your face. Step 3: Toner Most toners are composed of active ingredients that are great for the skin to absorb in the evening. Toners add an extra barrier of moisture to your skin and they are hydrating and calming.

Step 4: Serum There are many active ingredients in a serum; you just have to find one that fits your skin type. The ingredients in serum have antiageing properties, which even out the lines and wrinkles on the face. Step 5: Moisturiser Finding a moisturiser that will really penetrate and add moisture to the skin is crucial. The more you keep your skin hydrated and moisturised, the younger and more vibrant you look. Step 6: Face Oill eat Face oil is a great way to lock in all the moisture and it also ce prepares your face to relax and get ready for bed.
