Haowa Bello The Fulani girl with a luxury brand
Hi there!
K
not wrappers have been on the scene for a while yet they are as elegant as ever. Knotting a wrapper can give any outfit a sophisticated look. These wrappers look great on both native outfits or with a simple blouse. It all depends on how you choose to dress it up. Either way knot wrappers are here to stay. Rocking a suit doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go for a classic suit. You can easily go for an Ankara corporate look for formal occasions. Guys have really learned to slay this ensemble and it looks super dapper. So instead of a suit why not go for a corporate Ankara look instead showing how daring you can be. In the kitchen we’re cooking up something from the Middle East. The region is known for their strong blend of flavours and what we have for the Ramadan special promises just that. We have falafel as an alternative to the everyday ‘kosai’ and roasted chicken stuffed with rice and herbs. Then on the sweeter side we have decadent caramel date fingers with apricot iced tea to wash it all down perfectly. Also, check out the iftar schedule we have prepared for you. This week, we’ll be discussing the importance of developing the habit of giving in children on our kiddies’ page. We have shared a few ways to teach them how to do these rewarding acts. On the cover we have Hoawa Bello, the Fulani lady behind the Madame Coquette State, the luxury bag brands. She speaks on how she started her life outside the fashion and much more in her interview. We hope this gets you inspired. Ramadan Mubarak!

MALE FACTOR FERTILITY, WHAT DO I DO? Sir, I have a challenge, I got married since May 2015 and since then my wife has been unable to take in. We ran some tests and it was discovered that she has infection and some drugs was prescribe for both of us and treatment was carried out but condition remain the same. In December 2016, I ran test the result showed that I have no sperm cell at all. Please sir what can I do? What test do I need to do? Frank from Gwagalada Abuja First with such result the best is to still repeat the seminal fluid analysis to confirm. It is always better to do confirmatory tests especially when dealing with such a test before coming to conclusion. If it is the same that there is no sperm cells then the diagnosis is azospermia. Next step is to see a urologist for investigations in other to know whether it is obstructive or non obstructive . In the former Sperms are being produced but due to blockage in has deferens it is not being ejaculated, while the latter - non obstructive there is inherent defect and no sperm is produced at all. Approach to management are different for the two In obstructive azospermia, occasionally corrective surgery can be done. While in others assisted conception therapy with sperm aspiration and ICSI can be done to achieve pregnancy. In non obstructive azospermia, testicular aspiration of sperm could be done too. And where it fails donor sperm is an option. Let me also mention and correct the bad habit of continuous treatment of infection for months or years for couple with infertility . It is abuse of antibiotics, waste of precious time and waste of resources. Most of the time the infection that causes tubal or testicular damage would have been in the past. Always do complete investigation for infertility work up to identify the real problem instead of ‘blaming’ and treating infections.
OLIGOMENORRHEA I am 22 years old, and I haven’t seen my period for about two months. What can I take to resolve this problem? From Maryam, Sokoto When did you start seeing your menses? What is your BMI? Are you overweight or obese? Any pimples on your face? Any unusual hair growth like on the chin? The diagnosis is called oligomenorrhea. That is when a woman’ menstrual cycle length is more than 35 days, but less than 6 months. The commonest cause is polycystic ovaries popularly known as PCOs. In most cases, exercise can correct BMI. Those who do not respond to exercise are advised not to panic, as it affects up to fifteen percent of women. This does not mean pregnancy will be an issue. For those with this problem and with challenges of conception, ovulation induction has been found to be effective. See a Gynaecologist for further counseling.

TABLETS FOR HEALTHY LIVER AND KIDNEYS Sir, what tablet will I take to help me promote liver function, bladder, kidney health. I need your help, thank you. Monday B. from Abuja FCT. The best “tablets and injections” for healthy liver, bladder and kidneys are a balance regular diet, exercise and healthy lifestyle. Nowadays there is abuse of tablets especially food supplements tablets rather than basic fresh foods and fruits. Nigerians will survive on junk goods and try to complements this with expensive, scientific unproven tablets and they will call
the tablets natural? Is still beat my imagination how something formulated into tablets with preservatives can still be “natural”? My advice is if there is need to take supplements please see your physician first and let him prescribe it . We should bear in mind that even a lot of cheap drugs are fake how much more will this people’s fake expensive “ food supplements”. Remember natural foods and fresh fruits are the best drugs for a healthy human being.

HAOWA BELLO
The Fulani girl with a luxury brand Interview by ADIE VANESSA OFFIONG
H
aowa Bello is the name behind luxury bag brand, Madame Coquette State. The youngest of six children born to a diplomat, Ambassador Mahmud Bello, the Adamawa-born speaks of her childhood growing up in Cameroun and making a name for herself among other subjects. In her spare time, she enjoys yoga, cooking and gardening. She recently ventured into farming and has since set up a small cattle farm in Lagos. Fula Farms has begun supplying fresh milk and locally produced cheese (better known as wara). The farm’s goal is to set up a dairy supply hub that can cater to the needs of residents in Lagos. So far, the farm supplies 50 liters of milk weekly but has the capacity to produce more. Educational background I have a background in Economics (ABU Zaria), Fashion Marketing (Parsons New School of Design New York), Academia Riacci (Florence, Italy). Give us an insight into your career I’ve always been self employed. I started Madame Coquette nine years ago with a 30,000 naira loan from my sister, Maryam. There was no manual or guide book when I started. I jumped right into the mix and had to find my way. Perfecting our craft has always been and still is a priority at Madame Coquette (MC). I’m a hands-on business owner. I love working in the factory alongside my team. Most business, if not all, have a certain uniqueness to them. I push my team to be the best at what they do. I can’t take credit for the success of MC. It takes a team of skilled workers
(artisans and admin staff ) to create the magic. We are our best when we work as a team. As a business owner, it’s imperative to wear the hat of a consumer. You can only fully understand your customer when you wear his/her shoes. Thinking like a consumer has helped me design, produce, and sell to a wide range of consumers. I wear the two hats interchangeably. What was growing up like? My father was a diplomat so I spent the better part of my childhood in Yaounde, where he worked. I grew up in the diplomat

community there and attended the American School. Growing up, all my friends were from different parts of the world. Being different was okay. Being comfortable in your own skin is a privilege I had growing up. That environment gave me a different perspective. What were some of the challenges faced in your career or personal? When I started many years ago, a lot people were unsure of buying made in Nigeria goods, especially handbags. The market was flooded with a variety of imported products most of which were designer replicas. The concept of locally produced bags was not a concept that was widely known or accepted. I had to work twice as hard and charge half as much to get customers to give the products a chance. A few people were

GROWTH IS REALIZING WHAT YOU ARE DOING WRONG AND KNOWING THE STEPS YOU NEED TO TAKE TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT. sceptical about buying made in Nigeria handbags as they prefer to carry big names, known foreign brands or even replicas. A lot of Nigerians weren’t aware that locally produced bags could be an option for them. The ones that were aware had little faith in the products. Over the years, I’ve established a strong relationship with MC customers and have built strong brand loyalty. Consumers see the value in the products and are excited to be part of the revolution. It’s my responsibility to ensure that the brand is constantly raising its standards and giving consumers world class products. What lessons has life taught you? Life has taught me to see growth as a journey, rather than

CO V E R // HAOWA BELLO a destination as I once thought when I started business. It’s not how fast you grow but how consistent your growth is. For my business, I would definitely say growth was organic. I started small and didn’t have a lot of experience or funding. It took a lot of patience, discipline, persistence, hard work and a great deal of sacrifice. I have a strong support system (family and friends) that always remind me why I should never give up when I lose hope. I learned a lot of things on the job and made my own mistakes. Growth is realizing what you are doing wrong and knowing the steps you need to take to make things right. What were your aspirations growing up? I’ve always wanted to excel in what I enjoyed doing most. I’m a very passionate person. Anything worth doing should be done well. I’ve always had big dreams. I wanted to change the world. What fond childhood memories do you miss? Some of my best memories growing up was keeping my late mother company as she got ready to accompany my late father to one of the many events they attended while in the diplomatic core. I would gush over her clothes and jewelry and would dictate what purse I felt matched her outfit most! What is the best gift you have received from any one that you still cherish till date? My very first piggy bank! My mother gifted my sister and me a piggy bank from one of her trips. She got me a blue one and it had a fancy lock which I loved. I still cherish the gift as it has instilled the art of saving that is part of my lifestyle today. Three fashion accessories you always have on you? Sun glasses, handbag and a scarf Best travel destinations Marbella, Spain and Cape Town, South Africa How do you relax? I work out! It calms me down and keeps the stress at bay. When I don’t feel like superwoman, I spend the day at the spa! What type of style are you comfortable in (Fashion wise) On a day to day, I’m a skinny jeans and heels kinda girl. Avoiding post - iftar fatigue Stories by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU
I
t isn’t an unusual thing to break the fast; and after eating, tiredness and laziness kicks. In turn, this makes it difficult for us to carry out other activities like taraweeh prayers and other chores at night. A lot of things are neglected due to fatigue. But there are ways in which one can overcome this. Plan your meal: Make sure
you know how to balance what you are going to eat when you break your fast. Concentrating on foods that boost energy that was lost during the day is important. Focus on drinking fruit and vegetable juice: Break the fast by hydrating your body with juices that have vitamins and minerals. These are rich in electrolytes and hydrate your body thereby
stimulating blood flow. Don’t indulge in too much carbohydrates: Carbs like fried potatoes, yams, bread and kunu can cause laziness and sleepiness when eaten too much. So ensure that the portion of carbohydrates on your plate is the smallest. Eat vegetables: Vegetables aid quick and easy digestion of food. By doing so, your body doesn’t have to stress itself too hard working on digestion. An ample amount of leafy or any vegetable of choice ought to do the trick. Don’t overfeed: It isn’t a hidden fact that overstuffing yourself with food to the point you have difficulty breathing is a bad idea. Of course you’d feel tempted with all the aromatic smell of food wafting around the house while you are on an empty stomach. But if you overfeed, needless to say your body will become weak with fatigue and you will feel uncomfortable too. So when having your iftar, eat till you are at the brink of fullness but not overstuffed like a turkey. With additional information from the internet
Oral benefits of doing siwak
S
iwak also known as iwak, chewing stick, comes from the Salvadora persica tree and has been used for centuries before the invention of the toothbrush and toothpaste. While fasting, not all feel comfortable brushing their teeth with toothpaste due to the strong mint flavour and the risk of swallowing. Therefore, choosing siwak as an alternative has many benefits. Protects from plaque and gingivitis: Brushing your teeth with siwak helps fight bacteria due to its antibiotic properties, and in turn; saves your teeth from forming plaque and your gums from contracting gingivitis. Fights bad breath: Using siwak regularly can also prevent bad breath in the long term by preventing growth of bacteria. Stronger gums: Apart from cleaning your teeth, it also strengthens your gums thereby reducing the risk of gum disease. Has high nutritional value: Siwak contains
nutrients like silicon silicon, fluorine fluorine, Vitamin C, calcium oxide and trimethylamine. These are all good for strengthening teeth and improving overall oral health. Whitens teeth: Siwak also helps you achieve that glimmer white smile with extra white

teeth by reducing stains fro from tea, coffee, tobacco products and other foods. Prevents toothache: Since it has properties that fight germs and bacteria, it saves teeth from cavities and tooth decay and in turn; prevents toothache.

he rains are here, and there’s no telling when and where a downpour might meet the kids. Save yourself the panic and torture, and get them rain jackets to protect them from the rains. These rain jackets come in different colours and styles and are lightweight; so moving around in them wouldn’t be a problem at all. Not only will a raincoat offer protection from the rain, it will also make a fashion statement. To make your child more interested, get a raincoat in his/her favourite colour, or engraved with a favourite cartoon character. Also, make sure to get the ones with hood to protect their hair.

Developing the habit of giving in children G
iving is very important as it increases the blessings that come your way. It is a sign of kindness, empathy and care; a trait shared by all religions. Therefore, it is important to imbibe the act of giving in children from a young age so that they experience the feeling and learn to always share and give back. Have a heart to heart talk: Let them know the importance and blessing that comes with giving. Remind them that there are people who have much less than they do and that giving will only make them better people. Hearing this will encourage them to give out. Let them give out simple gifts: This will further develop the joy that comes with sharing and giving, even if it is to a family member or a friend. Seeing someone
close light up with happiness will be close to priceless. Don’t offer, just give: No matter how small it is whether it is a box of sweets or chocolates, sharing it with everyone around instead of offering is a great way to encourage valuing what you have. Visit an orphanage: Visit a local orphanage with your child to donate old toys, clothes and the like. Let them see how they eat and what they have compared to them. Seeing such realities will make them understand the value of giving even more. Be a role model: Most importantly, be a role model to them by giving too. Whether small or big, it is the thought that counts. As parents, your children look up to you and what you do, so do as you wish your children to also do.
