H
ow long have you been in the beads business? Since 2013, so it’s four years now. What was the motivation? I started after my NYSC when I could not get a job. I got tired of staying at home in Jos. So I woke up one morning and all I could hear in my head was go and learn something. I finished my work at home and told my dad I was going to the market (Terminus market in Jos). When I saw some beads I just knew I had to learn. I spoke with the lady making them and we negotiated on how much I will pay to learn How much capital did you start the business with? I paid N10, 000 to learn the basics I needed and some designs because I didn’t know anything about bead-making. The first set of materials I bought cost me N2, 000. I got two beautiful necklaces which I sold to get more money to buy more materials for a new beads work, that’s how the business started. Besides bead making, what else do you do? Beside making beads, I train people on how to make them - put stones on gele - and I also have a popcorn business. Management just has to do with time and setting of my priority. I make popcorn early in the morning which I distribute to some shops nearby before I go to my shop. I taught my cousin, so when she is around she helps me. What challenges do yo face in this business? It was not so easy. Going to the market every day to learn and the patronage was low because I had only three major buyers then my aunties and mum - who also supported me. I started working from home in Jos; balancing that with my house work was not easy. Finance is another challenge because with beads, you have to be active. New things come out every day and I need to buy materials continuously to get better. How many persons have you engaged so far? I have four permanent staff and six temporary workers. There are also six apprentices in the business. How do you attract customers? Through the social media (Facebook and

There were other economic activities like buying and selling Sallah gifts, food and drinks and lots of others. Organizers of the event told Youthville the event was to create a fun opportunity for all Muslims
to have fun and enjoy their sallah celebration. “It comes up once in a year, during the Eid-il-Fitr celebration for our brothers and sisters to have fun and socialize with one another. It is also a platform to show that we are a peaceful people and can also have fun in a modest way”. instagram), word of m o u t h , n display in my shop,, m putting them on myself and also the good testimonies f r o m people I worked for, endations and recommendations. Would you jump at the prospect of having a white collar job? I will not leave bead making because it’s not just a means of income but a passion. However, truthfully speaking, I will take one for now just to help me support my business. What is your advice to others who would want to trail your business line? It may not be easy at first, especially financing yourself when you have no one but with prayer and much reliance on God, hard work and honesty pays even if it takes long. Never stop believing and getting better with what you have been blessed with; who knows you may be awarded that grant; but never take a loan – small or a big to jump start your business. Start it with your strength and see what you can get from it. Then understand the market, you may or may not need the loan.

FG approves enrolment of NYSC members into NHIS By Simon E. Sunday @SimonEchewofun with agency report The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the enrolment of members of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme (NYSC) into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to guarantee them access to quality healthcare services. The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, stated this when he briefed State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting which was presided by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Adewole expressed optimism that the inclusion of the corps’ members in the health scheme would not only check the reported unnecessary deaths among NYSC members but would also ensure
that they receive the highest attainable level of healthcare across the country. “The other memorandum taken at today’s meeting had to do with how we will prevent unnecessary deaths among the corps members across the country. “The Council approved the memo that henceforth we will include NYSC members in the National Health Insurance Scheme across the country and this will guarantee access to quality healthcare across the country, prevent unnecessary deaths and also ensure that the NYSC members receive the highest (attainable) level of healthcare services across the country,” said Adewole. “We also informed FEC that we have not recorded any case of polio in 2017,” he added.
AEDC teaches pupils electricity safety, shares 1,500 books By Simon E. Sunday @SimonEchewofun
T
he Managing Director of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Engr. Ernest Mupwaya has taught about 340 pupils in Abuja some tips to ensure safe electricity at home while distributing 1,500 copies of exercise books to them. Engr. Mupwaya who engaged the pupils and staff members of Local Education Authority (LEA) Primary School, Wuse Zone 3, said, “There are some safety tips in the books that we will guide you on how to ensure safety when using electricity. “When you learn about this,
you should inform your parents, siblings and older ones so that they can avoid electricity accidents,” he noted. AEDC maintained that the sensitization of pupils was deliberate to help the children grow with the consciousness of electricity and its safety use as they are the future customers. He presented 1,500 copies of the exercise books to the Head Teacher, Mrs Theresa Atudume for distribution saying they should be used for schools by the pupils. The books, Mupwaya said show illustrations of electrical accidents and how people can avoid them to ensure that they safe. The AEDC boss said the firm
procured 20,000 exercise books to present to schools within its franchise areas of Kogi, Abuja, Nasarawa and Niger states. “Next year, we may double or triple the number as our objective is to capture the entire catchment area in which we are conducting business,” he noted. Mrs Atudume expressed her gratitude saying, “We assure you that we will be among those people who will be passing across what we have learnt today about safe use of electricity. “I promise you that with these exercise books that have been given to me to share to the pupils will go a long way to propagate whatever is your mission here,” she noted.
Youth urged to start summer club Tips to businesses to boost education By Simon E. Sunday @SimonEchewofun An Abuja based education and social entrepreneur, Rachael Ejoke has urged more youth to develop a passion and start summer club businesses targeting children and youth to boost education in Nigeria. Rachael said she uses her inventions, Words Barn Card Game and Starryclassix.com to promote such educational and social initiatives and that she routinely organizes Children School Clubs and Summer Programmes for Kids and Teens within Abuja. She said she recently partnered with the City Library in Abuja where she hosts Children Summer Programmes. Her work has o led to her being an Honoured Invitee to the Prestigious Digital Book World Conference in Manhattan, New York. “Children Summer Club is a club organized to engage children and youth educational and social activities during the long summer holiday. “Around the world, children who are left to play away their summer holiday time could easily experience a learning loss in comparison with those who were engaged in educational and social activities during the same
holiday,” she explained. She also noted that the business of hosting such programmes has great potential as many parents who are mostly busy will buy-in to keep their children engaged meaningfully during the holiday. “It opens the gateway for youth to enjoy a source of income during this period, thus it fills a business need for them. Those who organize the Children Clubs charge a fee for enrolment in the Summer Club. “It also presents an advantage for youth to spend their time positively as organizing these clubs contributes to positive educational and social impact in the society,” she noted.
