resident Muhammadu Buhari this week represented a N6.08trillion budget for the fiscal year 2016 before a joint session of the National Assembly. This brought about social media frenzy with some netizens in support and some not in support. Other had issues with specific part of the budget. Ibrahim Salisu Na’inna posted “It’s terrific, well planned and organised. Formally our confidence was shaken but after presenting the budget I became more confident and proud of my country! God bless Nigeria and happy new year.” “The budget is truly representing the change slogan, the concern is will the price of the Crude
oil in the world increase?” Asked Abdul Latif Muhammad Aliyu Iorkam Azoom posted “Too many contradictions in the budget, example inclusive growth without inclusive economic and political institutions! Centralization of control against expansion and diversification of economy! Lots of admitted superficial jargon, we must await the actions that tell the actual motives.” Adebiyi Adebowale John on the amount allocated for past presidents in the budget wrote “What is their job, after all the money they have stolen during their time, and N18000 is too much for workers (minimum wage)? This is crazy and waste of money.”

ow did your passion for advocacy start? I am from Yobe state. Being a volunteer director of communications for an outfit, Samira Sanusi Sickle Cell Foundation and the the Connected Development (CODE) where I work as a Programme Officer, I got better experience. I have a degree in English Language and a postgraduate diploma in Strategic Studies, both from the University of Maiduguri. I am also a Mandela Washington Fellow and an Associate Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society. How did you found the WAFSLI? I started the NGO in 2014 with seven friends. I was working with the National Polio Emergency Operations Centre when I started. My work took me to several rural communities and I noticed there was the challenge of access to water. Many of them refused to let their children get immunized because they felt the government has abandoned them, and if they don’t care enough to provide them with water, why should they bother vaccinating their children. I was a bit passive to the issue, until I went to Sabon Garin Gindin Dutse, a rural area in Tudun Wada LGA of Kano state. They refused immunization and even barricaded the entrance to the community with youth carrying sticks, hoes, cutlasses and other weapons threatening us. Although, we succeeded entering and were in a dialogue with the elders but the youth pressed harder with their threats. We decided to leave the hut and on our way out, they showed us a pond where they get water. It was a devastating sight, and they share the pond with their animals. One of them said, “You people from the city, when you come here to work, you don’t drink our water, you come with your bottled water and then claim you care about us.” I felt guilty because I also came with my bottled water. That inspired me to start my organization, and I went ahead to mobilize a team, my co-founders to set it up. What have been its achievements so far?

The poor bear the brunt of lack of access to water and sanitation according to UNICEF reports. It is tragic for children as nearly 1,000 die globally every day from diarrheal diseases linked to unsafe drinking water, poor sanitation, or poor hygiene. For women and girls, collecting water cuts into time they should spend caring for families and studying. In insecure areas, it also puts them at
Water is the sixth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and we are working to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation in rural areas. My amazing team are focused in providing access to potable water, and training rural dwellers on sustaining the water source we provide; we also educate them on regular sanitation and waste management. It seems the establishment is thriving. Do you have any challenges? Funding is arguably the major challenge we are facing but we have succeeded in developing some fundraising strategies. For instance, members make donations monthly, we also do social media fundraising campaigns, and occasionally partner with some event handlers to do fundraisers. We also have amazing people who believe in our work and have been so supportive. Next year, we are looking at developing sustainable funding strategies to tackle that challenge. You recently got the YALI Fellow award. How do you feel about it? I was awarded with the Mandela Washington Fellowship of President Barak Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) last year. It was an amazing and humbling experience. I was trained and mentored by some of the best minds in the United States on public management, leadership, policy formulation, publicprivate partnership, non-profit management among
risks of violence and attack. With more of these reasons in mind, Mustapha Gwary, a youth advocate founded the Water for Sustainable Living (WAFSLI). It is a volunteer based non-profit organization that provides access to water, good sanitation and hygiene to rural communities. He told Daily Trust YOUTHVILLE his challenges and his leverages in this interview.
others. It has helped to refine my leadership skills as I also got the opportunity to gain work experience there while building a vast network. How should government support in providing potable water? There have been a lot of talks about providing clean water by the government and a lot of money has been allocated for that but not much has been done. Government should compliment all the talks with action and possibly, declare a state of emergency on water. There has been significant improvement with some observed public water projects in rural areas but more needs to be done. Lack of access to water has caused many fights in rural communities leading to locals sustaining injuries and in some instances death, and such cases go unnoticed. Would you advise fellow youth to initiate more advocacy and impacting platforms? They should let their passion make a difference in their communities and that should be their driving force. Youth should justify starting an NGO because they would want to make a difference or make it a means of making money. But it should not be a money making platform; it should be used to give back to their communities and make all the difference! Yes, they have a right to earn a living to sustain themselves, but they should ensure that making an impact in their communities is their priority.

s you celebrate Maulud and Christmas this holiday season and prepare to usher in the new year 2016, you can’t afford to let cold or the flu slow you down. How do you prevent this? An online medical site webMd.com gave some tips on natural ways to prevent cold so you won’t miss out in all the festivities One of the tips involves washing of hands. The site wrote “There’s no mystery about how cold and flu viruses spread. Someone who is ill sneezes on his hand and then touches the telephone, the keyboard, or a kitchen glass. You can pick up the germ when you touch that object, even hours later. So wash your hands often. If you don’t have water, rub them with a hand sanitizer. In addition, don’t cover your sneezes and coughs with your hands use
handkerchiefs this will help enable you do your part to keep germs away from your family and friends. Viruses cling to your bare hands, so don’t use them to muffle your coughs and sneezes. If you don’t have a tissue with you, cough or sneeze into the inside of your elbow explains webmd.com A nutritionist at a private hospital in Asokoro, Abuja, Mrs Osas Egwebe, said drinking a lot of water would help to prevent harmattan related infections lasting through the festive period and beyond. In a local news agency report, Mrs Egwebe noted that when hydrated, the body flushes toxins and is kept refreshed all day. But eating lots of vegetable at this period helps to supply the body with the essential vitamins and minerals that would help it to fight infections.

a role? Well, it brings hope. When I said it brings hope, I am not being figurative. As you can see, some of our students graduating from the vocational studies centres today are very happy. They are not just graduating but they are graduating with tools. They are not going into labour market; rather they are going to train and create jobs for others. We start by teaching them with the tools, then we graduate into developing their mindsets so that their inner disabilities will not limit the actualization of their actual ability. Beyond that, we teach them how to run a sustainable Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs). As a young person yourself, what will you say qualifies one to be in the academy?

Text from Nurudeen Oyewole, Lagos ow did it all start with the Gazelle Academy? I will say it was my skills that helped me to get my first job. When I first came to Lagos, I didn’t know anybody; I was doing a make-up for a client who was the Human Resources Manager of a company I have been longing to work with. She said she has been studying me for the past few days, and based on that, she would give me a job. And after working for a while with them, I pulled out to be on my own. That is where we are right now. Today, we have Gazelle Academy, a vocational centre that specializes in skills acquisitions and business ventures. young Nigerian footballer, Kaduna-born Umar Sadiq has scored his debut goal for his Italian club side, AS Roma over the weekend, with his pace and finishing abilities grabbing the headlines in the country. The 18-year old Sadiq, was a graduate of Abuja Football College just 18 months ago, before crossing over to Italy, where he started his European sojourn at Spezia Calcio, a club that plays in the Serie B. The prodigy, who is being nicknamed “the new Kanu,” followed the footprints of his father, who played for the famous DIC Bees of Kaduna back in the days. The 1.92m teenager, whose physique and style reminds one of Nwankwo Kanu, scored a record-breaking 26 goals in 27 games in the Italian youth league, within his short period, which
generated interests from all of Italy’s biggest clubs. But AS Roma won the race for his signatures, snapping him up first on a year-long loan deal with the option to commit him to a permanent contract worth about 1.7 million Euros should the lad impress. After only 13 games, the youngster had scored in 8 goals for the youth team and assisted a few more, including three goals in four UEFA Youth League games with two assists. That secured his promotion into the senior team, with the manager Rudi Garcia pouring in praises for the Nigeria youngster, according to soccernet website. On Sunday, Sadiq had his Seria A debut, when he came on for striker Juan Iturbe in the 89th minute as AS Roma were held to a 2-2 away draw at Bologna in a highly entertaining game.

Do you have any pact with government agencies on this initiative? We have a running partnership with the ITF and we are looking forward to more with government and corporate bodies to sustain more projects. We understand that government alone cannot really do much but we expect that with more organized private sector pacts, a lot more could be achieved. What will the vision of the Academy be in five years? In five years, we want to see our Academy spread across the country. It is not just about Lagos state as we have a plan spread. We are implementing the plan hoping it comes to fruition.
