NACA, AHF mark valentine’s day with HIV/ AIDS testing, advocates protection, abstinence Text by Bamas Victoria @BamasVictoria
During the commemoration of 2017 International Condom Day in Abuja, the Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) Dr. Sani Aliyu warned youths on the need for abstinence, protection to end the scourge of HIV/AIDS. At the event which was organised by NACA in collaboration with AIDS Health Care Foundation (AHF) Dr Aliyu, said that “The main message is that if you are not sexually active, abstinence is the best way to stop acquiring HIV/AIDS. But if you are sexually active make sure you know your HIV/AIDS status and use a condom as much as possible to protect yourself.” The Country Programme Manager for AHF, Dr Adetayo Towolawi, said that apart from abstinence, the use of condom is a veritable tool in the prevention of HIV/AIDS that is why condoms will never go out of style hence the theme “Always in fashion”. AHF’s Abuja Clinic Coordinator Dr. Kema Anthony Onu said the he believes that the message is getting through to the targeted audience, but the challenge is in the implementation. He said “everybody knows about condom but not everybody wants to use it despite the fact that they are readily available. That is the orientation we seek to change.” He however clarified that “We are not preaching sex, we are saying that abstinence is the most effective way to prevent HIV/AIDS but condom is the most realistic way, and we are being realistic in the face of the epidemic we are facing in terms of infection and death therefore we cannot over-emphasize the importance of condoms.”

H
ow long have you been in fashion designing and what was the motivation? I’ve being into fashion all my life. The motivation came from seeing the stress people pass through to secure a good job. It made me decide to be a job creator and employ people with like minds. I wanted to help youths like me to show their creative side. You are into fashion designing. How did you learn it? I started designing professionally before gaining admission into the university and did it all through my stay in school. It wasn’t easy but with good time management and God’s grace I was able to pull through. Learning it was so easy because my mum is a professional. How much capital did you use to
start Sodiva designs? Well, not much because with as little as N50, 000 one can start up the business. No business venture is immune to challenges. What challenges have you faced and how have you coped? The greatest challenge we face now is electricity supply. It is not encouraging and we depend on generator for it. How do you source for your sewing materials? The materials we use are mostly sourced in Aba because that is where you can get good textile material and also other locally manufactured materials in Nigeria. Seeing that you have gone quite far in the art, what does it take to be successful as a fashion designer? It’s not been easy but to succeed, it takes creativity, perseverance and
the grace of God. How do you attract your customers? We attract customer through adverts and our good works also speak for us. In other words, we get referrals from other customers. So many people jump at the prospect of having a 9-to-5 job. Would you leave fashion designing if you are offered a white collar job? Not at all!!! I can’t imagine myself doing a white collar job. It is not my thing. Fashion designing is what I have a passion for. Your advice to prospective young entrepreneurs on starting the business For upcoming designers never be discouraged by anything whatsoever. Hard work pays and little by little, your dreams will come true and always trust God in all things.

There are different ways that ‘catch phrases’ get mainstream acceptance. One of such ways is when it is coined or used by artistes. Here are some of such phrases used and or popularized by Nigerian artistes. “See Gobe”: This phrase became a slang after it was used in a hit song titled “Gobe” by Davido. The word “Gobe” which means trouble has also been used as the theme for this year’s edition of Big Brother Naija which is “see gobe”. “Yels”: Often used to mean
Yes, this phrase was derived from popular hilarious TV series ‘Jenifa’s diary’ and it was used by Nollywood actress Funke Akindele. “Doro”: This word came to be on the lip of every Nigerian especially ladies who started using it as a form of description for themselves e.g. “Doro fine”, “Doro fresh”, “Doro pretty”. It was derived from the 2014 hit song “Dorobucci” by the Mavins crew. For example, a lady could be heard calling herself “Doro babe”, “Doro girl”. In other words, it became like a prefix to any word. “What I do”: Also gotten from
Jenifa’s diary, it is a way of asking someone “What did I do?” and it was also used by the hilarious actress Funke. “Baddo”: This word has its origin in Olamide’s song which coincidentally has the same title. When using this slang, it means you are extoling someone’s talent in a particular activity. “I miss abroad”: Though this may not be popular yet, findings by YOUTHVILLE show that it has been on the lips of few youths and grown-ups who are conversant with the hilarious TV series “Do good”.
