Fashion trends constantly dictate new rules: hi-tech, minimalism, neon lighting— yet, occasionally we feel like immersing into the warmth and comfort of old time style décor. Vintage style creates small details, seemingly unassuming things that have absorbed the mysterious spirit of antiquity, the same haze of time that makes our hearts tremble with anticipation of something painfully familiar, close yet distant, almost unreal—

Flowers as an Essential Decor Element Flowers - natural or artificial - are the mainstay of vintage style in interior design. During the so-called era of vintage floral bouquets in the house were an everyday occurrence and not an attribute of special occasions. A small poignant bunch is better than a lush and tall one. You can create an entire flower arrangement. Just try to deliberately give the bouquet a casual look as if it has been disheveled by a strong wind. Flowers can be placed in an ordinary

Vintage mood: Add an Aura of Antiquity to Your Place vase or a drinking glass, a vintage perfume vial, a bottle or even a beautiful cup. Use artificial butterflies or berries to decorate your bouquet.

Vintage Style Mirror Mirrors in antiqued frames are a great way to add a note of mystery. Instead of hanging such a mirror better place it against the wall as our grandparents did. The modern interior will do with a new mirror while the classic one prefers an artificially aged glassy surface with scuffs and scratches. Combine vintage mirrors with other antiqued décor elements. A single old mirror frame will look illogical and even bizarre. Therefore, add other mirrors, candlesticks, boxes, jars, pictures and table lamps in the same style.

Console Tables - a Product of a Bygone Era Console tables as well as little old tables on legs are an important component of vintage interiors. The smaller the table, the less useful it is – the more charming its look is!

This amazing object has never been meant to become a practical piece of furniture but rather a decorative element that adds coziness. Place a few faux antique ornaments on it to make the look complete and very personal. You can even create a beautiful composition of vintage jewellery, brooches, necklaces, pendants, handbags and hats. The more decorations, the better they look.

Furniture, Vintage Style This style can incorporate furniture of different periods. Elegant antiques, a wardrobe of the same age as your great-grandmother, a new table covered with light patina will clearly reflect the essence of a bygone era with a lot of chests of drawers, sideboards for elegant dishes and small desks. Try to find a massive wooden or wroughtiron openwork bed and chairs and upholstered furniture with wood inserts combined with fabric. Light scuffs on furniture and artificially aged knobs will complete the overall picture.

UNIVERSAL DÉCOR ACCENTS Picking out items to match an already completed décor is not an easy task because every interior style requires its own specific and highly individual details. Fortunately, there are unpretentious items that can complement any style from the pomposity of Art Deco to sleek minimalism. Most of them are recognized as classic that has taken a stable place in our subconscious thus making it acceptable for us no matter what style our décor is.

A table lamp with a classic shade. Being classic does not mean that the object has to belong to a particular style. This lamp is equally easy to imagine on a Louis XIV wooden bedside table and a chromeplated surface of a piece of furniture clearly identifying itself as high-tech. A white vase. Its shape and dimensions do not matter. It readily accepts any interior style. White is associated with purity and a vase in which we are accustomed to seeing flowers, with the eternity of nature, ergo life itself. Any décor element placed next to this seemingly simple object acquires depth and some allusion.

Black-and-white photographs add originality to any room. Moreover, if their frames are consistent with the overall palette of the image their stylistic property is blurred. This is understandable considering that colour fads come and go while black-and-white contrast never cedes its leading positions. An aquarium can come in many forms and its content, of course, will be a welcome addition to any décor. It won’t be out of place even in a contrasting oriental style because, with some effort, you can give your home reservoir such a saturated colour that even the bright Arabic style will look pale in comparison. Flowers are a stylish gift to any decorative style. The closer it is to the source the wider interpretation of style will become. They fit into the living space as naturally as any other living thing. After all you have never considered your cat to be a decorative item have you? Candles are popular within any style. They feel like a depositary of some ancient secrets and can make any room charming. Candles associated with warmth and light even when unlit are capable of warming the heart of any room, regardless of its style and decorative fullness.

WILL VINYL WINDOWS LAST? They don’t have the track record of wood windows, but chosen and installed with care, modern vinyl products can compete.

Strewn all across North American, homes that are more than 100 years old still have their original double hung windows. Although long lived, wood windows have some drawbacks. They need to be repainted regularly (a complicated chore because old layers of paint usually contain lead), they have energy-wasting single glazing, and they are difficult to seal against air leaks.

repainted. These advantages are largely responsible for vinyl windows’ share of the North American window market, which has grown from 24% in 1990 to about 66% in 2010.

Because of these drawbacks, many homeowners have abandoned their historic windows in favour of double-glazed vinyl replacement windows. The advantages of vinyl windows are fairly appealing. They are less expensive than wood, don’t absorb moisture, don’t rot, and don’t need to be

Vinyl windows do, however, have drawbacks. They are difficult to repair, they are available in a limited number of colours that can’t be repainted as styles change; and, according to consumer report tests, the average vinyl window leaks more air than the average fibreglass or wood window. With so many houses now being fitted with vinyl windows, a burning question is beginning to surface: How will these modern windows look and perform when today’s homes become historic? Manufacturer’s Warranties are driven by marketing rather than logic, and window experts are cautious with their predictions. The relatively short 40-year history of vinyl windows provides only limited data and our need for long-lived windows must be balanced against practical considerations, including the ever-changing demands of consumers, building codes, and energy guidelines. If vinyl windows are specified for a project, the best option is to choose a top quality model and have it installed professionally in order to ensure impeccable fit.

Our winters have been getting ever colder and the cost of heating keeps rising, so the most rational way of approaching the issue of heat in the house is searching for the ways to save. How to avoid overspending, prevent heat loss and generally use resources wisely without extra costs? Here are a few recommendations. AIR LEAK Cold air gets into our house from the outside while warm one leaks out from the inside. Quite tangible drafts and cracks are effortlessly detected and easy to fix with advanced means. Silicone sealants can help cover the gap in the ventilation, between the window and its frame or in the slots for wall lamps. Rubber gaskets are suitable for

Winterizing window frames; they will prevent the loss of precious heat. It is estimated that a standard yet a little more advanced procedure of sealing windows helps save about 30% of the heat. Direct costs may involve an electric heater, indirect, putting a kettle on once again to boil water for a cup of tea.

THE THERMOSTAT Often, we set air conditioning, heated floors and heaters to about 230 Celsius – a temperature level that seems to be the most comfortable. However, experts have calculated that in order to keep the body in comfortable warmth 200 degrees are sufficient. Moreover, such a regime keeps our immunity level optimal, does not make us heavy and sleepy and— saves money! Reduction by only a couple of degrees (21-22 degrees as a compromise) will save about 6.2% of heating cost.

ADEQUATE INSULATION It is true partially for apartments and fully, for houses. You can avoid additional 30% of heat loss by properly insulating and isolating the attic. Modern materials look very nice and take up very little space.

THE FIREPLACE No, this is not a suggestion to immediately install a fireplace and heat your house in this old-fashioned way. This is a tip for those who have a real wood-burning fireplace. Friends, do not forget to close the choke (and chimney, and the hearth itself ) when the logs have burned down to prevent heated air from escaping. When you just starting to kindle the fire open the choke a little wider - good convection will blow up the flame and the room will warm up faster.

A BATTLE FOR BEAUTY Not all radiators and ventilation outlets look beautiful and charming. Actually most of them look pretty ugly, and you experience an instinctive desire to cover and mask them. There is only one way to compromise: let the air pass easily through proper routes but paint the grates and radiators the colour of walls or floors – wherever they are located; this way they will blend into the background and will not assault your esthetic standards.

CARPETING Modern carpets and rugs look very attractive. Even manmade materials are now capable of satisfying all your needs: isolate noise, water, and air for keeping us warm. Arrange small rugs in strategic areas and do not neglect slippers and warm socks! Cold feet are a direct way to a nasty cold.

Polyurethane mouldings are most often used to decorate the line where the walls meet the ceiling. Such a moulding can be white or dyed the same colour as the walls. By the way, a contrasting colour trim – and this is exactly what the moulding is in this case - makes the room visually lower. Therefore in a room with low ceilings the moulding should be painted to blend into the wall.

A MOULDING IS NOT JUST A MOULDING Most people associate mouldings with architectural monuments of various periods, from antiquity to the 19th century. Plaster mouldings used to decorate palace halls and rooms in the houses of the rich and famous. Nowadays, anyone can feel like a Roman patrician or a French king as decorating a residential place with mouldings has become quite an affordable proposition in the matter of interior luxury.

The light weight of mouldings, simplicity of their installation and their affordable price all this has become possible with the arrival of polyurethane mouldings to the building materials market. Polyurethane (or polyurethane foam) is just a foamed plastic. Polyurethane mouldings are most often used for finishing and decorating. At the manufacturing stage polyurethane mouldings receive a base coat that prepares the surface for subsequent painting with all kinds of dye except nitro dye.

However, the use of mouldings is not limited to decorating the top of the wall - the scope of their use is much broader. OTHER USES FOR POLYURETHANE MOULDINGS IN INTERIOR DESIGN: 1. Polyurethane mouldings can be used as baseboards, door trim and door frames. When used in this capacity mouldings can be painted any suitable color. 2. Polyurethane mouldings can be used for furniture decoration, especially when covered with gold or silver metallic paint. 3. Polyurethane mouldings can decorate an interior door. Such an unusual ornament will transform a regular smooth door. 4. Polyurethane mouldings are used to create false windows. Glue photo wallpaper or a poster on a marked in advance square or rectangular section of the wall and cover it with Plexiglas. You instantly get a “window” overlooking a lush Japanese garden, sea shore or outer space. Imitate a window frame using white polyurethane moulding around the perimeter of the false window and crisscrossing the Plexiglas. 5. Painted or gilded moulding can be turned into a frame for an old mirror. For this purpose use an embossed rather than a smooth moulding. 6. Mouldings are often used to decorate the front of an electric or imitation fireplace. Polyurethane mouldings have been gaining popularity as an essential part of décor. They have significantly expanded the boundaries of design possibilities!

I CAN’T BELIEVE MY EYES, OR NEW CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGIES

Part 1

A 30-storey Building in 15 Days Chinese construction companies have, probably more than anyone else, realized the importance of proper preparation and organization of the process of civil construction. After all, these factors greatly influence the speed of the process. The experience of Broad Group Corporation that astonishes the world with its construction speed supports this statement. As of now, the most famous and large-scale project of Broad Group is the construction of a 30-storey Ark Hotel with the area of 17 000 square metres. This highrise was built and put into operation in just 15 days or 360 hours. During this time, 200 workers built a frame building, finished it inside and even set up furniture in it. The secret of such speed is the proper organization of construction and flawless logistics as well as pre-manufacturing in company’s plants of modular blocks used in constructing the hotel.

The Rug: Setting the Style A rug is a perfect design element. It fits all styles at all times for several reasons. First of all, it facilitates space zoning. Secondly, it creates warmth and comfort. And – last but not least - carpets, modern rugs or precious handmade ones help beautify and ennoble the home making it really cozy. SELECTING A RUG The intended function of the carpet helps to choose its shape. A square one in the center of the room will create a sitting area with clear boundaries, where you can enjoy barefoot comfort and where you can let free even a small child. A rectangular one fits perfectly in a bedroom or office where you intend to place furniture upon it, such as a desk or a bed. Oval, round or complex shape rugs must match the furniture. Tip: When choosing a carpet, test the strength of its pile – bend and try to trample it. A good rug returns to its original shape quickly and easily, therefore no furniture can cause permanent damage to it.

To select a colour is even easier: cool tones refresh sunny hot rooms while warm hues warm up the area with north-directed windows. A monochromatic carpet in a solid light colour or a delicate pattern on a light background (three-dimensional textured pile or unobtrusive pastel ornament) will visually enlarge the space. Large geometric patterns, especially in vivid colours will integrate a large area of the living room into an indivisible whole and give it uniformity. Modern synthetic materials are beautiful and durable, hypoallergenic, and easy to care for but demand for things made of natural materials does not lessen. Granite countertops, wood paneling, and luxurious wool carpet are the items that serve their owners for decades.

HOW TO TELL A HANDMADE CARPET FROM A FACTORY MANUFACTURED PRODUCT? One of the distinguishing features of handmade rugs is that they are not rolled for storage and easier to fold. A machinemade carpet is impossible to fold over four times as it is rigid. The reverse of the manual product is almost as bright as the face. This is logical, because these carpets are weaved from already dyed yarns. The fringe of a hand loomed carpet is its natural extension, whereas in manmade ones the fringe is stitched to the base. And finally, an express test. An honest seller will always give the buyer a chance to touch the product and to peruse it because a handmade carpet is an expensive proposition that will serve its owner for decades (high quality oriental carpets are known to serve for a hundred and more years). Fold the carpet on the front side, spread the pile and check for knots at its base. If you find those you can be sure that you are dealing with a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Attention – Sculpture! MATERIALS The smoothness of shapes, variety of materials and the play of light and shadows make sculpture a worthy and self-contained object that hardly needs an elaborate ornamentation. An appropriate background and good lighting will reveal the beauty and richness of the sculpture to its fullest. Each material has its own characteristics. Wood is eco-friendly and very warm. Stone is eternal and solemn. Marble does not need an introduction but it is more demanding to the surrounding space. Metal, either polished or coated with patina adds dynamics to the general chorus of textures used. Artificial materials are less expensive than natural ones but they can look very aesthetically pleasing.

Since ancient times, people have decorated their homes with works of art; artistic creations became a reflection of the spiritual aspirations of their owners. Sculpture, mouldings, high relief and bas-reliefs as a source of aesthetic pleasure as easily find a place in the modern home.

In addition to the décor style the purpose chosen can become a good guide to the selection of sculpture. An expressive threedimensional sculpture can with an equal ease become the final touch or the purest note, support and logically formalize the other accessories or be a totally separate entity elucidating the full meaning of the general décor.

QUALITY AND QUANTITY A small sculpture, Japanese deities, Chinese porcelain and French pastoral figurines look

more advantageous as a collection, either completed or just started. Larger forms require more space and, quite possibly, will supersede the other ornaments. Unlike painting, sculpture allows the use of replicas and duplicating of classical elements without lessening the status of the object. For that matter, a copy of Rodin’s Thinker in the right style décor will only accentuate the good taste of the owner. If there is no space (or courage) for a three dimensional figure you can always use a bas-relief, high relief, a moulding depicting a story or without it; they will still make the décor more elegant and bright.

Sculpture as a decorative object is very significant and is associated with a home of a collector, connoisseur of arts or with public buildings. Therefore, it is better to select it when the main interior design is already completed, because the style chosen for the house or apartment dictates the sculptural accents. Since sculpture expresses extreme emotional stages, from a peaceful state of Buddha to a frenzy of ancient deities, there is no danger that figurative and abstract works will make residential premises look too official. The power of expression turns a sculpture into a truly royal gift (especially when there is perfect compatibility between the object and its future owner) and a unique ornament.

in the price, which is important considering that many companies sell a basic unit thus obtaining an additional profit of 10 to 20 thousand dollars on upgrades. Not here though where everything is included.

4

And last but not least – if you plan to rent out your unit you should know that higher rental rates you can find only in the neighbouring Yorkville with its $1000 per square foot prices, while the rate of a unit at THE SELBY purchased at the VIP stage will be only $600 to $650, which is extremely low for a central downtown project located mere 100 metres away from Bloor St. And now let’s discuss the process of purchasing a unit in the project.

important developers in the GTA, which will undoubtedly lead to new projects resulting in the region eventually merging with Yorkville. This naturally will influence real estate values. Before introducing this new project I would like to congratulate all those who purchased units in two previous projects sold by VIP Condo Club - Garrison Point and AXIOM. This club was the subject of my previous articles. Both projects were sold out within a few hours. Construction is about to start, and there is no doubt that the prices the units have been sold at will be no more. So let’s move on. This year the condo market in Toronto has exploded showing a price increase of 7.6% compared to the beginning of 2014. A few extremely interesting investment projects have been introduced, and the project I would like to present today can easily become one of the best among them. THE SELBY is a freestanding 50-stories luxury tower at 592 Sherbourne St. (Bloor & Sherbourne) in Toronto. Its construction will be the result of cooperation by three most important developers in the GTA: CITYZEN DEVELOPMENT GROUP, DIAMOND CORP. and FERNBROOK HOMES. The tower is located at a 10-minute walking distance from the most expensive downtown area of Yorkville boasting real estate prices of $1000 per square foot. This area has attracted the attention of many

18

ALL ABOUT HOME

This neighbourhood has only recently become rezoned for highrise construction and, besides THE SELBY, another company – Lanterra Developments well known by its luxury ventures in expensive downtown neighbourhoods – has already been approved for several highrise projects. Yet, it needs to be mentioned that THE SELBY has an advantage over future projects due to the severe lack of space in the area. Other advantages include the subway station located just across the street from the future development and allowing fast direct connection to any place downtown, the impeccable design and a 4-story high podium containing amenities conforming to the best luxury demands. Now let us look at the investment component of the project.

1

As noted above one of the weightiest factors is the location – this neighbourhood will become one of the most prestigious among downtown communities.

2

Purchasing a unit here you invest at the initial stage of the total neighbourhood development at a price that will soon become the thing of the past.

3

Both the project and the developers ensure high quality. All units boast 9’ ceilings; besides, upgrades are included

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Those who have read my previous articles are aware of the existence of my VIP Condo Club vested with the right of the first sales in the best investment projects in the city. Note the word investment – this is because the majority of the club clients buy specifically for investment purposes. The club carefully selects its projects and choses only those with a definite investment component. This club has the right to initial purchases in THE SELBY. As always, the VIP sale will last just one day or rather a couple of hours since, as it usually happens, all the apartments offered get sold within two hours. The VIP stage for this project will take place on Saturday, November 15, 2014. The club has received the right of sale to 30% of the total number of units and we are talking ANY apartment in the building as long as the total number of the units sold does not exceed 30%. The rest of the apartments will come up for sale some time later at higher prices and different conditions of sale. Environmentally FRIENDLY RENOVATIONS We often thinks of making changes to our home – repaint, rebuild, or buy new furniture. These alterations need to be done delicately and carefully, without damaging the environment. Taking actions in all areas of human activities with the state of our environment in mind has become trendy in recent years. It applies to food and clothing, and, of course, interior design. So, how to make an emphasis on sustainability and frugality? Here are five ways to employ fewer resources. These methods are not easier than the conventional ones but if your goal is to satisfy your desire to spare nature here is the plan of action.

1

RECYCLED MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS

This rule applies to purchasing secondhand furniture (and it is possible to find excellent items among it!) instead of brand new sets. Also look for recycled finishing materials such as floor boards derived from the front of a dismantled building or wine boxes.

20

ALL ABOUT HOME

2

REBUILDING INSTEAD OF DEMOLITION!

Virtually any decorative object can be reused. Repaint the old chandelier and move it from the living room to the kitchen, use the tiles removed from the living room walls in your cottage and old linoleum, in a garage or closet. Careful handling of materials and common sense approach will help maintain the fresh appearance of the source materials and reuse them in decorating in a new capacity. Of course, this option is suitable for people with imagination in the same way as singing is the lot of those who have a voice and can sing.

3

GIVE AWAY YOUR UNWANTED ITEMS

Rather than to hoard things that take more and more space do good for charity and social environment. Simply put, sell for a nominal price, give away for free or donate the household items you don’t use. Not a penny will go into the bottomless corporate pockets while someone may finally have their dreams come true with the help of your dusty food processor, rubber boots or an unused bag of cement.

4

USE ENERGY SAVING IN REAL LIFE

5

VISIT THRIFT SHOPS

While some scientists decide where to get more energy others seek the ways of using the available one more efficiently. Take advantage of the fruits of their labour and the next time you change major domestic appliances purchase a product rated Energy Star, with an additional advantage of saving on your electricity bill.

More about antiques: sometimes people toss into garbage serviceable things because they have become tired of them, while you find this furniture attractive and usable. A couple of turns of a screwdriver, new fittings, a little varnish or a bright paint and –lo and behold! – you have new kitchen cabinets. And nature has had a reprieve too. To be continued

TAKING GOOD CARE OF YOUR KITCHEN HELPERS The refrigerator and microwave are the most important appliances in our kitchen. Here are a few tips for those who want to keep them in working condition for years to come. Vegetables stored in the fridge emit moisture, which promotes spoilage. Line the bottom of the vegetable compartment with a piece of paper and place a new dry dish sponge on top of it. This will absorb excess moisture that tends to collect at the bottom of the box. To maintain the shelves, especially the glass ones, clean cover them with a sheet of cling wrap. From time to time replace it – this will keep the surface of the shelf permanently clean.

The microwave oven has become an indispensable tool in a today’s kitchen. We use it daily to heat up our food, to defrost, and even to prepare certain dishes. A microwave often gets dirty because of splashes certain foods create in the process of heating. These splashes tend to stay on the walls of the oven and require special care.

A dirty microwave is not easy to clean, especially if the food particles have become hard. In order to quickly wash the microwave, pour a couple of cups of water into a bowl and place in the oven. Turn the oven on for 10 to 15 minutes. The steam formed by boiling water will loosen the dirt, and it will be easy to remove with a sponge dipped in a dishwashing liquid. There – the oven is clean, and it didn’t even require any elbow grease!

THE SWEET SMELL OF HOME What is the first thing you smell when entering your house? This is one of those small nuances that form an impression of your home in your visitors’ minds. A dwelling with no smells at all or an unidentified smell has a depressing effect on the spirit of its inhabitants while an individual and unique fragrance of your home can often make up the shortcomings of a standard layout. Let’s agree on one thing first: we are talking a place where there is no cigarette smoke. If you still smoke the only thing that can relieve the situation is an air freshener. Smells can instantly evoke certain memories. Each person has their own, induced by a certain sound or scent, so base your

22

ALL ABOUT HOME

choice of a scent on your own feelings and associations. Try to create a bouquet of smells in your place. The strong vivid aroma of fine herbs, fresh fruit, coffee, good wines and, of course, delicious food should prevail in the kitchen. Remember: sharp and heavy scents have a stirring effect that will hinder relaxation; therefore avoid using them in the bedroom. An appropriate smell here is a delicate sweet scent of potpourri containing lavender, mint and other herbs that are capable of soothing headaches and promoting sound sleep. Some hostesses use bathroom air fresheners in their rooms. No matter how nice you may find the smell these fresheners can be used only in extreme need because they may recall a wrong association. Besides, synthetic aromatizers used in these fresheners can be allergenic. There are more elegant ways to create a unique scent of home.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

If you have neither fine herbs nor oriental incense use essential oils. Just make sure you do not set fire to them! Buy a special ceramic evaporator. Pour a little water into it and add a few drops of essential oil (any kind you have at your fingertips: fir, cedar, peppermint, almond, rose, lavender, apricot ...) Place the evaporator over a burning candle. When water is heated the volatile essential substance will evaporate filling the room with a beautiful scent. Besides improving the atmosphere in the house the regular use of essential oils is also beneficial to your health. Fennel, geranium, jasmine, chamomile, lavender, lemon balm, rose and vanilla oils have a calming effect. Angelica, lavender, nutmeg, peppermint, rosemary, verbena, cedar and lemon tend to revive both the body and the spirit. Bergamot, geranium, jasmine, coriander, lavender, mimosa and patchouli help fight stress. Therefore, you can always find a scent that answers your particular needs.

Scratches and chips on wooden furniture or doors are a common problem faced by almost everyone. Scratches may appear as a result of both moving and an active everyday use. Your pets also often leave scratches on furniture. In most cases, small scratches and chips can be eliminated by domestic or overthe-counter means. Of course, it is almost impossible to fully eliminate scratches but it is pretty easy to make the damage less visible.

ADVICE #1. Use Walnuts A familiar walnut is a simple yet effective solution to the problem of scratches on furniture and floors. Shell a walnut, cut in half or into quarters and wipe scratches with it. Do not press too hard – the main objective is to fill up the groove with the oil found in nuts. After drying up the scratches will be much less noticeable.

HOW TO REMOVE SMALL SCRATCHES FROM FURNITURE tea into 30 ml of boiling water, let it brew and “wash” the scratch using a cotton swab. No matter which method you choose to eliminate scratches, it is important to check beforehand to see how the surface reacts to the substance used. To do this, apply it to the least noticeable spot and see how the wood responds. This will help avoid doing even more harm to your furniture.

ADVICE #2. Mix Vinegar with Olive Oil To make this mixture you will need 1/4 cup of vinegar and 3/4 cup of olive oil. Use the resulting liquid to wipe the general area containing scratches and wipe dry with a clean cloth.

ADVICE #3. Paint the Scratches over with Iodine or Lubricating Oil If the piece of furniture is dark enough (made of walnut, oak or mahogany) the easiest and quickest option is to treat the scratch with lubricating oil, wait a bit and wipe with a dry cloth. Another substance excellent for dark wood furniture is iodine. Depending on the width of the scratch you can use either a Q-tip or an old toothbrush dipped into a weak solution of iodine to treat it.

ADVICE #4. Strong Black Tea This seemingly simple but an extraordinary advice is very effective. Dip a bag of black

How to Care For Aluminum Cookware Aluminum cookware is very popular largely due to its low cost. It has undeniable advantages and obvious disadvantages but knowing how to care for such dishes you can get around the “sharp corners” and use all of its good features. HOW TO CHOOSE AN ALUMINUM DISH Thick walls. Aluminum is a very soft metal subject to easy deformation when dropped or hit. Aluminum cookware with thin walls is short-lived and unhandy. The bottom of aluminum dishes may be reinforced with an antideformation disk, which increases its lifetime by providing extra resistance to deformation.

HOW TO CARE FOR ALUMINUM DISHES Firing is a mandatory procedure before the first use of aluminum cookware. Pour vegetable oil into the dish to fully cover its bottom, add a tablespoon of salt and heat on high until the oil starts boiling. Let cool, rinse the dish and wipe dry. Avoid using abrasives as they may damage the protective layer causing easy darkening. Alum-

inum cookware may quickly turn black and lose its shape from cooking unpeeled potatoes in it. To make aluminum dishes shine add a few drops of ammonia to rinsing water. Do not store sauerkraut, pickles and mushrooms in aluminum cookware.

HOW TO WASH ALUMINUM DISHES Wash aluminum cookware with the solution of hot water, soap and a small amount of ammonia; the latter will help remove fat from the surface. After washing, the dish has to be thoroughly rinsed. A common problem of aluminum cookware is dark deposits on the walls. Remove them by using a solution of equal parts of vinegar and water. After applying the solution, rinse and wipe dry. Burnt food stuck to the bottom of an aluminum pot comes off easily after boiling baking soda in it for an hour.

ADVANTAGES OF ALUMINUM COOKWARE Aluminum is an excellent heat conducting material; thus aluminum pans heat up very quickly. All dishes made of aluminum are very light, can be easily moved around and stored on high shelves without worrying about the shelving’s reliability. They are also among the most inexpensive on the market.

DISADVANTAGES OF ALUMINUM COOKWARE It is not advisable to store cooked food in aluminum cookware for longer periods of time since aluminum easily reacts with organic acids to form harmful compounds. It is strongly recommended to avoid cooking spicy and sour dishes, stewing and roasting vegetables and boiling milk in aluminum dishes. Even a slight warming of the weakest acid or alkali destroys the surface of aluminum and as a result its harmful particles get into the food. Aluminum cookware needs constant supervision while cooking because the food made in it burns quickly.
