Oh, Spring! Not only you awake our imagination but you bring back to life various insects as well – especially those that are not welcome guests in our home. We are in a constant fight with mosquitoes, flies, and bugs. Yet, believe it or not, insects, together with botanical prints, have become a trend in interior design. And this is fine as long as they are used in patterns, drapes or appliqués, and not flying or crawling around your rooms.

2

Butterflies, Bugs, and Other Insects • Some people believe that bugs symbolize protection, simplicity, and progress – the very concepts that we often strive to convey in our homes. Add a few prints depicting bugs – it will be both a tribute to fashion and hidden symbolism; • Butterflies in the nursery décor are not only beautiful but practical as well. Why? Because they can be left there even when the baby becomes older, unlike other, too baby oriented decorating styles;

• A print depicting a butterfly will attract attention while not competing with general décor;

• Dragonflies symbolize renewal and positive energy; thus they will look great in the bedroom;

• An embroidery on a butterfly theme will greatly add to floral design textiles in your bedroom;

• Butterfly design can successfully replace florals on window coverings. It also makes a too formal décor lighter and happier looking.

• Dragonflies on the wall over your cooktop look unusual but natural. Interesting and unexpected accents always enhance décor;

• Combined with vivid live plants, an amusing print depicting a butterfly will remind of the spring beauty that awaits you outside.

Gold as a Trend The colour gold has been considered a sign of affluence, power and greatness since ancient times. Today, many of us try to avoid this colour in their decorating endeavours seeing it as tacky and pretentious. Nevertheless, gold matches any style of interior design, even minimalistic one. If done in moderation, the use of gold colour will add to any dĂŠcor. Gold is a warm colour and as such should be combined with other warm tones: chocolate, red, purple. It will also look good with greens and blues and especially luxurious, with black. Gold combined with white is great in a bedroom. Metallic surfaces visually enhance the space; thus gold may add a practical angle. The trend for gold in dĂŠcor goes mostly to certain elements as opposed to large stretches of gold colour. Even one small decorative object may add elegance, uniqueness, and radiance to the room.

SELECTING DRAPES – SEVEN WIDESPREAD MISTAKES Textile elements play a major role in the integrity of the interior design of any place. It is especially true for window covering. Therefore it is very important to be careful when selecting the right décor for your windows. There is no accounting for tastes, so we are not going to discuss fabrics, colours and styles. We will mention just a few major issues.

ERROR #1: FABRICS THAT ARE TOO PRETENTIOUS Danger: Visual overload. To Avoid: Do not look at textile as a separate design element. Each detail of the future décor needs to be considered in connection with other objects, colours and combinations. The best result will come when you assess the whole to see whether you have enough vivid accents or, quite the opposite, need to use more bright spots for diluting a monochromatic décor. Try not to be confused when shopping for window coverings. It is not easy to avoid, considering the wide variety of patterns, ornaments and combinations that surrounds you in the store you have entered in order to buy a calm solid fabric. Do not yield to temptation buying a length of fabric that is way too far from your intended style. Wait a few days to make sure that you really want to change your original idea. Remember – in the whole window dressing assembly you need only one accent; therefore you have to decide which it is going to be – the rod, the sheer or the drape.

6

ALL ABOUT HOME

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Only one element has a right to be the most active and to acquire the lion’s share of attention.

ERROR #2: MISMATCHED WEIGHT OF SHEERS AND DRAPES Danger: Unbalanced textures and visual disharmony. To Avoid: It is customary for drapes to be heavier than sheers. Therefore, select both fabrics at the same time to avoid disparity. It is especially important when selecting a heavier type of sheers. This rule is not important if you have decided to dress your windows in just one layer of window coverings. This method of window decorating is the best – just make sure that a view from the window is suitable for limiting your décor to a semi-sheer fabric alone.

ERROR #3: INCORRECT CALCULATIONS OF THE MATERIALS Danger: Unexpected outcome To Avoid: The best way to avoid this mistake is to use the services of a professional who will take measurements and then make and hang the draperies thus being responsible for the outcome. Otherwise there is a risk to miscalculate. Consequently you may find the end result that looked so good in the picture to be all wrong because, for example, the fabric was not wide enough for proper folds. To eliminate this risk, discuss with the window covering professional the end result you are expecting and ask for help in calculating the amount of the material needed. To be continued.

COMFORT IN YOUR HOUSE

Squeaky Floor Prevention Techniques In our previous article, we discussed our method of silencing squeaky floors. While our specially developed process effectively solves the problem of squeaky floors, we should keep in mind that this problem could be prevented in the first place or its severity can be minimized. Let’s start by examining a few causes of squeaky floors. One of the main causes happens to be seasonal environmental changes. Frequent changes in temperature and humidity levels are intrinsic to Canadian climate, and they take their toll on wooden floors. Floorboards start shrinking and loosening, creating hollow spaces

that allow for movement of floor layers, which, in turn, leads to squeaks. Therefore, it is important to keep temperature and humidity levels in the house constant and under control. We recommend that you do not allow the temperature to drop or rise by more than 5 degrees Celsius and that the level of humidity is maintained in the vicinity of 35%-40%. In addition to your home’s air quality, wooden floors don’t enjoy direct exposure to sunlight, as it can cause discoloration. We recommend using blinds or heavy drapes to cover your windows. This will protect the finish of your floor as well as help protect it from drying out. This is especially important when leaving for long periods of time. One of the greatest enemies of wooden floors is water. Water doesn’t only ruin the finish of hardwood floors, it can also penetrate the wood, triggering distortion and rotting. When washing your floor or in case of a spill, it is extremely important to wipe off any excess water immediately. A natural question may arise: “If water is so bad for my floors, how should I clean them?” This is a very important question, since a correct cleaning procedure is the key to healthy floors. Instead of sweeping, we suggest vacuuming the floors, allowing the dust to be drawn out from between the hardwood boards. Use a vacuum with a bare floor attachment, not a carpet beater bar that can damage the finish. It is also advisable to

8

ALL ABOUT HOME

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

vacuum the floors every week, as the fine grit will slowly wear through the floor’s finish if it is not taken care of in time. For washing your floors use products similar to a Swiffer along with a specially formulated hardwood cleaning solution rather than water. Not everything can be under our strict control. Just like many other things, a floor can be damaged by normal wear, with time. While it is not in our hands to stop time, we can control the way we use and abuse our floors. Since levitation is not yet an option, we do suggest refraining from walking in high heels and stilettos or outdoor shoes around the house. You can also protect high-traffic areas with rugs. Walking across the same area several times a day wears the floor down, so it’s no surprise that squeaks usually develop in these particular areas. Nice-looking throw rugs are the easiest way to protect those areas, but it is also important to make sure the rugs do not have a backing. Vinyl or rubber backing traps humidity, which damages the floor. Our suggestions are not hard to follow, and while they cannot eliminate squeaks on their own, following them will help keep your floors on their best behaviour. Keep in mind that while the above suggestions are general to all wooden floors, more can be said about each particular case, depending on your floor’s material, as well as its internal structure. That, we must admit, would require our expert’s advice.

Decorating the Ceiling We spend a lot of time selecting the right floor and wall covering materials while the ceiling often escapes our attention. Nevertheless it is the ceiling that provides a huge potential for creativity with unlimited options for styles and materials. Interesting décor for the ceiling can turn the whole place into something unique. There is no need to leave your ceilings looking simple, painted white, suspension or casement type. Pigments, wallpaper, mouldings, wood, glass or even mosaic are just a few suggestions for decorating ceilings. It is trendy to hang sculptured wallpaper on a ceiling. Applying paint, especially golden

10

ALL ABOUT HOME

pigment, to this wallpaper creates an antiqued effect. This, combined with dark wooden panels, makes the décor exquisite. Wood boards can become a ceiling covering of choice in a den or home office. They may come either as panels or even as floordesignated hardwood. Wood as a decorative material creates the most unbelievable effects. For example, combined with mouldings, wood defines the decorative style as classic. Smooth wooden panels in combination with carved elements give the room an air of luxury. This type of décor leads to ideal harmony in the room if you retrace on the ceiling the design used on the wallpaper, upholstering or a rug. It is also true for classic mouldings and murals. Murals can be used either over the whole surface of the ceiling or just on

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

its sections. The mouldings are usable for disguising the junction of the wall and the ceiling or for creating fanciful ornaments on the ceiling. A lighted stain glass or regular glass ceiling will visually enhance the space. Decorating with natural stone has been gaining popularity lately. One of the types to be used is onyx; due to its unique pattern and transparency onyx is capable of transmitting light. When used on the ceiling, it does not only result in a beautiful décor but also looks like an unusual chandelier. Textile as ceiling covering may result in interesting look. A fabric gathered in folds looks its best in a bedroom where it creates a cozy atmosphere. Be bold in combining various, often unexpected, materials for decorating your ceilings in order to generate a beautiful and most unusual décor.

The low-down on HVAC. stalled in tandem with a new furnace but they offer an effective way of recovering lost energy in the heating distribution cycle.

I’m sure you have heard of HVAC before but you may not know that this abbreviation stands for “heating, ventilation, and air conditioning”, and is a common term used in construction, covering a broad spectrum of air and temperature control mechanisms. More than 80% of homes in North America use a combination of a forced air furnace and an air conditioning unit to heat and cool the home throughout the year. A forced air heating system typically uses natural gas, propane, oil or electrical power to heat air and then distribute it through a system of duct distribution networks throughout the house or building. This system has replaced the hydronic (radiator) systems in North America starting in the 1950’s as a more efficient alternative. Yet, hydronic heating still dominates in Europe as the main method of heating to this day. The great bulk of forced air systems use natural gas as the primary fuel source. Forced air systems work very well with programmable thermostats and can accommodate humidifiers, air cleaners, air conditioners and HRVs (heat recovery ventilators). Chances are you have a forced air furnace and air conditioner in your home as well. They require little maintenance and typically last 20-30 years. One of the biggest downsides to a forced air system is that the air indoors contains a

14

ALL ABOUT HOME

lot of micro allergens, dust, mould and other unpleasant particles that your lungs cannot naturally filter. The nature of a forced air system is that it “blows” air around and, in so doing, activates dust and other “settles” particles that we then breathe in. So I recommend that you change your furnace filter every month because when you think of it a thin filter is all that stands between your lungs and all of the “invisible to the naked eye” air contaminants that your lungs do not like. As I mentioned before, the great benefit of a forced air system is that it works well with integrated air cleaners, humidifiers, and HRVs. These are three upgrades and addons that I would highly recommend that you integrate into your forced air distribution system. Air purifiers and cleaners come in a number of different variations but, in this author’s opinion, integrated HEPA filter systems are the most effective and costsaving option. These units attach to your existing ductwork distribution and capture return air before it enters the furnace, and the filters capture more than 99% of unwanted particles. Integrated humidifiers also connect directly to your ductwork distribution and help to maintain ideal humidity levels throughout the home, especially during the cold winter months when the furnace is blasting out warm dry air. With the recent changes to the Ontario Building Code, which focused on energy efficiency and conservation, HRVs are becoming more and more popular as a viable means to save on energy. Ideally, an HRV unit would be in-

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

And if you want to get away from the typical structure of a forced air heating system, the most practical alternative lies in hydronic radiant heating. In the past, cast iron radiators were the most practical method of radiant heating but nowadays and thanks to advances in technology, you can effectively heat your home with radiant heating that is integrated into your floors through a network of pipes located beneath your finished floors. Within this segment, we find geothermal heating that uses the earth’s natural stable temperatures several feet below the ground surface to heat and cool your home. Though typically more costly than the forced air alternative, hydronic radiant heating offers a more effective source of heating (heat transfers from the ground and through your body), uses less energy and eliminates the effects of blowing air that contains contaminants. Whichever system you are currently using or plan to use, I recommend that you consult an HVAC technician in order to explore the many heating and cooling options that would work best for you home.

Her Majesty the Orchid

Orchids are extremely beautiful and popular while their use in interior design proclaims the owner’s good taste. The orchid is a flowering ornamental plant that has lately acquired extreme popularity.

The colour of its leaves is a good indicator of the state an orchid plant is in: too dark leaves mean the plant does not get a sufficient amount of light while yellowing and spotty leaves witness the excess of it. In a room that gets enough light and fresh air throughout, the plant will be fine even in the middle. An orchid pot can easily become a focal point of any décor, especially if placed in the heart of the home which is usually a living room or a “great” room. Place it prominently – on a central table, chest or cabinet. This exquisite plant can make a great central element of a composition that includes other ornamental objects. The pot should be placed at an eye level.

Of course some types of orchids are more common than others, because the plant in general is rather fickle and, in some climates, has a shorter lifespan. For this reason, such breeds as Dendrobium, Cattleya and Phalaenopsis have gained many more admirers than other kinds. Despite a generally accepted opinion, your orchid is not always happiest on the spot you have allotted it. A wrong placement may kill the plant if common rules of the orchid care are ignored. The beautiful orchid is a light-loving plant,

16

ALL ABOUT HOME

and the amount of light it receives directly influences the length of its blooming periods. On the other hand, the orchid hates direct sunlight. Therefore, the best placement for an orchid is at an east or west facing window.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

When assembling a composition, remember that the objects surrounding the orchid should have a secondary importance. Thus, choose figurines in quiet colours and candles or vases that are smaller in size, to keep the attention drawn to your favourite plant.

NOT TINY – JUST COZY Capsule Inn (Tokyo, Japan) One of the most unusual hotels in the world has been prospering for over three years in Tokyo. This capsular hotel consists of two parts – a common room and a private space for guests where the famous guestrooms are located. A capsule room is made of reinforced plastic and contains all the conveniences of a hotel room, including a TV set, a radio, an alarm clock, lighting, the Internet, a comfortable bed and… no free space at all. The nightly rates for a capsule room in the hotel fluctuate from $24 to $49.

Das Park Hotel (Ottensheim, Australia) This hotel is different in that its rooms are built in former water supply concrete pipes. Despite of a rather Spartan look of the room, it is equipped with all the necessities for a comfortable night, including a sufficiently comfortable double bed with a warm throw, storage space and a spotlight on the bedside table.

sure there are a few holes in the bottom for draining excess water.

Repotting Process The best time to repot is from the first warm days of spring until the beginning of hot days of summer. Of course, in emergencies repot any time of the year. Some fast-growing plants like geraniums or begonia do their best if repotted two to three times a year. Replant flowering plants after all the flowers are gone or pinch off all the buds. Before starting make sure you have everything you need: • A new pot • Dry drainage • A wooden or plastic spatula • Proper soil

SPRING REPOTTING Why Every houseplant needs to be repotted at some time of its life. A plant needs nutrients and space for developing its root system. When the habitual amount of fertilizer seizes to be sufficient or the space becomes too tight, the plant starts ailing, becomes sluggish, the leaves yellow, and quite often it dies a quick death. It may happen even if you take a very good care of your plants. Another sign that the plant needs repotting is the appearance of roots on the soil surface. Plants purchased in a store always need repotting. Leave it in its original soil for a couple of weeks to allow your new green friend to get used to the new conditions of light, temperature and humidity. After that, repot! The soil used by manufacturers is extremely moisture-absorbent. It is also

filled to brim with long-lasting fertilizers but as soon as the effect of these comes to an end, the plant starts dying rapidly from the lack of minerals; at this stage it is virtually impossible to save. Young plants need repotting once a year, mature ones, every two to three years and old once – according to circumstances. Even if your plant has not been repotted for a couple of years and seems to be doing OK, repotting into a new soil once in a while won’t hurt.

The Pot The best pots are the ones made of clay – a natural porous material that improves air flow. Before using a clay pot, submerge it in water for a few hours to saturate the clay; otherwise it will absorb water from the soil thus depriving the plant. Let it dry. Make

Generously water the plant the day before repotting. Take it out of the old pot very carefully. Do not pull the stem to avoid damaging the roots. The best way is to turn the old pot sideways and lightly hit it against the floor, and then use the spatula to free the roots. A pot made of thin plastic can be carefully cut open. Free the roots from old soil, remove all the dry and rotted shoots while carefully avoiding the larger live ones. Apply a layer of charcoal. Try to leave a small amount of the old soil on the roots to supply necessary minerals for the first few days in a new pot. Wear gloves when dealing with poisonous plants. Now, immerse the plant in water and start preparing the new habitation for it. Lay drainage on the bottom of the new pot to the depth of 2 cm to 8 cm, depending on the pot size. Pour about one third of the necessary amount of soil and, carefully holding the plant, lay its roots. The base of the plant that comes out of the soil (its neck) should be 1 to 1.5 cm below the edge of the pot. Pour the soil in layers until it reaches the neck of the plant. Plants with a delicate root system need light soil. After the repotting is done, place the plant away from direct daylight and keep sprinkling it with water. Timely and patient care will result in healthy and durable plants that will bring you joy for many years.

CALLING A SPADE A SPADE 1 2 3 4

A SPADE. This is a universal utensil useable for various jobs. It easily digs the hardest soil and cuts roots. A SPADE WITH A ROUNDED BOTTOM. It is excellent for dealing with loose soil. A SPADE WITH A CURVED HANDLE. Thanks to its spoon-like shape it makes digging easier.

Spring! – the time of beautiful weather, light clothing and… hard work in the garden. So, let’s talk about the foremost of the garden tools – the spade. Spades and shovels are a simple implement used all around the yard for various household chores. What could be simpler? Nevertheless, spades come in many shapes and sizes, for a variety of different functions and jobs, and there are many different designs used in spade manufacturing. We will talk only about the most widely used.

A SPADE FOR EARTHWORKS. It has a longer handle and a peaked bottom that makes it ideal for digging holes and tranches in rocky, clay and other hard soils.

5

A SHOVEL. Shovels are broadbottomed and better suited for moving loose materials like sand, soil and other garden substances. Now, that we know about most popular spade types, you can decide whether to acquire the whole arsenal of them or, if shed space is at a premium, choose a regular spade for completing most of the garden chores. As far as the material is concerned, make sure that the metal it is made of is rustproof. The best of them are stainless steel or titanium. To check the quality of steel used in making the spade you are about to rest your choice upon, knock on it and see whether it clangs back. If it does – you have made the right choice. A spade with a curved handle makes the job easier by saving your back during garden work because its shape decreases the need to bend too low. When buying a spade remember to check whether it conforms to your height. For most garden jobs the best spade will be the one that reaches to about 10 cm below your shoulder. For some jobs though the handle should end at the elbow.

A HOUSE FROM BLUEPRINTS

Buying a house or an apartment from a builder may become the most exciting time of your life. Everything starting with the area where you want to live is important for you and your family. Make sure that your new home will suit your lifestyle.

We all have our preferences where the matters of design are concerned. Your floor plan should correspond with your notions of the right style. Put your imagination to work beforehand to figure out how the house will be furnished and decorated and see whether the floor plan will be right for implementing your preferences.

3 Make a list of all the pros and cons.

The builder’s blueprints allow you to understand what will be the way of life in the place. Its dimensions, shape, room location are the factors that can make it or break it. When choosing the floor plan that is right for you remember a few rules.

No floor plan is ideal. You will have to put up with some drawbacks in order to get the advantages. Make sure you can live with them at the stage of studying the floor plan.

1

Decide what the best size for your family dwelling is.

4 Make your decision based only on the blueprints.

No family needs a home that is too large for comfort but a tiny apartment may not feel too comfortable either. When making your selection, take into account how many rooms your family needs. The size of your future home is the most important consideration.

Even the most gorgeous exterior should not be the criterion for selecting the right place for your family to live. When looking at the floor plan disregard details and artist’s rendering in order to avoid taking a decision you may regret later.

2 Choose a floor plan that is esthetically

5 Use the services of a real estate agent or an interior designer.

pleasing.

A qualified professional can help you make the right decision. Besides, you will get a badly needed second opinion. An experienced real estate agent can also familiarize your with the local infrastructure.

6 Trust your intuition. If the offered selection is too wide go with your gut.

7 Decide whether you are going to buy new furniture or move in with the one you already have. Even though the floor plan is your main consideration remember the importance of the right choice of furniture and give this matter a careful thought. 8 Consider your budget. You may dream big but stay within your reality limits when choosing a new home.

9 Remember that the builder has a right to modify the original floor plans. Of course it is hard to come to terms with changes to the plans of your dream home but don’t despair – slight modifications may prove to be viable in the long run.

CERAMIC KNIVES Cooking is either a labour of love or a chore - depending on your attitude and aptitude. Those who love to cook always strive to make their kitchen cozy and convenient. The right tools for creating culinary masterpieces are extremely important. Of course, small appliances are indispensable for a good cook. It is great to have a good food processor or a blender. Yet, nothing comes even close to a set of high-quality kitchen knives. Among these primary cooking tools are knives with ceramic blades that have become very popular. Nowadays, they are sold everywhere – either in sets or separately. Are ceramic knives really better than their steel equivalents? There are certain advantages to having a knife with a ceramic blade. First of all, the ceramic blade is not prone to oxidation when it comes to a contact

with water and foods. This means that the natural taste of food is not going to be tainted by a metallic aftertaste and that nutrients will stay intact. This advantage is very important for health food adepts and in cooking for children. Secondly, believe it or not, ceramic knives are stronger than metal ones. The only precaution you need when using them is to prevent them from hitting hard floor surfaces. On the other hand, even when a knife with a steel blade falls on the floor, it may chip. A typical set of ceramic knives looks like a proper rainbow. Orange, red and various neon colours will make a nice ornamental touch for your kitchen dĂŠcor. The most important and attractive advantage of ceramic knives is that there is no need to sharpen them constantly. Ceramic knives are machine washable. They also preserve their original appearance no matter how long you use it. And lastly, they do not develop stains caused by hard water and oxidizing, as their steel counterparts do.
