Royal Luxury Palatial style is a mix of classic styles of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries during which the bright glitter of gold replaced somber Gothic style. Many features of such styles as baroque, late baroque, empire and classicism are all inherent elements of palazzo style. Don’t try to embrace every single detail of the style; just follow its main principles.

NON-STANDARD FURNITURE AND DÉCOR. Palazzo style implies the use of expensive natural materials and objects. Use gilded mouldings to decorate the ceiling, wooden panels, columns and pilasters - for walls in classicism style or fabric, tapestry or moulding for baroque, rococo or empire features. In the old days, the floors in palaces were made of marble and other natural stones laid in intricate patterns. Later, many of them switched to parquet floors. Today’s market offers a huge variety of floor coverings for your imitation palace, including laminate and parquet.

Classicism is characterized by earth tones.

Window dressing goes towards heavy velvet, satin and damask, and an abundance of decorative touches like swags, valances and gatherings.

Lighting. If your spacious room does not get sufficient daylight, use enough various light sources, from a huge central chandelier to wall sconces. Even a room that has adequate lighting needs additional light for exposing precious metals and accentuating luxury.

Any number of candelabra, statues and figurines, massive chandeliers and wall sconces, fireplaces and decorated boxes – there are no limits when creating décor in palatial style. The main principle is opulence, splendour and a lot of precious metals. There is no doubt, the excess of all this will impress every person who crosses your threshold.

Concealed Appliances. All modern appliances have to be concealed inside furniture in order to maintain the authenticity of design.

ALL ABOUT HOME

Baroque and late baroque prefer pastel colours with bright accents and the use of mother-of-pearl, gilding, snow white and pink. Furniture is opulent, with fancifully curved legs, backs and handles decorated by hand carving, gilt, patina, and inlays. Upholstery is rich – velvet, silk, handembroidered satin, tapestry, even, in rare cases, soft leather.

Space. First of all be realistic. You cannot build your “palace” in a regular size apartment or a smaller townhouse because the style demands high ceilings and large windows. The more spacious the place is the better because you will need extra space for fitting in a large amount of solid furniture and decorative items.

2

There are no hard and fast rules where the colour scheme is concerned. Here, also, various influences dictate different approaches. Empire style lacks softness and gradual changes; it offers bright gold, reds, blues, and purples with no half-tones. To soften the colours combine them with neutral hues.

The Bedroom and Your Imagination One of the most promising zones to use your imagination in interior design is the zone around the bed. The very private character of the space calls for something calm and cozy. THE BED AND ITS HEADBOARD

THE PLAY OF SHAPES This method is more expensive because a made-to-order headboard is a labourintensive job. Nevertheless, a bed with an unusual headboard can make a bold statement. This solution is unusual and charming, especially if the object is correctly decorated and also serves as a display surface for some good-looking knickknacks. • Asymmetry You can also combine the above methods – for example, use two non-identical pieces placed on both sides of the bed. It is a bold decision but, using a logical and daring approach, you can make your bedroom unique.

Sustainable Eco-Home – WHAT IS IT? Lately, Mother Nature has surprised us with various forms of natural disasters. Is this an appeal to humanity to stop its quest for progress, look around and realize that we should revise our attitudes towards our environment? Then realization dawns – we understand that rebuilding our natural environment is one of the main conditions for humans to go on. Yet, we are too used to the comforts provided by our civilization to let them go. It is perfectly clear that no one is willing or even able to regress in the process of societal development and infrastructure. Nevertheless, one can take certain measures to contribute to the so-called green living, and one of these measures is an eco-home.

THE ESSENCE OF THE ECO-HOME The environmental component of the ecohome has to be positive. Such a dwelling has to bring the use of energy to zero. This

way, while the house will not enable the renewal of environment it, at least, does not harm it. The positive component of the environmental living is the backyard where all the waste gets recycled by biologically intensive methods. This helps increase the ecological resource of the eco-home at an even faster rate than it would happen in the natural conditions. Another positive aspect of the eco-home is its affordability. An eco-home can provide its residents with the quality of life good enough to raise the next generation healthy. If a sustainable dwelling wins mass appeal we could hope for an improvement in human life, the population growth and a gradual renewal of our environmental resources.

receive all these comforts from renewable energy sources that do not harm the environment. You can use the energy of the sun, wind, or earth. Installing sun batteries on the roof of your house is not too complicated but it will move you one step closer to converting your dwelling into a sustainable one. The second condition is the materials used for constructing the dwelling. These materials should not be too expensive to manufacture, transport, and process. Thus, using local resources is preferable because this will help avoid the use of heavy machinery. Such homes are less expensive to build; therefore they are affordable for the less affluent. It is advisable to use wood, clay, straw, algae, dried plants or whatever else is at hand in the region where you reside.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REGULAR The third condition for the eco-home is the AND A SUSTAINABLE DWELLING? use of natural technologies for processing There are not that many conditions to a sustainable eco-home. First of all, any kind of living requires certain conditions. For example, today, we cannot imagine our lives devoid of electrical power, hot water and heating. Living in an eco-home we can

HOOKAH as a Décor Element The East has always been mysterious and charming in the eyes of the Western world. Yet, the travel possibilities of today make it and its art and customs less obscure and more popular. Many tourists bring back from their travels knickknacks inherent only to that part of the globe. The hookah is one of such objects, and this smoking accessory is a perfect décor element for a room done in Arabian style. Hookah smoking in its authentic environment is very different from the process under the same name that you may have observed in a restaurant stylized as an Arabian one. The hookah has been used for centuries for communicating with higher spirits or to accompany an unhurried con-

ALL ABOUT HOME

versation with friends and relatives, depending on the substance smoked. A hookah of today is an ornamental element of oriental culture combining curved lines, vivid colours and intricate hand drawn patterns. Nevertheless, the importance of the smoking characteristics of this ornament is always present in its manufacturing; it is the quality of the flask and pipes, the air circulation system and other aspects of enjoyable smoking. Hookahs are usually made of glass, metal, including precious ones, crystal, and brass. A hookah as a decorative object needs special treatment and will not fit just any décor. This doesn’t mean that, in order to use it for decorating, one needs to switch to Arabian style. There are several less drastic solutions. • Minimize the number of details. Oriental style despite its opulence is not about excess. No need to hang the walls with rugs or lay a stone floor; just a few

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

accents will suffice. • Ensure appropriate furniture – low sofas and ottomans upholstered in bright colours and smaller wooden carved tables. • Use exotic textiles – silk, brocade, organza, velvet. If you don’t like a lot of it, don’t go for the whole room. Rather make one section of the room oriental looking. This section can be screened off from the rest of the space by a light organza canopy decorated by brocade because it is very oriental-like to combine fabrics of opposing thickness. The mood can be enhanced by a small rug with an arabesque motif. • Accessories should gather around the hookah as a central object of the décor. A multitude of brightly-coloured cushions with non-repetitive patterns, incense burners and large metal plates and jugs are all part of the Arabian style paraphernalia.

SELECTING DRAPES – Seven Widespread Mistakes ERROR #6: WRONG COLOURS Danger: Interference with a consistent look. (Cont’d From the April Issue)

ERROR #5: TOO MANY DETAILS Danger: Drapes will look tasteless. To avoid: Try not to be confused when shopping for hardware. Avoid buying good looking brackets, fringes, tassels and other ornamental fittings if you did not plan for them at the first place. Window dressing has to be straightforward; any excess, apart from the direct and consistent following of a certain historical style, looks tasteless.

10

ALL ABOUT HOME

To Avoid: Contrasting or vivid accents are secondary to the correct combination of colours. The colour has to be the main criterion when selecting textile for window covering. It needs to match the colour scheme of the whole room. For example, if you plan on buying green drapes but already have a green sofa in the same room compare the intensity of the colour and its shades. It is not a secret that emerald and hunter, both being greens, are different shades of this colour and cannot be combined without stripping your décor of harmony. The best way to avoid it is to come to the fabric store armed with a swatch of

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

the sofa upholstery, a colour sample or, at least, a good quality photograph of the object taken in natural light.

ERROR #7: WRONG CUT SIZES OF THE SAME FABRIC Danger: Breaking the print pattern. To Avoid: When looking at the amount of fabric, take into consideration your room height and the necessary length of the panel. Remember that no printed fabric is consistent throughout the roll. There might be a need to make a cross cut which may change the design by 90 degrees. Then, for example, the elements of a paisley pattern could end up horizontal instead of vertical. There are many fabrics that can work both ways but just in case make sure it is true in your case.

Decorating with Plates Plates as the means of wall decoration can successfully compete with paintings, photographs, mirrors and other traditional objects. The only requirement for using ornamental plates is to hang them correctly to achieve harmony. There are several ways to do it. STRAIGHT LINE If you wish to accent a certain section of the wall the best way to attain this effect is to hang several plates in a straight line. This composition looks its best either over the headboard in the bedroom or, in other rooms, over a piece of furniture or the mantle if this object is exactly the piece you wish to emphasize.

SYMMETRY In pronouncedly symmetrical rooms where furniture is evenly distributed along the walls and the walls themselves are decorated with symmetrically hung paintings, do not hesitate to install your plates vertically above one another at an equal distance from the object you wish to underscore, be it a fireplace or a large mirror.

A GEOMETRICAL FIGURE This compositional solution is great for decorating an empty wall space of a certain shape. Hang numerous plates all over this section in a pattern that repeats its square or rectangular shape.

12

ALL ABOUT HOME

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

WAVELIKE COMPOSITION This way to organize decorative plates looks great on a wide wall stripped of any other ornaments. Use a simple office pen to draw a freehand winding line directed either upwards or downwards. Then hang different diameter plates along this line.

AN ARCH This is an interesting way to decorate a section around a large window, a mirror or a painting. Select smaller round or oval plates and hang them in such a way as to create a classic arch over the central object. This composition will be especially advantageous over the headboard in your bedroom or the hallway mirror.

A NARRATIVE This way to organize decorative plates successfully replaces a painting. If each of your figurative plates has a depiction of some event, hanging them in a sequence will create an artistic narrative. In this case place them side by side with no spaces to make the narrative as clear as possible.

HODGEPODGE When there is no time or desire to create a clear composition, hang your plates in a random order with just one objective – to fill up the required section of the wall. In this case there is no need to worry about the style or size. Even a few plates can become a beautiful and unusual accent in any room.

#3 - Replace damaged and old fascia boards, eavestroughs and downspouts with new aluminum ones. Go with copper if it will match the exterior brick/stone/ stucco/siding. #4 - Replace old and damaged windows and doors. #5 - Paint as necessary. #6 - Replace the old, cracked/sinking driveway. #7- Spruce up the landscaping. The bigger the yard, the bigger the possibilities!

CURB APPEAL One of the most underrated renovation projects is outside your home!

It’s no mystery that first impressions are usually lasting impressions and when it comes to your home, until we have mastered teleportation, anyone who sees your home will first have to see it from the outside. Nevertheless, when it comes to renovating, most people focus nearly all of their energy, money and efforts on the interior. After all, you’re not going to be living outside, right? No you are not; but did you know that an exterior renovation is among projects that bring greatest return on investment? The truth is that the exterior of your home holds a ton of design potential that, in most cases, is hardly tapped. The reason is that most homes were built by production builders. Production builders usually expend all of their resources on the actual home. Traditionally, future homeowners have selected their homes based on plans, sketches, and architectural renderings. Once the home has been built, you would be lucky to even find a builder who would erect a fence around the backyard or do much beyond laying down some sod. So by the time the home is built and turned over, most people

14

ALL ABOUT HOME

just want to move in and live in their new home. Not many people have the flair or know-how to tackle the landscaping. So the trend continues and years later, when it’s time to renovate, most people address the interior. Older homes are a prime example of how neglected the exterior of the home can become. Old shutters, damaged eavestroughs and downspouts, rotting fascia boards, neglected landscaping, broken fences and gates, cracked and aged driveways, sinking steps, and so on. The fact is you don’t have to spend a fortune to fix this mess. Ninety five percent of everything on the exterior of your home can be changed without any significant structural modification. Nearly all of it is cosmetic. Luckily, we live in a time and age where there are a plethora of options in materials to choose from. For nearly anything that you can imagine, you will find a wide range of options and selections. So if you are considering some exterior upgrades, here’s my quick and dirty list of favourites: #1- Remove the old vinyl/aluminum siding and install composite siding. Super easy renovation project with a great return. #2- Replace any damaged/rotting wood with a composite alternative. Composite lasts a very long time and doesn’t rot, twist, shrink, or crack. This includes decks and steps.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

You can do all of the above renovations to your home without a Ph.D in construction and for about the same budget as an average bathroom renovation. If done right, you will be amazed at the transformation and furthermore you will have received one of the greatest returns on your investment and, hopefully, have raised the value of your property at the same time! Now, time to invite the neighbours over to a summer BBQ and a little showing off.

FOR YOUNG ARTISTS Children love drawing and painting, which may help young talents turn their attention from their computers to some creative endeavours. EASEL An easel in the nursery is a great solution. Easels for children come in many varieties. Just the same, when buying it for your future Picasso, always check the packaging for the recommended age. The board does not take too much space and is easy to fold down and put away. Children’s easels are equipped with spacious shelves and supports for storing pencils, crayons, and paints. Two- and threesided easels are very popular because each side has its own surface – from slate to canvas paper.

WALL SLATE BOARD Slate boards are greatly preferred because they allow dividing a nursery to zones for various functions – just hang it in the play zone. This way the child may use it not only for drawing but also for homework. If you cannot find a board of the shape and size you need in a store don’t give up – you can easily make it yourself. Just buy the needed paint and apply it either to a clean board or even on a section of the wall or the side of a cabinet. Besides, slate comes in many colours, not just black – so have fun experimenting.

Men’s Favourite Kinds of Housework No two families are alike where the distribution of housework goes. Nevertheless, there are some chores that suit men better, especially considering that they are not too labour intensive and do not cause negative emotions.

Vacuuming. If you give a man several choices including window washing, floor mopping or vacuuming carpets, he will more often than not prefer the latter. The reason is that modern vacuum cleaners are advanced and powerful machines fitted with various attachments that have to be changed during the cleaning process. Thus, for a man, a vacuum cleaner is something

of a construction toy that he has not had enough to play with in his childhood. Cooking. Sometimes, a man feels romantic. In this case he may go into the kitchen to cook a meal for his beloved. All you need to do is to praise him for his culinary masterpiece and assure him that he saved you from starvation because you were so tired as to not being able to gather enough strength to prepare something more complicated than peel an orange or slice an apple. Men like being flattered and commended. Grocery Shopping. The man has always been considered a breadwinner who has since the dawn of time been expected to procure food and clothing for his family. No matter how advanced our society is, not much has changed since those dark times – the man is still expected to procure things for his family. Among his responsibilities as a provider is procuring food items from the neighbourhood grocery store. Hammering Nails and Fixing Taps. We are aware that if needed a woman can do minor repairs but it is wise to play a role of a weaker sex sometimes and allow the man in your life show his talents. Taking Out the Trash. This is considered to be a purely male prerogative because it does not require too much time or energy while it may avert some more difficult-to-fill requests. Therefore, most men wordlessly comply. Taking Care of Family Pets. This is not an easy task but it provides men with unlimited supply of reminders about their feats in this field: how many times he walked the dog, changed the litter, fed the hamster, changed water in the fish tank, etc. As a reward men will feel entitled to an extra incentive like a fishing trip or sports watching. Car Wash. This is the favourite among men. No one can do the job more thoroughly. While working on this task a man is completely involved. On a serious note though, no matter how house chores are distributed in your family, the main thing is to provide help and support for each other.

Trendy Colour Schemes in Interior Design

Each year brings with it future plans, hopes, and resolutions as well as new trends in interior design. Companies that specialize in this area have introduced new colour trends from the start of 2014.

THE LUXURIOUS AND VIBRANT PURPLES The colour purple was extremely popular throughout the whole last year; therefore designers continue the trend in the new year. The Pantone Colour Institute has introduced its Radiant Orchid, while Sherwin-Williams preferred the Exclusive Plum. While the former looks vibrant and airy, the muted latter looks sophisticated and opulent.

THE ELEGANT AND RESTRAINED GRAYS Gray fits both interior and exterior décor. It has been persistently becoming the new white. Designers happily replace traditionally white and off white walls with gray tones creating an exquisite classical atmosphere. The Paint Quality Institute considers gray an “intellectual” colour that will become the most popular neutral.

THE HAPPY MUSTARD Nothing brightens up the décor like a few strokes of yellow and the most luxurious of it is mustard – the colour that is extremely trendy this year. It symbolizes prosperity, style and life-giving warmth that are integral for a modern dwelling.

THE BREATHTAKING BLUE The colour blue is a classic that will never go out of style. It is the foundation of many popular decorating styles and themes that cannot manage without it. Whether calm sky blue or vivid aqua blue, it fills the space with positive energy and lifts the spirit.

THE STYLISH GOLD AND SHIMMERING SILVER Gold is one of the trendiest hues this year. This colour is warm, not too striking but opulent. Gold in combination with silver looks fantastic. For accents in a modern décor in neutral tones try shining brass. Silver used instead of whites and grays enhances the look. The only requirement is to approach the use of gold and silver with care and restrain.

STORING FOOD IN THE FRIDGE ishable foods like milk or cheese on the door shelves.

3. Cooked Foods Cooked items should be kept in the fridge in tightly closed containers, which will not only extend their lifespan but will keep the smells separate.

4. Separate Storing Separate different types of food from one another. Raw fish and meat should be placed away from items ready to eat. Keep fruit and vegetables in different containers to prevent cross-rotting.

5. Cleanliness Make sure your refrigerator is always clean. All food needs to be tightly and neatly packaged. It is a good idea to line the vegetable and fruit bins with antibacterial pads that generate an additional layer of air to keep the food fresh for a longer time. Wash each shelf at least twice a month using dishwashing detergent.

6. Tinned Foods

A refrigerator was patented August 8, 1899 by a Minnesota inventor Albert Marshall. His invention has changed the food storing concept forever. You will hardly find a fridge-less kitchen nowadays. Many people think that placing food in the fridge haphazardly is OK but it is not so. Incorrect ways of storing food in the fridge may result in spoilage, ageing, and unpleasant odour. Besides, overloading impedes air flow in the fridge.

There are certain rules as to how to store food in the refridgerator. Follow them to keep your food items fresher longer.

1. Shelving One of the most important principles regarding food storing is the correct shelving. Each level in the fridge has its own temperature. Dairy products should go on the top, the warmest, shelf. The lower, coldest, shelves are best for keeping meat and fish, and specifically designed drawers hold fruit and vegetables.

2. The Door The door is the warmest place in the refrigerator. It’s not a good idea to keep per-

Tinned foods have no place in the fridge. First of all they have an extended shelf life and are not sensitive to the temperature they are stored at; therefore refrigeration is not required. Besides, a large numbert of tins may interfere with fresh foods in the fridge by disturbing the air flow, which may change the temperatures inside the fridge.

7. Zero Degree Compartment Many modern refrigerators are equipped with a zero degree compartment also known as the freshness zone where the temperature is maintained at a level close to 0 degrees Celsius and the humidity level, at its optimal point. Food placed in this zone retains its original taste and its freshness longer. This compartment is the best for perishable foods like fresh vegetables and fruit, herbs, cheeses, seafood, and raw meat, poultry and fish.

Buying a Mattress? Avoid Mistakes

28

There are no classes on how to buy a mattress so more often than not we learn the secrets of this art by trial and error. Some people rely on the advice of store employees, others, on same of friends and family, while the third study all the pros and cons. If you are reading this article now you probably belong to the latter category.

has not purchased a mattress recently, their opinion is not substantiated. But even if they have, it doesn’t mean that their experience will serve to your satisfaction. People are different. Something that pleases a short and chubby person will not be right for a tall and lanky guy.

Mistake: My neighbors say that a hard (soft) mattress is better. I think I will follow their advice.

Mistake: I want to buy an orthopedic mattress as opposed to a mattress filled with latex or some other filler.

This is probably the commonest error. We are used to listening to other people’s opinion without even putting their expertise under scrutiny. If a person rendering advice

This mistake stems from ignorance. Many people are sure that mattresses come either with filler or as orthopedic. Thus, the potential mattress buyer wants to pur-

chase a mattress made of some unknown material and is disappointed when offered a standard mattress. Nevertheless, the problem will persist no matter how many stores you visit. An orthopedic mattress, being made specially to prevent or ease back problems comes filled with one or another type of material, no matter what its other characteristics are. The only difference is that an orthopedic mattress is made right and usually has a hard surface. One more secret revealed: there are no standards according to which a mattress is considered to be orthopedic. Because of this, some manufacturers seize a chance to give a big name to a good quality mattress made of modern materials. They can have any kind of filler, be soft or hard – in short, a mattress is a mattress, and the main thing is that it fills your requirements.

ZODIAC AND YOUR BEDROOM

No matter how carefully you plan your bedroom décor it may prove to be all wrong. The best furniture, beautiful accessories - yet you may still feel uncomfortable in it. The reason may prove to be simple – incompatibility of all these colours and elements with your celestial sign.

TAURUS. Your bedroom will look best if done in earth tones - green, yellow, and brown. Combining furniture from different sets and different types of lighting fixtures you will satisfy your creative ambitions.

GEMINI. Since the name of this sign implies the presence of two different per-

ARIES. You may like red but use it in mod- sonalities in you, your best bet is the coneration when decorating your bedroom. A red figurine or a picture frame will look great against the background of yellow and golden. Try to add as much light and air to your bedroom as possible by hanging lightweight sheers that will enhance coziness and calm.

trast play. Romantic curtains against conservatively coloured walls will emphasize the duality of your nature and pick you up emotionally. Try to divide your bedroom into functional zones; for example, a large and comfortable bed will peacefully live next to a desk.

CANCER. For this sign, the bedroom is considered to be the most important room. Light shades of white, silver and blue have a relaxing effect. This room can serve not only as a place to sleep but for engaging in favourite activities – read, watch movies or even exercise. Therefore the bedroom should be equipped with all the necessary objects.

LEO. They go for shock value, preferring rare artifacts and most unlikely colour combinations. Choose a yellow, orange or brown colour scheme for the best result. Take special care of your cloths and their storage to make sure it helps you look your best at any time; the best approach to ensure it is to choose a convenient and spacious wardrobe with mirrored doors.
