I would tell them the same thing that I tell our apprentices and new carpenters: that success of your project will largely depend on your ability to keep calm and carry on in the face of adversity. Don’t be afraid to step away from the project, re-zone, and come back to it with a fresh mind. But most importantly, don’t give up!

THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL IN A DIYer’s POUCH

Sure, I could tell you about the latest innovations and practices in architecture or construction, but inevitably, you will be setting off on your own adventure to

When creating a certain decorative style for you home always remember the basics of interior design, especially the one that is called rhyming. Rhyming in the context of interior design ensures harmony and comfort and helps turn the room into a complete space where all the objects match one another, complement one another and emphasize one anotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advantages while concealing faults. There are several ways to achieve rhyming, repeated colours, shapes, textures and patterns among them.

While selecting ornamental objects for your room pay the foremost attention to their colours. Accessories have to match the colour of one or another object in the room. For example, the window coverings will preferably rhyme with the upholstery, cushions, the table cloth or picture frames in colour or texture. This combination looks harmonious and creates a completed image. Whether you will match the colours exactly or allow for a slight difference is not of great importance as long as they are of the same hue, even with a divergence of a few tones.

The patterns found on various objects in the same room should also rhyme. It is true that by no way you can get identical patterns but try to select décor elements whose style matches. For example, if the fabric of the bedroom drapes bears Japanese hieroglyphs, try to repeat them on at least one ornamental object and avoid let’s say Mexican design on the bedspread.

Patterned wallpaper can be rhymed with sofa cushions, upholstery, floor lamps or rugs that should be selected based on one of the colours in the wallpaper pattern.

Sofa cushions rhyme easily with the pictures over that same sofa. Select pictures in such a way that they repeat the colour of the cushions or create a panel of the same fabric and frame it.

Large décor elements – tables, chairs and armchairs, drapes, etc. - can be easily subjected to rhyming.

Some decorative elements need rhyming more than others – like golden or silver toned accessories and red or shiny objects.

AN «IDEAL» PALACE OF A FRENCH POSTMAN

This structure is called an Ideal Palace (Palais idéal) constructed by one Ferdinand Cheval and it is a reminder that any human is capable of reaching any target has he sufficient time and patience. An ordinary mailman who had no special skills managed all by himself and with his own hands created a masterpiece worthy of admiration no less than Picasso’s works.

The Palais ideal made of stone, cement and wire is a whimsical mix of various styles, with obvious features from the Near East, China, and

Algeria, all influenced by Antonio Gaudi designs. The palace walls are carved with citations from Christ and Buddha, and the rooms are embellished with mysterious figures and ornaments. In 1969, when Ferdinand Cheval was still alive, De Gaulle’s government declared his structure a protected historical site. By the way, regardless of the rich exterior of the building, there is only one sensible room inside it and the builder and owner used that room as tool storage.

Ferdinand Cheval was born in the vicinity of Lyon, France. Even when he was young, people realized that Ferdinand was an eccentric. He had shown unusual persistence, reserve and dreaminess. Therefore when he became a mailman his choice of trade did not surprise those around him – isn’t this the best occupation for a character like him? On his rounds, Ferdinand used to make up to 30 kilometres a day. And because the area he lived in had been a sea floor centuries before, he always encountered various stones, one more beautiful than the next. Once, making his rounds, Cheval found an unusually handsome rock. This moved him to start looking for more of the same kind, and his search turned to be fruitful. «Since Nature provides me with building materials, I just have to become an architect and a mason», Ferdinand decided wisely

UNCLOGGING THE DRAIN Plumbing has a tendency to clog from time to time. This is a real nuisance accompanied by many unpleasant things, from a nasty odour to the impossibility to use sinks and toilets. Every homeowner needs to know the basics of unclogging drains.

Advice: If there is no commercial unclogging agent at home, try to use regular dishwashing liquid by pouring it into the drain and wait overnight or make your own solution by mixing 200 grams of baking soda with undiluted vinegar.

UNCLOGGING WITH THE HELP OF CHEMICALS

A PLUNGER

The first and most obvious way to clear a clogged drain is using a store bought remedy for clogs. There may be some variances in the use recommendations but most of these solutions have to be poured into the drain with one to two glasses of water added. Usually you have to wait 20 to 30 minutes, then open the tap and run water for several minutes.

Clearing the clog with the help of a plunger requires no special skills. First, close the plughole in order to maintain the pressure in the pipe. Then, cover the drain in the bathtub or toilet with the plunger and fill with enough water to cover the rubber part of the plunger. Pump energetically a few times.

THESE AGENTS CAN BE EITHER ACIDIC OR ALKALINE Acidic agents are the best for clearing hair and soap deposits; therefore they should be used to unclog bathroom drains. Alkaline agents fight greasy deposits and as such are recommended for unclogging kitchen drains.

Remember that aggressive chemicals may be harmful for both human health and the state of your plumbing.

If the first attempt has failed, repeat the procedure. A plunger can help only with smaller clogs formed by small particles.

CLEARING THE FLUSH VALVE If your plumbing includes a flush valve, clear it before even starting the process of unclogging pipes and using other, more complicated methods. Often the valve is the very element that causes the clog due to greasy deposits collected inside it.

Take the valve off, clear it with a degreasing agent and mount back. If the problem persists you will know that the clog is beyond the valve.

A PLUMBER’S SNAKE This is the last resort for unclogging your plumbing when all else fails. A Plumber’s snake or a cable auger is a long, flexible steel cable wound around a spool that’s fitted with a hand crank. Cable augers are available in lengths up to 100 ft., though a 25-ft. model will suffice for almost any household clog. Depending on the piping configuration, the auger is inserted either into the plughole or directly into the drain and is cranked into it until it reaches the clog and dislodges it. Important: when using the auger try to avoid sharp movements, especially when retrieving it lest the pipe is damaged.
