THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DESIGN

the proper ones, not merely dictated by fashion tendencies. Form and texture have an effect on tactile perceptions. Furthermore, the emotional state can be governed with the help of these factors. For example, if your child is restless or you feel emotional, incorporate circular forms and soft textures in the interior. These will “calm” your unrestrained emotions. If, on the other hand, you find that you overthink and are inactive, incorporate sharp forms and rough surfaces in the interior. These will motivate you towards action. Our hearing perception is influenced by various sounds that structure our emotional state. In this case, it is important to not go overboard. If your door will open accompanied by music, you may sooner or later dislike this sound. It is better to make use of accessories that you can easily remove when you wish. For children, the sound that their toys make is very important. In this instance, you once again must not go overboard. Only one or two toys should make music – not all of them. If your child is surrounded by constant noise and squeaks, you will notice that your child and your brain are overloaded.

In the past, the focus in choosing an interior for you might have been “the most modern one” or “the interior containing the latest technologies.” However, today, the focus has shifted to considering the effect that the interior has on the person. As a matter of fact, having a well-planned interior increases productivity, uplifts the mood, develops internal talents, and even aids in raising children. The effect on the person is created by the forms, lines, colours, smells, textures, styles, and symbols used in the interior.

ALL ABOUT HOME

Now, let’s examine what specifically has a daily effect on our visual, tactile, sound, and sensory perceptions. Our visual interpretations are greatly affected by forms, colours, lines, and textures. These factors contribute to the development of consciousness, attention, and memory. It is great when the furniture in the interior is mobile; hence, you can easily make adjustments or completely change the arrangement in the interior. These mini innovations are vital for your psychological state. We often desire change; thus, altering the environment is an effective option to achieve new perspectives and visual impressions. For this purpose, the following is suitable: transformer-furniture, screens, chameleon wallpaper, etc. Symbols also have a hefty impact on the psychological state; therefore, ensure that the symbols you use are

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Smell is another factor that influences your emotional state through olfactory perception. In today’s world, there are various aroma options. We recommend, however, that you carefully approach your options. We suggest that you display your aroma sources in separate glasses that can be easily removed. Zoning plays a crucial role in the interior. Furthermore, it is suitable not only in studio-apartments, but in any room. This is especially important for the children’s room – an interior that combines a work space, rest zone, private space, and sleeping zone. Such zoning can prioritize order in the child’s mind. Do not forget that everyone is different! If your partner admires the smell of roses, you may find this odour the opposite of attractive. In addition, consider a consultation with a psychologist who will hint to you what is necessary in your interior to achieve efficient work and fulfilled rest.

An Unusual Wall Finish The three most common destinies for a wall are to be covered in wallpaper, plastered, or painted. Another option that is not as common is to cover the wall in decorative tiles, wood, panels, or stone. In addition, it is not unusual to encounter cement or brick walls in a modern interior. Without doubt, all of these options are practical and aesthetically pleasing. A truly unusual wall finish can become the element that will make the interior original and at the same time modern and stylish.

WALLS MADE OF FABRIC Much like wallpaper, fabric can become a suitable cover for walls. You will be able to create decorative folds and draperies with the fabric. Linen is a perfect option that imitates textiles with enriched texture. An interior that contains walls made of fabrics is generally very comfortable and cozy.

METAL WALLS Walls can be covered with metal tiles or a metal sheet. The metal can be smooth, textured, perforated, anodized, tinted, and even covered with decorative “rust.” In any case, the interior will be unique and expressive. In order to avoid the interior looking cold or resembling a factory, the metal should be combined with natural materials and warm colours. Natural wood, bricks, and elegant fabrics with folds neutralize the visual “coldness” of metal and outline its strictness. As a result, the interior will be stylish and modern while bringing comfort to the home.

STRETCH WALLS This type of wall is significantly different from a wall made of fabric. Essentially, a special material is attached to a frame, rather than to the wall itself. Behind this frame, you can hide wires. Moreover, it is easy to create areas for outlets with this type of wall. Stretch walls are becoming increasingly popular as they are able to create an unusual and beautiful interior.

4

In addition, you can depict any image you wish with the help of photo-printing and even add lighting to the wall.

GLASS WALLS The glass used for walls can be smooth or rough, transparent or opaque, and with paintings or photographs. The choices are endless and the results often go well beyond our greatest expectations. The glass is usually attached to the wall using special glue or it can be assembled several centimeters from the wall. This way, you can place objects behind the glass on the wall and present them in combination with lighting. In combination with textured glass, a 3D effect is achieved.

LIGHT-FILLED WALLS Panels made of various materials are attached to a special carcass and behind them is an assembly of lighting sources: lamps, neon tubes, and LEDs. The accomplished effect is a wall that is permeable to light.

LEATHER WALLS Despite the fact that you can find material imitating the skin of various animals and the effect of leather can be created with the help of decorative finishes, natural material is the most effective option for creating an exclusive interior. Leather is ecologically friendly, sound resistant, luxurious, and does not lose its aesthetic qualities. Leather destined for walls is usually presented in two forms: on a vinyl board or on a tile. Both options are unique and create an open field for imagination. You can choose leather of different textures, colours, and even a panel in the “Chester style. Creating an unusual wall is a difficult but very rewarding task!

A Fantasy World The mood, emotional state, and development of a child greatly depend on how his room is arranged – more specifically, what the child sees when he enters the room. This is something everyone can agree upon! More and more psychologists and child specialists are coming to the conclusion that a child’s development and psychological functions are dependent on the child’s surroundings. As such, they recommend using your artistic creativity to its fullest potential when organizing the child’s room. One of the major factors that create an optimal environment for your child is the design of the walls. It has to be done in a way that will ensure the child will feel comfortable and protected in his or her environment. Depictions of favourite cartoon characters or heroes of fairy tales contribute to your

child’s critical thinking process, imagination, and artistic or any other talents. The depictions on the walls can become ideas as a foundation for many games; the child can converse with the characters and create various storylines. In this manner, the child can safely express his fears and other negative emotions, create new scenarios, and come up with new plans of actions for situations that they have already experienced. Prior to engaging in the design, have a discussion with your child and listen to what they would like to see on their walls; perhaps particular scenes with favourite characters. It is best if the images can aid in a development of a plot that the child will create himself. Furthermore, consider allowing the child to draw any additional characters or details they would like to see. In this way, the child will be able to create a personal comfort zone in which he is the boss and decides what happens. As a result, the child will feel more confident when communicating with adults and other chil-

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

The colour scheme has an important role in the design of the walls. While the child is younger than three years or age, psychologists recommend using soft pastel colours; however, when the child reaches the age of four, you can bravely use brighter colours such as yellow, red, and blue. It is important for bright colours to be used correctly – creating a bright atmosphere. Feel free to incorporate orange and green shades in combination with yellow. The designs can be created with the use of different methods; for example, acryl is a modern and popular option for the interior’s aerographic. Unlike the brush technique, acryl is able to create complex images realistically in a short period of time. In addition, a range of other technologies can be used. Regardless of what technology is used, the main “technology” when decorating the children’s room always was, is, and will be a genuine love for children. Without this quality, not a single work will be successful. Children are very sensitive and are able to know when someone does not take their opinion seriously.

THE “GRANDMOTHER”

CHEST

A chest has many talents and using it to store items is not its sole purpose. You may be wondering: in what kind of interior is such an article of furniture suitable? Where should it be placed and how should it be used? Today, we will give you a chance to glance in the peephole and uncover its secrets.

For decorative purposes, it is best to choose models with thin threads or interesting designs. The most popular chests are those covered in leather, wooden chests, or those with a metal carcass with belts.

COFFEE TABLE

A CHEST IN THE LIVING ROOM

For some, it is not enough to decorate the interior with a chest. In this case, you may use it as a supplement to various articles of furniture, such as a coffee table. Such a decision will likely surprise your guests and highlight your creativity. The chest can become the key accent of the room; to achieve this, it must stand out from surrounding furniture due to its colour or material.

Today, items with a rich history are commonly used in the design of an interior. Some travel to pawn-shops in search of unusual furniture while others surf the worldwide web, choosing vintage items. The chance of encountering an old chest is quite high in these places. In the past, chests were used strictly for storing items. These can include family relics, hand-me-downs, weapons, icons, books, and anything else that was considered valuable. The chest is considered the forefather of closets, drawers, night tables, and the like. So then, what functions can it perform besides storing items?

NIGHT TABLE Quite an unusual option is to use the chest to accompany the bedside table. Besides the fact that this is an aesthetically pleasing option, it is also convenient. You can store items inside the chest and place your favourite books on top. It is important that the chest is not taller than the bed; otherwise, it will not be very comfortable to use.

AN ITEM OF DÉCOR In the modern world, there is no shortage of furniture. You can encounter closets,

BENCH In the bedroom, you can also make use of a large chest. It is able to perform the functions of a bench; if the lid is flat, you can comfortably sit on it. Inside, you can store bed sheets, covers, and pillows. Of course, this article is only suitable for spacious bedrooms. It is not recommended to place a massive chest in a rather small interior. drawers, and shelves in any interior. Designers view the chest as an interesting décor item that has the ability to bring a vintage aura to the interior. It will become suitable in a rustic or industrial style, although sometimes, it is found in Scandinavian apartments.

SOFA If you equip the chest with a comfortable seat and cover its surface in soft fabric, then you have created a sofa! It will be effective in the kitchen, lobby, or even living room in the rustic style. However, you should try to avoid using this option in classical interiors.

In this article, we will discuss the latest fashion trends in formulating the bathroom. To begin, let’s discuss the finish of the bathroom. In general, bright colours are always a suitable option. Of course, in such a design composition, white and beige will dominate. Dark colours will effectively cooperate with the dominant ones if used for the purpose of contrast which will enable the background tones to stand out. Furthermore, the hygiene of the bathroom surfaces will be emphasized. Once you have decided on the colours and materials that you want to use if the bathroom, it is time to move on to deciding on what objects you want to incorporate and how the new designed composition will look as a whole.

THE LATEST BATHROOM TRENDS – THE ABUNDANCE OF LIGHT AND STRICTNESS OF DESIGN

One of the objects that designers heavily focus on is the bathtub.

Suspended furniture and toilets will continue to be a popular option.

A unique feature of the modern bathtub is that it is often separate or built into a podium. This “construction” can take up the majority – or even the full length – of the wall.

The bathroom is the place in which you start your day every morning; a place of rest and relaxation. Therefore, the design must be not only fashionable, but also comfortable. I will gladly answer any of your questions and help you create your personal, unique bathroom.

The forms of the bathtub, sink, and toilet will be rectangular.

TABLE LAMPS For Task, Mood and Decor Every home requires an assortment of different lighting: ambient lighting for general illumination, accent lighting for highlighting a particular object, and task lighting to illuminate areas in the home that require direct light. Over the many years that I have been designing spaces for my clients and HGTV’s Income Property, I discovered that using table lamps is a cost efficient way to add dramatic visual aesthetic to any interior. When selecting a table lamp for a room, you need to consider a variety of questions. Is the furnishing heavy, delicate, or a mix? Is the furnishing modern or traditional? Are you looking for a table lamp that complements the decor or adds a decorative element to the space? One of the most jarring combinations is to incorporate the wrong shade on the table lamp – this will not be advantageous to the aesthetic of the room. Consider the scale; nothing looks worse than a small lamp with a huge shade or a large lamp with a tiny one. Select a shade that matches your lighting needs. Some lampshades are made from thick linen or woven material that diffuse the light, while others are more translucent and allow the most of the light to shine. For maximum output, choose a shade that is lighter in weight, translucent and white in color. In addition, some lamps will cast upward or downward beams to provide either mood or task lighting depending on the shade. One go-to lighting shop that offers a wide variety of lamps and shades is Royal Lighting on Avenue Road in Toronto. A designer tip: bring in your lamp base to let them guide you through selecting the perfect shade.

Also consider making it truly your own. At my firm, I often have added a custom unique shade to a basic lamp, creating a true statement piece for my clients. Remember that you do not necessarily need to use the shade that came with the lamp.

Mix and match lampshades and if necessary add a shade riser or extender to the top of the lamp hardware to raise the height of the shade. A narrow lamp with a small, silk, and boxed-pleat lampshade looks great in the bedroom or on a table. To create an ideal lamp for the living room, add a shade riser, a stretched, oval-shaped shade, and a longer frame. The bulbs you choose also play a key role in the type of lighting that will be created. Bulbs differ by the amount of light and color

they emit as well as the amount of energy they use. Check the maximum wattage on a table lamp. Wattage indicates how much power a bulb consumes, not the amount of light or lumens it generates. A 40-watt incandescent bulb generates 450 lumens; a 60-watt, 800 lumens; and a 100-watt bulb, 1600 lumens. Energy-efficient bulbs yield higher lumens with lower wattage. Twobulb table lamps are ideal for areas with

minimal light sources that require plug in lamps to illuminate the space. In all of my projects, I emphasize that illuminating a space is important; however, the objective of enhancing the room’s décor should not be forgotten. Table lamps are elegant objects of décor that create a brighter atmosphere regardless of where they are placed, whether it on a table or bedside.

If you have children that studied, are currently studying, or are planning to study at a university or college, the possibility of making a profitable use out of student rental has probably already come around your mind. All of this is known to me because three of my four children are currently at this age. When our children are choosing their university they dream to start a new and independent life of their own that is free of parental guidance. Most parents support this desire because they want their children to be self-sufficient individuals who can handle any situations in life starting from a younger age. At a first glance, the beginning of an independent life seems to have nothing but advantages to mental and spiritual development of your child. There is only one BUT …. and that is the financial aspect of this independence. During the first year of studies most of the universities offer on-campus housing. This is where our children make their first steps and discoveries of how to take care of themselves. This time is best to make new acquaintances and acquire new friends, which will offer mutual support in the future. Starting from the second year of studies, most of the students unite in groups of 4-8 people and rent a house outside of the university’s campus. Such rental is cheaper and can vary from $400 to $800 per person.

How to Make the Best out of your

STUDENT RENTAL The combination of rental fees, tuition, textbooks, transportation and food makes a large sum of money. Of course, you can get a loan from a bank or apply for OSAP, or perhaps you have insurance… but what if not?! How can you come up with funds to pay for your child’s education? The simple solution to this hard task is just around the corner – an investment in a house close to the university can solve all of these problems. To fully understand all of the expenses and revenues you might face, let’s take a close look at a real Student Rental that my friend/business partner Eugene and I have purchased in Hamilton in December of 2014. The price at which it was sold was $320,000 and we also spent another $50,000 for minor renovation and re-planning. It is also possible to find a house that is already properly planned and renovated; however, it is going to cost a little bit more ($400,000-$420,000). If in the first scenario we needed $135,000 in cash, then in the second one we need $100,000 (having the same mortgage conditions). I should mention that the initial amount varies greatly depending on your personal situation. Now let’s take a look at monthly expenses and revenues. The house that has eight rooms will gener-

ate $3,200 monthly (i.e. $425X8). Monthly expenses amount to $2,140; that includes mortgage, taxes, insurance, utilities, internet and property management. That means that our monthly profit adds up to $1,260. In your case, if you will get your child to one of the eight rooms in the house, your profit will decrease by the monthly payment for that room. On the other hand you can save on property management fees if your child will do those duties. The remaining profit of around $1,000-$1,200 can easily cover food and other expenses of your child and whatever is left can partially pay for tuition. After four years when you sell this house, you will not only get your initial investment back, but also the mortgage that you have paid ($15,000-$20,000). Furthermore, you will benefit from the rise in price. You can surely expect to double the initial investment and this will certainly be enough to pay off any loans remaining after graduation. I am sure that this article generated more questions than it gave answers. So to better understand crucial tenets of this industry such as: -How is it possible to earn up to 18,000$ a year with a purchase of only a single student house? -How to come up with funds to make this purchase -What is more profitable and easier to do – to buy a completed Student Rental or make it out of a Family Home? -What is the right strategy to navigate Student Rental? -How to secure a well-operating Student Rental and transfer it to a family member, in addition to paying all school debts in full

Son Kirill (student of Western University)

-How to secure this revenue for a lifetime, increase it and make it a perfect retirement plan.

Create Some Winter Warmth! by: Linda Mazur As a designer, I can say that a fireplace definitely has the potential to completely transform your interior! It is an interesting design element that creates a warm and cozy atmosphere regardless of where it is

placed. Today, the majority of newly constructed homes are being equipped with at least one fireplace – usually a gas unit. If your home does not have one, it is quite simple to attain. To ensure that your fireplace is a positive feature rather than an un-

complimentary or under-utilized element in the home, choosing the right design is essential. There is a vast range of fireplace designs so rest assured that you will find the right one for you. When making your choice, you will need to consider both the heating functionality of the fireplace and the overall aesthetic of the interior. When considering the design aspect of your new fireplace, decide on your style preference – whether it is the traditional style presenting the fireplace as an elegant and formal mantel or the rustic approach.

A beautiful rough-hewn reclaimed wooden beam in lieu of the traditional mantel with a touch of stone or tile is an impressive and appealing approach. Another option is the sleek fireplace. The most important factor is to ensure the fireplace is the right fit for your home. Next you will have to decide on the heating functionality of your fireplace. The trend has been favoring gas fireplaces as they are more affordable and easier to install into an existing build as compared to woodburning fireplaces. Furthermore, as they are not too expensive to operate, they can be a great help to your heating bills. These

fireplaces are energy-efficient and can even operate during a black-out! A gas fireplace can be installed virtually anywhere in your home and the room can be heated in minutes with the mere flick of a switch. Thus, this option is an easy, low maintenance alternative that provides the ambient beauty of the traditional wood-burning fireplace. A great one-stop retail location is Kastle Fireplaces where you will find diverse and inspirational styles and products. A personal favorite brand of mine is National Energy Equipement Inc , www.neefireplaces.ca. The wood-burning fireplace is a classical option; however, the installation process

is far more involved as it requires structural work and a masonry chimney which may not be a viable option for your home. If you reside in a condo or are unable to install a gas line, not all is lost! You too can easily enjoy the beauty and comfort that fireplaces bring to the winter season. Electric fireplaces have come a long way in the industry of design since first entering the market, and although they are not as energy efficient, they are definitely a great alternative. Modern electric fireplaces offer a realistic flame, the sound of fire crackling logs, and in some instances, the “smoke effect.

Welcome winter and create a warm and inviting atmosphere in your home with adding one of the many great fireplace options now available. - When decorating your mantel be impactful; layer your accessories and remember the importance of scale - Whether gas or wood-burning, remember annual cleaning and maintenance is crucial for safety and maximum efficiency

GLASS DOORS AND STAIRCASES – AN EXQUISITE SOLUTION If your home allows room for a staircase, then using a glass one is a wonderful option. Staircases tend to take up a sufficient amount of space and can visually constrict the interior. With a glass staircase, this will not be a concern! This type of staircase brings light to the interior and makes it seem visually larger. Unlike wooden staircases, glass ones do not squeak. Although wood is considered an ecologically-friendly material, it still has to be processed in order to be exploited. The wood undergoes chemical treatments from insects and is covered in a harmful polish, as well as substances that grant fire-resistant properties, and so on. In this sense, glass is much cleaner and durable. Therefore, it will be perfect for an interior with high levels of dampness. In addition, a glass staircase can be of any colour which allows the imagination of designers to run free. Even installing the staircase, along with the rails, can be efficiently played.

If you decide to make your interior unforgettable and outstanding, your best option is to incorporate glass doors and staircases. Not only will they fulfill their functional purposes, but they will also become an elegant object of dĂŠcor, bringing comfort and extravagancy to your home. The inventiveness and originality of designer ideas regarding glass constructions will satisfy the most exquisite and demanding needs of the customer.

safe in exploitation as they were created from tempered glass. Glass doors can be created in a variety of configurations: swing (with or without frame), pendulum (can open in both directions), and slide (allows conservation of space).

Glass doors and staircases are being used in interiors with growing frequency, despite the fact that they are quite expensive as compared to other materials. On the bright side, these doors and staircases will serve you loyally for a long time!

Glass doors are recommended for areas where light is insufficient. For example, consider a regular apartment in which the corridor will practically always be dark. However, if you install glass doors, the entire apartment will automatically brighten up. Furthermore, glass doors unite the interior as a single composition. They are absolutely

COMFORTABLE ACCESSORIES FROM THE TOURIST ARSENAL With every season, lovers of an active vacation add more and more equipment, specialized furniture, gadgets, and accessories to their arsenal. Portable tables, foldable chairs, bright fabrics, and practical forms and materials intended for picnic trips are all common accessories for the traveler. Designers continuously search for new ways intertwine these accessories into everyday life to increase comfort. A part of the designer’s ideas are revolved around hiking materials. For example, why would you need a sleeping bag in a city apartment? However, the Napsack sleeping bag can be used as a multifunctional blanket: it can replace a sweater, bed sheets, and allows free movement

around the house. This item is simply irreplaceable in cold weather. Especially on cold hiking trips, it can be used to its full potential. Imagine you need to change but the weather is unforgiving. Napsack

makes this possible in a comfortable and worthy manner! The collection of Stephanie Hornig “Camp” includes a collapsible multifunctional table, lamp, and a bed with a removable cover resembling a sleeping bag. This collection is easy to imagine in the dorm room of a student as it is easy to use, portable, and easy to wash. We can even attempt to describe the type of person likely to buy this accessory. He or she is like active, likes to travel, and values time. As such, this experiment

can be considered successful. The Camp collection will easily become the basis of an interior as it will easily cooperate with drawers, armchairs, and other attributes of the interior. The sofa-backpack is a creation due to the collaboration between Quinze and Milan with the famous Brandon Eastpak. Polyurethane foam covered with viscose material, durable, dirt-repellent, and very reliable – these are the qualities of the sofa-backpack. The numerous pockets not only harmonize furniture with the backpack, but also provide storage spaces for the traveler. Folding chairs are a necessary and effective solution for small interiors. They can be made from a variety of materials such as bamboo, cardboard, metal, and fabric. The folding chair of Christian Diesel takes up very little space when folded; however, when put to use it becomes a durable and comfortable article of furniture that you can confidently offer to guests. A tent in the interior is automatically associated with the children’s room. This object is

widely developed – designers recommend using a wide assortment of bright, multicoloured tents that will become a highlight of the child’s room. You can bravely incorporate a tent for your little archaeologist in which he can take on the role of studying the desert. As you can see, you can create different games for your child with the help of tents. Folding knives for all life situations, cups that function as thermoses, and flashlights all belong with stationary furniture and even duplicate their functions. Tourist accessories possess a certain aesthetic, not in terms of physical beauty but rather in terms of the beauty of their numerous functional abilities. If you are fond of this type of aesthetic, take a look at your travelling photos. Perhaps incorporating these kinds of accessories is what is missing from the grand picture. Perhaps you need to acquire these to fully express the preferences of the home owner.
