The gentle, mysterious, and visually appealing pearl has always been an asset in the interior – creating a fine sense of luxury and attracting the gaze of visitors. This article is dedicated to this exquisite material and how to effectively incorporate it or its imitation in the interior.
T he Mystical Pearl
The pearl can be considered one of the first “decorative” materials of a natural origin. Even if used in a modern interior, the pearl will be able to create a specific celebratory atmosphere much like a pearl necklace makes a strict outfit seem more feminine. Today, the pearl appears in a large variety of colours besides its natural tone. In fact,
the shades can be unusually bright and extravagant. This enables us to incorporate the pearl in just about any interior.
INCORPORATING THE PEARL IN THE INTERIOR When it comes to ways of incorporating the pearl in the interior, the options are endless. One of the more grand options is to create a pearl wall. Just imagine how luxurious a wall or a segment of it will look like if made of pearl! The floors can also be made of pearl, however, in combination with tiles. Although in this case, you will require the services of a professional. Furthermore, the pearl is commonly used to cover the façade of furniture. A “pearl” table or sink will look very effective and luxurious.
WHERE WILL THE PEARL BE MOST SUITABLE? The answer to this question is the bathroom. As mentioned above, a pearl sink looks very original and beautiful. To add more pearl to the interior design, you can also incorporate it in the mirror frame. A living room in the Mediterranean, Indian, Colonial, or Classical style will make great use of pearl mosaic wall decorations. The design of the bedroom will also benefit from the addition of pearl accessories such as a chest, photo frames, lamp shades, and various pearl sculptures. As you can see, the pearl will be functional in any interior.

CRACKED MEANS GREAT! Soft pastel shades, vintage linen, cotton, and furniture layered with paint which are noticeable through worn out areas are the main ingredients of a cocktail dubbed “Shabby chic.” The term “shabby chic” can be interpreted as “worn elegance”. An American magazine, The World of Interiors (ITALISIZE), first introduced this term back in the 1980s. Historical roots of this style, however, come from spacious country houses of Old England, with their humble and cozy interiors with chintz sofas, antique paintings on the walls, and roses decorating the gardens. Over decades, this lasses-faire lifestyle was enriched by elements of French chateau, Tuscan villas, and Mediterranean Greek houses. When decorating the interior in the shabby chic style it is important to create a relaxed and carefree atmosphere, which can be achieved with vintage or artificially aged furniture, natural fabrics and many memorable tiny objects that are dear to one’s heart. Shabby chic is more of a style than fashion and it is even encouraged to mix décor styles from different ages to achieve a desired effect. Shabby chic breathes new life into old things, accepting them as they are and making them stylish again. Shabby chic is a romantic and feminine style, where it is accepted to have laced pillows, porcelain with roses, cupid statues, and marble caskets. Even when fitted with many small romantic items, shabby chic interiors are full of lightness and air. Designers learned to combine modern items like chrome kitchen appliances with antique looking shelves and cupboards. Quite often it seems that adding an antique table or armchair to a minimalist interior is
counterintuitive, but such items bring character to the room and give it a hint of nostalgia. To recreate such an atmosphere in your home, you can combine modern lighting with old wooden furniture or rough wall plaster.
FURNITURE AND LIGHT Whether it is a simple wooden table or vintage cupboard, the main characteristic is the worn-out look with small cracks and wood showing though multiple layers of paint. When furnishing a home in shabby chic, an accent should be placed on making the place comfortable and relaxing. Armchairs and sofas should be abundantly available to embrace tired visitors in soft comfort at a moment’s notice. Vintage chandeliers will tastefully light your home.
COMMERCIAL ONLY: BUY, SELL OR RENT YOUR BUSINESS Automotive FINCH&DUFFERIN

COLOUR PALETTE Shabby chic is rich in neutral and pastel tones. Some of the popular colors include milk-white, off-white, light blue, and light pink. Walls in the shabby chic style can be covered with planks, colourful wallpaper, or factory plaster. Floors are usually wooden, even in the kitchen. Fabrics that are often used in the shabby chic style are always in neutral tones, but can be made of cotton, unbleached linen, and chintz. The shabby chic style is so broad that it allows the designer to experiment, fantasize, and demonstrate individualism in elegancy.

THE PROS AND CONS OF A HEATED FLOOR A heated floor has long been a common topic for discussion in the world of interior design. Perhaps you have even chosen one that you wish to have. However, let’s take a moment to consider both pros and cons of such an option. PROS: The most noticeable advantage is saving on the heating of the home (by about
30%). In short: the higher the temperature in the home, the less heat is required. An important criterion is the overall temperature in the home. It can be quite low but you might not even notice – your feet will feel warmth! Warm air tends to rise, but unfortunately we do not have the ability to fly in order to reach it. In this case, having a heated floor creates harmony. The air temperature will be relatively balanced throughout the interior. The air rises and thereby prevents gushes of air from forming. Is this not an advantage?
A heated floor can become a personal heaven for your children, especially if they are young. Children love to explore every corner of the room to satisfy their curiosity. Doing this on a warm floor is much more pleasant and safe. Your young one will not get sick.
CONS: Heated floors are quite expensive – both the purchase and installation. The money will be returned due to future energy savings; however, sometimes there is no opportunity to afford such an investment. It is difficult to install; the floors will have to be raised by a few centimeters. This process is not always practical for people, especially with other renovations going on. A heated floor is not suitable for all floor materials. In addition, if you have a carpet, the heated floor loses its purpose. Lastly, a heated floor is difficult to fix or renovate. Do not conserve when installing and carefully follow all of the instructions. It is best to assign this process to a professional as to avoid any problems.

HOW TO ARRANGE A ROOM FOR THE ELDERLY
In many magazines, including ours, you can read about how to arrange the children’s room or a bedroom for two. However, you rarely come across material addressing how to properly equip a room for an elderly person. In this article, we aim to change this and tell you about a selection of the most important tips from specialists. THE LOCATION OF THE ROOM
Rooms in the attic or upper floors allow a beautiful view from the window; however, a room on the first floor would be best for an elderly person. Moreover, the pathway to the room should not have any obstacles such as high steps or slippery floors. It is best to cover linoleum and tiles with a non-

slippery path in order to prevent potential injuries. If necessary, equip the hallway and walls leading to the room with handrails. The interior will not suffer from this addition. Furthermore, it would be beneficial to equip the hallway, room, and bathroom with motion lights – this will make it easier to move around the home for your elderly loved one and yourself.
THE AESTHETIC ASPECT
COMFORT COMES FIRST When arranging a room for an elderly person, it is important to not only think about aesthetics, but also of comfort. Try to organize the interior in a way that maximizes comfort. For instance, the drawers should not be taller than a person and easily reached. Keep in mind that it is not very easy for an elderly person to bend or stand on a chair to reach for objects. The bed should also not be very high. An orthopaedic mattress would be a good addition but ensure to consult the opin-

ion of your doctor first. It is a good idea to place dim lighting near the bed that can be turned on with a simple motion of the hand. Ideally, the brightness of the lights should be adjustable with the help of a dimmer. Furthermore, if you install electric blinds with a control remote, that will only be beneficial.
The elderly require peace and appeasement; however, when arranging a room for them many people incorrectly associate calmness with a bland and boring interior. Use a soft but engaging colour scheme. Pastel tones of sky blue, yellow, pink, mint green, and coral will work well. Do not hesitate to decorate the room with bright paintings and pictures. In addition, consider incorporating flowers in vases or pots, fountains, or a fish aquarium. It has been proven that they have a positive impact on a person’s psychological state.

Living in Color HOW TO CHOOSE A COLOUR SCHEME AND BUILD
an insanely beautiful look together blindfolded). Here’s a rule for you: decorate from dark to light as you go vertically. Dark floors, medium walls, pale ceiling. Isn’t that what Mother Nature does? Here’s another rule for you “number” people: 60-30-10. 60 percent of the house is the main or dominant colour (say, blue walls). 30 percent is the secondary colour, which provides contrast and interest (say, purple upholstery) and then you have got the 10 percent accent piece, which would be your magenta cushions, throws, vases, and so on. It’s an easy rule to remember – just think of your meals. The way we like ‘em around here is 60 percent potatoes, 30 percent meat, and then 10 percent candy or chocolate.
If we can take any lessons from The Wizard of Oz other than the Judy Garland tragedy and the fact that tin is highly susceptible to rust, it is that life simply must be lived in colour. There is no two ways about it: colour makes life worth living. After all, the human eye was made to see things in beautiful, bright, bold, vivacious, and stimulating colour. Don’t worry, rule-lovers: we are not suggesting complete colour anarchy. You do not even have to colour outside the lines. Adding colour can be formulaic if you want (because let’s face it, we aren’t all interior design experts who know how to throw
Look at the biggest pattern you have got in your living room, choose three colours from it for our 60-30-10 rule, and select accessories accordingly. Now we’re cooking with gas. Anyone can do that. And it just works.
ADDING COLOUR TO YOUR SANCTUARY: THE BEDROOM Here’s how to choose and use your colours in the bedroom: l Opt for analogous colours – those that are beside each other on the colour wheel, like blue and violet. This gives the bedroom a casual and restful feel. l Balance the room. Avoid having pale colours all clustered around each other (like white duvet, white side tables and white lamps) and then a big black armoire at the other end of the room; a mix of light and dark colours throughout will create the flow and harmony you crave. l You can still have your white duvet if you must, but contrast whites with gray to avoid a stark, hospital-bed type look. Then, add props of your favourite colour in the form of custom pillows and accessories. The takeaway: live bold, live bright, live life in colour……..LIVE

The Sink as an Element of Design Amongst plumbing appliances, there are elements that can serve as an accessory of the interior on their own. Standard and ordinary models are starting to seem dull and a lack of variety becomes aggravating – the customer demands an exclusive, stylish, and extraordinary interior. In response, the designer’s ideas do not stay in one place. Creative and modern accessories continuously make an appearance on the market. Sinks are no exception. The leading firms, as well as those less known, are competing for the appeal of the customer by creating the most appealing sinks out of glass, wood, copper, marble or other natural stone. As a result, a variety of sinks are available to satisfy the experimental curiosity of the customer.

Without a doubt, custom-made stylish sinks are able to satisfy the owner and astonish guests. Designer sinks are a one-of-a-kind accessory that you will likely not see anywhere else. The designer’s imagination tends to have no limits when it comes to designing sinks. The results can be surprising and you will need several hints to identify a decorative sink. A popular sink design is that of a broken water droplet – quite an unusual form. In fact, unusual forms have been increasingly popular in the design of sinks. Often, they are so unusual that it is difficult to describe their appearance. Besides there being a variety of options in terms of colours, there are also endless options of what images or designs to put on the sink. Whether it is a painting or abstract art, such a decorative technique is an effective and original way to present house-

hold appliances. Even a small detail such as a mesh for drainage did not escape the attention of designers. For instance, one designer made it in the form of an ornament or depicting an image. Special attention is given to sinks for the children’s room – they differ by their smaller size, depth, and decorations of movie characters or favourite scenes. Such an appliance will effectively train your child to regularly wash their hands and keep clean. Custom minisinks are specially made for small interiors or bathrooms. There is even a different selection of sinks designated for the cottage. This way, the small cottage on the outskirts has become a residence amongst beautiful accessories. Do you want to stand out? Do you want to have a bathroom unlike any other? It has never been simpler. Today’s vast selection of exclusive and untraditional plumbing appliances will be able to satisfy any taste.

SECRETS OF FAST SALES: Pros and Cons of Pre-Sale Repairs Hello, I’m Natalia Slobidker! I am a professional full-time realtor. I specialize in real estate pre-sale preparation, sales strategy development and keeping real estate transaction risks at a minimum. My mission: minimum stress – maximum benefit, in any real estate transaction. Today, my article addresses those who are battling conflicting opinions – whether or not to repair their property before selling it, whether it pays off, and whether it is worth the time and effort. In most cases, the answer to this question is “yes,” but it is still somewhat of a problem that has many unknowns and the final answer depends on what obstacles each unknown presents. Despite this, I will be giving some general recommendations which will likely be beneficial to owners of the average property for their particular area. An experienced realtor can tell you what features are considered standard for a specific price range in a specific area. If for some reason your house does not have these features, it is likely that you will need to add them. It is very important to decide what level of repair your home needs. If your home is more than 20 years old and has never been repaired, then, depending on its price range, it can either get stuck on the market for a long time or else you will have to lower your expectations. However, usually the situation is one where in some corner of the house some repairs were done but the overall impression remains unaffected. How so? Well, “the devil is in the details”. Invisible to the eye, they alert our brain: “the house is old and in poor condition; it requires repair” or, conversely, “entering this house, I can immediately start living, not haven broken a sweat.” Meanwhile, the paradox lies in that the first house may be repaired much

more extensively than the second despite the exact opposite impression.
After renovating:
Not to be unfounded, I offer an example from recent practice. I was called to a house approximately 30 years old, the owners of which had invested more than a grand in upgrades and improvements, but for some reason the house was not being sold for the desired amount. The first thing I noticed upon entering the house was that it was home to positive and cheerful people and had a joyful atmosphere. This is great for daily life, but it may have an undesirable effect on the sale. Entering the kitchen, I found a rich orange color; in contrast to such a background, the kitchen looked old and yellowed. This impression was reinforced by really old appliances and worktops. That is, the owners were not satisfied with the kitchen cabinets, so they changed them and added new ones. As a result, the kitchen had become more functional. Naturally, when it was time to sell, they had expected to sell the house as renovated and improved. Unfortunately, the kitchen still looks old in the eyes of a potential buyer. To solve this problem, all I had to do is pick a new colour for the walls so that it flattered the kitchen, change the countertop and appliances, and change the handles to something more interesting. Et voilà: the kitchen has gained an improved look, now matching its functional state. Here are photos of the kitchen – judge for yourself.
The rest of the stone slab was used to replace the countertops in the bathroom; coupled with a repainting of the wall, this produced the same effect as in the kitchen. Here is the bathroom before renovation:

I will continue the topic of pre-sale repairs and other aspects affecting your property prices in the next issue. If you do not want to or cannot wait, have questions to which you would like to get some utmost honest answers, want to evaluate your property, or begin your search for a new one, please call me and I will gladly help you out! It was also necessary to abandon the bright colors in the bedrooms –since these emphasized their residents’ individuality – in favour of a more neutral palette acceptable to the majority. Before:
I was not able to resist committing a little designer hooliganism – we left a trace of the original color on one of the walls. As a signature: “we were here.” Thanks to correct proportions and presentation, the room simply became more interesting. If you are unsure that you can determine these proportions, either entrust them to professionals or else forego them altogether. The average ROI (return on investment) of renovations and subsequent redecoration ranges from 200-700%. Sometimes a simple permutation combined with a modified wall or floor colour can transform your property beyond recognition.

HOW TO START ENJOYING YOUR LIFE At some point throughout our lives we may come to the conclusion that life is beginning to lose its meaning. Our job takes away at least 8 hours from the day and other responsibilities leave us little to no time for our personal hobbies and interests. Although we might have a break during work hours, not many people have the opportunity to use that time to visit the gym, play a favorite sport, or visit a museum. Considering that we spend approximately 8 hours sleeping, we are left with only 8 hours of “free” time. Of that time, we spend 1.5-3 hours driving to and from work. An hour or two is dedicated to caring for our bodies and eating – this does not encompass a five course meal but rather finding a few minutes for a brief sandwich break. Now we are left with 3-4 hours of free time. We can do anything with this time; for example, we can take our youngest daughter to her piano or gymnastics class. While she is there, we can drive our elder son to hockey practice. Next, we have to buy food for our dog but we are running out of gas so the gas station comes first. By this time, we are no doubt hungry so we drop by a pizza or shawarma place since it’s a convenient togo option. Once we are home, we need to help our youngest son with his homework, prepare his lunch for the next day, and pack his backpack. We have not yet walked the dog but it time to go sleep. However, we did not get a chance to call our parents to hear about their day, decide what to get our best friend for their birthday, or choose a Halloween costume. It is already midnight and the alarm will sound at seven but we still did not watch the new movie everyone is talking about. We can catch up on some sleep on the weekend because we can afford to wake up at eight (our kid’s class begins at 9:30 and there is not much

traffic). Likely, you can relate to this busy and fast-paced lifestyle. Fortunately, we are living in the most tech-advanced times. We save time by pressing computer and cellphone buttons; we can easily reply to e-mails, like a page on Facebook, or sneak a tweet on Twitter during our work hours. Our salary is not bad; some of us have a considerable income. Moreover, if both spouses in our household work we can afford a new 3500 sq. ft. house in a prestigious neighborhood, as well as a new Lexus or Mercedes (or even Porsche or Tesla). We can get the best skis, power kite, snowmobile, sea-doo or even a yacht. We might even afford a vacation trip to Miami where we can spend a week or two on a beach or we can gather old friends and go windsurfing. Perhaps, we can get those skis and fly to the Alps to spend 10 days on one of the best slopes in the world, and on our way back stop in Paris for 3-4 days to go shopping for new clothes. We can think about spending the next New Year in Hawaii, or celebrating our anniversary with our spouse in Las Vegas and our kids’ birthdays in Disney Land, or making an 80day long journey around the world…. Wow! What a life! This is a “YES” life, but there is one “NO”: where do we get TIME for all of that? Can we stop working? But to stop working means to say good-bye to our decent salary, to our prestigious home, to skis, flights to Paris, etc. No, we cannot do this now when we just have tasted the good life. We are too old to leave something for later (if “later” will ever come). There is only one way out of this situation: to get rich. John D. Rockefeller once said: “The path to great wealth – a passive income that comes regardless of your efforts. Create a source of passive income – and enjoy life!” One of the most reliable sources of passive income is through long-term investments

market now that are designed to pop open and allow your home to breathe better.
Maximum light in the home is the goal of many people. Not only does this enhance the aesthetics of your space, but it also makes you feel better to see the great morning sunshine. However, we all have those areas of our home – the space over our staircase or a bathroom perhaps – where light struggles to reach. If this is the situation you are encountering, then consider adding a skylight to these darker areas of your home to let the sunshine in.
As a designer, one company that I turn to for all of the skylights and solar tubes we install is Velux Canada. Velux manufactures quality products and are at the forefront of the industry with great designs and technology.
Skylights, or solar tubes if you lack the space, are a wonderful way to increase the brightness and even the health of your home. It allows you to introduce more natural light into a room and helps your home to ventilate and “breathe” better. Windows are designed to circulate air throughout a room; however hot air rises and with it any toxins or pollutants. There are many skylights on the
Plan well and be aware of the finished outcome of installing a skylight or solar tube. You need to remember that a skylight is not a window, though some often think the two are interchangeable. A window is designed to catch the low-angled rays of the sun in the winter and limits the glare of the high-angled sun in the summer. On the other hand, a skylight tends to do the opposite so consider this factor when deciding on the location.

In order to maximize the benefits and design feature of a skylight in your home, you need to remember a few key points when deciding the best place to install one…or two…

for you all day, whereas one situated on a sloping roof facing south can have a tendency to overheat rooms. Also remember that any furniture, flooring or fabrics may become sun bleached from constant direct sunlight. To regulate this you may want to consider a skylight that has a built-in blind to preserve your finishes.
3
Select appropriately for your space to maximize the aesthetics. Just as a large skylight in a very small bathroom can look out of place, so will a single small skylight on a vast sloping ceiling in a large family room or kitchen. Skylights come in varying sizes; therefore, if you have a large ceiling you may want to consider adding more than one skylight for visual appeal. However, for more confined spaces the solar tube should be considered as an option.
In the end, regardless of what you decide I am sure we can agree that skylights are a wonderful design feature for many spaces. They add an architectural element to your room while creating a more airy feeling as the ceiling no longer appears as an uninteresting solid block. So create a warm and cheery atmosphere for yourself and consider the addition of a skylight as part of your next home renovation!

archeological discoveries made in Greece found this print used in wall paintings and ceramic jars.
CHEVRON IN INTERIOR DESIGN Modern chevron design has great variety: a combination of various V shapes – monochrome zigzags, and multicolor waves, among many others. It has many uses as well, including upholstery, decorative accessories, wallpaper, tiles, and carpets.
CHEVRON DESIGN FEATURES Chevron print looks very stylish and showy, often making the room more interesting, lively, and dynamic.
MODERN CHEVRON
PRINT IN INTERIOR DESIGN Certain prints and patterns gain popularity in interior design thanks to their use in architecture, fine arts, and particularly the fashion world. The latter imposes great influence on our daily life, surrounding objects and surfaces because precisely during fashion shows of famous designers true fashion trends are born.

One of such fashion trends has been for decades an original print called “Chevron”. From Old French chevron means rafter, from meeting of rafters at an angle, joined at the ends and forming a Latin letter V. Chevron print became widely popular and has been used from the middle of last century to this day, mainly thanks to the famous brand of elite clothing, Missoni, which made this print a hallmark of its numerous design collections. However, chevron has been around for much longer:

Hence, if you are yearning for a change in your life, which like a breath of fresh air can help you reset and become more productive, try using vibrant and bold zigzag print: If the interior has neutral colour palette, chevron print can be used to accentuate the room – in a form of a carpet, drapes, or original tiles. Chevron print works well with monochrome floral patterns: chevron upholstery of a chair or a sofa looks well with floral pillows. Any room is guaranteed to look stylish with chevron wallpaper on one of the walls – an excellent background for decorative accessories with a gold or silver polish. In the kitchen, a backsplash decorated in chevron can add character to the most boring cabinet. In the children’s room, chevron can do well to replace the usual naïve wall and ceiling paintings, although it is better not to experiment too much with bright colours.

A wall with paint or wallpaper is becoming a boring and mundane look; at least that is the opinion of modern designers. They continue to develop new and interesting types of coatings. In this article, you will find a collection of five innovative and unusual materials that, according to specialists, will reach the peak of popularity this year.
5 ORIGINAL WALL COATINGS POPULAR IN 2016
CEMENT PANELS OF A NEW GENERATION With the loft style becoming increasingly popular in modern interiors, materials such as cement, leather, and metal have also gained a liking. British designers could not walk by one such material – their attention was captivated by cement. They decided to use this material to create a three dimensional geometric tile which is able to visually change the interior; thereby making it original and interesting. Designers play not only with the form, but also with the colour and even texture of the cement. For instance, the surface can be made smooth and glossy.
A VOLUMETRIC MODULAR TILE WITH AN UNUSUAL EFFECT The Italian designer Cristina Vezzini created an original modular tile that will be suitable
for an interior of any size. For example, in a small interior, it will add more depth and will fill the room with air. When creating this material, Cristina was inspired by the beauty of mountain ranges, their texture, and slightly rude character.
TEXTURIZED LEATHER PANELS This year, the most popular materials tend to be those that make you want to always look at them and touch them. Leather is a prime example of such a material. The Italian brand Lapelle creates panels that can be used as coating for the walls and floors alike. They are pleasant to the touch and make the interior stylish and modern. Without a doubt, they will be effective in the interior of an office or bedroom. Moreover, they will be suitable in a loft interior or an apartment.

LUXURIOUS CARVED MARBLE Marble has always been in style, now more so than ever. This material inspires not only the crafters of furniture and coating materials, but even nail designers. Specialists of the Italian brand Lithos Design noted this tendency and decided to create stylish carved panels from multi-coloured marble. The uniqueness of such a coating is that the marble is carved into various designs which are filled with decorative gold. This type of coating looks original and presentable.
A CAPTIVATING STONE DÉCOR In 2016, designers cherish the beauty of textured materials. These include the carved works of natural stone tiles. Designers from Lithos Design are amazed by the beauty of natural materials and consider their duty to transform them into masterpieces in the interior. An interesting use for stone in the interior is to make it embroidery on marble. This was suggested by the Italian designer Enzo Berti. His work is definitely worth attention!
