TOP-OF-THE-LINE WALLS decorative effect designers use various fabrics, with sometimes-unbelievable textures or patterns. More often than not fabric is used for inserts in combination with other materials. Use of tapestries in the centre of a wood panel in royal palaces around the world has always been a source of inspiration to today’s interior designers.

TECHNO Some of the most creative designers like the idea of steel or other kinds of metal on the walls.

DECORATIVE PAINTING Professionally executed paintings on walls look unique and luxurious.

T

he texture of wall covering is more important than their colour – this is the opinion of many designers who work to achieve an upscale look of a house or apartment. Smooth steel and cool glass, soft fabric, or rough plaster – all of this can find its place in both classic and extravagant interior designs. There are unlimited possibilities of wall textures, which enable any design fantasy to become a reality.

WALL PANELS From ancient Egypt and Rome, through the Middle Ages and up to this moment, wall panels have always been one of the favourite choices, attractive by its decorative and whimsical look. They provide unlimited choices for decorators for implementing their boldest ideas. Details vary depending on the material selected.

VENETIAN PLASTER Non-standard wall coverings may serve to underscore majestic and stylish features of the decor. Venetian plaster is an elegant and not too standard way of wall decoration. The technique of applying this kind of covering is rather complicated but the result is quite impressive. This covering consists of fine-dispersed natural mineral particles of marble and

plaster of Paris combined with lime and water. The application is done in three layers where the top one is the decorative one having an effect of pearly shimmer. Brush strokes are thoroughly evened out. The colour scale of the Venetian plaster has up to thirty five shades.

LEATHER Easily found on the home decorating market are prefabricated wall panels with all kinds of leather trim, from noble solid colour to hot animal print. Of course, upscale decor demands only natural materials. In the extreme case, you can cover your complete walls in leather but it is more common to use leather inserts.

WOOD This is a classic. Such panels can be either austere or fanciful depending on the kind of wood. The variety of wood suitable for wall panels includes expensive types such as satin wood, eucalyptus, and black wood but the type of finishing is equally important. Whether the panel is painted or lacquered, what kind of decorative painting or antiquating is used – all this defines its look and texture.

FABRIC Fabric is one of the oldest and richest types of wall covering. To achieve a desired

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

ENCAUSTIC This technique uses beeswax-based pigments applied while in their liquid form. These paints have vivid rich tones.

RELIEF DECORATIVE PAINTING It is more complicated in execution than encaustic and consists of several layers. Relief wall covering made with this method shimmers in electrical light and gives the wall a very expressive look.

NATURAL STONE AND AGGLOMERATE Large rooms are the most suitable places to use stone on the walls. In open concept interiors, stone may serve for defining spaces of different functions. Active patterns in marble or granite attract attention and create multilayered colour space. Agglomerate is the product of modern technologies based on natural quartz and marble with their best qualities enhanced. Agglomerate is a popular product for wall covering due to its durability, water and fire resistance, and convenience in installation and use. When creating decor in your home you strive for a harmonious result where spectacular decor is combined with comfort. The best way to achieve this purpose is to turn to qualified professionals to ensure the highest quality of renovations and decorations.

SPIRIT OF THE OLD

A

ntiques are more than just art and objects; they are history of the people and the times. They are a strong energy of the past which explains why some people purchase antiques with the specific intent of receiving an energy charge over the other purposes such as a way of enhancing the home, a good investment, or an expensive but profitable hobby. Due to their uniqueness, exclusivity, individuality, and hand-made quality rather than mass production, antiques exude warmth and give their owners the feeling of being part of something special. Even visiting antique markets, auctions, and shows creates an aura of magic and a feeling that the item we selected mutually selected us in return.

Be very thorough in choosing antique items for your decor. The most important criterion is the feeling of the inner connection. It is not easy to trace the object’s provenance; often we only know fragments of its history. Therefore, trust your intuition to find out

CASUAL ELEGANCE

W

hen we are talking about casual interior decoration style, we think of comfort, freedom of choice, and coziness. To decorate your room in this style, use soft natural fabrics. Other characteristics of the style are straight lines, minimal glitter, predominance of pastel shades, and eclectic mix of details - for instance, wrought iron combined with old-time flee market finds, handmade items and vintage objects, ceramic and glass accessories, and so on. What is the most important are taste, balance, common sense and modesty. This does not diminish the esthetic value of the decor and, on the contrary, very often creates a stronger effect.

UNIQUE DECOR Every customer who wants a modern decor expects the designer to add a unique dimension to their homes. Nevertheless,

6

ALL ABOUT HOME

uniqueness needs to be balanced because your home is the place where you spend most of your free time and receive friends and family. You want your surroundings to be conductive of friendly communication and pleasant mood. Unlike our grandparents used to do, we do not tend to hoard. When we need something, we just go out and buy the thing we need, be it a newly made item or an old one. Not many prefer heavy furniture sets now – most people buy pieces separately, and this does create a foundation for the casual style. Try to generate casual ambience in your living room by placing a vintage coffee table over an animal skin or ethnic rug, display an old basket, and see how perfect this combination is! This is your casual decor that was created within a very short time. You can use this principle to decorate any place in your home. Lighting for casual interiors is unassuming.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Spot lights in wood or brass holders add additional volume to the space.

ROMANTIC BEDROOM The bed has always been the queen of the bedroom, so keep it the central point of your decor. For your casual look choose an oak shaker bed or, if you prefer, a wrought iron bed with whimsical curly details. Hang draped and flounced fabrics over the bed. Light curtains hung on decorated rods create a special atmosphere. Add candles in candleholders, photo frames and any other element that will make the room feel cozy. Try to use old trunks or suitcases to keep your possessions.

PRACTICAL ADVICE If you are not sure of your own ability to create a casual yet harmonious decor hire a professional designer.

THE COLOUR OF BRICK

A

s with many other things, we in North America may expect yet another European innovation to soon find its way to North American to our markets. What we are currently talking about is the new brick. Brick used to be a serious building material up to the middle of the 20th century. Only later the brick became much thinner because it was mostly being used for the exterior finishing of houses. In Europe, houses are still built from the full-blown brick but red brick buildings have lately become, in the minds of consumers, tedious and commonplace. European manufacturers realize that their customers want something new, and they have introduced bricks of various colours – from the lightest to the utmost dark tones. A building made of coloured brick looks like a gingerbread house but choose a moderately bright colour and matching decor around the house – and the look will be elegant and trendy. A coloured brick is made the same way as a regular ceramic or silicone brick but with added pigments. It has the same insulating qualities and durability as a regular brick but looks much more interesting. As of today, the colour brick comes in 50 different shades, so the consumer can choose whatever best suits his decor ideas. The coloured brick, despite being a newcomer on the construction market, has become extremely popular. Looks like many Europeans prefer coming home after a long day of work to a cheerful and bright place, be it pink, green, or magenta. North American consumers surely will not be far behind.

CHOOSE YOUR FLOOR WISELY

T

he colour of your floor plays an extremely important role in the general scheme of your decor. The floor is the element that loses its looks first because it has to withstand a tremendous workload, with people walking on it all the time. Therefore, the floor needs to not only be aesthetically pleasing but durable as well. The best colour for the floor is a neutral colour. There is no need to draw attention to a floor, especially if you are planning to decorate your home with beautiful furniture and other objects. The floor has to serve as background for your decor, not as its element. Nevertheless, a floor in an upscale material makes the room look more sophisticated.

10

ALL ABOUT HOME

Granite and other natural stone floors look great but are very expensive. In a large room a floor made of large-scale tiles will look spectacular. The tiles should be neutral in colour. The ideal and always stylish colour is the colour of brick. For a wooden floor the best colour is the that of dark honey. The older the wood looks the showier the floor is. Yet, for a bathroom white tiles are the best. If you prefer your floors covered with rugs or use wall-to-wall carpeting, they should also be in neutral colours. This is especially true for expensive carpets and rugs because neutral colours guarantee that the item will always stay trendy.

COMMOTION IN THE SHEETS

F

ashion that dictates all the trends in both clothing and interior design has not passed over the area of bed linen. Bed linen fashion was born in Italy. The Renaissance not only gave the world famous artworks but supreme work of seamstresses as well. Up to the end of the 18th century fashion dictated that bed linen, table linen, towels, and napkins should be white.

embroidery. Linens of those times became thinner and more refined. Bed sets and table sets always carried the name of their owner in the shape of a monogram or a crest. A bed would be made with at least three sheets and six pillows. The queen from the famous fairytale The Princess and the Pea by Hans Christian Andersen, piling many pillows and featherbeds on the princess’ bed was just following a trend of the times.

White linen was affordable only to the rich and famous and was considered luxurious. Only the 19th century made white linen affordable to the middle class.

The sexual revolution of the 1960s brought in a trend of the rich and, sometimes, even naughty look for the bedroom. Bed sets started coming in most uncustomary colours including carmine red, emerald, purple, or even black. These tones brought with them fabrics of different characteristics – for example, smooth and sexy satin. At about the same time, within the country-style trend, small flora and chintz were introduced.

Woven decorations used to be all the rage – for example, Dutch masters of the 16th century might have weaved into the item not only the name of their customer but their own name as well, together with the name of their town and even a verse dedicated to the event in honour of which the tablecloth was created. A new trend in the 18th century was decorating bed and table linen with lacy rococo

ALL ABOUT HOME

Bed linen trends change almost as frequently as fashion trends but we do not follow these changes because a family usually

uses good quality linen for more than a year or two. Therefore we do not renew our bed linen stock as often. Nevertheless, such patterns as flowers and stripes we have gotten accustomed to in our bed linen are slowly but surely becoming a thing of the past. Designers introduce new textile collections in the lines of the latest trends every year. Periods and countries bring in their own changes into the esthetics of bed attire. Who could have invented a fitted sheet but the Americans who value their comfort and progress above traditions? Americans also tried to introduce disposable bed linen but the idea had flopped. At any place – on a train, in a hotel, or even a hostel, even if you are staying just for the night, linen on your bed will be fabric. Should you happen to be an overnight guest at Karl Lagerfeld’s, you may find yourself on a sheet made of natural fur. The fashion guru has repeatedly mentioned his passion for furs: “You can find unusual fur items in my house, including mink pillows or sable blankets,” he says. “My personal favourite is an ermine throw.”

hat is a trend? It is the meeting point of an offer and a demand; manifestation of something that has unlocked or newly serviced an existing consumer want or need. Trend and fashion watch is very important, especially now, in this fast-paced lifestyle and daily changing technologies – it changes all together. For a full design concept only the trend is not enough; it is only approximately 50% of the picture. The most important part is personal style. As Rachel Zoe said, “style is a way of saying who you are without having to speak.” Thankfully our trends are moving more to personalization and customization where design and technology go hand-in-hand. It’s all about personal experience; all about story. More attuned to the intangibles: unique

REPAIRING DRYWALL Small indents on the surface of drywall can be easily repaired. There are two ways to do it. METHOD 1 Install additional screws next to the damaged spot. Then remove the old screws from the damaged part and use a utility knife to cut out all the loose and damaged parts of the drywall. Using a 15-cm patty knife spread a thin layer of patty or plaster on the part you need to repair and then even out the surface. Leave for 24 hours to dry after which sand and rub with a wet sponge to remove any stains left by the filler.

METHOD 2 In cases when the damaged part is too big to be repaired with the above method, cut out a cardboard stencil of a square or triangle shape and the size a bit larger than the spot you need to fix. Apply the stencil to the drywall and outline in pencil. Use a utility knife to cut out a piece of drywall inside the outline. Find an unused sheet of drywall and cut out a patch 4 to 6 centimetres larger than the stencil. Apply the same stencil to the back of the resulting piece and make an outline using a pencil. With the same knife, make an incision all along the outline deep enough to allow breaking the unwanted edges off but keeping the 4 to 6 cm of the cardboard facing intact. Using a 19-to-12-cm patty knife spread a thin layer of patty around the opening on the drywall surface, inside the opening, and along the edges of the patch. Insert the patch into the opening and press the projecting cardboard facing into the patty spread around the edges of the opening. After making sure that the patch is even with the surface of the rest of your drywall, even the patty out with a 15-to-25-cm-wide patty knife and leave for 24 hours to dry after which sand and rub with a wet sponge to remove any stains left by the filler. Apply the second layer of patty and repeat.

HOME-STAGING: THE SECRETS OF QUICK SALES

H

ello, my name is Natalia Slobidker. I am a professional Realtor, Designer and Canadian Certified Staging Professional. I began addressing the Staging aspect in the previous issue. We have discussed the first and most important rule when preparing to sell the home: decluttering. We also mentioned the second rule of maximum depersonalization; making sure that your habits and lifestyle are not “readable” to strangers.

As part of the experiment, we went shopping at a store which people of any level of income can afford: Walmart. We bought a new set of accessories for the bathroom, personal and bath towels, and baskets of different sizes to organize objects. Adjacent to the vanity is a bath, on top of which is a baby bath along with things hastily abandoned by the owner in the morning before going to work.

The third stage is preparing the space for an open house; that is, showcasing.

The intermediate step has been completed. Below is the result.

I always do this in two steps. To begin, we come up with a way to organize what is left of the clutter due to daily use but is not appropriate for display.

Please note – we left room inside the drawers for the boxes that are displayed on the counter in the picture.

This process is organized in such a way that within a few minutes it is possible to transform a regular living house into a model home.

Inside the drawers are household chemicals and hygiene products.

I decided to show this through an example of a bathroom because most of them are set up similarly and therefore, my recommendations will be helpful to a greater number of people. To illustrate my point, I will use the coincidental request of a client to prepare their bathroom for showcasing! This is how the bathroom looked like when I saw it in my client’s home for the first time. A chaotic display of a bunch of bottles, creams, and cosmetics; the hairdryer on the towel rail, door with hooks from which hung clothes and towels, and an organizer for small items on the opposite wall (you can see it in the mirror). Generally speaking, a normal household bathroom:

ALL ABOUT HOME

However, even if the buyers arrive and the hostess did not have time to place the box in the cupboard, the bathroom still has a neat appearance both on the outside and the inside. Yes, yes, people do look in the kitchen and bathroom drawers.

After the magazine’s release, I received many letters and among them many requests to show the entire process stepby-step.

18

We organized everything from the countertop on a functional basis into two boxes. The drawer’s contents were put into identical baskets, the hair dryer, towels, and clothes were hid in a drawer, and the trinket organizer found its new place on the inside of the door.

After talking with my client, I learned that there is not much left to declutter since she uses everything on the counter top on a daily basis. Thus, we immediately started with the second stage. She kindly agreed to let me use her bath for our objectives and show each step of the process. The second stage is the organization of everyday life in the period of a sale. Since an inexperienced person may make a mistake when choosing the color scheme for decorating, I decided to go for a win-win option: a combination of black and white.

a change, but you cannot pin-point it, email me at info@topdecor.ca or call at 416-333-7418 and I will do my best to answer as many questions as I can in the next issue.

Selling? Buying? Investing? Do not have time to seek out the experts? Everything that you may need at any point in the deal-making process: under one roof.

With a flick of the wrist, the bathroom turns spotless in seconds. You can be sure that such a room will not cause negative feelings in potential buyers.

Minimum chores, maximum profit.

NATALIA SLOBIDKER

Note the boxes, which stood on the table, are now hidden away. The scented candles on a silver tray exude a discreet flavor and serve as a color accent. Please note that for bathroom areas with more a pronounced character, this blackand-white color scheme may not work, so be careful.

If you have any further questions or if you have a space which needs

TYPES OF INTERIOR DOORS

I

nterior doors are any doors that do not provide access to the outside of the house and include doors found on closets, bathrooms, bedrooms and any other enclosed area of the house. They are found in any type of dwelling or office and come in many different styles, so it is easy to find one that suits your decor, preferences and budget. In terms of construction, interior doors include hinged doors and sliding doors. Hinged doors, also known as passage doors, are the most commonly used doors in our homes. The one end of the door is mounted on the hinges, whereas the other end swings into or out of the room. They are easy to install, reliable, closely fitted and have the best temperature and soundproof characteristics. Hinged doors include regular one-panel doors, French doors (or double doors) and bi-fold doors – usually two panels that are hinged together and fold into each other. Such doors are commonly used for areas such

as the laundry room, pantry and closets. Sliding doors also known as bypass doors do not swing open; instead, you need to slide them on the track. Since these doors do not swing open, they do not disturb other elements of the room and are best for smaller spaces. They also add interest to the room decor. Nevertheless, sliding doors are not as good in terms of temperature and soundproofing as the hinged doors. This category includes pocket doors that are the same sliding doors that roll back into the wall to appear virtually invisible when open. Doors can be made of different materials. Solid core doors are constructed from particleboard or fibre core materials, giving them solid weight that helps reduce noise. They may be made of hardwood, such as oak, ash, beech, or cherry or of softwood – for example, pine. These high-end doors are durable, strong, and stylish. Hollow-core doors are made with interwoven corrugated hollow cells that sup-

port the outer face of the door; they are lightweight, affordable and ideal for lowtraffic areas. The vacuum moulding technology used in manufacturing hollow-core doors ensures their high quality. Their core is usually made of wood-like materials, including particleboard, or fibre core materials and may be faced with any kind of quality wood. It is hard to tell the difference between solid and hollow core doors offhand because both categories may come in any desirable style. Another popular material for facing interior doors is laminate. Laminated panels come in classic or modern design. Laminated doors are resistant to deformation and keep their look for a long time. They are the best for rooms with increased humidity. Today’s building materials market offers great variety of interior doors suitable for all tastes, styles, and budgets.

THE YEAR 2017 –

A year of inspirational fabrics!

T

he year 2017 is just around the corner, and with it comes many new and inspirational ways to spruce up our homes. With so many of the amazing new fabrics we have been seeing lately it’s hard not to be motivated to change up your décor. The beautiful lush velvets, richly woven silks, the bold yet unassuming texture of linens can not only inspire but when combined with the abundance of wonderful patterns and colours available they can also create a wonderful tailor-made living space. Fabrics have the extraordinary capability of adding life to our space by transforming it with colour, texture and patterns. They add warmth and softness to your room design; they can create interest and add a focal point to any room. A bold statement can be made with the introduction of powerful patterns and rich colours, or a subtle relaxed aesthetic can be created in that same

space with soft calming neutrals which are more about texture than pattern. When working with clients I try to educate them in all aspects associated with the fabrics we are suggesting for their home such as durability, pattern intricacy, the hang of a fabric and of course colour. There are many wonderful colours that we will continue to see trending for 2017. For instance, rich jewel tones maintain their popularity, however are now warmer and more muted; playing on adding a richness and luxury to our designs. As popular as the deep, rich muted tones are, we are also seeing softer, more romantic palettes that add a hint of colour to an easy and neutral environment. The fabrics moving forward reflect these wonderful colours and combine with an abundance of patterns from strips, flora and fretwork, to a resurgence of ultratraditional patterns like toile and chinoiserie. Soft flow-like fabrics such as textured sheers are increasing in popularity as they add a more relaxed alternative to formal drapery. Texture is very on-point for 2017 and what better way to stay current than introducing some of the wonderful textured fabrics to

your living space. Whether it is beautiful lush velvet for pillows or a coarsely woven linen blend for a new pair of drapes, or perhaps embossed faux leather is the way to go for a new ottoman – whatever your decision you will be sure to be on trend with your fabric selection. One great go-to fabric supplier that offers wonderful affordable selections is Alendel Fabrics. They are always introducing new decadent fabric designs saturated with colour and inspiring yet classic patterns that can blend beautifully into any space. Remember, fabric is not just about great colour and patterns; attention should also be paid to durability when making your selections. For furniture that will be more commonly used, consider more durable fabrics. Also, there are many fabrics available today that are high performing endurance fabrics with moisture resistant features. These are beyond “forgiving” and are fantastic for high-traffic homes. So here’s to the fast-approaching 2017 that will be full of wonderful and inspirational fabrics that will create many beautiful and luxurious living spaces. Enjoy!

ARE YOU FEELING DOWN? DO YOU KNOW WHY?

I

f we believe psychologists, our mental state is directly connected to our living space. Therefore, if you are feeling down, look around and see what you can change in your home to fill your life with light and colour to make you feel happier. Look at the world with new eyes! Windows are the eyes of your room. Take care of them by washing the panes clean, and your surroundings will instantly become brighter. Remove clutter and get rid of obsolete items replacing them with flower pots on your windowsill. If plants are not your thing, decorate the sill with framed pictures, figurines, or other fun accessories. Wash and iron the curtains. Clean windows will fill your room with light that we miss so much during the winter months, make the place look fresher, and give its inhabitants a charge of joy, optimism, and good mood. The items you have forgotten... Do you remember what is hidden in the many

drawers of your desk, closet, under the bed, or behind a sofa? We bet you could not remember offhand. Yet, there are zillions of things sitting in there – most of them obsolete. This junk has collected so much dust that you will not manage to go through it without sneezing. Make it a rule: if you have forgotten about an item and have not used it for two years, chuck it! If the item is still good give it away rather than dumping it. If it has been at your fingertips and you had not found a chance to use it, it will most likely stay unused in the future. Do not clutter your living space - revise your possessions regularly. Try to place them in such a way that they do not take too much space and create a cozy air. Dust the room surfaces often.

space is the more comfortable you feel and the easier it is to chase away moodiness. Avoid bulbs that shed light of purplish, grey, bluish, or green tones as well as dark lampshades. The best lamps for a living space give bright white daylight keeping the colour of the objects in the room natural. Such lighting is associated with sunlight or the light of a fire burning in a fireplace and as such it makes the room look and feel cozier and warmer.

Let there be light! Revise your room lighting. Is it sufficient? Do you feel right at this level of lighting? If lighting in your room is dim or cold, it will make you feel down even if you do not realize why. The lighter your

New Year... New Kitchen?

A

s a designer I adore the timeless and clean backdrop that white kitchen cabinetry offers. Some may be concerned that having a white kitchen can be stark and cold, but what it really comes down to is the finish; how you pull together your kitchen makes all the difference. Your kitchen is a long term decision and investment; in my opinion, nothing beats an allwhite kitchen. It defies trends, is classic and timeless and can be transformed easily by simply updating its accents. If you are planning a kitchen renovation in the upcoming year I suggest considering mixing and matching finishes in an all-white kitchen. Using white as your main cabinet colour is key while adding contrast with an alternate colour for your island cabinets is a nice way to add interest to an all-white space. Classic white kitchens can be easily paired with a modern style. Kitchens that pull both the living and cooking functions together are considered to be “entertainment kitchens” and appear to be a perennial favourite. In smaller spaces it is good to have a visual division.

TIPS: In an all-white kitchen, introduce colour through furniture and accents as a way to add pop. Changing the accessories (window treatments, stools or accent pieces) can dramatically change the look of a kitchen. In your white kitchen recognize how important the flooring is - it is a key factor

and the best place to bring a warm tone with dark or soft hardwood flooring or tile. It is important to vary the finishes when you have an all-white kitchen. If your cabinets are a matte finish then you can incorporate a higher sheen countertop. After your cabinets, the second largest impact points are your countertop and backsplash. If you want your backsplash as a focal point, make sure to keep your counters clutter-free to show it off. Integrated appliances give a kitchen a seamless look and professional stainless steel adds an interesting mix to a white kitchen. Natural light gives the kitchen an airy and breezy feel. Lighting is an important element in a kitchen. Choosing lighting that is both practical and ideally suits the style of the kitchen are ingredients to a harmonious and functional design. When remodelling your kitchen it is important that all of the essential features are displayed in a cohesive and attractive manner. The selection of finishes for your kitchen is such a critical decision that hiring a design professional whose style you admire will be well worth their fee. Some of my favourite white cabinetry colours are: Dove White OC17 by Benjamin Moore or Ammonite 274 by Farrow & Ball.

backsplash to add interest to the kitchen. My go-to material is a classic marble backsplash. Its veining and movement in a brick or herringbone pattern will be timeless.

To create a dynamic and warm white-kitchen, follow these rules:

Glass cabinets and open shelves – incorporating white cabinets in a completely white kitchen adds interest and will break up large spans of cabinetry.

Bring in as much light as possible to create a bright and airy feel. Wood - incorporate wood in the flooring and accents to add further warmth and contrast. Consider looking at one of my favourite companies Kentwood Flooring for vast selections of colours. Backsplash - bring in some colour and texture; choose a statement piece for your

Colourful accessories – this section is where you can add personality and easily change it up for a different look. All of your choices are important with a white kitchen but be sure not to skimp on your lighting and hardware. They act as the jewellery for your kitchen and make all the difference as the finishing touches.
