IN FRONT OF THE FIREPLACE
T
he wood-burning fireplace has become almost a thing of the past in Canada. Due to various hazards and regulations as well as cost considerations, you can find them mostly in older homes while new home builders use a gas or electrical substitute. Of course, no one can stop you from installing a traditional fireplace in your home but it is a good thing to consider all of your options. A fireplace can increase a home’s appeal and transform cold living spaces into cozy retreats. During long and hard winter days in Canada, nothing can remind you more of warmer times than the right fireplace. Most fireplaces are located in living rooms, family rooms, dens, and finished basements even though more and more of them have lately been installed in bedrooms, dining rooms, and kitchens. They are great additions that can help decrease heating costs that have been climbing steadily over the past few years. Installing a fireplace is not easy. When you are dealing with a potential explosive and CO2 you need to hire a professional who knows what they are doing. If done improperly, it can be very dangerous and lead to hazards that compromise your health and safety. If you still insist on having a wood-burning fireplace installed in your home, you will need to decide on one of the two options: prefabricated or traditional masonry. The former is less expensive but not as decorative as the brick-and-chimney traditional one. Traditional masonry fireplaces can last centuries, while metal ones will not last more than 25 years. However, glass doors and built-in fans increase the efficiency and

warm air a prefabricated fireplace pumps out compared to traditional masonry fireplaces. In fact, a traditional masonry fireplace is the least clean-burning and energy efficient fireplace you can choose. Depending on its shape, a masonry fireplace can actually use more heat than it produces. Gas fireplaces require minimal maintenance. This makes them a great option for homeowners who love the look of a fireplace but hate the extra work of a woodburning unit like going outside to get wood, chopping it, hauling it back home, finding the proper storage, etc. – and the extra cost associated with it all. Once a gas fireplace is properly installed the only thing you need to do is flip the switch when it gets cold. Just make sure you hire an experienced professional to do your installation. The third option is, of course, an electric fireplace which is essentially an electric heater that mimics a wood or coal burning fireplace with either light or visual flames. They are often placed inside conventional fireplaces which can no longer be used for fires. They can also be mounted on a wall where there was previously no fireplace. They plug into the electrical sockets in the wall and can run on a “flame only” setting or can be used as a heater. There is a number of advantages to having an electric fireplace. Most obviously they are a more modern and stylish alternative to the bulky traditional fireplaces. Some can be as thin as an LCD television and boast a screen which shows flickering flames to create the effect of a real fire. These heaters can be placed anywhere in the home with no need of a chimney or

ventilation system. They are suitable for bedrooms, kitchens, and living rooms and can create a design feature in even the smallest space. They are also easier to control, with remote controls and exact temperature readings. Even though electric fireplaces are often less efficient than other types due to the inefficiency of generating electricity, from the cost effectiveness and simplicity point of view, it is advisable to invest in an electric fireplace that will provide a safer and warmer environment for your home. If you prefer a more contemporary look, why not install a wall-mounted electric fireplace on your wall, with the TV mounted above? Just be sure to choose a fireplace on which the heat is expelled out the bottom and not out the top. While the heat output is far less than a gas or wood-burning fireplace, you still do not want any heat directly blowing onto your TV. Another great reason to combine your TV with an electric fireplace is the fabulous selection of media mantels that are available. Most entertainment mantels allow you to place your TV on or above the fireplace cabinet, while offering open storage below, for your DVD player and service provider’s ‘box’. There are also wonderful custom cabinets available which offer storage that’s completely hidden behind the panels of the mantel, so that no one knows that your DVD’s and components are stored there. These custom units are ideal for homes and condos where the TV room is in the living room and you prefer to hide all the TV paraphernalia from view.

Should you need a safe for more extensive documentation as well as for keeping valuable art or furs for the time you are away, look for a bigger size. A safe weighing under 150 kilos needs to be affixed to the wall or the floor; otherwise, should a breakin occur, the criminals will easy carry your box out together with its contents.
Safes differ not only in size but also in locks, convenience, reliability, and the level of protection against such hazards as breakin, fire, flooding, and electromagnetic rays. Some of them do not even look like a safe but may pass for a piece of furniture.

SMALL AND BEAUTIFUL
D
espite the wide choice of advanced materials, ceramic tiles have remained one of the most popular types of covering for both floors and walls in spaces with increased humidity, temperature swings, and the possibility of water splashes. Not only are ceramic tiles are impervious to such perils but they are also known for their strength, durability, and easy maintenance. Ceramic tiles are the best material for smaller spaces. An added bonus of using ceramic tiles in a small bathroom is that it helps visually enhance the room and create a feeling of space. When selecting ceramic tiles for your bathroom make sure they are not too thick but still sufficiently strong. The thickness consideration is important because the thicker the tile is the more space it takes.
The best choice for the walls in a small bathroom is smooth tiles that, by reflecting light, will create an illusion of a larger space, while for the floor, you should use non-glossy tiles with a rough non-slip finish designed specifically for the bathroom floors. The colour, pattern, and size of the tiles are also important. Tiles for a small bathroom should be light-toned – for the same reason as stated above. To make the pattern more interesting, lay the tiles as a mosaic effect, using lighter tones for different colours. If you feel that using lighter tones alone may create a monotonous effect, introduce striking accents. Avoid laying larger-size tiles in a small space, especially when using many additional elements and inserts. The best size for a small bathroom is the medium-size tile that will not dwarf the surrounding decor elements but will stand out as an additional decorative detail.

THE UNDERMOUNT SINK
U
ndermount is a style of sink that allows the basin to be mounted beneath the countertop. Very common in kitchens and bathrooms, these sinks are popular because they promote a seamless appearance and allow for effective use of space. With its plumbing almost always concealed behind cabinetry, the undermount sink has an advantage favoured by those who like clean and uncluttered spaces. One of the main identifying characteristics of these sinks is that they do not feature decorative rims. In fact, because they are made to be mounted underneath the counter, many of these sinks do not have visible rims at all. Instead they are positioned either flush with the counter or a few inches beneath it. Undermount bathroom sinks are a major trend in bathroom remodeling. They have a contemporary look, are easy to clean and come in a wide variety of materials, colours, shapes and sizes that match any bathroom decorative style. Ceramic sinks remain a versatile favourite, but they are in no way the limit. Choosing from the variety of colours and shapes is obviously a matter of personal preference. However, there are some important considerations when choosing between various materials.

ALL ABOUT HOME
CERAMIC SINKS China and fireclay ceramic are the standard for bathroom sinks. Basic ceramic sinks are non-porous, durable, germ-resistant, and relatively inexpensive. They can be painted, patterned and patterned and formed into any shape. Remember that heavy objects may chip ceramic sinks.
GLASS SINKS Glass is trendy, but it may be impractical for some homeowners. Glass needs to be wiped down after every use to avoid unpleasant water stains. Like ceramic, glass will not rust or stain. Paying extra for tempered glass for a sink in your regular bathroom is a good investment. Of course, you may install a fragile, non-tempered-glass sink in a guest bathroom if it is not used on a regular basis. Also keep in mind that even tempered glass can chip relatively easily.
COPPER SINKS Copper sinks bring a classic look to a bathroom; they have a beautiful and distinctive texture. Copper also possesses a natural anti-bacterial quality. However, copper requires significant upkeep. It must be cleaned regularly, and it should be wiped dry after every use to avoid water stains and discolouration. Copper also changes colour
e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com
over time, so it is difficult to predict what the sink will look like in a few years.
CAST IRON SINKS Most cast iron sinks are basically damageproof but, being a great high-end option for the kitchen, they are not the best choice for your bathroom – they are heavy, difficult to install, and their industrial look may clash with your bathroom decor.
STAINLESS STEEL SINKS Similarly, stainless steel is a great option for the kitchen, but may be less attractive in a bathroom. Steel sinks can be noisy, although newer sinks often have an undercoat with sound-deadening finishes.
STONE SINKS Granite, soapstone, and other stones can be carved into an undermount bathroom sink. Most of these materials are porous, and may trap germs and stains. Composite undermount bathroom sinks are rare, but they are available. They are less porous and can be formed into a wider variety of shapes. Most are made of quartz, granite or other stone mixed with acrylic binders. Like cast iron, stone sinks are heavy and expensive, and may be costly and complicated to install.

INTERIOR LIGHTING DESIGN
ighting design is one of the newest fields in interior design that allows to achieve the best visual result with the help of various lighting solutions.
Lighting design is based on the whole slew of optical characteristics including optimal brightness, correct colour rendering, skilled distribution of illumination, and shadow creation. Of course, the principal tool of lighting design is light itself that generates a certain impression of the space, colour scheme, shape, and texture of every object. Lighting design has yet another purpose and that is solving not just esthetic but functional issues as well in regards of the room’s purpose. Artificial lighting is one of the main tools of lighting design and can be used to correct drawbacks of natural lighting. Correct lighting is very important when designing spaces because it can produce certain moods (for example, relaxing – for living spaces or mobilizing – for working rooms), visually change dimensions and

ALL ABOUT HOME
proportions of the space, create necessary accents in the interior style by emphasizing its advantages and hiding disadvantages. Look, for example, at the famous chiaroscuro, or the harmony of light and shadow. Various types of lighting differently affect the way humans perceive colour and its shades. Incandescent and halogen bulbs intensify warm colours and conceal or even sometimes, distort cool ones making blues look greenish. Daylight bulbs, on the contrary, intensify cool shades and diminish perception of warm colours. As a general rule, interiors in light and warm tones do not require too much lighting while darker and cooler shades in room design call for strong illumination. A skilled play of coloured lighting can create special effects. Various shades of red lighting in the room generate a romantic mood, orange has a reviving effect, pink hues make faces look healthier and fresher, while blues and greens have a calming result. One needs to remember though that
e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com
coloured lighting is wrong for rooms whose function requires utmost natural lighting, like; for example, bathrooms, the kitchen work zone, or the den. Some lighting design tricks serve to play with the visual characteristics of space. For example, it is possible to visually modify the dimensions of a narrow and long room by directing bright light upon its furthest wall while illuminating the other three walls uniformly. A small square room will look elongated with only one wall illuminated. A long narrow hallway can be “made” wider with the help of longitudinal illumination along the whole perimeter. A low ceiling will look taller if you place lighting all around the room and hide it behind a false panel – thus reflected lighting will visually raise the ceiling. On the other hand, if you want to visually diminish the height of the room, direct its lighting downward and towards the walls. By changing the angle of illumination you can create an illusion of a slanted ceiling. To draw attention to a certain element of decor, place it in the limelight of a focused beam.

ransparent seating is a sure way to make the kitchen beautiful and unusual. Transparent chairs look stylish and trendy. Transparent plastic furniture looks especially effective in a small kitchen; these chairs and stools appear almost weightless, nicely retract light, and visually dissolve into the space. Transparent pieces are an excellent match for kitchens decorated in hi-tech or avant-garde style, in combination with other futuristic design elements. This kind of furniture is very appropriate in a laconic style minimalistic kitchen. Combining transparent chairs with a traditional dinette or Scandinavian style dining furniture creates a striking effect, especially when accompanied by the correct streamline shape and right accessories. Transparent furniture is extremely practical. It can be used both inside and outside due to its advanced materials that are less susceptible to elements. Nevertheless, plastic furniture needs to be protected from direct sunlight and rain as well as from aggressive liquids, especially the ones containing alcohol. High-quality transparent chairs and stools are made from thermoplastic that is con-

Another material they are made of is acrylic or organic glass. Polycarbonate is superior in light refracting and can better withstand mechanical impact than its counterpart, acrylic glass. Chairs and armchairs made of organic or acrylic glass are more lightweight and less expensive; besides they are easier to shape into even the most intricate forms.
Transparent furniture is versatile and can look great in the decor of any colour scheme. Chairs made of transparent coloured plastic create an unexpected accent, add brightness and expression to decor, and improve the overall look of the kitchen or dining room. No matter what colours you prefer, the market offers anything, from white, through amber yellow, black, orange, red, and green, to turquoise “invisible” seating furniture to help you create the best solution for your kitchen decor. Transparent chairs also greatly complement a glass dining table.
Most models are made of transparent plastic in their entirety even though you can find some with metal legs – aluminum or stainless steel. Weightlessness and laconic design are the two most important criteria for their design. Nevertheless, functionality is the most important consideration – no matter how stylish and trendy the chair is, it needs to be first and foremost - comfortable.

ello, my name is Natalia Slobidker! I am a professional full-time realtor. I specialize in real estate pre-sale preparations, sales strategy development and keeping real estate transaction risks to a minimum. My mission: minimum stress – maximum profit, in any real estate transaction. Today, my article is for those who are selling their house or condo for the first time. The first task at hand: assessing the market and evaluating your property. The current season – the spring months – is historically the best for sales. If you are already thinking about selling, it is difficult to find a better opportunity. In the summer, the market usually calms down. It raises its head in the fall, stretching in preparation for the winter hibernation. The Greater Toronto Area’s real estate market has indeed been in very good shape for the past two years and barely subject to seasonality. Its sales volume and speed are mind-blowing even for those of us who have worked in real estate for a long time. Despite this idyllic condition, however, I would not count on it continuing into this year. History knows of cases when the real estate market was capricious, suddenly turning its back and leaving behind a trail of unsold homes in its wake.
You cannot, alas, influence the first four; however, the fifth – the way the house looks in the eyes of a potential buyer – is entirely in your hands. This is the case where you absolutely need outside help. I have yet to meet a person who would be able to assess their home objectively. Even professional realtors and stagers ask the opinion of colleagues when selling their own houses. The question “How much is my house worth?” has no simple answer. It is always a range of prices – from A to B. The difference between the lower and upper limit sometimes reaches 10% and that is a lot of money. The house can be sold “as is” in the lower end of prices or you can invest a little time, money and effort to ensure the higher end. Proper and professional preparation of real estate for sale ensuring the highest possible price – this is a task with many unknowns which, without knowledge and experience, cannot be solved.
So the state of the market, I hope, has been properly understood. Now let’s discuss the real estate appraisal. Your property values are affected by the following factors: 1. Location 2. Lot size 3. House size 4. House age 5. House condition

There is significance as to where the house is located, which price range it already belongs to, who the potential buyer is, and much more. Depending on the potential seller – an owner of a condo downtown or someone with a farm near Lake Simcoe – sales strategy and preparation prior to it may be radically different. Therefore, I will try to illuminate the approaches to other, more general questions below. Many find it difficult to decide what to do first: sell and then look for a new home or vice versa. There is no single answer, but I will try to show the pros and cons of both methods. I consider it my professional duty to clearly explain what worst possible development of events, in other words the “worst case scenario” can be expected in each case. Suppose you bought first and then decided to sell. In this case, you may find yourself with two houses on your hands. If your financial situation allows it you will for some time have to maintain two homes, or else greatly reduce the price of the old house to speed up its sale. If not, then I am afraid this may result in the loss of your deposit and possible lawsuits from the sellers of your new property. If you sold first and are now looking to buy, then, in the worst case it may turn into a situation where you do not have a place to live. At that point you will need a rental and continue the search from there. In my practice, I try to avoid this situation, finding less painful solutions. For example, in one of my last deals I agreed with the buyers’ agent that my clients have the option to stay at their old home for up to three months after the deal’s completion in case they have not yet bought a new home. Given that my clients had three young children this was extremely important. We were able to buy a house before the deal ended, but my clients decided to take advantage of this clause: they are going to rent their old house while renovating the new one.

I recommend to first sell and then buy if you know that your property has a flaw that may affect its marketability. For example: proximity to a high voltage wire or rail, a poorly planned kitchen, a football field or school yard behind your backyard, proximity to a house where suicide was committed, and the like. If you are sure that your house has no such shortcomings, you can safely begin searching for a house to buy while simultaneously preparing your own house for sale. This ensures that you can put up your old property on the market, only a couple of days after signing the contract in its best possible look. In this case, your risk of ending up in a situation as described above is minimized. It is important that at the time of the sale the house is properly presented and properly evaluated. Unfortunately, many people are inclined to trust the person who named the highest price over the person with a realistic one (don’t we all tend to believe in miracles?). An overpriced house becomes familiar after two to three weeks on the market
and then, when the owner is forced to reduce the price to the real market value, the effect of a fresh proposal has already been lost. At that point, even a well-prepared home only gets its lowest possible price. With the advent of the Internet, people have gained access to a wealth of information, statistics, forecasts, evaluations of experts and those posing as such, sales history and other. It is very easy to get lost in this stream of information if you do not know how to filter out what is wrong, unnecessary, irrelevant, or else speculative. Therefore, the best course of action before making any sort of decision is to consult with a specialist, especially since it costs you nothing. There are still many aspects that I would like to address. These include: selling a home with pets, how to keep it clean during the time of the sale if you have small children, what needs to be checked, repaired, or corrected before the sale, how to prepare for an inspection by the house buyers, the multiple-offer strategy as compared to the classical sales strategy, what to do if you do not match the date of sale and purchase, return on minor repairs and so on.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to cover all of this in one article. I will be telling you about these issues and much more in the next issue.
But if you do not want to or cannot wait and you have questions to which you would like to get some utmost honest answers, or if you just want to evaluate your property, please call me and I will gladly help you out!

JACUZZI: HISTORY
W
hat is a Jacuzzi? It is the most popular brand name in the whirlpool industry. A whirlpool is a tub fitted with piping, an electric pump, and water jets. The pump circulates the water through the pipes using an underwater suction fitting and several underwater jets. Each jet contains a vented constriction near its opening that injects air into the water. In most cases, the ratio of air to water can be adjusted--at a central control, at each jet or both sites. The Jacuzzi is a well-known symbol of luxury but Candido Jacuzzi did not set out to make his name synonymous with laid-back California luxury. Jacuzzi did not invent the whirlpool; it was others that made his soothing-sounding name generic. The company has descended from mechanics who built propellers and industrial pumps. Every success story starts with a dream, and it is no different for this company.
1900s Candido Jacuzzi was born in northern Italy in 1903 and emigrated with his family, fifteen strong, to the United States early in the century. The family settled in Berkeley, California. Candido, the youngest of seven brothers, would never complete grammar school. The first Jacuzzi Brothers Inc. product was an airplane propeller known as the Jacuzzi ‘toothpick.’ America’s first military planes sported the specialized propeller in World War I. When the war ended the brothers designed the Jacuzzi J-7, an enclosed cabin monoplane that carried mail for the U.S. Postal Ser-

vice, and passengers from the San Francisco Bay Area to Yosemite National Park.
1950s The machinists followed with a breakthrough development of submersible pumps that opened markets worldwide to Jacuzzi. Factories sprouted in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Italy. When Candido’s JacuzziÍs 15-month old son contracted rheumatoid arthritis – a crippling and painful condition - Candido could not stand to see his son suffering between the regular hydrotherapy treatments at local hospitals. He realized that the water pumps Jacuzzi Brothers was making for industrial use could be adapted to give his son soothing whirlpool treatments at home. So, Jacuzzi designed an aerating pump that could be used in a bathtub. The unit sat right in the water and was portable. Over the years, word of these water jets reached sufferers who sought the same home relief provided by the portable whirlpool and Jacuzzi manufactured some for special orders. The portable pump J-300 was sold to hospitals and schools.
1960s This innovative spirit was captured by Roy Jacuzzi, a third-generation family member who had begun learning the business as a teenager. Sensing the American consumer’s interest in health, fitness and leisure activities, Roy invented and marketed the first self-contained, fully integrated whirlpool bath in 1968. By incorporating jets into the sides of the tub, it became the bath that almost single-handedly created an industry.
1970s As larger units were designed to accommodate several people, Jacuzzi incorporated heating and filtration systems to keep the water warm and clean, thus creating the first spa in 1970. In 1979, the family sold to New York-based Kidde Inc. All the family members left the business or retired, except for Roy, who stayed on to run the Jacuzzi operations.
1980s The 80s were a decade of new designs for Jacuzzi. The Avanza was introduced - a
whirlpool bath/hot tub that could be installed inside or outside a house.
1990s In the early 90s, Roy Jacuzzi was inducted into the National Kitchen and bath Hall of Fame, recognizing him for his many contributions in the innovation of hydrotherapy for home use.
Today Jacuzzi has become the world’s most recognized and largest selling brand of jetted/whirlpool baths and spas. In addition to the first whirlpool bath patent, Jacuzzi has 250 worldwide patents for advancements in pump systems, jet technology, air controls, and product design. Today, Jacuzzi branded hot tubs, baths, showers, toilets, sinks, and accessories are commonly found in residential homes, hotels, and aboard cruise ships and have become popular in high-end spas around the world. Jacuzzi products are distributed in about 60 countries worldwide.

Selecting the Perfect COUNTERTOPS
C
hoosing the right type of countertop for your kitchen is one of the most important decisions you will make when designing the interior. Kitchens have become the most used and enjoyed spaces in our homes, which means that it is imperative to outfit them with surfaces that are durable and aesthetically pleasing. Weather you are looking to achieve a full renovation or a small facelift, kitchen countertops are crucial to creating a stylish impact in the space.

Since your horizontal surfaces are one of the most expensive investments you will make it is important to weigh all of the options for your renovation project.
When it comes to natural stone, we can categorize them into three different types:
Nowadays countertop choices are endless: granite, marble, engineered stone, solid surfaces and laminate. From frugal to fabulous, all options have pros and cons! The appearance of your countertop is just as important as its performance and you want to ensure that your selection appeals to both sides of the spectrum.
Granite – one of the only natural stones that is durable enough to withstand the hustle and bustle of any kitchen! On the downside, this product has been around for many years now and is no longer the most stylish option so select your colours wisely in order to ensure a lasting appeal.
If you are on a budget consider laminate; some nice options on the market today mimic real stone patterns and straight edge profiles make the look quite contemporary and sleek.
1 2
Natural Quartz is one notch down from granite when comparing durability; however, on the upside this material tends to be much more beautiful and closely resembles some of the exotic marbles.
3
Marble is one of the most elegant stones on the market. It is a great product for bathroom countertops and although the sheer beauty of the slabs are tempting, this material is very porous. It absorbs water, wine and acidic substances. This attractive surface stains easily and requires re-sealing and re-polishing annually.
Aside from the three natural stones, engineered stones are more popular then ever. Products like Quartex Surfaces are highly durable and come in a large variety of colours and styles. These man-made quartz stones are “all the hype” when it comes to kitchen design. This revolutionary and modern product is extremely durable and beautiful. It has become the industry favourite because these fabricated products are reproducing the look of some of the most exotic stones on the market, making this product not only aesthetically pleasing but also much more affordable for kitchen renovations. At this year’s 2017 Interior Design Show, I had the privilege of designing their booth and creating some unique visual displays with their latest products. Come meet me January 21, 2017 at the Quartex Surfaces Booth #2122 from 12:30-3:30pm. Bring your kitchen and bathroom design dilemmas; I will be conducting one-on-one consultations at the show for all of your kitchen and bathroom renovation concerns.

MAN, WOMAN AND DECOR
“M
28
en are from Mars, women are from Venus”. This statement holds true for virtually any situation in life. It is no different in interior design situations where the two sexes have different notions on decor features. Nevertheless, these differences of opinion can be solved.
of them are conservative in this issue but some go to the other extreme. These adepts of the modern and non-traditional prefer unique furniture “to make it look different from everybody else”. Women have to calm these types down and bring them back to reality. Women’s advice on decorating is usually more valuable because their imagination helps them to see the entire picture.
1. THE COLOUR SCHEME
3. FURNITURE
Being subtler, women have always gravitated towards soft pastel hues. Pink, powder blue, or lavender are smoky nuances able to create an inimitable air of lightness and mystery in a typically feminine room. Men usually ignore such subtle colours; they have a straight line that separates the colour wheel according to the function. They base their colour selection on the mood of the room: blue, orange, or yellow for an “energetic” room, white for a calm room, brown for a mysterious one, etc.
At last, the two counterparts got down to selecting furniture for the new decor. He will bring in his favourite rocking chair that he cannot even think of parting with while she will buy a simple white sofa that has been her dream for years. The solution of such a conflict lies in a modern floor lamp matching the colour of the sofa placed next to the lazy boy, and a cozy multicoloured throw on the sofa that matches the style of the old rocker. Such decorative cooperation has some interesting points.
2. GENERAL DECOR STYLE
4. ACCESSORIES
Men tend to argue with women as to the style of the room under consideration. Most
Women tend to overdo it in this department. Their passion for flounces, bows,

and figurines can be kept in check only by the practical male attitude. “Where are you going to place it?”, “Do we really need three more coloured cushions for the sofa?” or “But you have bought exactly the same figurine last month!” will do the trick. Therefore, take your man accessory shopping – he will cool you off and offer valuable albeit ironic advice.
5. IN THE STORE Have you seen a married couple in a mall shopping for groceries? She stands by one store because she feels the prices are better there, while he insists on another one because the quality of the goods in it is better. Eventually they buy from the third merchant who offers both a suitable price and good quality. This pattern is usually repeated in furniture stores, building supply stores, wall covering stores, etc. Shopping together for the new look of your home is a great idea because vivid female imagination comes up with interesting ideas which the male common sense uses to achieve a sensible solution.

SELECTING THE PERFECT FLOORS
O
ne of the most important and expensive design elements in your home is the flooring. It is no wonder that it is also one of the most difficult for my clients to resolve. I find that the problem is not the lack of options, but rather the quantity of seemingly identical options that exist. Especially with the constant addition of new products to the market and the voice of our grandfather in our subconscious assuring us that nothing is better than a good solid oak floor, it is harder than ever to make a choice. Respectfully, granddad, you are no longer correct. Following is a quick overview of today’s top options and how to use and combine them to get the greatest impact for your budget.
WOOD Solid wood floors though once the top choice for quality and longevity are now

quickly being eliminated from the market. They waste precious natural resources being made from solid thicknesses of high-grade woods both above and below where it is needed. Our Canadian climate inherently sees extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity levels which are also big problems with solid wood – causing gapping and buckling seasonally. In short, do not use solid wood if you can avoid it. Engineered floors - layer of genuine hardwood the thickness of which varies depending on the quality, which is adhered to a substrate of multiple layers of alternating directions of wood, much like plywood. This means a far more stable product which also allows more design freedom with wider plank sizes and lengths. One company to take a look at is Kentwood; they truly offer a vast array of the latest stylish finishes and colour options.
e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com
Where: Opt for Engineered wood in abovegrade floors, over in-floor heating systems and if the budget allows even in basements!
LAMINATE No longer being the “dirty word,” laminate quality has improved along with printing and production technology in general. Current offerings are near identical facsimiles of the real deal. Some companies offer five or more varied plank styles per box which creates a very random and natural installation. It is also extremely hardwearing and affordable starting at $2.00 per square foot. Where: Perfect for playrooms, basements and over in-floor heating systems. I like to match laminate to my engineered wood and substitute the lesser in the basement. Guests will never suspect the change but the cost savings translates to big bucks.

LUXURY VINYL Laminate’s fancy new cousin, this vinyl product offers all the benefits of laminate with the bonus of also being water resistant and some are deemed water proof! Look for options with a base layer of cork and glue-
free click systems that are simply held in place with their own weighted design. A great company to look at is Evoke; here you will find a vast array of amazing finishes and colours to work with. Where: Playrooms, basements and even light commercial projects. The malleable nature of the vinyl also allows some forgiveness on unleveled subfloors.
QUARTZ Much like the printing process on laminate and vinyl, quartz floors can now be created to emulate virtually any material. Designers have concluded that there is nothing
quite like the soft organic nature of marble to elevate a design; however, natural stone is also porous which means maintenance and quality. Opt instead for higher quality quartz from companies like Quartex Surfaces available in oversized slabs for a truly seamless look. Where: Washroom floors, counters and walls and over in-floor heating systems. There has never been a better time to make an investment in new floors. By combining beautiful engineered plank floors with a hardwearing laminating or vinyl and finishing it off with quartz, your investment will pay off in durability, aesthetics and value!

SOPHISTICATED KITCHEN INTERIORS
N
atural stone has become ever popular in today’s interior design. New technologies of stone treatment made this material less expensive and as such more affordable for an average homeowner. Most people prefer marble and granite as their decorative option. Natural stones are worthy of admiration because of their texture and colours. One of such stones is granite. The word granite comes from the Italian word “granite” meaning “granular” – because this stone contains granules of volcanic rock in various colours and sizes. This hard stone consisting of quartz, mica, and feldspar looks great in the kitchen. Granite counters add additional style and individuality even to the most sophisticated interiors and are extremely durable – a dream for the chef of the family. Granite comes in a wide variety of colours to facilitate your choice. Mother Nature made this stone in black, gray, red, and even pink but its main feature is the specs of various tones that a lot individuality to the decor. Granite has high durability against exterior influences and is so hard that it is widely used to cover the surface of buildings and boardwalks, as well as sculpture material. It is easy to polish and keeps its lustre for a long time. It is resistant to friction and pressure. The hardest granite is mined in Northern Europe, Africa, and Brazil. Despite its extremely practical qualities, granite requires proper care, especially in such high-traffic areas as the kitchen. The kitchen provides an aggressive environment for granite. Watch out for acids, like wine or lemon juice, coffee, oils and fats, and eliminate them from the granite surface as soon as possible. Even water may damage the lustre of granite if left there for a few days. Avoid knocking on the stone, using it as a cutting board or a trivet for hot dishes, and do not apply metallic sponges to clean it. There is a wide choice of store-bought chemicals for everyday care, prevention, and polishing. Use them to keep your sophisticated kitchen in the best shape possible.

ERRORS IN JUDGMENT
some joyous note into your everyday life. Just remember that balance is the key to good design, which, in this case, means not to overdo the dramatic: one or two bright spots will be enough to make the room look fresh and interesting.
MULTICOLOUR IS GREAT This is yet another extreme notion, characteristic to a newly fledged amateur designer. Too many contrasts are wearisome for both the eye and the psyche, and a room thus decorated is not the best place for rest and relaxation.
MY FAVOURITE COLOUR EVERYWHERE! Even if you adore the trendy pistachio, lavender, coral, or pink, it is not a good idea to have one of these tones prevail in a room. The excess of your favourite colour will probably turn from the source of joy to the cause for irritation and weariness as soon as in a few months. To avoid such an unfortunate turn of events, try to limit the use of these tones to the easily replaceable accents – rugs, cushions, curtains, etc.

e strive for the best result of our creative efforts when decorating our place of living. We try to make our surroundings beautiful, stylish, and comfortable. Nevertheless, sometimes we overdo it with basing our judgment on the design rules or, on the contrary, do not consider such rules when creating our decor. Both approaches lead to a look that is far from perfect. There are a few most frequently entertained but erroneous notions in the area of interior design.
WALLS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING!
BLIND TREND FOLLOWING
MONOCHROMATIC DECOR IS A SAFE BET
Even if a magazine picture of a well-appointed room has caught your attention, copying it detail by detail is not a good idea. Yes, you will attain a trendy look but the question is will it have that individual quality everyone wants? Hardly. The best way to achieve this goal is to use the picture as a guideline only adding your unique touch and your own taste.

Not so. Ideally, the colour of the walls has to be matched to the existing furniture, and not the other way around. Start with buying the largest and more expensive pieces like seating furniture or a big rug. Base on them your selection of window dressing, paintings, and pictures, as well as lighting fixtures. Choosing wall coverings is the last step in the process; just make sure that your wall paint or wallpaper matches the rest of the decor.
Calm neutral tones may be your choice when it comes to decor because, in our opinion, beige, grey, and brown are the safest colours liked by everyone. Think again – isn’t it going to be dull? The best interior designers teach us not to be afraid of vivid accents that are not signs of bad taste but rather witness to your wish to introduce

Some rooms contain so many small objects that they overshadow the main decor theme. Too many shelves, cabinets, figurines, whatnots, cushions, and souvenirs can easily transform a room into unwanted objects storage. To enjoy the harmony of your decor and to breathe easily, try to free the room from insignificant items and increase its functionality.
FURNITURE SHOULD BE PLACED ALONG THE WALLS If you do not intend to host grand dancing parties, forget the outdated notion of leaving the centre of the room unencumbered by placing all the furniture along the walls. A seating arrangement in the centre of a spacious room can serve as a divider between zones with different functions – for example, between the space for relaxation and the dining space. Zones can also be defined by fish tanks or plant stands. The conclusion drawn from the above advice is this: do not limit your imagination by common solutions but rather think outside the box. Be bold, improvise, and carry out your wildest dreams to make your home comfortable and unique.

A DECORATIVE WATERFALL
A
waterfall made of natural stone may be a great design element in the style of your home. Imagine the quiet murmur of water sliding down a granite, slate, or marble plunger. These peaceful sounds together with watching the play of light on stones is a great way to relax. Natural stone is the best material for a waterfall that is intended to be a focus of attention in a home. It is devoid of problems that may plague its artificial counterparts, does not require special care, and is not affected by flowing water. The waterfall can be placed in a corner or by a wall. The use of natural stone in room waterfalls offers a great variety of textures and colours. You can also install decorative lighting in the bowl. An evaporator will create a foggy effect as well as play a role of a humidifier.
CONSTRUCTION and MATERIALS Room waterfalls are built along more or less the same format. The main difference is the construction of the plunger. You can always find the type matching your decorative style. The plunger can be made just in the shape of regular steps, but can also resemble a granite cliff, or the interior of a sea grotto. Waterfalls made of marble look great with ancient style columns and low relief. Quartz slate steps in room waterfalls have a very decorative look because of the stone’s own tendency to refract light, which adds whimsical patterns to water flowing over them. The use of the upscale granite called stone bark helps create an effect of a “wild cliff”.
INSTALLATION and CARE The best way to have your room waterfall assembled in your home is to assign the task to a professional who knows all the rules of the trade. Should you decide on a do-it-yourself way, remember that a waterfall cannot be placed too close to electrical appliances, paintings, and furniture (no closer than 30 cm). Try to place it away from direct sunlight that promotes slime forming on the water surface. Change water in your waterfall monthly using, if possible, distilled water because regular tap water usually contains lime that will promote a whitish film on the water surface as soon as after just one week of operating. The correct installation will enable your waterfall to function impeccably while timely maintenance will ensure that this decorative accent stays beautiful and healthy.

PET HOUSES AS A DECOR ELEMENT
P
roblems with maintaining a normal home existence for pets that some people experience often result from the lack of correct organization of their space.
It is especially complicated when the pet is very young – this is when you find it runs on your sheers and loose threads sticking out of your upholstery or risk to step on the tail or the paw of the new inhabitant of your dwelling. These are just a few of the problems of the lives of urban apartment pets and their owners. The problem is avoidable. You can set up your little friend with care and comfort and save the integrity of your decor with the help of a pet house. The majority of apartment pets are either cats or small and medium size dogs. Pet shops and department stores carry all kinds of objects that improve the life of a pet who stays inside the apartment; among them are pet houses, play places, and nurseries for mommies and their newborns. Larger dogs need a separate room but if this is impossible, they will do with a sleeping cushion in the general style of the home decor so that it becomes a design element. Pets of smaller sizes – or rather their designconscious owners - are luckier because the variety of items offered as their dwelling or playground is much wider and allows the owner to choose the one that matches the style of the rest of the apartment and becomes a decorative object.
