WHITE LUSTRE – AN IDEAL SOLUTION FOR THE KITCHEN

C

lassic white kitchens with a glossy façade – the photos of which are amply distributed on the Internet – are more than just a traditional attribute of the interior. Despite the large selection of creative solutions for the kitchen furniture and wall finishes, owners of homes and apartments prefer the white colour. It is no surprise that the most elegant parts of any interior are associated with white or its various shades.

ABUNDANCE OF COLOURS Of course, this may seem odd, but white, glossy kitchens are offered with a significantly greater choice selection than any other tone. It is sufficient to simply pay attention to the colour of milk or the lily. This is just a small fraction of the possibilities when organizing a kitchen space.

IDEAL HARMONY WITH OTHER ELEMENTS White can work perfectly with any colour gamma. If you take a look at real photographs, you will see that no boundaries exist. Absolutely any design can incorporate respective amounts of wisely used white with lustre.

POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE OVERALL ENERGY OF THE INTERIOR The white colour is calm and suitable for perception. Even if you get tired of singletone colours and would like to add variety to the design, it is sufficient to choose a bright highlight. The tones will instantaneously behave differently.

PRACTICALITY OF COLOURS Although white surfaces are prone to stains, it is much easier than it seems to care for a light set because white is always associated with cleanliness. A small stain noticeable only to the owner is usually invisible to the eyes of guests.

FUNCTIONALITY The tones discussed in this article are suitable for modern and conservative styled interiors. Even in the gothic style, where primarily dark tones dominate, it is appropriate to add a bit of light colour for inspiration. In organizing an interior, the white colour can be encountered in numerous projects of outstanding designers. White colours in the interior of the kitchen are an opportunity to bring to life new and creative ideas.

the entire bathroom in an original style, you can come up with a combination of classic and original tendencies. Developers have long wanted to replace the smooth tiles with textured elements but a rough surface does not cause such awe amongst customers, especially when they think of the cleaning process. Today, 3D effects are used in place of textures. It is worthwhile to note that they look more effective and help create a wonderful interior design.

WHICH EFFECT SHOULD I CHOOSE? With every year, quilted panels are growing in demand and popularity. Customers often choose tiles with the effect of a “quilt.” There is vast variety of options to choose from; a diamond-shaped 3D or flat tile, sparkly elements for decoration, or you can choose a panel that will represent a segment of the “quilt.” The latter option is easy to assemble and creates a smooth, full blanket on the wall.

QUILTED PANELS IN THE INTERIOR – MODERN CAPABILITIES OF THE CERAMIC TILE

W

e are used to seeing quilts on soft furniture, ottomans and chairs; we are starting to accept this trend on clothing offered by modern designers. However, the most original novelty is quilt fabrics on the walls. An original option is offered by designers of the ceramic tile; using it as a border will truly imitate the effect of a quilt.

Quilted tiles are offered in many colours and sized. The form of these tiles is generally standard – diamond-shaped with rounded edges. In any case, choosing the 3D option will add comfort and softness to the interior.

QUILTED TILES AND PANELS Many of us are tired of the smooth and shiny surface of the ceramic tile – we want to see something new and original. Designers do not protest such wishes of the clients and create new, interesting, and unusual collections. A unique ceramic tile or a collection imitating various textures are encountered increasingly more often in interiors. If you cannot commit to designing

A collection of quilted tiles will perfectly supplement a marble floor, golden elements, or a bright décor. Often, such collections are used to create rooms in an aristocratic style and they work effectively in the minimalistic and classic styles. With the help of the 3D tile, the walls of the kitchen, bathroom or any other room can be decorated by using the tiles to outline the perimeter or even the whole wall. However, keep in mind that it is harder to care for quilt tiles as compared to regular smooth surfaces but easier as compared to porous or textured tiles.

fashion which served as a catalyst for this unique fabric to be recognized in the world of interior design.

PROPERTIES OF VELVET If the fabric is made exclusively from natural silk threads, then it possesses unique qualities. Being quite thick, velvet preserves its good quality for many years. Furthermore, it is hygroscopic and thus, is capable of absorbing a significant amount of dampness. Natural velvet without chemical fibres does not cause allergic reactions. It cannot be electrified, does not attract dust, and perfectly assembles in draperies. Moreover, velvet materials serve for a long time, do not lose their appearance, do not shrink following laundry, keep their form and warmth, and do not wrinkle easily.

VELVET AS AN EMBLEM OF LUXURY

V

elvet, like many centuries ago, is still considered a royal fabric today. It deserves such a reputation as it looks luxurious and expensive. Therefore, you can create variety in your interior in the following way; for example, you can use warm and dense fabric in creating a background in the rooms but give special attention to velvet in the interior. Let`s further discuss this unique fabric that is capable of bringing warmth to your home and creating an attractive and slightly dramatic atmosphere.

6

ALL ABOUT HOME

Velvet – the material with dense, short fabric formed on the basis of natural silk or chemical fibre.

FROM A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE The homeland of velvet is Italy of the XIII century; in this period, the country began producing velvet cloth. Creating this fabric was quite a tedious and expensive process; the most valued velvet was made of silk threads. In the XIX century velvet once again became popular thanks to high

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Without a doubt, an interior that incorporates this aristocratic material in its design will look enriched and even in a minimalistic interior it will create an inimitable bohemian atmosphere.

VELVET IN THE INTERIOR Velvet, as one of the most demanding fabrics, is quite difficult to handle; hence, it is incorporated in products with a minimum of recesses, hinges, and joints. In the interior, velvet can be used to cover furniture, tailoring draperies and bed sheets, covers for decorative pillows, and finishing walls.

UPHOLSTERED HEADBOARD: It is more than appropriate to use velvet as a cover for an upholstered headboard or walls behind the lodge. The fabric will not produce a static effect; consequently, it will not attract dust and you will breathe absolutely freely in your sleep. A velvet headboard decorated with a figurative design is a very appealing, luxurious and stylish option. Choose natural tones of velvet: wine-red, cinnamon, grey, cream, cobalt or natural

green as these highlight your taste and sense of style. Accordingly, velvet in bright colours and unnatural tones should not exist in the interior as it creates a circus-like environment and can look distasteful.

HUMBLE LUXURY Soft furniture of even the simplest laconic forms becomes more elegant and of a higher rank if it is covered in velvet. If you are in search of an object that will uphold the warmth in your home, we recommend a velvet couch, ottoman, or mini-sofa.

VELVET SHINE IN ACCENTS Velvet objects look very aesthetically pleasing but their price is high as well. As an elegant accent in the interior, try to use a small object made of velvet: a banquette at the foot of the bed, decorative cushions, pouf for legs or near the dressing table.

SOFT FURNISHINGS Perhaps the title of the brightest use of velvet in the interior can be given to the sewing of draperies. Ample fabric is used for this purpose as the windows should be formed with dense folds that fall to the floor; otherwise the velvet portiere does not seem as effective. Windows richly draped with velvet is an evident luxury – it creates an unforgettable effect. Velvet cooperates well with materials of a similar rank: fur, wood, leather, and metals.

HOW TO USE IMAGES IN THE INTERIOR: 3 Non-standard Methods

sychologists are certain that it is absolutely necessary to periodically change the environment that we live in. In this article, we will set aside the standard re-painting of walls or choosing new wallpaper – there are other options of original and affordable changes.

ARTWORK IN THE INTERIOR: To incorporate this element in your design, it is unnecessary to purchase expensive artworks; the most important factor is your taste and inspirational ideas. For example, you can simply choose a suitable image from the photo-bank Fotolia: it has a base of over 20 million files. You print this image on a poster, special paper, or a board of any

8

size. The price of the quality in the photobank depends on the size of the image and accordingly, varies from a few dollars to several hundred.

PHOTO-WALLPAPER IN THE INTERIOR: Transforming your personal space with the help of images from the photo-bank can be taken to a larger scale. Here, we are talking about wallpaper. A personal tropical island, a medieval library, an exotic garden, a gloomy forest, or the ocean depths – you can create any such illusion without an extensive search. In the photo-bank, you can find just about anything. In any case, you will have to

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

confirm the size of the wallpaper with the photo-bank specialists.

PORTRAITS ON THE WALLS: Let’s not forget that sometimes, small and bright accents give our interior a particular charm. This can include collages made in themes that bring our ideas and hobbies to life.

COMMEMORATIVE CARDS: These can be depictions of absolutely anything. You can even create a themed holiday décor – for Easter or Christmas. These can be thought of as “temporary exhibitions” in your home. The options and ideas are endless; you just have to reveal your imagination and decide on the sizes!

CORK – GOOD LOOKING AND NATURAL

L

ike all the natural materials, cork has its own unique pattern that varies from one sheet to the next; it is created by many cracks and veins. This makes cork a popular decorative material. Besides being aesthetically pleasing, cork possesses great working qualities. Its honeycomb structure quickly restores it after any physical impact making cork virtually timeless. It is a scientific fact that in 100 years cork wears off by a mere 5%. Natural cork is sufficiently resistant to chemical influences; therefore, neither acetic acid nor chlorine can damage cork covering or modify its qualities. It is also resistant to excessive humidity, ultraviolet rays, mold, and

fungi. Even rodents avoid cork. It is one of the most long-lasting and practical covering materials. Cork, like all the natural materials, helps create positive microclimate where not only healthy people but also those suffering from allergic reactions and respiratory problems can feel good. The explanation is that cork is a natural antiseptic and that it does not draw dust or absorb smells, including cigarette smoke. This makes it possible and even desirable to use it not only in regular rooms but in the rooms with complicated conditions as well – for example, in the kitchen. Cork is an excellent absorber of noise - no

wonder it’s being used as a covering in recording studios. It also provides a high level of thermal insulation. It is common knowledge among the specialists that the air temperature in rooms with cork-covered walls is about six degrees above average in winter and the same amount lower, in summer. Cork is an excellent decorative material for any style rooms because it looks great in combination with other materials. It is also simple to install. Of course, this wonderful material does not come cheap but it is a great investment that will pay off in the long run in both financial and labour aspects because it keeps its looks and functionality for many years.

WINDOW DRESSING

dressing blend with the walls: your curtains need to be either a lighter or a darker tone than the colour of the walls. They should also match the upholstery, especially considering that you expect your furniture to serve you for a number of years. When selecting the texture of the fabric used for draperies, base your decision on the upholstery, bedsheets, and cushion covers in the room.

– THE RIGHT CHOICE

Solid fabrics match their surroundings much better than patterned ones and they can be interesting by their colour or texture. If you still prefer printed fabrics, you will need to pay more attention not only to the colour, but also to the pattern and size of the print. Do not get carried away in terms of variety of colours and textures of the curtains for a smaller room. In this case, select the main fabric that matches the rest of the room even though some fabrics may still contrast with the main one, adding some interest to the decor. The style of curtains and sheers is as important a consideration as their fabric. For a dwelling with high ceilings and wide windows use long curtains with pleats two-and-a-half to three times wider than the length of the rod. If the ceilings are not too high, do not use gathered draping and valances. As always, the main rule of design is not to overdo it. Even the simplest of tricks, including an overthrow, a knot, or a pleat may transform not only your window but the whole look of the room.

W

hen planning decor changes for your home, remember the tremendous role window dressing plays. Often, people delay the process of curtain selection to the last minute without even realizing that it can either make or break the overall design. No one doubts the rrole of make-up in highlighting certain features while concealing others. The fabric you select for your curtains plays exactly the same role in decorating a room. When making your decision, do not neglect even the smallest detail – everything is important, including

12

ALL ABOUT HOME

the size of the window and its location, the height of the ceiling, and the general decor of the room. It is a well-known fact that contrasting horizontal stripes visually widens the room while vertical stripes make the room look taller. Cold blues and grays visually cool the room down while red and maroon-browns seem to warm it up. Vivid curtains may seem like a good idea at first and considered a bright spot in your decor but after a while you may get tired of them. The following rule can help you avoid a common error of having your window

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

If you strive for something unusual, try layered sheers. Don’t worry about the number of layers – you can use as many as you like as long as they are made of semi-transparent fabric except for one, the heaviest, to be used as a night shade. The principle to guide you when combining lightweight and heavyweight fabrics is to keep the right balance of harmony and contrast. You can create unusual window dressings by joining together squares of different colours of the same fabric. Attach these curtains to the rod using rings and clasps. The weight of the elements has to be the same thoughout. Such window dressings will become an interesting decor element. If you are still not sure of your choices, consult a professional. .

It belongs in country homes and apartments of the Victorian Era with a chimney. Interior: It can be incorporated in essentially any interior given that the style of the fireplace and that of the interior do not contradict each other. In the classical option, the fireplace portal is made of marble or stone; above it lays a mirror or a portrait of the homeowner. Modern fireplaces can be placed not only by the wall, but also in the centre of the space as an element of art or décor. Such fireplaces are especially applicable for modern interiors in the loft style.

2. BIO-FIREPLACES Pros: Easy installation. Generally, this fireplace is sold in its ready state and only a small assembly process is required. It is unnecessary to construct a chimney and an additional ventilation system. The second advantage of bio-fireplaces is the fact that they are ecologically-friendly. They do not release toxic substances and carbon dioxide does not accumulate. Lastly, they are mobile. They can effortlessly be moved to different places in the interior thus easily changing the interior décor. Cons: The price of the material and the care it requires. A bio-fireplace is more of an element of décor rather than a heat source. Interior: With the emergence of new technologies and trends in the bio-fireplace industry, new variations enter the market: wall, stand-alone, and built-in. Bio-fireplaces are used in houses, apartments, offices and any other interior; even terraces.

3. ELECTRIC FIREPLACES Pros: Suitable for any interior. Cons: No live fire. Interior: Very effective accents in every interior.

FOR ADVERTISEMENTS CALL (416) 477-6107

Note that an electric fireplace works best when all of the other options fail. Furthermore, it is much safer than fireplaces with live fire.

4. ARTIFICIAL FIREPLACES Pros: Currently, the latest trend in interior design. Cons: “Eats up space” as it is not a functional element. However, some designers use this space not just for creating a console, but also as a storage space for books, souvenirs, and other items. This is a brave and stylish option. Interior: Artificial fireplaces can be made in any style and material, including the simplest painted plasterboard. Popular options include a mirror background and candles – simple and affordable. The trendiest of artificial fireplaces is an antique portal. Whether they are used as decoration or as a console, such fireplaces become a key art-object in the interior that make it more interesting. From an economical point of view, this is worth an investment; over time, the iron portal with its unique accents will become only more expensive!

H

ello, my name is Natalia Slobidker! I am a professional full-time realtor. I specialize in real estate pre-sale preparations, sales strategy development and keeping real estate transaction risks to a minimum. My mission: minimum stress – maximum profit, in any real estate transaction.

5 REASONS TO BUY A HOME IN KESWICK For example: sive range of services, such as shopping malls, restaurants, entertainment facilities, and of course, a diverse range of schools – including Catholic schools and schools with French immersion. To top it off, easy access to this vibrant city north of Toronto makes it a favourite for travelers.

A year ago, when I would bring up the name of this city, most people asked what it was and what’s so special about it. Today its real estate market is one of the most turbulent ones; houses that used to be approximately $370,000 two years ago are now selling for $660,000-680,000. This is a very dramatic increase, even for a period as turbulent as this one.

Regardless, the ratio of cost and payoff remains very reasonable in comparison with other cities.

So, what’s so special about this quiet, little town?

The majority of those who use the market are families with children, looking for a place they can all live comfortably and settle down for a sufficiently long period of time. Usually, this means a detached home. For this type of buyer, it is just as important to have relative ease of access to work and a multifaceted environment for raising children.

1. LOCATION (IT’S ALWAYS THE LOCATION!) The city is located 40 minutes north of Toronto, just 15 minutes north of the city of Newmarket. The 404 highway was extended to it last summer, offering you direct access to downtown Toronto, and the nearest GO station is just 15 minutes away. All of this makes the city very attractive for those who work in downtown Toronto.

3. INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

The local real estate market can still surprise one with its reasonably-priced detached homes. Moreover, the city boasts an impres-

4. ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES FOR OUTDOOR RECREATION... WITHOUT EVER LEAVING YOUR HOMETOWN As previously mentioned, Georgina is a growing group of communities that, in addition to Keswick, includes Sutton, Pefferlaw, Jackson’s Point, Udora, and Port Bolster. These towns offer a unique balance of the comfort of urban life and access to pristine nature. Their residents can enjoy an idyllic rural life free from the hustle and bustle of the big city without compromise of personal conveniences. Those who choose Keswick as their home have numerous opportunities available to

2. ALL POSSIBLE TYPES OF REAL ESTATE Despite being such a small area real estate prices in Georgina, a part of which is the Keswick, range from a few hundred thousand to several million. Consequently, the real estate market in this region meets the needs of customers of the most diverse requirements and varying levels of wealth. You can find everything, ranging from modest townhouses to multimillion, forestsurrounded estates with lake access.

them: for active and passive recreation and entertainment on Lake Simcoe, as well as in the nearby provincial parks and recreation areas. Those who live here often say, “my house – my cottage.” And it really is: why get a separate cottage when your house is often within walking distance from the lake? Proponents of a healthy lifestyle will appreciate the proximity and variety of local farms offering fresh produce grown with their own hands. It is worth to note separately that Georgina is known as the ice fishing capital of

Canada. Therefore, when the cold hits the town, thousands of fishermen will gather here and try their luck; driven by a justifiable hope in getting a haul from an impressive range of fish.

5. CLOSE TO EVERYTHING YOU NEED... BUT NOT TOO CLOSE Keswick is a perfect place for those who want “the best of all worlds.” This unique city can offer something for each and every prospective buyer: for those who appreciate comfort and privacy; for those looking for entertainment; for those who cannot do without the comfort of a modern city; and for those who need to be close to nature. • Availability of enduring infrastructure • Convenient transport • Proximity to a big-city business center • Proximity to natural bodies of water The reason behind the explosion of construction and an unprecedented rise in prices in this area is its perfect mix of all key property values. Since these areas have

only begun realizing their potential, I am able to estimate that this upward trend in prices will continue for many years and that those who buy a modestly-priced house here today may very well find themselves the owners of million dollar property in several years’ time. Whether you are interested in this wonderful place or in a professional analysis of another potential place to live, call me at 416-333-7418.

BECOME A PRO –

or Six Secrets of the “Interiors on Magazine Covers”

D

ecorating an interior is simultaneously a unique and tiresome experience. Choosing furniture, properly displaying it, and adding the proper décor – All About Home found out how to do this properly and effectively. Is it really possible to transform an ordinary interior into one off the cover of magazines? Indeed it is – the secret lies in the proper organization of the interior, bright accessories, and of course, the miniscule details. To help you effectively redesign the living room, we chose six design “tricks” that will enable you to organize your interior into a luxurious and unique space.

1. EFFECTIVE CHANDELIER The chandelier is not simply a bright accent in the interior; it is a means of making the interior seem visually grand. If you have a short ceiling, you have to be more careful in your selection. A very large model will make your interior seem significantly smaller. A chandelier with transparent pendants, crystal or glass is the ideal option. It will make your interior light and elegant.

2. THE RUG IS IMPORTANT There are many methods of unifying the interior, but perhaps the simplest is with the use of a rug. Choose the design that best suits your interior and on top, place a comfortable couch for the whole family to enjoy or a coffee

table. Finally, add accessories in such a way that the rug will be in the centre of the space.

3. THE RULE OF THREE According to this rule, it is best to use objects of the same tone in odd amounts: 1, 3, and so on. An interior organized in this manner is balanced. Besides this guideline, there is the “rule of the pyramid” that applies to objects located in three different height planes. Both of these rules provide guidelines to a modern and stylish interior.

4. THE HIGHER THE DRAPERIES, THE BETTER One of the most common mistakes in designing the interior is hanging draperies immediately above the window. This makes the interior seem dramatically smaller; it is better to display the draperies as high as possible. This will help make the walls seem taller and will add character to any interior.

5. MIXTURE OF VARIOUS TEXTURES Fur pillows on the couch, a blanket made of sacks, or window draperies of light silk – such diversity in textures make the interior memorable, interesting, and inviting. Texture can be added with the help of wall décor by combining various accessories: artwork, posters, pots, or plaster busts of animals.

6. ART-OBJECTS Artwork makes any interior convincing, especially if we are talking about paintings. One large painting can be displayed on an empty painted wall even in a small room. This visual trick will add elegance and style to the interior.

A ROOM TO GROW WITH

W

For the window treatment, we had a custom valance made from an adorable Kravet fabric with a gentle curve and charming box pleats. For room darkening, a blackout waterfall Roman shade was installed behind the valence. I often recommend this look to my clients as machinemade blinds are more durable and easier to operate compared to custom fabric. Further, it is more cost efficient.

hen decorating a room for a young adult, it is of greatest importance to create a multifunctional space. The bedroom is a key space in a teenager’s development; so much happens here: studying, reading, music, hobbies, hanging out with friends, fashion shows, sleepovers and quiet time. The bedroom is a place of their own that offers comfort and functions as an extension of their personality. A successful layout for a teenager’s bedroom involves creating several zones for the various activities that will take place such as sleeping, studying, dressing, spending time with friends and displaying prized possessions. When my client, 13 year old Jessica, asked for a room featuring blue and purple and for it to be feminine yet not too “girly,” I knew we had a fun project where we should infuse colour patterns and textures. In our choice of wallpaper, the winner was from JF Fabrics – we used it as inspiration to pull the room together. The wallpaper is the “wow!” factor in the room and is a great starting point since it has several colours and textures. When organizing an interior, having a source of inspiration will ensure harmony in space and that every element serves a unique purpose for the room. The inspiration can come from fabric, a rug, piece of art, or as in our case, wallpaper.

We added a twist to the classic style on the walls; adding a chair rail, painting the bottom portion white and wallpapering the upper portion to create a dramatic effect. The ceiling was kept a classic white and we installed a beautiful, whimsical shell chandelier. When designing bedroom for clients, I always use the bed as a reference point as it is the focus of the room. In this room, we placed the bed across from the doorway near the far wall. At its feet, we placed a bench which added a pop of royal blue in an ikat-influenced onion pattern. To glam up the work area, we added a custom cut mirror to the desk and installed glamorous crystal knobs. The client owned an antique arm chair that was not being used so we painted and reupholstered it which added character to this element. On the wall above the desk we installed a shelf and corkboard which became a home to her collectables. The window’s existing bench seat was finished with a stylish croc vinyl in metallic grey and then complimented with an eclectic mix of pillows of different colours and patterns that all co-ordinate with the wallpaper scheme.

We are delighted with the results of our project – it is a fun and vibrant room yet classic and elegant. It will surely grow with her throughout her teenage years.

TIPS: n This colourful chic teen room has lots of personality and charm.

Create a hangout zone – a generous bench seat with oversized pillows for a cozy place to read. n Study Zone – we topped this desk with a mirror and embellished it with crystal knobs and paired it with a pretty re-upholstered antique chair and a big bulletin board to display her treasures. (1. this is not a tip and 2. it is a repeat of what was aforementioned) n A resting spot – a camelback upholstered bed in linen neutralizes the colorful accents and creates a luxurious bed. n Showcasing her interests and personality with this simple storage solution was easy. The classic Malm shelf from Ikea creates a perfect spot for all of her collectibles.

Bring a new meaning to beige. It has a diapason from grey and green to latte.

Ecru is a richer tone than ivory or beige; hence, if you do not want to use bright accents, then you can combine ecru with beige to create an elegant colour gamma.

THE YELLOW COLOUR

1

If you like yellow but you do not want to make the interior excessively bright, mix your favourite tone of yellow half on half with white and apply to the walls. This base colour will be your favourite while its richness will not be overdone.

Yellow is a great option for accents – this can be a favourite rug, vase or lampshade. Combine the colour of the wall (part of walls or only the front walls) with bright accents and the yellow interior will play with new colours.

3

Yellow walls work best in an interior that uses a lot of natural light. Dark rooms can be decorated with yellow slightly mixed with dark or grey tones.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TONE

E

very colour has a vast palette of tones. Depending on the tone, the new colour can either renew the interior or make it melancholy and gloomy. How do you choose the proper tone? Consult the advice of professional designers below.

THE PURPLE COLOUR

1 2 3

Give preference to purple shades that have more blue than pink.

A rich purple tone is best used as an accent; otherwise, it can apply “pressure” and make the interior seem visually smaller. As a general rule, the colour on the walls looks darker than the colour did as a sample. Keep this in mind when selecting the ideal tone in the store. Lavender is effectively used as a base – to be used as an

accent, it has to be in combination only with white.

THE BEIGE COLOUR

1

A beige tone can have a green, gold or brown base. When choosing the right option, compare them amongst each other but also with white – this way, you will never go wrong in your decision.

2

2

Aim for tones that are hard to distinguish as a single colour – peachy-pink or orange-coral. These hybrid colours are especially interesting due to their rich and soft qualities.

3

Combine terracotta colours with equally rich tones to make the interior even more intense: luscious gold, purple-blue, olive, or bright peach.

4

Use a rich tone such as hazel or rust to create a dramatic effect.

With the beige tone, it is easy to cross the line and create a boring interior. You can avoid this effect by using various textures and designs; a coffee table covered in leather, a bright coral armchair, or a large rug. All of these elements will make the interior rich and complete.

3

When you are looking at samples of beige tones, choose the colour that is one shade paler than the one

The Final Touch Think about curtain “hardware” the same way you might think about how jewelry adds finishing touches to a favourite outfit; a bit of flair, a touch of sophistication or an accent that completes the look. With thousands of design choices in a wide variety of finishes, there is no limit to how creative you can be with your curtains. Whether you want your hardware to stand out or create a subtle addition, ensure that it is in harmony with the rest of the interior. The type of curtains you pick will determine how they will hang from the rod and what your heading will be. Rings are a simple and classic approach that can adapt to many styles – they come in a variety of designs and finishes. Large wooden rings have a classic appearance while modern and funky designs are open to interpretation and experimentation with, for example, eclectic designs. Other styles such as grommet or tab top curtains will hang directly from the rod.

W

hen you choose curtains for your windows, you choose a statement for your room. After all, curtains are a mandatory and bold addition to the interior – not only do they need to match the atmosphere and style of the room, but they can also play a starring role in your design. Curtains dress your windows in much that same way that you dress yourself with a personal style and image that is uniquely yours.

cabinets. Antiqued bronze might work and relate to pieces of furniture or art in a classic room design. We believe that you can give your curtains a truly unique look with finials: those unique designs at the ends of some curtain rods. You can find finials already attached to rods or you can add them to create your own original look in the space. Our company offers you a vast array of stylish finial options and we source from companies like Alendel Fabrics. Today we can find hundreds of design options from intricate twisting wrought iron to chunky geometric designs in wood or metal and even glass globes. Again, it is all about picking designs and finishes that work with the flow and style of your room. Using hardware – a necessity in the home – to accent your style is a great way to add originality to your finished look. Be creative with the finishes and styles of the hardware to create a room that is uniquely yours.

Curtain rods come in a variety of materials and styles as well. Metal rods tend to lend themselves to modern room designs, but with the array of finishes available today, you can experiment to find your look. By matching the finish of your curtain rod to an element in the room, you can complete your style. Pewter or brushed nickel might match the hardware on the kitchen

T

he size and shape of the room sometimes feel wrong to the homeowner. Various colour and tone combinations used on walls, floors, and/or ceilings, may help correct the problem. • To visually narrow the room and lower its ceiling, create the so-called tunnel effect. To achieve it, use a light-toned floor covering and paint the back wall of the room a soft pastel colour while coating the ceiling and other walls in a darker hue. • A small room of nine feet height or more creates an uncomfortable feeling. To correct the situation, paint both the floor and the ceiling in darker tones and use lighter hues for walls.

32

SECRET EFFECTS OF COLOUR • A dark-coloured floor ideally matches light walls and the ceiling and makes the room look more spacious. To complete the decor, use dark furniture and vivid accessories.

• A room where the walls, ceiling and floor are painted in the same dark colour looks shapeless.

• Dark walls and floors combined with a light ceiling will create a cellar effect.

• In order to visually narrow the room but make the ceiling look higher, paint the walls on both sides a little bit darker while leaving the back wall and the ceiling lighter.

• To correct an uncomfortable impression created by a narrow room, paint the far wall in a dark colour and the side walls in calm and lighter tones..

• Remember that a cool palette visually enhances the space. If you wish to make the room look more spacious, use lighter colours on everything – the walls, the floor, and the ceiling. On the other hand, too many calm colours in the room may make it look bland. • To visually decrease the dimensions of the room, paint the walls dark while leaving the floor and the ceiling light.

AROMATIZE YOUR HOME WITH ESSENTIAL OILS! Twelve Easy Ideas AROMA OF FRESHNESS: Before vacuuming, drop a small amount of lavender oil on a cotton ball and let your vacuum suck it in. The delicate Provencelike scent will follow your vacuum cleaner all along the way.

DEODORIZING YOUR REFRIGERATOR: Pour a couple of drops of a lavender and lemon oil mix onto an aroma stone diffuser (which is basically a porous clay brick) or a piece of gauze and place on a shelf in the fridge door. Replace essential oils regularly, more often if gauze is used instead of a brick.

DEODORIZING YOUR TRASH CAN Wash and dry your trash can. Drop a small amount of lavender and tea tree oil mix on

an aroma stone, a piece of gauze, or a cotton ball, and place on the bottom of the can.

REFRESHING YOUR MICROWAVE OVEN: Pour three drops of a lemon and mint oil mix into a microwaveable container of water. Place the container into your oven and microwave on high for three minutes.

REFRESHING YOUR WASHROOMS: Install a small shelf that would hold two to three cookie-sized aroma stones. Drop on them some lavender, ylang-ylang, or pine nut oil. Add essential oils often – at least once a week. This simple procedure will not only fill the room with a delicate aroma but will create a healthy atmosphere as well.

AROMATIZING BED LINENS: Adding essential oils during laundry is becoming a popular way to add freshness to bed linens. Do not limit your choice of scents. There are two ways of doing it: the more common being placing a terrycloth mitt into your dryer together with the freshly-laundered linens, after dropping on it some lavender, mint, rose, or eucalyptus oil. Actually, you can use any essential oil whose fragrance you prefer. If you iron your items after drying them, you can add the same oils to the water you pour into the steam compartment. Since essential oils are not greasy they will not damage your bed linens.

CLEANING AND DISINFECTING SURFACES: Add 30 drops of a lavender, tea tree and/ or lemon mix to 1 litre of alcoholic vinegar.

Shake well to blend. This simple and inexpensive solution effectively cleans and disinfects all surfaces regardless of their material.

ELIMINATING LIME IN SINKS, BATHTUBS, POTS AND KETTLES: Use the aforementioned solution for cleaning surfaces. Alcoholic vinegar is the best for eliminating lime. It is more effective when heated; therefore, you can safely add the solution to the kettle of boiling water and leave it for up to an hour. Thanks to the essential oils in it your kettle will be in perfect condition, and all the bacteria – gone!

ROOM DEODORIZER: Fill a spray bottle with water and add a few drops of mint oil. Shake to blend and spray around the room.

GETTING RID OF INSECTS: Instead of using foul-smelling insecticides that are harmful for human and pets’ health, spray lavender, cedar, or eucalyptus oils into the air.

NO MORE MOTHS: Drop cedar and lavender oil (five drops of each) onto an aroma stone, a wooden cube, or a piece of gauze before placing it into a fabric pouch. Place on a shelf in your closet or linen chest. Replace regularly.

GOOD-BYE ANTS: Add five drops of lavender oil and ten drops of peppermint oil into a spray bottle containing 250 ml of water. Spray along the ants’ preferred routes, especially in the spot where you suspect the anthill to be. Repeat several times a day for a few days.

IS YOUR WATER SAFE?

C

anada has one of the safest water supplies in the world. However, it is virtually impossible to know what is in tap water because its quality may be different in different places, seasons, or even houses. Municipal water treatment systems – as sophisticated as they are – cannot deal with all of the contaminants or even test for them.

Pitchers usually hold between six to twelve cups of water. Larger dispensers hold up to eighteen cups and have a spigot for easy pouring. The disadvantages of this filter type are that the filtration process in them is slow, the amount of water that can be filtered at one time is limited, and the filters need to be changed frequently thus overshadowing the system’s economic advantages.

The phenomenon of bottled drinking water is growing fast because many people believe bottled water is safer or healthier than tap water or they just prefer the taste and convenience of bottled drinking water. Nevertheless, because the bottled water industry is not regulated, it is important to know what we buy and drink. Research shows that nearly 40 percent of all bottled water is actually re-processed municipal water. Many manufacturers claim that their water is “glacier water” or “mountain spring water,” which may or may not be true.

COUNTERTOP. Countertop filters can filter larger amounts of water, are easy to install and do not clog easily. They are connected to the tap with a pipe or a tube. The disadvantages are that countertop filters do not always fit certain types of faucets, especially in older homes, and you need an additional outlay of funds to purchase the right hardware, their look is not very appealing, and they may clutter the countertop.

The best way to assure that the water you drink is what it seems is the filter. Filtered drinking water from your tap or well is the safest, healthiest, and least expensive way to go. There are various methods of tap water filtration, and we are going to discuss the most popular of them. PITCHERS AND DISPENSERS. These are the least expensive and easiest to use.

36

ALL ABOUT HOME

FAUCET MOUNTED. These filters are simple in both use and installation – just remove the aerator and attach the filter directly to the faucet. Faucet mounted filters are convenient and can produce a large amount of filtered water. Most have a valve that allows you to switch between filtered and unfiltered water. The disadvantage is that faucet mounted filters sometimes clog, leak, or break. Another drawback is that this type usually slows the flow of water.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

UNDER SINK. This water filter type is great for filtering a lot of water without cluttering the countertop or sink faucet area. Because it is hidden, it does not offend the eye of the aesthetically concerned homeowner. It is economical because the replacement filters usually last months longer than most faucet-mounted filters. There are a few disadvantages though: these filters are more expensive, they take up cabinet space and are much harder to install – therefore, you can hardly perform it as a do-it-yourself project – you will need a plumber to attach it to into an existing water pipe. REFRIGERATOR. Some of the newer refrigerator models provide filters with a combination of water purification methods that produce tasty water. Besides, they are convenient and also offer the advantage of producing ice cubes. WHOLE HOUSE. This kind is the most convenient because the filter is installed directly into the main water line. They filter all the water in the house, including in the kitchen and bathrooms, removing bad odors and taste. The disadvantage is that this type of filter is the most expensive and requires professional installation. On the other hand, the filters are only changed every 3 to 7 years, compared to every 6 to 12 months for the other types of water filters.

SPOTLIGHTS

S

potlights are small fixtures used for either general lighting or illumination of certain parts of the room. They can be used anywhere – in living rooms and bedrooms, kitchens and hallways, in residential places and offices, swimming pools and restaurants. Spotlights have many advantages over larger light fixtures and play an important role in creating stylish decor. In the area of use spotlights fall into two categories: decorative and functional. Functional lamps ensure the needed level of illumination while decorative, especially those that have reflective built-in elements, serve mostly as decor features. Usually spotlights use energy saving, halogen, or LED bulbs. Spotlights with halogen bulbs are typically quite small while the bulb’s longevity exceeds that of a regular incandescent bulb three times. Often, spotlights may have moveable parts and are popular for installation in drop ceilings because the angle of the light beam can be changed.

ADVANTAGES CONCENTRATION OF ILLUMINATION. Accentuating a certain spot or a special object becomes easy with the use of a potlight supplied with a device that can turn the light in the right direction. MOISTURE PROOFING. Many types of spotlights come in a waterproof aluminum case making them safe for use in high-moisture places like bath houses, bathrooms and saunas. SMALL DIMENSIONS. Huge ceiling-hung chandeliers that “swallow” a considerable part of visual space have long become the thing of the past. Today, spotlights are the way to go. These tiny devices are especially popular for suspended ceilings because they create a cozy atmosphere, are easy on the eye, and favourably modify visual space. ECONOMY. Many people think that spotlights are an expensive proposition but it is not so in the long run. Such fixtures pay off very fast due to considerable energy savings and extended use (a potlight may last up to 4000 hours). CONVENIENT PLACEMENT. Spotlights will help improve the surroundings by easily becoming an integral part of any decor. Their design allows installing them into furniture, on the staircase, on any wall, or in a ceiling.

Therefore, the colours used when decorating a nursery are extremely important for your child’s psychological state. Of course, it is always advisable to listen to what professional psychologists have to say about this but you can also receive some help from an unexpected source – your own children! Listening to their wishes and watching their reactions can help you create a unique decor that will promote your children’s well-rounded development.
