DECORATING WITH POSTERS

he poster has become an integral part in beautifying space that surrounds us. When we rush to our destinations on the city streets, we notice the printed matter attached to the walls of buildings and bulletin boards jumping at us from advertising panels. We are so accustomed to viewing posters as solely possessing informative value that we forget that they can also possess an aesthetic one. Interior designers often use simple accessories such as posters to add bright finishing touches to the interior. Using posters as an element of interior design has been gaining popularity amongst teenagers, adults and children alike. Largely this is due to the fact that they offer a simple yet effective way of changing the appearance of an interior – whether it is an of-

fice, apartment or house. The poster as we know it today has come a long way since its humble beginnings. The concept of the poster was born when humans learned how to transfer an image onto a flat surface. From that point onwards, the poster was developing rapidly and by the beginning of the 20th century acquired its characteristic features. As technology developed, so did the poster. Eventually it was possible to transfer specific photographs onto the poster, thus introducing advertising functionality. Over time, the poster grew to be considered a work of art since in its creation, the artist often adheres to a particular genre of art. Amongst children’s posters, those depicting fairy-tale characters are most popular. Many

children are happy seeing their favourite character on the walls in their room. For this purpose, vinyl posters – which are vivid, colourful and most importantly, washable – are an excellent choice. Framed posters have become a necessity in the interior of a modern and stylish individual because they add individuality to the space. Generally speaking, young people discovered the poster’s ornamental value prior to the older generation. Furthermore, a poster of a favourite actor, musician or rock band can make a valued and memorable gift. Posters have always been an affordable and effective tool to colour your world according to your own taste.

THE KITCHEN SINK

the sink matches the window over it; it has to be the same width. A wide sink underneath a narrow window or vice versa looks incongruous. MAKE THE SINK THE FOCAL POINT OF YOUR KITCHEN. Since a wide sink is not easy to conceal, try the opposite approach: make it the focal point of your kitchen. For this purpose, chose a brightly coloured sink or one made of unusual material such as copper. STAY WITHIN YOUR BUDGET. It is so easy to fall in love with an extravagant sink, only to find out later that you cannot afford it. If your budget is limited, plan ahead by deciding where you can splurge and which objects are the best to economize upon. CONSIDER YOUR NEEDS. A large sink with several compartments is suitable for gourmet cooks who prefer washing dishes under running water. Such a sink makes it possible for several people to work in the kitchen side by side; however, it is suitable for spacious kitchens only. Another option for large kitchens is to install two sinks. The large one under the window is great for washing pots and pans; the smaller one, built into the kitchen island, is convenient for washing food items and for other cooking chores.

W

hen selecting a sink for the kitchen, it is important to consider its material, shape and size. A large sink, although it may be convenient for kitchen work, may be the wrong choice for your kitchen since it is not very spacious. Do not have a “the bigger, the better” mentality.

TRY TO MATCH YOUR SINK TO YOUR KITCHEN. Buy a smaller sink if the kitchen is not big in order to balance components correctly and keep them in harmony. BASE THE SIZE OF THE SINK ON THE DIMENSIONS OF THE WINDOW. It is customary to install a sink in a house underneath the kitchen window, especially a window with a nice view. Make sure that

FUN SINKS. Give reign to your imagination to make your sink interesting. Consider different combinations of sinks if space permits. For instance, the two sink option aforementioned is a convenient and unique solution. The small sink in the kitchen island can be used to dump unfinished drinks or if filled with crushed ice, can replace the fridge for holding bottles during a party. The main advantage of this sink is its small size.

PARISIAN LACE

T

he practice of embellishing balconies with wrought iron guard screens – widely popular in Europe – helps add a special and unique charm to every building. Looking at ancient European cities with their exceptional architecture, one may study the stages of such a practice. Most of the old streets in these cozy cities and towns are filled with structures boasting various balconies and porches decorated with diverse forms of metal rails that always match the general architectural style of the building. In every architectural period these balconies played an exceptional role.

The Gothic and Classic periods are characterized by heavy banisters. During the times of Baroque and Art Nouveau, the trend was cast and wrought iron balconies. Luxurious and charming patterns of their screens created a superb sight. The “balcony architecture” of French masters in Paris is an exceptional phenomenon. Generally, Paris is unique in terms of using cast and wrought metal for decorating building fronts. Virtually every aged construction is decorated by magnificent masterpieces created by various masters of “hot iron.” Most architectural styles including Baroque, Historicism, Classicism, Neoclassicism and Art Nouveau have been transferred onto metal works. It was Paris that has begotten the French Balcony – a fake balcony guarded by a wrought iron screen. Numerous beautiful streets and boulevards of Paris display superb balconies guarded by incomparable iron screens creating that famous feeling of an eternal Parisian feast. When visiting Paris, take a special note of Parisian balconies or even sign up for a special walking tour called “The Balconies of Paris.”

an you imagine a house so filled with daylight that it reaches even the darkest and secluded corners? Alternatively, imagine you enter a house or an apartment and notice sparks of living sunlight in a windowless hall. The secret is that the walls are made of glass “bricks”. Today’s glass tiles have gone a long way from the old thick milky glass blocks of the past that were not the best material for interior decorating. They come in many shapes and colours and their use in interior design is widespread. The shape of a glass block is similar to a brick except that it is hollow and filled with air. Such bricks can have a smooth or rough surface, can be transparent or opaque, and may come in natural shade or in colour. Glass blocks possess the best qualities of their clay counterparts and as such can be used for building interior and even exteriors walls. They are very strong and capable of withstanding drastic temperature swings and even light earthquakes. The

8

FOR A SUN-FILLED HOUSE air inside the block makes for its excellent thermo- and sound-proof characteristics. They reduce noise with the same efficiency as regular bricks of the same thickness. One of the most important qualities of glass blocks is that they are fireproof. In case of fire a glass wall will neither crack nor melt within an hour. As for their photometric qualities, glass blocks can be slightly permeable (with a smooth surface) or light dispersing and light directing (with a rough surface). When selecting glass blocks for home improvement projects, one needs to consider the function. Usually they are used as an architectural element for building nonbearing walls. Now that we discussed their practical characteristics, let us consider their decorative qualities. This trendy material is great for finding unusual solutions in interior de-

sign to allow light to be used as a decorative element. Deciding on transparent versus opaque or coloured versus natural, one can achieve just the right amount of lighting. For example, transparent glass blocks let through up to 80 percent of light while the coloured ones, only up to 50 to 75 percent. Glass bricks provide visual obscuration while admitting light. Therefore their use for the bathroom walls is widespread. This material looks great in combination with other finishes: for example, you can use them to make the upper part of a wall where the lower part is made of brick, concrete, or wood – or the other way around. Architects and designers sometimes use them to replace stained glass. Combining various shades, textures, and sizes of glass blocks and interspersing opaque and transparent ones can create beautiful art compositions.

RENTING? YOU CAN STILL HAVE A NICE KITCHEN!

T

he rental you just moved in feels oppressive because the décor is not what you like. Sounds familiar? Of course, you want the whole apartment to feel cozy and personal but as the “homeowner” the main area you care about is your kitchen. There are a few ways to make the kitchen in your rental apartment cozy without going into full-blown renovations.

1

It may sound trite but try to start with the simplest and most obvious step – a full-blown cleaning. Not every rental apartment can boast total cleanliness, and to make the kitchen feel closer to your heart and more comfortable it needs to be thoroughly scrubbed. Clean lampshades and windows, cabinet fronts and countertops, kitchen furniture and the floor will change the look of your kitchen.

2

Hide the junk and unneeded objects. The worst rental apartment problem is the abundance of old and unwanted things. If you are not allowed to dump them (for example, if your rental is a furnished flat) you

10

ALL ABOUT HOME

can just put them away. Use high-to-reach shelves and balconies to hold unwanted pots, pans, appliances and other small items.

3

Repair non-functional or broken items. Fix small nuisances like a leaking faucet in the kitchen, peeling wallpaper, or low-watt bulbs. Again, if you rent from a homeowner and not a rental corporation, be sure to discuss of the all the planned repairs beforehand.

4

The backsplash over the counter and the cook top often make for the most visible and useful section of the kitchen wall. Nevertheless, installing a new one is a costly proposition and not many want to go into such an expenditure of funds for an apartment that they cannot call theirs. A way around this problem is a temporary plastic panel backsplash.

5 6

window is in a bad shape or when the view out of the window is not very appealing.

7

A new and appealing good-looking dining set will greatly improve the look of the eating area in your rental kitchen. It will add beauty and coziness even if the rest of the kitchen is not very attractive.

8

Brightly coloured fabrics of oven mitts or pads, aprons, the tablecloths, tea towels, and napkins are an inexpensive but effective decorative touch. If you prefer a coordinated look, buy everything in a set.

9

Decorative elements such as flowerpots or vases can breathe a new life into the look into your kitchen. Add an element that will personalize the look; for example, place some figurines from your collection in one corner of the counter.

To hide a worn floor, cover it with a runner or a rug. Its portability is an added bonus when you move.

10

The role of window covering is hard to overestimate when improving the look of your kitchen, especially in the case when the

Of course, it is hard to make a rental kitchen feel like home but the aforementioned steps can add comfort and convenience.

Your family photos or paintings will easily conceal problem spots on the walls.

THE TREADMILL – A FAMILY THERAPIST

T

he health benefits of using a treadmill are indisputable. A home treadmill is a desirable and useful possession; you can almost hear it calling to you from the magazine page asking to be taken home. However, the list of advantages of such an acquisition does not include a paragraph about family relationships, while there is a direct connection between the two. In our daily lives, we experience both positive and negative emotions; the problem arises when we bring the negative ones into our home. Problems outside of the home often become a burden and unfortunately, we tend to relieve it through our loved ones. Unnecessary family arguments

12

ALL ABOUT HOME

arise and it is too late when we realize that we are in the wrong – we have already hurt our loved one. Too many of such misunderstandings develop into a wall between two people. To avoid such emotional escapes, psychologists suggest you install an antistress device at home: the treadmill. When you feel especially irritable, get on your treadmill right away. Just a few minutes on the device relax and calm you down. The measured pace helps return your emotional balance. One-two, onetwo – your heart beats evenly, your breath evens out, and your head clears. Jogging is great for concentration and cooling down. In the meantime, your brain processes the information and solves the situation.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

You will get off your treadmill feeling completely changed. Your rage, distress, and confusion are gone having given way to clarity and calm. In this state, you will not take your frustration off on your loved ones and will be able to avoid mistakes that may ruin the family relationship. Therefore, a simple treadmill serves as a family therapist that keeps the family intact, aside from the fact that jogging is a great pastime that awards you with emotional strength, good health, and high vitality. Go on and try this unusual approach to the physical and emotional health of your family.

CURTAINS:

PRE-MADE OR CUSTOM-MADE?

C

urtains are probably the most detectable element of textile decorating; thus, choosing the proper window treatment should not be taken lightly. Base your selection on the general style and décor of your interior. Prior to shopping for curtains, define the decorative style prevalent in your room. In order to make the proper selection, you need to account for the colour scheme and function you expect from your curtains; is it purely aesthetic or practical? Do you want your curtains to protect the premise from excessive sunlight, emphasize particular features of the interior, or perhaps conceal design imperfections? Upon dealing with the issue of the window treatment design, you will be faced with another: whether you need premade or custom-made curtains to fit your style. Keep in mind that your options may be limited by the pre-made curtains as you may not find the exact design or style you have in mind. It is essential that the style you select works harmoniously with the rest of the interior. Pre-made curtains are popular because of their relatively low price compared to custom-made ones. Furthermore, they are available immediately whereas custommade curtains take a considerable amount of time to be ready. Having bought premade curtains, you have the opportunity to assemble them and immediately assess the fit of the design, quality and style. Essentially, you are given a chance to “try them on” and in the case that they are not to your liking, return them to the store. This procedure is very important since curtains can look completely differently in your interior than they did in the store due to the difference in lighting. As mentioned before, obtaining custommade curtains can take a while; up to one month. However, among the advantages of this option is the virtually unlimited selection of styles, textures and colours. Moreover, you will avoid the problem of wrong dimensions. Lastly, the individuality of the details and trims reduces the possibility of seeing the exact same window design in someone else’s home.

AURORA: THE PEARL OF THE GTA

H

ello, I’m Natalia Slobidker! I am a professional fulltime realtor; I specialize in real estate pre-sales, sales strategy development and keeping real estate transaction risks at a minimum. My mission: minimum stress – maximum benefit; in any real estate transaction. Today I’ll tell you about one of the most prestigious cities in the GTA: Aurora.

First, a little history: In 1793, Vice-Governor John Graves Simcoe ordered to extend Yonge Street to Holland Landing. The road stretched past the places where Aurora stands today. The first house in Aurora was built in 1795 at the crossroads of Yonge Street and Catherine Avenue. In 1804, Richard Machell opened the first business, becoming the first merchant at the crossroads of Yonge and Wellington. The place soon became known as Machell’s Corner. The place’s first manager was another businessman – Charles, who subsequently renamed it to Aurora.

It’s quite fitting that the word “Aurora” refers to the dawning of the day. Whether searching for a new location for your business or just aiming for more balance in your life, Aurora can offer what you are looking for and then some.

Historically, it came to be that Aurora’s ratio of luxury estates to ordinary homes is much higher than in many other cities. This certainly puts the city in an elite position, which is reflected in the real estate prices and their rate of growth. Over the past few years, the living conditions of Aurora’s residents caught up to, and even surpassed, some other suburbs. The unique location (with GTA’s north, south, east and west borders being equidistant from here) provides many benefits for the city. It takes only a 30 to 40 minute drive to either downtown Toronto or the beaches of Lake Simcoe. During that same timeframe, you can get to Mississauga or Scarborough, where a large number of jobs are concentrated. This means, that by choosing Aurora as your place of residence, you open the door to practically all available concentrated job centres in the GTA.

With the construction of the railway in 1853, Aurora had become an important economic centre to the north of Toronto. The proximity to agricultural land made Aurora a thriving industrial city. The first school of the city was built by John Merritt and named after a famous local doctor G. W. Williams. That school is open to this day.

16

ALL ABOUT HOME

Families with children will be interested to hear that Aurora’s schools have an average rating of 7.5 and higher, some even reaching a 9.7 rating. If these children are teenagers, it will be important to note the welldeveloped transport infrastructure Aurora has to offer, which will allow them to move independently in any direction. I would like to also note that their GO station has one of the largest underground parking garages, if not the largest, with several exits that provide alternatives to the traffic jams at the entrance-exit during peak hours.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

For those who commute to work by car, Aurora offers direct access to Highway 404 and 400, and less than 20 minutes to tracks 401 and 407 – the major highways of Southern Ontario.

4

Your children are offered excellent choices of schools and all the variety of extra-curricular activity.

5

You can find properties for any sort of budget here – from a modest townhouse to a luxurious estate. Whether you are interested in this wonderful place or in a professional analysis of another potential place to live, call me.

For the entertainment lovers, the city offers exciting events that include street festivals, first class leisure facilities, golf courses, and exclusive shops and restaurants. You can find cuisine for every taste and every budget here. Aurora combines the favourable atmosphere of a small town with the advantages of a city centre. Its location on the edge of the environmentally important Oak Ridges Moraine adds beauty to this growing urban community.

In summary, here are five reasons to choose Aurora as your home:

1

You will find yourself in good company; residents of Aurora are prosperous and friendly.

2

There are a number of advanced manufacturing companies, including Magna International.

3

You will enjoy close proximity of the main areas of the GTA since access to these is convenient for those behind the wheel and those taking public transport.

WALLPAPER – FROM THE 16TH CENTURY TO OUR TIME

R

umour has it that shortly before his demise, Oscar Wilde said, “either wallpaper or I, but one of us has to go.” Historically, wallpaper was not popular in the field of decorative arts because it was difficult to work with and fragile. Nevertheless, in our everyday life wallpaper plays a major role in interior design and may influence both the colour of furniture and the style of the interior. We hope that discovering the history of wallpaper will change the way you feel about it. The history of European wallpaper begins in the 16th century. The first European wall decorations were textiles. In the Middle Ages, luxurious wool and silk tapestries were used not only as décor and artwork, but also as insulation. These tapestries were incredibly costly to produce and as such, were only available to the wealthiest consumers. The Renaissance was the golden age of the textile, with expensive and beautifully woven fabrics used as decoration on walls, tables and doorways. That was when wallpaper was developed as an inexpensive alternative to textiles. The earliest surviving wallpapers are from early 16th century in England. These were block-printed and then coloured by hand. These early papers usually mimicked fabrics like damasks and brocades and were used not only as wallpaper but also as liners for chests and armoires. By the 1600’s, wallpaper was common in Western Europe. A paperhangers’ guild was started in Paris in 1599 and a historian from the era, Savary des Brusions, wrote about “a type of tapestry on paper … which is used by the poorer classes in Paris to cover the walls of their huts or their shops.” It was also in the early 17th century that the Chinese began printing rice paper panels with flowers, birds and landscapes – a genre that became known as chinoiseries and were soon imitated by European designers. Flocked wallpaper was developed in the 17th century as well. This involved printing a background colour onto paper, then applying adhesive in a pattern, and sprinkling the paper with the dyed trimmings of sheep wool, resulting in a sumptuously textured imitation of cut velvet. In the 18th and 19th centuries, wallpaper was an increasingly popular decoration with designers exploring different kinds of patterns including chinoiserie, flocking and scenic papers. Wallpaper designs were

FOR ADVERTISEMENTS CALL (416) 477-6107

often topical; some American and French wallpapers celebrated the revolutions of 1776 and 1789, respectively, and the Great Exhibition of 1851 inspired several commemorative designs. The 19th century was an age of massive technological development in every aspect of life, and wallpaper was no exception. The first machines for printing wallpaper were developed in the late 18th century and refined in the 19th century. It was during the 1800s that steam power was applied to the printing process, allowing papers to be printed much faster and cheaper than ever before. Inventors also developed industrial methods for printing multiple colours. Cheap industrial production methods meant that wallpaper was available to a wider population. It also, unfortunately, meant that the design phase of the production process was often neglected. Nevertheless, a number of designers created flat, two-dimensional patterns based on abstracted flora and fauna derived from preindustrial prototypes and using pre-industrial methods. During the 19th century, walls were often divided into three sections vertically and the late Victorian era often saw walls with different complementary patterns for each section and borders between them. Wallpaper was very popular during the first third of the 20th century, although the influence of mid-century Modernism soon led to a lot of white walls. Advances in technology led to more durable papers, longer lasting dyes and easier application and removal of wallpapers. Recent developments in digital printing have brought a new generation of artists and designers to the medium, yielding large-scale murals and unexpected patterns, and ensuring that the wallpaper’s long history marches on.

SPRING ROOF INSPECTION CHECKLIST

A

s winter transforms into spring, homeowners head outside to evaluate their property and consider ways that they can improve their homes. One of the most important things to inspect is your roofing; you may have incurred damage to it throughout the winter. Now is a great time to inspect it and determine what needs to be done to get it back in great condition. As you inspect your roof, complete the following actions:

Clean Gutters When they are clogged, gutters can become a huge issue for your roof. You may have had a lot of leaves, twigs and other debris clog the gutters in the fall. Following, with the snow and rain during the winter, the clogs can damage your roof. Using a ladder, check your gutters. Clean out any debris using gloves and a bucket. Then, you can run a hose through your gutters and down your downspouts to make sure that they are free of debris.

Examine Gutters While cleaning your gutters, examine their condition and look for any signs of damage. Damaged gutters should be replaced or repaired right away, so water can flow unimpeded through them.

Inspect the Roof’s Exterior Check the exterior of your roof. You may need to get a ladder and get on your roof to see everything. This can be completed by a professional who takes the proper safety precautions. While inspecting the roof, you should look for signs of the following: Damaged or worn shingles Missing shingles Loose or exposed nails Missing caulk Rusty metal flashing Missing or damaged flashing Sagging areas Excessive granule loss Chimney cracks Rot or mold

If you notice any of these things, you need to make the necessary repairs or replacements to get everything back to great condition to ensure that your roof will be able to continue to protect your home.

Check your Roof’s Interior Once you have checked the roof from the outside, head indoors and check out the condition of it from the inside, typically by peering around your attic. Some of the things that you should look for include cracked roof sheathing, ventilation issues, sagging, light coming through cracks and leaks. Any of these factors signal that you need repairs right away. As you inspect your roofing material, it is important to take note of any area that is damaged and in need of repairs. These repairs should be made as soon as possible. Otherwise, your roof will not be able to properly protect your home from various weather conditions. It could also open up your home to pests and water damage. MaxPro Roofing Inc.

GROUT T

he clean and white grout between tiles turns gray over time; in especially bad cases it turn dark gray with black spots. This can spoil the appearance of even the most nicely decorated and spotlessly clean bathroom or kitchen. The reason behind these changes in the colour of grout is lime, mold, humidity, grease, smoke and the residue left by household cleaners. To eliminate the unsightly deposits on the grout, you need specific cleaning agents and plenty of patience. First, use a small brush to apply some cleaner between the tiles; the cleaner can be anything, even dishwashing liquid. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes and then wash off thoroughly with clean water. Soda diluted with lemon juice is a very effective agent, as well as mustard, vinegar, ammonia and fine table salt. However, avoid using regular soap because it promotes mold. One of the most effective ways to clean grout is the use of any agent containing chlorine. Of course, it has an unpleasant odour but the smell will go away in a short period of time while all the dirt, microorganisms and fungi will be destroyed. If the stains are contained to small areas, you can paint them over with a water resistant white marker sold at any household goods store. In the same store, you can buy latex-based paint to use in several layers for larger areas. Another potentially successful strategy to clean grout is to use a steam cleaner and after use, wash the tiles with clean water and wipe with a dry cloth. If it is only the top layer of the grout that is affected by fungi, the stains will go away when rubbed with fine sandpaper. However, if after all of your efforts the grout still looks gray it means that it is fully affected by fungus. In this case the only way to get rid of it is to replace it. Remove the old grout using a special drill attachment and then apply the new one. To have the colour last longer, treat the dry surface of the grout with car wax. This will prevent water from sticking to the grout, thus preventing the appearance of mold. Repeat this procedure every year.

A MINIATURE HOME OFFICE

A

niche in the wall, an alcove, or even a walk-in closet can be turned into a comfortable and handsome home office. The only requirement is a skillful approach to organizing your workspace. First of all, plan carefully. Think out every detail leading to creating a compact, convenient, and esthetically pleasing workspace. Carefully take all the measurements. If there is enough space, all the necessary furniture can be purchased. Of course, many alcoves and niches are too small or have unusual configuration. In this case show some creativity.

26

ALL ABOUT HOME

The office design, the number of shelves and their placing, the dimensions of the desk – all this should be based on the purpose of the workroom and the type of work you are going to do in it. Avoid stuffing your new office with every single object that may ever be needed for your work. Fill it only with the most necessary items that will be used on a regular basis. Deep wall niches can be turned into a stationary office while the ones that are not deep enough require that you place your work chair outside their bounds. Therefore,

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

when planning your home office do not forget to consider the room where it is going to be arranged, and pay special attention to the chair. Ideally, the entrance into your home office should be barred by a door, a panel, or a curtain, so that it is hidden and does not encumber the rest of the room. Nevertheless, it is possible to integrate it into the room decor and leave it open to view. In this case you need to make sure your miniature workspace matches the rest of the room.

walls and ceilings. These condensation spots are the source of the future mould, and when it starts to develop, it will grow rapidly. There are about 100,000 known species of the mould fungi, but it is suspected that the existing species reach the quarter-million mark. It is common knowledge that mould is dangerous for structural components but it is even more dangerous for human health. The danger comes not from the mould itself but rather from the millions of spores discharged by mould growth into its environment because we breathe it. Spores that get into our respiratory and circulatory systems may cause a whole slew of disease. Besides, during its reproduction process mould emits volatile organic compounds causing specific smells and very harmful for our health.

Diseases and Disorders • Various allergic reactions of the skin that are difficult to diagnose and treat (dermatoses and mycosis) and respiratory tract (rhinitis, coughs, and even bronchial asthma);

Everything you Need to Know About Mould

W

hat we know about mould is that it is a symptom of dampness, that it does not look pretty, and of course, that you better not have it around. What you know very little about though is that mould is bad for your health.

• Locomotive system and rheumatic joint disorders; • Headaches, nausea, dizziness, chills, and even emaciation of an undefined origin. Children, elderly, and people with low immunity are at an increased risk of such disorders.

FIGHTING MOULD • Small dark spots on walls and ceiling can be treated with peroxide or kitchen vinegar as a first aid step;

• If you have house pets and/or houseplants; • If you have small children and do laundry often; • If you keep the interior of your house cool in a period of high humidity outside; • If different rooms of your home are not heated uniformly;

Bonjour Paris!

F

or centuries, Paris, France has been collectively regarded as the center for the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement; attracting and showcasing the best the world has to offer in perfume, fashion, design, culinary and wine. Paris can be considered the ultimate host attracting creative genius from within and beyond its borders – culture in its purest form. It is no wonder then that Parisians have mastered the state of great comfort and extravagant living. Luxury is woven into the very fabric of their culture; the key in luxury is discretion. Discrete luxury now has an address: 19 bd de la Tour Maubourg, home to Le Narcisse Blanc Hotel-Spa. This rarely offered and coveted historic Haussmann building is as privileged a location as it gets in the French capital. Although recently debuted in 2016, Narcisse has been a century in the making.

The French understand that referencing the past is a value that opens the way to modernity. Aptly, thus re-imagined, French Muse, Ballerina Cleo Merode and the Narcisse flower together would be the inspiration, and ultimate hosts to the guests of this world class address. In this city, full of overachievers, anything short of pure perfection would be treason. To execute this next chapter in history, a talented design team of co-authors was assembled. Designers Laurent Bardet and Laurence Jean, from Laurent and Laurence respectively, were to lead the artistic direction, branding and interior architecture. Thierry Martin and Thibaut Fron’s companyExclusive Interiors by T&T based in Compiegne would execute the design of the hotels interior. All 37 guest rooms and suits are defined and designed by their view. Regal, romantic, bespoke, pearl studded adorned millwork, metallic gold frames and hand painted flowers crown the walls like the Ballerina’s tiara. Butter beige and warm creams conjure up thoughts of champagne as bubbly floral prints meander through couture fabrics. Silk Taupe’s and Satin Rose prevail as if pulled from Cleo’s wardrobe much like Boldini’s
