THE KITCHEN SINK

he practice of embellishing balconies with wrought iron guard screens – widely popular in Europe – helps add a special and unique charm to every building. Looking at ancient European cities with their exceptional architecture, one may study the stages of such a practice. Most of the old streets in these cozy cities and towns are filled with structures boasting various balconies and porches decorated with diverse forms of metal rails that always match the general architectural style of the building. In every architectural period these balconies played an exceptional role.

The Gothic and Classic periods are characterized by heavy banisters. During the times of Baroque and Art Nouveau, the trend was cast and wrought iron balconies. Luxurious and charming patterns of their screens created a superb sight. The “balcony architecture” of French masters in Paris is an exceptional phenomenon. Generally, Paris is unique in terms of using cast and wrought metal for decorating building fronts. Virtually every aged construction is decorated by magnificent masterpieces created by various masters of “hot iron.” Most architectural styles including Baroque, Historicism, Classicism, Neoclassicism and Art Nouveau have been transferred onto metal works. It was Paris that has begotten the French Balcony – a fake balcony guarded by a wrought iron screen. Numerous beautiful streets and boulevards of Paris display superb balconies guarded by incomparable iron screens creating that famous feeling of an eternal Parisian feast. When visiting Paris, take a special note of Parisian balconies or even sign up for a special walking tour called “The Balconies of Paris.”

Alternatively, imagine you enter a house or an apartment and notice sparks of living sunlight in a windowless hall. The secret is that the walls are made of glass “bricks”. Today’s glass tiles have gone a long way from the old thick milky glass blocks of the past that were not the best material for interior decorating. They come in many shapes and colours and their use in interior design is widespread. The shape of a glass block is similar to a brick except that it is hollow and filled with air. Such bricks can have a smooth or rough surface, can be transparent or opaque, and may come in natural shade or in colour. Glass blocks possess the best qualities of their clay counterparts and as such can be used for building interior and even exteriors walls. They are very strong and capable of withstanding drastic temperature swings and even light earthquakes. The

One of the most important qualities of glass blocks is that they are fireproof. In case of fire a glass wall will neither crack nor melt within an hour. As for their photometric qualities, glass blocks can be slightly permeable (with a smooth surface) or light dispersing and light directing (with a rough surface). When selecting glass blocks for home improvement projects, one needs to consider the function. Usually they are used as an architectural element for building nonbearing walls. sign to allow light to be used as a decorative element. Deciding on transparent versus opaque or coloured versus natural, one can achieve just the right amount of lighting. For example, transparent glass blocks let through up to 80 percent of light while the coloured ones, only up to 50 to 75 percent. Glass bricks provide visual obscuration while admitting light. Therefore their use for the bathroom walls is widespread. This material looks great in combination with other finishes: for example, you can use them to make the upper part of a wall where the lower part is made of brick, concrete, or wood – or the other way around. Architects and designers sometimes use them to replace stained glass. Combining various shades, textures, and sizes of glass blocks and interspersing opaque and transparent ones can create beautiful art compositions.

AURORA: THE PEARL OF THE GTA

ello, I’m Natalia Slobidker! I am a professional fulltime realtor; I specialize in real estate pre-sales, sales strategy development and keeping real estate transaction risks at a minimum. My mission: minimum stress – maximum benefit; in any real estate transaction. Today I’ll tell you about one of the most prestigious cities in the GTA: Aurora.

First, a little history: In 1793, Vice-Governor John Graves Simcoe ordered to extend Yonge Street to Holland Landing. The road stretched past the places where Aurora stands today. The first house in Aurora was built in 1795 at the crossroads of Yonge Street and Catherine Avenue. In 1804, Richard Machell opened the first business, becoming the first merchant at the crossroads of Yonge and Wellington. The place soon became known as Machell’s Corner. The place’s first manager was another businessman – Charles, who subsequently renamed it to Aurora.

It’s quite fitting that the word “Aurora” refers to the dawning of the day. Whether searching for a new location for your business or just aiming for more balance in your life, Aurora can offer what you are looking for and then some.

Historically, it came to be that Aurora’s ratio of luxury estates to ordinary homes is much higher than in many other cities. This certainly puts the city in an elite position, which is reflected in the real estate prices and their rate of growth. Over the past few years, the living conditions of Aurora’s residents caught up to, and even surpassed, some other suburbs. The unique location (with GTA’s north, south, east and west borders being equidistant from here) provides many benefits for the city. It takes only a 30 to 40 minute drive to either downtown Toronto or the beaches of Lake Simcoe. During that same timeframe, you can get to Mississauga or Scarborough, where a large number of jobs are concentrated. This means, that by choosing Aurora as your place of residence, you open the door to practically all available concentrated job centres in the GTA.

With the construction of the railway in 1853, Aurora had become an important economic centre to the north of Toronto. The proximity to agricultural land made Aurora a thriving industrial city. The first school of the city was built by John Merritt and named after a famous local doctor G. W. Williams. That school is open to this day.

WALLPAPER – FROM THE 16TH CENTURY TO OUR TIME

umour has it that shortly before his demise, Oscar Wilde said, “either wallpaper or I, but one of us has to go.” Historically, wallpaper was not popular in the field of decorative arts because it was difficult to work with and fragile. Nevertheless, in our everyday life wallpaper plays a major role in interior design and may influence both the colour of furniture and the style of the interior. We hope that discovering the history of wallpaper will change the way you feel about it. The history of European wallpaper begins in the 16th century. The first European wall decorations were textiles. In the Middle Ages, luxurious wool and silk tapestries were used not only as décor and artwork, but also as insulation. These tapestries were incredibly costly to produce and as such, were only available to the wealthiest consumers. The Renaissance was the golden age of the textile, with expensive and beautifully woven fabrics used as decoration on walls, tables and doorways. That was when wallpaper was developed as an inexpensive alternative to textiles. The earliest surviving wallpapers are from early 16th century in England. These were block-printed and then coloured by hand. These early papers usually mimicked fabrics like damasks and brocades and were used not only as wallpaper but also as liners for chests and armoires. By the 1600’s, wallpaper was common in Western Europe. A paperhangers’ guild was started in Paris in 1599 and a historian from the era, Savary des Brusions, wrote about “a type of tapestry on paper … which is used by the poorer classes in Paris to cover the walls of their huts or their shops.” It was also in the early 17th century that the Chinese began printing rice paper panels with flowers, birds and landscapes – a genre that became known as chinoiseries and were soon imitated by European designers. Flocked wallpaper was developed in the 17th century as well. This involved printing a background colour onto paper, then applying adhesive in a pattern, and sprinkling the paper with the dyed trimmings of sheep wool, resulting in a sumptuously textured imitation of cut velvet. In the 18th and 19th centuries, wallpaper was an increasingly popular decoration with designers exploring different kinds of patterns including chinoiserie, flocking and scenic papers. Wallpaper designs were

often topical; some American and French wallpapers celebrated the revolutions of 1776 and 1789, respectively, and the Great Exhibition of 1851 inspired several commemorative designs. The 19th century was an age of massive technological development in every aspect of life, and wallpaper was no exception. The first machines for printing wallpaper were developed in the late 18th century and refined in the 19th century. It was during the 1800s that steam power was applied to the printing process, allowing papers to be printed much faster and cheaper than ever before. Inventors also developed industrial methods for printing multiple colours. Cheap industrial production methods meant that wallpaper was available to a wider population. It also, unfortunately, meant that the design phase of the production process was often neglected. Nevertheless, a number of designers created flat, two-dimensional patterns based on abstracted flora and fauna derived from preindustrial prototypes and using pre-industrial methods. During the 19th century, walls were often divided into three sections vertically and the late Victorian era often saw walls with different complementary patterns for each section and borders between them. Wallpaper was very popular during the first third of the 20th century, although the influence of mid-century Modernism soon led to a lot of white walls. Advances in technology led to more durable papers, longer lasting dyes and easier application and removal of wallpapers. Recent developments in digital printing have brought a new generation of artists and designers to the medium, yielding large-scale murals and unexpected patterns, and ensuring that the wallpaperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s long history marches on.

GROUT T

he clean and white grout between tiles turns gray over time; in especially bad cases it turn dark gray with black spots. This can spoil the appearance of even the most nicely decorated and spotlessly clean bathroom or kitchen. The reason behind these changes in the colour of grout is lime, mold, humidity, grease, smoke and the residue left by household cleaners. To eliminate the unsightly deposits on the grout, you need specific cleaning agents and plenty of patience. First, use a small brush to apply some cleaner between the tiles; the cleaner can be anything, even dishwashing liquid. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes and then wash off thoroughly with clean water. Soda diluted with lemon juice is a very effective agent, as well as mustard, vinegar, ammonia and fine table salt. However, avoid using regular soap because it promotes mold. One of the most effective ways to clean grout is the use of any agent containing chlorine. Of course, it has an unpleasant odour but the smell will go away in a short period of time while all the dirt, microorganisms and fungi will be destroyed. If the stains are contained to small areas, you can paint them over with a water resistant white marker sold at any household goods store. In the same store, you can buy latex-based paint to use in several layers for larger areas. Another potentially successful strategy to clean grout is to use a steam cleaner and after use, wash the tiles with clean water and wipe with a dry cloth. If it is only the top layer of the grout that is affected by fungi, the stains will go away when rubbed with fine sandpaper. However, if after all of your efforts the grout still looks gray it means that it is fully affected by fungus. In this case the only way to get rid of it is to replace it. Remove the old grout using a special drill attachment and then apply the new one. To have the colour last longer, treat the dry surface of the grout with car wax. This will prevent water from sticking to the grout, thus preventing the appearance of mold. Repeat this procedure every year.
