Eternal Classic

T

he world abides the laws of time which meticulously influence us and the appearance of objects all around us. However, the floor clock is not subject to time; floor clocks can serve you for a long time and can serve as a wonderful addition to the traditional interior. Do not assume that floor clock mechanisms in the style popular near the end of the 19th century are currently out-dated. This is in fact an article of an antique nature; however, having this element in the home means possessing a priceless “keeper of the times and family values.” Not surprisingly, the floor clock is often handed from generation to generation.

PURE CLASSIC Classic antique floor clocks generally have a tall and narrow carcase made of natural dark wood. The tone of the wood can range from light brown to almost black. Traditionally, the clock mechanism was located a bit below the dial behind the door and the entire construction was exquisitely decorated with carved elements, inlay, and gilding. There were also floor clocks which showcase an antique porcelain or silverware collection; however, it is more common to find a pendulum with a suspension attached to the door. The silhouette of the classic model of floor clocks resembles a city tower in the

form of a parallelepiped but with a round top instead of pointy. Viewing the clock can be separated into three aspects: the base, the showcase with the door, and the top with the dial. The floor clock is an integral component of the interior’s classical arrangement where it has always had a prominent spot amongst other furniture.

ADOPTING A MODEL Adopted clock styles incorporate modern trends that designers choose for particular interiors. Hence, floor clocks resembling the classical model can be made of not only wood but also MDF or plywood. Furthermore, they can be painted in light or neutral tones as well as bright colours. All of this is done to guarantee a smooth integration of the clock in the modern interior.

MODERN FLOOR CLOCKS Today, an increasing amount of antique articles inspire designers to create modern versions of consoles, chairs, and of course, floor clocks. Thus, we have a wide range of options in stores that sell the floor clocks. For example, we can choose one with a metal frame resembling a streetlight or a figurative white carcase with a uniquely designed exterior. For this reason, floor clocks represent dedication to tradition and good taste. They are suitable companions to furniture in an extensive variety of interior designs.

A FIREPLACE

IN A MODERN STYLE

M

odern decor is often minimalistic, streamlined, and laconic. It is limited in detail and accent. Therefore, every object within the thus decorated space has to be stylish but not opulent. A fireplace is just one of such objects. There is fashion in fireplaces like in everything else regarding style, and such ultramodern models are among the most fashionable. Man has always been fascinated by fire. Of course, the fire of today does not perform its vital function anymore – we use other sources to keep us warm, and use fire mostly to create comfort and charm in our homes. Fireplace manufacturing is an everevolving art. Since the day when our distant ancestor assembled the first hearth in his cave, the fireplace has been constantly evolving; the fireplace of today is a combin-

ation of the engineering genius and artistic revelation. Projects by the best designers of the world convert everyday appliances that are part of a hi-tech style into real works of art, and fireplaces are no exception. They are created from man-made materials like metal, heat-resistant glass, mirror glass, and glass ceramics, to name a few. There is no limit to perfection, and modern designers boldly experiment with materials and shapes, blending styles and breaking traditions. Classic styles can be combined with Art Deco to create an extraordinary effect. The synthesis of fire and steel is the epitome of modern ideas. Oblong fireplaces-transformers are austere and laconic but are surprising in their interesting colour combinations or in blending advanced technologies with exquisite shapes. One can easily call ultramodern fireplaces avant-garde-style

clothing for fire, made from tinted glass, mirror surfaces, and antiquated metal. Geometrically-precise lines only outline the fire’s space seemingly not limiting it. For eclectic interiors manufacturers offer eclectic fireplaces that combine classic stone with metal surfaces, smooth textures with rough ones, or vivid colours with streamlined shapes. Lately, the North American market presents fireplaces with a TV screen inserted into a fake firebox, showing a recording of real fire. Of course, the imitation of anything leaves a lot to be desired, and nothing can replace live fire, no matter how artistically it is reproduced. Unfortunately, wood-burning fireplaces are a thing of the past in Canada and the US. You can still find them in older houses but new houses are built with artificial fireplaces only because wood- and coal-burning emissions are harmful to the environment.

Elegant Marble

M

arble, translated from Greek, means “the shining stone.” Since ancient times, this noble material was used to create luscious buildings and entertainment facilities. Marble possesses numerous advantageous characteristics such as durability, heat and cold resistance, and moisture resistance. Despite these strengthening factors, marble remains malleable in human hands. Antique architects from the Renaissance left behind great marble treasures such as the Taj Mahal, Medici Chapel, and Temple of Artemis. Marble is just as popular today. Designers often choose various surfaces to be marble such as those in the kitchen, living room, bathroom, or hallway. It will be difficult to find the optimal option, especially if your interior is in one of the classical styles. Marble truly becomes a part of the interior, highlighting its lightness and elegance. It no longer attracts all of the attention but rather serves as the perfect zest in the big picture.

THE FINISH OF THE KITCHEN The interior of the kitchen challenges us with its high demands of ergonomics, comfort, beauty, and of course, practicality. The biggest challenge is the tabletop. We desire for the kitchen to look as good as new, without scratches, cracks, and damage even several years after renovations. Marble is an aesthetically pleasing option; however, be mindful of its susceptibility to scratches.

ant to damage, possesses bactericidal qualities, and is effective at blocking sound. Marble is effective in large masses – remember about this when choosing the tiles. Avoid interfering with the natural design on the marble using other decorative elements. When covering the walls, use tiles of equal size and avoid large expansion gaps between tiles. This way, you will achieve the best results.

tracts the family and friends during cold winter evenings to chat, watch the flames, and enjoy each other’s company. As such, the fireplace deserves special attention. Marble is resistant to high temperatures which makes it an irreplaceable material for decorating the fireplace.

A MARBLE FLOOR A marble floor often serves as a highlight in the interior. It creates an atmosphere of luxury, nobility, and harmony. Not surprisingly, these types of floors can be found in the halls of opera theatres, castles, and country estates. The design of the marble is outstanding so be assured that your interior will be unique!

CARING FOR MARBLE Be careful when choosing a cleaning agent for marble. It is highly sensitive to various chemical and alkaline substances as they react with the marble and can potentially ruin it. The cleaning agents you use should be of a neutral pH (7) such as water. Regularly wipe the marble with a wax based substance. This will protect the design on the marble and make it even more resistant to damage. Marble is a porous material. Spilled wine or coffee can easily change its colour. To avoid this, cover the marble with an oil repellent substance that will act as a barrier for liquids and other substances.

WHAT CAN A VASE BE FILLED WITH?

D

o empty vases irritate the eye? Contemplating over what you can put in a vase? Try using dry decorative flowers – they look great in glass and crystal vases. For aromatic sachets, use vases in the form of a large dish or cup whereas for a composition of branches, it is best to use a traditional flower vase. The dry decorative flowers are also great for vases made of water-fearing materials, such as wood.

A SWEET DÉCOR Vases for candy are creative decorations not only for the dinner table but also for a coffee table or a stand in the lobby. This vase should not be too small (to ensure that the sweets do not end quickly), nor should it be unstable as it is usually situated in areas of common access. An ideal model would contain numerous compartments so that you can place a variety of candy or nuts.

A VASE FOR FRUITS WITH TIERS The main difference between a vase for fruit and a vase for candy is size; the vase for fruit must be large enough to contain at least four apples. Generally, the form of this type of vase is oval or round. Furthermore, the vase is often raised using one or several legs with a stand. For a holiday table, it is effective to use a vase with tiers. When filling the vase, follow the rule “heavy on the bottom, light on the top.” In other words, oranges, bananas, and pears would occupy the lower plate whereas strawberries, apricots, and prunes would occupy the top plate.

A VASE FOR JAM A vase for jam greatly resembles a vase for candy; however, the main difference is not even in size but rather in the lid (so that the jam does not form a dry crust near the surface). An ideal vase would have a notch designated for a spoon.

Transparent Furniture

T

he invention of transparent furniture sparked a revolution in the world of interior design. In recent years, designers are just about scrambling for new ways to craft masterpieces from transparent materials. As it turns out, transparent materials bring new life to common furniture we are so used to seeing! Chairs, recliners, tables,

shelves, and consoles are just a few ways that transparent materials can make a home more fresh and stylish than ever before! It was not too long ago that the dream of transparent furniture could be realized only through the use of glass. Thanks to recent technological progressions, however, new alternatives suitable for creating transparent furniture have emerged. One such ma-

terial is Plexiglas. Its breakthrough in the interior design industry has shattered the price and weight of comparable glass transparent furniture. Furthermore, Plexiglas is far more malleable than regular glass; it can assume the form of practically anything - a perfect fit for creative designers! Besides its unique and fashionable look, transparent furniture is also praised for its versatility. This furniture disregards the stylistic aspects of the environment it is put into, simply because it fits into every environment! Classical, fusion, minimalism, hi-tech and many other styles go hand in hand with transparent objects. The colour scheme of the interior also does not matter, since transparency is not a colour. This fact is able to tell us that transparent objects simply cannot disrupt the colouristic harmony of your room. In fact, it can only strengthen this harmony if the interior is colourful. Transparent furniture is the salvation for small apartments! With the ability to see through the objects, your furniture is virtually absent. Therefore, it does not appear to steal any space from your room. In short, the transparent furniture is apparent only as an apparition.

LEATHER FURNITURE: The Pros and Cons EASY TO CARE FOR. In order for leather furniture to not lose its aesthetic characteristics, it is sufficient to simply clear it of dust. VARIETY IN THE COLOUR SCHEME. Today, you can order leather furniture of any colour. For example, a leather sofa with the design of an iguana or crocodile looks very unusual and stylish.

CONS PRICE. Good quality leather furniture is quite expensive. If your financial status is in good shape to support your plans, ensure the furniture is of good quality. DOUBTFUL NATURALNESS. In order for the leather to maintain a good condition, it undergoes intensive chemical processing – tanning. With this processing, a poisonous chromium compound is released. These compounds enter the leather and remain there although the producers state that they are unable to enter the atmosphere and therefore pose no risks to the person.

L

eather components in the interior automatically give a respectable status to the owner. For the creation of such an image, many people eagerly empty their wallets. However, is the leather creation worth the money that you have to spend on it? Is status the only reason of why people choose natural material for their furniture?

PROS STATUS. There is no point of discussing this topic in depth but it is essential to list it as an advantage as no other furniture is able to create a note of luxury in the interior with such ease.

12

ALL ABOUT HOME

COMFORT. Leather is always pleasant to touch. Although the surface may initially seem cold, it will soon match the body temperature of its occupant. In the summer, it will be a nice way to cool off while in the winter, the leather will offer you all of its warmth. DURABILITY. Despite stereotypes, leather furniture is much more durable than any other. For leather that underwent special treatment, covers are unnecessary. Due to the fact that leather furniture is practical and easy to care for, it is commonly found in offices. MOISTURE RESISTANCE. Leather furniture will absorb liquids, but not nearly as fast as fabric covers. Most importantly, act quickly and wipe up any spills.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

SYNTHETIC DYES. The neutral colour scheme is harmonious with only three colours: black, beige, and brown. Natural dyes fade quite quickly; therefore, leather furniture is covered in strictly synthetic dyes which do not have the best effect on the person’s health. A leather couch will not be able to be covered with a blanket and if sleeping on it, the bed sheets will constantly slide off. For this reason, if you plan to have guests for a sleep over, consider obtaining transformable furniture. Leather furniture absorbs various smells. In fact, the furniture itself may not smell too pleasantly when new. Leather furniture, like any object, has its pros and cons. There is not a single element with only pros or cons. Therefore, the choice is ultimately yours.

A Peek into the World of Window Coverings by Audrey Conrad

S

heers, drapes or blinds? There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to window coverings. It’s an undervalued and overlooked home essential. Without them, a room looks and feels unfinished. But as much as we want to put fashion at the forefront, function takes precedence. As a window covering designer, clients often ask me to explain what window covering options are best. My answer starts with a question: what is your goal? The most common reason people dress their window is for privacy. Beyond that, are you aiming for darkness? Diffused daylight?

14

ALL ABOUT HOME

A decorative touch? Once you figure out what your needs are, you can tackle the task of choosing the right window treatment style for your space. Here are three common types of window coverings, each serving a specific purpose. Black-out curtains: need darkness during the day-time? These are a perfect choice for a baby’s room, or for shift workers who need some shut-eye during daytime (and daylight!) hours. A floor-to-ceiling curtain with a black-out back will block out most light and all views. Another bonus is that a heavy curtain, when closed, helps to insulate interiors, keeping rooms cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. This heavy window covering is also a popular choice for a home theatre - for darkness and better acoustics!

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Roller shades: these are ideal for the modern minimalist with a view, and a popular choice in condos and contemporary style homes. When rolled down, this window covering option is clean and crisp looking, and provides total privacy. Rolled up, it’s out of sight and out of mind, leaving you to enjoy your unobstructed vistas. Sheers: their light and airy appeal is a classic choice and a favourite. Sheers provide some low-level privacy that’s perfect for public spaces like a living or dining room, while inviting natural light and a hint of the outside view. TIP: A floor-to-ceiling, wall-towall white sheer will actually amplify the room’s natural light. Panels: these are a great addition to any window, whether for practical or aesthetic purposes. Panels frame your windows and

punctuate the views, while adding a pop of colour or pattern as desired. Functional panels need to be fuller with more fabric, but can be drawn closed for privacy and darkness. For decorative purposes, side panels require less material and are thus cheaper, but strictly ornamental. Check out decorating magazines and blogs, and take note of what appeals to your sense of style. If you still aren’t sure which option is best, don’t hesitate to consult an expert.

Custom window coverings aren’t cheap, but they are well worth the investment. Whether you opt for ready-made or custom window coverings, work with a reputable window design firm to ensure you get the right design solution for your space.

CAUTION - DEAL BREAKER! Part One

H

ello, I’m Natalia Slobidker! I am a professional fulltime realtor and certified negotiations expert. I specialize in real estate pre-sales, sales strategy development and keeping real estate transaction risks at a minimum. My mission: minimum stress – maximum benefit, in any real estate transaction. Today my article is useful to both buyers and sellers. We will be talking about the so-called “deal breakers,” otherwise known as factors which have the potential to cause a client to refuse a property they otherwise like. They can be objective or subjective, inspired by superstition or urban legends. All of them, however, share the power to negate any other advantages of a house, causing the deal to fall through. Given my extremely conservative approach to buying a house, as well as the principle of “hoping for the best but preparing for the worst,” I always tell my clients that the only house to buy is one that can be sold should the need arise; even in a weak market, even the day after closing. Sometimes the sales speed is more important than price. In such a case, a house with a “deal breaker” becomes an anchor, dragging you into a sea of problems.

If the powerline is within sight when standing on the porch or in the backyard, it can be a concern for potential buyers. Some sources claim that radiation from high-voltage lines is carcinogenic, meaning it contributes to the emergence and development of cancer cells. I’m not a doctor and can neither confirm nor deny this. However, I do know that many flee from such houses as if from fire.

Factor #2 – Proximity to streets with heavy traffic If the entrance or exit to the house is on a busy street, it is likely that people with young children and/or animals (or future plans of such), view this as a potential hazard and refuse to consider it. If the backyard overlooks a busy street, that means noise and exhaust fumes – the opposite of the ideal “piece of nature in the city. ”This factor will push away many people. If you already own such a house, I would advise planting as many trees as possible along the fence leading to the busy street. This will visually conceal it and also absorb some of the car emissions.

day which spread around the house. What happens when the walls are mould-infected for a month? Mould spores are inhaled, deposited in the lungs, absorbed through the skin, and get into the food. Common side effects include asthma, pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, cough, skin rash, upset stomach, headaches, and nosebleeds. I must say, this list should be more than enough to make people flee from such a house at breakneck speed. If you suspect that your house has mould, don’t try to get rid of it the “old-fashioned way.” Call in an inspector who specializes in finding airborne mould spores. Then, if the results come back positive, call professionals who guarantee results. Getting rid of mould is unquestionably a benefit to your family; moreover, it saves you from potential problems during sales. Additionally, consult with experts on what preventive steps to take so that the mould stays away for good. Often, it’s just poor ventilation and the problem is solved by an upgrade.

Factor #4 – Marked houses

Factor #3 – Mould

So what are these “deal-breaking” factors?

Factor #1 – Powerline

Mould can be visible or hidden behind the walls or under the floors. Nonetheless, even when not visible, it can give off a characteristic odour or, unexplainably, cause dryness in the mouth and coughing. Unfortunately, the problem of mould is much uglier than its appearance. Just consider the fact that 1 m2 of mould produces billions of spores per

You would be surprised, but even in today’s highly technological world, people are still prone to superstitions and fears; some with good reason, some not. For example, the vast majority of people will not buy a house where a murder or suicide occurred, or one in close proximity to such a location. Further, it is unlikely that people will be interested in a home that is

rumoured to be haunted or where a child disappeared. Furthermore, nine out of ten people are afraid to deal with a house where marijuana had ever been grown in. Despite the consequences of this activity having been addressed long ago, it will remain marked as a “grow house.” If you are selling a house, you are required to notify the potential buyer about anything that can be regarded as a stigma.

Factor #5 – Oil tank for heating

houses still use these tanks for heating. Unfortunately, Ontario has one of the lowest standards for oil tank’s wall thickness. This entails a number of issues, which can cost the homeowner TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. For example, you may find that you cannot insure the recently-purchased house since many insurance companies refuse to insure houses that use this method of heating due to the potential environmental problems. If there is no insurance on the house, you may be denied financing. Consequently, this may result in a lawsuit and loss of deposit. You may also find that the tank was buried, that its extraction will cause environmental problems, and its removal can cost 30-40 thousand or more! Further still, there may complaints and lawsuits from neighbours, whose land may be at risk due to a leaking and/or rusted tank.

This factor is particularly relevant for buyers in Toronto because so many old

Be extremely careful if you want to sell such a house. There are a number of procedures that you must do, so that you are not held liable later.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to cover all potential hazards and risks for both buyers and sellers in one article. I will continue this list in the following issues. DECORATIVE PILLOWS: How to Make the Right Decision MATERIAL If there are children or pets in the home, it is not recommended to purchase pillows made of material that requires constant care, such as silk or velvet. Although simpler material does not look as luscious, it is more durable and long-lasting. It is important to find out if the pillows are subject to laundry or dry cleaning. Even if the tag indicates that the pillow may be put into the laundry machine, it is best to clean them by hand. This way, the colour will last longer and there is less chance to rip the pillow.

SIZE

C

hoosing the final accents such as rugs, pillows, and decorative accessories in the interior is extremely important. Quite frankly, it may seem that buying pillows is a task that one should not pay much attention to. It seems simple, especially with the vast amount of options available in stores of different colours, sizes, forms, and designs. However, do not underestimate the importance of the pillow as an accessory. In this article, we offer several pieces of advice that will make the task of purchasing the right pillow easier and informed.

tial to decide how many pillows you need and set a budget. On average, an armchair requires one or two pillows and a couch three to five – depending on the size of the furniture.

Generally, the size of decorative pillows varies from 35 to 50 cm for square pillows and 30-40 by 40-65 cm for rectangular pillows. You have to consider whether you want to obtain all pillows in the same form or make a mix of different styles. For a modern interior, a universally-styled pillow is best whereas for a traditional or eclectic interior, a variety of forms, colours, and sizes can be used.

PRICE The question of the price arises when decorating any interior. Rightly so, the first thing that you should consider is the budget. The price of decorative pillows can greatly vary, according to the style. For example, pillows simple in design found in stores will be significantly cheaper than those ordered individually and made of expensive, luxurious material. It is essen-

COLOUR AND DESIGN When considering the colour and design, concentrate on the following five schemes: cold, warm, neutral, neutral with accents, and colourful.

PILLOWS CAN BE DIFFERENT Prior to selecting pillows for your room, pay attention to several elements. Pillows are important objects, with a unique style and colour scheme. For example, for a living room, you must first decide on what floor you want, main furniture, pictures, rugs, portraits, etc. The pillows and other small accessories are chosen last and according to the style of the interior. Of course, an exception is when you already have the pillows and simply need to incorporate them into a new interior. In this case, they will become the central aspect.

COLD COLOUR SCHEME In order to choose a favourite colour scheme, it is enough to simply take a look inside your closet. The clothes will provide you with the answer. If most of your clothes are tones of green, blue, violet, or grey,

then consider choosing pillows of a cold colour scheme. There is no doubt that the walls, floor, and furniture will also be in a similar style. However, keep in mind that if choosing the cold colour scheme, you are limiting your choices of the “perfect” pillow. Nonetheless, this option has its advantages. This is the simplest method of creating a harmonious interior. The colours are similar and work very well together.

WARM COLOUR SCHEME If you are unsure what colour scheme to choose, take a look outside your window. If you live in a warm environment, it is best to decorate your interior using the cold colour scheme in order to create a refreshing atmosphere. However, if you live in cold climates, you can easily “warm” your home with colours of the warm scheme: red, orange, yellow, and brown. Once again, this type of option also limits your choices.

NEUTRAL COLOUR SCHEME If you like all shades of white, grey, or brown, then you should worry about the design of the pillow rather than its colour. Monotone pillows will not attract attention although

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

you can achieve an effect if using the light and dark tones of neutral colours properly. You will have to play with the texture of the fabric.

NEUTRAL COLOUR SCHEME WITH AN ACCENT If you choose the neutral colour scheme, it is a good idea to add several bright pillows. Two colours will be enough; for example, green and orange. The interior will shine with new colour yet at the same time, you will not feel redundancy. If the furniture is of a neutral tone, you can bravely play around with the colour of the pillows.

MULTI-COLOURED PILLOWS If monotone options do not appeal to you, choose colourful pillows. However, be careful as you can easily make the interior overwhelming. It is best to choose one bright colour and make the rest of the pillows to be softer tones and less intensive. The amount of pillows should be reasonable; this will allow any corner of the room to transform into a wonderful comfort zone where you can escape and relax for an hour or two.

ADD CREATIVITY TO YOUR INTERIOR WITH NICHES

F

urniture, curtains, all other forms of decorations, as well as the use of different materials, change the interior of a premise beyond recognition. The appearance of the room, along with its design, directly depends on its geometry which can be refined with a wall niche. A niche is a kind of decorative recess in a wall through which the interior of the room can change completely! This decorative technique was discovered long ago, but it was seldom used until the introduction of drywall. The modern interior allows niches to take any shape and size; everything depends on the taste and desire of the owner.

If you are concerned about an increase in perceivable space, drywall decorative niches will yield the best results. The recess of various forms in the wall is exquisite and very attractive. If properly planned and executed, even a single niche can make the room look much more spacious. Such modifications accentuate the individuality of the room, and can subsequently become the most used part of the interior. The usefulness of the decorative niche is one of its biggest assets. Photos, souvenirs, various figurines, and vases with flowers can all be arranged on several levels in the niche. It can even fit a small aquarium or terrarium. You can arrange a

niche in the form of a panoramic picture by creating a spectacular composition of a number of decorative items. Stained glass made by skilled craftsmen is a very fitting addition to a niche. The colour choice of the glass for the niche is very important. Typically, niches are painted in a similar or identical tone as the walls of the room. It can also be a good idea to use the contrast principle; bright walls can be complimented by the darker colours of the niche and vice versa. However, it should be kept in mind that using very dark shades for the niche can create the illusion of a hole in the wall. The appearance of the niche is ultimately dependant on the lighting of the room which can do wonders for the atmosphere of the interior, creating one of comfort and peace. With their help, it is possible to craft the most unique interiors that will perfectly match the aesthetic tastes of the residents.

PLAYING CLEAN-UP: How to Help a Child Organize Toys

T

he child’s room is a world of its own. It is the place where children rest, play, learn, and laugh. Every parent knows the difficulty of getting their child to organize their room. Instead of making this task stressful and troublesome, let’s try to make cleaning an interesting game which develops into a useful habit.

THE HANGING POCKET A small crossbar, attached to the wall at the right height, will become an ideal soft storage area for books, paintings, albums, and notebooks. A hanging pocket is easy to clean and organizing it takes only a minute. The child can place all paper-related activities in this pocket and resume the artwork with ease the next day.

THE TOY NET A simple and ordinary net may become a very useful element in cleaning up. It is easy to attach and use. However, it is important to establish that stuffed toys will be stored here, not dirty shirts. This is the time to use your talent as a teacher and mediator.

the help of an open shelf, you can separate not only parts of the child’s room but also the living room. This will make the task of looking after the kids easier. In addition, soft baskets labelled with a sign or colour, is an ideal way to organize various toys.

OPEN SHELVES

MORE BASKETS

Creating a separate work place for your child is a great idea, especially if the room is not standardly designed. Furthermore, with

An elegant accessory of the interior – baskets with lids or handles (or without either) – will replace chests and dressers. What is

the advantage? It is easy to manage baskets – use the vacuum and a damp cloth. Most importantly, the little ones will be able to easily lift an empty basket which makes them the players of their own game.

ADDITIONAL POCKETS If you want your children to have the habit of looking after their things, start from minor details. Cloth pockets on the interior of the closet door are an effective replacement of a clothes basket or drawer. Folding clothes will be mastered later, for now let your child learn to sort his or her clothes in the corresponding pockets and not worry about how to do it properly, like mom. In the future, this skill will help organize a comfortable closet! Lastly, remember that what we input in our kids will rebound. All it takes is creativity and a few hours with the ruler and hammer to create an interesting and comfortable interior which will transform the process of cleaning up from a necessary routine to a captivating game.

Frills and Thrills: Tips for Choosing Great Fabric for the Home

Will the piece experience “wear and tear?” Look for durable, tightly-woven materials with a high thread-count. These are excellent quality fabrics that will stand up to use and abuse! Will it be used by small (and sticky) children, or pets? Consider real or synthetic leather, which is easy to wipe clean. There are some great stain-resistant fabrics out there as well.

f you take a moment to observe the interior in your home, you will notice that fabric is a dominant element. Ranging from window treatments and upholstery, to floor coverings, pillows and bedding, fabric gets a lot of coverage. It should also get a lot of consideration. As a designer, I can say that function should always precede fashion. By that, I mean that

before picking up the swatch book, think about what the fabric is for and how it will be used.

UPHOLSTERY Your seated guests deserve some special attention, and using the right upholstery is the way to do it. Even an old piece of furniture can be made “new” after a day or two with your local upholsterer. When selecting upholstery material, ask yourself:

Am I really a pattern person? For a large-scale piece like a sofa, you may be tempted to take the pattern route. But remember that the upholstery will not be cheap, so it pays to take the road most travelled. Patterns tend to be dictated by the trend du jour, and what’s “in” today could be “out” tomorrow. A safe bet is a solid colour; your furniture will surely pass the test of time.

WINDOW TREATMENTS Windows do not experience much “wear and tear,” so when selecting the right fabric for your window coverings, choose based on weight rather than durability. A sheer

If you’re itching to incorporate the hottest hues and trending patterns into your home while keeping costs in check, your accent fabrics are the place to do it. What is the Dirtiest Item in the Home?

f you think that the toilet is the dirtiest item in your home, you are mistaken. The main danger hides in the kitchen! Where are the four dirtiest items that we use on a daily basis located in the house?

gle use. This way, you can be sure that your hands will be clean.

You would be surprised that recent studies show that the majority of microbes and dirt is not in the toilet, bathroom, or lobby but rather in the place where we most often wash and clean – the kitchen! The problem is not that people neglect the rules of hygiene but that they do not notice that it is to the kitchen that we bring products and when dealing with them, invite unwanted microbes.

Do not save money on dishwashing sponges. For every five centimeters of its area, there can be up to ten million microbes.

DANGER: KITCHEN TOWELS Specialists from the University of Kansas in the United States declared kitchen towels to be the dirtiest item in the home. We constantly use it to dry our hands and after several days, the damp fabric becomes an appealing site for bacteria. How do you deal with this problem? Acquire a “weekly” set of towels so that you will have a fresh one every day. Wash them in hot water and be sure to iron them – most bacteria cannot handle temperatures above 65 degrees Celsius. Another solution is to replace towels with napkins for a sin-

DANGER: DISHWASHING SPONGE

How do you deal with this problem? Hygienists recommend that you wash the sponge on a daily basis in 65 degrees Celsius temperature. You can also place it in a microwave. Studies show that after two minutes in the microwave, 99% of bacteria die. Be careful, however, as some sponges can contain plastic and are not suitable for a microwave.

DANGER: THE CUTTING BOARD Surprisingly, the cutting board is about 200 000 times more dirty than the toilet seat! According to hygienists, it is safer to cut vegetables on the toilet seat than on the cutting board itself. How do you deal with this problem? First of all, abide by the following rule: have separate boards for raw meat and vegetables. It is preferable to have a third board for any

other products. Secondly, plastic boards do not absorb water or vegetable juice; thus, from a hygienic perspective, they are preferred over wooden boards. Lastly, do not forget to periodically wipe the board with antibacterial substances.

DANGER: KITCHEN CLOTH British virologists identified the champion in dirt collection: the kitchen cloth. One out of every four studied cloths was infected with E.coli – bacteria capable of causing severe food poising. After several usages, the cloth becomes a perfect residence for various unwanted inhabitants. The micro particles left from food create an ideal and nourishing environment for microbes. A warning sign of this is a distinctive unpleasant smell – no doubt familiar to you. How do you deal with this problem? You can leave the cloths in a disinfectant overnight, boil them, or thoroughly dry them after use. However, there is a simpler solution: replace the cloths with paper towels. It is best if they are produced in a special mixture. Such a product is available from the brand Amway Home and is called “wet wipes for the kitchen.” They do not contain alkali or chlorine bleach and are therefore safe for the hands. They are very easy to use – simply wipe the surface and you are ready to go!
