A Showcase in the Home: Assembling a Display

Q

uite recently, showcases were not wanted in the interior due to the argument that they resemble heavy “walls.” But the time of cheap minimalism has passed and beautiful materials – such as porcelain and coloured crystal – that one does not want to store in closed cupboards have come into style. Showcases themselves have also changed – now they are exquisite cabinets made of a variety of materials and an enormous colour palette.

WHAT TO PUT ON DISPLAY IN THE SHOWCASE? A showcase is a universal storage space. There are perhaps two most important rules: first, the content of the showcase must coordinate with the interior and second, the items on display must not be too small or too large. This is a sort of pedestal where the items must be chosen to be in harmony with the interior and themselves. For this reason, it is best to attain porcelain and coloured crystal in a colour that corresponds to your interior. By hiding books or photo

albums under the glass of a showcase, you can forget about dust while the showcase will add comfort and elegance to the interior. Besides books, you can showcase photos or other decorative accessories dear to your heart. If you are a passionate collector of statuettes, model cars, or paper-mache masks, then the showcase becomes and irreplaceable article of furniture in your home. It is priceless in that it allows you to effectively display your collection while at the same time preventing it from collecting dust. This is also applicable to those who love to bring home souvenirs from foreign countries. Your “trophies” will always be visible to serve as a reminder of your adventures.

WHERE TO DISPLAY? Tall display cabinets look effective in pairs. Place them in symmetry relative to a couch, TV zone or doorway; this will make the interior respectable. Shorter models the sizes of a chest are better placed in spacious interiors; otherwise they will lose their purpose. It is possible to view items in the chest without bending down only from a set distance.

STYLE AND MATERIAL The showcase is a very popular element of the interior; thus, you can attain it in any material ranging from the common wood to metal and even plastic. You should not experience any difficulties in choosing a model. Of course for classic interiors, wooden showcases work best. In this case, the glass can be made in a decorative layout and interesting bevel. For more modern interiors, showcases made from only glass will look very effective. These models are often accompanied by internal lighting that makes it seem even more “lightweight.” This type of showcase is ideal for small spaces where every meter counts. Most importantly, do not use such a showcase in an interior where there are small children and always choose strained glass – this will help keep you and your relatives safe from potential injuries.

COLOURFUL DOORS IN THE INTERIOR The doors that we encounter in interiors are often black or white – rarely any other in colour. In reality, coloured doors are very interesting especially if an interior has multiple doors.

SAY “YES!” TO COLOURFUL BUILT-IN FURNITURE Converting a narrow, long corridor from boring and dull into original and functional is much easier than you think! To achieve this, you can simply install bright built-in storage systems into the walls. You can experiment with colours in the built-in kitchen appliances. Two popular colour options for built-in furniture are cherry and lime green. As a result, you can end up with an effective interior that will brighten your mood with its bright colours.

A COLOURFUL INTERIOR WITHOUT FANATICISM

Bright Colours? YES! YES! YES!

O

ne of the most common arguments used by people who oppose the use of bright colours is that there is a high chance that the colour will quickly become irritating and will get on the nerves of the people living in the interior. In reality, however, a correctly chosen colour palette will not only avoid being boring, but it will also highlight the originality and elegance of the interior without crossing the thin line between essential and excessive.

AN UNCONVENTIONAL APPROACH: A COLOURFUL CEILING When planning the design of an interior, it is important to first of all decide what role the ceiling will play. It is not mandatory to make it white – even in the smallest spaces. Colour will bring individuality into the interior and allow it to express itself. Light walls

Without a doubt, enriched colours look effective but they also possess a powerful emotional charge. For this reason, it is important to maintain a balance of bright and neutral tones. It is best to entrust experimenting with colours to professional designers – too many bright colours can become overwhelming and even negatively impact the health of the inhabitants of the “colour palette.”

and floors, and the textile of the bedding will make for a comfortable atmosphere in the bedroom while the bright ceiling will emphasize originality.

WORKING WITH THE WALLS It is best to experiment with the colour of walls in large apartments and houses. Painting the walls of one room in a bright colour while the other rooms are of a neutral tone will make your interior dramatic. Moving from restrictive to bright colours from room to room will allow you to experience a range of different emotions that will surely remain fresh for years to come. An original option is to use several bright and neutral shades that work harmoniously together when painting the walls. Walls of a cold shade will make the interior seem more spacious while warm tones will associate with happiness, create a trusting atmosphere and promote socialization.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

When choosing a colour for the full or partial finish of an interior, you have to consider its individual characteristics, starting from its impact on the person and the associations that it causes and ending with its compatibility with other colours in the interior. Blue is associated with coolness, freshness and the sea but it also has the potential to make the interior seem smaller. Yellow is quite ambiguous. It will help make the room spacious and is the symbol of the sun, richness and well-being yet at the same time it is the colour of alarm and betrayal. Bright red traditionally symbolizes passion but can also be associated with aggression. When using orange, it is essential to consider its ability to make the interior seem narrower. A rich green colour is quite popular in modern interiors. In regards to optical illusions, it is completely neutral and provides calmness and serenity.

GENDER IN THE INTERIOR - The Man and Woman’s Perspectives

P

sychologists have often wondered if there are more male or female elements in the home. Although many people do not think about this, professionals are able to instantly feel the character of your home. Every interior has a “gender.” Primarily, this depends on the person who planned the design of the home. Not surprisingly, this tendency closely reflects the character of the home owner. The problem arises when one partner tries to adjust everything to their liking, without including the character of their other half. Psychologists claim that this will make your partner uncomfortable in the home; they will feel foreign and accordingly, offended. It is recommended to solve this problem during celebratory days, such as March 8th or Valentine’s Day.

In order to decide which partner put in more effort into the interior, you can take a simple test. This test consists of several questions that will provide you with the answer to your most important one. If the results show a majority of “Yin” characteristics, then the interior is “male.” On the other hand, if there are more “Yang” characteristics, the interior is “female.” The style of the interior also varies accordingly. For example, if “Yin” is dominant, the interior is likely to be in the minimalistic, high-tech, or strict classical style. On the contrary, “Yang” being dominant suggests a Baroque, country, or eclectic style. As you may know, the Baroque style involves castle-like interiors, country is more rural, and eclectic is the combination of elements that seem inharmonious. Designers are confident that the main elements of décor in any interior are the

accessories. These include various vases, statuettes, small chests, and so on. If the home has many plants and flowers that does not mean that a particular gender dominates. In fact, this means that the male and female characters are mixed and in balance. Exclusively male elements in the interior include bright colours, an armchair with a tall back, and the proper form of furniture (for example, of a wardrobe). Exclusively female elements include small details and accessories, the arrangement on the shelves, and a banquette with figurative legs. You will notice the difference between these interiors instantly. In this situation, it is essential not to overdo the interior as to avoid future conflicts. Do not forget that your home belongs to the entire family and every member should feel comfortable and at home.

HOW TO CHOOSE CURTAINS CORRESPONDING TO THE DESIGN OF THE INTERIOR

P

ractically every residential building has windows that allow light and fresh air to enter. The dĂŠcor of this particular architectural element plays an important compositional role in the interior of a room. The most common decorative accessory for the window is textile curtains. For every designer route, there are certain criteria for choosing curtains:

als include jacquard, brocade and highdensity silk. The draperies can be accompanied by decorative lambrequins and garters.

COUNTRY. This route of dĂŠcor involves curtains lightly decorated with natural fabric of a flower or grid design. Further, the curtains can have elements of knitting and ruffles of various kinds.

CLASSICAL. Elements made in this MINIMALISM. This type of style restyle must have proper geometrical forms and distinct symmetry. Common materi-

from firm matte fabrics of a single colour that do not make folds.

HIGH-TECH. Curtains made in this style are distinguished by the simplicity of their cover and functionality. They are made of textiles of a rough nature; eyelets or rivets are often used as decorations for these curtains. It is worthwhile to remember that curtains are not only an important decorative detail, but also a form of protection from bright sunlight and outside attention. As such, they must be functional and practical for use.

How to Change the Interior with Photo-curtains

A

beautiful interior is essential as a well decorated home brings joy to the eye with its original designs. Even the weekdays become more bearable and comfortable. One of the unique ways to make your interior look creative is with the help of photo-curtains. The distinctiveness of these curtains is that you can project just about anything on them – starting from paintings of famous artists and ending at your personal photographs. This allows flexibility of choice that will suit your particular interior. Nonetheless, there are a few types of photo-curtains that occupy the peak in popularity and are often in high demand.

CLASSICAL This type of curtain is made of a special fabric that allows images to be projected on it with the help of modern technologies. The projected image is as clear as the original. Lovers of nature are able to enjoy beautiful sceneries while passionate travelers have the opportunity to display images of European cities such as London or Paris and enjoy the view.

JAPANESE CURTAINS WITH PHOTO-PRINT This model differs from the classical in that it is made not from a whole material but from vertical stripes that are attached to a rail-like cornice. These curtains are called photo-blinds. You will be able to see the full projection only in the case that these curtains are completely closed. Every vertical stripe has a special compressor that protects it from damage and deformation. It is due to this unique feature that the image on closed curtains is clear, without distorted areas. The material for these curtains can be fabric or specialized paper. The option of paper is

suitable for those who seek to create an atmosphere of a Japanese minimalist style in the home. It should be noted that Japanese curtains can be used not only to frame windows, but also to create boundaries between rooms. This enables the curtains to become a method to easily and effectively change the space in the interior. A projection on such a curtain will create an extraordinary atmosphere of comfort and cosiness.

ROLLING PHOTO-CURTAINS One of the unique features of these curtains is their ability to be vertically adjusted. Such curtains do not separate horizontally; rather, they can be lifted upwards like a roll. The material for these types of curtains creates a “blackout. Essentially they are made of layers of polyether, flame-resistant fabrics. If these curtains are fully lowered, there will be absolute darkness in the room due to the thick material that they are made of. Hence, this is an ideal option for the bedroom. Furthermore, these curtains can come with a photoprint that will truly transform a window into a realistic painting. Another variation of photo-curtains is the Roman style which also lifts vertically but in a set of equal folds. For these curtains, it is best to choose a repeating ornament that will look harmoniously even when the curtains are folded. Photo-curtains are a universal solution in interior design as they allow a choice of colour, texture, and photograph for any type of room.

THE LAWS OF CHOOSING A COLOUR FOR THE FLOOR

THREE PLAYERS – THE FLOOR, FURNITURE AND DOORS

W

hen creating your interior, it is very important to choose the correct floor colour – this “grey eminence” of the interior will surely play a significant role. The proper combination of the colour of the walls, doors and floor can help achieve just about any effect from widening to lengthening the space. You do not have to guess as the laws of colour combinations have been developed by designers long ago. Simply take advantage of their advice in order to bring harmony to the interior in your home.

LAWS OF CHOOSING COLOUR The colour diapason of the floor and doors is quite limited compared to the wide range of choices for wallpaper or paint for the walls. Nonetheless, when you visit a home décor store, you will see a respectable choice of laminate colours, parquet boards, cornice and tiles. First of all, determine whether you want a light or dark floor. Both options can be advantageous if used in the proper interior and design scheme.

12

ALL ABOUT HOME

WHAT EFFECT DOES THE FLOOR COLOUR CREATE? A bright colour is good at reflecting light and visually enlarging the interior. Furthermore, it gives the room a sense of tidiness in combination with the light shade of the walls. It is a universal solution for the living room or bedroom. However, if you combine the light floors with walls of a cool tone, you can achieve an uncomfortable atmosphere. This is especially relevant to rooms in the northwest part of the home. A dark shade means stability, style and bright contrast with the condition that they are mixed with bright walls, furniture and other elements of décor. Using contrasting accessories of the shade of the floor on a bright background is harmonious but this option is only suitable for rooms that get sufficient sunlight. One of the latest trends is a game of contrast, when a white floor is combined with almost black furniture or vice versa. The same can be said in regards to doors contrasting with the floor. Such techniques would negate the possibility of excessiveness of white or of black’s severity.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

How can you correctly choose the colour of the floor and skirting if you already have the furniture? How do you choose doors in the same colour as the floor or contrasting colours? These are applicable questions as such elements of the finish of your apartment are not planned to be changed throughout many years.

THE COLOUR OF THE FURNITURE AND FLOORS The obvious and primary rule for this pair: the floor must be at least two shades lighter than the furniture, or at least noticeably darker. In the worst case, your furniture will “disappear” on the background of a similar coloured floor. Put a contrasting carpet on the floor and the problem of the floor and furniture being of the same colour will be resolved. Modern technologies allow the bravest fantasies to come to life. However, remember that flashy floor designs can quickly go out of style so it is best to stop at a classical choice of floor covering for your home or apartment. To avoid mistakes, try using online programs that help you choose the colour for your interior.

A Goal without a Plan is Just a Wish

ou just got the keys to your new home or decided to finally proceed with that long overdue renovation, so what’s next? When we meet with our clients for the first time, we discuss their wish lists and watch their eyes light up as they describe their future space. I am going to share some valuable advice for you to keep in mind when looking to work with a designer.

Rule #1: Do your research. “What is your budget?” As a professional Interior Design Firm, we know that the budget will be determined by the scope of work, construction challenges, finishes and so many other factors but it’s interesting to hear what our clients think their dream spaces will cost them. Before getting involved in a new custom build or renovation, it’s important to have realistic expectations for your budget. Visit home and trade shows. Talk to suppliers regarding appliances you’re interested in, kitchens and countertops, hardwood and tile. Put

actual figures against this list and you’ll find yourself enlightened just by doing a little bit of homework. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to bring in the experts. Another piece of advice is to consider saving money for the unexpected - we recommend setting aside 10-20 percent of your budget. If you ultimately do not need it then you can put it towards a splurge item.

Rule #2: Hire professionals. This is your home and you wouldn’t hand it over to just anyone. Hire a Designer! The value we bring to a space is so much more than making sure you’ve chosen the right shade of white for your trim or blue for your walls. A professional Interior Designer will provide you with creative solutions to maximize your cubic footage, consider traffic flow patterns, functional furniture layouts, millwork solutions, determine how to effectively light your space, consider special electrical requirements, suggest furniture, fixtures and equipment that will perform for you and your family, and take extra care to ensure that what is designed can actually be done. “Buy the best and you will only cry once” -

Miles Redd. I often (half-joking) will say that I feel like I’ve done my job when my clients can’t make a decision without me. There is value in choosing to work with someone who has a clear vision of where you want to be. You have to trust in them and their abilities and follow through with the plan.

Rule #3: Don’t chicken out! Halfway through the build process you may start to get cold feet on that fabulous accent wallpaper your designer chose or coloured kitchen cabinets. Now and again, we will get a panicked call from our clients onsite regarding a selection that they want to change when it’s only half-done. Changing your mind midway changes budgets and timelines so avoid this. Let us help bring your home to life this winter and do what we do best. You’ll love the experience and the end result, we promise.

HOME-STAGING: The Secrets of Quick Sales

H

ello, my name is Natalia Slobidker. I am a professional realtor, interior designer and certified specialist of home-staging. This discussion will focus on the latter of those three. Home-staging is the professional preparation of real estate for sale. The sweet spot between consumer psychology, interior design and the mastery of the art of real estate is much like a science of its own. The goal of staging is to sell your real estate while maximizing the speed of the sale and the price with a minimal amount of time, money and effort spent. For starters, here are some statistics: in 2012, RESA (Real Estate Staging Association) inspected 89 houses which, on average, lasted 166 days on the market until the owners despaired and called a professional home stager. On average, these houses were sold 32 days after they were professionally prepared – that is 81% less time spent on the market!!!

ones. This interior may be cozy and of top quality but for one reason or another, potential buyers do not feel the urge to snatch up the offer. I always tell my clients that a house in which you live and a house which you sell are two separate houses. Throughout my entire career, only once did I encounter a house that could be put up on the market without changing a thing. The woman who lived there was an artist and interior designer without sentiment towards objects (read: passion to piling mounds of useless things which clutter my and your homes alike). In all other cases, the houses or apartments needed to be adjusted to an idealized standard for the typical buyer in the region where it is being sold. Naturally, it is necessary to consider the specifics of the region. Home-staging for a downtown condominium will differ greatly from home-staging in Woodbridge, which, in turn, will differ from Markham.

But there are also common rules for any region, so let me start with those.

THE FIRST AND KEY RULE IS TO DECLUTTER. The sale of a house and the following move is a great reason to go through everything that has piled up and either throw away, donate or gift the things you have been keeping “just in case”. If the year had not presented such a case thus far, then it is likely that you do not actually need the item. If it is hard to part with acquired items anyway, then pack them into boxes and put them in storage if you have space. If not, then it would be reasonable to rent a storage space for the time being that you are selling. It is cheap and extremely effective. A home with fewer items looks more spacious; the space makes it easier to breathe freely and so, naturally, a potential buyer is more likely to appreciate it. DINING ROOM IN USE

Nine of them were sold with multiple offers pending. Can you guess why? Maurice’s firm’s inspection revealed that almost 60% of buyers make their decision after having only considered ten homes. A correctly presented home makes it to the potential buyer’s list, thereby increasing its chances of sales. The same inspection claims that almost 80% of people are ready to pay more for a home where they can just move in without doing anything. This is the so-called move-in-ready house. A professional home stager will help you attain this too. So then, what is the mystery of this beast called home-staging? The need often comes up to sell your house or apartment where you had created the interior comfortable for you and your loved

CREATE YOUR OWN LUXURY “Smart” Home

I

Written by Linda Mazur

n the past when you renovated your home you not only had to plan the layout and select the finishes, but you also had to plan your “luxury” upgrades that would be hidden behind the walls. These include speakers, sound system wiring, in-floor heating, security systems and the central vac. These elements demand attention prior to addressing the drywall and flooring Despite major advancements in technology, some of these items still require planning and installation during your construction phase. A central vac system can be retrofitted into most existing homes with relative ease; if you’re already in the middle of renovations it is definitely a logical time to undertake the installation in order to minimize the volume of repairs that will be required to your drywall or flooring. One of the best brands that I like on the market today is Beam that offers a Vacuum system

that goes easily from level to level, floor to ceiling, and up the stairs with their ergonomic tools tailored to fit your life. Another important upgrade to consider during pre-renovations would be infloor heating. This is a wonderful touch of luxury to incorporate into any home. It introduces warmth and comfort under your feet. When looking to incorporate a product like this, investigate to ensure your flooring selections are compatible with in-floor heating systems. If you’re not familiar with Nest, let me introduce it to you. Nest is a programmable, self-learning, sensor-driven, Wi-Fi-enabled system for thermostats, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, security systems and more. Nest promotes energy efficiency and once programmed can sense preferred temperatures at certain times of the day. Nest offers carbon monoxide detection, various forms of home security systems including cameras and is adaptable with even your garden sprinkler systems and lights. You can control everything from kitchen appliances (depending on the manufacturer), window shades and ceiling fans for energy efficiency. One of my favorite products that is compatible with Nest is a system called Control4 Nest Integration. This coordinates all the technology in your home into one complete, sophisticated experience. With a single touch you can dim lights, turn up the heat, lock your doors, arm your security system or play music. It also allows you

to check in on your home with your smartphone from any location. While some of the upgrades to your home still require thought and planning during the renovation process, many of them are much simpler to install today. The luxury and ease of not carrying around your vacuum, having heated floors and music in every room has evolved in to the generation of the “smart” home. With just a few taps on your phone, you can deliver an enjoyable and consistently comfortable and inviting home that automatically responds to you and your ever changing lifestyle.

GLASS IN A MODERN INTERIOR: Three Myths and Facts

H

ave you ever thought of incorporating a glass floor or partition in your home? How about replacing the classic wooden table with a modern glass one? You probably did not consider this as large glass constructions tend to scare people with their fragility. However, this is a myth! The maximum incorporation of glass that we agree to is displaying a glass vase or statue on a shelf or hanging a glass mirror or panel on the walls. We stick to small forms, always being cautious about larger glass furniture. Forget any worries! Sceptics and conservators should reconsider their opinions – thanks to new technologies, today is the era of glass. Glass is reliable and safe, contrary to common belief. Let us then separate myths from facts!

MYTH: Glass is an unreliable and fragile material FACT: Glass is as durable as iron In the creation of furniture, tempered glass is used which is five or six times more durable than regular glass. A non-tempered 1m by 1m glass sheet that is 8mm thick is able to withhold 50kg but tempered glass is able to withhold 300kg. Thus, a glass tabletop is strong enough to support several people, let alone heavy items. It is even strong enough to withstand a hit from a heavy hammer. Glass shelves will likewise be able to support a home library.

Large glass constructions employ not one but several layers of durable glass. For example, a triplex is made of three layers of 8 mm thickness, each withholding 400 kg per square meter. For this reason, although glass staircases and floors seem fragile, they are not. Sceptics are also wrong about the danger of fragile glass. Even if tempered glass is broken, its pieces possess no danger as it is specially made to be without sharp edges. Moreover, a protective film is attached to the glass so that the pieces will not leave

it. If a triplex breaks, all of the pieces will remain on the polymer interlayer that holds the triplex together.

MYTH: Glass surface is very slippery

glass rough without changing its aesthetics. It will appear transparent and smooth.

MYTH: Transparent glass is dangerous as it seems invisible

FACT: You will not slip on a glass floor

FACT: This is not the case; you just have to pay attention

Whether you have a glass floor in the bathroom or kitchen, have no fear of slipping. This is thanks to the sandblasted processing of the glass surface. This process makes the

If you are still afraid of imprinting yourself into a glass door or wall, use matte or coloured glass in your interior. It will definitely not trick you!

THE SINK as an Element of Design

A

mongst plumbing appliances, there are elements that can serve as an accessory of the interior on their own. Standard and ordinary models are starting to seem dull and a lack of variety becomes aggravating – the customer demands an exclusive, stylish, and extraordinary interior. In response, the designer’s ideas do not stay in one place.

Creative and modern accessories continuously make an appearance on the market. Sinks are no exception. The leading firms, as well as those less known, are competing for the appeal of the customer by creating the most appealing sinks out of glass, wood, copper, marble or other natural stone. As a result, a variety of sinks are available to satisfy the experimental curiosity of the customer. Without a doubt, custom-made stylish sinks are able to satisfy the owner and astonish guests.

28

ALL ABOUT HOME

Generally, designer sinks are a one-of-akind accessory that you will likely not see anywhere else. The designer’s imagination tends to have no limits when it comes to designing sinks. The results can be surprising and periodically, you will need several hints to identify a decorative sink. A popular sink design is that of a broken water droplet – quite an unusual form. In fact, unusual forms have been increasingly popular in the design of sinks. Often, they are so unusual that it is difficult to describe their appearance. Besides there being a variety of options in terms of colours, there are also endless options of what images or designs to put on the sink. Whether it is a painting or abstract art, such a decorative technique is an effective and original way to present household appliances. Even such a small detail such a mesh for drainage did not escape the attention of designers.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

For instance, it can be made in the form of an ornament or depicting an image. Special attention is given to sinks for the children’s room – they differ by their smaller size, depth, and decorations of cartoon characters or favourite scenes. This option is generally applicable in private houses or daycares. Such an appliance will effectively train your child to regularly wash their hands and keep clean. Custom mini-sinks are specially made for small interiors or bathrooms. There is even a different selection of sinks designated for the cottage. This way, the small cottage on the outskirts has become a residence amongst beautiful accessories. Do you want to stand out? Do you want to have a bathroom unlike any other? It has never been simpler. Today’s vast selection of exclusive and untraditional plumbing appliances will be able to satisfy any taste.

The Seven Laws of the Décor of a Rented Apartment

I

s it worthwhile to invest personal funds into the décor of someone else’s apartment? If not, then how do you create a maximally comfortable atmosphere that will be appreciated by you, the tenant? The answer is simple: a correctly chosen décor.

1. DO NOT BE LAZY TO DECORATE First of all, we recommend that you decorate the rented apartment. Even if you plan

to live in it for only a short period of time, this step will enable you to truly enjoy your stay in your temporary home. Without any doubt, even a rented apartment deserves to be loved and respected.

2. INVEST IN UNIVERSAL PRODUCTS Generally, when you are planning to rent an apartment you count on living in it for a certain period of time but do not yet have an idea of what your next residence

will be like. Considering this factor, adjust your shopping list to accommodate universal and multi-functional models – be it furniture, textiles or lighting. Do not waste your money thoughtlessly but rather invest into a couch-transformer, folding chairs and tables, or compact coffee tables. These and other such articles of furniture complete multiple functions simultaneously and are easy to transport due to their small size.

3. TAKE CARE OF THE LIGHTING Not many tenants can brag about how correctly the lighting is organized in their interior. The best solution is to replace the existing old lighting gadgets and acquire additional fixtures. Order a stylish table lamp or an elegant floor lamp. This way, the working table and reading zone will be adequately lighted and you can easily take these companions to your new home.

4. ORGANIZE THE WINDOW OPENINGS Windows are another problematic aspect of rented apartments. But remember that regardless of their style, the most important concern is that they are clean. Upon moving in, clean the windows until they sparkle and only then worry about their décor. It is best to get rid of old curtains or blinds; return them to the landlord or store them in a box. Any new curtains, even if they are the least expensive type, will refresh the apartment and will make the interior more appealing.

5. REMEMBER ABOUT PROVISIONAL MEASURES Do you want to achieve a comfortable atmosphere in the apartment but do not want to spend money on renovations or purchasing decorative accessories? Then pay attention to the existence of other forms of finishes that are accessible to

everyone. Old photographs, awards and diplomas, concert posters and old letters – all of these elements are capable of decorating the walls of your rented apartment. Plus, you will avoid spending money!

6. ATTAIN SOFT CARPETS Regardless of how beautiful and of good quality the laminate or wooden floors are, such surfaces will be quite cold in the fall and winter period. Furthermore, the flooring in rented apartments is often damaged and this can be easily seen with the naked eye. To get rid of these damages without renovations, simply buy carpets to cover them up. Moreover, it will help you feel comfortable and warm in the cold winter months.

7. BE CREATIVE! Every person has a hobby that they willingly dedicate their free time to; whether it is painting, crafts with boards and fabric, or creating jewellery. Your hobby has a place in your interior – show your guests the results of your hard work! Does your landlord not allow you to create holes in the wall to hang your painting? Not to worry! A great alternative is double-sided tape which will be able to handle the weight of your paintings or photographs. You will be able to remove your works from the walls in mere seconds and without leaving any marks. Remember that due to artwork, the home becomes cozy and individualized.

HOW TO CLEAN the Laundry Machine

P

urchasing even the most expensive laundry machine will not save you from its sudden breakdown or clogging. To avoid this, the laundry machine should be periodically cleaned. In this article, we will tell you how to properly rid the laundry machine of froth, mildew, and dirt.

WHY DOES THE LAUNDRY MACHINE REQUIRE CLEANING? Cleaning the laundry machine is essential in maintaining it in a good condition. The plastic or metal surfaces of the machine often collect dirt and mineral sediments. Unfortunately, the development of dirt often occurs in places that are difficult to reach which makes the task of proper cleaning challenging. Over time, this can be the reason of the machine’s breakdown and as such, an expensive repair process. For this reason, it is recommended that you clean your machine at least twice a month.

of the laundry process, not getting the machine dirty over time is practically impossible. In order to clean this, a cloth soaked in warm water should be enough. For a better effect, you can add dish soap.

ant smell and if not taken care of, the breakdown of the machine.

CLEANING THE INNER TUB

Do not leave clothes in the machine for a long time after they have been washed as this damp and warm atmosphere is an ideal environment for the development of mildew. Due to this, the machine will have an unpleasant smell and will experience a decrease in productivity.

Sensing an unpleasant smell from the interior of the machine is a sign that it is time for cleaning the tub. In order to get rid of this smell, it is sufficient to fill the machine with hot water (this can be done by adjusting the machine’s cycle to hot water and turning it off as soon as the tub fills) after filling it with the substance that cleans laundry machine tubs. First, it is important to turn the cycle on for a short time in order to allow the cleaning substance to mix with the water. Followed by this, the cycle should be turned off for an hour. This easy method will help remove dirt and mildew: the source of the unpleas-
