TAKING CARE OF THE BEDROOM

LINENS It is advisable to use soft cotton bed sheets. Satin sheets are of course beautiful, but they glide too much and do not let in air. Do not use any synthetics.

ATMOSPHERE Some people believe that it is better to sleep in a cold room, but the benefits of this are not confirmed. Every person has their own temperature preferences. However, you should always avoid a dry atmosphere. In the winter, make sure that the heaters are equipped with humidifiers, or at least throw a damp towel on the battery before going to sleep. This advice is addressed primarily to those suffering from bronchitis and asthma.

LIGHTING Excess sunlight can significantly impair the quality of sleep. In the bedroom it is desirable to hang dark curtains or use a face mask.

NOISE Silence in the bedroom is an indispensable condition for restful sleep. If you are worried about noise on the street, especially on motorways, it may be worthwhile to install soundproof window frames.

CLOCK

I

n more than half of the cases of insomnia, the cause is a violation of sleep hygiene. In this regard, before jumping to medical conclusions, consider the situation in your bedroom.

BED Many people tend to sleep in the same bed for many years. If your bed is more than 10 years old, then think about replacing it with a new one. If you are experiencing back pain, try sleeping on a hard surface. However, if you have not felt relief within a couple weeks, do not deprive yourself of comfort since the benefits of this method have not been proven to slow the progression of back problems. Perhaps a mattress based on elastics will be better for your back.

2

ALL ABOUT HOME

Another factor to consider for comfortable sleep is the size of the bed. Although it seems like a trivial detail, many people choose a bed that is too small and consequently, experience disturbances in their sleep. Consider obtaining a king size bed, especially if you are sleeping with a partner.

PILLOW Try to get accustomed to sleeping on pillows that are more flat. In no event should you use a large pillow stuffed with feathers. When sleeping on such a pillow, your head is an unnaturally bent position which can lead to headaches and spine problems. Consider using special contour pillows for maximal comfort.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Many people with insomnia get a glowing electronic clock and put them near the bed. Painfully trying to fall asleep in the evening, they are always anxiously looking at the clock. An alarm clock definitely belongs in the bedroom, but if you are inclined to constantly look at it, place it an area where you will be able to hear but not see it. Often before important events, sleep is disturbed due to the fact that a person is afraid to sleep and wakes up several times a night to see if the alarm clock is working. In this situation, put two or three alarms at intervals of 5-10 minutes and your sleep will be much calmer.

WHAT TO SLEEP IN: According to doctors and psychologists, it does not matter what you sleep in. It is important for the body to breathe and for your night clothes to not interfere with the exchange of air. So if you prefer to sleep naked, go for it.

A UNIQUE INTERIOR:

P

tion arises: will such a countertop absorb impurities and dirt and if so, is it possible to get rid of them? If speaking about the concrete on its own, then yes, it does absorb everything like a sponge. The only thing that will not affect concrete is water – it will be absorbed without leaving a trace. It is nearly impossible to remove a stain from a concrete surface; if a drop of lemon juice or another acid gets onto it, an unpleasant frosted stain will remain. However, do not rush to abandon the idea of concrete in the interior. All of this applies to unprotected concrete!

CONCRETE TABLETOPS

erhaps it may surprise you to hear that concrete tabletops exist. We are so accustomed to choosing between natural and artificial stone that we completely overlook other options. Nevertheless, concrete is becoming increasingly popular in the interior as a material for countertops in the bathroom and kitchen. Concrete is an absolutely environmentally friendly material, unlike some samples of artificial stone. In this article, we will discuss the unique characteristics of such a working surface.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A CONCRETE INTERIOR By definition, concrete is a frozen mixture of binding material (usually cement), water and aggregates. Thus, the concrete tabletop consists of cement, water, sand, mineral additives (fine sand), and about 2% of organic additives. As a result, interior concrete is the same artificial stone only without added resins which recently raised questions about safety for human health.

CONCRETE TABLETOPS AND SINKS: THE BATTLE WITH STAINS

To ensure that your countertop is not afraid of vinegar, coffee drops, toothpaste, or wine, its surface should be covered with a thin layer of polymer what will conceal all pores and will not allow concrete to absorb anything. Usually, the layer of varnish is so thin (100-200 micrometers) that it is barely noticeable, especially if it has a matte, not glossy, effect. In this case, your countertop will be able to maintain its original appearance for many years.

HOW DURABLE Anyone who has dealt with concrete IS A CONCRETE TABLETOP? knows that this material has a porous structure. Consequently, a natural ques-

By appearance, concrete is a very impressive stone. The hardness and durability of this material can be compared with natural granite. Thus, chips and cracks will appear on such a tabletop only if you hit it with a hammer or intentionally attempt to damage it. However, it is not recommended to cut items with a knife directly on this surface because there is the possibility to damage the layer of varnish and expose the pores to outside contaminants.

SUSCEPTIBILITY TO HIGH TEMPERATURES You may be wondering: is it possible to put a frying pan or saucepan on a concrete tabletop immediately from the stove? Experts assure that lacquered concrete can withstand temperatures of up to 150 degrees Celsius. That is, you can place pots on this surface, but it is not recommended to place pans. If we shift our discussion to unprotected concrete, its capabilities are higher – it can withstand temperatures of up to 300 degrees. However, if you leave a hot dish on it for longer than 30 seconds, a bright spot will appear on the tabletop.

THE INTERIOR AS A REMEDY FOR DEPRESSION AND CONFLICT

A

t times, we underestimate the influence that our home’s interior has on our lives. Psychologists are confident that a poorly organized interior has the potential to provoke depression, illness and can even negatively influence the climate in the family.

THE PROBLEM OF PERSONAL SPACE First of all, it is necessary to divide the existing living space into zones by the number of people living in it. However, part of the territory must necessarily remain common not only for common use, but also for communication. Ideally, each family member is supposed to have his or her own private room, or a room to a couple. This is not always possible, so often the house is divided in other ways: screens, mobile partitions, podiums, lighting or visual zoning with the help of colour and texture of materials. The

main principle should be the same: each individual in the house has their own territory both for recreation and for work. Formally speaking, the personal space of the average person is a circle with a diameter of the distance of outstretched arms. However, in reality, we often seek to expand our territory. When distributing rooms in a new apartment, you should first of all take care of the youngest and the oldest generations because they especially need a separate room. The psychic of children has not yet settled; the psyche of the elderly, on the contrary, is shattered by age and illness. Thus, sound and visual isolation is extremely important

6

ALL ABOUT HOME

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

for them. If you have to arrange a common nursery for the children, ensure that each child has their own zone with a personal “bedroom” and “study” if possible. Your personal life should be reliably hidden from prying eyes, as that will help achieve harmony in marital relations. Sound isolation should be provided in teenagers’ rooms since they often tend to play loud music as well as in the rooms of the older generation as they appreciate silence. To do this, you can use a system of double doors from solid wood that perfectly absorb sound. If there are not enough rooms for everyone, a good way out is to organize universal nooks for rest in public areas (for example, a chair with a coffee table and a floor lamp).

YOUR TYPE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERIOR Inhabitants of one apartment differ not only in age and sex, but also in individual psychological characteristics. Over the long period of the existence of psychology as a science, many attempts have been made to classify humanity according to various criteria. In the last few years these classifications have been successfully correlated with the types of design. Thus, it is clarified that the most demanding type of personality with respect to the dimensions of personal space is a melancholic, a little less is needed for the selfish choleric, and the most unassuming in this matter is the balanced phlegmatic. According to another typology (Max Lusher) there are “multicolored” types of people, each of which has their own preferences in architecture and interior design. The “blue” type is a self-contained person who expects life first of all to be protected and values personal safety. For this individual, privacy and comfort are

the most important features in an interior. These individuals favour small rooms, alcoves, niches, low ceilings, windows with frequent binding, and soft, natural materials. The “yellow” type of person is cheerful, similar to the sun. They adore large spaces: wide windows without binding, mirrors, lots of glass and luster. The “green” type of person is strict, serious and concerned about their status in society. They like class and order: high ceilings, smart furniture, geometric grills on the doors and windows. The preferred materials are stone and metal. People of the “red” type often aspire to original solutions. They have colonnades and galleries in their homes and custom-made furniture covered with skins of exotic animals. They also tend to favour lofts and penthouses. There is another traditional classification: “physics” and “lyrics.” The former perceive the world analytically and pay much attention to detail while the latter, as creative ones, are not inclined to break up the world into parts. They do not

FOR ADVERTISEMENTS CALL (416) 477-6107

really care about design features such as shades of colour, details of décor and other “nonsense.”

COLOUR SOLVES A LOT! The consciousness of a person can be influenced with the help of colour no worse than hypnosis. There are gradations in terms of colour preferences, both by age and level of psychological development. For example, it is pointless to decorate a baby’s room in pastel colours since the perception of halftones and shades is formed much later in development. It is better to use clean and clear colors in a nursery. However, in the grandparents’ room, soft tones will be perfect. If you take into account the temperaments, for calm and balanced individuals (phlegmatic, sanguine) the colors on the beige-red scale are suitable, whereas for types with more mobile psyche (choleric, melancholic), cold colors and complex ornaments work best.

Selling or Buying: WHAT COMES FIRST?

H

ello, I’m Natalia Slobidker!

AFTER

I am a professional fulltime realtor; I specialize in real estate pre-sales, sales strategy development and keeping real estate transaction risks at a minimum. My mission: minimum stress – maximum benefit, in any real estate transaction. Today, my article will address the issues of those who plan on purchasing real estate. You must have a balanced approach to this process, regardless of whether or not it is your first time. Even with the dynamic current market, you – as prospect buyers – must resist the hype to join the fight over a home that may not fully meet your requirements. So, what does one have to take into account?

If your intention is to redesign your home, be sure to consider the following factor.

disadvantage. Quite possibly, the situation is remediable.

2. HOUSE SIZE

3. HOUSE FEATURES

3. HOUSE FEATURES

Particular features can either present as advantages or disadvantages depending on the lifestyle, age, and habits of the prospective buyer.

The simplest example is a poorly planned kitchen with old cupboards and a poorly chosen color scheme.

1. LOCATION

4. PRICE RANGE 5. PURCHASE STRATEGY

1. LOCATION Traditionally, districts are valued for their proximity to transport and good schools, which is entirely understandable. People are often willing to go for any compromise except their children’s education. Therefore, prices and demand for homes in such districts always grow faster than in others.

2. HOUSE SIZE I can safely say from observing dozens of customers that, in the eyes of the potential owner, the size of the house is not determined by a nominal square footage, but rather by the number of bedrooms and bathrooms and the size of the kitchen.

8

ALL ABOUT HOME

For example, do-it-yourself gardening enthusiasts are unlikely to appreciate an elegant, stone-paved backyard. Yet, for a couple who plan to spend minimal time on garden maintenance, a large grassy backyard will not be a pleasant addition.

Below is an example of the effect of a slight reconfiguration and change of colors: a small, seemingly-tight kitchen became large and spacious after renovations. It’s hard to believe that it is the same space before us, isn’t it? BEFORE

However, if the former couple is unable to buy the house, the latter could always alter the backyard to suit their lifestyle. This means that when evaluating a particular feature of your house, do not rush to put it down as a

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

www.aahtoronto.com

That’s why I always recommend consulting with a professional before blindly leaping into renovations. A nondescript house may become a handsome prince. The main thing is to see that potential in it. And so the notorious dilemma arises: whether to purchase a pre-renovated house — simply bring the suitcases in and begin living — or instead get a “blank slate” bought for a winning price and spend extra funds to refurbish the house how you wish. It is a very personal question. I have one recommendation in this situation. If there is a professional who can at least provide you with a rough time-and-money estimate for each specific alteration, then it would definitely make sense to hear them out. Yes, repair will be a messy inconvenience, but it’s only for a week. For years to come your life in the house will be cozy and comfortable. All of these factors determine the next criterion:

4. PRICE RANGE With today’s cheap money, many overestimate their capabilities and acquire property which stifles the hosts and leaves no

funds for other equally important aspects of housing. Working closely with mortgage specialists, I noticed that many people ask how big of a loan they can get instead of working backwards and determining specifically how much they can afford to spend on maintenance of the house (“x” dollars). House expenses will cost “y” dollars. Then, what portion of that “x-y” amount can be taken care of by a loan on a monthly basis?

The most common mistake of those buying for the first time is underestimating the cost of home maintenance in calculating their financial capacity. If you are not sure that you have taken into account all nuances, contact a professional. They will help you correctly assess your situation.

5. PURCHASE STRATEGY This is one of the most difficult moments between the realtor and client. The agent’s experience, the buyer’s comfort, and a sober assessment of the situation must align. The buyer’s financial opportunities are vital to the final decision and transaction, just as

FOR ADVERTISEMENTS CALL (416) 477-6107

important as the general situation of the market or that of one house in particular. As the topic of strategic home acquisition is interesting and multifaceted, it deserves a more thorough discussion, and I will talk about this in one of the following issues. If you do not want to or cannot wait, have questions to which you would like the utmost honest answers, if you just want to evaluate your property, or begin your search for a new one, please call me and I will gladly help you out!

5 ESSENTIAL INSTRUMENTS FOR MASTERS OF THE GRILL

T

here is a large amount of tools available for grill masters to prepare the most delicious and juicy steak that will melt in your mouth. In this article, we offer an overview of the 5 most essential ones that will help prepare the perfect ribs, steaks, hamburgers and vegetables.

1. VEGETABLE BASKET Grilled vegetables are incredibly delicious, but cooking them is no easy task. They have a tendency to fall in between the bars of the grate and so a vegetable basket will come in handy. Such baskets are made of steel, effectively transmit heat, and have wide handles. Small pores in the bottom allow the juice from the vegetables to escape and not accumulate in the basket.

2. GRILL SET In order to properly prepare the grill, you need a special set of tools. It is necessary

10

ALL ABOUT HOME

to choose tools that have long handles to protect your hands from the heat. Tools that can perform several functions, such as a spatula that also functions as a bottle opener, are priceless.

3. A TABLE FOR THE GRILL This is not merely a table, but a whole minikitchen. It is easy to install and can also be used when you are relaxing in your backyard or for a picnic on the beach. The metal frame performs several functions as it has three working surfaces and includes a table for a portable grill, two side tables, a lower shelf, holders for paper towels, and hooks for tools. When folded, such a table takes up minimal space.

4. A BOTTLE FOR THE CHICKEN You might have heard, or even tried, chicken that was cooked on a bottle of beer. Usually, it is cooked in the oven simply because you cannot pace a beer bottle on the grill.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Chicken, planted on a bottle and baked vertically, turns out juicy with perfectly crispy skin. Now you can do this on the grill – but you will need a special metal bottle with an appropriate stand. The dripping fat will fall on the tray which will not give rise to flames. As an alternative to beer, you can fill the bottle with other drinks such as wine or orange juice.

5. SMOKEHOUSE The aroma of smoked meat can truly make your mouth water, although the smoking process is long and complex. You can simplify it; or rather simulate the smell that is produced when meat is prepared on the grill. To do this, you will need a small smokehouse, which is essentially a metal box. Open the lid of the smokehouse, place wooden chips inside and install it on the grill. As the meat is cooked above, smoke rises from below. Prior to placing the chips in, you can soak them in wine, beer, or citrus juice to give the meat a particular flavour.

THE SMALL DETIALS OF A KITCHEN’S LIFE

ents require quite a lot of storage space and if you simply put them all away on one shelf, you will soon forget about the items that you have. In this case, baskets with a glass or plastic bottom are irreplaceable. They can be fixed to a special frame so that they can be moved as if they were a large drawer. Their main advantage is that they provide side access to products. Such storage systems can be built under the countertop as stand-alone cabinets or in the kitchen front which truly makes them universal. Even if you do not plan to change the design of your kitchen furniture, you can still create an ergonomic revolution. Often, it is not necessary to change designs – it is sufficient to expand the useful space inside the existing drawers and shelves to make your kitchen much more spacious. Every manufacturer has developed dozens of plug-in systems – organizers that have different schemes for placing cutlery, spice containers, cleaning products, towels, and napkins. You can even obtain special inserts for the storage of items such as medicine or cooking books. The fundamental advantage of such systems is the orderliness and flexibility of the interior, which can be easily reassembled with the help of various mobile dividers, crossbeams, rails, trays, and pallets. These organizational systems are available for drawers of all sizes and can be made from any material; from plastic to metal, aluminum, or wood.

W

e can spend plenty of time discussing the design of the facades of kitchen furniture, but the true face of the kitchen lies behind them. Of course, you should like the aesthetics of your kitchen drawers, but you will truly love them only if they are comfortable and functional. If you arrange the interior space of the kitchen rationally, you can achieve order in your cooking temple. In this article we will discuss how to make this fairy tale a reality. The modern organization of kitchen space assumes that the bulk of the pressure falls on the lower tier. In recent years, static shelves in the lower tier have been almost completely replaced by ergonomic drawers which are much more convenient to use. Modern manufacturers make a special accent on wide-format drawers in which you can store

12

ALL ABOUT HOME

just about anything; from trifles to heavy utensils. Generally, such designs are able to sustain 50-60kg. It is clear that it is inconvenient to pull such a heavy drawer out every time you need to search for something in it. Therefore, full-extension designs are used for drawers in the lower tier. It is also necessary to use anti-slip mats in storage systems with a smooth bottom to protect against excessive noise and items falling out when moving the drawer. All kinds of revolving metal baskets, “carousels,” recessed columns and half-columns with carousel mechanisms can be found in almost all leading manufacturers of kitchen equipment. Among the most fashionable “rotating mechanisms” is the cupboard of 360 degrees rotation. Such a piece of furniture would be appropriate only in spacious kitchens.

Take the time to plan the storage system in your kitchen and be rewarded with supreme order!

It is no secret that we do not limit the storage of food supplies to the refrigerator. All kinds of grains, cereals, spices, and baking ingredi-

FABRIC FROM A FAIRYTALE: UNIQUE PROPERTIES OF ORGANZA

T

he light and sparkling organza fabric instantly catches the eye. This transparent and flowing fabric is cast with silver and gold, turning an ordinary apartment into a luxurious palace. With the help of interior designers, curtains made from organza can create a celebratory and magical atmosphere in any home! They are the perfect solution to the monotonous course of everyday life.

Modern trends in textile design have raised organza to the rank of the season favourite. The unusual crisp texture of this material allows you to create the large and curvy folds that are the latest fashion trend. Note that classic soft draperies are not suitable in combination with organza; this fabric is too rough. To create a multilayered relief composition with lambrequins and garlands, it is convenient to use curled fabric that will form folds of even volume.

It is difficult to say with certainty what the best material for curtains is, but organza is definitely a suitable candidate. However, in order to appreciate all of its benefits, this material requires proper care and that you understand all of its specifics.

It is characteristic for organza to have intricate plant and abstract prints; flies, sequins, arabesques and variations on the themes of butterflies, paradise birds, stars, and heavenly bodies. In factories, the pattern is applied to the fabric in a printed manner or by etching; designer curtains are decorated by hand embroidery, artistic painting and embroidered flowers, leaves and twigs. The latest peak in fashion is perforated material and as such, organza with laser cutting is a hit in urban aesthetics.

The complex interweaving of threads found on organza fabric gives this material paradoxical characteristics: the seemingly ephemeral canvas is actually surprisingly rigid and durable. This material maintains its form, does not droop or stretch and yet it is easy to assemble into the desired layout. In the competition for the title of the best curtain fabric, organza beats many other materials: the figured draperies seem to be woven from thin air and the curvy folds do not conceal space.

14

ALL ABOUT HOME

A dynamic organza will adapt to any interior and will insure an inexperienced decorator on risky curves of fantasy. If you like the chic style, luxury and abundance, beautiful curtains made from organza fabric are exactly what

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

you need. They work well in combination with traditional curtains, or by themselves. The translucent structure of the canvas ennobles bright, saturated shades and balances the rich décor without overloading the interior. There can never be too much organza; a stretch ceiling made from this material will transform the living room into an aristocratic salon, and the bed under such a sparkling canopy will conceal the worries of the day with a gentle and dreamy haze.

Curtains from organza: qualities to use to your advantage The aesthetic qualities of organza complement its exploitive ones due to the structure of the fabric: • durable, not easy to tear; • flexible and easy to assemble into desired layout; • easily transformed into original forms; • wrinkle-free; • transmits light; • resistant to weathering; • longevity; • susceptible to cleaning detergents.

HOW TO CARE FOR ORGANZA DRAPERIES Now that we have discussed the benefits of organza, we have to take a look at the other side of the coin to become familiar with this material’s minor flaws. Rest assured, they can be easily circumvented, having mastered some of the subtleties of handling noble cloth. First of all, organza is susceptible to burning out so do not hang the curtains on the southeast side. However, if your curtains do burn out, you can easily restore the original form of the yellowed fabric with a refreshing saline bath. Prior to washing, soak the fabric in cold water for two hours at the ratio of two teaspoons of table salt for five liters and the curtains will be good as new! Before loading the curtains into the washing machine, you can add a bit of hydrogen peroxide to the cleaning detergent. Secondly, this gentle fabric should be protected from mechanical damage and high-temperature conditions. Wash organza curtains in the delicate mode up to 40 degrees without wringing. If possible, use a vertical steamer instead of an iron. If you dry the fabric in a laid-out form, ironing is not needed; it is sufficient to spray off fine creases with an atomizer. You can iron out large creases, but be sure to place a cloth pad or baking paper under the iron. Now, you are more familiar with organza and can weigh all of the pros and cons. Remember that an ideal material does not exist and if you are to choose organza for your curtains, you will need to be mindful of its proper care.

PULLING TOGETHER YOUR DREAM BATHROOM

lanning a bathroom renovation? Master en-suite or powder room? We have plenty of experience designing and renovating bathrooms, so we have some helpful advice to share that will help guide you through your bathroom design and renovation process.

First of all, be aware that bathrooms can get costly so you need to determine your budget. We find homeowners are often surprised at the cost involved in a bathroom renovation. It may be easier to justify the expense of a kitchen renovation but there are so many elements to a bathroom that need to be carefully considered. I always stress to my clients not to skimp on finishes and fixtures when renovating their master bedroom. For a “secondary” bathroom, like a guest or kid’s bath, you may not need to spend as much and can add character in budget-friendly ways. Remember the key areas that home buyers look at are the lar-

ger bathrooms and kitchen. Marble tiles, floor standing tubs, glass shower enclosures, chic vanities and fixtures are the key components to create a high-end bathroom retreat. When starting a bathroom design, you will have a lot of decisions to make. Let’s begin our discussion with the layout. Can your space accommodate a separate water closet, or separate tub and shower? Is it possible to relocate the locations of your plumbing fixtures easily? Is it worth it? How large of a vanity can you fit? Can you forgo a bathtub to give you more space? A few simple rules we keep in mind when planning a layout are: use your vanity as the focal point of the room; your freestanding tub looks best centered under a window. Once you have a layout determined you need to establish your style and feel for the bathroom. We recommend that your bathrooms are somewhat consistent in style with the rest

of the house. Determine a colour scheme. It can be fresh and airy with white cabinetry, Calcutta marble, grey tones and polished nickel accents; or warm and rich with dark flooring, walnut cabinetry, a dark accent wall and oil-rubbed bronze fixtures. The plumbing fixtures and tile design will greatly influence the feel of the room. Check out a retailer with vast knowledge and selections like SS Tile & Stone to start your design plan. Look at your plumbing fixtures, faucets, and shower fixtures and select the highest quality tubs and sinks from respected companies like Victoria + Albert, where you will find a host of styles and the latest trending finishes. Selection of products is vast from modern to traditional and now there are a variety of finishes far beyond chrome, to colours and black. The upcoming trend is stainless steel options like the “Soriano Collection” by Victoria + Albert.

FURNITURE FOR THE GARDEN

enches and tables in the shade of a sprawling garden almost always evoke a pleasant sense of tranquility. A sunny day, gentle breeze, butterflies, beautiful landscape – sounds like a fantasy but you can turn this atmosphere into reality by adequately preparing for the summer season.

DEALING WITH DEW It is fairly obvious that outdoor furniture suffers more than the furniture in the interior. Weather and temperature changes affect not only the materials of our furniture, but also the quality of our rest. You can probably agree that the feeling of going outside on a sunny day only to discover the furniture ruined by last night’s weather is an unpleasant experience. A seemingly harmless,

and even romantic, natural phenomenon such as morning dew can significantly impact the state of your furniture.

rubber gaskets; otherwise, your furniture might experience decay.

You can, of course, keep a rag ready and start the morning by wiping tables and benches. Alternatively, you can choose furniture that will get rid of the excess moisture thanks to its design. Technically speaking, the objective is to ensure unimpeded drainage; the moisture that accumulates on the surface must have access to a quick escape route. The classic solution is furniture with gaps! For example, the table top or seat can be made of thin boards with space in between them.

PLASTIC AND METAL: BEAUTY OR CONVENIENCE?

Furniture legs also need protection from moisture, especially if they are made from materials such as wood. Specialists advise the use of removable wooden, plastic, or

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Regardless of how well you take care of your furniture, its performance will continue to depend on the material it’s made from. Ideally, your furniture should be convenient to use; however, convenience does not always go hand-in-hand with a suitable design. Understand the pros and cons of each type of furniture prior to making a selection. Let’s start our discussion with plastic – the most common material for garden furniture. The popularity of this material is not accidental. Plastic has remarkable qualities: it is lightweight, not afraid of moisture, easy

to clean and inexpensive. If you like plastic furniture resembles the simple decoration of cheap street cafes and seems devoid of charm, it is worthwhile to take an interest in designer novelties in this area. Plastic is available in a large selection of colours, a variety of patterns on the backs of chairs, and the option to add décor accessories such as pillows. It is worth your consideration! After all, this material is ready to fulfill its purpose in both the summer and winter. It is only necessary to be mindful of several tips of its proper care such as not leaving plastic furniture out in the sun for extended periods of time. When it rains, lean the chairs against a table or wall so that they are tilted and the moisture can drain off them. This way, you won’t have to worry about puddles! If, despite all of its advantages, plastic furniture seems to be not elegant enough, let’s turn to its opposite - noble forging. Iron furniture with fancy forged patterns can turn any corner of the infield into a mysterious and romantic place. Whether it is bought pre-made or custom-made, it will always be

exclusive because it is quite rare to find in modern gardens. The reason for this is not only its high cost, but also operational qualities. Due to the low moisture resistance of iron furniture, special care is constantly required. Periodic restoration of rusted and damaged areas is unavoidable. To avoid unnecessary hassle, make sure that the furniture has a moisture and dust repellent coating or buy furniture from another material. A kind of golden middle between forged and plastic furniture is aluminum. Furniture from this material is inherent in all the positive properties of plastic: lightness, resistance to rain and dew, durability, and ease of care. Moreover, you can combine aspects of wood or other textiles to make the aluminum furniture elegant and suitable as décor in any outdoor area.

HARMONY OF WEAVING Wooden furniture deserves a distinct mention as it can fit into any garden landscape due to its natural qualities. Regardless of your design preferences, it is worthwhile to choose furniture from hardwoods as they

are quite resistant to the harmful effects of moisture. However, it is better to be safe and apply a layer of protective coating to maximize the lifespan of the furniture. In the past few years, wicker furniture has become increasingly popular. This type of furniture is able to add brightness and creativity to any outdoor landscape. It does require attentive treatment though. It is sensitive not only to rain, but also to sunlight so the best places for it are gazebos, shady patios, closed terraces and balconies. If the naturalness of materials is not an important factor for you, you can opt for furniture made from synthetic materials as they have greater resistance to moisture. The classic interweaving of light rattan may seem too mundane to you due its frequent use in the past few years. In this case, take a closer look at dyed wicker furniture. Red, yellow, golden, and green tones bring variety to your garden. Today, dark and unexpected colours are rising in popularity. These include cherry, dark blue, purple and even black. With the use of such unique colours, the garden will be a reflection of the extravagance and eccentricity of the owners.
