VENETIAN PLASTER: Magic for the Wall

he technology of Venetian plaster not only provides coatings of a variety of colours and shades, but also has the ability to create original and unique designs. The texture of Venetian coatings works harmoniously with modern designs of windows, doors, furniture, lighting and heating devices. In contrast to paint and wallpaper, Venetian plaster does not peel, practically does not change its colour for up to 15 years, can be washed, is environmentally friendly and odourless, and has fire-resistant properties. If you will need to change the interior of your apartment, house or office, this material does not need to be ripped off or sanded – you can simply apply any paint, enamel or wallpaper on it. The base of Venetian plaster consists of fine powder, natural minerals (such as marble,

lime and gypsum), and a binding material (most often a polymer or an acrylic base). After applying a thin layer of material on the surface that will be treated, a series of chemical reactions will take place that will result in the creation of a strong film that will enable you to exploit the material. The coating consists of tiny particles of marble, lime, gypsum and water (“lime milk”), and natural inorganic additives (without resins). After its application, within 20-25 days, a natural carbonization process occurs (saturation of the material with carbon dioxide) and a very strong, yet porous film, is formed. This plaster is harmless to humans and provides good transpiration (vapour permeability). This promotes the natural exchange of moisture in the room and prevents the appearance of mould as well as infectious bacteria.

THE SECRET OF THE FINISH: A pearlescent shade on the surface is obtained due to a special finishing compos-

ition that is applied on two base layers of Venetian plaster. Various effects are obtained by varying the technique of movement of the spatula, its dimensions and applied pressure. The process of natural carbonization strengthens the surface layer of the coating. Venetian plaster with pearlescent effects can be applied to walls and ceilings made from any material. The application of plaster, including its levelling, grinding, and for the final layer – polishing – has to be done quite fast as the plaster loses its flexibility when it dries. Thus, usually two specialists work on large surfaces: one applies and scales while the other continuously polishes the entire surface to achieve a high quality coating. Depending on the size of the spatula and the technique of application, it is possible to achieve various results of the final surface finish such as matte, shiny, or glossy. The applied decorative coating can be washed only after 20-25 days when the carbonization process will be complete.

PROTECTION OF THE COATING: In order to impart a water-repellent property to the coating, the surface is treated with a wax protective agent four or five days after the application of the third layer. The wax is applied in uniform, circular motions with a soft cotton napkin; two layers are applied at intervals of one hour.

NUANCES: To conclude our discussion, we note that the main drawbacks of decorative plaster are the length and complexity of this difficult manual work. However, the latter transforms into an advantage as it is specifically the skilled work of a craftsman that allows the creation of unique coatings. Unfortunately, even the best quality photos are not able to convey the full scale effect of the pearlescent coatings and the play of light. As with real pearls, these coatings must be viewed live in order to fully appreciate their beauty.

FASHION AND THE COLUMN

I

t is known that fashion is not only changeable, but also cyclical. Over time, it has the tendency to recur. This trend is applicable not only in the areas of clothing and shoes, but also in interior design. Designers often enhance modern materials with retro elements – and one of the most popular elements is the quasi-classical column. The column is able to add luxury, ancient nobility, and exquisite style to any room. However, in the general concept of the modern interior, old principles often have to be sacrificed. Today, columns can be used as an element of décor in any interior – although a living room with a column is a more traditional option than, say, an entrance hall, bedroom or bathroom. If the column stands alone without adherence to any wall, it can function as either an independent element of the interior or be leveled with other accessories. In the first scenario, you will have to act boldly. One method to highlight the column is to decorate it in a contrasting colour. Alternatively, you can draw attention to it by highlighting it with neutral or coloured back-

4

ALL ABOUT HOME

lights. This will allow you to visually distinguish the column and make it seem lighter. In the living room, the column can be used as an effective way to create zones. It can vary in size to the point where it can function as a full partition, which will visually separate the functional areas of the room. However, it is not recommended to place excessive loads on the column; try to avoid drilling it. As an option, you can install a plasma panel but in this case, the load must be supported by additional structures rather than the column itself. It is much more difficult to “hide” the supporting structures in a living room. The easiest method is to paint the column in the same tone as the walls of the room, if they are neutral colours. On the other hand, if the walls are bright, the beige and paler colour of the column will be less visible against their background. Another method of decorating the column is to cover it with mirrors, tiles with a mirror surface or a mosaic. This will effectively “hide” the column in the living room. You should resort to this option only in the case that you are confident that the mirrors will not distort the interior.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

If the column is half hidden in the wall, you can place bookshelves along its sides. Depending on the surroundings, they can either hide the column or emphasize it. Another option is to make the column function as a fragment of a gypsum plasterboard niche. In this case, you will acquire a storage space in the interior – the niche – and the column will “dissolve,” thus making the interior original. Columns can serve purposes other than strictly supportive. For example, you can use fake columns as decorative elements to enclose a dining area. These easy-to-install columns can be applied in unconventional, yet creative ways. A hollow decorative column can function as a locker or storage space for equipment. If you install it on a bar counter, you can arrange a mini-bar inside. The column, like any other architectural element of the interior, can disrupt the harmony in the interior or become a natural continuation of the space. It all depends on your imagination.

DECORATING THE INTERIOR WITH MULTI-FRAMES

D

espite the fact that we do not print photos as often as in the past, we still actively exchange them on social networks. The most successful and beloved ones are awarded a place in a frame in a prominent place. If you approach choosing the picture frame strategically, it can become not only support for a picture but also a unique decorative element in the interior. Children’s photos, milestones, vacation pictures – why should they get dusty in photo albums, if there is an opportunity to make the interior unique with their help?

DECORATING WALLS The empty white wall is a common concern in the interior. Unfilled space above

the sofa, bed or desk makes the interior seem incomplete. You can fill this space with meaning with the help of inexpensive multi-frames and photos. Imagine photo frames assembled into one composition; they can vary in size, shape, and colour and yet look very harmonious. Place your favourite photos in them and you will create a unique element of décor. Of course, you can hang single photo frames as well. However, in this case, the wall looks like a sieve. If you would want to change the décor in the future, you would face the problem of a damaged wall. You would also have to spend time thinking about how to create a harmonious composition. In the case of a multi-frame, you acquire an accessory that can be hung by one or two fastenings. This element will be well thought out in the compositional sense as every frame is the product of a designer’s careful work and planning, made for various styles of the interior.

A PHOTO ALBUM ON THE WALL You probably have a photo album stored on a shelf somewhere in your home. Try to remember, when was the last time you looked at it? Perhaps, it was when guests came over. But there is great way to make your favourite photos always be in sight – the multi-frame. It is difficult to capture a bright and significant event such as a wedding, travel journey or anniversary in a single photo. Display a collection of photos using the multi-frame and you will have a mini photo album on the wall. The number of frames can greatly vary, from three or five to hundreds or more. Choose one that will be suitable for your interior. A popular option is the multi-frame for 12 photos. You can change the photos at any time to create a new accessory and update the interior of your home. By acquiring a multi-frame, you are not merely decorating your home, but also creating an accessory that holds your beloved memories and elicits positive emotions.

HOME-STAGING: The Secrets of Quick Sales

H

ello, my name is Natalia Slobidker. I am a professional realtor, interior designer and certified specialist of home-staging. This discussion will focus on the latter of those three. Home-staging is the professional preparation of real estate for sale. The sweet spot between consumer psychology, interior design and the mastery of the art of real estate is much like a science of its own. The goal of staging is to sell your real estate while maximizing the speed of the sale and the price with a minimal amount of time, money and effort spent. For starters, here are some statistics: in 2012, RESA (Real Estate Staging Association) inspected 89 houses which, on average, lasted 166 days on the market until the owners despaired and called a professional home stager. On average, these houses were sold 32 days after they were professionally prepared – that is 81% less time spent on the market!!!

ones. This interior may be cozy and of top quality but for one reason or another, potential buyers do not feel the urge to snatch up the offer. I always tell my clients that a house in which you live and a house which you sell are two separate houses. Throughout my entire career, only once did I encounter a house that could be put up on the market without changing a thing. The woman who lived there was an artist and interior designer without sentiment towards objects (read: passion to piling mounds of useless things which clutter my and your homes alike). In all other cases, the houses or apartments needed to be adjusted to an idealized standard for the typical buyer in the region where it is being sold. Naturally, it is necessary to consider the specifics of the region. Home-staging for a downtown condominium will differ greatly from home-staging in Woodbridge, which, in turn, will differ from Markham.

But there are also common rules for any region, so let me start with those.

THE FIRST AND KEY RULE IS TO DECLUTTER. The sale of a house and the following move is a great reason to go through everything that has piled up and either throw away, donate or gift the things you have been keeping “just in case”. If the year had not presented such a case thus far, then it is likely that you do not actually need the item. If it is hard to part with acquired items anyway, then pack them into boxes and put them in storage if you have space. If not, then it would be reasonable to rent a storage space for the time being that you are selling. It is cheap and extremely effective. A home with fewer items looks more spacious; the space makes it easier to breathe freely and so, naturally, a potential buyer is more likely to appreciate it.

Nine of them were sold with multiple offers pending. Can you guess why? Maurice’s firm’s inspection revealed that almost 60% of buyers make their decision after having only considered ten homes. A correctly presented home makes it to the potential buyer’s list, thereby increasing its chances of sales. The same inspection claims that almost 80% of people are ready to pay more for a home where they can just move in without doing anything. This is the so-called move-in-ready house. A professional home stager will help you attain this too. So then, what is the mystery of this beast called home-staging? The need often comes up to sell your house or apartment where you had created the interior comfortable for you and your loved

HOW DOES OUR MOOD AFFECT OUR INTERIOR? Your home is what you think of it – right now Look around and try to understand where you are. If you wake up in the morning in the same tired and shattered state as from the previous evening, perhaps the problem isn’t in some complex project you were assigned at work, but in the unsuccessful choice of a mattress.

THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG? Your home is an indicator, or rather a mirror, that reflects your essence. Compare your apartment five years ago to its current state; try to remember how your room looked like when you were a teenager. Now, think about the milestones in your life – for example, moving out of your parents’ home, a wedding, or getting a new job. You may notice that the schedule of your life coincides with changes in the interior, or at least the two factors correlate.

E

verything that surrounds us is created by the freedom of our thoughts. We live by the canons laid out in our minds; we lead the life that we have drawn in our imagination.

DON’T CHANGE YOUR HOME – CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE Speaking plainly, every person is a visualizer of his or her life. You are an architect who needs a computer and special programs to construct an ideal interior. All that is required of you personally is that you direct your thoughts in the right direction! The mindset that you develop is a large factor in determining the course of your life. This is a sort of placebo effect, capable of plunging us into the deepest depression as well as improving our outlook a hundredfold.

10

ALL ABOUT HOME

YOUR HOME WILL ADAPT – AS SOON AS YOU CHANGE Psychologists have a thesis: more than 90% of events that occur in our life are determined by the examples and environments around us. Simply put, if you surround yourself with people who whine, you will soon find yourself complaining. If you don’t grow used to surrounding yourself with pleasant accessories, don’t be surprised that your home hasn’t had renovations for a “hundred years” because there is always “not enough money.” The biologist Bruce Lipton, having done plenty of work in this area, proved that the environment has an impact on how we develop as individuals. A primary factor is the location of our residence and how we live. In other words, our moods and feelings at a particular moment in our life depend on the kind of interior we live in.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Having caught this dynamic, you will be able to understand – what is more important to you, the chicken or the egg? What takes priority – a change in your environment that leads to a successive change in your life events or the opposite? By understanding which key will help you move on, you can adjust your life direction and mood. We depend on our environment, the people with whom we communicate, the location where we live, and our thoughts. Most importantly, we can choose all of these factors ourselves. The mood with which we wake up every morning depends on the bed linen we slept on, the shape of our bed, which direction it faces, and what our eyes open to each day. Our home and every little detail in it affect our mood and personality. Remember the paradox that your home, in general, is a reflection of who you are and your thoughts. Therefore, don’t stop dreaming and creating a comfortable atmosphere for yourself.

hen upgrading your exterior doors, there are many details to keep in mind. From architectural style to interesting hardware details, there are many ways you can transform a basic front door into a grand entrance. If you have been thinking about changing your front door this fall, keep our following tips in mind to help select the door that is right for you.

CREATE A STYLISH WELCOME … WITH A NEW DOOR

LET LIGHT IN Gone are the days of everyone on the street having a solid steel door. Look to having a front door that incorporates glass into the design. There are many articles written about the health benefits of having natural light in your home. It makes you feel happier, energetic, at peace and just darn good. Let’s face it: Canadians have 10 months of winter and 2 months of summer. We need to maximize natural lighting in our homes as much as possible. So why not take advantage of doing that with your front door?

HELLO COLOUR! Red? Blue? Or Black? Which colour should I choose? This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions from our clients when selecting an exterior door. Do you want to be bold? Do you want to be traditional? If your door could speak, what would it say? If you don’t want to be safe with your colours,

we suggest you go use that bold colour or make a statement with a high gloss black door. Don’t be afraid to be daring. Have fun with it and make your door truly stand out.

MODERN OR TRADITIONAL? WHAT’S MY STYLE? Regardless of the style of your home, you want your door to go well with it. For example, a modern full glass panel on a Tudor style house might not be the best option. Once you’ve chosen your style, selecting the right material will also be important. There are three types of door materials to consider: 1) Steel – Cost efficient and readily available with glass and paint options.

2) Fiberglass – More expensive than steel doors, but they can have the appearance of wood without the maintenance.

hardware. If you’re investing in a beautiful door, the last thing you want to do is pick any random lock and doorknob.

3) Wood – Who doesn’t love a wood door? There are more possibilities for shapes and sizes, but wood is more costly than steel and fiberglass doors.

Now that you have an understanding of the many features and options available for entry doors, we hope you’re ready to select the type that best fits your needs. Want to make a lasting first impression with your entry door? Contact our design team of experts at Fieldstone Windows and Doors!

UPDATE YOUR HOME WITH MATTE BLACK

THIS FALL!

M

by Rebecca Hay

atte black finishes have been in the design spotlight this year. Designers – myself included – have been using black fixtures and finishes for a few years now, but this trend is finally catching the public’s attention and products are becoming readily available. If you are looking to update your home décor this fall, matte black may be the perfect choice for you. Matte black finishes are showing up in various forms of lighting, hardware and plumbing fixtures. This type of finish pairs well with just about anything and I love mixing

it with other metals – this has become a popular design trend. I adore the look of matte black with gold and satin brass, but black goes very well with silvers and stainless finishes as well. Try combinations with polished nickels and coppers. A truly covetable design trend is the matte black faucet. Such faucets have sleek contemporary lines and lend themselves to both traditional and contemporary design while being soft and luxurious to the touch. These black fixtures can add sophistication when mixed with high-end lighting and furnishings. They are also a great downto-earth touch when used in a cottage or country setting.

Cabinet and door hardware are additional areas where you can add extra impact and update your home with this fresh look. By replacing old and dated interior door knobs with sleek matte black ones, you can transform your space. The cost is minimal and the impact can be extreme. Victoria and Albert Baths have recently launched an entire collection of tubs with many options for the exterior colour. Black is by far my favourite – available in gloss or matte finish. Talk about luxury! If this is too daring, take a look at their latest collections of black-finish faucets as well as the

light walls and colourful fabrics in an interior. Check out SS Tile & Stone for some great style selections in the city. Designer Tip: Remember to use the rule of repetition. If you add black to the floor tile or an area rug, make sure you pick up the colour by repeating it elsewhere throughout the space for continuity. So whether you are remodeling your home, bathroom or simply adding some small decorative accents to your interior this fall, consider adding in a few elements in black. It’s bold and sassy and commands your attention. You might just stay a little ahead of the design curve while you’re at it!

THE COLOUR OF BRICK

A

s with many other things, we in North America may expect yet another European innovation to soon find its way to North American to our markets. What we are currently talking about is the new brick. Brick used to be a serious building material up to the middle of the 20th century. Only later the brick became much thinner because it was mostly being used for the exterior finishing of houses. In Europe, houses are still built from the full-blown brick but red brick buildings have lately become, in the minds of consumers, tedious and commonplace. European manufacturers realize that their customers want something new, and they have introduced bricks of various colours – from the lightest to the utmost dark tones. A building made of coloured brick looks like a gingerbread house but choose a moderately bright colour and matching decor around the house – and the look will be elegant and trendy. A coloured brick is made the same way as a regular ceramic or silicone brick but with added pigments. It has the same insulating qualities and durability as a regular brick but looks much more interesting. As of today, the colour brick comes in 50 different shades, so the consumer can choose whatever best suits his decor ideas. The coloured brick, despite being a newcomer on the construction market, has become extremely popular. Looks like many Europeans prefer coming home after a long day of work to a cheerful and bright place, be it pink, green, or magenta. North American consumers surely will not be far behind.

TOP-OF-THE-LINE WALLS

T

FABRIC

he texture of wall covering is more important than their colour – this is the opinion of many designers who work to achieve an upscale look of a house or apartment. Smooth steel and cool glass, soft fabric, or rough plaster – all of this can find its place in both classic and extravagant interior designs. There are unlimited possibilities of wall textures, which enable any design fantasy to become a reality.

Fabric is one of the oldest and richest types of wall covering. To achieve a desired decorative effect designers use various fabrics, with sometimes-unbelievable textures or patterns. More often than not fabric is used for inserts in combination with other materials. Use of tapestries in the centre of a wood panel in royal palaces around the world has always been a source of inspiration to today’s interior designers.

WALL PANELS

TECHNO

From ancient Egypt and Rome, through the Middle Ages and up to this moment, wall panels have always been one of the favourite choices, attractive by its decorative and whimsical look. They provide unlimited choices for decorators for implementing their boldest ideas. Details vary depending on the material selected.

Some of the most creative designers like the idea of steel or other kinds of metal on the walls.

ENCAUSTIC This technique uses beeswax-based pigments applied while in their liquid form. These paints have vivid rich tones.

VENETIAN PLASTER Non-standard wall coverings may serve to underscore majestic and stylish features of the decor. Venetian plaster is an elegant and not too standard way of wall decoration. The technique of applying this kind of covering is rather complicated but the result is quite impressive.

RELIEF DECORATIVE PAINTING

This covering consists of fine-dispersed natural mineral particles of marble and plaster of Paris combined with lime and water. The application is done in three layers where the top one is the decorative one having an effect of pearly shimmer. Brush strokes are thoroughly evened out. The colour scale of the Venetian plaster has up to thirty five shades.

NATURAL STONE AND AGGLOMERATE

DECORATIVE PAINTING

WOOD

Professionally executed paintings on walls look unique and luxurious.

This is a classic. Such panels can be either austere or fanciful depending on the kind of wood. The variety of wood suitable for wall panels includes expensive types such as satin wood, eucalyptus, and black wood but the type of finishing is equally important. Whether the panel is painted or lacquered, what kind of decorative painting or antiquating is used – all this defines its look and texture.

20

ALL ABOUT HOME

It is more complicated in execution than encaustic and consists of several layers. Relief wall covering made with this method shimmers in electrical light and gives the wall a very expressive look.

Large rooms are the most suitable places to use stone on the walls. In open concept interiors, stone may serve for defining spaces of different functions. Active patterns in marble or granite attract attention and create multilayered colour space.

LEATHER Easily found on the home decorating market are prefabricated wall panels with all kinds of leather trim, from noble solid colour to hot animal print. Of course, upscale decor demands only natural materials. In the extreme case, you can cover your complete walls in leather but it is more common to use leather inserts.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

Agglomerate is the product of modern technologies based on natural quartz and marble with their best qualities enhanced. Agglomerate is a popular product for wall covering due to its durability, water and fire resistance, and convenience in installation and use. When creating decor in your home you strive for a harmonious result where spectacular decor is combined with comfort. The best way to achieve this purpose is to turn to qualified professionals to ensure the highest quality of renovations and decorations.

WHY IS A HUMIDIFIER IMPORTANT?

M

any have heard that a person consists of 8090% water, but not everyone realizes that the level of humidity in the atmosphere plays a vital role in the life of a human being. The amount of moisture in the air can exert a strong influence on the overall well-being of a person. The deviation of this parameter from normal values can imperceptibly and gradually reduce the immunity of a person, worsen the condition of the skin, and increase fatigue. This affects young children especially negatively. We all notice that the sea air is good for our health, and we try to spend our weekends or vacations relaxing near a river, lake, or the ocean. The normal level of humidity has a positive effect on our well-being. The optimal level is 45-65% relative humidity. When we are inside a building, there is often a violation in the balance of humidity maintained by nature. In the summer, this difference may be barely noticeable; however, in the winter season, the difference in the relative humidity indices between the outdoors and insides of buildings is significant. Due to the operating heating systems, moisture begins to evaporate from our body at an increased rate and this can

22

ALL ABOUT HOME

often lead to dryness in the throat (and dryness in general, including in the nasal cavity and respiratory tract), dry skin (primarily the hands and face), drying lips, and so on. Occurring on a daily basis, this unfavourable situation can lead to the most undesirable consequences. You may become more susceptible to colds, skin conditions, and chronic respiratory diseases. Further, a lack of moisture can lead to the drying out of many domestic plants and flowers, the leaves of which are sensitive to humidity levels. Thus, using a humidifier in the fall and winter seasons is relevant for every person both at home and at work. If you have small children, then maintaining the optimal humidity level is your topmost priority. Prior to obtaining a humidifier, let’s explore the kinds of models that exist on the market.

TRADITIONAL (FAN) HUMIDIFIERS In these devices, whose design withstood the test of time, evaporation occurs via the traditional method. The moisture gradually evaporates from the water container. The area of evaporation is increased due to use of special replaceable sponges which effectively absorb moisture from the containers and then enable it to evaporate into the

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

air. The fan blows on the sponge, increasing air flow and thereby leading to effective evaporation of the moisture.

ULTRASOUND HUMIDIFIERS This type of humidifier is characterized by its compact dimensions and the large variety of, often whimsical, designs. Evaporation occurs due to high-frequency ultrasound vibrations of a special membrane that transforms water into steam. This steam is of the same temperature as cool water; thus, this type of evaporation is often referred to as “cold steam.” These humidifiers are noiseless and are able to quickly raise the humidity levels to the desired values. A humidifier that emits hot steam increases the humidity of the room; it heats the water to boiling temperature. This type of humidifier is capable of raising humidity levels to 100%. You can even hold steam baths in your home with the help of this humidifier. An advantage of this model is that the evaporated hot steam is completely sterile. However, these models operate louder than others and consume more electricity due to the boiling process. Keeping the usefulness of a humidifier in mind, it is easy to see its usefulness in the home, especially since it is affordable for everyone.
