Stuck in time Project 1.1

Finding symbols in nature can be a truly challenging task. In project 1.1 we visited a site in Baltimore, which is Herring run Park, in the park there was a different array of shapes, forms and structures natural created by nature. Taking pictures that capture the essence of nature, like the rings in a tree stump defining its age, the different heights in the forest, and a leaf resting in the snow. After taking the pictures we would come to extract images that go beyond the basic images and would speak out to us.

Project 1.2 After Finding symbols symbols in nature, and extracting our abstract images. We where required to design a park pavilion for Herring run Park. Using what we learned about develping a strong site analyes, we designed and dedvelp a abstract pavion that best fit the site

Tensile Struture Project 1.3

In this proiect, we where tasked on researching on a diffternt style struture while in groups , the one thtat was given to groiup 3 was Tensile. We had to gather information from direct source, such as the Earl Richsrdson library.

Munich Olympiastadion - Frei Otto, Günter Behnisch Frei Otto

• German Architect and Engineer • Born In 1925 in Germany • Served in the German air force as a pilot • Captured by Allies and was taken to a prisoner of war camp • At the camp he was put in charge of building and repair tools • Otto had to deal with shortages and began making efficient tent designs • Tent designs led to getting more use out of less material which led to tensile structure ideas

Günter Behnisch

• German Architect • Born in 1922 in Germany • Served in World War 2 serving as one of Germany’s youngest U-Boat commanders at age 17 • Surrendered to the British and became a prisoner of war • Served as a brick layer then studied Architecture in 1947 at the Technical University in Stuttgart

Munich Olympiastadion

• Designed by Frei Otto and Günter Behnisch in Munich in 1972 • First stadium where the roof structure becomes the dominant form for the stadium as a whole • The roof consist of net cables with plexiglass sheets suspended by steel rope from of masts • The use of the translucent roofing material is the first example of the direct influence of television on the construction of the stadium • Concrete anchor foundation buried in the landscape • Stadium employs use of tensile connections • The work was inspired by Frei Otto’s light weight tent designs • The structure is prioritized over the design but the design is intended to bring peace among men and put Germany in a better light • Stadium is built over the Allies bombing site

The area the fransworth house is located is Piano, Illinos. This area is known to be effected by the change in the season and relationship with sunlight. The Fransworth house sits on top of a hundred year flood plan. This flood plain has caused the area to have a recent flood in 2008, which caused the water level to rise 5ft in to the house,  

Site plan of fransworth house property with topography lines

Summary

The house was designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1945 and constructed in 1951, the Farnsworth House is a vital part of American iconography, an exemplary representation of both the International Style of architecture as well as the modern movement’s desire to create the sleek, streamline design of Modern structure with the organic environment of the surrounding nature. The house was home to two owners, Dr. Edith Farnsworth and Peter Palumbo

This shows that the area is subject to different weather effects, that range from snow in the winter to heat in the summer.

The area the Fransworth house is located is subject to flooding, this shows the water level going 5ft into the infrastructure,
