So a few mornings ago, over breakfast, I was practicing Legend’s Flash Cards with him – you know, addition & subtraction for 1st graders. Well, because we were eating and he was cutting his pancakes while looking at the cards I was holding up, and doing the math (which is really just memorization), it seemed like he was taking longer than normal for him to tell me his answers to the equations. He was clearly distracted by what was on his plate (no pun intended), so I tried something that we’ve never done before. I began moving at a slow, but more consistent pace, placing the cards, with the equations face up, in a pile, in front of him. As he saw me moving towards the pile with the next card in my hand, he realized that he only had a few more seconds to tell me the answer to the equation I just placed down in front of him.
If he got that one correct, I kept moving towards the pile to place the next card. If he got it wrong, I slowed down, but kept moving to place the next one down.
He realized that he had a limited time to answer me, so he stopped procrastinating, and told me his answer to each equation before the next card was placed. I don’t know if it was a fear that he’d lose the opportunity to get it right, or because he knows that if he skips equations on his tests, that they are considered incorrect as well, but out of all 100 equations, he only missed a few on his first attempt (which is way better than he was doing before I used this new technique), AND he quickly corrected himself every time he saw me slow down to give him another shot at it.
Moral of the Story? When we have a time limit, or a deadline, on getting our work accomplished, we move a lot more quickly. We think more efficiently, we move faster, and sometimes (ahem), we even break things! And even if we don’t do a perfect job, we still win because we took action, did our best, and got that much closer to success. Remember, there is never any perfection, in production.
The key to success is what’s called “speed of implementation”. In other words, the way to do it, is to just “do it to it!” The sooner you put into effect new knowledge, new strategies, new skills, new relationships, new beliefs, even new feelings about something – the sooner you get on your way to your next level of success! So, make today count. Because it’s all you have right now.
And when you’re ready to start putting dollars in YOUR pocket, out of the comfort of your home, while hanging out with your own family during breakfast….
