I shared this story over dinner recently with some friends I met up with at a cool little mastermind I was at down in Colorado Springs not too long ago. I’m sharing the same story with you today because there’s a BIG Network Marketing Success Tip here. Here’s what happened: A few weeks ago, I was in the gym, training in the free weight area. Now I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest guy in the gym, so when my gym is packed and there are a lot of people in there working out – I’m usually just about average compared to some of the bigger guys who train at my club. Anyway, while I was between sets of my shoulder workout, I noticed a guy working out next to me,
snickering about another guy, working out on the other side of him. He was making remarks to his buddy about this other guy’s legs, and how thin they were, and how horrible he looked – basically, just being a real jerk, and being very disrespectful. So, I kept my eyes on this guy (the jerk), for the rest of his workout, because; A) I had never seen him in my gym before And… B) Because I wanted to say something to him, about how he was acting Now don’t get me wrong, I may be smaller than a lot of the guys who train at my gym – but trust me when I say that hardly any of them train like I do. If you ever workout with me, you’ll know I leave it all in the gym. Plus, I don’t take steroids and I do like to live a little outside the gym with my diet, and am not training for a bodybuilding competition – so, I may not be as big as the other guys, but none of that is important to me.
In other words – I‘m not competing with anyone but myself. I train to stay mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually razor sharp, and strong in every capacity – not to impress a judge, or my friends, or anyone. I do it for me. And, on top of that, I learned how to fight, years ago, so that I never have to. I’ve got nothing to prove, and usually with a few words I can neutralize any situation that might have had the potential to elevate had I not been trained on how to do this. But something was itching me that day, to let this guy know that how he was treating my fellow gym mate (who I don’t even know), was completely unacceptable. Not in my gym. So, while I was training, I kept my eyes on him – he & his buddy. And when the guy walked up stairs to leave, I followed him. He went to go fill up a shaker of what looked like a post workout drink at the water fountain, so I knew I had a good 30-60 seconds of him standing still while I approached him. So, I walked up to him to use the fountain next to the one he was using, and I said, “Hey, what’s going on man?” He looked up from his shaker cup, nodded and said, “what’s up?” I said, “you new around here? Never seen you before.” He said, “Yeah, I usually workout at Arapahoe”. I said, “Cool. You a trainer? Because I’m thinking about hiring one.”
He perks up when he hears that I’m looking to pay someone to train me. He says, “Yeah, I do some training.”
I said, “Really? So what business do you have teasing a guy downstairs for not being as big as you?” I went on, “Dude, you come in here like you own the place, and then you disrespect the very people who pay you to hire them.” He looks at me like I had three eyes. I might have. Maybe they were red. I don’t know. But he finished filling up his shaker cup and walked away. Hopefully, something I said got through to him – I have no idea. All I know is that I could not let him walk away without maybe enlightening him a bit. I was willing to risk him getting angry and abusive. I was willing to risk him putting his hands on me. I didn’t care. Because I care TOO much, to not say something. I don’t do it often, but when I feel the need to, I am ready to speak my mind, regardless of who it’s to. You may be asking yourself what this all has to do with network marketing success…
The reason I’m sharing this story, is because I see the same thing happen in the Network Marketing Industry. People who are successful, bashing others who are en route to becoming successful. People putting others down for taking risks, for being excited about their new network marketing businesses. And putting people down for the very things that allow us all to become successful. My friend, it’s tough enough to battle the spiritual vampires from the outside World, let alone people inside the network marketing Profession, who are not setting a great example of what it takes to succeed. So let’s start supporting each other & lifting each OTHER up, regardless of what company, product or opportunity we market. Let’s start appreciating that together, we can change lives, regardless of what people sell.
Let’s start working together more, to send the message that we all stand for the same thing – FREEDOM. Let’s not look for flaws & post them publicly on our Facebook walls or blogs, trying to downplay other people’s businesses and expose a chink in other people’s armor. Instead, let’s take a different approach, and show each other the love & respect that we all deserve. After all, if we want to gain a new level of respect from the outside World – we should start right here, on the inside World. I haven’t seen that guy in my gym ever since I shared those words with him, but I’ll tell you this; there’s no way that he could ever look at his potential clients the same way ever again, without thinking about what I said to him that day. I hope the same for you. I hope the same for me.
