If you are in any form of Home Based Business and leverage the power of Internet Marketing to communicate with your list subscribers and make sales, one of the most important aspects of your business is Email Marketing. This means that you are using a Lead Capture Page to collect names and emails (or just emails), of your website visitors, so that they can be added to your list, and then followed up with by your Autoresponder. An autoresponder is an online platform that keeps email address of leads, interested prospects, and customers (or members), all in one central location, so that you can easily communicate with them at one time, without having to send dozens, hundreds, or thousands of emails to each of them individually, every time you want to send them something. In other words, you can set up follow up messages, about your products, services, opportunity, or anything that you want to send them, so that starting on their first day after opting in to your list, they receive automated messages for as long as you set them up for.

You can even set the time between messages, and schedule messages for hours, days, weeks, even months in advance, so that your messages are always working for you, even when you are not. These features are great for when you want to travel, take a vacation, or just step away from your business, and have it continue running, even in your absence.

So, what are 5 surefire ways to spice up your email subject lines and get more opens? #1 – Stating the Obvious #2 – In or out of Rapport #3 – Human Interest #4 – Bonus Offer #5 – Sense of Urgency

So let’s start with #1 – Stating the Obvious. This is probably the most important type of email subject line, simply because being able to state the obvious to your subscriber means that you know who they are, what they do, what they want, and anything that’s stopping them from getting it (also known as – their ‘problem’). When you state the obvious, the object is to get them into agreement with you, so that they naturally want to read what’s inside that email. Remember, the sole purpose of a subject line is to get your subscribers to open up your email. Of course, telling them something that they already know, validates them, and their knowledge of something specific that interests them. For example, my target market is people who want to be successful making money with a home based business, so a good subject line might be: “Why 97% of Home Based Business Owners FAIL”. This also employs the use of numbers as well (which is also a surefire way to get more opens) however, since most Home Based Business Owners fail, I’m appealing to my subscriber’s knowledge of this fact, which might naturally compel those who want to know “why”, to open my email. If a subscriber of mine doesn’t really care, then they won’t even bother to open it – chances are because they are either too busy, something’s distracting them, or knowing why is just not important. Who knows, maybe being successful in a home based business is no longer even a priority for them. Nevertheless, Stating the Obvious is Surefire Way #1.

Surefire Way #2 to spice up your email subject lines and get more opens, is what I call, In or Out of Rapport. This means that in your subject line, you appeal to your subscribers values or beliefs. Being in rapport means that you are in alignment with how they feel or think. A good example of being In Rapport would be (targeting my own Market): “Sick & tired of more month at the end of the money” Of course this is just an example of being In Rapport, but it’s probably how my best prospects feel, which is also why they will make the decision to join me in business. Being in rapport is not factual knowledge that can be looked up, but it’s something that your leads or subscribers are ‘feeling’ or believing about themselves, or their own situation, which will compel the ones who still in the market, to open up your emails. Just the same, Out of Rapport is a little different, meaning that you are going completely opposite of what seems “logical”, or the ‘norm’, to your subscribers. So for example, an Out of Rapport Subject line might be: “Could making money from home be this easy” (Notice that I do not use punctuation in my subject lines. The spam filters are hyper-sensitive to punctuation, so I’d steer away from using it, even when asking a question as your subject)

Surefire Strategy #3 to spice up your email subject lines and get more opens, is what I call Human Interest, as in Human Interest Stories. Let me give you an example of how powerful this strategy is. When you go to a supermarket to buy groceries and are standing on line, what are displayed all around the checkout area? If you are thinking Magazines, you are correct. Now what are these magazines filled with? Human interest stories. How about the top rated television shows during primtime?

Nowadays, it’s reality shows. Why? Because they feature people, and all their stories (which is mostly drama on display). The news is also a good example. Not that the nightly news is good idea for anyone to watch, because it’s filled with negativity and disempowering content, but my point is, that people are addicted to stories about other people, good or bad. So, when it comes to getting more of your emails opened with spicy subject lines, using inspiring and empowering stories about other people who are getting results, always gets great open rates. For example, one of my best open rates on an email was one with the subject line: “Long haired hippie kid makes ridiculous sized check”. This was an email about my dear friend, Justin Verrengia, and the subject suggests a human interest story, that is also, out of rapport. Afterall, what long haired hippie kid ever makes a ridiculous sized check?! lol Well, we’d better open up and find out, because this message goes against what I already believe to be possible, AND, I want to read a good ‘feel good’ story :)

#4 in our 5 surefire strategies to spice up your email subject lines and get more opens, is using a Bonus Offer. This is a good idea for when your email is based on a promotion that either you or your company is running. A lot of times, people are just as, or even more interested in a Bonus, for making a decision, than the actual thing they are being asked to either buy or take action on. The words One Time, or Exclusive, also compliment the word “Bonus” and it can even be in all capitals, like “BONUS”! If you are piling on more added value into your offer, you can even use the word “BONUS”. Of course, the word NEW always helps, because it suggests that your subscriber hasn’t seen or heard of this BONUS before, which plays into “being the first”, or being in early for the release of a new innovation or secret. Either way, BONUSES are great ways to get opens, when you are running a promotion, which is one of many different types of email you can send.

Surefire Strategy #5, to Spice up Your Email Subject Lines and Get More Opens, is by using a Sense of Urgency. This means that there is a limited amount of time before something (like an event, or a promotion) either starts, or stops, that there is limited availability, creating what is called fear of loss. Any one of these psychological buying triggers can be used when implementing Sense of Urgency because just like when you pull something away that somebody wants, it causes behavior that would move them closer to taking action, specifically, making a buying decision. Usually, a deadline or countdown timer would be used in this type of promotion, but staying on track, implementing Sense of Urgency into your subject lines, will often get higher open rates as long as your don’t overuse this type of promotion. A good example that I’ve used very successfully, would be: “Last Chance Email – Final Day for Your Extra BONUS – Hurry!” As you can see, I incorporated Sense of Urgency, the word “BONUS”, and “Hurry”, all into one subject line. When I use these from time to time, they get great open rates. The KEY to spicing up your email subjects and getting great open rates all the time, is to be consistently mailing your list, and always providing great value. Once you master these 2 aspects of Email Marketing, your subscribers will open up your messages, no matter what the subject line! That’s when you know that you’ve become an Influencer in their eyes, and as long as you have a great vehicle & a good mentor, you will always be able to market & sell any products and services that you like, online.
