I must say that BEAUTY you are improving by the day. Your February issue which talked about romantic makeup was really fun to read. In fact I tried out one of the looks mentioned and it was a success. I generally like to do up my eyes, but this time I tried brightening my lips, and I looked so transformed. Hope you would have a section on how to buy makeup. I really would love tips on that. Sangita Banerjee, Student, Kolkata

I have become addicted to your magazine. I look forward to your issue every month now. There’s something new every time. You are doing a good job of informing us. But I have one request, instead of reviewing just high end spas, do feature regular beauty salons where one can go for a cost effective treatment. Not many of us can send Rs 2,500 on a facial. Give us details on mid range salons as well.

I loved the article ‘Dye Defined’. It really put a different perspective on hair colours. I found it informative to read about the benefits of at home colours. I have found that most stylists at hair salons deride at home colours. But I am satisfied with the result I get with at home colours. It is also very pocket friendly. I liked the fact how you have tried to balance the good and bad of both the colours. Thanks to you guys, now I know what to do with my tresses.

Ruchi Agarwalla, Engineer, Delhi.

I have lot of jewellery and most of them were given to me by my mother, which makes them very precious to me. They are my family heirloom that I would like to preserve for generations. I was really confused as to how to take care of my precious stones. But your How to… section gave me solutions for the same. Now I can take care of my jewels and pass on to the next generation as well. Lipika Majumdar, Housewife, West Bengal.

Take a Brow While the no brow look has been making headlines in the international fashion circuit, for us Indian girls strong, well defined brows work the best. Emphasising this point Vimi Joshi, Senior Artist, MAC says, “Brows are a huge focus for this season, it is either no brows at all or very defined brows – they made a huge statement. In India defined brows are a major factor to your look and makeup. They frame the face and add structure to it. Women spend time on their brows and it adds so much strength and definition to you.” Taking this forward with a neat set of brow groomers is MAC with its All Ages, All Races, All Sexes collection – with

a focus on spectacularly shaded and shaped brows for all in colours matched to the individual. The star products in this include MAC Impeccable Brow Pencil – in hues that can match any brow colour; MAC Penultimate Brow Marker – one shade that suits all with a liquefied texture for precision application; and MAC Brow Set - Besides the collection also has Blot Powder, Beauty Powder Blush, Eye Shadow, Lipstick and Lipglass to complement the strong-browed look. To get perfectly defined brows follow Vimi’s advice, “The new MAC Impeccable Brow Pencils are a must have for this season’s brow look. Start at the arch of the brow and work outward to a fine point. You can then fill in start of the brows in an upward motion. Keep your touch light as going too heavy here can make your brows look tough. You want to look groomed and defined.” To balance the look, keep your lips also well defined in a deep neutral hue. “Keep the rest of the face quite nude and fresh. Add a generous amount of mascara for a look that is modern, wearable and straight off the runway to real life,” she adds.

Do

Think of colour when trying out the smoky-eyed look. Try the look with intense jewel tones like emerald green, amethyst purple, garnet plum, or smoky quartz grey – these are easier to carry and give your eyes intense yet fresh look. Getting this makeup right just got easier with Bourjois Shade Platter Smoky Eye Trio, Rs 625, and Effet Smoky Pencil, Rs 325. Start by applying the medium shade from the eyeshadow palette from the centre of your lid extending beyond the crease and to the outer corner, then apply the darkest shade till the crease. Intensify the impact by drawing a line close to the lash line with the pencil. Then smudge and blend the line and the shadow with the brush attached to the pencil.

Don’t

&

Do’s Don’ts Do

Give your skin extra dose of moisture to keep it hydrated as the season starts changing – air gets drier and can play havoc with your skin’s water balance. Your best bet is to keep a gentle facial mist that you can spritz on your face whenever the skin feels taut. We liked these three: Avene Thermal Spring Water, Rs 700 – pure aqua with low mineral content that soothes irritated sensitive skin; L’Occitane Olive Tree Toning Face Mist, Rs 1,250 - this face mist has a combination of organic olive tree leaf extract, olive water and olive oil that provides long term hydration; and Forest Essentials Panch Pushp Hydrosol, Rs 595 – a floral water with a blend of five flowers like rose, jasmine, marigold, Kewda, and saffron.

Don’t

Worry if you are not an expert at applying foundation. Now you can get a flawless finish with the new L’Oreal Paris True Match Roll’On Foundation, Rs 900. The formula has elastomers that give it a blendable, smooth texture. The foundation glides on the skin weightlessly and gives the skin a velvety finish. The flexible RollOn applicator has been designed to stretch the foundation over the skin for the sheerest coverage. With its ergonomic shape, the applicator has been made to conform to facial contours, even n difficult areas like the eyes and the sides of the nose.

2010

Fret over patchy, uneven skin tone. Just pamper your face with skin brightening facial mask at leats twice a week. And you are bound to have more luminous, youthful skin. The latest from Mary Kay MelaCEP Advanced Whitening System, the MelaCEP Mask, Rs 1,000 promises you just that. The key ingredient MelaCEP Whitening Complex is a bend of four key actives including antioxidants like Kakadu Plum, Ferula Foetida, Sunflower Seed extracts, and Lactobacillus ferment that condition the skin and restore its natural brightness.

Don’t

Ignore the skin restoration action that goes on at night as you hit the bed. Skin experts agree that as you rest your mind and body at night, the skin regeneration process doubles in speed to undo the day’s damage. It is also the time when your skin is most geared up to absorb nutrients. Dermatologists advise that you apply skin repairing serum with vitamin at night time to boost the regeneration process. Massage in few drops of the latest Keraskin Immuniste with Procysteine - a precursor molecule for a natural anti-oxidant – to fight daily damage done by sun, pollution and free radicals. Fight fine lines and wrinkles with Oriflame Royal Velvet Ultra Restorative Capsules, Rs 1,590 with essential oils, isoflavones and vitamins.

Do

Have some fun with bright lip colours to celebrate your womanhood. As the weather turns warm and balmy; ditch matte hues for some bright, creamy lip shades to welcome spring. We like the latest neon hued lip colour from Inglot. Try the Lip Duo in Pink, Rs 720 – an attractively packaged creamy lip glosses in transparent cube. The palette has a light peachy pink for doing up the lips during the daytime; and darker plum pink for the night time pout. You can blend the two for more intense bright effect.

Do

Give your dry damaged strands extra dose of tender loving care, and treat them to intensive conditioning therapy. But don’t have time for a visit to the hair spa? Create your hair spa at home and give your hair the strengthening bond of ceramide which fill in the broken strands and seal the scales. Try the latest hair care regime from L’Oreal Paris Hair Expertise, Total Repair 5. The damage repairing formula developed by L’Oreal labs, Ceramide Cement, help you fight five major hair issues of today - hair fall, dryness, roughness, dullness and split ends. This replicates hair’s natural structure, fills the cracks in the strands leaving them smooth and supple. Wash and condition your hair thrice a week Total Repair 5 Repairing Shampoo, Rs 130, and Repairing Conditioner, Rs 150. Once a week use the rich Repairing Masque, Rs 325 for extra shine and protection.

beauty’s FACE

With shining eyes, open smile, and a penchant for fresh face, Genelia, Garnier’s new brand ambassador for its skin cream talks about her love of makeup and peachy cheeks.

To me being beautiful means having a light within, that shines through to others and makes your eyes twinkle. Beautiful people are not just those who are dressed impeccably and look attractive – they are a breed of selfassured, confident and happy people. Love of makeup I often get complimented for being beautiful. I love that, and it makes me happy. So I go ahead and smile even wider. In fact I feel my smile and my eyes are my best and favourite features. While I do not buy too many products, but makeup is something I love. In fact I spend on makeup most of the time. I pick up stuff from MAC, Benefit, and Lancôme. While I don’t feel the pressure of looking well groomed all the time, I do love to have peachy cheeks and glossy lips – not a very high maintenance look to carry. A dash of Kohl, and mascara added to that completes the look, and my smile does the rest. Fresh Appeals In our world there is a pressure to look gorgeous all the time, but I prefer to clean freshness and comfort any time. While I do keep light makeup on, but I am stickler for squeaky clean skin and basic hygiene. Though I do not buy any or every skin care product, but I do believe in certain brands and skin care must-haves. I have stylists and makeup artists to guide me, but I maintain my own skin care regime. I’m a clean-face freak so I wash my face a million times a day. I believe skin needs to be kept hydrated at all times and so my H20 spray comes to my rescue. Besides that I use Garnier Light Moisturizer – since becoming its brand ambassador I

have been using this, and I can swear by the results it has given me. It not only keeps my skin moisturised but also gives me sun protection. I love the fact that it has natural ingredients like lemon essence and Vitamin C help clarify, smoothen and brighten my skin. It also has the advantage of SPF 15 which offers sun protection from harmful UVA and UVB sunrays. At night I follow the tried and tested cleanser-tonermoisturizer routine. For me it is a must. I am not vulnerable to follow beauty fads but I like to stick to the basics. I don’t think being a celeb makes your beauty regime any different – it just makes it very frequent since we have to put on pans of makeup which can really take its toll on the skin. Beating beauty blues When I don’t feel my beautiful best, I go for a spa treatment and listen to some cheery music. But if I am not looking or feeling great and I have to rush to a glam do, I use my must-have cosmetics – kohl, mascara, gloss and cheek tint and blast my favourite tunes to get me into the groove. Yes, there is this constant pressure to look good. But then, to handle that, I have a strong support system in terms of my family who keep me grounded; I have an excellent team in terms of my manager and publicist who offer me honest opinions and sharp criticisms and help me look good as well as feel good about myself, always.

beauty Solution

Dr Satish Bhatia, Consultant Dermatologist, Apollo Hospitals Mumbai gave us answers to some pressing skin and hair issues of these five women.

Shalini Khanna, Teacher, 35

Solution

Problem

There are no topical creams or lotions that can wipe away moles. Moles can appear on your skin either due to sun exposure or due to genetic makeup. Generally they are harmless. If you find your moles growing in size then check with your dermatologist. Otherwise your only option of moles removal is co2 laser or q switched ND YAG laser.

I have started noticing tiny black moles on my face. I was advised a laser treatment to zap them away. But I am apprehensive about going for the same. I have a fair complexion which makes them very prominent. Are there any topical creams or lotions that can fight the moles?

Priyamvada Kowshik, Features Editor, 33 Problem Whenever I comb my hair, I notice small broken hair, which means my hair grows very slowly. I have very dry hair and skin. However my scalp gets greasy within three days of washing. Please advise what I can do to fight greasy scalp, hair breakage, and dehydrated skin?

Solution Your skin and hair issues are stemming from an internal imbalance. So start taking tablet Biotin 10mgm once daily after meal. Since you have a greasy scalp, you are prone to oily dandruff. Start using a shampoo containing 1% Salicylic acid every alternate day.

Shobita Dhar, Journalist, 31

Solution

Problem

You are actually following a good routine. Even after that if you are facing such problem, you will need to consult a dermatologist to rule out some internal causes.

I have very thin hair that I feel are damaged since my hair cuticles feel very rough. I have also started noticing hair fall, though I try to eat nutritious diet. I also have started noticing brown spots on my face though I follow the CTM regime. When I use a foundation I break into rashes. I generally have a combination skin. Please suggest a remedy.

Padmini Ganapathy, Architect, 34 Problem Over last few months I have started noticing that my skin has got oilier progressively. Now I get small rash like eruptions on my cheeks and forehead, which look very ungainly. My job profile exposes me to lot of dust and sun. What should I do to fight this? Please advice what kind of professional facials I can opt for?

18

BEAUTY | M A R C H

2010

Solution Your skin is reacting sun exposure. This is pushing your oil glands to go on overactive mode. Apply a Benzoyl Peroxide 5% gel twice daily on the eruptions for 15 days. This should dry them up. You should get skin brightening facial done every three weeks. Avoid using creamy lotions in the morning before going out in the sun; instead wear a sunscreen gel that will get absorbed into the skin easily without any greasy residue.

Late Anita Roddick, Founder, The Body Shop Born in the seaside town of Littlehampton, England in 1942, Late Dame Anita Roddick felt a bit of an outsider because of her origins. Her parents were Italian immigrants. She trained as a teacher and travelled around the world taking up teaching assignments. She married Scotsman Gordon Roddick in 1970 and opened a restaurant together. The Body Shop came up in 1976 “Simply to create a livelihood for myself and my two daughters, while my husband, Gordon, was trekking across the Americas. I had no training or experience and my only business acumen was Gordon’s advice to take sales of £300 a week,” says the Dame in her biography. She attributes her spirit of entrepreneurship to nurturing creativity and her success. For her it was “About creating a product or service so good that people will pay for it. Now 30 years on The Body Shop is a multi local business with over 2,200 stores serving over 77 million customers in 55 different markets in 25 different languages and across 12 time zones. And I haven’t a clue how we got here,” she said. In fact it was not only the need for economic freedom that pushed her, but also her vast experience from her early travels of the beauty rituals of women from all over the world. Not only that, Dame Roddick also decided to work differently with her retail packaging. “The frugality that my mother exercised during the war years made me question retail conventions. Why waste a container when you can refill it? And why buy more of something than you can use? We behaved as she did in the Second World War, we reused everything, we refilled everything and we recycled all we could. The foundation of The Body Shop’s environmental activism was born out of ideas like these,” she explained. In fact the green colour of her brand – the only colour she could us in her first shop to hide the damp walls – came to mean the ‘green’ approach of the stores. In fact it was not only Dame Roddick’s desire to get naturebased beauty products to women, but also a commitment to ‘To dedicate our business to the pursuit of social and environmental change.’ Today, The Body Shop works to help communicate human rights, and environmental issues, and help local communities benefit from their traditional crops and way of living. All the products that come out of the company’s stable have ingredients sourced under the The Body Shop Community Trade initiative. She accepts that while the communities may not be able to earn in a major way from this but it does help them sustain their chosen way of life, and natural assets of their regions. Till she left, Dame Roddick was actively involved in sourcing new ingredients, be part of the creative team at The Body Shop to evolve skin and environment friendly products. She had a long standing relationship with India, which is a source for natural ingredients and traditional beauty tools for The Body Shop. In 2006 the brand entered the Indian market, and since then it has been involved in

various community issues like violence against women, AIDs awareness, child abuse etc. In 2007, Dame Roddick passed away but her legacy of community service lives on. The brand creates special products for each of its issues, proceeds from the sales of which go to fund the causes. -

Jane D. Wurwand, Founder & Owner, Dermalogica The story started when Jane Wurwand, a trained skin therapist from Britain travelled to the US and realised that the state of education for skin and body therapy was very poor. It was impossible to expand existing knowledge and learn new beauty treatment techniques there. That’s what pushed Wurwand. She put her education in action, opening a small classroom in Marina del Rey, California under the name The International Dermal Institute (IDI). She invited licensed skin therapists to get hands-on with the postgraduate training so critical to making them competitive in the business. Today, IDI is considered the international gold-standard for postgraduate skin and body therapy training with over 40 locations worldwide. That was in 1983. Three years later Wurwand realised that the therapists that she was churning out needed products and tools that were result-oriented rather than fancy. So IDI became the product research, development and testing arm and Dermalogica was born in 1986. “From day one, our formulas raised eyebrows in the industry – not only for the cutting-edge ingredients we used, but also for common ones we omitted. To this day, Dermalogica products shun the industry norm of using cheap chemicals like Mineral Oil, Lanolin, S.D. Alcohol, artificial fragrances and colours – and our packaging has remained simple and sustainable,” explains Wurwand. In fact she believes in listening to her own intuition when it comes to product development or growth of the company. Wurwand likes to work outside of the comfort zone to develop her skin care ideas. In fact Wurwand went a step ahead and claimed that skin care was more a health issue than just a beauty and glamour thing. She not only brought in revolutionary products, but also introduced the concept of professional skin therapists who were trained to deal with any of your skin issues. She said that properly trained professional therapists were better than dermatologists in administering skin treatments since they had more hands on experience. Moreover, Wurwand stressed on knowing the skin before giving out any treatments. She pioneered what is called the concept of ‘Face Mapping’. It literally divides your facial landscape into 14 zones and the therapist thoroughly examines each zone and notes the problem of that area. Only after that is your skin care treatment is customised and each zone is treated with the necessary solution. In a recent interview Wurwand stressed that skin care should

never be intimidating, and too expensive to maintain. That is why skin mapping as a service is free of cost to customers; they only pay for the products bought or facial service taken. In fact Wurwand is so conscious of skin care as a health issue that she does not hesitate in taking popular products out of her line if they pose any health hazards. Now she is involved in creating awareness amongst younger generations and men about good skin habits. Wurwand also supports skincare programs for children who cannot afford them – she started this to push her teenage daughter’s passion for helping young children. She believes that today empowerment of young women has become even more crucial than ever before. -

Shahnaz Husain, Founder, Shahnaz Husain Group I belong to a conservative family and according tradition, I was married at the tender age of 15. By the time I was 16, I was a mother. Life seemed perfect, but I was bored with the drudgery of endless routine. I was interested in beauty and in making others beautiful. I had several ideas in my mind on new concepts and pathbreaking treatments. I wanted to be somebody who made a difference. I decided to choose beauty as a career, but I wanted to get the best training possible. I was not a graduate, but I loved to write. I studied in leading beauty institutions, like Helena Rubinstein in London, Lancôme in Paris, Christine Valmy in New York, Schwarzkopf in Germany and Lean of Copenhagen. I believed that if I was highly qualified, I could have the world at my feet. While I was training in London, I came across instances of damage caused by chemical treatments. I became determined to find a natural alternative that was safe and without risks. My study of Ayurveda convinced me that it could provide the answers to the demands of beauty care. I returned to India and started my first herbal salon in my own home in a small way. I rejected the existing treatments and devised my own. I also began to formulate products, using natural ingredients, based on Ayurveda. My beauty company was born in 1970 with the aim to bring best of nature care to Indian women. Today, awareness of beauty products and treatments, fashion and grooming is at an all time high. During the last two decades, the herbal beauty care business has actually shaped the demands and driven the growth of the beauty business in India. With the recent trend towards fitness and youth, more and more people in the older age groups are going in for beauty care. There is increasing awareness of quality and of the ingredients in the product, as well as the benefits of natural /herbal ingredients. Very

recently, a major thrust in growth and demand is towards spa treatments, with salons being converted into day spas, offering both salon and spa treatments. Women are also willing to try newer things to improve the appearance. At the same time, they are aware of risks involved. That is why there is the demand for holistic beauty care, herbal products, spa treatments, fitness and so on. Looking good definitely boosts self-confidence, because it boosts self-esteem. In today’s competitive career world, the appearance counts. For me woman’s Day is a celebration of the Indian woman and the way she has made a mark in every sphere. What is remarkable are not just her achievements, but the fact that she has been able to surmount prejudices and barriers. -

Dr Blossom Kochhar, Chairperson, Blossom Kochhar Group Born in the Nilgiris and I got my name because my father was a coffee planter and Blossom is a very important part of the coffee beans and so he named me thus. My interest in aromatherapy is largely due to the fact that I was born and brought up in the fragrant mountains of Nilgiris. When I got a cold my grandmother treated me with Eucalyptus oil and when I could not sleep or was tensed they used Lavender under my pillow. So beauty care started as a hobby for me. I first started with grooming, from then I carried on with hair. I liked to give women new looks, groom them and consultation. On one of my holidays to Canada, I did a part-time course in beauty. Later, I thought of doing a specialization and started with hair care. I did love to play with natural ingredients to create facial and hair care products that I used on my clients. Selling them was never on my mind. I started my business with a salon in Wellington and then in Delhi at a time when my husband was in army. That is when I looked seriously at aromatherapy as a profession. I linked it with beauty since it beauty requires a holistic approach and the rest is history... Over time, my hobby grew into a business, after which I have never looked back. It has been 30 years now that I have been practicing holistic beauty treatments through aromatherapy. I realised that to bring this to the forefront of beauty care for women, I have to arm myself with in depth knowledge. That is why I did my study and research on aromatherapy. I received double doctorate from India and from Italy. After that I took my passion forward by creating range of aromatherapy products under the brand name Blossom Kochhar Aroma Magic. When I started, the concept of aromatherapy for beauty was not so well

known or even accepted. It was ironical since India has a vast heritage of Ayurveda and working with natural ingredients. In fact without realising even today women here use aromatherapy to treat minor ailments and beauty problems. So I took that forward. I love to bring up the best in women and empower them so that they can look good and feel confident. I believe that it is important to work on every aspect of your body - hair being a permanent accessory needs to be looked after well; makeup to bring out good features; skin to enhance the overall look; and body to improve posture and body language - because this also influences one’s personality. I started the day spa concept here because I felt that women need little pampering. They need a place to go to, where they can unwind and rejuvenate. Women are now ready to try everything, to experiment. They are more fit, more aware and conscious of their needs across all aspects of life. It’s good to see that women are now accepting changes. I think self confidence is closely related to one’s looks. Women’s day makes you realize the importance of being a woman. We as women, have to empower each other. This day symbolizes women empowerment and I think India still has a long way to go.

According to Luthra, the perspective on beauty has changed over the years. “I think beauty is now being looked at more holistically and is no longer looked at as being just skin deep. Emphasis is now on not just applying creams and ointments to address skin related issues, but also looking at nutrition to address the same. It has been firmly established that diet has a direct impact on the quality of skin and hair. There is also a conscious shift towards herbal and natural cosmetics.” Women are now open to trying newer things. She says, “Absolutely. Women are genetically inquisitive people! And, they are open to trying new things. Also, evidence of that is the constant introduction of newer beauty products and services.” Looking good enhances confidence and the sense of self. She says, “We have discovered that when guests come to us for treating their acne or pigmentation or, say, a hair extension, it is basically not just to address the topical problem or need, but also to enhance or regain their selfconfidence. To look good is to feel great.” Woman’s Day, for her, is reinforcing the women power. She insists, “It is a day of celebrating womanhood and I am glad that on that day various initiative are taken by the corporate world and the government to reinforce woman power.”

Vandana Luthra, Chairperson, VLCC Group It all started when Vandana Luthra completed her education in cosmetology and nutrition from Germany and wanted to give shape to her learning. VLCC became the manifestation of that dream. The philosophy behind VLCC was to make health, beauty and fitness accessible to all sections of the society. When she started her first transformation center, what was available to the consumer at that time were either the ‘mom and pop’ beauty parlours that provided the usual beauty salon services or the really expensive five star salons and health clubs. VLCC started as a one-stop solution to all bodyweight, hair and skin related problems. And now she is proud to state that over the years, VLCC has evolved as a reference point for the wellness industry in India, setting new standards for beauty, health and fitness. When VLCC first started, the services and treatments available in the beauty and weight-management space were limited, and were either rather pedestrian offerings or extremely expensive. She explained, “We saw a need gap and consciously addressed it, offering cutting-edge beauty and weight-management solutions at an affordable cost in a hygienic and comfortable environment. The result has been that VLCC is viewed today as an affordable yet aspirational brand.”

Bharti Taneja, Founder

& Director, Bharti Taneja’s Alps Cosmetic Clinic Beauty was my passion from the time I was very young. Before I got married I started my career as a teacher. When the time came for me to restart my career, I decided to take up teaching, but not science and arts to school students but beauty therapy to aspiring aesthetician. In fact it was my mother who put the idea, and she was driving force in helping me to develop the business. She told me to work with what I felt passionate about. So I started with a single room salon some 22 years back, and now have a chain of salons which are more beauty clinics. Training young aestheticians to make a great career out of beauty still remain key for me. The perception of beauty has changed a lot over the few years. 22 years back there were hardly any woman who came to a beauty salon for regular grooming. They only visited occasionally, during weddings and important functions that’s it. But now everybody wants to look beautiful and groomed, so obviously I see more and more young women come in asking for services. It inspires me to think that women take themselves seriously now and that I am able to help them achieve their

sense of self. In fact most young girls today like to follow trends they see in magazines, and are open to beauty experimentation. It shows their confidence in themselves. Looking groomed and well kept I feel is important as it is a mood lifting experience. I feel Women’s Day is our day, and I make it a point every year to do at least one job which is good for the women. This year I have trained underprivileged girls who have passed 10th to be aestheticians. Now they are ready to work in my salon across the city.

is very satisfying to see their skin smile especially when you know that you have achieved this with natural and safe ingredients in a time when chemical and drugs are exploding in the cosmetic market. I feel women need to see that beauty enhancements also have a shelf life just like our bodies do. What you could do at 16, you cannot do at 60. So you really have to understand the body and mind and focus inwards. So I want to tell women on this Women’s Day – just be beautiful naturally.

Suparna Trikha, Founder, Suparna’s Aaveda I was associated with a leading herbal cosmetic chain in the early 90’s at a time when the working women were becoming more aware about her looks. She was becoming concerned about what she was using and how herbal or natural the product was. It was also a time when women were striving hard to being perfect professionals, perfect mothers, wives, daughters, daughters in law, and hostesses. It was the time when the modern age superwoman was evolving. I felt their need, and the need in me to bring something that they could cherish and get true results. Having done most of my education in England and spending my formative years being influenced by my grandfather and the Gurukul Kangri where he was the Chancellor, naturopathy, herbs, homeopathy, ayurveda were very close to me since childhood. That was the period of germination for Suparna’s Aaveda. 15 years ago when I started not many people understood the difference between herbal and natural products. We have worked very hard to try through my columns, tv programmes and radio shows to spread the awareness and start a movement back to nature and considering I have never advertised I think we have done fairly well. At my treatment centre in New Delhi we have visitors from all over the world who have managed to find us. The perception of beauty amongst women then and now is the same - women wanted to be more beautiful in a safe way then and look younger and the same perception is there even now. In fact I think women have become more determined to follow safe natural products and imbibe them in their lifestyle. We are now treating 3rd generation people so my youngest client is about 3 years old and my oldest is 92. Women have to understand that skin and hair care is a lifestyle change and discipline. No beauty company in the world has a magic wand and natural products and their use should be imbibed into children at a very young age as we do not have a future in chemicals. Today when a client comes back a second, third, and fourth time it

Dr Rekha Sheth, Dermatologist & Cosmetologist, Dr Rekha Sheth Skin & Hair Care Dr Rekha Sheth started her medical career as a hard-core dermatologist. After training in Germany in Cosmetic Dermatology her interest was totally aroused. But in those days beauty was looked down upon. So she established herself successfully as a dermatologist and then started giving advice to her patients on cosmetic dermatology. She also started giving talks to various social groups like Indo-American Society, Rotary Club, Lion’s Club, etc. on skin and hair care. In the early 90s, when the concept of medically assisted beauty was just emerging here, Dr Sheth started her own MediSpa – a beauty-cum-dermatology clinic. This was also the time when she realised that the beauticians and young dermatologists needed more specialised approach. She started teaching them about the scientific aspects of the subject – in short, she is one of the pioneers, who brought science to the world of beauty. Her target was the regular women. About the types of patients she was seeing, she says, “I was seeing a large number of patients with mild problems like hair fall, acne and pigmentation, which could have been prevented with the right skin and hair care. Also, I was seeing a lot of infections and reactions because of inadequate beautician care or treatments.” According to her the perception of beauty has changed over the years. She recollects, “In the 80s there were very few people who wanted advice on skin and hair care. In fact, in the mid-80s Professor Albert Kligman, who had researched and found the most effective anti-wrinkle cream – the vitamin A derivative tretinoin – told me to try it out on some Indians. I asked around, I visited a lot of old people’s homes and I also advertised but I did not find a single person who wanted to get rid of their wrinkles! Today, each and every person who comes to me asks for advice on how to delay or treat lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging. So the awareness has increased regarding beauty over the years.” Dr Sheth feels that women are now more open to trying

There’s a new product in town that mimics skin’s natural mechanism to fight skin’s aging process and leave it supple. Try BOXTLAK-BL Cream Wrinkle is a furrow in the skin and is a natural process developed during aging. Premature wrinkles may be caused by deficiency of nutritional components in the different tissues, cellular destruction through excessive sun exposure, the effect of free radicals on the cellular membrane, and deterioration in the genetic programming of the DNA. All this brings about the atrophy of the skin and consequently a general process of degeneration. Ageing skin results from the passage of time, overexposure to the sun that destroys cellular ability to reproduce, lack of proper care while young, health problems and hormonal imbalances. When we express our emotions by smiling, frowning, squinting, our muscles contract thousands of time everyday. These movements exert tension forces to the dermis and results in formation of wrinkles around the mouth, forehead and eyes. One of the most striking signs of skin ageing is the increased wrinkling of the face, neck and the area around the eyes. Wrinkles form due to the effect of constant pull of gravity over time, environmental damage and continued facial expressions.

Now there is a new solution to this premature aging, and photo damage to skin. Shalaks Pharmaceuticals has recently introduced its cosmo-derma product to address this problem. It has developed an anti-aging cream Boxtlak-BL, which promises Botulinum Toxin A like results with regular use. What makes this cream unique is that the peptides mimic the skin’s natural defense mechanism. According to the company the cream stands out from the rest because of the combinations of ingredients that make it effective.

newer things. She explains, “Most definitely – today’s women are very savvy and knowledgeable and well read. Dr Jamuna Pai, Dermatologist & Cosmetologist, Dr Jamuna Pai’s Blush Clinic Dr. Jamuna Pai entered medicine since she was good at academics. She explains, “In my days, it was a given that if you were strong academically that you should become a doctor and hence I did just that.” She studied at the prestigious Nair Hospital in Mumbai, which is where she also met her husband Dr Bhasker Pai. Initially when her children were growing up she worked in the Public Health Department. She wanted to be around during their growing years so the thought of a fulltime career did not interest her. Dr Pai has been passionate about beauty since her childhood and it was during these days when her kids were young that her passion and dreams resurfaced and she would often wonder if she could waste a medical degree for following her dream. It was a realization that beauty in the hands of a doctor would make great sense to discerning people. And most importantly she got support from her family, which prompted her to learn several techniques and the use of machines in beauty. With this knowledge and her medical degree she began to put together treatments for acne, skin lightening, etc. and giving it cosmetic finishing touches, thus creating a whole new school of thought as far as beauty treatments were concerned. There was nobody that she could learn from so over a period of time she put together a number of treatment protocols to treat the Asian skin types. Today her work includes consultation with patients with cosmetic problems, the use of advanced machines for skin tightening, hair removal and resurfacing, advanced skin peels, Botox, dermal fillers and non surgical facial sculpting. Talking about the driving force that made her want to give more to the regular woman, she says, “The realization that skin care is so important to health and how it deeply impacts the way you look and feel good, fascinate me greatly. Also the realization that there is a huge market beyond the niche that was waiting to be explored added to my drive. A little guidance like using sunscreen,

maintaining personal hygiene and taking care of how they look overall went a long way in changing the lives of thousands of women everywhere.” Dr Pai finds surprising the sheer number of women who want to try new things and they hail from all walks of life and span across all age groups. According to her, “They come to me for treatments, but of course, provided that they know it is safe for their skin, that there are no short or long term side effects and it doesn’t worsen the skin if they stop the treatments.” Asked if looking good enhances confidence, she replies that previously it was just in certain types of jobs, for example models and air hostesses who needed to worry about being well groomed and presentable at all times. She says, “But now these qualities have become essential in almost any field that you may choose to enter into may it be the media, medicine, banking etc. Today’s definition of beauty is fast changing and even though you may not be typically beautiful like Marilyn Monroe or Aishwarya Rai, chances are that with the right combination of style, good skin and hair and a confident strut you will also be the recipient of just as many compliments. When you walk into a room and people turn to look at you maybe because of the way you are dressed, the way you do your make up or maybe because of your hair style, it definitely makes your self confidence rise up more than just a few notches.” Women’s Day to her means celebrating being a woman in all its glory. “It means expressing my happiness over being a daughter, daughter-in-law, mother, wife, mother-in-law, grandmother and entrepreneur and hoping that I have done full justice to all these roles.”

Dr Chiranjiv Chabbra, Cosmetic Dermatologist, Skin Alive I was trained as dermatologist 17 years back. At that point of time dermatologist were treating allergies, rashes, eczemas but there was little emphasis on cosmetic dermatology i.e using medical knowledge to improve or enhance the health and beauty of the skin. In Europe and America cosmetic dermatology had reached a certain level of advancement and that got me interested in improving my skills and knowledge in cosmetic dermatology. Two decades back the concept of beauty amongst women was fair skin, good facial features and good clothes. There has been a sea change in how women perceive beauty now. She knows the importance of a healthy, glowing, clear, and blemish free skin. She wishes to have a healthy lustrous and voluminous crop of hair. A healthy toned body and a smart dressing sense along with good skin and hair are the demand of the day.

I think through my practice as a specialist in aesthetic medicine, I have taught people that taking care of their skin should not start after it has got damaged. A good skin care regime should be inculcated in our daily life even as teenagers. Issues like acne, open pores, pigmentation and wrinkles can be treated and even prevented very easily. In my experience very few doctors and skin care consultants are trained in the field of cosmetic medicine. To teach young men and women about skin and hair care regime we first have to create an environment where service providers like dermatologists, plastic surgeons, skin care consultants and counsellors receive an in-depth training in skin care, cosmetic problems and their solutions. It is often said “A THING OF BEAUTY IS JOY FOREVER” If we look beautiful it instils confidence that boost our self esteem. If we are happy with our own self image we can perform any task in a better way whether at home or at work. In today’s time women are going in for various anti ageing techniques surgical and non surgical and various procedure to improve their body image like nose, jaw, breast augmentation, tummy tuck etc. With advancement in the medical field various treatments are available that are scientific, affordable and safe. If there is something about body image that bothers women or interferes with their self esteem, they can go in for a medical procedure after consultation with their doctor. On this Women’s Day I would tell women to empower themselves that is the true way to liberation. We should develop skills that help the society at large but at the same time should not neglect our families.

Vidya Tikari, Makeup Expert, Vidya Tikari Studio I grew up among idyllic tea and coffee plantations in Papua New Guinea, where, apart from our immediate family, we didn’t see another human being for days. I must’ve been around 5 when an aunt of mine gave me a big cardboard box of her discarded makeup because she was leaving the country. Mesmerised by those broken tubes of shiny lipstick and cracked eye shadow, I knew this is what I was born to do. My first client was my cat. I put green eye shadow on her eyes and painted her lips red and paraded her around with a scarf tied around her head. My brothers were my next victims for me to experiment on, but they usually managed to escape! I finished school and I didn’t know what to do with my life. It was my father who suggested that I pursue make-up as a career option. It was as if a light bulb had come on inside my head. I think my parents always knew that I was meant to do something in the beauty business. So I went off to

beauty school for 2 years in Australia. When I started out almost two decades back, Indian women would not go beyond kajal and lipstick. In terms of cosmetics in the market, there was only trash available. Now, we get high quality products that sit so well on the skin. Indian women don’t take to unnatural stuff. Since the products now available are high quality and have natural ingredients, women are more eager to use them. The market has certainly opened up – good makeup is becoming as essential as a good wardrobe, and women are more willing to experiment with different looks. I’d say I made a difference to how women look at grooming by introducing women to superior quality products for both skin and hair, as well as the right way of using them. Also, guiding women to what is best suited to their lifestyle. For instance, what I’d suggest to a sportswoman would be very different from what I’d suggest to a model; what’s great for a homemaker would not work for a woman in the corporate world. When you start taking care of yourself, it is a sign that you love yourself for who you are. The world takes notice of this, and reflects back to you more ‘feel good’ vibes. But a good beauty regime alone may not be enough to instill long-lasting confidence. A nutritious diet, regular exercise, an overall healthy lifestyle and a positive attitude are all equally important. What can make a huge difference is the right education and training of the sales people. Most of them are not well-informed about the products they are selling. They need to know everything about the ingredients and correct application. Only when they are ‘with it’ will they have the authority to convince the customer. Do whatever you feel like. Experiment and see what works for you. If you are traditionally inclined, enjoy creating that image. It’s also great to be inspired by Western trends, but they have to be adapted to suit Indian skin and mentality. For instance, trying the Lady GaGa look could go so wrong here. All I would like to say is that, be what you desire to be; be at your best all the time, just for yourself.

I was in England for 3 years from 1970 to 1972 and wanted to study something interesting and by chance I came across a hairdressing course, which interested me. major part of my life. Next I had to start a business. I am though grateful for all that it has given back to me, the joy of constantly seeing the changing world and thus staying connected, the wonderful people, be it client or all the ones that have worked with and for me, and the joy of knowing my own capabilities. It all was very overwhelming. There was no professional hair dressing in India when I started in 1978 and the driving force was to cut, colour and style hair as professionally as it was done in England where I had studied hairdressing. It was the new venture of my life at the time, and the only way for me to explore this future. The perception of beauty has changed over the years. As a career: We brought the science of hairdressing into India and were the first salon to train hairdressers. Ever since L’Oreal and Wella came into India further encouragement was given to young people to take to hairdressing as a career and with the advent of these global companies I am glad to say that hair dressing was being approved even by Indian parents to encourage their children into this career. Hence hairdressing has opened up as a chosen career by many people. From regular women’s perspective, the world is now a very small place. The trends that start in other places find their way here almost immediately. The age of the Internet and global TV makes it visually possible to know what is going-on. And so now, the client has a broader spectrum of choices. She is more aware. She knows what her options are and where she will get them. I feel that women are now more open to trying newer things. The world has changed so much since the time we started hairdressing. Young people are much more adventurous and they do try out many new styles. If I may say so people (both women and men) are willing to risk a haircut, colour, straightening, perm, etc. for that chance of it not only looking good, but also to be trend-setters of sorts. Safe is no longer the only option. It’s extremely important for every human being to spend a few moments everyday on their hair and skin. I believe each women is attractive, but let’s be honest here looking one’s best isn’t a bad thing! Not to be skin-deep, but if one is groomed, she would feel better and exude confidence. For me Women’s Day has a special meaning. Women do have a lot of strength. I have met innumerable women who are made of such solid substance they run their homes, businesses and lives with such sincerity, focus and hard work without losing their femininity. Today’s women are capable of doing any man’s job as well or better than them.

Namita Jain, Fitness Expert & Founder, Jaldi Fit I have aways been interested in sports. I used to be a competitive swimmer in school. In addition I enjoyed table tennis, squash and badminton. One day my swimming pool shut down for repair and so I enrolled in a fitness class. That’s when my interest in the whole subject of fitness started - I was eager to learn more. But I had no idea then that I would take it up as a profession. As the years went by, my interest grew – and I didn’t realize I was plunging deeper and deeper – and now here I am – a full time wellness expert. In India women were hesitant to lift weights – they would just walk and include yoga for fitness. Today more and more women realize the value of incorporating a strength training routine to keep fit. Physicians too, are recommending resistance training exercises to prevent conditions such as osteoporosis and back pain. Taking into account this change in mind-set, I have recently launched my Jaldi Fit strength workout book and DVD. I feel my work has been able to help quite a few women. Fitness isn’t just about a better body, it does wonders for the mind as well. Exercise is a great stress buster. Stress can cause the face muscles to tense and look tired; it can also result in hair fall and can increase the risk of ailments such as high blood pressure. When women learn to unplug and switch off from daily chores and devote time to look after their health, not only does their body image improve, but it keeps the spirits soaring high. I have actively been involved in the wellness space for over 20 years. I hold group fitness classes for students in Mumbai, write columns for newspapers and magazines, covering health issues such as nutrition, exercise and related topics. In the field of rehabilitation, I offer consultations to a well-known hospital in Mumbai, structuring training programs for people with special needs, training the trainers and conducting specialized classes. Over the years, I have developed a broad-based foundation, encompassing clinical exercise, Pilates, sports medicine, nutrition, weight, and lifestyle management. I strongly believe if you ignore your health today you’ll face the repercussions later and will then be compelled to look after your health. So stay fighting fit now and always. When you look good, you feel good. Investment in good health, improves your energy levels, work productivity and the quality of your personal life, too. My message to women out there is develop your mind and your talents. Take time to look after your health. Exercise regularly. Laugh, enjoy and love life.

Perfect pout for the contemporary woman is soft, yet bright in warm tones of peach, coral and apricot.

As with everything, there is a sense of revival, a longing to return to everything that’s intrinsic. So the lips of the millennium woman is supple, pliable indicating an inner warmth, and desire for inner balance. The lip colour is creamy, shimmering but vivid and applied with finger rather than a brush.

It is often said that the length of your hem defines your financial status, and your sense of self. But who knew that the colour and the way you apply lipstick can define who you are in a big way. By Ruby Chakraborty

There is an interesting connection between your emotions of the moment, personality and the shape of your lips post application of lipstick. In fact chairman of cosmetic biggie Estee Lauder, Leonard Lauder coined a term called Lipstick Indicator to define the phenomenon of increased sales of lipsticks during tough times whether economic or social. Moreover psychoanalysts explain that for women wearing lipstick is like donning an armour to face the challenges that the world throw at them. Interestingly, lipstick or lip paint – one of the oldest known cosmetics – has been through major controversies over the ages. But by the time we hit 20th century wearing lipstick became a symbol of power and self expression for women.

Full Mouth

If you draw a full mouth with symmetrical curves it means you are a self-assured woman who has a strong sense of identity, and responsibility. You are capable of filling roles traditionally occupied by males. For you your lipstick is symbol of strength without letting your inner thoughts out. Wear a crimson or vermillion shade for most impact.

Square Lips

You like to draw your lips with square edges and a defined ‘V’ on the upper lip; then you are a perfectionist. You can even border on austere, but have the strength to face any challenge. This is the lip of a woman with very mature viewpoint and a steely determination. Soften the severity of this style by picking up a feminine pink hue in silky or creamy texture.

Heart Shaped Pout

If you love to wear this shape, then you are true female at heart, with a flirty, seductive nature. You like to enjoy life to the hilt. You don’t mind pushing the envelope a little extra to state your independence. You are fun loving. To get the shape right draw a little inside of your natural lip line. A rich brown or garnet red are perfect hues for you.

Voluptuous Lips

If you draw your mouth by extending the lip line a little beyond your natural shape and filling in with a rich colour then you love all things that stimulate your senses. You are attracted to sensory pleasures, and often have a sensual mien. You are feminine, yet have a cool self confidence in your abilities. But you might often be torn in conflict over opposing emotions. Enhance your femininity by wearing shades like pink red, copper, and earthy pink.

HAIR

Wave Length

Long hair is back with a bang for spring. Grow yours or add extensions to give hippie hair a chic twist with natural looking waves.

Stow away your crimpers and curling iron. Turn your straight long hair wavy the old fashioned way for oodles of natural sensuality. Simply mist your strands with water and make tight braids. For bigger waves use larger sections of hair. Keep it on till hair dries naturally, or use a flatiron to press the braids till they dry. Then open and finger comb. Steer clear of finishing products for completely au naturel effect.

FREe Style

There are no hair rules this season. There’s not too much structure in styles either. It is all about working on your individuality – go long, go short, go smooth, go choppy. by Ruby

Chakraborty

2010 is a great year for hair styling; as expert stylists move away from the trodden path and refuse to stick with one cut or style. No longer is it necessary for you to sport poker straight hair even if you have naturally wavy strands just because your best friend or the next door neighbour is sporting he style. It is all about versatility. It is about showcasing your individual personality, and reflecting your sense of self. Experts are taking inspiration from glamour eras – 50’s, 70’s, 80’s – and giving them a modern twist. The tilt is towards longer, softer, feminine styles – grown out pixies, longer bobs, waves, and even poker straight hair. The Short The short styles are also longer really short and crisp. Rather most

reach till your ears. Even the erstwhile androgynous cut has a softer edge to it, and a rounded shape. •

The classic, precision bob with a fringe still remains hot. But you have to keep the shape of your face in mind. Thin longish faces look good in this. Also try to keep the hair shining with health for sleek, chic look.

For women with heart shaped face or stronger jaw line and wavy hair, below the ear, layered bob work best.

If you have curly hair go for bell shaped cut with long layer starting just below your chin.

If you are looking to grow out your hair then ask for a soft, side-parted bob that is longer in the front and graduated in the back. It should also be slightly asymmetrical, and the heavier side should be layered all over so it doesn’t feel too block-like. As a general rule, make sure the layers aren’t shorter than cheekbone-length

The Middle This season the mid length hair is longer than usual, falling below your shoulders. The texture is more wavy than straight. Instead of beach head, the trend is towards blunt cut style with pumped up curls or waves. • Long shaggy cut is back in fashion. It is a great transitional style. Try a heavily, uneven, layered cut that hits your collarbone. Get long bangs put that are slightly past your eyebrows, and can be side swept easily. This look works best with a bit of body, so apply a volumizing mousse, when hair is damp, then tousling hair and letting it air dry. • If you have thick, wavy hair then try a cut that has more width than height, with enhanced waves a la 70’s retro. To get the look cut your hair one length just below your shoulders in a straight blunt. Then part hair in the middle, and use curl enhancing serum on wet hair and let it air dry for a stacked wavy style. • Try a soft textured mid length style like in the 50’s. Ask for a choppy, textured cut that’s long and have layers that start at ear length and go all the way around the head. Avoid getting and bangs or face framing pieces. Try this if you have thick wavy hair. Use a curling iron to define the waves at the end.

The Long This length is all the rage this season. Really long hair is being seen as a statement of true femininity. Also this is a low maintenance style. • If you have thick wavy or curly hair then ask for layers at three different level, starting lower lip. Get another one at the collarbone, and the last one falling at the breast. To avoid the graduated look, ask the stylist to cut long layers and blend the sections well. • If you have normal volume hair, get same length cut all around, and then add very subtle layers to the ends to keep it from looking stiff and heavy. • Classic straight tress parted in the middle is very in this year. After all the tousled wave style, suddenly this look of yore seems fresh. This is best for girls with poker straight hair. Get hair cut straight, at on length without any face framing pieces. Part in the middle and brush down straight.

Big Bang This is one cut that can never be out of style. Bangs, fringes thick or wispy have been doing the rounds since the late sixties. Longer eyebrow/eye skimming styles will be popular this season. • On hair that’s thick and straight, get bangs cut that start very back far on your head, end just below your eye brows. They should be blunt, and thick with no layers and perfectly straight. • Layered bangs worn on the side is on versatile cut. This is good for wavy hair, and goes well with long layered strands. • Loose slightly shaggy fringe looks good on fine to medium hair. Make sure that the cut is heavily layered and start from your cheekbones going all around your head. It makes a sweeping style. For variation you can ask for layers starting at the collarbone. • If you have great cheekbones then try this. Ask for thick, rounded, eyelash-length, and completely blunt bangs with absolutely no tapering around the face, plus a few long layers in the rest of the hair.

True

Identity

Daily styling and care would be so much easier if you played along with your hair’s natural texture; so often easy to misjudge. by Gayatri

It’s so easy to get dissatisfied with what you have, and seek ways to alter the natural state. But the eternal truth is that you look best if you can enhance your natural assets, and play them up for timeless style. That goes for your hair as well. While you might try chemical treatments to straighten your curls or get waves put, but the maintenance can be a pain if you have a busy lifestyle. Unlike earlier years, the current crop of stylists and hair experts recommend working with you natural hair texture. It is healthier for the strands and easier for you to maintain. Says Manju Bijlani Stylist, Nalini and Yasmeen, Mumbai, “It is not practical for anybody to style their hair everyday and spend hours blow drying and setting their hair hence it is extremely important that we work with one’s natural texture so that you are able to wash and wear the style and it still looks well kept. Well, if a stylist works with a client’s natural texture, the client can be taught simple quick styling techniques that can be used daily and the hair can still look very stylish.”

Deciding the structure

Trichologist, Dr. Apoorva Shah explains, “The texture, and structure of the hair plays a very important role in styling of the hair. Actually it is your texture which decides how you should style your hair.” In fact most of us tend to just classify our hair as dry or oily, and curly or straight. That’s when the problem of bad styling comes up. Actually hair is determined by the structure, thickness and quality of the strands. Hair structure can be curly or straight. Curly hair may be wavy or may have medium to tight coils. Curly hair has too much variation due to its curl pattern. “Curly hair is easy to work with. You have endless options to style them,” adds Manju. In fact the classification is based on the structure of your hair. The three main types include Straight, Wavy and Curly. Once your structure is determined, a stylist then checks for the thickness of the strands, and quality of your hair which can be coarse, dry or silky. Explains Manju, “Different hair types can be handled well with different kinds of styling products meant for that particular kind of hair, e.g. straight hair can be styled by blast drying the hair using a little bit of serum. Curly hair can be styled using curl saver mousse. Wavy hair can be styled with a little bit of L’Oreal Professionnel’s liss control kind of products that weigh down the hair a bit and short hair using different kinds of hair wax.”

Check the condition

Once you know the natural structure of your hair, next you should decide on the natural condition of your locks. In fact the condition of your hair can change from season to season, and city to city.

So you have dry hair which happens when oil glands in scalp are inactive and they lack moisture. This can be a natural condition and may get aggravated by exposure to the sun, using harsh shampoos and any chemical treatment. Another reason for dry hair is blocking of pores by accumulation of oil on the scalp. They look dull and dry with split ends. “Dry hair needs lot of care and nourishment. After shampooing, dry hair becomes frizzy. Before shampoo, ends look dry. This type of hair breaks off easily. Scalp feels itchy and dry. Sometimes, you can observe dry flakes of skin in the scalp. Caring for dry hair should be part of daily regime. To protect them from the action of chemicals and pollution, use mild shampoo. Avoid excess use of hair dryers and curlers on dry hair,” advices Dr Shah. According to him, people with oily skin have oily hair generally. Hair becomes oily because of excessive secretion of oil from glands. Scalp also gets oily. “Oily hair needs to be washed too often. You can wash them daily or every other day. For oily hair, oils and shampoos having henna and neem are very good,” says the doctor. Then you have what is called combination hair – a problem that many women face but do not understand. In this you have grease scalp and dry ends with splits. In this case you will actually have to use a shampoo for oily hair, and a conditioner for damaged hair. Avoid getting the conditioner near your scalp. The best type of hair is the balanced hair or normal hair which has a natural shine, and the scalp is in perfect condition. It is easy to maintain, and a boon. So treat such hair well with proper care and a well balanced diet.

Straight Hair: There is no curl or wave in straight hair and it is taken as the base to categorize all hair. It is type 1 hair. Straight hair is shiny and fine, which has no curls. Total absence of waves makes the light to reflect back and give shinier appearance to the hair. To maintain the health, shine and beauty of straight hair, proper care is a must otherwise they look dull and damaged. Wavy Hair: This is the second type of hair texture.

This is type 2 hair and can further be classified as 2A, 2B or 2C. Hair of type 2A is fine and soft while 2B type of hair is medium textured. Type 2C hair is coarse, thick and frizzy. Hair Type 2 shows natural “S” type pattern. This type is the most versatile to work with. You can get them straight or you can have tight curls also. Medium Curly Hair: Hair of this type has tight curls. There is a lot of volume in these hair and can have different styles. These hairs are strong but

With the modern day penchant for chemical treatments on the hair, now you get what is called the sensitive hair. Manju differentiates such hair into two categories. “Sensitive hair can genetic. Such hair is fine and delicate and breaks very easily. The second type is chemically treated mane which makes the strands very porous, and breakable. Either ways this kind of hair should be cared for with treatments at a hair spa and protein based therapies.

Deal with your hair

According to Dr. Apoorva Shah, internal and external factors can lead to severe damages of the hair structure which results in diminished volume, the lack of lustre, increased roughness and a high tendency for spliced or broken hair. He adds, “Usually damages in structure also lead to dehydration of the hair. In light cases suited care products can solve the listed problems. But harmful external factors such as the use of a hot hair dryer or a curling iron need to be avoided. A shampoo for dry hair smoothens and restores the affected surface, thus a worsening can be prevented. When

not as shiny as straight hair as they do not reflect light. When wet, they tend to shrink a bit. Curls of these hair are quite spring like, if you stretch them; they come back to their original position. To get them straight is quite a challenging task. This type of hair can be further categorized as 3A, 3B and 3C. The pattern in 3A type of hair has loose curls while in type 3B hair curls are tighter. 3C type of hair has tighter curls and rather shows kinky waves.

hair is already broken only a new hair cut can help. But also with a new hair cut a mild shampoo should be used in order to counteract future damages. However, it is very important to consult a Trichologist for proper treatment.” According to Manju damaged hair should be nourished by giving it keratin treatment, so that the lost proteins are deposited back into the hair. Adding to this Dr Shah says, “Rub oil into your scalp, leave it on overnight and shampoo and rinse the oil out next morning. Run your hair through cold water. This will lock in the moisture. Wash your hair in warm or cool water, not hot. Use a shampoo rich in Vitamin E. Use a leave-in conditioner.” You have to be extra careful when dealing with damage. Simply avoid shampooing too often. Doing so more than once a day will dry out the hair and scalp. Reduce the use of the hairdryer. The hot air will dry and damage your hair. If you do use a dryer, use the cool setting. To handle frizz, and flyaways Manju advices using leave in conditioner if you have thick coarse hair, or try a smoothing serum on medium to fine hair.

Banish Headache

If you feel a migraine coming on, stop the pain before it starts. Simply make a pot of ginger tea and drink it.

Researchers at Cornell Medical University College have found in a recent experiment that ginger extract laced tea can combat the onset of major headache due to the root’s ability to block the effects of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are substances that cause inflammation of the blood vessels in the brain, which leads to migraines. Buy fresh ginger of the Indian variety and grate into your tea brew. It is also great to open up your sinuses.

Get Fit With Pilates Bring back balance to your posture; lengthen your stature through core strength, flexibility, and awareness of your body that Pilates teaches you. By Nabanita Das

The secret of Pilates lies in few main principles - precision and control. All exercises are performed within strictly limited amount of repetitions. Pilates is always about quality over quantity. “Our body has to be treated as one with our mind, but more importantly we have to be aware of the movement, we have to use the power of our visualization to move deep muscles and make a perfect move. As one will notice everything that makes one exercising system is interconnected and every aspect is important to achieve best results,” says Pilates Expert, Vesna Jacob.

unpleasant, uncomfortable or painful and all exercises can be effectively done in a fairly short period of time. The difference is in its holistic approach and the philosophy behind is that our body should be treated as one with the accent on our central part ‘Core’ or ‘Powerhouse’,” adds Vesna. The

Pilates represents a unique system of exercises invented by Joseph H. Pilates some 90 years ago. Joseph Pilates, born in Germany in 1880 was a very sick and weak as a child and he dedicated his life in creating a method which can be used by everybody regardless to ones physical condition. He was studying various methods from yoga to Greek wrestling and during the World War I, came up with a unique system which he called “body contrology”, which proved itself as very effective way not only to build and maintain strong physical body, but also to improve immune system.

The Pilates Difference The Pilates method is completely different from other forms of exercises. Pilates himself said, “Hundred repetitions of some exercise can never achieve as one properly executed movement.” It is not so much about sweating it out, as much as using your own body to bring back your balance and improve your form. “Exercising is never supposed to be

‘Powerhouse’ represents muscles in our abdominal, back, and pelvis area and exercises are particularly designed to address deep transversus muscles in the abdomen. Pilate’s system develops long, lean muscles, shapes our body, decreases fat, and improves our posture, increases immune system and decreases stress and tiredness. It improves our

Working with Pilates “This system at the first was mainly established to help recovery of injured dancers, but quickly proved itself as beneficial for everybody. You can choose to add Pilates exercises to your already existing workout plan - a lot of professional athletes use Pilates as additional workout to the existing routine - or to use it on its own. So anyone from someone who is not very fit or someone who is recovering from any injury to someone with average fitness to a professional athlete can start practicing,” explains Vesna. Just make sure you find a proper teacher with experience to teach you basics irrespective of the fitness levels.

stability, balance and flexibility. Pilates unifies elements of stretching, ballet and yoga into amazingly effective combination which benefits everybody.

While it is absolutely impossible to standardize the response of the human body to any kind of exercise system or diet, it is safe to say that you will ‘feel’ the results before you see them. Usually by the fourth or the fifth class you start feeling the results of the exercise system. In 3 to 6 months if there are no metabolic issues and the technique is correct there is no reason why you cannot end with the body shape you desire.

Basic Pilate’s Moves When doing Pilates we have to be aware of the movement through concentration, we have to use the power of our visualization to move deep muscles and make a perfect movement through precision and control. All exercises should be done from The Core having neutral spine (alignment), movements must flow graciously into each other while breathing technique should be given a particular importance. 1. IMPRINTING : Perfect way to get centred before you begin your Pilates workout. It helps you lengthen and relax your spine, and settle in to your body. Begin by lying on your back with your arms by your sides, knees bent, and feet flat on the floor. It is neutral spine position allowing your spine to rest with its natural curves. Now relax your body part by part including your jaw and throat. Relax spine and let it drop into the floor, breathing deeply to fill in your lungs. Do for 3 to 5 breathings for 5 minutes or more.

2. PELVIC CURL: Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Make sure that your feet,

ankles, and knees are aligned and at hip distance apart. Inhale. Bring your breath into your chest, then belly, and down to the pelvic floor. Exhale. Release the breath from the pelvic bowl, the belly, and then the chest. Do a pelvic tilt by engaging the abdominal muscles and pulling your bellybutton down toward your spine. Let that action continue so that the abs press the lower spine into the floor. Inhale and press down through your feet allowing the tailbone to begin to curl up toward the ceiling. The hips raise, then the lower spine, and, finally, the middle spine. You will come to rest on your shoulders at the level of your shoulder blades, with a nice straight line from your hips to your shoulders. Do not arch beyond this point. Be sure to support this movement with the abdominals and hamstrings. Exhale and use abdominal control to roll the spine back down to the floor. Repeat this exercise 3 to 5 times. 3. THE HUNDRED: It is a classic exercise to strengthen your core. It warms up the abdomen and lungs. You have to be coordinated in your breathing to get this right. Lie on your back with your legs bent in tabletop position with your shins and ankles parallel to the floor. Inhale and exhale, then bring your head up with your chin down and, using your abs, curl your upper spine up off the floor. Keep the shoulders engaged in the back. Your gaze is down into the abdominals.

Inhale and exhale and extend your arms and legs - your legs can be as low

as you can go without shaking and without the lower spine jumping up off the mat. Your arms just a few inches off floor, with the fingertips reaching for the far wall. Take five short breaths in and five short breaths out (like sniffing in and puffing out). While doing so, move your arms in a controlled up and down manner - a small pumping of the arms in unison with your breath. Be sure to keep your shoulders and neck relaxed. It is the abdominal muscles that should be doing all the work. Do a cycle of 10 full breaths. Each cycle is five short in-breaths and then five short out-breaths. Finally keep your spine curved as you bring your knees in toward your chest. Grasp your knees and roll your upper spine and head back to the floor. Take a deep breath in and out.

Holistic Path

to Diet

Eating organic is just not enough; eat your fruits, vegetables and cereals in original form as meant by nature. by

Gayatri T Rao

Rules of Holistic Diet Regime •

• • •

History has it that agriculture has been organic from time immemorial. It is only during the 20th century due to industrialization new synthetic chemicals were used to produce food. Organic production means most of the time organic or natural fertilizers and pesticides are used. Only in dire cases are inorganic fertilizers are used when farming organically. In organic animal husbandry, the animals are grown without the routine use of antibiotics and growth hormones and generally fed a healthy diet.

AD

Eating holistic food should be actually taken as a regime. Follow these conditions: Change gradually so that changes won’t seem so drastic and difficult to stick with. Monitor your body’s response. Read the labels carefully to have organic food without any processing. Remember that holistic nutrition leads to a better quality of life and a higher level of functioning of bodily organs. All food should be organic as much as possible. Avoid junk food and processed food. Avoid food with additives and preservatives. Avoid sugar and caffeine. Drink adequate amounts of pure water, filtered and free of chlorine and other contaminants. Avoid microwave foods. Eat whole foods in their natural state as much as possible.

According to Dr Vaidehi Nawathe, Chief Dietician, Bhaktivedanta Hospital, Mumbai opting for organic foods is important as they are a simple way of reducing toxin burden of pesticides and food additives in the body. “It increases nutrient intake, and alters consumption patterns away from less healthy choices. Organic food isn’t a luxury. It’s how food is supposed to be and a valuable part of any regimen intended to maintain, improve or restore health,” explains Dr. Nawathe.

Recipe for Organic Pumpkin Moong Bean Soup

Not just organic Organic food is a better alternative to conventional food, but it also has some of the draw-backs like high cost, unavailability and at the same time all natural food is always not beneficial as it also can have some unwanted bacteria or other micro-organisms. It is the need of the times for us to shift to organic food is that today, our land is becoming infertile and the soil is becoming toxic and the organic matter of soil is being rapidly depleted. It’s not enough to try organic food but eat what is called the holistic diet. “Holistic food is food in its original state as found in nature. It is unprocessed and without additives. It is food that nourishes and rejuvenates a person as a whole, providing benefits to the body, the mind and the soul, strengthening the immune system. It retains its natural properties throughout the course of preparation,” explains the dietician. Holistic nutrition uses various combinations of food and nutrients to help individuals achieve optimal mental, physical and spiritual health. “The focus is on eating foods that provide your body with the highest levels of nutritional value and supplementing the diet with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, etc. when necessary. However, it is much more than just eating a balanced diet. As not only the contents of the diet matter, but also the way the food is cooked, stored and consumed is also important,” says Dr. Nawathe.

Going macrobiotic Dr. Nawathe explains, “Macrobiotics is actually a balanced lifestyle, living life in a healthy and holistic way. The actual word macro-biotic originates from the Greek language and means ‘great or large life’. Man, as a part of nature, needs to live in harmony and co-operation with it. This includes eating foods from the area in which you live and also use of the seasonal foods which are readily available. Foods that help us remain centred are whole grains, vegetables, vegetable protein, nuts, seeds, vegetables, etc. And there is no use of sugar, refined salt, meat and hot spices, refined flours, dairy foods and also the foods with the preservatives or additives.” The important factor of this diet is that our organs need different types of food on a regular basis to keep them healthy, which is available from this form of diet. In macrobiotic diet you have to ensure to intake five main types of food like sweet, sour, salty, pungent (like

Ingredients: 1 cup moong dal 1 cup white pumpkin cleaned and cut into 2-3 inch cubes 4 cups water 1 tbsp ghee 1 tsp cumin 1-2 bay leaves 6 curry leaves 1 tsp coriander seeds ½ tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp ginger paste 3-4 kokum ½ teaspoon coriander-cumin powder Rock salt Method: Wash the moong bean (mung dal). Add the pumpkin, pressure cook in two cups of water for 10 minutes. Cool and grind in a blender and add one cup of water to it. Add ghee, roasted cumin, bay leaf, curry leaves and the coriander seeds. Pour in the soup, mix well and add coriander-cumin powder, ginger paste, turmeric and salt. Finally stir in the kokum and boil the soup for a few minutes. This soup can be served with some oats sprinkled on it or incorporating some nuts like walnuts / almonds. For variation some chopped figs can be added.

ginger) and bitter. In fact this actually blurs the line between macrobiotic and holistic diet.

Wholesome holistic food Holistic food is food in its’ original state as found in nature. It is unprocessed, without additives. It is food that nourishes and rejuvenates a person as a whole, providing benefits to the body, the mind and the soul, strengthening the immune system. It retains its natural properties throughout the course of preparation. In their natural state, foods are comprised of the five basic elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space - creating balance through a flavourful combination of the six tastes (bitter, salty, pungent, hot, sour, and sweet) into a delicious meal. Now to get the most of your diet, you have to pay heed to each taste and its impact on you and your taste buds. According to the doctor, you have to eat every meal in a happy state of mind. She adds, “Eat with proper frame of mind. Avoid depression or worry when eating your meals. This is because all tissues in the body are energy reserves. Body creates energy from the food we eat. Fresh food has life energy called prana. Prana is a healing energy. When not eaten with positive thoughts, you lose the benefits of the prana. Processed foods may have calories, but absolutely no prana. It is not that we don’t have time. It’s not our priority, so we can’t make time. Once we understand that fresh food is absolutely critical for our health, we will make time.” Food not only has to be organic, but also the way it is prepared, stored, consumed is important, which can have the impact on our health. Whatever may be the food choice, it should be practical at the same time healthy. Dr Nawathe says, “Right method of cooking and eating with proper frame of mind with a balance between increasing life demands and adequate mental and physical exercises can definitely have a positive impact on health. Average family spends five times more on junk food, take-away food, alcohol and tobacco than on fruits and vegetables and five times more on entertainment activities (movies, etc.) than on recreation (walking / exercises). People should understand the importance of the right choice. Also kitchen / terrace farming can be promoted and it is practical and inexpensive. If family members are trained in the same, we can get food without the chemicals.” If you follow these conditions, you will find more balance and harmony in your mental, physical and spiritual well being.

Soothe Stressed

Scalp

With all the chemical treatments, environmental irritants, your scalp is more sensitive to infections and problems than ever before. You worry about thinning hair, hair breakage, damaged strands and use products to deal with them. But the real problem lies in the scalp. A healthy scalp means healthy hair – it brings the right nourishment to the roots. Besides the ubiquitous dandruff, other scalp issues include peeling, itching, and fungal infection; major causes of discomfort and embarrassment. Dr Ashith M Shah, Head- Panel of Trichologists, RichFeel talks about some common scalp problems and ways to banish them. •

Many scalp issues arise due to seasonal changes and change in the temperature which impacts your scalp’s natural sebum balance. So in winter you might find it ore dry and prone to flakiness.

Dandruff can also arise due to stress in your life. This actually contributes to hair fall as well.

To fight flakiness regular massaging of the scalp with oil is very important as it improves circulation to the roots. Also keep the scalp hydrated by drinking at least two litres of water daily.

Too much root touch ups and ammonia in hair colour can harm the natural state of the scalp. I am against colouring, which is not possible for many women to follow; so I advice on cutting down on the visits to your colourist to give your scalp time to breathe.

Try to use ammonia free hair colour. Post colouring every time; go for a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week. This will protect your strands and soothe your scalp.

If you have very sensitive scalp, and are prone to break outs then it is a good idea to check with a scalp and hair doctor. In case of utter sensitivity you might be suffering from hormone related issues, then we prescribe hormonal tablets to deal with it.

Another reason for sensitivity could be mineral deficiency in your body, in that case we do the relevant tests and then prescribe relevant minerals to replenish it in your body.

how to...

Get pretty

peepers

Beautiful eyes are not just about getting the eye makeup right. It is about having a smooth under eye area sans the puffiness, and dark circle; perfectly groomed brows and healthy lash line. For us Indian women well-shaped eyebrows are key to frame our strong features, and colouration. In fact doing up the eyes is an important aspect of makeup for most Indian girls. Tired eye area can mar your look. So we got Beauty Expert and Aesthetician Bharti Taneja to give us tips on making your eye area attractive.

To get lush lashes and eyebrows, you can gently massage the area with olive oil or almond oil daily at night. Keep on for about half an hour and wipe off with wet cotton ball before going to bed. You can also try castor oil if your lashes are scanty.

Ensure to go for regular professional eyebrow grooming sessions. Get a shape that enhances the shape of your face. Opt for winged or slightly arched shape since rounded brows are outdated. Also avoid thinning out your brows. Thick brows frame face better.

If you have sparse brows then opt for permanent eyebrow makeup. The permanent eyebrow makeup remains as it for 15 years at least. If you have very thick brows or unruly ones then try laser treatment to bring them into shape.

When growing out your brows always cover the small hair with lightweight foundation, then use a sandy beige or white eye shadow under the brow to enhance the brow shape.

Whatever be the shape and thickness of your brows, always use a dark brown eyeshadow or brow pencil to enhance the shape and set with a clear mascara.

Even if you do not use eye shadows or liners, but always sweep your lashes with a black or dark brown mascara, and use eye liner close to your upper lash line to open up tired eyes.

Health problems like anaemia, bad liver, working in front of computers, and lack of sleep can lead to dark circles, and puffy eye bags. Fine lines and crepey skin can also appear. Always use an eye gel under your

makeup to reduce puffiness, and an under eye cream at night to reduce fine lines and dark circles. •

At home gently tap and massage almond oil, and use a blend of rose water and cucumber juice to freshen up tired eyes, and fight dark circles.

Always remember to remove the eye makeup every night before going to bed with an eye makeup remover. Use a light face wash on the area post makeup removal to clean up residual gunk.

how to...

Care for your

curls

You blame the weather, your genes, and just about anything whenever you put comb through your hair as it tangles through your mass of curls. You have grown up fighting against your curls, torturing them with treatments, and straightening irons. But over the last few seasons, hair experts have taken up on the versatility that curly hair offers. So suddenly your corkscrew curls are no longer bad news.Your loose s-shaped version is also much in demand, as spring hair calls for feminine styles. However curly hair can be super dry, and need extra care to remain fabulous and not frizzy. Hair stylist Shanti from Harry & Shanti Salon in Delhi gave us pointers to keep your curls in top shape. •

Avoid cutting very curly hair very short. Stick to at least shoulder length hair. Get a U shaped style with long layers to handle heavy curls.

Since curly hair is dry you don’t need to shampoo every day. But do use a conditioner in the shower, or apply a leavein conditioner to your wet hair to weigh them down.

To give structure to your curls take a dollop of curl defining mousse in your palms, and run through your wet hair. Then let it air dry.

If you need to blow dry, always use diffuser, and use your fingers to roll out the curls. You can also scrunch your hair when it’s partially dry for more definition.

To get a day long wet look, take little baby oil in your palms rub them together and evenly distribute through partially wet hair. As it dries the oil will give it a sleek, frizz free look.

Use wide toothed comb or your fingers to comb your hair. Avoid brushes at all cost.

At night always put up your curls in a soft bun to get tamed hair in the morning.

Use moisturising oil like olive or almond oil before every shampoo. Massage through scalp and apply generously to your strands. Then wash and condition as usual. The oil is a natural conditioner, and keeps the curls soft, and supple.

Tress Tending Lotus Caresse for Dry Hair At Lakme Studio

The high levels of pollution in the city, and super dry weather had made my tresses very rough. They were looking weaker and duller than ever. What I needed was a big dose of deep conditioning treatment to strengthen my strands and bring back the shine. I had recently heard about the special hair care therapies at the newly revamped Lakme Studio. I decided to try one out that will rid me of my tress trouble. The unique thing about this place is that the new range of indulgent hair treatments combines exotic natural extracts with active agents to transform hair into silken, luscious locks. The treatments are based on hair care potions from Schwarzkopf. I found that each treatment is customised as per your hair’s special needs. As the smiling receptionist greeted me, if found the soft music and soothing décor of the place very calming. My treatment started with a scalp and hair test. It was here that my illusions about my hair and scalp were dispelled. What I thought was a dry limp hair issue turned out to be a more complicated oily scalp, dry strand problem. But my hair therapist assured me that it was one of the most common hair issues amongst us Indian girls. Assured, I let him take charge of my strands. He suggested the Blue Lotus Caresse treatment, which is instant re-hydration for dry hair.

Blue Lotus extracts and Aquolol bathe hydrate locks with rich, lavish moisture and restore the natural moisture content. The treatment started with a shampoo from Schwarzkopf to re-hydrate my dry tresses. Then the therapist massaged Blue Lotus extracts and Aqualol bathe to my scalp and strands for further deep conditioning. To allow the cuticles to absorb the moisture, steam was applied to my hair. While the steam was doing its work on my strands, a massage specialist gave me a soothing hands and feet reflexology treatment. I was pleasantly surprised. After about half an hour of steaming, my hair and scalp was rinsed. Post blow drying and setting, I simply couldn’t stop staring and feeling my silken strands.

Why we recommend: Because of the instant

result we felt in our hair. The whole process was utterly soothing, and scalp felt totally nourished. The other plus point is the relaxing reflexology that comes complementary with the service. A holistic way to calm frayed nerves and bad hair. Contact: Lakme Beauty Studio, GK- Part 2, Delhi. Price: Rs. 1800 Who Tried: Nabanita Das

Scrub a

Body exfoliation and toning treatment at BodyScape

What with valentines just round the corner, a girl’s got to be ready with a glowing skin and what not. And it’s not just the face, a bit of sloughing and smoothing is a must for the body too especially, when the plan is to wear a nice dress with plunging back and neckline. With this plan in my mind, I sought out the body treatments at BodyScape Spa. I was looking some scrubbing and polishing to take off the layer of dead skin that seemed to have built up dulling my skin during the cooler months. The executive at the spa recommended I try the body polishing treatment that will not only exfoliate the top layer of dead skin but will also tone my skin with a firming, hydrating pack. So off I went with the therapist, who put me in a sauna to open my pores, steam out the toxins, and loosen the dead skin cells. After that, in the therapy room she started by applying a scrub made of crushed almond on my body – section by section. After massaging the scrub into my skin, she took a loofah and exfoliated my body, and limbs using string circular motion – meant to not just take off the dead skin cells, but also improve blood circulation.

58

BEAUTY | M A R C H

2010

Post wiping off the scrub, she applied pack of mineral clay and cucumber – tone my skin and lighten dark patches – on my whole body excluding face. After about 15 minutes, I showered off the pack, and came out gleaming, and smooth. To retain the softness of the skin, the therapist massaged in a light moisturising lotion all over the body. As I dressed to go out, I felt it a pity that I had to hide my lovely, super soft skin.

Why we recommend: This treatment

removes the dead skin cells from the outer most surface and makes the skin look and feel softer and brighter. Using a body scrub exfoliates your skin, leaving it feeling, softer and smoother and generally healthier looking but it also helps fight cellulite and improve skin tone because the body scrub improves the circulation of blood and lymphatic drainage. The following body pack was an excellent way to detoxify and add minerals to your body, leaving you re-energized and rejuvenated. Place: Bodyscape Spa, The Resort, Malad, Mumbai. Pampering Bali

Buah Buahan Facial with Aloe vera and Lemongrass pedicure at Ahvataras The Spa.

The first time I tried the beauty treatment at a spa in Bangkok during a vacation, I was bowled over by the touch and feel of the whole ritual. I was impressed by the long lasting effect of the treatments. I had been searching for similar experience, and now search is over. I found it in Ahvataras The Spa – a comparatively small set up but the quality of service and ambience is as good as any. As I climbed to the first floor to the spa I was greeted by a large stone Ganesha and then a beautiful Buddha – the neatness of the place struck me. The reception was albeit small, but I could peek into very well done up rooms and feel the sense of serenity. There was no hub-bub usual in a salon. The smiling therapists quietly proffer water and herbal tea as you wait for your turn to get your skin examined. The décor is totally Bali and Thai inspired with lot of dark wood furniture, accessories and soothing Balinese music to evoke the ambience of the region. Since my skin was feeling parched due to the hot Bangalore sun, I decided to go for the Buah Buahan facial that was done with fruit infusion, and aloe vera. Prior to that though the therapist offered me a soothing Lemongrass infusion pedicure. Hygiene was a major plus in the spa - water for the pedicure was brought in a beautiful wooden bowl infused with rose petals. It was soothingly lukewarm and had a mild aroma. A coconut scrub was used on my feet and legs to slough away pigmentation and rough skin. Then a lemongrass infused

aroma oil was massaged using special Balinese technique. Then a chocolate mask was applied and my feet were wrapped in foil for the mask to work into my skin. Once my feet and legs were washed with cool aromatic water, I was amazed at the transformation. They not only felt soft but also had a lighter skin tone. Post pedicure I was taken to facial area where I was given a pretty sarong to drape myself in. From then it was utter bliss, as my therapist started the treatment with a gentle head massage. She cleansed my face with softest of touch, and then applied aroma oil, rice based scrub using gentle massage technique – lightest of pressure at all the nerve and lymph points on the face, neck and shoulders. The facial ended after about an hour with a gentle back massage. I knew I had found Bali in my corner of India.

Why we recommend: Simply for the technique of

massage. There’s no tugging, no pulling the skin, yet you come out glowing. The oils and masks for the facial are mixed as the treatment starts, and they are all highly customised. All ingredients are sourced from Bali, and Singapore. The treatments are offered at an excellent price point.

my beauty moment

Scent Of Self

Budding actressYuvika Chowdhary is quite a looker with near perfect skin, pliant pout, and almond shaped eyes. But for her a fragrance enhances a person’s looks and presence more than any makeup can. Budding actress Yuvika Chowdhary is quite a looker with near perfect skin, pliant pout, and almond shaped eyes. But for her a fragrance enhances a person’s looks and presence more than any makeup can. I do like makeup, and especially doing up my eyes with kohl, but that does not define beautiful to me. I am one of those who believe that a person’s beauty shows from within. What you feel inside shows on your face – your expressions can actually make or mar your looks no matter how good or bad your features are. If you are happy, and have good thoughts, they will show on your face, and you will look beautiful naturally. For me a part of being beautiful is the fragrance you use. It is the final touch to dressing up. But it is not just about smelling good; a good perfume for me is something that hints at your personality, reflects the kind of person you are. I am very careful when choosing my scent. I like to smell good, and try to create my signature scent. However this does not mean that I stick to one

perfume all the time. Actually how I feel at certain time has a lot to do with the kind of fragrance I am wearing. My scent changes according to my mood, makeup, and clothes. I do have a collection of fragrances – often gifts and some are my own purchases. While I am loyal to a particular type of fragrance, I do not stick to one brand all the time. I love collecting perfumes, so my fragrances might have similar characteristics but they are never from the same brand. For me a fragrance has to evoke a sense of freshness, and happiness. It should leave me feeling refreshed even after a tiring day. I was quite addicted to Energizing Fragrance from Shiseido. I really felt happy every time I spritz it on me. Now I have discovered Miracle by Lancôme. It is a classic scent but has a soothing effect on me. Again the key for me was the sense of freshness and lightness that Miracle evoked for me. It also made me feel sophisticated, and definitely happy. For the moment I feel that buying Miracle has been a sound beauty investment for me.

Spring Blooms

Spring fashion is not complete till you see few sprays of flowers on clothes, and accessories. This year the poppies and the pansies are bright and in 3D.

Florals are back again. This time not just on clothes but on accessories as well. Flowers like poppies, carnations, wild rose, and tulip are the ones to wear this season. A chunky neckpiece or a bracelet is the easiest way to go floral. Tote a clutch with bold silk flowers. Or go subtle thin belt adorned with a rose or carnation. For ultra romantic touch tie a floral head band around your up do.

Burst Of Colour

While winter clothing was full of neutral shades that seemed to reflect the economic down turn, spring lines are showing an optimistic palette. By

Nabanita Das Officially you can wear bright colours again as we welcome spring. After the sombre shades of winter, you can now invest in bright colours – red, aqua, purple, yellow, orange. Even the neutrals are bright like sienna, or blond tobacco. The hues catch a more young and upbeat tone. So how do you wear them? According to designer Sanchita Ajampur, colour blocking is the trendiest way to wear the brights now. “Striking colour blocking is very in now. Colour blocking by mixing a fondant of colour or of vibrant shades such as fuchsia top and turquoise bottoms or orange top with purple bottoms is interesting and very trendy way to wear the colours,” she adds. Designer Ayesha Depala says that usual spring hues like white, beige and nudes will continue to be popular. Other colours like grey, khaki, and military green will also be seen on dresses. They might even have metallic sheen to them. However Ajjampur feels that fashion trends in India is different and show very little change season to season, since we do not have such variations in temperature. In fact changing from season to season is not so relevant here since most of India has warm tropical weather. So bright colours remain part of very woman’s wardrobe season after season.

Spring silhouettes

It is all about effortless chic, and flowing drapes, and wild prints. “The lines and shapes for spring are clean and feminine, lots of short hemlines, less fussy and overwhelming shapes,” explains Depala. With equality of the genders being the theme this year, it is not surprising to see designers creating garments with typical male embellishments. So you have boyfriend shirts, boxy blazers, and strong shoulders of the 80’s. “The silhouettes are relaxed with masculine overtones. The pants are like the dhoti pants, and jodhpurs, the shapes are more relaxed,” says Ajjampur. In

62

fact patterned pants with unusual prints will work very well. Then there are the glamorous maxi dresses, in prints, or in mixed fabrics of jersey and chiffon; printed sleeveless dresses that morph into tunics when worn over trousers; and easy A-line 60’s shifts, dynamic Grecian drapery, asymmetric off the one shoulder styles, with reinvented folds, pleats and ornamental details that will help you make ultra feminine, romantic statement.

Accessorise

Accessories dress up an outfit and make a world of difference to your look. “Oversized printed canvas bags for the beach, handcrafted bags and travel totes

in woven leather, velvet and canvas will be popular. Classic clutch bags that are embroidered or bejewelled bags with glinting rocks or subtle hand cut petals cascading all over will be important for dressy occasions. “Supple leather ballerinas, and flips flops; big bold costume jewellery, huge chain necklaces with texture and scale contrasts, big textural rings, stacked bangles - thin or thick cuffs; necklaces with tie ribbon closures; flowers in 3D forms on accessories for dress necklines, waistlines and as hair adornment will be important to accentuate your style ” says Ajjampur. You could wear the simplest of cloths and look like a million bucks with

such accessories. All it takes is a little planning. “Bold and chunky statement pieces are still strong for spring. These work best with an underplayed outfit, in a block colour. Chains, studs, chain mail are still carried forward as a trend from autumn winter 2009,” says Depala.

On My

MIND

Being a woman rocks! Especially when you get to play with all those skin, hair, and makeup lovelies. I have always found that i can really cheer me up even in the most depressing of moments by dabbing a bit of gloss and sweeping some bright hued eye shadow. Playing dress up with bright colours even when I have nowhere to go is simply therapy. It is such a pleasure to watch the light catch the shimmer blush on my cheek; creamy red pout. I refute those who say spending on makeup is vanity – the therapeutic value, the calming experience make up for the money spent. Funnily, the same nay-sayers – those who scrunch their nose at makeup with “Another new shade; what the difference?” - will let a smile of vanity hover on their lips as they check out ‘another new shade’ on their lips, or eyes or cheeks. In all this i love to play the devil, lightly insinuating the need for a blue or green eye liner even when they are no-liner girls. But then a sweep for trial and they are hooked. Makeup has that effect on you. So do nice skin creams and styling products. Just the feel of the texture between finger, a little taste and it can pull you in like an Agatha Christie novel. Today, we have so many options, we hardly ever think back to the time when a generation ago not many women could indulge themselves thus. Now you can walk into a spa or salon or a beauty store and demand any skin or hair therapy or product you like, but earlier generation was not so lucky. This became apparent when i started compiling our Women’s Day Special story featuring all the veterans of our beauty industry. These women have made a difference to the way we

groom, and beautify ourselves today. When they entered with what seemed new fangled ideas, very few really imagined that their ideas would be successful. It was interesting to note that most of them started on the path

of beauty as a hobby, which turned into passion later in life. For most of our big beauty ladies the entry was more as a need to do something with their time. However, they managed to change the perspective of grooming and beauty in India as they developed products, and introduced treatments, services, spas and salons to pull us regular women out of beauty no-zone. They gave a new meaning to dressing up, caring for your skin and hair, putting on makeup. Because of what they worked for years earlier, today we can be at our groomed best ready to take on any challenge thrown our way.
