Don’t

Do

Smother your lips with high shine gloss to make your pucker more prominent. A moisturising lip gloss not only hydrates dry lips, but also plumps up the skin making the lips appear fuller. To create fuller lips first fill them up with a lip liner in a neutral shade and then apply a lip gloss like The Body Shop Love Gloss, Rs 695. It comes with a special heart shaped applicator that makes contouring easy giving intense colour to your lips. It is enriched with beeswax, cocoa butter, marula oil and passion fruit oil, making it a sweet lickable goody.

&

Do’s Don’ts

Let dead skin cells build up and dull your complexion. Rescue your skin by exfoliating it twice a week with good face scrub. For basic cleansing and improving oxygenation to the skin try Deborah Bioetyc Clean Skin Exfoliant, Rs 500, with natural extracts to improve skin’s elasticity. For lightening and brightening your complexion pick Forest Essentials Facial Ubtan, Rs 850 with orange peel and Nagkesar extracts. Regular usage will even out your skin tone. For deep cleansing your pores, and purify your skin try the VLCC Skin Defense Rose Face Scrub, Rs 125. Aloevera and rose extracts cleanse and calm the skin, while finely crushed walnut shells remove dead skin cells, superficial black heads giving the skin a satin finish.

Do

Free your hair of all the styling weight, which can dull hair’s natural shine. Detox your hair and scalp once a week with mild shampoo and conditioner, and let it breathe. Pick a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner like TIGI Rockaholic Living The Dream Shampoo, Rs 900, and Daily Conditioner, Rs 1,000. The range is sulphate free and has a blend of green tea, goji berry, gotu kola, and minerals. The blend of natural extracts in the products help prevent free radical damage, detoxify, provide UV protection, and fix lifeless and stressed out hair.

Don’t

Forget that your eye makeup is incomplete without two coats of mascara. Voluminous lashes add intensity to your gaze and add sensuality to your whole look. So you need a mascara that will glide smoothly through your lashes coating it with colour without clumping. You need Lancôme Hypnôse Drama, Rs 1,550 – the latest interpretation of the brand’s iconic Hypnôse mascara. It gives a high volume lash look, and its black ink formula can be worked and reworked as desired. It has a high wax concentration that coats the lashes without clumping. The key to getting the high volume lashes is the unique design of its mascara brush – a convex twist in an ‘S’ with a combination of short and long bristles that open the eyes and lashes leaving colour even on the shortest of lashes.

beauty Solution

We got veteran beauty expert Shahnaz Husain to solve skin and hair problems of these five women. by Nabanita Das

Solution

Kiran Chopra, painter and poet, 55 I have a sensitive skin. When exposed to sunlight I get pink rashes. Also when the weather changes I get these rashes on my face; added to that I have fine lines on my face and crow’s feet. My dermatologist recommended that I use a sunscreen with high SPF – 60 is the advice. But it is often tough to find such sunscreens here, so it would be great if you can give some added information on how to treat my skin.

Your dermatologist has recommended a sunscreen with high SPF since your skin is extremely sensitive to sun exposure. The sunscreen should be applied about 20 minutes before sun exposure. Carry your sunscreen and re-apply it if you are out in the sun for long. This red rash condition may be actinic dermatitis, for which your doctor may prescribe medication for relief. The main treatment is actual physical protection with the use of sunscreens. You should avoid soap and use a cleansing cream or gel, preferably one containing aloe vera. You can also try mild glycerine soap. After cleansing, apply a light moisturizing lotion. Wait for a few minutes and then apply the sunscreen. This may help to avoid moisture depletion. At night, after cleansing, apply a nourishing cream and massage it on the face with a

Rekha Das, home maker, 50 I have normal skin. I have no other problems in my skin except dark circles which are very intense and prominent. I have used many different under eye products, but the results have not been very successful. The circles lighten minimally and get dark again after a while. Please suggest a few home remedies that can make the circles less visible and diminish completely.

Solution Some of the reasons for the formation of dark circles around eyes are hereditary factors, nutritional deficiencies, stress, inadequate sleep,

few drops of water, using outward and slightly upward strokes. Massage lightly around eyes, using the ring finger, in one direction only. I recommend a light seaweed mask for the area around eyes. It would help the minimize line and crow’s feet around eyes. A weekly professional facial would help to improve the skin’s moisture retention ability. It should include facial massage and care of the area around eyes.

sun-sensitivity, etc. So, along with external care, you should check these aspects. As a home remedy, you can daily apply pure almond oil sparingly. Leave on for 15 minutes and wipe off gently with moist cotton wool. You can also mix cucumber juice and potato juice in equal quantities. Apply under eyes daily for 20 minutes. Wash off with water. Before going out in the sun, apply a sunscreen lotion sparingly under the eyes. Add a drop of water to it before applying, to give a lighter coverage. Seek a doctor’s help in supplementing your diet with the right vitamins and mineral supplements.

Pompi, student, 22 I love to use hair relaxers, and go for lot of heat styling when doing up my hair. And my hair is very dry, so I often face hair loss due to breakage, and feel that my hair is badly damaged. Can you please suggest some gentle cure?

Solution Repeated use of straightening lotions and direct heat applications really weaken the hair. It not only dries out the strands, but causes severe breakage and loss. Hot oil therapy and conditioning will help. Twice a week heat pure coconut oil and apply on the scalp and hair. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hot towel around the

Madhumita Kayshep, student, 20 I have dry hair, and suffer from dandruff especially during the cooler months when my scalp gets dry, and itchy. I use henna once in two weeks and oil my hair once a week. But the problem still persists. Please tell me what I can do to get rid of dandruff and dry hair.

Solution Avoid using very hot water for washing the hair and use less shampoo when washing your hair, as these can dry out the scalp and produce more dandruff flakes. Apply herbal hair tonic on the scalp daily at night, using cotton wool

head, like a turban. Keep it on for 5 minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap 3 or 4 times. This helps the hair and scalp absorb the oil better. Use a mild herbal shampoo. Use less shampoo and rinse well with water. After shampoo, apply a creamy conditioner, taking less quantity and massaging it lightly into the hair. Leave on for 2 minutes and rinse off with plain water. After towelling dry your hair, apply a leave-on conditioner or hair serum to the strands. Once a week, have a deep conditioning treatment. Mix together one egg, two tablespoons castor oil, the juice of a lemon and one teaspoon pure glycerine. Massage this into the hair and scalp. Wash your hair after half an hour.

and leave it on. Wash your hair with a mild herbal shampoo three times a week, using less shampoo and rinsing very well with water. Half an hour before shampoo, apply two tablespoons vinegar on the scalp, massaging it lightly into the scalp. Once a week, heat olive oil or sesame oil and apply on the scalp at night. Leave on overnight. Next morning, apply the juice of a lemon half an hour before shampoo. Weekly henna treatments do help. Include fresh fruits, raw salads, sprouts and yogurt in your daily diet. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. Add the juice of a lemon to a glass of water and have it first thing in the morning.

Lipika Das, teacher, 48 I have black spots all over my face; I have shown them too many doctors and even sought homeopathy help. When I apply the medicines the spots get a little lighter, but they come back again after sometime. Over the years these spots have increased in number. Give me a solution to get rid of this problem.

Solution The brown spots are caused by sun damage, so you should apply a sunscreen with high SPF of 40 before going out in the sun. If you stay out in the sun for long durations, re-apply the sunscreen. Actual physical protection from the sun is the only answer. This can be done by applying sunscreens

and carrying an umbrella in the sun. Try to avoid excessive sun exposure. Mix rice powder with curd and use as a facial scrub once or twice a week. Apply on the face rub gently on the skin with tiny circular movements. Leave on for a few minutes and then wash off with water. Mix honey and lemon juice in equal quantities and apply daily on the face. Wash it off after 15 minutes with plain water. Or, take two teaspoons curd, add a pinch of turmeric and apply the same way. Twice a week, apply this face mask. Mix two teaspoons wheat bran (choker) with one teaspoon each of ground almonds, honey, curd and lemon juice, or egg white. Apply on the entire face, avoiding the lips and area around eyes. Wash it off after half an hour.

Prachi

De s a i

beauty’s FACE

Prachi Desai does not need foundation or a blush to glow. She just has to smile a while. Prachi talks about her experiments with beauty. I will try not to give a clichéd answer that looking good is about the person that you are. But definitely the person that you are reflects on your face. Some people look very sweet; some look very harsh; maybe it’s because of experiences in their lives. Well those you find good looking are mostly the people who take care of themselves. The glow on your skin depends on how well you treat it, how many natural things you put on it or take in. I rather believe in being healthy from the inside. If you speak to the actors today, they will tell you that they were fooling around during college. They never took care of themselves. Even I was that way. But after becoming an actress I have learnt to take care of myself. In the morning the first thing I get up and have coconut water. I have to have it. I don’t feel good without that. Fruits like orange give me skin allergy. I get big bumps like mosquito bites. So I avoid them. I only discovered this later. But now I take care. In Bombay, due to the hectic schedule, I can’t go and exercise very often. I tried various things but I give up after a while. So now I think walking helps me the best. I walk for ½ an hour to 1 hour every day. Now I don’t believe in experimenting too much with my skin. That way you avoid putting on things that can harm you in the long run. So I believe in loads of are home skin and hair care recipes. My one indulgence is the lovely skin care products from Neutrogena. Well, I might be endorsing the brand now, but I have been using various products from the brand for a long time now. Earlier I had to depend on my relative abroad to send me

Neutrogena stuff, but now I can get them here, so that way it’s become easier to use. I did experiment with other products but then settled for Neutrogena as it suited my skin the best.

Makeup just gets too much After years of getting my face made up, now I sort of shy away from all that gunk. I am actually tired of putting on layers on my skin every day. It’s a tiring job – we have sit for 1 to 1 ½ hours to get the makeup and hair done. I get really irritable sometimes, and now find it boring. But then we have to do it for the sake of our job. When I am on my own, I avoid makeup. If I am going out, a smear of lipgloss, and some kajal are all I wear. That’s because I tend to get lazy about removing all of it. But then removing makeup is important as it can damage your skin. Now-a-days I am bit obsessed about what I put on it. First of all I am a stickler for drinking loads of water throughout the day. My body actually craves it. Secondly I never wear makeup without moisturising my skin, and putting a primer on. That lets my skin breathe, and makeup doesn’t settle into the pores. Also I use water based makeup, which is lighter on the skin. And now I also use a night cream to make my skin more supple in the morning.

Love hair remedies I hated applying oil and would run off while in school. I never wanted to go to school with oiled hair. But, now I realize that when every day my hair goes through styling, blow drying, ironing, curling how important it is to keep the strands healthy and well

moisturised. Basically, everyday your hair is going through some heat. Also for normal working people the pollution in Bombay is very bad. I use Marico’s Shanti Badam Amla hair oil. Apart from endorsing it, I use the oil for my hair on a regular basis. I simply love the hair potion that my mother makes at home and put on my scalp and strands. I put a mixture of lemon, curd, egg every once in a while to strengthen the strands. Sometimes in hot oil she mixes a few things, like neem leaves, which actually cures many scalp problem. Other than this I don’t try anything else. I do go for protein treatments in salons. I call it the ritual, but I am not regular with it.

Relax at home I don’t relax in the conventional sense. But I do take time off and spend a whole day being lazy at home. Of course there is always something that you have to do. There might be something to get or there could be a meeting to attend. Once that is over I just am at home. I meet up with friends. I think that’s the best way. Earlier I used to just like to go to spas and spending time there. But right now my mode is rather lazy. I like being at home and watching a movie. I watch English television series. Basically I do what I don’t get to do regularly. I like to destress at a spa though, one in a while. I like massages, foot reflexology, hot stone massage, and gentle head massages. I do like the idea of the traditional India champi but I dare not try it. I am afraid that my head will fall off while it is being done!

Secret Smell of

Am

A spritz of potent molecules is all you need to make your presence felt as it triggers powerful response in the brain – compelling and attractive. By Priyanka Bhattacharya

When you think of what a perfume is? It seems surprising that combination of invisible molecules can work on your skin and its oil to create unusual olfactory sensations. But that is what it is. Perfumes are a complex combination of molecules that not only tease our sense of smell but create an imprint in the brain that evoke powerful memories. We remember moments of love, moments of confidence, moments of warmth in relation to the fragrance surrounding the event. So you will always find yourself wearing a specific fragrance that you may have worn when meeting your significant someone, years afterwards to evoke that special memory and the moment. Defining the characteristics

of a perfume author, and fragrance chemist Luca Turin writes in book Secret of Scent : Adventures in Perfume and Science of Smell, “Perfumes are a complex mixtures of what the people in the industry call ‘raw materials’. The raw materials can either be extracts from natural sources (mixture of molecules) or synthetic raw materials (usually single molecules). Mixtures both natural and synthetic are often beautiful, whether they be designed by evolution to attract bees, or by us to attract each other...The study of smell requires one to exit the realm of beautiful to descend into what German philosophers used to call the Sublime, and come face to face with the enduring strangeness of raw sensation.”

Romance and scent

Fragrance plays a major role in almost every love story. It is the first and the last thing you work on when preparing for the kill. So you have to decide what kind of impact you want to make on your significant other. You may not realise it but your fragrance can give out a subtle message that is louder than any gesture you can make. When selecting a fragrance, think about the effect it might have on you and your significant other - evoke the sweet romantic in you or the sensual temptress. “Perfumes do for humans, what pheromones do for animals, they attract the opposite sex,” says Sonali Vengurlekar, Spokesperson, Versace and Moschino Fragrance in India. Flowers have a strong connection with romance and love. They evoke sweet sensuality. In the olden days pure floral essentials defined a romantic fragrance. But now cloying scents are passé. The modern interpretation is far from overtly sweet. Yes, the romantic fragrance is still soft, feminine and floral but with a hint of green freshness, and lightness. A truly sensual fragrance doesn’t just enhance your sexuality but also defines it. With the right blend you can go from coy to seductive in a spritz. Mouth watering desserts like berries, chocolate, crème brulee and caramel evoke sensuality but offset their sweetness with a hint of musk, amber, cucumber or aquatic element.

Notes of love

“Considering your partner’s choice is very important when choosing a romantic or a sensual fragrance. Usually men are more attracted to perfumes with a stronger floral note such as oriental perfumes, which always combine ingredients like vanilla and sandalwood with floral notes. This adds warmth and sensuality to the fragrance. However this kind is good for an evening out. For a daytime

rendezvous, a fresh floral works better,” explains Vengurlekar Classic floral notes like peony, rose, jasmine are quintessentially romantic, but alone they can smell powdery and old fashioned. For a touch of modernity look for a blend with grass, vetiver, cassis, citrus, or violet. When choosing a sensual scent heady floral notes like Casablanca, lilies, and tuberose have intoxicating aromas that are

almost carnal in their intensity. This when combined with sultry elements of musk, wood, leather enhance the warmth that the fragrance is meant to evoke. “Oriental notes with warm ingredients like vanilla or chocolate combined flowers like ylang ylang , rose or lilies increase the intensity of the fragrance. Sandalwood combined with animal ingredients also adds depth to the fragrance, which evokes sensuality in the wearer,” she informs.

Maximise Your Notes • Choose a floral like rose blended with vetiver or violet for neo romantic touch. • Look for a blend of lilies or tuberose with musk or wood for warm sensual scent. • your scent on moisturised and slightly damp skin. • Layer your fragrance by using body wash, and body lotion from the same range or having similar notes. • Use two versions of the same fragrance to suit the intensity you want. For daytime wear the EDT or Deodorant version, while for the night choose the Parfum. • Since fragrance rises start by spraying on the ankle and behind the knee, and then going to the breastbone, neck, and behind the ears, and temple.

Art of seduction

An intimate moment will forever be linked to the scent you’re wearing, so choose wisely, and never borrow your mother’s perfume. “A fragrance that evokes feeling of sensuality and warmth defines a romantic fragrance. When you see your partner can’t seem to get enough of you, he never leaves your side or wants to cuddle up with you, you should know that you’ve made the right decision in choosing the perfume,” adds Vengurlekar. Part of being seductive is to appear unavailable. There should be a mysterious element to your fragrance that isn’t immediately recognisable. In fact simple fruity scents can be too obvious. Always wear a fragrance that evolves into a complex deep note after it settles on your skin. So how do you wear your romantic or sensual perfume? “Wear it on well moisturised skin. Ensure that your skin is slightly damp to assimilate the molecules of the fragrance into your pores. Layer it by using the body lotion from the same line as the fragrance. It also increases the impact. Most lines also

offer shower gels, when these 3 are combined and layered, the impact is greater,” Vengurlekar says. For a subtler effect mist the air with your scent and step into it so that the scent envelops you. You can even spray it at the back of your neck and leave your hair loose, and your scent will waft across as you come nearer to the person. For the evening dab the fragrance on all your pulse points – neck, nape, across the shoulders, behind the ears, cleavage, wrist, and behind the knee. “Wearing perfume lower on the body like back of the knee and ankles works better as perfume always rises and envelops the body,” she explains. A sensual woman wears fragrance from head to toe. To avoid going overboard, use a parfum or eau de toilette to highlight specific areas like the décolletage and back of the knees, and a lighter body mist elsewhere. Whichever version of the love potion you spritz on yourself – rather dot it on the breastbone, neck, and wrist – your impact will be maximum when you wear it with a certain degree of savoir faire.

BanishWrinkles

There’s a new product in town that mimics skin’s natural mechanism to fight skin’s aging process and leave it supple. Try BOXTLAK-BL Cream Wrinkle is a furrow in the skin and is a natural process developed during aging. Premature wrinkles may be caused by deficiency of nutritional components in the different tissues, cellular destruction through excessive sun exposure, the effect of free radicals on the cellular membrane, and deterioration in the genetic programming of the DNA. All this brings about the atrophy of the skin and consequently a general process of degeneration. Ageing skin results from the passage of time, overexposure to the sun that destroys cellular ability to reproduce, lack of proper care while young, health problems and hormonal imbalances. When we express our emotions by smiling, frowning, squinting, our muscles contract thousands of time everyday. These movements exert tension forces to the dermis and results in formation of wrinkles around the mouth, forehead and eyes. One of the most striking signs of skin ageing is the increased wrinkling of the face, neck and the area around the eyes. Wrinkles form due to the effect of constant pull of gravity over time, environmental damage and continued facial expressions.

Now there is a new solution to this premature aging, and photo damage to skin. Shalaks Pharmaceuticals has recently introduced its cosmo-derma product to address this problem. It has developed an anti-aging cream Boxtlak-BL, which promises Botulinum Toxin A like results with regular use. What makes this cream unique is that the peptides mimic the skin’s natural defense mechanism. According to the company the cream stands out from the rest because of the combinations of ingredients that make it effective.

In Soft Focus

A subtly glowing face with one highlighted feature in a gentle wash of colour describes romantic makeup right now. by Priyanka

It is minimal but not muted; it is almost pale but iridescent; it is bright but not loud – the makeup evokes a feeling of sensuality with a hint of sweetness. “When defining romantic look, I would say less is more. It is minimalistic with one highlighted feature on your face. Soft, subtle, and iridescent. You should define the best feature on your face,” says Stafford Braganza, Head Makeup Artist, Lancôme India.

The key to the neo romantic look of the season is to follow the basic tenets of makeup with a twist. So you go smoky-eyed with burgundy or brown instead of black, use a soft pink gloss instead of pale nude lips. Bright lips with brown, brick, red, coral, pink, burgundy and fuchsia is to be paired with softly gold glazed eyes or flicked out liner and full body lashes.

SKIN So you start by prepping your skin. Well hydrated skin that appears supple is the first step to getting this look. Besides the cleansing, toning, and moisturising your skin, makeup expert, and head trainer, Pivot Point India, Samantha Kochhar advices that you take care of the area around the eyes with a toning, and soothing gel; “this will help the eye makeup go on smoothly without creasing, and give a soft tint of colour,” she adds. Show as much of your skin as possible – don’t cover it up with layers of foundation that is. “I prefer to use tinted moisturiser instead of a full coverage foundation to get the soft dewy skin. It evens out the tone without hiding the complexion. If you have blemishes then hide the areas with a concealer, and then apply a light foundation,” explains Braganza.

EYES Smoky eyes with charcoal black or ash grey are a strict no-no when trying out the soft sensual look. But eyes with some depth do add to the sense of mystery, and sexuality. But it cannot be overt. Burgundy, brown, coral, gold, rust gold, copper, dark purple all work well for adding intensity to your gaze. “You play with three complementing colours. Start by applying the darkest hue to the crease of your lid and blend out to in. Then use the mid tone on the centre of your and blend well with darker hue to get a seamless finish. Finally apply the lightest hue on your brow bone to highlight eyes shape. Then take kohl and rim the upper and lower lash line. Smudge a bit of the dark hue on your lower lash line,” Braganza explains. One warning though

– while a shimmer shade look good, avoid glitter on your lids at any cost. This look should accompany pale lips. “At YSL we use a very unusual trick – first rim your lash lines using a liner in an interesting colour say burgundy, wine, charcoal grey, and then apply a complementing shadow on the lid; smudge and blend well,” informs Charmaine Rao, Makeup artist, YSL India. If you prefer to go with deeper hued lips then give your lids a soft wash of pastel hues like beige, muted gold, soft pink or coral, and use a liquid liner to get winged tip line close to your lash line.

CHEEKS No sculpted cheekbones here please. Just delicate swab of blush on the apple of your cheeks. Light peach, soft pink, bright coral with a hint of shimmer are good colour choices. “I recommend shimmer rather than matte blushes because shimmer brings a healthy glow to the skin, says Braganza. The pearly particles in the shimmer blush diffuse light thus hiding flaws well. If you have a darker skin tone with yellow undertone then opt for burgundy or deep coral hues, and apply with a light hand. Fairer girls will look great in shades of pink. You can also try a basic highlighter instead of any colour to give the skin a dewy finish.

LIPS Your pout has to be glossy, or creamy. Pick creamy textured lip colour to add volume to your lips, and make it hydrated for a supple, full lipped look. A soft pink or rose gloss or tinted balm give your lips a natural feel yet make it appear voluptuous. Instead of nude lip colour (it can wash out the complexion), apply a slightly tinted pink or coral gloss. “If you want to play up your pout, I suggest pick bright hues that have depth. Colours like burgundy, rich brown, red, coral and shades of pink are perfect for the romantic look. These bright hues can open up your complexion and add to

the mood of seduction,” says Braganza. “I find the classic red mouth very sensuous. Avoid drawing the mouth though; instead apply red lipstick with a brush keeping in your natural lip line as the guide. This should be complemented by softly blushing cheeks,” says makeup artist Renuka Pillai.

HAIR

Parted Waves

A straight part down the middle is too boring, zig-zag too stark; instead try curves and bends for a casual feel to seriously voluptuous hair.

To give your styled, cascading waves a softer, cooler tone, push back the hair, and then divide the hair using your fingers and let strands fall across slightly randomly to get a messy part.

Dye Defined

The ads say at home colours give great hair, but hair pros frown at the mention DIY dye. So we checked with hair colour experts to find out what’s the middle ground really. by Gayatri

You heard Aishwarya Rai talk about how the popular hair colour brand has helped her hide grey and give soft and silky hair, and you pick up a pack and give your tresses a rich brown tint. You are happy till your visit to stylist for a trim. That’s when it starts – the torment, the guilt. The stylist snickers and comments on how hair texture is all bad and the colour too flat, and the quality so rough. That’s when he asks the dreaded question; which colour have you used. You guiltily mention the at-home use brand, and

he shakes his head ruefully saying slowly that you have ruined your hair. You are embarrassed, but confused too. You didn’t mind your handiwork with the dyeing job, but also loved the subtle glint that your professional hair colourist brought out in your strands. So where do you stand? We spoke to the official colourists of brands like Wella, L’Oreal Professionnel, Schwarzkopf and even independent stylists and found the route to great tress tint.

Telling the difference: The basic difference

between at home hair colour and professional colour is the level to which the molecules penetrate the hair shaft. “In permanent hair colour, which is the professional version the colour molecules actually lift the cuticles, removes the natural pigment and deposits the pigment on the shaft, changing your natural colour forever. These colours do contain ammonia. But the effect remains for a longer time,” says Najeeb Ur Rehman, Colour expert and national technical Head, Schwarzkopf. On the other hand at-home colours are either demi-permanent or semi-permanent. Semipermanent which is also known as colour casting is totally ammonia-free, so deposits the pigment on top of the natural colour. It stays for about six to eight shampoos. Demipermanent on the

colour is far better than the one at home colour. The at home colour is made in such a way that an ordinary person can use it with ease,” she says. Besides the pigment, ammonia, peroxide, antioxidants, the modern colours also contain hair beautifying ingredients – essential oils, special conditioners etc. Says Rehman, “Pharcophenyl diamine makes the base colour, while ammonia and hydrogen peroxide help to swell the cuticles for colour deposition. Statinium chloride help in attaching the pigment to the shaft, while conditioning agents and hair softening essential oils from natural extracts help strengthen the strands and avoid weaking of the shafts which the chemicals can lead to.” Adding to this point Simi Dastidar, National Technical and

other hand has some level of ammonia and is mixed with a peroxide based activator to get a longer lasting impact. It does lift the cuticles but does not bleach out the natural pigment, instead depositing on top of that. Since there has been a technological advancement in manufacturing the colours, all have different uses and impact the hair in different manner. Depending on what you are looking for you can try one of the versions of hair colour.

Inside the colour: According to Asha Hariharan, Colour Ambassador, Wella India the basic composition of all versions of hair colour is very similar. “Both have colour pigment, antioxidant, a crème base and developer. Only difference is that the concentration level in the professional

Academy Manager, L’Oreal Professionnel says, “Composition of colours in both is more or less the same. The home products are designed for simple usage. In the salon however these compositions are manoeuvred as per the requirement or need and creativity of hairdresser.” As far as quality is concerned, Hariharan says that both the colours are safe, however the concentration of pigment in the packaged colour is different and lower than that of the professional versions. “So, they do not give the depth and versatility that a salon colour can give you. At home, the finishing may not be as good. In fact you might end up with uncoloured patches if you are not thorough. You have to be adept at applying the colour yourself,” she adds.

Dye at home

Coloured by a pro

Since the at-home colours are not as long lasting as a professional one, it makes a good entry point for the first time hair colour user who is looking to try out the hair colour experience. According to Hariharan, the good thing about the home colour is that you can do it at your own time, when you want it. “It gives you the time comfort. So if you are working long hours and you don’t have time to go to the salon, you can do a box colour at your own convenience. The other advantage is that if you have a strong gray hair, it will give you a temporary patch up solution. Temporarily your gray will not show distinctively. If your original hair colour is dark brown colour and you get a sudden gray patch, it looks unkempt and unprofessional. So at-home colour come handy in hiding gray hair,” she explains.

What defines the professional hair colour job is the level creativity and individualism you can add to your hair. The impact of the colour on your hair is totally different from what you can get from at-home colour. You can build up tone-on-tone. “In professional colour there is whole lot of creativity but in home colour it’s just a mix and instructions to be followed which are given by the manufacturer. Hence there is no creativity or a specific technique that exists. In professional colour there are specific techniques, various options – partial high lights, diverse colour technique, global colour etc. There are also various shades that can be mixed and matched as per skin tone and lifestyle,” explains Dastidar.

Besides, you can also use the colour to extend your professional dye job by using a similar shade at-home. It also avoids the colour fading. You can opt for a semipermanent colour like a casting to simply add sheen to your hair. Dastidar agrees that, home colour is simple, effective, and time saver for an individual, but has got its limitations in terms of techniques. First of all the colour you get may look flat, and appear darker than what you expect, which can clash with your complexion. “There could be a lot of chemical build up. New colour can overlap the previous colouring and cause a banding effect. This means colour over colour which makes it darker and darker than the target colour required,” adds Hariharan.

36

BEAUTY | F E B R U A R Y

2010

According to Rehman, with professional colour you can really play around with the intensity of the colour, and create looks that are very individual and specific to a person’s needs. Emphasising this point, Hariharan says that in professional colouring the advantage is that you can get a precise colour because the professional is able to apply exactly where it is needed and not overlap old colour. She also adds that if there is a colour change required it can be done mathematically and accurately because the professional knows the calculation, mixing the products at higher concentrations. Dastidar further adds, “Professional Colour is done by experts and it actually gives an individual various options and assistance in terms of shades, technique. It has a scientific and esthetical approach to a colour.”

colour, and give you a tint that might kill your complexion, or turn your hair yellow. In professional colouring service you can opt for various services. When colouring at home, mix the contents exactly as per the instruction given to get the most out of the shade. Keep it as long as mentioned in the pack, and ensure to wash and condition properly to get the shine back on your strands.

Tips for good colour Whether you opt for a professional colour or an athome option, always ensure to do an allergy test. In case of using professional service always inform the stylist if you have sensitive skin. Says Hariharan, “Do a patch test before trying any colour. Contraindication while applying the colours would be a recent scar tissue, like after surgery, any open gashes, wounds and hypersensitive scalp. Also people who have allergies and in certain cases of pregnancy people should be careful.”

With both professional colour and at-home job after care is a must. “Since any type of colour changes the hair texture, and lessens your hair’s elasticity, so you have to ensure put back lots of moisture and use the right shampoo and conditioner. Always opt for intensive conditioning treatment once a week or ten days to strengthen the strands,” suggests Rehman.

A good colour depends on the professional you choose, because a stylist can make or break your hair look. Look for highly trained person because a person who is not skilled can create a banding effect even with professional

Romancing the Locks

Special occasions call for special effort. With some spray, twist and curl transform your tresses from tepid to trés hot as you go along with this month’s amorous mood. by Ruby

Chakraborty.

Love is in the hair. It is as much a symbol of sensuality, as your low cut dress, or your softly shimmering lips. Well done hair can stir up your man’s senses even if you are dressed in a simple T and denims. Celebrate romance by playing up your hair – simply ditch your usual staid styling rules, and try these methods. The key to romantic hair is texture, volume, and a bit of mess. So freshly washed hair will not work. The strands become too silky to hold a style and you will need to use more products. To get the best results try these style on a hair that’s been washed a day before. Why it works? because the natural sebum on the scalp adds texture and hold to the strands, and they are better protected from heat.

the buns and finger comb you hair. You will get lovely natural looking waves. For the sensual variation, apply a volumising mousse to your towel dried hair and blow dry straight using a paddle brush. Part your hair on the side. Take a medium barrel curling rod and wrap

Waving and swishing

Soft waves cascading down the shoulders are a classic romantic hairdo. You can play with variations to suit your mood – from playfully, sexy to serious sensuality. To go the sexy way, ditch the curling iron and create random uneven twirls and waves. Spray your towel dried strands with a setting spray if they are thick or naturally wavy, or thickening spray if your hair is fine. Use blow dryer in medium setting and dry till your hair is slightly damp. Part your hair in three sections – one at the centre from crown to nape, and the other two over the ears. Take each section and twirl and wrap around to create buns and pin them. Then blast your whole head with the diffuser attached dryer in high setting for about 5 to seven minutes. Leave the buns for about 15 minutes till hair is completely dry. Take out

sections of your hair going from end till below your ears. Keep on for about few minutes. Create loose curls all around and then slightly loosen them with your fingers to frame your face. Finish off with a shine spray. If you like au naturel then just play up your hair texture. Dampen your hair and run a tiny drop of leave-in conditioner or an anti-frizz serum through hair. Part your hair in middle or on one side, slightly scrunch the strands with your hands, and tuck the hair behind your ears. Leave it to air dry. You’ll have soft, gentle wave in the front and at the ends.

Straight and swinging

Poker straight hair is strict and too sophisticated for the season. But straight strands that have a natural bounce is more like it. It is also great for girls with thick hair that refuse to hold curls. If you have medium to fine hair that’s straight or tends to be flyaway you can try this style with the help of a volumising mousse. If you have thick hair, then apply a heat protecting serum from mid-length to the ends. Blow dry your hair using a large round brush. When finished rub a drop of shine serum between your palms and skin them over your entire hair. Avoid getting the product at the roots as that can kill the natural bounce of your hair. Fine haired girls, start by applying root lifting and volumising mousse to damp hair. Then use a large barrel brush and blow dry hair starting at the root till the tip. Finish off by smoothing some anti frizz serum on the flyaway strands.

Choppy bangs and pulled back

Thick long fringe with uneven ends look appealing because of the peek-a-boo effect. The bangs should be cut such that the choppy ends skim your brows and some ends can even hide your eyes a bit. This kind of bang looks best with one length hair that falls below your shoulders. To style it, you can add loose waves and try the half up and half down style. Start by spritzing some texturising spray your roots at the crown and back of your head – make sure the roots are dry before using the spray. Use a large barrel tong and take haphazard sections of hair to create loose waves. Make it slightly messy by combing with your fingers. Take a section of your hair at the top of your head and tease it slightly. Then pull back just the top layer of your hair from each side of your face and the crown and fasten into a small, loose ponytail just below your crown. Take a drop of smoothing serum and rub between your palms and run lightly over the top to set the hair. Run your fingers through the length to add up to the texture.

Tied back and wrapped up

If you don’t like the idea of hair flowing around your face, you can make the plain old ponytail ot a staid bun work for you – get your sensuality quotient high. But instead of a smooth tail or a perfectly coiled bun, add some texture. Your fingers and some texturising spray are your best tools to get the look. And it’s a time saver too. You can pull it off in about two minutes.

Lightly mist your hair with a sea salt spray, and then gently massage your scalp with your fingers to create a bit of volume and unevenness. Scrape back your hair with your fingers and tie a ponytail on the middle of your head. And tease the tail with a tail comb. Finally take a dab of shine serum in your palm and gently smoothen over the top and the sides. For further oomph you can actually pull up the hair in a high bun. Prep your

hair as mentioned earlier. But instead of a mid-level ponytail, pull your hair up to the top nearly at the crown; tease the length with a tail comb to roughen up the hair. Then twist and roll in to a bun, and pin in place. You can even leave the ends sprouting for a casual effect. Finish by spraying some shine serum at the top.

Honey; it’s the better sugar

Though higher in calories, it’s the best sweetener as it speeds up fat-burning metabolism

A tablespoon of honey has 64 calories, while a tablespoon of sugar has 46 calories; but honey is still the better choice because the natural enzymes in it break sucrose into fructose, and glucose which are easier for the body to breakdown. Honey is rich in amino acids and antioxidants that protect the skin from inside.

Butt seriously

Ask most women what body part they’d most like to shape, and the answer often lies in the rear. Fitness expert Namita Jain gives her tips to sculpt your buns.

For most of us, our rears are the butt if all worries. They are too small, too big, too saggy, too flabby – just not right. But right diet and cardiovascular exercise can make a major difference to your backside. Here are some butt shaping tips to follow: Mission reduction

Losing body fat is a result of burning more calories than consumed. You need to exercise right and focus on eating right.

Eat to win

A healthy diet is an integral part of shaping-up. This doesn’t mean you have to starve yourself, but it does mean that you have to watch what you eat. Eating several meals a day keeps your metabolic rate up. Consume a diet that consists of proteins (20-percent), carbohydrates (65percent) and fats (15 percent). Eating right is winning half the battle of the bulge.

Include cardiovascular exercise Cardiovascular exercises burn calories. Incorporate cardiovascular exercises into your

schedule 5 to 6 days a week, for at least 30minutes per session. • •

The best butt shaping activities are stair climbing, cycling and walking up hill. You can set your elliptical trainer for a steeper incline as a challenging variation.

Vary your strength routine:

Include isolation (exercises that target only the gluteus) as well as compound exercises. Compound exercises, such as squats, leg presses, lunges, work more than one muscle group at a time and shape the lower body. Vary your exercises, intensity levels and change your exercise program periodically so that you use the muscles differently and keep yourself from getting bored.

If you are going to a social event take your own appropriate food with you. It is very tempting to throw your restrictions aside to be part of the crowd and fit in. Pack up your own little meal and take it with you. Yes, you may feel embarrassed at first, but over time you will become more comfortable. You could also try eating a healthy meal at home before going to the event so that you won’t be hungry and then you can just skip the eating aspect of the event and enjoy the other aspects. 2. If you are going to be away from home during meal times or snack times, pack up a little lunch in a small cooler and keep it with you. If hunger hits you when you are out and about it is very easy to give in to unhealthy temptations that you will pay for later. 3. Find alternatives to replace your restrictions. If you can’t eat wheat, then get products made with alternative grains. If you can’t eat chocolate, then try some tasty carob. If you can’t have sugar, use sugar alternatives. If you can’t have dairy, there are numerous delicious dairy alternatives that can satisfy your craving for ice cream or cheese. It is essential to find alternatives, so that you will not feel deprived. If you are feeling deprived you will be more likely to cheat. 4. Once-a-week reward yourself with something you aren’t usually allowed to have. For instance if sweets are forbidden then once a week allow yourself to have a healthy sweet. Something made with a healthy sweetener. Sugar is addictive because it is not a really a food. It is a chemical. The biochemical make up of sugar is almost identical to alcohol except for one molecule. Sugar weakens the immune system, depletes the adrenal glands, and depletes vitamin and mineral levels. You can break the sugar habit, but replacing it with things such as dates, bananas, raisins, maple syrup, barley malt, brown rice syrup, or stevia. These sweets are whole foods and will not damage the body. Another example would be if you are not allowed to eat wheat, then once a week allow yourself a meal of something made of wheat.

5. Exercise regularly, at least 3 times a week for 20 minutes. It not only burns off calories, but it improves immune function, and boosts self-esteem by stimulating our happy hormones. Exercise is essential. 6. Call a friend. If you can get a buddy system going this can very helpful. Call your friend during times of weakness and talk it out. Make arrangements with your friend ahead of time and have a plan of action. Have your friend remind you of your goals or how badly you will feel after you eat them. Have specific phrases for your friend to repeat back to you. 7. When cravings come, remind yourself that a craving usually only lasts a few minutes and it will be gone. Remind yourself that you will be able to have your reward on your specified day. Ride it out. After you ride it out a few times, it will become easier. 8. Reframe your thinking. For me it is simple to avoid unhealthy foods, because I simply do not desire to eat poison. I don’t want to do that to myself. So try to reframe your thinking about the foods that you desire. Try to think of them as “poisons” instead of “delicious forbidden treats.” 9. Don’t let emotions build up. Express yourself regularly. Keeping emotions pent up can cause you to eat unconsciously. Unexpressed feelings can also decrease selfesteem and if self-esteem is low you will be more likely to give in to cravings. 10. Forgive yourself. When you fall down and give in to your temptations don’t beat yourself up for it. Forgive yourself and let it go immediately. Just start over again. No harm down. To criticize will only be self-defeating. Don’t let the weak moment become a reason to stay off the restrictions for a longer period of time or to give up. Just pick yourself and begin again. Don’t think of it as failure, but rather as a minor setback. Change happens slowly and usually involves many setbacks. It is a process.

Lipstick Revealed

From plant pigments and crushed stones to special moisturising polymers, lip colours have come a long way By Ruby Chakraborty

Every time you want to brighten up your tired face, it is the lipstick or lipgloss you reach for. Experts say and we know that a sweep of bright tint on our lips does wonders to our looks. So what goes behind making this amazing bit of makeup? The use of lip colour was prevalent among the Sumerians, Egyptians, Syrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Greeks.

Lipstick is known to have been used around 5000 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia, when semi-precious jewels were crushed and applied to the lips and occasionally around the eyes. In fact excavations at Indus Valley Civilization show women’s vanity cases with little pots of pigments that were used to add colour to their faces. Women in the ancient Indus Valley Civilization applied lipstick to their lips for face decoration. The ancient Egyptians probably invented lipstick. From their paintings we can see highly stylised and painted faces. They used a mixture of purplish-red dye from the plant fucus-algin, iodine, and some bromine mannite, which was poisonous and resulted in serious illnesses. It was known that Cleopatra had her lipstick made from crushed carmine beetles, which gave a deep red pigment, and ants for a base. Lipsticks with shimmering effects were initially made using a substance found in fish scales called pearlescence. In India betel leaves and katha (Catechu) was chewed by women to get a red pigment on their lips. This was a popular practice that was remained a trend till recent time here. Some put henna on lips to get a peachy orange shade. Indian women also used beeswax and honey as lip gloss. In the 1500’s lipsticks made of beeswax and plant oils became popular in England. This basic concoction of natural waxes and plant oils remained the lipstick base of choice for the next several hundred years. During her reign Queen Elizabeth made red and black lip tints popular – made from beewax and plant extracts, and mercuric sulfide.

Lipsticks today

The “modern” era of lipstick really began with the invention of the pushup stick 1915. In the 1940’s came the long lasting lip colour. However the key ingredients for the base of the lipstick remain beeswax, lanolin, candellila wax etc. In fact wax is what helps mould the lipstick. The wax used usually involves some combination of three types—beeswax, candelilla wax, or the more expensive carnauba. Beeswax is a substance obtained

from the honeycombs. Carnauba wax, is an extract from the pores of leaves of Brazilian wax palm trees, and candelilla wax is obtained from the candelilla plant found in Mexico. The oils and fats used in lipstick include olive oil, mineral oil, castor oil, cocoa butter, lanolin, and petrolatum. Recently shea butter and marula oils have also become popular ingredients that are put in the lipsticks. In fact castor is the most popular oil that is used in the lipsticks, as this gives an added gloss to the lipstick. Fragrance and pigment are also added, as are preservatives and antioxidants, which prevent lipstick from becoming rancid. Pigments in the form of dyes known as lakes, and titanium dioxide give the bright hues to the lipsticks. While every lipstick contains these components, a wide variety of other ingredients are included to make the substance smoother or glossy or to moisten the lips. Ingredients such as moisturizers, vitamin E, aloe vera, collagen, amino acids, and sunscreen are added to lipstick to keep lips soft, moist, and protected from the elements.

Types of lipsticks From the oven to the store comes a variety of lipsticks: frosted, mattes, sheers, stains, and long-lasting colour. Frosted lipsticks include a pearly agent that adds lustre to the colour. Bismuth oxychloride, which is synthetic pearl, imparts a frost or shine. Bismuth subcarbonate is used as a skin protective. Matte lipsticks are heavy in wax and pigment but lighter in emollients. They have more texture than shine. Cream lipsticks are a balance of shine and texture. Sheers and stains contain a lot of oil and a medium amount of wax with a tad of colour. Shimmers have extra glimmer, which comes from mica or silica particles. Long-lasting color lipsticks contain silicone oil, which seals the colour to your lips. Lip glosses have high shine and contain different proportions of the same ingredients as lipstick but usually have less wax and more oil to make the lips shinier.

road test... Maybelline Super Stay Power Gloss, Rs 390 Claim: A fade proof gloss that stays on six times longer for up to 12 hours. Keeps the lips hydrated, and the colour bright through eating, drinking and habitual licking. It is non transferable. Verdict: We were a tad bit sceptical about a lip gloss that stays on. We followed the rules and applied the two mandatory coats of sheer gloss and top colour. At first the sheer gloss felt sticky and seemed to form a layer on the lips which can be uncomfortable for some. The top coat did give the lips a bright hue, almost lipstick like. But the impact was more creamy than glossy. But the colour stayed on even after three cups of coffee and lunch.

Shiseido Perfect Rouge Lipstick, Rs 1,200 Claim: A moisturising, smoothing lipstick with a creamy matte effect. Verdict: The effect was more matte than creamy on our lips. However our lips stayed hydrated, and soft without flaking, which other matte lipsticks cause. We loved the intensity of the shade on our lips. We preferred the darker hues in the range.

L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Shine Gelee, Rs 650 Claim: With royal jelly – a blend of amino acids, vitamins and lipids – gives it a smooth texture and nourishes your lips like a balm but shines like a gloss. Verdict: It kept the promise as it glided smoothly on application. The colour appeared subtler on our lips than on the tube. However it did soften up our dry chapped pout, and gave it a more supple look. Great for regular, natural look makeup.

Lipstick Roundup MAC DazzleGlass, Rs 920 Claim: Gives your with lips a jewel like shine, and the jojoba oil plumps out the pout. Verdict: It is a variant of the classic Mac LipGlass. The special polymers in the gloss added the promised shine. But the gloss did feel bit sticky upon application. But we were ready to forget that after seeing the voluptuous result.

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Plump Perfect Lipstick, Rs 1,190 Claim: Has triple ceramide and Maxi Lip complex to fill up the fine lines around the lips, and vitamins and antioxidants to keep lips hydrated and protected. Verdict: We were bowled over by the soft creamy texture of the lipstick. As it went on, lips felt instantly soothed. And the dry edge around our lips vanished. While we didn’t instantly notice the fine lines vanishing, but our lips did look fuller, and the colours were yummily bright.

Inglot Sleeks Cream, Price on Request

We all agree that lipsticks are the fastest way to brighten up your face. But what is better is that if these lippers offer more than just a slick of colour on your pout. So Team BEAUTY tested six variants that promise to nourish you lips, banish fine lines around the mouth and plump them.

Claim: A vibrantly hued lip colour with gloss like effect. It is meant to give your lips a high gloss, moisturised look. Verdict: We found the packaging interesting – a test tube like container with a cap. But we had to be careful when squeezing out the colour as extra blob could easily drop out. The texture was sticky, yet was lightweight on our lips. Did give the lips a vibrant dose of colour, but wasn’t as long lasting as we would have liked.

Care for your Precious

Baubles

Don’t you think you owe it to your precious little cocktail ring, or the dangling chandelier earring or even the slim solitaire pendant to give some TLC; after all they got you many oohs and ahhs. Besides you did spend a good sum on the same.Your precious jewellery is not just a fashion accessory but also an investment and a family heirloom that you can pass down to your next generation. So it is important that you maintain the shine and elegance of the pieces you own. Vijay Jain, CEO, ORRA Jewels shares a few simple tips to keep your precious pieces in top shape. • Proper maintenance of jewellery goes a long way in making them last a long time without damage. • One of the most important things that should be remembered is that jewellery should be kept away from moisture. • Always wear your perfume before you wear your jewellery, as perfume lessens the shine of your jewels. • Remember that even hair spray can gunk up your jewellery, so leave it off until you are ready to step out of the door. • Jewellery should be wiped with a soft cloth and no harsh chemicals should be used. • Never forget to have your stone settings checked and tightened every now and then to avoid the stones from falling off. • Diamonds tend to scratch metal surfaces, so while storing sets, earrings; each piece should be individually wrapped in cotton. • Once in 6 months the jewellery should be given for professional cleaning. NAILSBeautiful

Nails are as much a beauty accessory as your lips or your eyes, since your hands and fingers are major tools of expression. So keeping your nails in top shape is as important as your monthly facial. Joey Brown, International Spokesperson, OPI gives her expert advice on nail care and latest nail fashion trends, • Nails are in a way the mirror of our inside health conditions. If you are healthy you can find it out from the nails itself. • See to it that the nails are not brittle; lines in the nails are signs of health problems. • Splitting and breaking are the two major nail problems that women today suffer from. • Before applying nail colour, ensure that your nails are in a healthy state. Moisturise your hands and nails with hand and nail cream. Then apply cuticle oil on the nail bed to remove dry cuticles and keep the nail bed smooth. • To avoid getting your nail polish and nail art from chipping start by applying good base, then two coats of nail colour, folded by a top coat. • To prevent your nail from getting brittle, or yellowed apply top coat below the nails as well. • Reapply the top coat every two days to keep the colour fresh. Then after 7-10 days remove the colour and do it all over again. • You should try and take a nail extension now-adays as it is very easy to maintain or you can say it needs no maintenance at all, just put on a nail extension and forget taking care of it for at least 2-3 weeks. The best type of nail extensions is gels. • Red is the colour of the coming months. Try other darker colours as well, as they will look chic with light makeup. • The shape of the nails to go for is oval. The dark colour trend looks best on short oval shaped nails. • If you like longer nails then avoid darker polishes; instead stick to light, pearly hues. By Nabanita

Use HENNA the Right Way Henna is one herb that’s been getting lots of bad press last few years when it comes to hair care. The fault is not in the plant as much as in the wrong application and misconceptions. Use it the right way and your tresses will thank you. Hair care veteran Habib Ahmed, CMD, Habibs Cosmetics & Hair busts some myths about henna and its application techniques.

• When you are buying henna, don’t get taken in buying brands selling you henna products that claim to colour your hair as a permanent hair colour would. Avoid that at all cost. • Pick a herbal henna. Read the labels carefully to check if the henna powder has ingredients like brahmi, amla, bhringraj etc. • In fact there are a certain rules to follow when using henna to hide greys. Henna, unlike hair colours, cannot give you different shades of hair. You will only get a red-orange hue. • If henna has been mixed with walnut, catechu or amla, then the shade will slightly darker – more like mahogany. So it is a good idea to use henna if you want to hide 20 to 30 percent grey. • If your hair is more grey than that, then I advice you opt for a permanent colour. • When colouring your hair you will need to keep it at least for three hours to get dark enough tint.

54

BEAUTY | F E B R U A R Y

2010

• If you want a darker hue than what henna gives, soak it in tea decoction, or add coffee powder to the paste. • Post henna avoid shampooing for a day. Just rinse it well with cold water, this will allow the pigment to attach itself. • Henna is also a good conditioner, and works wonders for people with greasy hair and oily scalp. Make a henna pack with yogurt, and apply generously. Keep on for 45 minutes and then wash off with a mild shampoo, and condition as usual. • If you have very dry hair, but want to use henna, then oil your scalp and hair thoroughly. Then make a pack with yogurt, olive oil, and an egg. Apply on the head, and do not keep more than 30 minutes. Wash off well, and use a leave-in conditioner to smoothen the cuticles.

Brightening touch Radiance facial at Clarins Spa

I am a blessed girl; blessed because I generally have a clear skin, and not too many skin worries. But hours in front of the computer, travelling incessantly take their toll. Result a dullness that no amount of scrubbing and cleansing at home can get rid of. So I like to look out for skin brightening facials that can bring back the glow and help my skin fight the free radicals, and what not. Seeking my lost glow, I walked into Clarins Skin Spa, which offers unique treatments using hundred percent plant extracts using only manual method. The belief is that only hands and gentle touch can sustain your skin the way no treatment tools can. The research scientists at Clarins have created professional skin care products whose efficacy is best delivered to the skin through what the therapists at the spa call Le Massage – they use five essential touches using finger tips to elbows – to drain toxins, relax, stimulate and relive tension. The spa, following its international design norms is done up in Clarins’ signature colours red and white, which itself is a stimulating combination. As I was led to the therapy room, my therapist informed that a facial here involved stimulating all the five senses. So as I lay down on the therapy bed, I noticed the floating white cloud in a blue sky painted on the ceiling – meant to induce a feeling of calm. A soothing music played in the background to relax the mind. The treatment started with the therapist feeling various areas of my skin to understand the specific needs. Then came what

is called the Clarins Welcome – a foot and leg massage with aromatic soak. As she was giving me a Radiance Facial, she used what are called the PRO products with concentrated plant extracts. As the facial progressed I found the technique truly remarkable as my therapist tapped, pressed, and used gentle pressure on my skin to drain the toxins and aid better absorption of the product. She not only treated my face but also exfoliated my hands and arms, and massaged in a rich cream to soften them as well. She used unique combinations of movement all over my face, neck, and décolleté. So good was the calming experience that I needed some time to wake up to the real world once the treatment was over. As I stared at myself in the mirror, the transformation was instant – my skin glowed, and no sign of dehydration. The treatment came to an end, as I sipped a warm herbal tea, and skin care advice from my therapist.

Why we recommend: Simply because you need to

experience the massage techniques and the efficacy of the products used. We guarantee that this can get addictive as you see your skin getting better session after session. Every time you come out you will be enveloped in the soothing aroma of real plant extracts that linger on. Need we say more? Price: Rs 2,500

My Beauty Moment

Cosmetic physician, skin and hair care expert advisor for Ponds,Vaseline, and Marico Dr Rashmi Shetty, believes that her search for real beauty would end the day she finds a way to keep skin fresh and young permanently. Beauty to me is a person who brings a smile on my face at first glance. So it could be somebody’s happy face, or beautiful nice even-toned skin or just a radiant face which exudes confidence. That is beauty to me.

as we age. During the earlier days my skin was oilier and definitely younger so I used lighter and different products. But now my skin actually changes with the seasons, and I change products as per my needs.

What impresses me most is in this world of beauty is that science has advanced to such an extent today that one can look as beautiful, as fresh and as confident as they want. That technology can boost a person’s self image. Today we can erase every wrinkle on the face. There is technology to support that. We can probably remove all unwanted hair. We can remove the pigmentation on the facial skin. We can remove every unwanted thing we can point out to. My search would end the day I know that I can do something to keep your skin plumped up, fresh and young. Right now we don’t know how the skin really feels, how it looks dehydrated and old, how it can really be repaired and made to look fabulously fresh and young from the inside. The day we have something, which can stimulate the collagen to the extent that we want, that would be an ideal find.

I have always loved using coconut oil on my scalp and hair – since I am from South of India so we are brought up on coconut oil. Now I use Parachute coconut oil very regularly. I keep it overnight. I prefer Dove shampoo and condition my hair with the Dry Therapy from Dove. I also use hydrating shampoo from Feba Med. I keep changing the shampoo once in a while, if I feel in winter there is more dandruff, I use some medicated shampoo for a couple of weeks. If my hair is dry I switch back to Dove. Dove has been my favourite product for the last 10 years.

It is my job to beautify others. But I do indulge myself with beauty products. I am 37 and I have a daughter of 11 and I always get complimented for my skin. That is because I go ahead and take care of my skin the way I advice the others to do it. Products that I use are probably night care and a good sun care. I use a special serum customized for me by a German company. It is a powerful antioxidant and a skin brightener. Other than that I use face hydrating mask from Ponds once in a week. I use a sunscreen from La Roche Posay - a hi-end brand from L’Oreal. I really swear by it. If in the evening my skin feels dry I use a cream called X Omega, which is from a company called Aderma. I also use Ponds resurfacing face wash. I’ve been using these products for the last 2 years. Today I can say my skin is in great condition. But these are not the products I have been using forever, because I know that the requirement of the skin changes

Usually it is not a particular thing that makes you change. It’s because your skin and hair condition change; like now my hair needs more nourishment because I straighten my hair and I colour my hair, therefore I need a conditioner which is a lot more heavier and a lot more rich in moisture. Earlier my hair was naturally healthy. I did not need to fuss around too much. The only thing I stuck with was my coconut oil that is why my hair is the way it is today. I usually don’t use much of makeup. I just use a kajal at times and that is very rarely. My Kohl pencil is usually from MAC. Honestly I am not much into wearing makeup. Whatever little I wear, I use products from MAC. However my lipsticks are from various brands – depends on the shades and the feel of its texture on my lips. I believe that whether it is skin or your hair, you should be tuned into their needs. Even if you are loyal to one brand or a product, do not hesitate to change since your aim should be to take the utmost care of your skin and hair. Also understand that as you grow older the structure and texture of skin and hair change, and so should you.

Love Jewels

Delicate studded jewel, or one key chunky piece is all you need to make a sensual statement this valentine By

Nabanita Das

With the modern minimalist mood, women prefer jewellery that highlights without overpowering their look. Other than the wedding season when chunky, solid gold jewellery are added to the look, women like pieces that add a sense of subtle glamour to their outfit, and sense of style. “Jewellery is an important part of any woman’s wardrobe. Whether the choice is elegant, subtle or flamboyant, women today like key pieces rather than a whole gamut of jewels,” says Praveen Goel jewellery designer. In fact this season you get to see more of delicate pieces with intricately studded stones. Pendants, bracelets, rings and earrings make the desire list. “Stones like pink tourmalines, rubies, emeralds are in vogue this season,” says Vijay Jain, CEO, ORRA. Heart signifies romance, so heart shaped pendants, danglers, and rings are back as the prime valentine pieces. But there is a soft roundedness in the designs. And diamond remains the favourite stone when it comes to declaration of love. Says Sandeep Kulhalli,

On My

MIND

You would think that after years of working in the beauty industry and reviewing products and services, i would have learnt to deal with beauty advisors and skin care therapists at salons. But my recent experience at salon proved otherwise. I realised that no matter how trained or well informed you are, there come situations when you cannot really use your knowledge even when aware what’s good for you. It happened that in the shivering winter of Delhi, i felt like getting a facial that would bring back some moisture to my dry cheeks. So i entered this pretty well known beauty lounge, and asked for a facial. After a cursory glance at my skin, i was ushered to a therapy room, with no explanation what so ever on what facial they were going to do. I asked the therapist repeatedly what was she planning to use on my skin, and all she said was don’t worry. That really got me worried. No service menu, no explanation about the treatments, or my skin condition, as i was bustled into a therapy room, and given a dress to change in to. Even before i could catch my breath, she came back with a set of lotions, cleansers, and scrubs. I managed to take a peek at the labels and saw they were from a very common skin care brand. Feeling little reassured i let the therapist get to work. She did a passably good job of the facial. Since i had seen the product range used for the facial, i was quite taken

aback with the bill presented to me. The price tag was what you would expect at a high end spa in a five star hotel – where they use international brands and natural extracts. That’s when i turned

round to see another therapist going through the service menu. I paid and left – all that perceived glow gone from my cheeks replaced by a flush of anger. I did feel indignant at being ripped off, but couldn’t argue my way through, like any self respecting beauty editor should. I just came out pretending that it was for the sake of research on the experience a regular woman would have at a beauty salon boasting of great treatments and superlative customer service.
