beauty’s FACE

“I Have a Holistic Approach when it Comes to

Beauty…”

A face that instantly evokes the Indian beauty, actor Anushka sharma the brand ambassador for Parachute hair oil and Vaseline cream, shares her beauty regime candidly with BEAUTY. Let us take a glance at your celebs’s favourites.. As told to Gayatri T Rao

I often get to hear that my smile is my best feature. I flash it when I don’t feel beautiful inside.. While she is a fresher to brand endorsements and grooming products, Actor Anushka Sharma enjoys being subtle in personal make up.. What’s Beauty I feel, beauty lies deep within, might sound cliché but I have never been dolling up loads of makeup. One needs to be healthy both in mind and body, tempered with kindness and a strong will. I am generally very shy when I receive compliments, so whether it’s about my work or my looks I politely manage to muster a “thank you”. Grooming Routine I have a very minimalist skin care routine. It’s very important for me to scrub my skin and wash my hair off the products that are used during shoots. I simply can’t imagine going to bed without washing my hair. It might sound bit strange but I have been using Parachute and Vaseline products for years now, and am too happy to be endorsing the products that I actually use. . Perfect Look Today there is a trend of looking gorgeous all the time which is definitely worrying especially for young minds. Personally, I have holistic approach towards beauty. One needs to be happy and comfortable with oneself will always fall prey to the expectations set by others. Off the Camera There is a team of people who work towards getting that perfect look when you are facing the camera. But that doesn’t mean that I am frumpy when not facing the camera. I feel comfortable in my own skin. I have never used heavy make up so people won’t be shocked to see me without it, just a touch of mascara, maybe eyeliner and some lip balm is all.

Beach Ready It’s time to put your best foot forward and escape in the scenic beauty of the exotic beaches, as Gayatri T Rao makes you beach ready with easy to follow tips that shall make your vacations fun and frolic...

1 3 2 4 5 6 Who would wish to bask in the hot sunny whether when cool beaches are the best call? It is time to pack your bags and head on to the exotic beauty of the beach that captivates our minds in first go. But at the same time the harsh sun with its heat and the humidity in the atmosphere is extracting a heavy price from the skin. UV A rays are all set to trigger on tanning, pigmentation and photo aging along with UV B rays which lead to sun burns. Humidity at its high and mercury rising by and by, there is an increase in production of natural oils that initiate breakouts of acne and giving way to prickly heat and fungal infections. What’s worst is the heavy exposure to heat which results in wrinkles. While we should be flaunting our sun-kissed glowing skin, in sexy swimming attires, we prefer covering ourselves up to protect the skin from the ill effects of the boiling sun. As a result, when summers should be fun and frolic, one is rather more apprehensive. But, don’t you worry as we bring to you the best of tips to make you ready for a beach vacation.

Get rid of unwanted hair: Get rid of the hair havoc ‘ere you plan your beach destination: It is important to look and feel clean before you wear your bikini or a resort dress. Informs Dr. Sangeeta Amladi, Medical-Head, Kaya Skin Clinics, “Unwanted body hair has a tendency to show up at all the wrong times and you realize that you cannot wear what you want to. One of the most convenient ways to keep your plans from going for a toss is to invest in permanent hair reduction. Having a hair free, flawless body will make you wander confidently on the beach.”

Cleansing the skin:

Cleanse your skin with a natural based face wash or soap-based cleanser. Dr. Shobha Sehgal, Head Beauty Vertical, VLCC Day Spa says, “During the summer, water loss is more rapid, and humid conditions accelerate water loss through the skin as the body attempts to cool itself. As a result, sebum production increases, collecting on the skin and clogging pores. This process results in breakouts, so regular cleansing is recommended.”

Back to nature: A natural way of protecting the skin from UV rays is to rub tomato on any part of your body that should not be tanned. “It will have to be reapplied frequently, but is very effective,” says Dr. Vidhi Seth, Sohum Spa and Wellness Sanctuary.

Scrubbing: You should exfoliate your skin not more than once a week. It will keep the dead skin off and give a smooth look and feel.

Using a toner:

Natural Pastes:

Another natural method according to Dr. Vidhi is applying tomato paste directly to the body. She adds, “A half slice of lemon, one tablespoon of sugar, and one tablespoon of glycerin can be mixed with the tomato paste and can form an effective sun block. This also makes a great facial scrub.”

The next step shall be to hydrate your skin with an alcohol free, natural toner or fill a clean, sterile spray bottle with filtered water and mist over the face after cleansing or exfoliation. Socialite and painter Poornima Dayal suggests, “Keep splashing cold water on your face after every half an hour to keep the skin moisturized and cool.”

7

Sunscreen:Â Water resistant sunscreen lotion with SPF 15 or more which needs to be applied 20 minutes before sun exposure and repeated after every 2 hrs.

BanishWrinkles

There’s a new product in town that mimics skin’s natural mechanism to fight skin’s aging process and leave it supple. Try BOXTLAK-BL Cream Wrinkle is a furrow in the skin and is a natural process developed during aging. Premature wrinkles may be caused by deficiency of nutritional components in the different tissues, cellular destruction through excessive sun exposure, the effect of free radicals on the cellular membrane, and deterioration in the genetic programming of the DNA. All this brings about the atrophy of the skin and consequently a general process of degeneration. Ageing skin results from the passage of time, overexposure to the sun that destroys cellular ability to reproduce, lack of proper care while young, health problems and hormonal imbalances. When we express our emotions by smiling, frowning, squinting, our muscles contract thousands of time everyday. These movements exert tension forces to the dermis and results in formation of wrinkles around the mouth, forehead and eyes. One of the most striking signs of skin ageing is the increased wrinkling of the face, neck and the area around the eyes. Wrinkles form due to the effect of constant pull of gravity over time, environmental damage and continued facial expressions.

Now there is a new solution to this premature aging, and photo damage to skin. Shalaks Pharmaceuticals has recently introduced its cosmo-derma product to address this problem. It has developed an anti-aging cream Boxtlak-BL, which promises Botulinum Toxin A like results with regular use. What makes this cream unique is that the peptides mimic the skin’s natural defense mechanism. According to the company the cream stands out from the rest because of the combinations of ingredients that make it effective.

8 9 1 1 10 11 12 Moisturizers: The beach environment may be humid and high on UV rays which leads to dry and damaged skin. Moisturizers help retain the integrity of skin cells and a healthy look. They will help to keep the skin nourished and hydrated.

Nutrition: Dr. Shobha Sehgal suggests, “Any skin care talk or regime which does not include a discussion of nutrition lacks the basic principle of healthy skin care. Good health and beauty go hand in hand. For instance, a clogged and spotty complexion can be linked to a diet high in saturated fats and sugar. Dry flaky skin may reflect a diet low in fatty acids or vitamin E. A healthy, varied diet helps the skin defend itself against infection, cell damage and premature aging, especially during the summer months. Increasing your daily intake of fresh, raw vegetables and fruit adds vitamins, antioxidants and water to your diet.”

Body: Remember to keep cool and use common sense. Drink plenty of fluid, replace salts and minerals to avoid dehydration.

Vacation make-up: It’s more

of casual in look. The makeup should not be heavy and is mostly aimed at protecting the skin from exposure to sun rays, cut out the oily shine and prevent clogging of skin pores that often result in acne and pimples. Dr Shobha Sehgal suggests, “Let your skin breathe and use sheer makeup that serves more than one purpose. Instead of using foundation to cover up freckles, use translucent tinted powder to blot the skin and add color to it.”

Bronze Skin: That is the look

for summers, so one should work on getting this look. Sushma Khan, Naional trainer, Skin and Makeup, Lakme Academy, enlightens, “People like tan during summer. The reason they want to look dusky is bronze gives a sensual look in front of the camera and otherwise. Dusky look always absorbs maximum light. The features are more defined and clear. Always remember never try many colours with bronze look. This look is beach party look.”

24

BEAUTY | M A Y

13 14

Makeup that lasts longer: Cheek sticks and crème eye

colors are easy to apply and last longer in summer. Sushma says, “Matte effect lasts longer at the beach. If they are having a good time at the beach swimming and playing, they should use crème based products like blush on, base/foundation and liner pencils. This does not absorb water and tends to stay longer.”

Makeup to freshen up: If you must apply

foundation, mix it with loose powder to keep you looking fresh throughout the day.

15 16

Lips: Lips tend to dry faster than other parts of the body and licking enhances it further so a medicated lip balm with Aloe Vera is recommended. Moisturizer sunscreen lip balm is a first aid! For lips, the best protection against sun damage is a water resistant lip balm that keeps the lips moist and has an SPF of 15 percent or higher. Poornima on the other hand says, “Use light coloured moisturizing lipstick to keep lips moisturized.” You can also Go for the nude natural look for the lips. Even for evening beach parties, it is preferable to use loose shimmer powder on arms and neck and a soft gloss on lips.

Eyes:

Eyes should be done simply. Use neutral and soft shimmery eye shadow on lids and highlight the lashes instead.

17 18

Hair spray: Protecting hair from sun’s rays

is important, when you are out in the sun on beaches. “There are many protective hair sprays available which form a chemical layer on the hair as the sea breeze can lead to dry and brittle hair” says Dr. Sangeeta. On the other hand Dr. Vidhi says, “Some protective hair sprays specially made for this purpose are available, with less chemical content, will help you safeguard your hair texture from the sea breeze.”

Beach Wear: Wear loose fitting and

cotton clothes to avoid over sweating. Wear clothes which cause less absorption if UV rays. According to Dr. Vidhi, “Besides providing shade for your face, a wide hat can protect your hair from the damage by the sun. Choose the right size to fit in your head and sit in the shade whenever it is possible.” Dr. Sangeeta opines, “Light cotton clothes, sarongs are a must. Keeping your face in shade helps protect the skin further over and above the use of sunscreen.”

19 20 Timings:

Dr. Vidhi advices to stay indoors or in a cool place between 10 A.M till 4 P.M since during this time, one can experience maximum sun radiations.

Back from the beach: Once you are back from the beach, you should make sure you are not dehydrated hence a glass of buttermilk and/or coconut water is very refreshing! Any sunburn or unwanted tan can be easily dealt with the home made mask of yogurt and honey which can be made fresh and applied for 20 minutes 2-3 times a week. “During the night to counteract the tan, you can apply kumkumadi tailam on the exposed parts of the body,” is Dr. Mithun’s advice.

Hot is the weather and so is the make up! Believe me, the season is not the cakey affair of blush and compact but captivating the natural meadow, pastel and nude tones and innocent look. Often during the summers makeup focuses on softer colors like peaches and purples which are the basic summer looks, but if you’re more of a wild makeup maven, and can’t wait to try something new, then read on, this is only for you lady love!

The Style Sheet

Natural glow face

“Spring-Summer 2010 is all about customising your make up style. It’s about being unique and celebrating your difference. We are at moment in beauty where looking identical is surely passé. Make up is more personal and attitude driven this season. It’s about the evolution of your own personal style, rather than the revolution of very creative trends that are unattainable. It is time to celebrate our own individuality and style this season,” reveals Senior Artist Vimi Joshi, MAC, Middle East and India.

The best ways to describe the makeup trends this summer are feminine, romantic, and ultra pretty. Perfect skin is a major trend for this season. To be honest, perfect skin never goes out of style. The secret to achieving flawless skin through make-up, even if your skin is less than perfect, is to make your skin look untouched. Your skin should always look hydrated, so a great moisturizer is key. Make sure to moisturize so that you look as though you are glowing from within. Remember to keep things soft and appealing for the summer, Make-up

should be kept natural looking, but with a feminine flare. “ A quick and easy way to keep your skin clean from impurities, makeup and oil that clogs pores are cleansing sheets which refreshes your skin while maintaining the skin’s natural balance.” Says Make Up expert, Tashnu Khariwala, Shiseido. What to Try: Shiseido’s Refreshing Cleansing Sheets, Garnier Skin Naturals Sun Control Daily Moisturiser SPF 15 Summer make up is all about minimalism but can be more when it comes to your make-up choices. But you can easily learn the easy ways of making an impression by your personal scents by applying them accurately and in proportion. Rest lays the alluring aroma that you shall leave behind!

Know your Fragrance The foremost important thing is to know what flavour you wish in your perfume. Don’t you know that whichever is the smell, it shall reflect your statement and personality? Like a musky smell is all about being sexy, on the other hand a sweet fragrance evokes young and carefree attitude. If you are the flowery smell kind, remember that it’s all about strong scents, so done be overdone to make a rosy garden kind impression. BEAUTY | M A Y

Don’ts to Follow The Catchy Areas Not necessarily you have to soak your self in perfume top to toe, simply spray a bit on your wrist (vein line), behind lower lobes of your ears, near your waist (if you wish a warm hug), and underarms. These areas catch the attention as your body gesture revolves mainly around arms and neck only.

Go for Seasonal Favourites Choosing a perfume at time can be tiresome. We ain’t suggesting you to go out without it. The best way to avoid the confusion is to go for the seasonal fragrances. While summers are all about soothing natural fragrances, winters can be played with oriental and musky ones. The only thing to remember here is sweating and humidity tends to make the smell strong and pungent, so better go for light fragrances during the hot summer season.

1 Never wear your perfume on the dress as it will soon fade away leaving its awful marks on the nice piece.

2 Don’t select the perfume on the bases of its good reviews as that might not turn your kind, later.

3 Applying the perfume after wearing the exquisite ornaments is a complete no-no. Their can be a reaction as perfumes have chemical base.

Tress Trend

It’s time to pamper one of the most beautiful god-gifted accessories the hair. Nabanita Das brings to you the newest trends for the scorching summer to keep your mane shiny, chic and sexy...

Often one gets stuck when it comes to summer hair styles or the hair care as the sun right on the top of your head makes your cool curls a messy affair. But will that stop you leaving your beautiful asset carelessly? Niat! We therefore bring to you the latest of this season’s hair styles, cuts and accessories to accentuate your glam look the way you desired. Believe me, you shall flaunt your curls, like never before.

Play with texture Summer is hot, sweaty and sticky so lesser products are used on hair. Better way is to start by getting a good haircut. But that doesn’t mean to hack off all your length. Listen to hair expert Sapna Bhavanani of Fiama Di Wills to know more. “One can get a good cut while maintaining length and that will also make the hair more manageable. If you are the adventurous kind feel free to cut it off and go for pixies and textured bobs which are really hot flavour of the day. For the true adventurous look, one can try a textured bob on the crown with disconnected long layers. That way you can tie up your length and shall also have a bob. Or else, leave it open and have a super combo of both,” concludes Sapna. Well, now that suffices! The most important part of a great haircut is that it must maintain a health head, looks stylist and is easy to maintain while suiting your face cut and lifestyle.

Summer Hair Colors: With the change of season we get the urge to change the color of our hair as well. Now as summer is in full swing, we may want o choose a color which suits the seasons best. One thing should always be kept in mind, while opting for a color is to determine your general schedule of events for the summer. If you plan on spending a lot of time in the pool or at the beach, choose your hair color that can withstand harsh chemicals and conditions. And the other thing that must be kept in mind while coloring is that, hair tends to row faster when the weather is warm. You will have to do a bit of extra work while maintaining your roots. “As far as hair color goes i love the look of sun kissed hair in the summer. Copper / browns / a few light pieces on the tips / all look great together and sexy in the sunshine...they also don’t fade,” says Sapna Bhavnani.

He further adds, “The essential looks for this season are uniform, cyber sports, rebel and pixies. Well, that’s the trend setter look, what if you wanna go for quick styles? Learn a few simple updos to tie up your hair flat in five minutes to look stylish as well as cool in the heat. For frizzy hair folks! Use cold water to wash and avoid heat from the dryer. And do not brush your frizzy hair when dry.

Truth About

Hair Serum Give your hair a glossy, frizz-free glow with an après-shampoo dose of hair serum. Read on to find out what you need to know about this styling must-have. by Priyanka

Bhattacharya

With all the abuse your hair can take from brushing, styling, coloring, and highlighting, it can get frizzy and dull looking. Sometimes despite all that shampooing and conditioning, bad hair days can be imminent. You can banish that with drop of miracle hair potion – turning your dull frizzy mass into shiny, smooth, swishing mane. Welcome a bottle of hair serum on your dresser. It’s a magic fix it that can help keep the frizz under control and bring back the shine. Says Sudeep Grover, National Trainer – Hair for Lakmé Studio & Lakme Salon, “Serum is an important styling tool because it makes a protective layer on your hair that prevents damage done by blow drying and ironing. Serums can also make it easier to comb and style your hair, which will reduce dreaded breakage. And they can protect your hair from styling-product buildup and from the sun’s rays. Using a serum before your blow dry will also help you hold the style longer”

What is a hair serum: It is

basically made up of silicon oils like cyclomethicone, dimethicone, or trimethicone that soften the hair cuticles and offer a certain level of sun protection to the strands. Says Simi Dastidar, National Training Head-L’Oreal Professionnel, “Besides silicon oils serums also have nourishing oils, vitamin E and UV filters. They protect hair from UV rays. Specific serums give other benefits too such as repairing, defining of curls, shine etc.” According Sudeep, you need to understand your hair type and the hair need before picking up your serum. “In fact there are two major categories of hair serum, one that is used before styling, and the other as a finishing product. The serum used before styling helps detangling the hair, and styling serum adds extra shine and smoothens flyaways,” he adds. The hair serum coats your hair’s strands, offering a layer of protection against the elements and smoothing over any tendencies toward frizz. Hair serums with UV protection are good choices, since they protect your hair from sun damage. “A conditioner or mask would be essential to use as this is like a foundation or a moisturiser for the hair. It deeply nourishes and softens the hair, a serum should be used as an enhancer to coat the hair and protects it UV rays and has an anti-frizz action,” adds Simi.

How to use hair serum:

If you plan to use hair serum, it doesn’t mean that you forget the important hair care thing. Says Sudeep, “You need to shampoo and condition your hair and then use a serum.” Take a few drops of hair serum, rub them between the palms of your hands, and then smooth the serum over, across, and through your wet hair. “For medium hair types the size of a grain or two of wheat is the right amount. If you have thick or long hair then you will need to use more. But always start with little so that your hair doesn’t look greasy or limp. Always start applying from the end and then smoothen with it on the top,” he adds. “It works to protect the hair from any damage as it coats the hair, It controls frizz and gives an even smoothness to the hair. A serum is used post conditioning hair either with hair mask or conditioner. The hair should be towel dried and then product should be applied section by section to mid-lengths and ends of hair,” adds Simi of L’Oreal Professionnel. People with curly hair may need a bit more and those with straight hair might be able to get by with a bit less. Be careful to distribute the hair serum evenly, starting near the ends and working up to just below the roots. You should avoid spreading serum on your scalp and the roots of your hair, particularly if your scalp tends to be oily.

Drying and styling: Once

you’ve applied the serum, you can let your hair dry naturally, or blow-dry and style as you normally do. Hair serums can help protect your hair if you use heat-styling tools like blow-dryers, curling irons, or straightening irons. Simi advices that if you have put excess of serum in your hair, then blow drying it will help reduce the greasiness. Post blow drying take a drop of shine serum and run it on the top of your head for extra glam.

Fine-hair alternatives: If

you have very fine hair then that hair serum can weigh it down. “A light leave-in conditioner is a better choice for your locks. First shampoo and towel dry your hair and then apply a leave-in conditioner, which is lighter in texture,” suggests Sudeep.

Glosses and glazes, polishes and pomades:

Other products on the market can offer benefits similar to those of hair serums. Glosses, glazes, polishes, and pomades coat and protect the hair, leaving it smooth and shiny. If you have colourtreated hair, there are glosses designed to enhance your colour between sessions. Otherwise, you can choose a clear, colour-free gloss for shine. You don’t have to put up with dull, frizzy, flyaway hair any longer. Tame it with a hair serum and flaunt your silky, shiny tresses.

Water is the main base and functions as a solvent for other ingredients that’s the reason its gel or liquid in feel. Emulsifiers give the product a gel like consistency, and detergent is the core of all the cleansers. However, bathing gels have mild detergents or cleansing agents present in them. Surfactant is a foam forming tool, and preservatives as the name suggests is used to preserve it for a longer period of time. Gel as a Cleanser Alike harsh soaps, the gels clean your tender skin softly, leaving it supple. They don’t dry your skin instead, clean it well leaving pores open to breathe at ease. gels help your skin to be exactly what it should be – healthy, radiant and beautiful.

Why Use Shower Gels First and foremost a shower gel does not dry the skin. “They don’t have an alkaline base like soaps and medishower gels that have a ph similar to that of the skin, leave it supple and moisturized,” says Dr. Vidula Patel of L H Hiranandani Hospital, Powai. Moreover, they are very easy to carry. “Shower gels are less messy affair so are preferred,” tells Dr Satish Bhatia, Head of Dermatology, Lady Ratan Tata Hospital Cooperage, Mumbai.

Protect your Make up From Sweating

You wear a nice appealing make up and leave out for your vacation bash. By the time you reach the place you find just the remains of what you wore. Your nice alluring look sweated out leaving behind the sticky oily look. Don’t you get bothered as we are here with some helpful tips by Makeup Artist, Sheetal Singh and Bollywood Make up Artist Vidhya Dhar to save your makeup from sweating‌. Heavy foundation and mascara are a total no-no this summer, unless it is water-proof. Always try and use water-proof makeup during summers. Use a primer when you do a summerian makeup. As primer holds the makeup for a longer period of time, and it protects your makeup from sweating as well. Use mineral foundations to save your makeup from

sweating. Mineral foundations have SPF which helps you to save yourself from sun burns too. Blot powder is another important thing that should be added to your makeup kit. Blot powder does not have any color of itself, but it is very helpful to get rid of the extra shine that we get during this season. The best way to go is water-proof makeup. Do up with natural makeup, mascara and a bit of gloss, is the best way to go out during this season. Tinted moisturizer is another thing that can be of great use during this season, especially for evening parties. It can be used instead of foundation. And one last important thing, never forget to put on your sunglasses while going out during summers.

Pause

Wander Relax

Off late, I noticed the tendency of my body getting drained and tired with no trouble. Body ache, fatigue and low energy level were the common symptoms that I could notice. What came as a revelation was that I had gathered toxins in all parts of the body. To my surprise the toxins got accumulated by the eating habits, and the polluted surrounding around, as told by the experts. Realising what the toxins were doing to my body, I decided to go for the detox treatment at Richfeel Spa. This newly launched Spa is especially dedicated to detoxicology and relaxation. Their motto is Pause Wander Relax. The massages offered here instantly flushes out toxins from their resting places by kneading, straining and twisting techniques. Another speciality, The crystal treatment uses vibrations and healing powers of crystals to energize the body and remove knots. When I reached here I was guided to the lounge area to relax for a while. Then I was invited for the welcome treat where my feet were cleansed with lemon juice in one of the pedicure basin near the lounge. After that I had a session with the physiotherapist, who decided the oils to be used during my crystal massage on the grounds of my medical history. The therapist also explained to me about the crystal treatment. “Our unique detoxicology massages are performed using an intense muscle manipulation technique, with the help of knuckles and elbows. It is the best way to ease muscle tension and relieve stress.

All oil massages are performed exclusively in the tranquillity area only, where there is absolute silence.” The tranquillity area consisted of therapy rooms and a section where foot reflexology was performed. My therapist then took me to a therapy room and started my treatment. First I had my steam bath which opened the blocked pores of my dull skin and toxins started draining out. Then began the actual treatment. I was lying on my back and she started with an oil massage and then used a long special crystal to put pressure on certain points on my back. Besides the oil massage to my whole body, she used the crystal to put pressure on certain points on my face. Lastly, I took my shower and came out like a fresh maiden, chirpy and lively, bidding adieu to the luxury with a tasteful tender coconut drink.

Why we recommend: A Massage with crystals

combines the relaxation benefit and the healing vibrations of crystals balancing the whole body. The Crystal Balance method is originated from the use of massage and crystals in health and wellbeing. It combines the benefits of various massage techniques with the versatile effects of crystals, scents and sound. Contact: Richfeel Spa, Warden Road, Mumbai. Price: 95 minutes of detox massage – Rs. 2750/Who tried: Gayatri T Rao.

Beat Stress With

Homeopathy Stress is any outside force or event that has an effect on our body or mind causing mental and physical tension. Dr Mukesh Batra, Homeopathy expert give us ways to get rid of stress through Homeopathy.

BEAUTY | M A Y

Self Help Ideas:

Reasons For Stress: Stress is a part of our life. It is inevitable. It makes us ready for instant action; it also makes way for short-term stress response. This is called the fight-or-flight response. Stress reflects our biological response to situations. It is only when stress responses are channelled into our internal systems, do we run or stand up and fight. Or, reach a goal quickly. Stress brings out the best in us all too. During stress, our body requires extra energy and action at the speed of thought — to function and/or react. This, however, happens at the expense of other biological systems, viz., growth and reproduction, which are not essential for immediate survival. They are essential, of course, for our long-term survival. For example, when our hormonal systems are plumbed into the stress response, the effects are often dramatically stressful. Prolonged stress affects every system, or organ, in our body. It can also lead to major illnesses and/or early death.

Does stress Lead to Diseases? Stress is evidenced to trigger several illnesses — major and minor. Examples: backache, sleeplessness, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and also cancer. It can lead to menstrual problems in women, besides hormonal imbalances, fibroid tumours, endometriosis, and also fertility problems in couples. High blood pressure and diabetes are suggested to be stress-related conditions. Heart disease and stroke are stress-related; they are two leading causes of death on a global scale. Other equally notable

• A positive attitude, or thinking, is useful to beat stress. Other equally useful self-help ideas include: • De-focus on the negative; try to focus on positive thoughts. • Exercise regularly. Exercise reduces stress. • Eat a well-balanced diet. The mineral, magnesium, is a useful key nutrient in stressrelated problems. • Interact socially with people. A smile takes you a mile. • Value yourself, entertain yourself, seek yourself, and also others. Take time for hobbies. Also, your family. • Practice relaxation/meditation techniques, or yoga. Listen to soft, soulful music. • Read a funny book. Or, watch a comedy show. • Laugh your stresses out. health problems include aches and pains, headaches, migraines, lack of sexual urge, anxiety and depression. Stress can also cause gastrointestinal disorders including hyperacidity, ulcers, lower abdominal cramps, colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Stress can lead to frequent colds and infections, thanks to reduced immune function. Besides, stress can set off skin conditions such as rashes, eczema and psoriasis.

Stress Relief Through Homeopathy: Homeopathic medicines activate our body’s own defences (immune system). Homeopathy is a method of healing the body, naturally; it aims to treat the whole person, and not just the symptoms. It does not limit its treatment to the diagnosis of an illness. When you are ill, your illness has its own unique pattern of symptoms. You also tend to get those illnesses that result from the particular pattern of imbalance that is unique to your personal temperament and environmental factors. This is exactly what homeopathy looks at, analyses, and treats — safely, gently, and without side-effects. Ignatia Amara is useful for stress associated with a sad event, or after shock, alarm, apprehension, and emotional worry. Natrum Muriaticum is effective in stress states with intense fear. Piper Methysticum is useful for stress and worry associated with dayto-day life. Argentum Nitricum is useful for stress associated with closed places, heights, or stressful anticipation. Gelsemium Sempervirens is handy for stressful emotions associated with anxiety and apprehension. Moschus is a useful medicine for stress associated with nerve-wracking anxiety. Kali Carbonicum is a helpful medicine for that typical stressful, or anxious, feeling of daily life, felt at the pit of the stomach. Other useful medicines are Aurum Metallicum, Arsenicum Album, Aconitum Napellus and Kali Phosphoricum.

Raw is the Call This includes lettuces, radishes, tomatoes, celery, summer squash, broccoli and other leafy vegetables. As for cucumbers, Cool as a Cucumber is quite an apt saying for the summer and rightly called cool as well. It is about 20% more natural cooler than anyother vegetables. A chilled or fresh cucumber slice in your salads or vegetables can be truly refreshing. Infact, the season is more about salads, raw vegetables than cooked, spicy cuisine.

The Sprout Affair While not many have a taste for sprouted delicacies, this is the perfect energy booster for a hot weather. It can be a fusion of Indian Dals and Italian Pasta. It is a must have in your daily diet for gaining the drained out strength. Inbox There are a number of food choices we can make to cool down our over-heated bodies in summer. Raw foods, chilled salads and icy drinks, summer is a time to enjoy being outdoors, but when it’s hot, your body needs some extra things to keep you going. Well, leave your worries aside as we are here to update you with some of the best things to eat while spending time outdoors.

Divulge in Juicy Fruits An absolute favourite summer food, especially if it’s a traditional watermelon with seeds. Best when served chilled (delicious regardless), watermelon is sweet, delicious and refreshing. Another great summer fruit is orange; it provides a lot of hydration and of course, lots of vitamin C as well. These are especially good for replenishing your body after participating in physical activities outdoors.

Water Not a Food variety, but is incredibly important in hot weather. Your body needs to stay hydrated, and water is a far better way to do this than soda or alcohol.

Yogurt Yogurt is full of vitamin-B, and this vitamin helps your body convert other nutrients into energy.

Designer Masaba Gupta who played well with drapes and pockets on sarees says, “Summer is always about cotton and when we say cotton, we have immense scope to play with styles which have whole lot of flares that fit in the day today wear. Whether it’s a skirt or a short dress, feminity is high on trend. Fine pleats, gathers can also be experimented with during this season.” Well, now that sets the styles for this season!

Street Fashion

You might have a great passion for fashion but at times your personality doesn’t fit in the so called frame of ‘classy styles’, what to do? Close your eyes to trends?

Of course not! Designers like Nida Mehmood have a way out. Her recent ‘Sadakchaap’ collection is all about street fashion. “Street fashion is not always about casuals, its more about the styles that you get to see in your day today life. The silhouettes are generally simple with not much of accessorizing patterns to it. You can wear a simple kurta but can add a dash of colour to complete that look,” tells Nida. Why not! The casual look is always about the perfect attitude and a mix and match of great styles. Its time to try something of your own; Leave the ramp behind, for a while!

Subtle Trends

With scorching sun right on your head you certainly won’t like to go for opulent styles from the fashion weeks that shall end up providing discomfort. So the keyword for the summer season is always being simple and

subtle in appearance. “Off the ramp styles are toned down and moreover the season doesn’t allow you to go for loud styles especially during day. So, its always good to go for straight cuts like panel skirt, narrow pants or loose white shirt. If you have a liking for dresses then go for empire lines of flared frocks, they tend to give a subtle feel,” confirms designer duo jenjum and jasleen whose present collection was all about elegance. On the other hand designer Raghuvendra Rathore, who exclusively caters to high end Indian market and has an innate sense of styling, feels that opulence is totally out this season. “Comfort, fit and confidence are always maintained in fashion whichever is the season and wherever you wish to wear it on

The trend of unconventional designs, personal style; futuristic in approach are the key words of the present look. But don’t you forget to show your attitude along with your style!

“Large and over-sized frames are very much in fashion, but they definitely not heavy on face. Other than this feminine aviator shapes, geek designs, semi-rimmed, broad and hugging styles shall be seen everywhere,”says Simeran, Marketing Manager from Fast Track. Your eyes speak volumes about you so why not pat them this season with some ultra cool styles that shall readily enhance your appearance too.

Colour Palette for this season “White frames are ethereal and breezy. Although, delicate, but only apparently, because they flaunt a character worthy of an absolute accessory of minimalist inspiration; whether aviator or oversized, sparkling with a spray of rhinestones or embellished by jewelled logos, rectangular or softer forms, but sure to catch the eye. A quick-change colour, casual during the day, bold in the evening: wearing white means lighting up and attracting attention. White gives you a unique allure. Another style is African vibrations that rediscover the colours of the earth, palettes are reproposed in neutral tones: warm beiges become greyer, oranges turn to reddish hues and antique pink is dusty,” sums Amrita Chatterjee, Brand Manager, IDEE sunglasses.

On My

MIND

What does it really mean to go green with your beauty regime? Well it is a tough question to answer. Simply because till date not too many beauty brands or buyers are giving this a thought. Going eco friendly with your beauty regime is not about making a statement but the need of the hour. There are actually many ways we can go green. While researching on this topic, i realised that there were simple things i could do that would help me towards being more eco friendly than i am today. One key thing that i feel that brands that talk about being eco friendly can do is cut down on the packaging. I think most of us do understand that packaging is just a marketing gimmick, but what really makes us want use a product again and again is the efficacy of the ingredients. So money should be spent on developing products using sustainable ingredients rather than creating brightly coloured cardboard boxes or bottles showing green trees. In fact i feel that responsible brands should actually recycle, and reuse the containers that they put their beauty potions in. One of the great ways to do this is create refillable packaging. So if as a consumer i buy a shampoo bottle, i should get an option to go to the store and get my shampoo bottle refilled once the product is over, instead of throwing the bottle in the bin and picking up another. This is a win-win situation for both – the brand can cut down on packaging cost, and the user saves some money on the product, as well as cut down on plastic junk. Or the brand can give incentives to the customer who can return empty bottles or tubs to the company – these can be reused for further packaging.

But seeing today’s scenario this might take some time. However, as an individual i can do my bit in going eco-friendly with my beauty practices. First of all instead of using one-time use cleansing towelettes to take off makeup

(they count for a lot of garbage in the bin), i try using a soft cotton or linen washcloth along with the cleanser to clean up my face. These can washed and reused. Instead of always using a body scrub for exfoliation (washing off takes up more water) I do dry body brushing once a week, or try using a natural loofah along with my body wash to slough off dead skin cells. In fact, alternating between the two exfoliation strategies makes for great skin, and guilt-free beauty. Appreciate your hair’s natural texture, apply serum, and cut down on blow drying time. You save energy and trees.
