5 FREE THINGS TO DO Arataki Visitor Centre: Overlooking the Waitākere Ranges and your gateway to many stellar walks. The Domain, Grafton: Auckland’s oldest park is home to leafy walks dotted with contemporary sculptures and the free Wintergardens, a Victorian-style glasshouse.
Maungawhau Boardwalk: Encircling the crater and tihi (summit) of Maungawhau/Mt Eden, the boardwalk was built to protect the last remnants of a 1200AD pā.
Museums: Auckland War Memorial Museum, also in The Domain, is free for New Zealand visitors; the New Zealand Maritime Museum in central Auckland is free for all Auckland residents and $15 for out-of-towners.
