agair mail howdy from Texas I really enjoyed the July issue of AAU... I had the privilege of flying with Wayne Handley for a couple of days several years ago when he was still based at Metz field. I firmly believe it made me a better pilot. Wayne is considered by many to be the “Yoda” of aerobatic flying. Also, I took my first P-51 ride last year at Oshkosh. Wow! I just finished a 10-hour course in the T-6, so I’m getting closer to my goal of soloing a P-51.. Congratulations! J. J. poor pattern Just looking at the latest Ag Air Update eEdition. The Cessna with the poor pattern, do you think it was touched up in Photoshop? It looks like the spray is being released well below the boom. If not, I sure hope no one is spraying with a pattern like that. Brian Rau Medina, ND Morning Brian I had not thought about a “Photoshop” job on the photo. However, the point should be made. There are those still out there who think this is the way to set up a boom system! —Bill

looking for seat I want a seat in Brazil September through April flying piston spray planes. Will be flying into Recife, Brazil September 12th leaving 20th, I am currently spraying in Kansas, drought and temperatures above 100°F and crops are drying up. Any advice would be great; visa’s, commercial license transferable? I am currently learning Portuguese. Jim Friedrich Smith Center, KS Hello James; I am not sure I understood your email, however, you won’t be able to board the aircraft in the U.S. without a Brazilian visa. If you plan to depart in September for Recife, you’ll need to get started immediately on procuring the visa. I don’t know why you are going to Recife, but most like you won’t find any ag operations there. If you don’t have a Brazilian sponsor, someone committed to hiring you, odds are you will be wasting your time as far as finding a flying seat. But, that doesn’t mean the trip won’t be a great experience! — Bill

push I got to work this morning and picked up the mail. I always look over AgAir Update, before taking it to Cary’s hangar. Your editorial really hit a nerve. farming, too. Although, perhaps without such tragic results as in ag aviation. Just wanted to let you know how “spot on” I thought the editorial was. I have AgAir Update in the middle of Cary’s desk, turned to the editorial. It doesn’t hurt to have a few reminders staring you in the face! Thanks again. Your editorial gave us all something to really think about. Jayne Rucker Burdett, KS Hello Jayne; I hope this email finds Cary and you doing well in the land of OZ. All good here. Many thanks for your kind comments. You received your August edition of AgAir Update before our offices! So much for the “Pony Express”. I may have been taking a leap of faith in my editorial with the “time” thing. If nothing else, I hope it gave pilots a moment to pause and think. I know often our minds drift (no pun intended) while ferrying back and forth to the field. Hopefully, “time” will be part of that drift.—Bill

comments from agairupdate.com Dear Bob (Wheat), Thank you for submitting this article in Ag Air Update! My name

is Roxanne Dally Wells. My father is the late Rocky Dally. I was introduced to your article by my daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Sylvia Addison. (She’s married to my son, Jay Addison; (Rocky’s grandson). Jay has a deep interest in the old planes you mention in your articles. He and Liz take their little son to see the old aircraft anytime an opportunity arises near Lake Charles, Louisiana! I read the article (and the lovely poem) to my mom, Hilda Dally on the phone tonight when I spoke with her. She was so very proud and so pleased that you’ve chosen to mention Daddy in your article! She remembers you fondly and stated that you were she and Daddy’s very good friend. She’s doing well, never remarried, and still in Lake Charles, where I long to return! We’d love to keep in touch! Mom would love to send you a Christmas card, she said! We have lots of old photos and memories to share of Daddy and of this wonderful time in aviation history! Your article brought great joy to my family and me. Your work is not taken for granted. May God bless you richly, Bob! Warm regards, Roxanne Dally Wells Dear Ms. Wells; I forwarded your email to Bob and I am sure he will be in touch with you. —Bill

Dog days of summer

Anyone who has ever flown on fires has often wondered about decisions that come out of dispatch centers. A lot of the time the instructions we receive in the field make absolutely no sense to us. The best use of a SEAT is in initial attack. When smoke is spotted, the aircraft need to be launched to extinguish the fire while it is small. I recently called in a smoke sighting and told the dispatcher that if a nearby SEAT could be sent, one load would take care of it. They waited an hour and the fire expanded and required a Type II team the next day costing

hundreds of thousands of dollars. Oh well, who am I to make such a decision? I am just a pilot. The United States Forest Service hired the Rand Corporation several years ago to do an expensive study on the nation’s air tanker fleet. Part of it was recently released and did not make much sense. It suggested for the Service get rid of the air tankers and replace them with a fleet of scoopers. They would really work good here in dry land Nevada or Arizona! Remember, this study was paid for by your tax money.

Several new heavy air tankers were scheduled to go into service late this summer, but lawsuits over the contracts will delay or possibly prevent their use this year. The low number of available heavy air tankers has been very evident on the fires I have flown this year. More often than not, I have heard Incident Commanders place orders for them only to be told there were none available. I have worked several fires recently with the DC-10 Very Large Air Tankers (VLAT) and so far have been very impressed. They seem to work well in the mountainous terrain and fit in with other aircraft. On the Willow Fire north

There is no argument fighting wildfire with aircraft is a dangerous business. Like ag-pilots, we fly heavily loaded airplanes close to the ground and other obstacles. The similarities end there, as tanker pilots work in the heat of the afternoon when the air is rotten and more often than not in mountainous terrain. This season we have suffered through two fatal accidents in our small close knit industry. First, Tanker 11, a Lockheed P2-V, went down in Eastern Nevada killing both pilots. Just days later a North Carolina Air National Guard C-130 crashed in South Dakota fatally injuring four of the six crew. Although the investigations have not been completed for either of the accidents, the evidence in both point to bad air. The AgAir Update staff extends its condolences to the families of both crews.

F-11

The year of the SEAT by Marc Mullis I have always said there is no such thing as a normal fire season. Each one has its own personality and when it becomes history, it leaves an all new timeline of events. Mother Nature is very unpredictable and virtually impossible to out-guess. The 2012 fire season will certainly leave its mark on the history books as one of the most active in many years. It started early in the year and included record setting, aggressive blazes in Colorado and New Mexico. Early season fires blew up in areas like the Northern Rockies, which normally begin to burn only in late summer. As the season began the national preparedness level quickly ramped up to four on a scale of one to five. Early predictions of a bad fire season were rapidly coming to light. Before the season began, there existed a realization there would be a shortage of fixed-wing aerial resources. The loss of Aero Union as a heavy-air tanker contractor had reduced the fleet from last year’s nineteen to only eleven for 2012. Then, in early July, tragedy struck with the fatal crash of one of the remaining P2-V heavy air tankers while fighting a fire near the Utah/Nevada border. On the same day another P2-V made a gear

A crowded ramp at Boise.

F-12

up landing in Minden, Nevada which permanently removed it from service. The number of available heavies was now down to only nine. The National Forest Service (which administers the heavy contracts) reacted quickly by putting on three Canadian Convairs and activating all eight of the military Modular Aerial Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) equipped Lockheed C-130s. The numbers looked better but numerous orders for heavy air tankers went unfilled. In mid-July, tragedy struck again as one of the MAFFS units went down over a fire in South Dakota. Two of the crew of six were lost and the other four were seriously injured. The number of available Single Engine Air Tankers were also down from previous years. In the past, up to ninety had been on contract but for 2012 only about seventy would be on the list. The real problem was not with equipment but with pilots to staff the aircraft. Several lackluster fire seasons in a row had led many SEAT pilots to leave the industry and seek more stable careers. Many aircraft sat out the season and for most contractors finding relief crews was a real struggle. Early on, all available SEATs were on contract and strategically placed across the West in fire districts that were

deemed to be prone to burning. This year it would be up to SEATs to fill the gap left by the loss of heavy air tankers. In the past, a SEAT would be assigned to a district and rarely would it venture very far outside the boundary lines. It was an operational understanding that the optimal dispatch for a SEAT was less than forty-five nautical miles. It became evident early in the season this practice was not going to work. When fires sprang up, SEATs were dispatched across boundary lines and often across state lines. Orders were regularly placed for aircraft more than one hundred miles away and it was not rare for them to go as many as three-hundred miles. Often, eight or ten aircraft would show up over one fire. It was mid-June when I arrived in Wells, Nevada in my longtime ride, Tanker-409. Wells is situated at the base of the Humbolt and Ruby Mountains in the northeast part of the state and at that time of year there was still snow on the higher peaks. It did not take long for things to get busy as dispatches started spitting out of the fax machine. For the first couple of weeks most of the fires I flew on were human-caused. A large percentage

of these were from target shooters firing steel ammunition. A large influx of cheap steel ammo from China and Russia has given firefighters something new to worry about. The entire Great Basin and Rocky Mountain regions had experienced a dry, mild winter and the fuels were cured to the point where one spark from an errant bullet was all it took to start a raging wildfire. At one point, Utah reported it had 31 fires started by target shooters. At this time, many of the tanker bases had yet to have aircraft assigned to them. As a result, long distance dispatches were the norm, as we tried to help out other districts without resources. Missions were flown in Western Utah, Southern Idaho, and throughout Nevada. Most missions would be about 150 nautical miles but some would be over 250 miles. Usually fires start late in the afternoon, so after flying to the fire and dropping the retardant the mission becomes finding a place to get fuel and a hotel room. These type of missions were happening not just in the Great Basin, but all over the West as the shortage of heavy tankers pushed the SEATs into a new role as a long distance initial attack tool. On fire after fire, the Air Attack would place an order for a heavy only to be told that none were available. The next order placed would be for more SEATs. As the summer progressed into July and

August, the human-caused fires were on the decline and lightning-caused fires were on the rise. I believe the public got the media message about the steel bullets because the shooting fires ground to a halt. It was much harder to convince Mother Nature to stop shooting lightning bolts. When an area was forecast to have thunderstorms, aircraft were often prepositioned into the nearest reload base. When a lightning event occurred, there would often be multiple new starts. After one dry lightning storm in August, there were more than one-hundred new fires in the Elko District alone. In June, the fleet of SEATs was averaging about one hundred flight hours per day. As the summer progressed, the average slowly increased. When the season ends in late September or early October, it could well set a new record for total flight hours flown. An example of a typical week for this fire season would be like the one I experienced in early August. My support truck driver and I were in the grocery store one morning before work when my phone rang. It was my SEAT manager telling me I needed to come in early to go to a fire. We rushed out to the airport and when I got the coordinates plugged into my GPS, it showed the incident to be 260 nautical miles to the south. The fire was just north of Las Vegas. The closest reload base would be Mesquite, Nevada. The two-hour flight to the fire was over the beautiful mountain ranges of Eastern Nevada. After flying on the fire until dark

Two MAFFS in the pits at Boise. It takes about 10 minutes to load them with 3,000 gallons of retardant.

I stayed overnight in Mesquite. The next morning at the tanker base I found out I was still assigned to the same fire and should plan on another night there. The third morning found me still flying on the same fire. On the third load, dispatch radioed and told me I was getting a divert to a new fire seventy miles away. My new reload base would be Panaca, Nevada. After once again flying until dark, the SEAT manager gave me a ride to Caliente where the nearest hotels were located. On morning four, I was dispatched to a fire one-hundred miles to the north. After dropping one load on the fire, I was to return to Wells, my home base. Arriving at this fire, I was greeted by Jump 25, a Twin Otter that normally serves as a taxi for smokejumpers. The pilot told me he was Lead qualified and would take me into the fire and show me where to put the retardant. After making the drop, I was off to Wells. I was relieved because my overnight bag had quickly turned into an over-week bag. Within about seventy-five miles of Wells, I had to start dodging thunderstorms that were building and putting out a lot of lightning as they grew. About forty miles out, I saw the first smoke. By the time I called Elko Dispatch with a size-up of the new fire, I could see a second smoke up the valley. Before I landed, I had reported a third new start. Fueling and taking on a load of retardant, I was right back in the air and fighting fire. There was no rest just because I was back home. It is now mid-August and the 2012 fire season is not near over. There are at least seven large fires burning in our district and all aircraft are flying daily. 2012 will surely be remembered as the year of the SEAT.

by José Eduardo Ramos da Silva, Director of JE MídiaVisual Organizing events in the agricultural aviation since 1997, I have learned from the pilots this activity can be very exciting. Especially with fire pilots, I see how they are courageous and united, forming a kind of “brotherhood.” I just returned from Goiás, Brasil, where I took photos and video images of the 5th Course and Training for Aerial Fire Fighting of Ag Pilots. My friend, Astor Schlindwein, had invited me. On the final day, watching a launch of the Air Tractor AT-802 with registration PR-FOG, I stood with the trainees and others to watch the maneuver. They worked within the limits of flight safety, but they also know how to throw a party! The course was the result of a partnership among the Foundation for Research and Agricultural Studies and Forestry (FEPAF), Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA), ANAC (Brazil’s FAA) and Americasul Aeroagrícola. The theoretical and practical classes were held June 4-6 in the auditorium of the Prefecture of Formosa City and its airport. The training classes used a Corisco aircraft that is used for reconnaissance flights, an Ipanema and three Air Tractors. Twentyfour agricultural pilots received their Certificate of Qualification in Fire Fighting. The course was taught by Astor and Sepe Barradas from Americasul Aeroagricola and Monica Sarmento, agronomist for MAPA. It was with great satisfaction that I witnessed the participation of the AT-802 PR-FOG with the course. For the first time in Brazil, a pilot fire training course was done with an Air Tractor with dual controls/cockpit. All students had the pleasure of piloting this

superb machine! It is part of the Americasul Aeroagricola fleet. It also participated in the Rio +20, the UN conference held in Rio de Janeiro, in the service of Chico Mendes Institute for Biotechnology that is affiliated with the Ministry of Environment. This event was very good for the entire Brazilian ag-aviation industry and even better for the country, which now has more trained professionals for aerial application. After attending the theoretical and practical classes, talking with pilots, photing shoots, hearing hangar stories and socializing at the event’s closing BBQ, I realized agricultural pilots love what they do and therefore do it so well, flying safely during their missions. Congratulations to all who do this work - the Brazilians and the world fully recognize your work!

Olney, TEXAS – Only 18 months following the sale and delivery of its 2,500th agricultural aircraft, Air Tractor number 2800 recently took to the skies on a long flight to its new home in Brazil. AWAER Aviação Agrícola Ltda. is the proud new owner of Aircraft Serial Number 502B-2831, thanks to the sales efforts of AgSur Aviones, one of Air Tractor’s Latin America dealers. Air Tractor facilitated the aircraft’s financing through an Ex-Im Bank Global Access small business financing program. AWAER Aviação Agrícola is located in the city of Campo Verde, and it operates in the state of Mato Grosso in east-central Brazil. The region is the world’s 9th largest cotton producer and is also a major soybean producer. “We are really pleased that AWAER Aviação Agrícola has given Air Tractor another vote of confidence by purchasing this AT-502B. It’s a special milestone for them and for Air Tractor, too.” says Jim Hirsch, Air Tractor President. Hirsch reports that demand from Latin America for new ag aircraft has been strong. “We

have seen a lot of Air Tractor aircraft headed south again this year,” he says. “Air Tractor dealers serving Central and South America support aerial applicators in all the key agricultural regions there. They’re providing important sales, aircraft support and parts supplies to these ag operators in some pretty remote areas. That’s the key to Air Tractor’s global success: build a quality product and support it with a resourceful, responsive and knowledgeable dealer organization.” Final assembly of Air Tractor No. 2800 was completed on the afternoon of June 5. The aircraft was flight-tested at Olney Municipal Airport. Then on July 10, ferry pilot Jon Egaas flew the aircraft on a southern heading from Olney, Texas to Campo Verde, Brazil. The AT-502 arrived in Brazil and was delivered to its new owners on July 18. The new Air Tractor AT-502B will be the second Air Tractor aircraft owned by AWAER Aviação Agrícola. The company also operates an AT-402A. The new 502B

will more than double the company’s aerial application capabilities and will be used for spraying soybeans, corn and cotton. AWAER Aviação Agrícola will also use the aircraft for aerial firefighting. The Air Tractor AT-502B is the most popular model in the Air Tractor product line. Its 500-gallon hopper capacity, fuelefficient and powerful Pratt & Whitney PT6A-34AG turbine engine, uniform spray swath, clean aerodynamic lines and pilot safety features are an ideal combination of features for many aerial applicators.

about Air Tractor Air Tractor produces a line of aircraft that includes 400, 500, 600, 800 and 1,000-gallon capacity planes powered by Pratt & Whitney piston or turbine engines. They are used for agricultural purposes, fire fighting, narcotic crop eradication, fuel-hauling, fighting locust plagues, and cleaning up oil spills in coastal waters. A conversation with Dick Reade AgAir Update had the unique opportunity to interview Mr. Dick Reade of Mid-Continent Aircraft Sales and Service in Hayti, Missouri. Mr. Reade, in the 60+ years he has been involved with ag aviation, is an icon in the industry. Here is the first part, in a two-part series, of the interview that also consists of a video on AgAir Update’s YouTube channel to be released in October: AAU (Bill Lavender): Hello, Mr. Reade, how are you doing? Mr. Reade: Lovely Bill, it’s a great day. AAU: We are in Hayti, Missouri with Mr. Dick Reade, who I consider an icon in the agricultural aviation industry. Mr Dick, can you remember the year you started in ag aviation?

Dick Reade

AAU: Where were you based from? Mr. Reade: Bill, I started about 1949, in Traer, Iowa, then we moved into southeast Missouri for an insect infestation that never developed. So, we have our roots here in Hayti. AAU: Before that, however, you served in WWII flying a P-38, correct? Mr. Reade: Yes, I did. I was in reconnaissance in the Pacific, flying over Japan, Korea and China.

Mr. Reade: I was based in Okinawa, which was about a six-hour flight over the water. Always, the engine was rough and when we would return nothing would be wrong with it! All we had were cameras for high and low altitude. AAU: Just out of curiosity, when the government decided to turn you loose in a P-38, how much time had you logged? Mr. Reade: Oh, about 150 hours or less than that, total time, including training.

It’s Practically

ONE WORLD

AAU: When you came back from the military, what got you involved with ag aviation? Mr. Reade: I was always interested in ag aviation. Instead of cattle ranching and not being able to get flying out of my system, I started with ag aviation, which was a developing field at that time. AAU: The aircraft of choice would have been a Stearman? Mr. Reade: Yes, in those days the Stearman was the aircraft, as far as I was concerned. That’s what we trained with in the Service. AAU: Were the Stearmans powered by the 220 (hp)?

Mr. Reade: Yes, the 220, then we went on to convert them to the 450s. AAU: The War was over in 1945. Give me some time windows from when you started with the Stearman, the next step would have been the Ag-Cat program? Mr. Reade: That is correct. We were a pretty good-sized Stearman operation and we even went into Canada on some spray projects. When Grumman came out with the Ag-Cat, we were asked to join them in anticipation it was going to be a good, popular aircraft. We thought it was too, and were given the opportunity, along with six others, to offer the aircraft for sale.

September 2012

A-23

AAU: At that time, were you Mid-Continent Aircraft Sales and Service?

Mr. Reade: The world. In those days, there were no territories. That was around 1969.

Mr. Reade: Yes, we were.

AAU: Mid-Continent was already in business, right? As a spraying operation?

AAU: Were you also selling converted Stearmans? Mr. Reade: A few, we were more into spraying with them at the time. AAU: When Grumman came along with the Ag-Cat, did they invite you to become involved with the development program?

Mr. Reade: Yes, that is right. We then evolved into a sales, service and parts business, as well, right here in Hayti. We have been here for more than 50 years. AAU: Let me touch a little bit on the NAAA. Were you, in fact, the first president of NAAA?

Mr. Reade: Yes, that’s right. AAU: What did they originally call the aircraft during development? Mr. Reade: Well, first, Mr. Grumman was going to call it the GrassHopper, but after coming back from the war with all the Wildcats, Hellcats, etc., we suggested Ag-Cat. AAU: Do you recall where the first one was delivered? Mr. Reade: We used the first one as our demonstrator. It is still flying out in Western Kansas as I understand, however it has been converted to the 450. AAU: Once you became the Ag-Cat dealer, where was your territory?

Mr. Reade: Yes, I was the first president of NAAA. We were at a meeting in Washington DC, all belonging to the National Aviation Trades Association and had become very active in that association. We wanted our own separate division of NATA and they didn’t want that to happen. So, sitting in DC, A.T. Morgan and myself, we started our own association that became the NAAA. AAU: Since then, you have been inducted into the National Ag Aviation Hall of Fame in Jackson Mississippi. Mr. Reade: Yes sir, that is correct. Our interview continues next month with Mr. Dick Reade as he explains his involvement with the Thrush program and has words of wisdom for the upcoming generation of ag-pilots.

Sugarland wind generators by Tommy Summersill A seminar that was an update on the progress of the Sugarland Wind turbine project in South Florida was given May 4, 2012 in Belle Glade. A few local growers and some environmental interests were in attendance. It was a quiet meeting with a presentation given by the Wind Capital Group with a video patch to Gainesville and other locales throughout Florida. What we know is: 13,000 acres have been leased for the project, 114-124 turbines are to be installed with their

exact location yet to be determined, 240-250 feet base to hub height with blades extending up another 100 feet. Under normal operations the tip speed of the blades will be 180 MPH and they expect to be operational late 2013 or early 2014. From what they had to present and the list of supporters they provided it, clearly is a done deal.

grower concerning potential turbulence that could affect ag flying. The reply was uneasy diplomacy with no clear answer. It was later commented that if problems of that nature became an issue, the turbines could be stopped within 30 seconds and remain off for the duration of a field application. This would be coordinated with the project manager.

The meeting was attended by approximately 30 people with Dennis Nail and myself apparently the only ones there representing any ag aviation interests. One question was asked by a

A Florida fruit and vegetable harvester was beginning a job in Alabama. While assembling his crews, he was introduced to a gentleman with experience running harvesting crews. The harvester agreed to take that gentleman on as a 1099 contractor. Some time after that, the harvester and the contractor headed north in a truck to start the job.

Since they were heading into Alabama, the harvester was arrested under suspicion of trafficking illegal aliens over state lines. He was held for several weeks and investigated by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). His family was left without their father while he was locked up several counties away. Once he was cleared by ICE, he found himself being investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor. He lost time and money going through all of these investigations.

If you do not already, it is very important to utilize the E-Verify system (the federal employment eligibility verification system – http://www.uscis.gov/portal/ site/uscis) and also maintaining the Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9 for all employed workers and contracted subs. In the past, I-9 violations have resulted in hefty fines (from $375 to $14,000 in extreme cases), but as seen by this harvester, jail time and scrutiny from other government entities are very possible outcomes as well.

While travelling through Lake County, Florida they were pulled over for speeding. As both men were of Mexican descent, the deputy sheriff asked for their identification. The newly hired contractor turned out to be illegal with

Happy 15th Birthday, PAASS! The industry’s premier safety education program has come a long way; here’s what’s in store for the 2012–2013 season By Ken Degg NAAA Director of Education & Safety The PAASS Program is celebrating its 15th birthday of safety-education presentations with the 2012–2013 season. The Professional Aerial Applicators’ Support System (PAASS) was established in 1996 by the National Agricultural Research & Education Foundation (NAAREF), NAAA’s sister organization, to share important safety and drift mitigation information to pilots in a safe learning environment. NAAREF has been educating aerial applicators through the PAASS Program every fall and winter since January 1998. We have come a long way from the original program, which was presented by a single person hired for the sole purpose of presenting our safety message to state and regional convention attendees. It was a lot of traveling and hotel rooms for one person to present the program in 20 locations across the U.S., plus once in Canada. The second PAASS season was the beginning of the successful concept of having trained ag industry personnel present the program. Audiences immediately accepted this idea because the discussions were being led by their peers who had the experience of actually working in the industry and knew the pressures placed on operators and pilots. The early programs used a slide projector or overhead projector to illustrate some of the concepts discussed. These early programs evolved with the use of PowerPoint programs, which could do a better job of making illustrations more graphic.

With the 2003–2004 program, we added a new dimension by introducing the use of videos and computer programs. If a picture is worth a thousand words, seeing the information presented in motion adds much to the enjoyment, desire and ability to absorb the message presented. The advent of smaller, cheaper and more dependable cameras, which could be mounted on the aircraft, gave attendees a view of application equipment not available before. The PAASS Program Development Committee (PDC) is looking forward to the next advancement in technology and is always searching for new ways to make your PAASS presentations even more enjoyable and informative. Here’s a basic overview of what the PDC has planned for this year’s PAASS Program. Ag Airfield Watch Security Module— It is always important to maintain a secure facility for business reasons, but also so as not to lend credence to public perception that aircraft, especially ag aircraft, could be used for terrorism purposes. In addition to reminders of the Ag Airfield Watch Program, PAASS will outline a plan that state and regional associations can use to contact their members with information that needs quick dissemination. The plan is a modern update from the well-known “phone tree” and the more modern email blast. Human Factors Module—PAASS will again address the potentially deadly subject of stall/spin accidents from a new prospective. Former ag operator

and celebrated aerobatic pilot Wayne Handley and ag operator and aeronautical engineer John “Dusty” Dowd will discuss the flying situations encountered while performing ag operations with Rod Thomas, NAAREF President and longtime PAASS presenter. Today’s turbine aircraft are a wonderful tool for the ag operator and pilot, but we should understand the adverse characteristics that may come along with these advanced machines. Given the altitudes within which an ag pilot operates, the most important lesson instead of recovery is to avoid the situation in the first place. A spin entered because of uncoordinated flight is made worse by the weight of fuel out in the wings and the long nose with the propeller at a great length from the center of rotation. As a side note, the importance of stall/ spin training was immediately brought home by an event that coincided with the filming of this segment. After the filming, everyone involved was gathering to go to the airport for their return flights home when Wayne received a phone call. It was from a third-generation ag pilot who had just completed Wayne’s aerobatic course on recognizing and properly reacting to the aircraft’s unexpected attitude changes. While in a turn, the pilot failed to remain in coordinated flight and the aircraft stalled and started to roll inverted. Having been taught to handle this situation, the pilot was able to save himself and the aircraft. The results could have been catastrophic if he had not been prepared by Wayne’s instruction to handle the situation! Spray Drift Mitigation Module—Dr. Scott Bretthauer and our team of subject matter experts will tackle the problem

of chemical movement out of the target area. With the assistance of the wind tunnel equipment at the Agricultural Research Service in College Station, Texas, the program will demonstrate the effect the aircraft’s speed and nozzle pressure has on the droplet’s physical properties and its propensity to drift. It will demonstrate the way to minimize chemical drift when making passes along the edge of the field being treated, and the team will also explain, through videos and pictures, the effect different adjuvants have on the properties of the droplet.

not only U.S. aerial applicators, but also those outside the industry such as growers, government officials and allied groups including crop production product manufacturers and insurance providers. It is NAAA and NAAREF supporters that have enabled the program’s successes, which include keeping government regulations at bay, controlling insurance premiums and ensuring an adequate availability of crop protection products for aerial use. As such, we need to ensure the success of both NAAA and NAAREF. If you are not

The 2012–2013 PAASS Program promises to have something for everyone. Please plan to attend at one of the state or regional association conventions coming up this fall and winter.

We get it. You’re used to flying solo. But everyone knows you can’t do it alone. And neither can NAAA.

The PDC learns a lot from the feedback attendees provide. For example, a number of attendees have asked for more familiarization on the Federal Aviation Regulations applicable to ag aviation. They also felt they could use a refresher on basic aeronautical skills—concepts they were required to learn to become licensed pilots. PDC has developed a fun and informative session called “Are you smarter than a student pilot?” We hope this way of re-introducing pilots to aviation skills will make learning enjoyable and entertaining.

Membership matters. Join NAAA in its efforts to preserve and protect agricultural aviation and your way of life. Call (202) 546-5722 or visit www.agaviation.org to join the cause.

AMT handbooks receive major overhaul by Tom Hoffmann On March 20, 2012, the FAA released brand new revisions to both the Airframe and Powerplant Aviation Maintenance Technician Handbooks, adding over 400 pages of fresh

content as well as hundreds of new full-color photos and detailed illustrations. The amount of new information required both the Airframe (FAA-H-8083-31) and Powerplant (FAA-H-8083-32) handbooks to be published as two-volume sets.

The extensive update was due in part to the last revision being more than 35 years ago. “We did a complete overhaul,” says Barry Watson, an Airworthiness Inspector with the FAA’s Regulatory Support Division in Oklahoma City, Okla. “There were several changes and improvements to airframe and powerplant technologies since our last revision, so we had our work cut out for us.” Among some of the topics that were added or updated include advanced composites, plasma arc and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, lightsport aircraft engines, and a more comprehensive coverage of fuel systems. “We still kept a quite a bit of the information from the original handbooks,

but made corrections and updates where needed and added several new color diagrams and photos,” says Watson. And to enable more efficient access to specific items, both a glossary and an index were added. The revision also brings these important safety publications more in line with other industry handbooks and manuals currently available. According to Watson, several Part 147 aviation maintenance schools are already in the process of converting over to the new handbooks, and they are becoming the go-to reference guide for many Designated Maintenance Examiners (DME).

lookout for these and other FAA publications to be made available in a downloadable eBook format later this year. If you have any questions or comments regarding the new handbooks, please email them to: AFS630Comments@faa.gov. Tom Hoffmann is associate editor of FAA Safety Briefing. He is a commercial pilot and holds an A&P certificate.

The Airframe and Powerplant handbook revisions complement the release of the General Handbook (FAA-H-8083-30) back in 2008. “Together, these three handbook revisions represent a vital step forward with regards to advancing AMT training and education,” says Watson. Watson also credits the hard work of all those involved in the revision process. “We had several members of government, industry, and academia, who all pitched in to help this to be a successful product.”

The extensive update was due in part to the last revision being more than 35 years ago.

God (Isaiah 59:1-2). We were dead in sins and trespasses, living like the sinful world and fulfilling the lusts of our flesh (Ephesians 2:1-3). There is nothing within humanity that would cause God to love us—if you forget this you will become a self-righteous person. God’s love for humanity is based upon His choice to love us. Thinking that God loves you because of something within you is because you don’t understand the wickedness of your sinful flesh. Read Romans 3:9-19—it’s about you and me. “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die” (Romans 5:7). Sometimes men and women will give their life to save the life of a person with a good reputation or a child. But I doubt that anyone would give their life to save a convicted murderer and rapist. All of us are guilty of every sin in the universe in thought or action (James 2:10) and Jesus Christ went to the Cross and died for our sins so we could have eternal life in God’s Heaven if we will believe in Him as our Savior. Paul wrote, “For

I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells…This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief” (Romans 7:18, 1 Timothy 1:15). Paul understood the wickedness of his sinful flesh. That is the kind of person Jesus Christ died on the Cross for—sinful and ungodly people like Paul, you and me. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Not understanding how much God hates sin has caused many people to mistakenly believe that there is something within them for God to love. But God even turned away from His only Son when our sins were placed on Him so He could die for our sins. Jesus said, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46). God hates every evil thought, every evil word and every evil action; and yet, He has reached out to sinful humanity and poured out His love in our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). Without the

power of the Holy Spirit we could never understand how glorious God’s love for us is (Ephesians 1:13-14). Jesus Christ loved us when we were ungodly sinners and His love will present Christians faultless before God with exceeding joy (Jude 1:24). “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (Romans 5:9). The Bible warns of God’s impending wrath that is coming upon this ungodly world and ungodly people. “God is jealous and the Lord avenges; The Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries and He reserves wrath for His enemies” (Nahum 1:2). “The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men” (Romans 1:18). The only way to escape God’s wrath is to put your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. John wrote, “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:36).

“For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!” (Romans 5:10). The word “reconciled” means to bring two warring parties into a loving relationship with each other. When we were enemies of God, fighting against His laws and living a wretched and godless life, God brought us into fellowship with Him through our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. If the death of Jesus Christ brings us into fellowship with God, how much more the life of Jesus Christ working within Christians keeps us in fellowship with God! Paul said, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The

life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Living a Holy Spirit controlled life gives you the spiritual power to please God in your everyday life (Galatians 5:22-26). “Through whom we have now received the atonement” (Romans 5:11b). The word “atonement” in the Old Testament meant to make an offering or sacrifice that temporally covered their sins, but these sin offerings and sacrifices didn’t do away with their sins. “For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” (Hebrews 10:4). In the New Testament the word “atonement” means our sins have been completely paid for by the death of Jesus

Christ on the Cross (John 1:29) and Jesus Christ’s resurrection proves He has power over death (1 Corinthians 15:5457, Revelation 1:18). Accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior gives you God’s righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21) and makes you a part of the body of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you” (John 14:20). Becoming a part of the body of Jesus Christ is based totally upon your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior—nothing else counts—not even your membership in some denominational or independent church. Give God a chance to prove His love for you—believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior—you won’t regret this choice!

Runways There have been a lot of runway incidents this season, mostly due to downwind operations. Runway acreage is prime realestate and its limited and highly sought after. There’s only so much of it and it must be used wisely. Next to fuel exhaustion, a runway incidents has to be one of the most avoidable. A 2400-foot runway won’t grow any longer. If anything, it will shrink. Downwind operations will automatically reduce the runway length by a significant margin, depending on conditions such

as temperature and wind velocity. That reduction will exceed safe operational limits very quickly. If you’re working from a nurse rig or loader truck, they could consume as much as 100 feet of

runway, further reducing the usable length and compounding the likelihood of an accident. A pilot needs to be ready and willing to make the direction swap before he ends up in the ditch or against a loader truck. It’s almost like swallowing your pride to admit the weather has taken the upper hand. There is no airplane or pilot in the world that can out fly Mother Nature. We have to accept the fact we are subordinate to Her.

It takes more time to land and taxi back. Sometimes the runway is rough and it makes it more difficult. Ask the guy who had to make the call to the boss to tell him he can’t finish job because he stood his half million dollar airplane on its nose. Which decision is easier... swap ends on the runway or risk swapping ends on the airplane? It takes a lot of effort and time to pull an airplane out of a ditch or to take an injured pilot to the hospital. Back taxiing takes only a couple minutes. During the busy season, when we are making dozens of cycles per day, our take-offs and landings become incidental to the job. We tend to plunk the airplane down, swing it in, load it up,

pour on the power and get gone again, almost as casual as going into a fast food restaurant drive through. There are a lot of things going on in an ag plane during this time. Flying, the work has enough distractions and complications without adding marginal runway performance into the mix. I have enough to worry about accomplishing my job. So, I want my take offs and landings to be as least stressful as possible. If you find yourself bending the throttle lever over the forward stop and pulling the guts out of your engine on every take off or standing on the brakes and pulling full BETA on landings, it is probably time to consider cutting the load or changing runway directions. Calculating take off and landing performance is a big part of the aeronautical decision making process. It’s a part of risk management and an important practice in keeping yourself and your airplane in one piece. I know downwind operations are a common factor in this business; it is often times necessary and there are some runways that are strictly one-way operations because of obstacles or other considerations. An ag pilot needs to be proficient at landing and taking off with a tailwind. All too often, we either fail to recognize or ignore the fact conditions are exceeding our own capabilities and those of the machines we fly.

It doesn’t do any good to continue in downwind conditions Run March & September waiting to see how bad things get before making the decision to

reverse directions. You could have waited just one cycle too long. Remember, the wind on the ground might be light, but at telephone pole height it could be blowing too much. This is important because that is where you will be in those critical moments immediately after takeoff or just before landing. It’s a good idea to watch the tops of the trees for a indicator before trying a marginal takeoff or landing. Operators want to get things done in the least amount of time possible. Less fuel and less time equal more money in the bank. I don’t believe any operator worth his insurance premium is going to insist that a pilot push the limits of the safety envelope in order to shave off a few minutes. The pilot has the decision to make; it is his responsibility to bring the airplane and himself back in one piece at the end of the day. The pilot is the only brain inside the airplane. He is the only thinking portion of the package. He needs to be far enough ahead of the airplane and the conditions so he can plan accordingly and get the job done safely and efficiently.

New use restrictions on insecticide chlorpyrifos address bystander risk from spray drift EPA’s partial response to chlorpyrifos petition denies claims EPA is requiring significant reductions in application rates and mandatory buffers around sensitive sites to protect children and other bystanders who live, attend school, play, or otherwise spend time next to sites where chlorpyrifos is applied. To ensure timely implementation of the spray drift mitigation, EPA is taking steps to make sure that the new use restrictions appear on all chlorpyrifos agricultural product labels starting in late 2012. To increase protection for children and other bystanders, the lower application rates and other spray drift mitigation

measures ensure that any chlorpyrifos exposure outside the application site will not reach harmful levels. Maximum aerial application rates are being significantly reduced from about 6 pounds per acre to about 2 pounds per acre. Other new mitigation measures include buffer zones for ground and aerial applications around sensitive sites such as residential lawns, homes, sidewalks, outdoor recreational areas, and all property associated with buildings typically occupied by people. As part of the agency’s ongoing registration review, EPA examined

chlorpyrifos spray drift and potential bystander exposures using current scientific methods. EPA found that health risks from exposure to chlorpyrifos spray drift around treated fields can be lowered through the use of buffers and specific application methods. The buffer distances are greatest for aerial applications, which pose the highest risk. By adopting the new mitigation measures, applicators can effectively lower spray drift levels and reduce risks to bystanders. EPA’s new mitigation measures also respond in part to a petition filed by the Natural Resources Defense Council and

the Pesticide Action Network North America that asked EPA to revoke all tolerances and cancel all registrations of chlorpyrifos. In a partial response addressing the first six of ten petition claims, EPA has found that none of the six claims warrants revoking tolerances or canceling registrations for chlorpyrifos at this time.

EPA is taking steps to make sure that the new use restrictions appear on all chlorpyrifos agricultural product labels starting in late 2012.

EPA’s response to three of the remaining four claims involves highly complex assessments using precedent-setting risk assessment methodologies. Consistent with the agency’s external peer review policy, EPA sought advice on these issues from the FIFRA Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) at a meeting on April 10-12, 2012, and recently received the SAP’s final report, dated July 11, 2012. The agency will consider the panel’s comments in completing the petition response and final human health risk assessment for the chlorpyrifos registration review. EPA will address the risk issues necessary to respond to the petition in its entirety by December

31, 2012. EPA intends to complete the comprehensive chlorpyrifos human health risk assessment, including both its dietary risk assessment and occupational risk assessment, in 2014. The petitioners’ fourth remaining claim, that EPA failed to incorporate inhalation routes of exposure, is partly addressed by the chlorpyrifos spray drift risk assessment and new spray drift use restrictions that the agency is announcing today. The agency is continuing to assess potential exposure and risk from spray drift and volatilization following chlorpyrifos applications, taking into consideration the recently received

comments from the SAP. EPA will also address this claim fully, therefore, in its complete response to the petition in December 2012. aeromedical advisory

The future is coming, and soon… Time and technology march on endlessly. But they also provide opportunities for change. When I originally announced MedXPress back in the spring of 2007, I explained that it was our intention to eventually make the entire process paperless, but we wanted to offer a transition time to give pilots the opportunity to get accustomed to an automated process.

Well, that time of adjustment is ending soon. As you may have read, beginning October 1, 2012, pilots must use MedXpress to complete an electronic application for an Airman Medical and Student Pilot Certificate (FAA Form 8500-8).

Some people may object to this change on the grounds that the paper process works fine. It is important to understand, however, why this change is important for all of us. First, the paper process has many faults: it allows for too many errors; creates storage problems; and creates security risks. Also, the paper forms have occasionally been lost in the mail, and we are concerned that this poses unnecessary risks that the documents

could be used inappropriately. In addition, to print, store, and distribute the paper Form 8500-8 costs more than $150,000 a year. And these are only a few of the issues with the paper process. In the “non-electronic” era, the paper form was the only way for pilots to provide us with their medical history. But poor handwriting, spelling errors, and items left blank left us with incomplete or incorrect records which could create issues for pilots. Attempts to correct these issues with new technology date back to our first electronic systems in 1992. Further electronic advances helped to alleviate some of the storage and retrieval issues. But Aviation Medical Examiners (AME) still had to dedicate resources to transfer histories into the new systems and the handwritingand spelling issues remained unsolved. When we launched MedXPress in 2007, there was an end-to-end solution that solved most, if not all, of our common problems. MedXPress has proven to be an excellent tool. In fact, the only issue

we have is that we need to increase its usage. But this is not something we are requiring only to allow the FAA and AMEs to save money. There are benefits for you too, including a number of planned enhancements that will hopefully make the medical process easier, and that wouldn’t be possible with the paper system. One of the planned enhancements is to establish a tracking program that would allow pilots and AMEs to query the system to determine the status of medical applications. Another feature we would like to add is the ability to automatically forward the information that doesn’t change, so that pilots don’t have to reenter that information each time. We hope to start introducing new features in 2013. We have made a great deal of progress toward our paperless goal since we originally announced it in January. I have talked about this project at aviation medical examiner seminars, and my deputy, Jim Fraser, talked about it at

Sun n’ Fun. Most of the feedback has been supportive, and we have received many suggestions that will help to make this initiative successful. We intend to continue to meet with pilots at AirVenture® in July to help explain the change and also to get additional feedback. We think this will be a change that can work for everyone, but we need your help to make it happen. So, if you’re visiting Oshkosh in late July, please stop by and talk to me or any of the other members of the Office of Aerospace Medicine. Let us know how we can help with this transition, or with any other medical issue you might have. See you there. Frederick E. Tilton, M.D., M.P.H., received both an M.S. and an M.D. degree from the University of New Mexico and an M.P.H. from the University of Texas. During a 26-year career with the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Tilton logged more than 4,000 hours as a command pilot and senior flight surgeon flying a variety of aircraft. He currently flies the Cessna Citation 560 XL.

in my opinion

Robert A. McCurdy, Chief Pilot / Flight Instructor Flying Tiger Aviation, LLC, RobertMcCurdy@agairupdate.com

Back to basics Following are a few of the basics we teach regarding heavy takeoffs at Flying Tiger Aviation to our new wannabe ag pilots. Of course, this will be “old hat” to you veterans, but maybe it will help some of the new ag guys. Use all of the runway. Do not taxi out for take-off like you are flying a Boeing 737. In other words, taxi straight out such that when you make a hard 90 degree turn you are pointing straight

down the runway, and there is “0” runway behind you. On the takeoff roll, as you accelerate do not pull your airplane off the ground before it is ready and do not hold it on the ground longer

than necessary. Allow your airplane to fly when it is ready to fly. On take-off, it should go without saying, if you are about to knock the tassels out of the top of the corn on the end of the runway, you should push the power lever forward as far as it will go (worry about over torque/EGT or over boost later). If it appears you still are about to run out of runway, you can kind-of “encourage” your airplane to get airborne with a little extra back pressure on the stick. If you

do this, do not fly out of the ground effect or you will do a lot more than knock off the tassels of the corn due to a classic take-off and departure stall. Once you have established a safe climbing attitude and Vy airspeed, raise your flaps in increments, not all at once and do not be in a hurry to reduce power to cruise following takeoff. If it becomes necessary to make an emergency dump on take-off, be prepared to push the stick forward. A sudden rearward shift of the CG will make your airplane pretend to be a Saturn-5 rocket. If you cannot push the stick forward, and you may not be able to, (see YouTube 802 Crash), get hard on the left or right rudder. The airplane will then yaw left of right until the nose attitude is back in level flight.

All of this reminds me just how important using the manufacturer’s published takeoff check list is. E.g., forgetting to put the flaps down because you are relying on your memory when on a short runway. Lastly, even though you may be ferrying at 500’, another ag pilot in an AT-802 may be light and busting through 500’ when making a turnaround, so stay aware. Moral of the story, keep your head on a swivel and “sit on the edge of your seat,” which is the same as saying, fly in condition “yellow.” Stay alert! And so as per, be safe, have fun and make money.

Keep in mind, density altitude may increase more than the needed 2,000-foot airstrip from early morning to mid-afternoon. Make allowances for this and do not be lulled by your own ego into doing something stupid.

operators. We have a federal pilots license and a state drivers license which both allow us to cross state lines. The NAAA needs to push this even though some big operators who do government contracts are opposed to making it easy to go state to state!!!—Pennsylvania States should strive to standardize certifications to better accommodate reciprocation among the states.—Texas This should be a priority for NAAA and the state associations. Such an effort of solidarity would present itself well to state and national regulators. Question is, are state & national associations capable of such a meaningful task? A written test was developed a couple years back, what happened to it? This industry isn’t able to unite nationally on much. Let’s give this a go!—California There is too much red tape for applicators trying to find work in other states. This should be automatic as long as current license fees and certification from home state are current and up to date.—Oklahoma It would be much easier to take one national certification test, but the amount of knowledge that would need to be tested for all 50 states would be difficult to pass.—Illinois States know their regulatory needs better than the federal government. If this is inconvenient, then that is the price we pay for freedom.—Texas Pilots should only have to take a laws and regs test in the state they’re working in—Montana Pilots should be licensed nationally. Operators should be license by states.—Texas Treat it just like the CDL (Commercial Drivers’ License) with categories for each state.—Florida

• National certification with licensing fees for each state you want to fly in. That’s the only way the states will agree to it.—Louisiana • State rights—Michigan • I took the Indiana CORE and aerial this year. Found out it is almost the same test Tennessee gives. I’m pretty sure it’s all about money!—Tennessee • Please! I’m certified in about eight states now. All the tests are the same.

Give us a break!—Florida • A more standard, nationalized system would make life so much easier for everyone involved in aerial application. The current way is full of chaos. I realize every state wants their license fee and that’s fine, but right now jumping through hoops in every state is asinine.—South Dakota

A Hiller UH-12B helicopter impacted a tree near Pasco, Washington. The pilot was not injured, but the helicopter sustained substantial damage. According to the pilot, who was operating just above the top of the trees, he was in the process of moving from one section of the orchard to another when

he realized the helicopter’s main rotor rpm had decreased to a critical state. He attempted to increase the rotor rpm, but could not do so prior to the helicopter settling into the top of one of the fruit trees. The helicopter has been recovered and will undergo further examination. According to the pilot, the turbulence disrupted the “round out” to the field and the airplane’s wheels and left wing contacted the corn. The airplane turned sideways, slid backwards, and it’s empennage sustained substantial damage when it deformed. The pilot indicated that there

The pilot turned left and made an autorotation run-on landing to a field. After the helicopter came to a stop, the main rotor blades flexed downward and severed the tail boom. Approximately 1.75 gallons of fuel was drained from the two fuel tanks. The pilot reported the usual fuel consumption was about 25 gallons per hour and the tanks had about 4 gallons of unusable fuel. The pilot said there were no mechanical problems prior to the accident and the engine was most likely starved of fuel due to the low fuel level and unusual attitudes inherent to helicopter aerial applications.

Aircraft: Air Tractor Inc AT-402B Injuries: 1 Fatal. An Air Tractor AT-402B impacted terrain during an aerial application flight near Britt, Iowa. The pilot sustained fatal injuries. The airplane was substantially damaged by impact forces and a postimpact fire.

The pilot reported that he was unable to activate the motorized spray system after arriving at the field to be sprayed. He returned to the departure location in order to troubleshoot the inoperative spray system. As he maneuvered the helicopter to land next to a groundsupport vehicle, the main rotor system impacted the landing pad installed on top of the vehicle. The pilot reported that after the impact there was a vibration throughout the helicopter and elevated cyclic stick pressures. The main rotor system, tail boom, and fuselage were damaged during the accident sequence.

The pilot was reportedly completing some final spray runs along a set of power lines at the time of the accident. A wooden power line support pole was damaged near the accident site. The airplane came to rest in a corn field about 217 feet northwest of the damaged power line support pole. A postimpact fire ensued and ultimately consumed most of the airplane. The pilot was transported from the scene and died about 6 hours later due to injuries received in the accident.

On July 18, 2012, about 1100 central daylight time, an Air Tractor AT-502B impacted a bean field after takeoff from a private airstrip near Wisner, Louisiana. The pilot sustained a serious injury. The airplane was substantially damaged. The pilot reported that the airplane lifted off of the 2,500-foot long turf airstrip, but then did not climb out of ground effect. It settled into a bean field off the end of the runway, substantially damaging both wings. He noted that the airplane did not accelerate as expected; although, there did not seem to be any engine issues during the accident takeoff. The pilot described the runway condition as rough, with a south wind about 3 knots. The accident takeoff was to the east. NTSB Identification: *CEN12LA491* Date: July 19, 2012 Location: Fergus Falls, MN Aircraft: GRUMMAN G-164A Injuries: 1 Serious. A Grumman G-164A airplane was substantially damaged when it made a forced landing to a field after a loss

of engine power near Fergus Falls, Minnesota. The pilot was seriously injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the agricultural aircraft operation flight conducted under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137. The pilot told a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector that he was on his fifth pass over a large corn field when he saw a puff of white smoke from the engine. The pilot shut off the chemical sprayer so he could assess the engine and turned toward a road. About half way through this turn, the pilot observed more puffs of smoke and the engine’s manifold pressure began to drop. The pilot said he was losing airspeed, so he jettisoned the chemical load and made forced landing in the corn field. The airplane flipped over after landing, which resulted in substantial damage to the upper left wing, rudder and vertical stabilizer. An FAA Airworthiness inspector performed an examination of the radial

engine, which revealed the #2 cylinder head was cracked. NTSB Identification: *CEN12LA480* Date: July 25, 2012 Location: Akeley, MN Aircraft: Scotts-Bell Inc 47G-2A Injuries: 1 Minor. A Scotts-Bell 47G-2A helicopter was substantially damaged when it impacted terrain while spraying a potato field near Akeley, Minnesota. The pilot reported he was on a “clean up” pass and descending into the field when he experienced a slight yaw to the right and felt a slight vibration that seemed to be coming from the rear of the helicopter. When he began to apply left pedal input the helicopter immediately entered an excessively nose low attitude with an increased yaw to the right. After the pilot applied aft cyclic control the helicopter impacted terrain and came to rest on its left side. The fuel system remained mostly intact with only a minor fuel spill. There was no postimpact fire and the pilot was able to exit the helicopter through the right cabin door.

Controlling aflatoxin by air by Bill Lavender As times change, aerial applicators become more creative with the way they use their ag-planes. Originally, it was enough to dust for insects, then other pesticide uses naturally followed. Ag-aircraft also are used to fight fires, reclaim wasteland and a host of other missions. However, one mission that is relatively new is the spread of “good” aflatoxins (non-toxigenic) to combat “bad” aflatoxins (toxic). Kenneth Lauderdale formed Lauderdale Aerial Spraying in 1978 working from the Caldwell, Texas municipal airport. There is not much aerial spraying in east central Texas, however, Kenneth’s operation had three C-188s for treating pastures and cotton. The cotton was over 20 miles to the east in Brazos River bottoms. In 1992, Kenneth decided to sell two of the C-188s and buy a C-310 and an AT401. It was the usual decision made by ag-operators to consolidate aircraft and expand by starting a charter service. Deciding later to relinquish the charter

service, Kenneth sold the C-310. Beginning with the 2010 season, he sold the AT-401 and replaced it with an AT-402. Kenneth Lauderdale recounts a month of aflatoxin work in Texas from his office in Caldwell, Texas.

In 2010, Lauderdale Aerial Spraying took a turn from pasture and cotton spraying. The company had become involved with a chemical company spreading treated wheat and barley seed in corn test plots for the control of aflatoxin. It was new science where grain seeds were treated with nontoxigenic aflatoxin to intentionally infect healthy corn before the toxic aflatoxin could establish itself. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mycotoxin (fungus). In certain doses and strains, it can be deadly to warm blooded creatures, including man. The primary problem is infected feed being given to livestock. The biggest culprit is infected corn. When a corn field becomes infected with aflatoxin, it has very little value. The fungus can be devastating for the corn farmer. This was happening to east central and north central Texas corn growers.

Eight years ago, two chemical companies recognized the problem and developed a seed treatment designed to stop aflatoxin. After they had the prototype product, they needed an aircraft to refine the application technique. This is where Lauderdale Aerial Spraying stepped in.

(L) Kenneth Lauderdale and Clyde Kornegay with Lauderdale Aerial Spraying’s 2012 AT-502. Lauderdale Aerial Spraying is located west of Caldwell on Kenneth’s 500-acre farm. Many years ago when the company was based on the Caldwell Municipal airport, it was asked to leave by the airport authorities. Two weeks after leaving, a tornado destroyed the hangar once occupied by Lauderdale Aerial Spraying aircraft.

After many test plots and much research, Lauderdale Aerial Spraying was able to effectively control aflatoxin in corn by spreading treated grain seed at 90-foot swaths from application heights of about 30 feet. The application rate is 10 pounds per acre. The seed flows well through a factory gate box set at about a 1/2-inch opening. “Because we are dealing with a live organism, there can’t be an exact science for the application,” explains Kenneth. Applications are made as evenly as possible, but because the aflatoxin organism is mobile, it is not as critical as other dry applications like fertilizers. Rain and wind do not reduce the effectiveness of the application.

Applications start in May with a two to three-week application window. The corn needs to be between the ninth or tenth node stage and tasseling. Applications start in Gonzales, Texas and advance northward as far as the Oklahoma border. Whether the corn is in a drought or wet from rain and irrigation, the application controls aflatoxin. In a test plot three years ago, during drought conditions, the application resulted in an 80% reduction in aflatoxin. However, stressed corn, like from drought, hail and lower cost varieties, is a prime candidate for an aflatoxin outbreak. The effectiveness of the application is measured by the amount of aflatoxin found in the treated corn. This can range from 0 to 40 ppb (parts per billion). Treated corn with 20 ppb infection is acceptable, but 0 ppb is common. Most grain elevators won’t accept corn with over 20 ppb infection. Lauderdale Aerial Spraying will use 8-10 ag-planes during May to meet the demand

for spreading the aflatoxin impregnated seed. Operators from throughout Texas come to help. This year, Kenneth managed the operation from the ground while Clyde Kornegay flew the company’s new AT-502. Because of the application’s narrow time-window, Kenneth only owns one AT-502. He believes the technology for fighting aflatoxin could change and thereby reduce the need for aerial applications. The AT-502 works best for aflatoxin applications, as well as others Lauderdale Aerial Spraying makes during the season. The AT-502 can cover 2,000-3,000 acres in a 12-hour day. The seed is delivered in 2,000 pound bags. An auger truck is used to load 3,300 pounds into the aircraft. Coordinating with chemical suppliers for timely product delivery is always a challenge and it is imperative to maintain a good relationship with the suppliers. Planning for this intense time in May takes all year. Kenneth gives presentations at

grower meetings. He works with sheriff departments, advising them about what the yellow aircraft is doing. He fortifies his relationships with the chemical suppliers and meets with various airport authorities. The operation will work from more than 20 airstrips. Many are municipality airports and require excellent stewardship while on their ramps. “I am conscious about how we are perceived while at municipal airports. Our operation is good for the airports and the local economy. We bought over 50,000 gallons of jet fuel this past year from FBOs. When we are in town, our crews often book as many as 10 hotel rooms and eat at the local restaurants,” explains Kenneth. Each pilot and crew boss carry a credit card. Kenneth’s wife, Emily, is constantly in touch with the credit card companies apprising them of where the operation is working and who will be charging to

the credit cards. Kenneth is on the road acting as a dispatcher to keep crews in the right places at the right time with plenty of fuel and product. After the aflatoxin work is completed, Lauderdale Aerial Spraying returns to a more normal routine. Kenneth climbs back into the seat of the AT-502 to finish the season; flying over pastures, cotton, milo and sunflowers. Running the flying service after alfatoxin work is a lot different than during those hectic days of May. North and east central Texas are hot beds for aflatoxin that can destroy a corn crop. Until the technology and the application technique for spreading “good” aflatoxin in corn fields was developed, the future for growing corn there looked bleak. Now with an effective treatment by Lauderdale Aerial Spraying, corn is thriving in north and east central Texas.

payback in kindness In the early 1990s, Kenneth loaned, without charge, one of his C-188s to an operation in Castroville, Texas whose owner was serving in Desert Storm. He figured it was the least he could do for someone serving our country. More than a decade later, Kenneth met the operator, Charles Torkelson, who was still running the flying service in Castroville and now is retired from the Air Force Reserves. Torkelson thanked him for the decadeold favor and said if there was anything he could ever do, please call on him. Kenneth’s son, Brad, wanted to fly. However, Kenneth preferred he didn’t start out flying ag. When he finally met Torkelson (working off the same strip), he explained how Brad was pursuing a career in the Air Force with the ROTC program at Southwest Texas State. Torkelson extended an invitation to Kenneth and Brad to tour the Reserve unit and the C-5A. With a little help from Lt. Col. Torkelson, eight years later Captain Brad Lauderdale is Air Refueling qualified and an Instructor Pilot for the 68th Airlift Squadron, Lackland AFB Texas. January of 2011, Brad volunteered for a six-month deployment that operated the BD700 Global Express in “Operation Enduring Freedom” in Afghanistan. Brad is still serving in the Air Force Reserves flying the C-5, but he is also flying his first ag seat in a C-188 with “the” Lt. Colonel.
