heads up I know the season may be getting long out there, and the last thing many of you want to hear is that your activities are becoming subject to even more scrutiny, but all I ask is that you, “Dont shoot the messenger.” I received two reports in the last couple of weeks regarding USFWS. One reported that a USFWS Officer visited the applicator’s place of business and instructed the applicator to refrain from flying over


conservation properties as this would “disturb the wildlife.” (We all realize that USFWS does not have jurisdiction over airspace, I am simply letting you all know what happened.) The other report was of USFW adopting a “zero tolerance” for pesticide drift on their property. The zero tolerance related to private growers, aerial applicators, ground applicators, etc... Conservation officers have been told to report all suspected incidences of drift to the MDA for possible enforcement. I don’t know what is driving this ramped up attention from USFWS, but applicators should be aware of the situation. Fly safe! Terry Stieren MAAA

Rocky Mountain High The 2014 summer wildfire season is well under way and in most parts of the country it is off to a very slow start. Compared to the ten year average, it is off by more than fifty percent in both the number of fires and in acres burned. Predictive Services have been saying all year that it would be a normal to sub-normal season for all parts of the country except for California and the Pacific Northwest. As of now it has been the slowest season in a decade. We will just have to wait and see what Mother Nature has in store. The first week of July is a period that has special meaning for wildland firefighters. Two different incidents nineteen years apart took the lives of thirty-three firefighters. In 1994, the South Canyon Fire just outside of Glenwood Springs, Colorado blew up after the passage of a strong cold front. More than forty firefighters were on Storm King Mountain that day when the event took place. Some literally ran for their lives in the steep and difficult terrain while others deployed fire shelters and hoped for the best. After the smoke had cleared fourteen young men and women were unaccounted for. Just last July, 2013 nineteen members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots were killed when outflow from a thunderstorm caused a fire they were

hiking into turn on them just outside of Yarnell, Arizona. The new Exclusive Use SEAT contracts seem to be working very well. The aircraft are being moved to wherever they are needed and are not tied to any geographic area. Thirty-three airplanes were strategically placed around the country for the start of the contract and they have the Western U.S. covered. The ones that did not see any action in the first few weeks were moved to where fire activity was occurring. I really like the shift to six days on and one day off. It is a much better prescription for rest and work than the old twelve and two. Even though any one aircraft may work with numerous SEAT managers over the season, each contract module is now assigned a Project Inspector (PI). That individual serves as a clearinghouse for all paperwork associated with his or her particular aircraft. This makes for a single source of information instead of chasing down multiple managers scattered across the country. As more and more of the next generation heavy tankers are in service, I am having more opportunities to work with them and I must say I am impressed. The other day, I worked a fire in Northeast Utah that had four SEATs, one P2V, two BAe-146s and a DC-10 assigned. The

forty-five to fifty-minute ferry time for me was only twelve to eighteen minutes for the jets. Watching the DC-10 make a drop is just awesome. With one load of retardant, T-910 nearly sealed off one flank of a twenty-five hundredacre fire. The three MD-87s Erickson had on contract for a couple of weeks were recalled because the engines were ingesting retardant during drops leading to compressor stalls. The company is working on a fix and hopes to have them back in service soon. Within just a few years, we could have an all-jet fleet for heavy tankers. I have always longed to spend a summer in the Rocky Mountains and it seems I am finally getting my wish. I have been in Colorado for over 10 weeks and see no signs of leaving. I love the mountains and the moderate temperatures. Hope you all have a safe and prosperous season and maybe I will see you here in the Rocky Mountains one day.

floats the by Graham Lavender The iconic Fire Boss is an aircraft that one never forgets. The massive AT-802 airframe sits atop Wipline Model 10000A floats, that could pass for small watercraft, and commands a presence whether scooping water for the fire or sitting on the ramp for the next call. Ben Wiplinger, founder of today’s Wipaire, was involved in aviation at an early age. After attending the University of Minnesota, he moved to California and flew to work in a Ford V-8 powered Aero Sport aircraft. He served in WWII, where he developed a pre-oiling system for radial engine bombers. After the war, he started an aircraft repair and maintenance business called Wiplinger Aircraft Service. In 1951, he bought his first seaplane, a Piper Super Cub on Edo 1400 floats. He had issues with the Edo’s electric gear system on a set of Cessna 180 floats, so he designed a hydraulic system and sold more than 100 sets. (Coincidently, this airplane is still owned by Bob Wiplinger, Wipaire’s CEO, and is now on Wipline 2100 amphibious floats). In 1959, Ben sold his business and put all his ideas and design work into building his own set of floats; what would become the beginning of the Wipline float series. He formed Wipline, Inc. in 1960 and in 1961, Ben bought a Cessna 185 to use as a design testbed for his first set of floats. After three years and over $8,000 invested, he delivered his first set of floats with innovative design features; a flat top for ease of entering and exiting the aircraft and a patented special metal bonding technique that reduced the number of rivets needed to build the floats that achieved a smoother and lighter float. Over the next ten years, Wipline, Inc. built and sold over 30 sets of floats. Bob

Wiplinger, Ben’s son, began working at Wipline in 1970 after graduating from University of Minnesota with an aeronautical engineering degree. In 1971, Wipline bought 160 acres along the Mississippi River and moved its manufacturing facility there and opened its seaplane base. To this day, Wipaire has a year-round weekly cookout at the seaplane base. In 1974, Bob expanded the company’s range of services by founding Wipaire, Inc for performing maintenance as an FAA certified repair station and Cessna service center at Fleming Field. Wipline, Inc. and Wipaire, Inc. merged together in 1979 when Bob purchased Wipline, Inc from his dad. During the 1980s, Wipaire introduced the Wipline 6000 float for the de Havilland Beaver and the Wipline 8000 floats for the Cessna Caravan. An FAA certified avionics repair shop was opened in 1989 and a refinishing department was started at this time. By

the mid-1980s, Wipaire had 35 employees and had sold over 700 sets of floats. The 1990s saw the introduction of several new series of floats, including the largest in the series, the Wipline 13000 for the Twin Otter, as well as the smallest Wipline 2100. The Wipline 13000 came about in 1992 and became Wipaire’s first foray into firefighting after a collaboration with the Province of Ontario to create a water bomber float for a Twin Otter aircraft. Several STCs were completed including Wip-Tips wing extensions, door mods, and the turbine powered Boss Beaver. The customized interiors shop was opened making Wipaire a one-stop shop for its customers. It was in the early part of this decade, 1992, when founder Ben Wiplinger passed away. During the 2000s, Wipaire moved into its present day headquarters at Hangar 1 on Fleming Field. In 2003, the Fire Boss was introduced with its Wipline 10000A

floats, a spinoff of the popular Wipline 13000 series floats. Since then, nearly 70 Wipline 10000A float sets have been sold worldwide; 41 sets have been delivered to the leading Fire Boss distributor, Air Tractor Europe SL in Valencia Spain; four in the U.S. to Aero Spray and 16 into Canada with most going to Conair. Wipaire created Fire Boss, LLC to ensure that the rigorous quality and service needs of the aerial firefighting industry are attended to with the highest priority. In 2008, the dual cockpit Fire Boss was certified, along with a 1,600 SHP engine conversion for the AT-802.

Wipaire has built over 2,000 floats since its formation in 1960. Prices for Wipline floats range from $30,000 to nearly $1 million. The Fire Boss floats are the most expensive and complex with their scooping ability.

To be able to serve increasing demand, the Wipaire maintenance department expanded its capacities by establishing its first service center in 2013 in Leesburg, Florida. Float installations, general maintenance, customized interior installations, avionics installations and installations of select Wipaire modifications are performed at this central Florida facility. Today, Wipaire has 176 employees and builds 50-70 sets of floats a year. With over 180,000 square feet of manufacturing, engineering, administrative, and maintenance space, boasting hangar door openings as large

as 25’ x 70’, the company offers extensive modifications to many types of aircraft to include; single point fueling, engine/ propeller upgrades, wing STOL kits, numerous airframe mods, wing tip extensions and gross weight increase kits, as well as six models of Wipline AirGlide skis for snow operations. New and used parts, equipment, avionics, aircraft sales, and other services such as fueling, storage, and power carts are also offered by Wipaire from its facility at Fleming Field in South Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Wipaire has engineered over 100 Supplemental Type Certificate (STCs) modifications for improved performance, convenience, and reliability. These FAA approved modifications span the spectrum to include Wipline float installations, Wipline AirGlide ski installations, Cessna 206 right hand door installations, engine/propeller upgrades, gross weight increases, cabin extensions, battery relocations, instrument panels, and many more. Aeroglobo/Lane Aviation deliveries Air Tractor AT-802F to Mato Grosso Brazil firefighters Aeroglobo Aeronaves, associated with Lane Aviation Inc, the largest distributor of Air Tractor aircraft in the world, participated on May 21 in the delivery ceremony of two SEAT AT-802F aircraft that will be used by the state government of Mato Grosso Brazil to combat fires that affect the region, along with being used for environmental monitoring and actions of civil defense. The official handover ceremony took place at the Grupo Bom Futuro airport and in the presence of numerous political and military authorities, including the vice-governor of Mato Grosso - Francisco Daltro, Security Secretary of State Alexandre Bustamante dos Santos, the commanding general of the fire department – Colonel Aderson José Barbosa and the owner of Grupo Bom Futuro - Erai Maggi Scheffer. The aircraft were designated to the Battalion of Environmental Emergencies of Mato Grosso. The sales contract signed between the government of Mato Grosso and Aeroglobo Aeronaves provides for an Air Tractor AT-802F with a dual cockpit, complete dual controls and a hopper capacity of 820 U.S. gallons, a fire gate

computer for controlled release and discharge setting and an avionics package for communications and navigation, as well as an autopilot and other instrumentation. According to the commander general of the fire department, Colonel Aderson José Barbosa, Mato Grosso is one of the Brazilian regions most affected by fires. “This is the first time the fire department has acquired an aircraft as a firefighting

tool, putting the fire department at the forefront in the country to fight fires. “With this structure, it is possible to protect all of Mato Grosso.” Due to the way the project was conceived, Colonel Aderson says “There is quick and effective aerial firefighting within 200 kilometers of Sinop Brazil. We are very vulnerable to forest fires and unfortunately this type of event causes significant losses, both human and environmental, that causes considerable damage to local flora and fauna. “The aircraft will enable the fire department to create a framework for monitoring and planning for combating fires. It is this high level of aerial assets, which will bring us much more security.

According to the owner of Grupo Bom Futuro, Erai Maggi Scheffer, fighting forest fires effectively without the Air Tractor would be impossible. “We use Air Tractors for the application of pesticides on crops, especially soybeans, cotton and corn. We keep an aircraft in readiness for any event of a fire in our corn fields. The Air Tractors are essential in firefighting, especially in Mato Grosso with its four or five months of drought, where small areas have little management that creates the potential for widespread fires. One of a kind plane and pilot by Marc Mullis, AFF Chief Editor Ever since its introduction by Wipaire in 2003, the Fire Boss has been a big hit in the aerial firefighting industry. It is basically an Air Tractor AT-802F fitted with a specialized set of amphibious floats based on Wipaire’s Twin Otter floats. The Fire Boss fills a niche in the specialized form of aerial firefighting known as scooping. Scooping is when an aircraft skims across a body of water to fill its tank with a load of water. The process, which is not quite flying, yet not really landing, requires a great deal of skill and concentration on the part of the pilot. When the right conditions are met, scooping can be very effective in putting a lot of wet stuff on the hot stuff. With a suitable body of water close by, the turnarounds can be as short as two to three minutes. I once flew on a fire next to the Columbia River in Washington State with a Canadair CL-215. That scooper was delivering twenty loads of water per hour, while I was struggling to get one load of retardant per hour. With the Air Tractor constant flow FRDS fire gate installed, the Fire Boss maximizes the use of retardant dispensed on the ground due to the precise, constant retardant flow rate delivered by the gate. The combination of the Wipline floats and Air Tractor’s constant flow FRDS fire gate, transformed the rugged AT802F aircraft into arguably the lowest cost, most effective aerial firefighting solution in terms of cost per gallon of retardant delivered.

There are nearly 70 Fire Bosses in operation worldwide. They have been accepted and have become very popular in western Canada, several European countries, Argentina and Australia, as one of the primary tools in the aerial firefighting fleet. Despite this widespread use, it may be surprising to learn that there are only four Fire Bosses on contract in the United States since the program began. One reason is that U.S. fire agencies have traditionally relied on landbased air tankers. Another reason for the Fire Boss’ slow start in the U.S. is the lack of awareness of the requirements for suitable water sources for scooping operations. Not all

areas will be ideal for Fire Boss operations, but there are many applications for the Fire Boss that fire agencies are not aware of or have not previously considered. Currently, the only states that employ the Fire Boss in their fire suppression activities are Washington and Minnesota. However, several other locations within the states of Idaho, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas, North Carolina, Michigan, Florida and California would also be suitable for scooper operations. Fire Boss LLC, a sister company to Wipaire Inc., has been created to explore opportunities in other parts of the country and to promote the Fire Boss for use by other fire

management agencies at the federal, state, county, and municipal levels. The only domestic Fire Boss operator todate has been Aero Spray, headquartered in Appleton, Minnesota and owned by John Schwenk. John is no stranger to aerial firefighting, having been active in the Single Engine Air Tanker program for many years. His entry Fire Boss contracts came about because of a close working relationship with Bob Wiplinger, CEO of Wipaire, Inc. and Fire Boss, LLC. John’s home state is known as The Land of 10,000 Lakes (actually 11,842 that are over 10 acres) and it would be the perfect place to prove the Fire Boss. Minnesota has a short but usually intense spring fire season that occurs after snowmelt and before green-up. None of Aero Spray’s pilots were seaplane rated, so John’s first step was to get them up to speed for flying off the water. Both experienced AT-802F SEAT pilots, John and Jesse Weaver attended a flight school in Florida that specializes in seaplane ratings. After completing this

requirement, John purchased a Scout on amphibious floats so they could build flight time to meet the insurance and fire agencies’ criteria for piloting the Fire Boss. Jesse took the Scout to his home state of Louisiana that winter. He spent months splashing around the bayous and lakes that cover the southern part of the state building time and gaining confidence on the water.

aircraft was moved to Deer Park, Washington where it served a 60-day assignment. The aircraft was contracted and managed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), with funding provided by the Washington Department of Natural Resources (WA-DNR). This arrangement worked well for all agencies involved, as the aircraft was used on BIA reservations as well as state and federal lands.

Once Jesse had enough flight time logged it was time to move up to the Fire Boss. This was an intimidating step from the diminutive Scout to the 16,000-pound beast with a cockpit two stories high above the ground. The training program was paced and meticulous, but in time, Jesse was feeling right at home. In the spring of 2007, the Fire Boss was tested on a state contract in Minnesota. Although the contract did not produce much flight time, it was a good training experience for all involved.

At the end of the contract, SEAT manager Bruce Jourdain reported that the Fire Boss had flown on 24 incidents for four separate agencies for a total of 49.57 flight hours. There were a total of 179 drops made in the following amounts: 121,900 gallons of water, 12,750 gallons of Thermo-Gel and 4,850 gallons of retardant. A typical mission saw the aircraft depart its land base with a load of Thermo-Gel and once that load was delivered to the fire, scooping operations commenced. A federal contracted aircraft is not allowed to scoop from a body of water after having retardant in its tank. Whenever Jesse flew out of the Omak Tanker Base delivering retardant to a fire,

the hopper had to be cleaned before the Fire Boss could go back to scooping. All agencies agreed that the Fire Boss was a great success. I asked Jesse about some of the differences between flying the Fire Boss and a standard wheel-equipped AT-802. He told me the hardest thing he had to adjust to was the sheer height above the ground or water while seated in the cockpit. The aircraft sits about two feet higher on land than it does in the water. Another big difference between the two types is that the Fire Boss has retractable landing gear. As one Canadian Fire Boss pilot demonstrated, if you attempt to scoop with the wheels extended you will wind up inverted in the water. For this reason, Fire Boss pilots are required to attend marine survival training. In this program the trainee must be able to demonstrate the ability to extricate from the cockpit while upside down under water. Jesse completed a course provided by the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. Fire Boss pilots are also required to wear a life jacket during operations. The aircraft are equipped with a small oxygen tank intended to allow the pilot to breath for a short period while immersed. Scooping operations are pretty straightforward. The pilot selects a body of water that is at least one mile long, oriented into the wind and a minimum of four feet deep. A normal approach is made and once the aircraft is on the water, the probes that scoop the water are extended and full power is applied. It takes twelve to fifteen seconds for the hopper to fill, at which time the probes automatically retract and the aircraft can be flown off the water. The Fire Boss is a very heavy aircraft, with its empty weight of 8,600 pounds tipping the scales almost 2,000 pounds more than its

wheeled brethren. To avoid exceeding the aircraft’s certified gross weight of 16,000 pounds, the pilot must select the volume of water to be scooped. When that amount is reached, a computer shuts down the process. As fuel burn lightens the aircraft, the load is steadily increased. The aircraft Jesse flies has 380 gallons of fuel capacity and a maximum foam capacity of 78 gallons. With foam concentrate onboard, he starts out scooping over 500 gallons and ends up taking on a full 800-gallon hopper. With the big fuel tanks, he can stay on the fire scene up to four hours. The early Fire Bosses equipped with the Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67AG engine were underpowered, especially during high-density altitude conditions where fires are often fought. Recently Pratt & Whitney introduced a more powerful version of the engine and labeled it the F-model. With 300 additional horsepower, it is a good match for the big amphibian Fire Boss. The extra power meant scooping distances were reduced, climb rates were increased and the cruise

speed was upped. Jesse says with the PT6A-67F engine he experienced climb rates in excess of 500 feet per minute and cruise speeds that almost match those of a conventional-gear AT-802F equipped with the PT6A-67AG. He stated that with the bigger engine the airplane could really do the job it was intended for. There just aren’t that many pilots around with the credentials and experience to meet the contract and insurance requirements. Because of this, Fire Boss LLC has created a ground school curriculum for pilots. In-aircraft training can also be provided to customers in a dual cockpit Fire Boss and is available in customer-owned dual cockpit aircraft, as well. Additionally, a maintenance training curriculum is available. The Fire Boss has been a great success story. There is no doubt their numbers will continue to grow worldwide. Now, I’m waiting to see how long it takes Air Tractor and Wipaire to put amphibious floats on the AT-802’s big brother, the AT-1002.

Long-time Australian ag pilot remembered by Kathy Mexted and photos courtesy of Julie Black As winter sets in across the southern hemisphere, David Black’s (Blackie’s) family try to make sense of a life without him. Christmas came and went, back to school, birthdays and an anniversary. They say the first six months will leave you numb, and while privately, families would be carefully pasting photos into an album and maybe, if she can bear it, a widow might carefully fold away his clothes, Julie Black has continued to run the business that she and Dave had only owned for a couple of years. Blackie’s aircraft went down on 24 October, 2013 while fighting the fires west of Ulladulla. Dave was born in Adelaide and completed Year 12 at St Peters College. After completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering in South Australia, he bartered with his parents to trade farm work for flying lessons. Aviation became a central part of his life and he pursued a

career as an agricultural pilot—one that took him from Adelaide to Griffith to Borneo. It was not only his broad smile and laconic personality that made him popular and immediately put people at ease, but his natural flying ability and continuing quest for improvement that saw him admired as a pilot and later, a businessman. Life took a turn when in his early twenties Dave walked into the aerial agricultural office in Moree and met Julie who was running the office of her family’s business. Dave was one of the youngest pilots to graduate to turbine aircraft when they were introduced into Australia during the early 1990s and during his career he logged around 10,000 hours, predominantly in aerial application, and continued to study throughout his aviation career, attaining an Air Transport Pilots Licence, a Command Instrument Rating and won a scholarship to study a Masters of Aviation at Newcastle University. With the arrival of their second child, Dave and Julie moved onto the family farm at Forbes where he continued to fly their AT502 while managing the farm. Then he progressed from ag pilot to business owner, continually broadening his outlook from flying to business management. When the opportunity to buy Rebel Ag was presented to them in 2011, the family moved to Trangie in central NSW. Firebombing became a core part of the business. As with farming, Dave applied a methodical approach to Rebel Ag, which served local clients and the wider community through firebombing. Blackie’s true passion in life was aviation - he lived it and breathed it. He used to say he should try to get a hobby like golf or fishing, however aviation always got in the way because it wasn’t just his profession - it was all he wanted to do. He had trained as a firebomber about 18 years ago with Aerotech in South Australia and gained his early experience on campaigns in Coonabarabran and Cooma. While ag flying, Dave had always maintained a hand in firebombing and bought an AT802 in 2011 to be utilised on spraying and fires. Dave believed that firebombing was a growth area that offered better utilisation of the aircraft. After an enormous amount of preparatory work on the tender, it was a great achievement to win a NAFC contract for NSW. Dave was keen to expand Rebel Ag and to have enough turbine aircraft available to service agricultural clients and the NSW RFS and to be able to utilize those assets between the two as demand dictated. For an ag pilot, used to flying in calm conditions (albeit very low to the ground), firebombing work offers a stark contrast. “You pack your bag and off you go. You are working in hot and windy conditions in unfamiliar areas. You might be on a fire at Griffith and then across to Jindabyne and finish up at Cooma. You never know where or which other pilot’s you’re going to be with and that was a part of the excitement for Blackie, no day was ever the same.” says Julie. “I appreciate the support and comfort shown by the RFS, particularly when dealing with (Chaplain) Ian Spall,

Rebel Ag is dedicated to carry on Dave’s legacy and continue on the path he laid out. We knew what his big picture plan was and that’s what we’re working towards today.” David was well regarded throughout the industry and had served in a leadership role as a director of the Aerial Agricultural Association of Australia. He achieved a lot in his 43 years, but it is his character, humour, personality and passion that made him so loved.

It’s time to say good-bye Aero Engines announces closure by Otis Perera It has been a long journey, one that began in 1955. Eight mechanics that were co-workers purchased a company named Air Parts and formed Aero-Engines Inc. In 1961, they moved the company from Glendale, California to its present day location in Los Angeles. My journey began when I started working for the company in October 1971. At that time, there were six original owners remaining: Elvin McCann, Nickolas C. Mangel, Vernon Trueman, Paul Mangel, Gilbert Rivera and Narciso Monge. Though I did not have hardly any mechanical experience, those guys were willing to hire and train me in all the different aspects of overhauling radial engines; and so they did. Around the same time that I started, other individuals came onboard

to form the nucleus of what would be the next generation of owners. Nickolas P. Mangel had started in 1969, followed by Ed Stanwood, Robert Rivera, David Bowerman, myself, Tony Ortega, William Acosta and Bill McCann who arrived in 1978. In 1980, we became junior partners in the company, then became owners in 1990. This journey has taken us on a long ride, meeting a lot of interesting people, befriending many and providing service to customers across the continental USA and worldwide too numerous to count. But after the retirement on some partners, the passing of three others, it is time to say goodbye and begin a new chapter in our lives. We will be closing the doors of Aero-Engines at 3:20 P.M., Friday August 29, 2014 for the last time. We will take the month of September to prepare for the auction of equipment, engines, accessories, tooling, etc. The auction will be held by Starman Bros. on the weekend of October 4 & 5, 2014. Part 6 by Bill Lavender In last month’s edition, Theunis and I had visited Mitch and Lyn Spall at Natal Aerial Spray and Tony Hartwanger of AgSprayers. My driver, Theunis, dropped me off at Orsmond Aerial in Bethlehem and Ret, Julie (Ret’s wife) and I flew in Orsmond Aviation’s V35B Bonanza down to Plettenberg Bay on the Indian Ocean for a night of R&R. From there, we flew to Caledon to meet with Tony and then departed there for Stellenbosch to visit with Ret’s sister and her family. The following day, Lourens Kritzinger of Ag Aviation Africa, the southern Africa Air Tractor dealer, picked me up at the Stellenbosch airport and drove me to the wharf area of Cape Town for lunch. Here, I met Louren’s son Matt, who is also a part of Ag Aviation Africa. Lourens Kritzinger started flying in 1973. However, the fuel crisis hit South Africa during that time and it was 1977 before he earned his Commercial Pilot’s license. Finally, he landed a job flying ag in a Pawnee for Boland Air Sprayers in Malmesbury on the Western Cape. By then, Lourens held a degree in mechanical engineering. After two years with Boland

Air Sprayers, Lourens moved on to fly a year for Lugkor in a 450 HP B-Model AgCat and a 300 HP Ag-Wagon. In 1980, Lourens bought a flying service from Frank Williams and changed its name to Trans Oranje Lugspuit Diens (English translation, Trans Orange Aerial Application). Lourens’ mother suggested the name Trans Orange because the operation would be flying in both the Free State and the Western Cape. In doing so, the aircraft had to

repetitively cross the Orange River, thus the name Trans Orange. Lourens operated an Ag-Wagon, Ag-Husky and Ag-Truck, along with a Snow Thrush. He sold the company in 2002 and two years later bought it back with a replaced fleet of ag-aircraft that included a Pawnee Brave, Ag-Cat and AT-502. After five years, Lorens added an AT-602 to the fleet. It was in 2009, while visiting the Air Tractor factory and having the AT-502’s

decided to sell the spraying service and focus exclusively on servicing operators in South Africa. He sold the spraying business part of Ag Aviation Africa in August 2013 to Jaco du Toit of Krokidilkraal Farming Trust whom also owns Tru North Aviation. At that time, Tru North Aviation operated three AT401s. It added Lourens’s ag-aircraft to its fleet, as well as Ag Aviation Africa’s farmer customers. Shortly thereafter, Tru North Aviation ordered two additional AT-402Bs from Ag Aviation Africa. Tru North Aviation operates from three bases in Hoopstadt and the Free State province of South Africa. Says Matt about the AT-402B, “One of our recent sales of a 402B with a -15 engine is being flown by 67-year old Frik Grobbelaar. During his first month with the new 402, he covered 23,000 hectares (58,834 acres) in 29 consecutive days. When you consider the number of hectares and pilot’s age, that in itself speaks volumes about the efficiency of the 402 with a -15. It must be some sort of a record here in Africa”. Matt’s wife, Xani, also works with Ag Aviation Africa in the marketing side. Ag Aviation Africa has a hangar / warehouse in Parys, Free State and administrative offices in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth on the Eastern Cape coast. Also at the Parys, Free State airport, the company has an office with an apartment for customers to use. Ag Aviation Africa has outsource arrangements with local companies to handle specialized needs for its customers. 208 Aviation in Wonderboom, about 50 miles north of Johannesburg, takes care of turbine engine and airframe servicing. This company has the ability

to service customers in the field, too. Propeller Centre in Wonderboom provides propeller support. Hennie Viviers from Viviers Aviation, is Ag Aviation Africa’s GPS provider for AgNav GPS systems and aircraft electrical support. Greystones Aviation in Durban provides fuel control unit support for the PT6A engine. Although Ag Aviation Africa is able to meet all the maintenance needs of its Air Tractor customers, Lourens has the philosophy that, “It is better to pay the bank than the mechanic.” In other words, maintaining relatively new ag-aircraft is more cost effective than patching on older ones. Long range, Ag Aviation Africa has a vision that spares will be set up in kiosks throughout Africa. This would make distribution much simpler and more responsive to its customers AOG needs. Lourens plans to establish a route visiting existing customers and potential new ones on a regular basis, taking orders and helping the customer plan for upcoming needs. Initially, this long range plan will

involve ten companies and will expand as the concept becomes more established. My time with Lourens and Matt was very short. We spent most of the day, either dining or visiting in the local shopping mall bar, waiting on my departure flight back to the U.S.A as my whirlwind excursion through South Africa was coming to a close. For ten days I had visited with numerous operators that I have written about in the past editions of AgAir Update. I am indebted to their kind hospitality. I am especially grateful to the Orsmonds who welcomed me into their home for the second time in nearly 20 years. South Africa is a very beautiful and different country from the rest of the world. It has its internal problems, as do most countries. However, it seems to hold true wherever I travel that ag-pilots are of a brotherhood where it seems we all have similar challenges, likes and dislikes. As a rule, all are early to rise, work hard the whole day and enjoy life doing what they like the most, flying ag.

Balancing act Ag flying is a business that requires a level of dedication that most other occupations never approach. It’s a way of living as much as a way to make a living. When the lawn needs to be mowed, the kid has ball practice, the in-laws are in town or whatever else comes up the nine to five folks have time for, ag pilots most often than not are in the cockpit or at least at the airport. Balancing family and friends, chores and obligations is a requirement that takes prioritization and some scheduling skill. Most ag pilots I know generally have a half dozen or so irons in the fire, but when the season is in high gear everything else takes a back seat. Distractions come in many shapes and forms but worrying about the weeds in the flower bed is something that no ag pilot needs to be concerning himself with while flying a high dollar, heavily loaded aircraft low to the ground. During the busy season, an ag pilot’s life consists of eat, sleep and work. We usually get plenty of work, it’s the food and sleep that we get behind on. Getting enough rest is always a concern and difficult to do at times. We burn lots of energy and require lots of food; ‘good’ food as much as possible. I believe ag pilots might be some of the biggest consumers of junk food in the world. One of the funniest things I ever saw was a pilot who had a Twinkie sticking out of his mouth on almost every take off. I load up on peanut butter and honey sandwiches and have shoved the throttle forward many times with half a sandwich clenched in my teeth. You have to eat on the fly in this business!

Ag pilots are also guys who have a certain level of an adrenaline addiction. We are risk takers by design, though our training and professionalism (hopefully) keeps that part of ourselves in check with calculation and good decision making. Off duty recreation however doesn’t always have the same guidelines. I know guys who race cars, motorcycles, ride in rodeos and sky dive. Thrilling hobbies that keep the heart rate up and the taste of challenge fresh. Balancing the risks in our off duty adventures is just as important as doing so in our work. An injury will ground a pilot quick. It would be tough to sit on the bench with your arm or leg in a cast while watching the other guys roar around getting the work done. Not only will they

have to pick up your slack, or the boss might have to bring in another pilot, but it will certainly put a big dent in your bank account. I’m definitely not saying anything negative about having fun and raising a little dust on your off time. Just keep in mind that hurt pilots don’t make any money. This business is dangerous enough, we’re already tempting fate just by doing what we do for a living. Be careful about increasing the odds on the other side of the scale. Just as much as our work and our off duty recreation requires balance, so do the chores we have to keep up on. There always seems to be something that needs to be done around the house or to some of the machines we own. I try to put off as much as I can during the busy season and work to get as much done as possible around the old homestead when the flying work is slow. Raking and digging, fences, chainsawing, critters, new projects, etc.... The list can go on and on and I’m sure most of you can relate. I have to keep an eye on my wife during the busy season because it wouldn’t be a surprise to find her out in the pasture running the chainsaw in shorts and flip flops. beyond measure. Somebody to prop you up when you need it or maybe even spool you down when necessary is something that completes everything I mentioned above. Of course, there are instances when the opposite happens and I’ve had experience on that side of the equation as well. If a guy is dealing with personal issues, especially when it comes to issues of the heart, his mind will be tangled with enough wire to keep him mentally bound up. Sometimes a guy has to make tough choices. That’s all I can say about that one. Lastly keep your finances in order. Keep your balance, balanced. Other than romantic issues, financial pressure can be one of the most dangerous distractions a person can deal with. Americans have a bad habit of spending money before its made. Stay well within your means. Having money in the bank is as good as, well, having money in the bank. Life is a balancing act. Every aspect of what we do depends on the balance of everything else. As ag pilots, we have a job that we love and a lifestyle that many would envy. Keeping everything as balanced as possible helps to make the job just that much better. Fly well and stay safe!
