Slow Down

Caution warnings are worth repeating. Safety should be your mantra and obsession. Safety does not come for free.

Statistically, the 2020 season started off with a relatively a low number of fatality accidents in the U.S. Now, as of the end of June, the industry has had three fatalities and no less than one very serious accident. In the early beginning of this year’s season, an ag-pilot in Texas flew into the sun blinding him before hitting a tree. The aircraft crashed and the pilot lost his life. To add to the tragedy, the pilot survived for a few days before succumbing to his burn injuries.

The second fatality occurred in Alabama.

It seems that this particular accident was also completely avoidable, as was the one flying into the sun in Texas. First, I must offer a disclaimer that I have not spoken with the family or eye witnesses to the accident. However, I trust my sources enough to comment on this accident.

The pilot had completed the application and was returning to the airstrip when he made the fatal decision to conduct a low level fly-by with an abrupt pull up at the end. My understanding is the pilot was highly experienced with 10s of thousands of hours. The result of the pull up was a stall/spin into the ground in front of loved ones.

Why does this continue to happen? I can’t pass judgment, as like every ag-pilot I know at one time or another has made the impressive fly-by with a radical turn around at the end. You feel good after completing a successful application, the plane is flying great and you believe you are at the top of your game. We all know these feelings. It is the absolute worst time to demonstrate your excellent flying abilities that for this pilot were not good enough. He didn’t have to die.

The third, and hopefully the last fatality of the season, was for a North Carolina helicopter pilot when his R66 turbine helicopter encountered powerlines. If an ag-pilot has flown enough years and hours, sooner or later, he flies into a wire.

Often, it is survivable, but too often it is not. Wires can be tricky; hard to see or even harder to judge their height and position. I once had an operator that I was helping catch up tell me, “Fly the field as well as the farmer planted it.” Simple, but truthful words. If the farmer insists on planting under and around power lines, then he needs to accept the application won’t be the best. An applicator needs to give powerlines a wide breadth breadth.

In almost all cases, survivability in ag-flying falls upon the pilot.

Although an Arkansas pilot survived a crash in June, his aircraft became a ball of aluminum.

I’m told he was cut out of the plane and “walked away”. I don’t know the extent of his injuries, but from my own experience, I know his shoulder harness and lap belt induced severe bruising.

And, I’m confident his helmet played a major role in his survival. There is a lot of inertia in an ag-plane traveling well over 100 MPH in any configuration. When it comes to an abrupt halt, so do all the internal organs of the pilot, along with straps pressing hard against the body to almost the degree of an impact into the cockpit components.

Our industry has the best possible survival equipment for the job we do; shoulder harnesses, extra wide seat belts, roll cage cockpits capable of withstanding high G loads, break away cockpit doors and in some aircraft airbag seat belts. But, an aircraft can only do so much to save your life.

It is important you enhance these features with

first and foremost a helmet, Nomex clothing and a sense of professionalism that puts safety first. I know protective clothing is hot, heavy and burdensome, but a fire is hotter and the dashboard slammed into your face is much more burdensome than a helmet.

In almost all cases, survivability in ag-flying falls upon the pilot. Sure, there are instances where an accident occurs that is completely out of the pilot’s control; no matter what he does his fate is sealed. This is where dependence on the plane’s safety features help, but are not guaranteed. Usually, this happens due to a mechanical issue, or weather. Even with weather, the pilot is still in control to a great degree with his decision abilities. And, the same could be said about the airworthiness of the aircraft. Junk ag-planes will hurt you.

I’ll get off my soap box. I know you hear about safety every day you fly and even days you don’t. Caution warnings are worth repeating. Safety should be your mantra and obsession.

Safety does not come for free. The safety equipment cost and to be safe takes time. However, if you are in this game for the long haul, safety will always be less expensive than the alternatives. Slow down, be safe and live.

In closing, all of us at AgAir Update extend our sincerest condolences to the grieving families of those pilots lost this year and all the years before 2020, along with hoping for a speedy recovery for the pilot “that walked away”.

My comments about these four accidents in no way was judgmental of the pilots. Instead, I’m hoping their ill-fate will somehow help other ag-pilots avoid the same.

Operation SAFE Dear Bill; Although the wind was a little breezy, the Operation S.A.F.E. clinic held at Mattoon, Illinois June 1, turned out to be a great success. We had nine aircraft, eight airplanes and one helicopter. There were 22 trips across the track.

I’d like to thank all that were able to attend the fly-in and to all of those that helped. A special thanks goes to Dominique Youakim for putting up with all of us, Matt Gill and Scott Bretthauer for their knowledge and abilities, Syngenta for all the manual labor and the good food and everyone else that lent a helping hand.

hat does a Brazilian ag operator do, who has more than forty-five years of ag-flying experience, when he looks out his office window and sees an impressive line-up

of 13 Ipanemas? His experience in business tells him the Ipanemas have served him well. However, maybe he asks, “Is there another ag-aircraft option that may work well with the Ipanema fleet?”

Aviação Agrícola Alagoana, Ltda was founded in 1976. In 1979, it was bought out by husband and wife team, Gregory and Deta Smith. Based in Rio Largo, Alagoas, a northeastern state in Brazil near the coast (Mareió), Alagoana decided in 2019 it was time to expand its horizons with the purchase of a new AT-402B from AeroGlobo Aeronaves based in Botucatu, SP, a Lane Aviation Air Tractor representative.

The road to success for Gregory and Deta Smith started small. Gregory was born in Porto Alegre of British parents. At 13, Gregory moved with his parents back to England in 1966. In 1970, he returned to Brazil and joined ARGS (Aeroclube do Rio Grande do Sul) to do his pilot training and also worked as a flight instructor there until 1973.

After ARGS, he joined Varig Airlines and flew the Boeing 707. At the time, Gregory was not married.

Not long after joining Varig, the economicallystressed airline laid off unmarried pilots in 1975.

What would be a big disappointment for any young airline pilot, Gregory turned into an opportunity; He attended CAVAG in Sorocaba in 1976 at 23 years old looking toward a new career flying ag-aircraft. While at CAVAG, he logged 40 training hours in 45 days, then located to Pelotas where he flew his first season on rice. That agaviation company, Ipanema Aviação Agrícola had some EMB 200 Ipanemas with 260 BHP engines outfitted with fixed props and also a fleet of brand new EMB 201s.

Not too long after his first season, Gregory was asked to ferry an Ipanema to Parana State. While there, he met with a friend who was starting a company in Mareió, Alagoas in partnership with Peter Fitzgerald, an American from Hawaii. In the meantime, Gregory found a job in Recife flying a EMB 201 spraying an experimental biological metarhizium anisopliae, a fungus that is applied

by air and becomes a parasite that controls insects.

From there, he was invited by Fitzgerald to join his company, as it had just bought a second EMB 201A. Gregory decided not to return to Rio Grande do Sul and instead stayed year round in the Mareió region. Later in 1978, Deta and he got married and he flew in Mareió, Alagoas in the winter and Cuiabá in the summer.

In 1979, Gregory and Deta bought Aviação Agrícola Alagoana, flying the summers in Rio Grande do Sul and the winters in Alagoas and neighboring states. They started buying an Ipanema each year until 1985 when the company had five. With five ag aircraft to maintain, the Smiths decided to start a maintenance company exclusively for their aircraft. The company, MANAL (Manutenção Alagoana de Aeronaves Ltda.) quickly earned a trusted reputation with local aviators. With no other maintenance company nearby, MANAL became a respected maintenance facility for both Alagoana’s aircraft and general aviation aircraft. Today, MANAL is certified to service a wide variety of fixed and rotary wing aircraft, including King Air turboprops, Citation jets and several model helicopters. It is a major maintenance center for airframes, turboprop and piston engines, including hot section inspections (HSI) for turboprops. When a repair is needed on the turboprop engine, it is sent to Dallas Airmotive or Pratt & Whitney Canada in Brazil. A piston engine can be overhauled at MANAL’s facility back to zero time before overhaul (TBO).

In 1996, Gregory decided Alagoana would be a much more efficient operation if he retired from active ag-flying and focused on running the company, including MANAL. He didn’t have to wait long before his son, Nicholas John Smith, joined him in 2000. ➤ agairupdate.com | A 13

The original Aviação Agrícola Alagoana grass airstrip was rented from a cane mill. Later, another hangar was added to the existing hangar.

Eventually, Alagoanas rebuilt the 1,000-meter airstrip that is now five kilometers from the Mareió International Airport and inside its airspace. Alagoanas aircraft and other aircraft landing at the airstrip must maintain radio contact with Mareió International Airport while in its airspace.

The main crop that Alagoana treats in the Alagoas and neighboring states is sugar cane.

When Nicholas started with Alagoana, many customers were pushing for lower prices for spraying. Gregory and Nicholas decided that it would be better for Alagoana’s continued success to maintain its pricing and keep the best customers. Nicholas’ job was to convince customers who had left to return, which he was successful at doing.

In 2007, Gregory and Nicholas opened a second base in Iturama, Minas Gerais, the Triangulo Mineiro region. Here not only is sugar cane a major crop, but also soybeans, grain, cotton and rice are treated, adding a diversity of crops for Alagoana. This created two seasons for the company. One season in Iturama that starts in September and ends in March. The second season in Alagoana and neighboring states starts in April and ends in September. There is very little down time between seasons.

In Alagoana and neighboring states, one Ipanema typically services three to four clients.

However, in the Iturama region where farms are much larger, it takes three to four Ipanemas to service one client. Today, Alagoana operates 13 Ipanemas from year models 1979 through 2018 and one new AT-402B Air Tractor. The aircraft are operated from about 30 satellite airstrips in Alagoana and neighboring states and another 10 airstrips in the Iturama region. Most applications are made within five kilometers of an airstrip.

The typical length of these airstrips is 1,000 meters.

All 13 Ipanemas are ethanol-powered. The later models came from the factory with ethanolpowered engines. The older models were converted to ethanol with Embraer conversions.

The additional maintenance of ethanol power is offset by the fuel cost savings. In February 2020, the price of ethanol in the Alagoana region was from $3.50-$5.50 reais per liter. This compares to av-gas costing about $11 reais per liter. Even considering an increase of nearly 50% in fuel consumption with an ethanol-powered engine, it is about 40% less expensive per hour to operate.

A standard operating practice for all of Alagoana’s Ipanema pilots is to perform a fuel density check. This is done at the start of each day.

The value of the check must be 0.800. Normally, there is not a fuel density issue, but it is a required check.

In addition to its large ag-aircraft fleet, Alagoana uses about 15 ground vehicles to service the fleet. The company has up to 70 employees including 14 pilots during most of the year. Each employee receives 60 vacation days to rest.

In 2017, Alagoana adopted a policy where it would no longer operate an ag-plane for more than 20 years. Once an Ipanema reaches its 20th year, it is replaced with a newer aircraft. In 2020, this was the AT-402B bought from AeroGlobo. If the AT-402B performs as expected, another Air Tractor will be added to the fleet, possibly an Air Tractor 502XP. The new AT-402B was the first turboprop ag-plane to be operated in the state of Alagoas.

Nicholas handled the acquisition of the new Air Tractor from purchase agreement to financing to delivery. Initially, there were bureaucratic problems with financing. Nicholas then turned to AeroGlobo for its expert assistance. From the application for financing to delivery from the U.S. was a very short 34 days.

Two pilots were trained to fly the new Air Tractor at AeroGlobo’s Botucatu Training Center.

has a Level 5 flight simulator, the only simulator that accurately replicates flight conditions, both in normal and emergency procedures for Air Tractors. One Alagoana pilot will fly the Air Tractor in Iturama and the other pilot will fly it in Alagoas.

Ninety percent of Alagoana’s applications are over sugar cane. The Ipanemas use mostly spray nozzles for 30 l/ha and also Micronairs for applications. The primary application is liquid fertilizer with micro-nutrients added. Liquid fertilizer is preferred over dry granulated fertilizer because of better absorption through the leaf compared to dry fertilizers being absorbed through the soil.

Applications start with liquid fertilizer, followed later with a fungicide mixed with an insecticide, if needed. The last application, for a total of three in a sugar cane growing season, is a ripener.

Glyphosate is applied to force the sugar cane to ripen sooner causing the level of sugar content in the plant to increase over a normal ripening.

Although applications will vary for fungicide and insecticide applications, most of the sugar cane

will receive the fertilizer and ripener applications.

The sugar cane is cut back each year and regrows next year’s crop. This cycle of cut and regrowth can occur for six to ten years before the sugar cane has to be replanted. Yields can be from 70-110 tons/ha (30 to 50 tons/ac), depending on the amount of science the grower uses.

Growers that go to the expense of using the latest technology to raise the sugar cane expect a 40-50% yield increase over growers who do not use technology.

Pratt & Whitney Opens OEM Facility in Brazil

Recently, the AgAir Update Brasil team visited the new Pratt & Whitney do Brasil facility in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. We were hosted by the company’s general manager, Renato Rafael, along with Human Resources Manager, Carlos Nascimento.

Renato Rafael joined the Pratt & Whitney family three years ago after almost 15 years at Embraer working with startups and operations of Maintenance and Repair Operations (MRO).

Renato has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA in Business Administration with 27 years of experience in aviation, mainly as head of MRO. Pratt & Whitney has made a substantial investment in Brazil to establish an Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) facility spending $24 million USDs to accomplish this feat. Pratt & Whitney’s Brazilian OEM has the ability to completely overhaul all models PT6A, PW200 and eventually PT6C engines. The PT6A engine is used in agricultural aircraft, as well as several models

of general aviation aircraft. The PT6C engine is typically used in medium-class helicopters with a shaft horsepower range of 1,600 to 2,000 SHP. The PW200 is a turboprop engine for light-twin helicopters with 500-700 SHP. An Open House for the new 1,800-square meter facility was held last December 10 with Pratt & Whitney Canada’s president, Maria Della Posta and other dignitaries attending. Included in the $24 million USD investment is a $4 million USD engine test cell built by CEL Aerospace Group. According to Aviation Week magazine, “CEL is a world leader in test equipment for aircraft engines; fixed and rotary wings, business and airline jets, as well as APUs (Auxiliary Power Units) for commercial and military applications. High technology engineering forms the heart of CEL with a focus on innovative design.”

Montreal, Canada can monitor an engine during testing, as well as control the engine remotely.

The engine test cell’s control room is separate from where the engine is mounted for safety and noise abatement reasons. All recorded data from engine tests are stored on a server in Montreal.

The time it takes to test an engine, if all is good, is approximately two days; a ½ day to mount the engine, one day of 8-12 hours of operating the engine and another ½ day to remove the engine from the engine test cell’s mounts.

From “clean sheet” (a reference to completion of drawing the building blueprints) to movein, required only an amazing 10 months, from February to December 2019. During this time, all tooling, work stations, two automated storage and retrieval solutions (ASRS) units, overhead engine transport system and administration offices that include individual training and meeting offices were constructed and assembled. Every component of the Belo Horizonte facility is new, from tooling to tool boxes.

Pratt & Whitney do Brasil has a long-term land lease from a partner company, IAS (Indústria de Aviação e Serviços), that is also located on the property with its own buildings and maintenance structures. Pratt & Whitney do Brasil, as part of its collaboration with IAS, outsources specific services to it, such as cleaning of parts, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and accessories repairs.

Pratt & Whitney Canada has approximately 10,000 employees worldwide (2020). Currently, there are 60 Pratt & Whitney do Brasil employees.

Renato anticipates an additional 50 employees will be working at the Belo Horizonte facility at the peak of capacity. For field operations

and representation, Marcelo Feitosa is based in Goianas, Goias, which is relatively, centrally located in the agricultural aviation sector of Brazil.

From there, Marcelo can visit with ag-operations for personalized, firsthand service.

Very sophisticated automated storage and retrieval solutions (ASRS) “elevators” manufactured by the Switzerland-based Kardex Remstar are vertical lift carousels used to organize and store tooling and parts.

The tooling elevator has 52 shelves that rotate vertically, while the parts elevator has 42 shelves. The operator enters a tooling or part number into the control unit and the correct shelf rotates to the door opening. The units were imported from Germany at the cost of $100,000 USDs.

Pilot’s Lounge Ponderings

People have asked me what my favorite kind of flying is, and my stock answer is “Why, ALL of it!”

Before I became a full-time ag pilot, I used to go to Iowa for a couple months in the summer to fly for Boyd Morgan and then go back to being a corporate pilot/CFI/delivery pilot/FBO coffee repository for the rest of the year. The corporate side gave me a lot of chances to see new places and meet new people, which is one of the reasons I put up with it as long as I did. Before long, I knew the birthdays of the FBO girls at Lakefront, the bartenders at the W in midtown Atlanta knew me by name, (and how to make a pretty good sazerac) and I spent enough time in Destin to qualify for residency.

I had one pretty good gig flying for a couple of guys who made a pile of money in pharmaceutical sales, and one day I had to take the wife of one of the owners up to Little Rock, Arkansas for a few hours. Since it was an out and back, and I really didn’t know how long my passenger would be gone, I decided against grabbing a rental car and going to see my good friend and mentor Stan Ferguson. Instead, I planned to head to the pilot’s lounge to catnap and catch up on some reading.

When I walked in, there were two people also playing the waiting game. They were both wearing black slacks and brilliant white shirts. The gold embroidery on their epaulets positively lit up the room. The two could have looked like Before and After. The captain was older and looked as if he could have been sent by Central Casting to fill the role of professional pilot. The first officer was younger, perhaps in his mid 20’s. Clean-cut, polite, and quiet. I felt a little shabby by comparison in my scuffed boots, worn jeans, pearl snap shirt with a frayed collar, and Southern Aire hat. I took my styrofoam cup of coffee and settled in a chair, then

got on my iPad to see what ForeFlight had to say about my trip home.

Around this time, the captain looked over at me, and we started making small talk. He asked what I was flying, and I told him that I was flying a Cirrus. He asked some questions about it, then we talked a little about the jet he and his partner were flying. After that, he asked where I got my hat. I told him my buddy Stan gave it to me. Then he asked me if I was “one of those crop duster pilots.”

I’ve never been ashamed of what I do, so I looked him in the eye and said, “Yes sir, I am.”

Now friends, when I have these conversations, they usually follow one of two predictable patterns. Pattern (1) goes something like this: “My girlfriend’s grandmother’s son’s cousin knew a guy who was a crop duster and he died of stuff he caught being around all those chemicals.” Pattern (2) usually sounds like: “Man, that’s cool. I grew up in the delta/midwest/etc and I loved watching them fly. You guys do some crazy stuff, man!”

Turns out Eddie Epaulets was a Pattern (1) guy. When I said that I was indeed an aerial applicator, his reaction made me wonder if I should have told him I had leprosy instead. He started reciting a litany of experiences with ag pilots not using radios, or not flying the same traffic pattern as everyone else, and various other sins for which I was guilty by association. The word cowboy invariably came out a few times. After he vented, he started giving me career advice. I’m sure he meant well. He started by saying I needed to go and get my multi, and then I could maybe one day get a job in a jet. He made sure to tell me that unless I got a good bit of multi turbine time, I’d never get a job at an airline.

After that, I may have mentioned in passing that I also flew King Airs, and never really had any airline aspirations, but I never ruled anything out. I remained cordial, and he and I talked a while more about flying, football, and women until his passengers showed up and they left. Now I certainly don’t want to give the impression that this gentleman was a jerk, or anything like that at all. I think that the most likely explanation is that he had just never had a positive exchange with someone from our industry, or if he did the positives were outweighed by the negatives.

People have asked me what my favorite kind of flying is, and my stock answer is “Why, ALL of it!” I love race-tracking my 402 around an 80 on a Nebraska evening. I love being in the backseat of a tube-and-fabric taildragger teaching the finer points of three point landings or four point rolls. I get a rush hand-flying an approach to minimums in a Caravan on those long Alaskan winter nights. Gliding is a blast; just not in an Ag Cat. I’ve never understood looking down on another segment of aviation, but maybe that’s what people do when they don’t understand something. I bet I’d probably like flying a big jet, but I’m sure I’d miss landing on grass.

We are largely a very misunderstood and misrepresented aspect of aviation, and I think each of us has a part to play in being ambassadors for our industry. We have some of the best pilots the world has ever seen in our ranks, but in the minds of some our image is that of Randy Quaid in Independence Day. We’ll never change everyone’s minds, of course, but I think it’s important that we try. I’m as guilty of having a temper as the next guy, but I’m trying to work on making sure that I portray ag aviation in a positive manner around town, in the air, and online. I have a friend of mine who is a preacher man back in Mississippi. He posted something on Facebook recently that resonated with me, but that I can also easily apply to our industry. He said that “Sometimes the best evangelism is simply telling people you’re a Christian and then not being a complete jerk.” Ain’t that something?

I know that there are many of us who came into ag flying from other parts of the aviation world, and many ag pilots have gone on to do great things in the 121 and 135 sectors, and also in various corporate flight departments. Many of us fly in the off season and interact with people at airports all over the country. These are great opportunities to show people that we are a fun and proficient group. A lot of us work off of public airports, and that’s another way in which we can foster good relationships with our communities, by just being good neighbors.

The Problem with Lime

New Zealander Ken Simpson was very wellknown, as he had been aerial topdressing since September of 1952 and had many hours of lowlevel ag-flying experience. Ken was one of the very early New Zealand top dressing pilot pioneers. Ken was the 14th ag-pilot to be killed in New Zealand and the first to lose his life in a Fletcher FU-24.

Although manufactured in the U.S., none of the FU-24 aircraft were certified there, at least not for many years later. Instead, they were flight-tested by a New Zealand pilot and issued New Zealand airworthiness certificates. In the minds of some of us, including myself who flew the early versions, the test-flying procedure seemed to be deficient in some respects.

On October 16, 1956, Ken and his loaderdriver began working on a lime job shortly after lunchtime. The airstrip was about four nautical miles east of the small village of Mananui and a few miles south of Taumarunui. The terrain in the spreading area consists of fairly steep hill-faces and patches of native bush with some rather solid trees. The wind conditions in the early part of the

morning is often calm with patches of fog, but by midday there is always some wind that is often variable amongst the hill country.

Ken took off in his FU-24 on the day’s ninth sortie and at 13:40 crashed the aircraft. The accident investigator calculated the take-off payload must have been about 14 cwt (712 kg).

Before the crash, the aircraft was seen to be approaching the sowing area at low-level. Lime was seen to be leaving the hopper outlet for a few seconds and then the flow stopped. The aircraft was seen to be maneuvering at low-level within a narrow gully. It was then seen to enter a turn during which it struck a tree and crashed inverted in a group of trees. The impact was taken by the cabin area and Ken was killed instantly. Fire erupted and the aircraft was destroyed.

The investigator said that he found evidence of compacted lime present from previous flights and there was no doubt that a serious overload had happened. There was no evidence of an engine or structural failure. He also commented that a change in wind conditions was likely, leading to a loss ➤

of performance with no safety margin remaining.

With the hopper size of the early model FU-24, when 750 kg of super phosphate fertilizer was loaded, the hopper was full and could be observed by the loader driver as he filled the aircraft. But, lime is denser than super and the level of 750 kg would be well below full.

The aerial spreading of any product legally requires that 80% of the weight/mass must be able to be jettisoned within five seconds. After the advent of (dry) granulated superphosphate this was no longer a problem. But a product made by grinding limestone has proved to be a dangerous situation due to very poor flow factors with hoppers that are not fitted with some form of agitator in order to maintain a reliable rate of flow.

The FU-24’s hopper design was a concave shape from top to the bottom outlet. Lime products tend to form a bridge over the hopper outlet. When this happened, the only effective way to take the weight off the compacted material was to push the nose down (partial bunting) to remove the “G” loading to zero, or less, then pull the stick back to avoid hitting the ground, trees or wires. When flying at low-level, the process is very uncomfortable and rather dangerous in several ways.

Mounted behind the pilot’s seat, the front of the hopper had a small clear window. The pilot had to turn his head around to face backwards in order to try and read the level of the product. It was very difficult to see clearly through the window to check the load. In my experience, the window was far too small and became dirty usually after the first load.

The only sure method of checking the payload was for the pilot before takeoff to undo his harness and climb onto the wing in order to look down into the hopper. It was also difficult for the loader driver

to check unless he climbed out of his truck cab onto the ground, then climb up onto the wing and advised the pilot.

The Fletcher FU-24 cockpit ergonomics were also quite awful. I soon discovered this when I flew them after having become used to the fine Cessna C-180 in its ag configuration. For some strange reason, the pilot’s seat was mounted in the centre of the quite wide cockpit. This meant that you had to look over the nose-cowl from the middle. This left no space on the right or left side to carry your loader-driver or a farmer.

The hopper dump lever was placed well over to the left. Your arm angle was awkward and it was very difficult to operate the lever day after day with your left arm. When hauling lumpy chunks of damp lime, it was a nightmare trying to force the congealed mess through the manual hopper doors at the same time having to “bunt” the aircraft nose down at low airspeeds and with almost nil climb performance. The entire job could become utterly ludicrous and highly dangerous. Fatigue gradually wore one out and many of us grew to dislike the horrible machine.

The whole job of dealing with compacted lime was very dangerous without some form of agitator or aircraft weighing system. However in those early years, 99% of us persisted in trying to safely spread lime from hoppers which were not fitted with proper agitators. Why the New Zealand Civil Aviation officers, or company management, did not take very strong steps to ban the use of lime, or fit agitators, is a mystery to me; even after all these years and avoidable deaths, cockpit fires and injuries.

I experienced many battles with clogged lime in hoppers and survived by never flying into rising terrain. Instead, I used a higher airspeed and a sowing direction across the lie of the land. I also always landed with the hopper doors open, in the hope that shock and vibration might clear the inside of the hopper, which it often did not.

If only back in 1955 and 1956, some official with some brains and guts had grounded the fleet of FU-24s and called a working meeting and said, “OK chaps. Let’s not leave this room until we decide on how we are going to convert this heap of junk into a decent ag-flying machine we can be proud to fly.”

The 100th anniversary of aerial application is around the corner, and NAAA is looking for your participation. Do you have great photos, videos or memories of aerial application that you’d like to share? For nearly a century, aerial application has played an important part of the aviation and agriculture industries. Now, NAAA invites you to share your favorite memories and photos for a chance to be featured in its 100th anniversary celebration materials, which will debut in 2021.

In 1921, in an experiment in Ohio, an airplane was used to spread lead arsenate dust over catalpa trees to kill sphinx moth larvae. Under the direction of the Ohio Department of Agriculture,

Lt. John A. Macready, a U.S. Army pilot, made the first aerial application with a modified Curtiss JN-6 “Super Jenny.” The government then utilized aerial application in the Southern states. In 1922, Curtiss biplanes were used to dust cotton fields near Tallulah, Louisiana, to control boll weevils. In 1923, Huff-Daland Dusters Inc.—the forerunner of Delta Air Lines—did the first commercial dusting of crops with its own specially built aircraft. Today, approximately 3,400 professional aerial application operators and pilots operate in the United States, and the agricultural aviation industry treats 127 million acres of cropland aerially each year. Aerial application accounts for 28% of the delivery of crop protection products in American agriculture.

Last month I promised AgAir Update readers I would introduce a true southern belle, a lady that could help with any of an aerial applicator’s insurance needs. I’m making good on that promise. That southern belle is none other than the gracious Mrs. Dorothy Kimmel of Kimmel Aviation Insurance, Inc. based in Greenwood, Mississippi.

Kimmel Aviation Insurance was formed by “Ms. Dorothy”, as so many of us fondly call her, in 1979. She operated from the Leflore Airport in Greenwood until 1996 when she moved her offices into town. Dorothy had been keeping a watchful eye on a particularly interesting building. When it was offered for sale she quickly took advantage of the opportunity. I noted upon entering the building, on a brass wall plaque, it was built in 1904 and served as the Greenwood City Hall, with jail and all. The plaque stated that the building was placed on the National Register of Historical Places, May 15, 1980. Now, with Kimmel Aviation Insurance as its tenant, the

building is nicely remodeled following the theme of the era, even with its own studio apartment upstairs.

When you call Kimmel Aviation Insurance about your insurance needs, you’ll most likely be greeted by Mary Ann Anderson. Mary Ann was been with Dorothy for nearly 20 years, answering the phone and checking policies, along with other administrative duties. and also farms. All four sons are within an hour’s drive time of Greenwood.

Kimmel Aviation Insurance is a full-service aviation insurance company. Policies to fit every need of the aerial applicator are available.

Industrial Aid, Pleasure and Business, National Hangar Program, Worker’s Compensation, Accidental Spill, Aerial Application, Airport Liability and Premises, Farmers, Owners and Growers, and Instruction and Rental are examples of coverages available. The ag av insurance policy is shopped from four markets provided by underwriters USAIG, Phoenix, AIG and Houston Casualty.

Two months before renewal, or for new clients, Kimmel Aviation Insurance will send an info form to acquire the latest information about the insured’s company. With that information, the agency will approach the markets and shop for the all-around best deal for the client.

Of course, most operators have hull and liability insurance coverage. The hull protects the value of the aircraft while in motion or on the ground. The liability protects the company from lawsuits, up to a set limit. However, there are other coverages available to the operator and different limits of coverage with different deductibles. It is Dorothy’s opinion that most operators don’t carry enough liability coverage.

This is especially true in instances where corn and Roundup are involved.

Comprehensive Chemical coverage (CC) includes any chemical except Tordon (Picaloram) in any form; or a defoliant or desiccant applied

in dust form; or any inorganic arsenic compound, except arsenic acid used in liquid spray form as a cotton desiccant or defoliant.

Restricted Chemical coverage (RC) includes any chemical except 2-4D, 2-4-5TP, MCPA, Banvel-D, Tordon or any other hormone herbicide, or any defoliant or desiccant applied in dust form.

If an aerial applicator applies Roundup or Rely, he needs to check with Kimmel Aviation Insurance to be sure the proper coverage for applying these products is in place. If an applicator applies Tordon (picaloram), he must have an additional endorsement.

There is additional insurance coverages available through Kimmel Aviation Insurance that each operator should discuss with one of their agents, making sure the appropriate coverage for his operation is in effect.

Farmers/Owners/Growers coverage will be found in the insured’s “Who’s Covered” section of the policy. This coverage will include any person or organization who is the grower of the property with whom the policyholder has agreed to conduct aerial applications. However, it will only cover the person or organization who is the grower of the property being treated for claims which result from the policyholder’s negligence.

It will not cover claims against the grower of the property for bodily injury and mental anguish made by any employee of the grower who is injured in the course of employment.

Crops Treated is also in the “Who’s Covered” section of the policy and will cover injury or damage to the property or crop intended to be treated resulting from the application of seeds or chemicals. It will not cover damage or injury caused by the failure of the chemical applied to function in the manner, or for the purpose intended or for which it was contracted.

Adjacent Fields coverage is surely a consideration for any operator. This coverage description is also found in the “Who’s Covered” section of the policy and will cover injury to property or crops owned by the person or organization for whom an applicator may be making an application adjacent to the crop being treated. It will not cover damage or injury caused by the failure of the chemical applied to function in the manner, or for the purpose intended or for which it was contracted. When considering a hull coverage deductible, in some cases an operator can pick a percentage of the hull coverage or a fixed amount. In the case of a turbine operator, for example, he might have to chose from either a 5% deductible ($500,000 aircraft would be $25,000) or he could elect to have a fixed deductible of $5,000, for instance. These are the kind of details to a policy that the operator depends upon for his agent to guide him in the right direction.

What about the PAASS program participation discount? AIG is offering to operators, who hold a certificate of completion (requires membership in NAAA) from a PAASS program, a five percent discount across the board on the operator’s premium with AIG. All employed pilots of the insured must hold this certificate.

All underwriters take into consideration that the insurance applicant has attended a PAASS program clinic. In some cases, such attendance may even determine if the operator can qualify for insurance. However, AIG’s discount for PAASS participation doesn’t necessarily mean it will offer the least expensive policy, or the best policy for the applicant.

Can a low or no-time ag pilot get insurance?

It is possible. Each case is examined by the underwriter and will have special criteria for the insured. In most instances, the applicant will be required to have at least 350 hours total time, commercial licenses and 50 hours of ag time, which can be acquired from one of the ag schools. Typically, chemical coverage is excluded,

meaning the applicant will have to build time with familiarization flights, or applying seed or fertilizer. The hull premium will most likely be in the 12-15% range and will only be for an aircraft in the $50,000-$60,000 value range. The new pilot will have to fly under the direct supervision of the operator. The deductible and premium will both be higher.

What about the new turbine pilot? For the most part, a pilot making the transition to the turbine aircraft can expect to be required to attend a familiarization course that involves flight time in a dual cockpit turbine powered aircraft, or completion of a simulator course. The simulator course seems to be the favorite of the insurance companies.

When asked what advice an ag aviation insurance agent could offer to the operator to minimize his liabilities, Ms. Dorothy replied, “Work to protect your history. Keep very good records, either notations about weather conditions on work orders, saved flight data logging from GPS units and written notations about any observations made while flying. For example, maybe a four-wheeler with a spray rig was working close by.” Documentation is the salvation of the operator. Don’t hesitate to immediately contact your agent when you suspect something may develop from an incident, whether it be a wire strike or a drift incident.

Dorothy Kimmel has been involved in ag aviation for most of her adult life. She understands needs of operators, being involved with an ag operation for more than 34 years.

She was president of the WNAAA in 1992, is the Mississippi Director for the WNAAA and actively serves on the NAAA Insurance Committee. She also is active with the WNAAA’s Nominating and Membership Committees and participates with the WNAAA Raffle and Scholarship programs.

There’s more to ag aviation insurance than issuing the policy. It takes a working knowledge of the industry with a sincere love for it. Wow! 2020 will definitely be a year to remember! As we are all struggling through these troubling times, I am proud to be a part of the ag aviation industry that is considered to be essential. Since our Chem-Man software is now online, my employees are all able to work remotely from home or in a separate office. It’s definitely different, but it all works out. I really miss having everyone together at the office (I’m a people person). We are being careful and as my dad always says, “As all things do, this will pass.”

masks, but most people already have one on. We feel that it’s as much a safety concern for yourself as everyone else.” Louisiana is a state that has been hit hard with major outbreaks. She said that she was thankful that they’re taking it as seriously as they are and need to be.

She said “The virus spreads so rapidly and the fact that you can be a carrier and be asymptomatic for up to two weeks makes it so difficult to stay ahead of the spread, despite the tireless efforts of our medical staff and first responders. We are continually washing hands, spraying and wiping down. It’s not a joke.”

I was proud to hear her say, “How thankful we are to have been online, because If we didn’t have Chem Man Online, the health and safety of our office staff and our workflow, being an essential mechanism of agriculture production, would have suffered.”

Washington state became well known for the first state to have recognized cases. With all of the negativity in our world, I have really enjoyed following Erin Morse on Facebook. Erin is the wife of Gavin Morse, owners of Gem Air, Inc. in Warden, Washington. Erin is such a positive figure and always seems to find a way to make you feel good about the whole situation. She often posts things like “Day 7 of the virus” and positive ways that her family is coping.

I talked to Erin about the situation for a good while. She said, “We were the epicenter for a little while. We were one of the first states to close down schools, businesses and have stay at home orders.“ The month of March really started

affecting the entire state first with the closing of schools and then everything else following.

Her outlook is to proceed with caution, nervous but optimistic, trusting but wise, encouraging to our neighbors and to be concerned.

She said as the closures started her and husband Gavin wondered about their own business and whether it would be a total lockdown or not. “We realized we were going to still be able to operate, but to do so we would have to comply with essential business orders.” She said you can’t just be “open”, you must have PPE, temperatures taken, social distancing, hand washing and masks.

“We are fortunate that we’re essential and outside a lot. We assigned everyone a vehicle and tried to create the flow of work so tasks are happening in separate parts of the airport as much as possible so we can be distant.” When it comes to their company, their motto is, “If you are sick don’t come to work.” If everyone in their small company got sick, it could really hurt the entire company.

“We wipe things down, use hand sanitizer, have regular hand washing intervals including when they get to work and before they go home for the day.” She mentioned some PPE was already in place, but now it’s harder to buy.

Erin and Gavin have two beautiful daughters, Maggie age 7 and Adi age 5. “In the beginning, a lot of things were unknown and felt big and heavy.

Gavin and I realized this is a historic thing. When our kids are older they’re going to remember this time. How we choose to respond will frame their experience and understanding. We wanted to make this positive as much as possible. So, we

tell our kids things like, ‘Isn’t this awesome? We’ve got extra family time!’”

“A friend gave us two little desks that we put in the office for the girls. We have worked to find fun ways to incorporate school work, paperwork and online assignments. Since we were unable to have a birthday party, we got family and friends to dress up as characters and make short videos with clues, then decorated our yard with flags and clue items to create a live version of the Carmen Sandiego game.”

She said their core values were faith and family. This era could be awful or this could be a gift. She read so many negative social media posts, she decided to post positive things that might inspire others. “This was our choice and we didn’t want to tell others what to do or how to feel, but instead offer encouragement and smiles.”

My thoughts: Someday we’ll look back at this time in history (similar to the big flu pandemic of 1918) and be able to tell our grandkids about it. To all of my ag friends, whether you are flying in the air or are on the ground, you are not only essential to your country, you are loved by your family and friends, so stay safe!

The Need for Legislation for Agricultural Drones My consultancy activities with ag-aviation companies allows contact with the demands of the agricultural sector regarding the use of agricultural aviation technology. Thus, I have experiences in the simultaneous use of airplanes and drones in the task of spraying crops. First, it is necessary to highlight that such technologies do not effectively compete for the same application areas. Drones used with a maximum takeoff weight of 25 kg do not have competitive operational performance with typical agricultural aircraft. Drones are an excellent tool to replace operations with back pack sprayers, for example. They are efficient in meeting other demands such as spraying small properties, seedling nurseries, launching inputs that require low quantity per hectare, or coverage difficult to reach areas that in Brazil cannot be serviced by airplanes or helicopters; assuming the swath and droplet sizes are precise.

However, what I perceive today is a lack of regulations for the agricultural operation of drones is beginning to cause some concerns. Ag-aviation services with airplanes, or helicopters, it is necessary to satisfy numerous regulations. For drone operators, few regulations, particularly for agricultural applications, are formally established.

To illustrate what I am talking about, at times I have witnessed agricultural drone operators spraying with total ignorance of the theory necessary to achieve good droplet coverage that defines effective spraying. This is because many operators of such equipment (not all, of course) are people with technical knowledge about basic drone operation.

Perhaps they are excellent drone pilots, but are unaware of the theory that determines the quality and safety of a spray. This occurs due to the lack of specific legislation that will certainly define the registration of operators, their training, rules of operation, parameters and legal limits. Also, relevant aspects such as monitoring and technical responsibility, the training of equipment operators and operational limits (restricted areas) that define the safety of procedures in relation to third parties.

We should not forget that we are talking about operations that involve the use of pesticides.

The reason for the urgent implementation of a standard is to avoid damage to the agricultural sector by inadequate applications that have enormous negative economic potential.

In addition, is the importance of regulations for the prevention of environmental and human health impacts. As it stands today, there is potential for the flooding of the market by people or service providers not qualified for the task, which could bring great losses to agribusinesses.

Aside from the aforementioned facts, agricultural aviation is constantly exposed to the never ending campaign that some foment against aerial spraying. In addition to the ideological motivation, these anti ag-aviation activists will be nurtured with concrete arguments against the industry, given the glaring discrepancy in regulations that exist today.

The potential for the operation of drones used as spray aircraft is advancing at a fast pace. I reiterate that in no way do I dispute the need, usefulness and efficiency of the equipment (assuming the application pattern is precise). What I highlight here is the urgency in assigning standards to the operation of agricultural drones, as the delay in establishing such rules begins to open a reckless gap in a sector that requires high levels of specialization. We cannot allow different worlds to develop within the same domain. The quakes will be shared and will reach equally those who today invest in the technological development of all types of aerial spraying.

Most of our slanderous remarks are not made to others’ faces but rather behind their backs. We need to set guiding principles in our life so we can guard our self from being unkind to others, even when speaking about them in private conversation.

Jesus said, “Whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council” (Matthew 5:22b). The word “Raca” means a worthless, empty headed man; a brainless idiot, foolish, witless. It’s derived from a root word meaning “to spit.” When Christ Jesus walked on this earth “Raca” was a derogatory term used by the Jewish religious leaders towards people they thought were unworthy of their respect. It was arrogant, malicious, and slanderous words that was directed towards someone they despised.

The psalmist says of those kind of people, “They sharpen their tongues like a serpent; the poison of asps is under their lips” (Psalm 140:3).

Humanity has a self-righteousness and sinful habit of making derogatory statements such as: He/she is a brick or two short of a full load, or he/she is uglier than a mud fence. Or “That person is as dumb as a pile of rocks!” There are many ways to verbally put another person down to make us feel better about our self, or that we’re smarter than other people. Showing contempt for someone is murder of the heart, and the death penalty is deserved (Matthew 5:21, 15:19). What we feel inside is enough to damn us to eternal hell as much as what we do on the outside! “The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression” (Proverbs 19:11).

Then Jesus said, “Whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into fiery hell” (Matthew 5:22c). The English word “fool” comes from the Greek word “moros” from which we also get our word moron. In the Bible a fool is one who has rebelled against God. When we call someone a fool as a sign of our hatred towards them, then it’s sinful. But saying someone is being foolish because they’re rebelling against

God, and it’s true, we’ve did them a favor.

The word “fool” doesn’t signify a person that’s ignorant. The word fool used in this context means a person that’s wicked and has a reprobate mind (Romans 1:28). “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction…The wise in heart will receive commands, but a prating fool will fall…

Fools mock at sin, but among the upright there is favor” (Proverbs 1:7, 10:8, 14:8). Twice the psalmist tells us “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1; 53:1). And “The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts” (Psalm 10:4).

We should be very careful about calling someone a fool. That’s especially true when we realize that Greek literature sometimes used it to refer to a godless or obstinate person. It was perhaps parallel to a Hebrew word that means “to rebel against.” Jesus used a related but less severe term when He reprimanded the two disciples on the road to Emmaus: “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!” (Luke 24:25).

Jesus said, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:34-37). Using unjust and injurious statements (slander) against another person is risking being disciplined by God. We can lose eternal rewards because of the words we speak (1 Corinthians 3:9-17).

There are several instances in the Bible where people are reminded of their foolish words and actions. Therefore it’s not wrong for us to warn or rebuke someone who is speaking or acting foolishly and clearly opposing God’s will. In fact, we’re supposed to take this action! The Lord is warning us here, however, that it’s sinful to slanderously call someone a fool out of personal anger or hatred. Maliciously calling another person a fool is equivalent to murder and worthy of discipline by God. “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles” (Proverbs 21:23).

The Bible tells us, “Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, Him I will destroy; The one who has a haughty look and a proud heart, Him I will not endure….

Let not a slanderer be established in the earth; Let evil hunt the violent man to overthrow him… And whoever spreads slander is a fool” (Psalm 101:5, 140:11, Proverbs 10:18).

When God expressed His contempt for a person by calling him/her a fool, He did it with complete and accurate knowledge that the person to whom he attributed foolishness was, in reality, a fool. Accusations made by God (through the writers of the Bible under the power of the Holy Spirit) are not born of unrighteous anger, but of complete knowledge, divine consideration, and a desire for fools to turn from their prodigal ways (2 Peter 3:9). We need to be very careful about calling someone a fool, even when we think they deserve it. Paul wrote, “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your wrath” (Ephesians 4:26). Christ Jesus experienced righteous anger (Matthew 21:12). We need to be very cautious when we’re angry; never letting unjust and hurtful criticism or slander against others come from our lips (Matthew 12:36).

“Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in Him” (1 John 3:15). The word “brother; denotes not only a relative, or fellow Christian, but any other person. “Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit” (Psalm 34:13). “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless” (James 1:26).

More than 600 drawings were made and more than 500 pages of engineering data computed and laid out. This was the real work behind the Air Tractor and all of it was done solely by Snow in one small office.

In 1972, he returned to Olney, obtained a Small Business Administration loan, rented the old Olney armory, hired his first employee, Nat Black, and established the firm now known as Air Tractor, Inc. In September 1973, almost 20 years since the first S-1 broke ground, the initial Air Tractor was flown. A scant 60 days later, FAA certification was received on the plane. This prototype Air Tractor was bought by Jeff Burke of Rio Hondo.

The new firm prospered and by 1975 more space was needed. The operation was moved to the local airport and then, with the help of an FHA loan, the present factory was built.

By 1979 Air Tractor was turning out eight airplanes a month and subsequent models were becoming more and more refined, including the installation of the Pratt & Whitney R-1340, 600 horsepower engine. Air Tractor was the first firm to offer a factory-installed turbine engine-the

Turbo-Tractor was well received as soon as it was marketed.

The original S-1 that developed into the famous Thrush series is still prominent in agricultural aviation. Rockwell-Standard went through a series of internal changes before becoming North American Rockwell. The Thrush line was eventually sold to Fred Ayres who operates the firm in Albany, Georgia, as the Ayres Corporation.

Several models of this aircraft are being produced today, including the turbo-powered Thrush, the famous 600 horsepower Pratt & Whitney Thrush, and the big 1200 horsepower Bull Thrush, a formidable monster.

The saga of Leland Snow is the story of a brilliant and modest man. Snow can always be reached personally and he is always ready and willing to discuss airplanes of all types. This is indeed refreshing in a modem world where most of us are too busy to attend to the small things that make life so worthwhile.

During the 1950s, Snow was not the only one pointing toward the production of a commercial agricultural plane. The Transland Company, as it was originally called, was created in 1946 ➤

and for some years engaged in fabricating structures and components for military aircraft. In 1951, Transland became established in ag aviation when it began designing and producing applicating equipment. This firm was headed up by George S. Wing, already prominent in aviation circles.

Many of Transland’s products became standard in the industry. In 1957, the firm became a division of Hi­Shear Rivet Tool Company and was renamed Transland Aircraft. Transland was among the first firms to use the new fiberglass and polyethylene techniques for tanks and hoppers. It also produced the well-known Sellers Swathmaster, a patented unit which dispensed dry or liquid materials without changeover.

Transland’s entry into aircraft production came about as the result of a meeting of minds among Wing, Lloyd Stearman, T.J. Watson, who was the managing director of Australia’s

Aerial Agriculture, Inc., and George A. Roth, who had been instrumental in the construction of the original Ag-1 back at Texas A & Min 1949. At the time, Roth was with Murrayair Ltd., of Hawaii, a far-flung operation headed by Phil Murray, a California pioneer in ag aviation circles.

The men designed the Ag-2, a plane that in some ways followed the general configuration of the old Ag-1. Emphasis, however, was placed on greater payloads and a design that could be produced in volume.

Airframe construction began in 1954 and precision tooling was built to production requirements. Five sets of interchangeable parts for this new aircraft were fabricated in the beginning.

The first model of the Ag-2, equipped with a 450 horsepower Pratt & Whitney Wasp Jr., came off the line at the Torrance, California factory and was test flown at Torrance Municipal Airport

on October 11, 1956. This aircraft, designated as Number 1, went into extensive flight testing.

A major brush fire in December 1956 near Malibu gave the aircraft a real service test, when Transland made the plane available to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Transland engineers had already considered the feasibility of using the Ag-2 as an aerial tanker. During the fire, the plane dropped more than 25 tons of fire retardant chemicals, using the Santa Monica Airport as a base. Its huge tank/ hopper, holding nearly 3,000 pounds of fire retardant, was of considerable help in containing this blaze.

The low-wing Ag-2 was constructed of metal and was quite awe-inspiring. It measured 42 feet from wing tip to wing tip and was 28 feet, five inches long.

With a 53 cubic foot tank/hopper, it carried 395 gallons and had a provision for installing two 62.5 gallon auxiliary tanks in the wings.

Pilot Safety Features It also incorporated many pilot safety features, including wire cutters on the gear, a cable cutter down the center of the windshield, and cable deflectors from the cockpit aft to the vertical fin. The plane had full flaps, a Hamilton Standard constant speed prop, and Transland’s most modem combination dust/spray installation.

Liquid spray booms and nozzles were mounted on the aft side of the wing spars, out of the slipstream.

The Ag-2 made its first agricultural appearance when it was demonstrated at the Texas Agricultural Aviation Operators’ annual meeting at College Station, Texas in January 1957. It was very popular and was subsequently demonstrated at other ag aviation meetings throughout the country.

Later in 1957 George Wing went to Canada to observe the huge spruce budworm operation and to determine the Ag-2’s capability for this type of large-scale work. Engineering pilot Max Hartley went along on this mission.

In November 1957 Fred Thearle was made chief engineer of the Ag-2 project and while ship number 1 was being flown and evaluated, ship number 2 was being completed with the larger 600 horsepower Pratt & Whitney engine. This plane flew first on June 3, 1958, and, with the new engine, a 3,000 pound payload became practical. The 600 horsepower Pratt & Whitney engine was more readily available than the smaller 450 and was low-priced. A Transland sales sheet offered this engine with 200 hours or less total time for $1,200, while completely remanufactured models with zero time went for $3,000!

under FAA Part ill regulations. Wing then embarked on a world tour, consulting with agricultural flying people in Turkey, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii to learn first-hand about the sales potential of the newly developed plane.

All things considered, the Ag-2 was perhaps the most scientifically produced and extensively tested ag aircraft ever built. The United States Department of Agriculture Research Station at Forest Grove, Oregon, spent several months using the plane in several aerial spray distribution studies. This program was of considerable benefit to operators who were becoming engaged in the business for the first time.

Ironically, the Ag-2 was never really quite completely successful from a commercial standpoint. Conrad Barlow, who joined Transland during this period and took over as export sales manager, discussed this matter recently. Conrad is still active with Transland and attended the 1981 convention in Las Vegas.

“The Ag-2’s time was off,” mused Barlow. “It came along just when many of the major aircraft manufacturers such as Grumman, Cessna, and Snow were getting into the act in a big way and began producing new planes in quantity.

In many ways, this was a pity, since the aircraft itself was superbly engineered and an excellent performer.

Barlow believes one of the prototypes is still actively flying, somewhere in Venezuela. One of the aims of the National Agricultural Aviation Museum in Jackson, Mississippi, is to obtain one of these historic airplanes.

How Psychology Can Help with Stress for Ag Pilots Looking for meanings for the word stress, means “to be under pressure” or “to be under the action of persistent stimulus”. Stress is the finger that often pushes the first domino causing serious dysfunction in the body. Low flight, low speed, failed or deficient maintenance and obstacles on the ground are some challenges or causes for the pilot’s physical exhaustion in agricultural aviation.

Emotional tiredness causes physical and mental disorders in the aviator. In many cases, they need to be removed from the work environment in order to be treated. Some symptoms of stress are: insomnia, fatigue, constant headaches, body aches, intestinal changes, rapid heart rate, sweating, increased blood pressure, nausea, among others.

The work environment can also cause behavioral changes in people, making them more aggressive and making social life more difficult. Frequent fights, pressure and demands are crucial factors in creating a tense environment, which ends up interfering with employees’ behavior.

In order to deal with this evil, it is necessary to find out its causes and know how to deal with it. Since several people in the same environment could be suffering from the same evil, it increases the apprehensive climate and any misinterpreted word becomes a reason for further disagreements.

In order to maintain safety and avoid an aviation accident, the domino effect must be removed. The worker must take measures to avoid possible stressors.

Physical measures—Exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet, sleep properly and in sufficient amounts, control the timing of sounds and noises and adapt to the physical environment in which one finds itself.

Don’t try to control the uncontrollable—Many things are beyond our control - especially other people’s behavior.

Instead of trying to change or complain about them, focus on what you can control, such as the way you choose to react to unresolved attitudes.

Count on the other—Try to surround yourself with positive people in the workplace and in your personal life. Having

someone to let off steam to and feel supported by can help you reduce tension and see ways out of problems. Seeking help is a sign of strength and a way to return to a healthy emotional state more quickly.

Breathe—Breathing deeply and slowly can help in times of acute stress. Sit comfortably, close your eyes if you can and inhale for five seconds, hold and exhale through your nose for a count of ten. Repeat five times. This simple technique will help you relax, combat the symptoms of anxiety and stress, and restore balance.

Psychological measures—Prepare with knowledge, skills and procedures. Have confidence in your training and try to have a well-balanced social and family life. Work to where financial and personal concerns are not a problem. Solve problems as quickly as possible, in order to avoid a snowball effect of issues going unattended.

If you feel that stress is dominating your life, seek professional help. In therapeutic sessions, the patient will find a space where he can talk about his anguish, feelings, doubts and feel welcomed and recognized in his pain. Allowing for empathetic listening, recognition and acceptance, act to bring comfort in a time of difficulties.

Alleviation of symptoms and complaints of agricultural aviation professionals reduces conflicts with more effective and satisfactory results for everyone. Regardless of the stage of stress, it is possible to seek treatment, whether conventional or alternative. This results in dedicated workers, happy with their work, with greater creativity and interaction in the business environment.

The agricultural aviation community is a small one. We’re like a small town that just happens to be scattered out around the world. The operations we work for are simply the neighborhoods we live in. Like a small town, we pretty much know each other, or we are at least familiar with the names.

Like any small town, we come together to grieve over the loss of one of our own. We pitch in to lend a hand when there’s trouble or tragedy and we cheer for our neighbors and friends when weddings happen, babies are born or any occasion when the good Lord blesses them. That’s the best part.

And, like any small town we have our gossip and drama. Not much, but some. And some is enough. Of course, we often know when a guy is doing wrong, just as we know when he’s doing right. I keep imagining (remembering) an old woman leaning from a window with a scolding scowl, shaking an accusatory finger, “I’m gonna tell your momma I saw you smokin’!”

We tend to leave each other alone for the most part. In this industry we are folks who value independence and the fact that a man shoulders the responsibility for his own decisions and actions. Right, wrong, or otherwise. We’ll slap him on the back and shake his hand when he deserves it. We’ll let him learn a lesson, then help him back up if he falls; when he deserves it.

We have a solid support system contained in our common bonds. Friendships and professional relationships are more valuable than a flat, sixmile run at a gallon an acre, on a cool clear day with no wires.

The best reputation a man can have is for someone to say they never heard of him. No news is good news. Our world has gotten mighty small over the last several years. The Internet and social media have brought us together as though we all lived next door. By the time I go to work in the

afternoon, I might already know how the day has progressed for the boys in Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, Florida, or anywhere else; even Australia or South America.

There’s a lot of darn nice people in the ag aviation world and the agricultural sector as a whole. I have a lot of good friends out there I’ve never met face to face.

It’s good to be connected and have opportunities to get to know people we may not have otherwise had the chance to meet. Pilots I respect and admire even though I’ve never personally seen them fly. Operators who I would consider the finest in the business even though I’ve never been to their hangars. Maybe that’s taking a lot for granted. Maybe it’s not. We share an in depth commonality that gives us all a good understanding of what an ag pilot is, or at least should be.

Social media comes with an unlimited chance for misunderstandings and disagreements. When a person is typing out a statement, he is missing a lot of the natural means of communication we humans rely on in order to understand the what, why, and where, of what a person is saying.

We can, however, use common sense and a prudent approach to what we share and how we portray ourselves and others we are associated with. We sure don’t want to make it easy for them. We are a dynamic breed of aviator. There’s no slot or bin we can be placed in and be told to sit still and shut up. Ain’t gonna happen. And that’s just the way it is.

Sometimes we’ll come across something that appears to be a threat. There have been times when we’ve gotten a thorn in our side and instead of trying to heal the wound, we’ve managed to aggravate it until it festered, swelled up and caused us more grief than it was worth. Pluck the damn thing out, and let it heal. Leave it alone, don’t scratch it.

It will go away before you know it.

The bottom line is, we all come from the same place. A place that smells like Av-Gas, Jet-A, pesticides, grease and sweat. We live and work in a little place called agricultural aviation that occupies some of the largest parcels of real estate on the planet. We’re all born with an odd DNA strand that ties us together and causes us to need a certain amount of adrenaline to survive. Our brothers test positive for toxic masculinity and our sisters all carry a rare type of feminine strength that has become HOT SECTION COMPONENT an endangered trait among modern women. We’ve learned to take these things into consideration, most of the time. It’s been a learning curve for our society and particularly for folks who, like us, might be on the backside of social technology and emerging customs. And, by the way for the most part, is a fine enough place for me.

I once heard a man say, “If you want to know what a man is made of, judge him not by his friends, but by his enemies.” We have plenty who oppose us and they troll social media sites for ammunition to use against us. Naturally, we want to avoid photos and videos that display the kind of flying or operating practices that could reflect negatively on the industry.

I think sometimes we definitely take the idea to an extreme when we start worrying about how someone “might” misconstrue what we’re doing. The fact is, we can’t worry ourselves over every detail or possible outcome of what some falsely educated, low intelligence person may or may not try to

Abide Ag-Aero Closes After 61 Years L-R, Tommy Lewis, Charlene Heafner and Harold Powers

After decades serving ag operators and pilots in the Mississippi Delta, Harold Powers, Jr. will go into well-deserved retirement and shutter the business that he helped build since 1959. Air Tractor parts distributor Abide Ag-Aero, a staple in Mississippi agricultural aviation, is closing after 61 years.

“I started with Mr. Abide in April of 1959, and it was just me and him handling the business,” Powers recalls. “We sold Air Tractor airplanes and Air Tractor parts. I took care of the parts business and Mr. Abide took care of the airplane sales.”

Major Lee Cody Abide was a professional pilot, aerobatics instructor and crop duster before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. During WWII, Abide ferried airplanes, then transferred to the China-Burma-India theater and was stationed with the U.S. Air Transport Command in Jorhat, India. He flew B-24 and C-87 Liberator transport airplanes over “The Hump,” from India above the Himalaya peaks into China. After the war,

Abide returned to his crop dusting business and eventually began selling Air Tractor aircraft as an official dealer. He founded Abide Ag-Aero in 1959, and a young Powers helped run the shop. When Abide passed away in 1990, Powers approached Air Tractor founder Leland Snow and asked him if he could keep the parts business of the dealership.

“I didn’t have the ag aviation knowledge, or the money to do the Air Tractor airplane sales part of the dealership,” Powers said. “Leland agreed to let me continue as the Air Tractor parts distributor in Mississippi. Leland was a great man, and very humble. All the Air Tractor people I’ve dealt with were good people. It’s like a big family. And so was Gene Williams, the Air Tractor parts man who I worked with before Jeff Dobbs, the current Air Tractor Customer Service manager.”

Jim Hirsch, president of Air Tractor, said Abide Ag-Aero is a piece of ag aviation history. “It has always been a pleasure doing business with Harold and Abide Ag-Aero,” Hirsch said. “It is people like

Based at Abide Airpark, the company is geographically located in the most concentrated group of Air Tractor operators in the world: the Mississippi Delta. In addition to being a convenient, local source for Air Tractor OEM parts, Abide Ag-Aero also offered an extensive inventory of aerial spraying accessory equipment and parts.

Customers appreciated the expertise and continuity of service—and the familiar faces at the company. Tommy Lewis was the Parts Sales manager at Abide Ag-Aero, and he worked with Powers for more than two decades. Charlene Heafner was also there for more than 20 years as office manager and administrative assistant.

Powers also was involved in the Mississippi Ag Aviation Association, the Arkansas Ag Aviation Association, the Louisiana Ag Aviation Association, and the National Agricultural Aviation Association.

He represented and advocated for the industry, receiving several awards for his longtime efforts.

Those who know him often describe Powers as “the perfect Southern gentleman.” It was

something ingrained in him very early on. “It comes from my family—my mother and my grandmother. It was simply the way I was brought up,” Powers said. And that’s how he has done business.

As his years in the business turned into decades, Powers witnessed the changes in agricultural aviation and aircraft technology.

Powers watched the evolution from Air Tractor radial engine airplanes to turbine engine airplanes.

“It began with the AT-402, then went to the 502, then the 602 and then the 802. Ag pilots just kept buying the bigger airplanes as they came out.

And with more airplane models came more parts inventory to support them.” Powers recalled.

For a time, Powers also sold parts to aerial spraying operations across the Mississippi river in Arkansas and Louisiana until the market got more competitive. “More ag plane parts companies opened, and they sold the same parts that we offered,” he said. “After a time, our sales declined in those states, so we just focused on Mississippi sales. I stopped exhibiting at the Louisiana convention first, and then the Arkansas convention later.”

Yet, through all the changes and challenges Abide Ag-Aero stuck around—in part because of the longtime relationship with the people of Air Tractor. “It really is like one big family, and they treated me like part of their family. I couldn’t help but feel the same way toward them,” Powers said.

“Leland Snow made my life possible by letting me keep the Air Tractor parts business. He was a kind man.”

Of course, after so many years in the business the relationships with customers also meant a lot to Powers - and so did the many folks that he worked with in the state and national agricultural aviation associations.

Yet in recent years it became time to slow down. Perhaps the most surprising fact about Powers is that despite having sold so many Air Tractor parts to keep airplanes flying, Powers has never flown in an Air Tractor. “I’m not a pilot—just strictly parts. I like staying on the ground,” Powers said.

And so, with his feet firmly planted on the ground, Air Tractor congratulates Harold Powers, Jr., on his retirement as Abide Ag-Aero becomes a part of agricultural aviation history.
