FROM THE COCKPIT

Savannah is the Greatest The NAAA has gotten really good at hosting an international convention, and this year in Savannah was no exception. Starting Sunday, December 5 through Thursday, December 9, the 100th anniversary-themed Ag Aviation Expo was held at the Savannah convention center.

This year’s convention and an entire year was and is a celebration of our industry’s 100 years of being in existence.

To both Georgia and Savannah’s credit, there basically were no covid restrictions. The NAAA convention attendees and exhibitors were free to carry on like pre-covid times. That fact added to the pleasure of attending this year’s expo. I want to welcome the new NAAA officers 2022. These men have an imposing job ahead of them. Fortunately, they were given their duties in good working order. For that, an enthusiastic round of applause goes to the departing officers. Of course, the sustaining NAAA staff has always done a superb job supporting new officers. As we advance into 2022, I feel confident that the NAAA will prosper just as it did in 2021. It should go without saying, but this year’s convention and an entire year, as a matter of fact, was and is a celebration of our industry’s 100 years of being in existence. However, 100 years is a relatively short period of time when considering accomplishments made during that time. Imagine an open cockpit, converted bi-plane Jenny progressing to an 800-gallon, turbine-powered, purpose-built, ag aircraft is quite a feat. Who would have thought such progress could be made without the government’s help, at least not specifically.

A 6 | agairupdate.com

The aircraft transition is only one part of our story. The advancement of spray technology is remarkable, going from thrown overboard pesticide dust to electronic spray nozzles to a host of other nozzle designs. Lest we not overlook, the best application equipment is no better than the accuracy of the application, namely GPS-guided flow rates and swath widths. I could write pages about the latest and greatest technology of ag aviation. I’ve only touched on a couple in this text. There are many, and all are important to the continued advancement of ag-aviation. This industry has always embraced new tech, keeping the good and discarding the not-so-good. We are a unique, needed industry, which contributes so much to our survival. I look forward to visiting with you at some of the upcoming state shows. Unless something changes, I believe it will be a very productive convention season, both for attendees and exhibitors. I know Graham and I will attend many of them, so be sure to stop by and visit us at the AgAir Update booth. Until next month, Keep Turning

CRAYMER’S COUNSEL

Robert Craymer - robertc@covingtonaircraft.com

Engine Preservation Holidays, hunting, family and fun! It is that time of year for North America Ag Aviation. For many, the airplanes are scheduled for an annual inspection or put to bed until next season. For some operators, the season continues well into the upcoming months. For those who are done for the season, this article is for you. Remember that your engine still needs some love if you are in the deer stand or sharing a meal with family and friends. Just like you depend on your engine to take care of you, your engine relies on you to take care of it. During the times of the year that you don’t fly every day, you need to make sure that your engine is preserved and stored correctly. Unfortunately, I have witnessed firsthand what can happen if you don’t follow some simple steps to keep your engine protected when not in use. Like any machine, the times the PT6 engine is not used can be just as hard or harder on A 20 | agairupdate.com

it than when it is being used routinely. Pratt and Whitney Canada have given us some very easy-to-follow guidelines that will make sure when you are ready to work, so is your engine. Everything regarding preservation is scheduled around the time frame and has significant consequences. If an engine is not preserved per the published schedule, the engine could suffer corrosion damage, and the warranty could be voided. The only way to check for corrosion damage is to disassemble the engine to inspect ALL components visually. Therefore, we always provide time to discuss the importance of engine preservation.

Here is what you need to know: If the engine is going to be inactive for 0 to 7 days, all required is to make sure that the engine is sheltered. Humidity changes and temperature changes that can cause condensation are grounds to move your preservation plan to the next level. Also, if there is a lot of salt in ➤

oil, remove the oil filter and coat the flanges and other exposed surfaces with either oil or a preservation compound as described in the engine maintenance manual. Add a tag to your oil filler cap advising that the oil has been drained and include the preservation date. If you expect the engine to sit longer than a year, you must remove it, do all the above, and store it in a proper shipping container.

What happens if I don’t?

the atmosphere you live in, you want to do a clean water rinse (desalinization wash) before storing the airplane. Exhaust covers, inlet covers, and securing the prop are the only other requirements. The second calendar interval classification is 8 to 28 days. This area of the calendar is the most common in ag aviation. The first step is to run the engine and follow the 0 to 7-day instructions. Next, you will need to add desiccant bags and a humidity indicator in the exhaust duct. The objective is to maintain and confirm the humidity level at 40%. Check the humidity indicator every couple of weeks; replace the desiccant and indicator if it turns pink. Make sure there is not a source of humidity near the engine, and if there is, make sure to remove it. If your off time dictates that your engine must sit 29 to 90 days, there are several additional steps to take. Washing the engine inside and out, touching up any of the missing protective coatings, and lubricating the linkage. Next, disconnect the fuel supply line and cap at the oil-to-fuel heater. Disconnect the fuel line at the flow divider inlet and add the proper preservation oil. Instructions in the maintenance manual show you how to do a motoring run to replace the fuel in the system with the preservation oil. Then, of course, you cap and cover everything. Make sure that you follow the 0 to 28 days steps and don’t forget your humidity indicator. For some, the engine may sit over 90 days. For those, you must do all the above plus drain the A 22 | agairupdate.com

If your engine is not preserved 8-28 days before engine start, you must do a Total Acid Number test on the engine oil. Up to 90 days, there are numerous other things you must check and do and specific start and run procedures. If your engine goes up to a year unpreserved, fuel nozzles, accessory bench checks, and additional inspections are required. In addition, the engine must be disassembled and inspected for corrosion. The easy alternative is to run the engine weekly. That may seem like a nuisance, but maybe not when you compare it to the cost of parts replacement or downtime for inspections. You want to run at 80% power for 10 minutes when you perform these runs. This reduces the condensation in the oil system and prevents fuel stagnation. Remember that if you don’t record the work you do to preserve your engine in the engine logbook, then it didn’t happen. Engine preservation must be documented. All of this is especially important if you have Pratt & Whitney Canada warranty on your engine. You don’t want to put your warranty claim in jeopardy just because the engine wasn’t preserved or stored correctly. I hope everyone is excited as we move through the convention season. I have already attended a couple of state shows. It was great to get out and interact with people again. I am looking forward to the upcoming shows and the classes that I teach, plus the time to visit colleagues and friends in the industry. Please reach out to me at robertc@ covingtonaircraft.com if you have any questions, and I’ll be glad to assist.

SLAF’s Air Power for Aerial Reforestation Aerial reforestation was completed at the Wattegama Kebilitta Government Forest Reserve in the Siyambalanduwa Divisional Secretariat in Sri Lanka on October 5 and 6, 2021. The Command Agro Unit at the SLAF Base Katunayake, under the leadership of Group Captain Rajeev Kodippily and the Forest Conservation Department, organized this valuable eco mission to achieve the aim of improving the forest density of Sri Lanka to reach the sustainable development goals of the country. The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has been actively involved in a number of efforts to restore the forest cover of Sri Lanka. The involvement of the SLAF in the pioneering Seed Sowing Project by air is a continuation and reaffirmation of its commitment to this worthy endeavor. The SLAF, entrusted with the maintenance of national security through the judicious use of airpower, released information that air asset work creates new dense foliage within existing forests, thereby increasing and improving oxygen levels. The idea of aerial reforestation first originated in Japan with the ancient practice of tsuchi dango A 24 | agairupdate.com

(earth dumpling) method. It was popularised by Masanobu Fukuoka, a proponent of natural farming, in the 20th century. Aerial seeding for forest restoration has been steadily practiced since 1926, when aircraft were used for the first time to revive a burned tropical forest in Hawaii. However, it was only in 1999 that the idea of seed sowing by air (also known as seed bombing) on an industrial scale got the attention of officials. Aerial reforestation works best when wet soil conditions and rolling terrain prevent other methods of treating an area. The aerial application does not cause soil compaction, hence preventing soil runoff. This type of seeding technique will be most useful for tropical forests because they absorb carbon much faster than other forest types and also support much higher biodiversity. On the other hand, it protects humans who have to enter the forest for planting from the threat of dangerous wild animal attacks. According to the New York Declaration on Forests in 2014, the commitment to restore 350 million hectares of deforested and degraded lands by 2030 was made. ➤

The Command Agro Unit of the SLAF, in collaboration with the Peradeniya University, joined the project to increase the forest cover of the country to achieve the sustainable development goal of Sri Lanka by increasing the green cover from the present status to 30 percent in the future. Sustaining forests, in turn, protects wildlife and gives stability to fragile ecosystems. The first wave of this aerial sowing mission was executed at the Ranorawa Government Forest in a five-acre land area, and approximately 5,000 seed balls were released. During the second wave, 67,000 seed balls were dropped over a 60 acres area inside the forest of Lahugala in Ampara. The successful third wave, which was conducted in December 2020, saw the dropping of approximately 30,000 seed balls over a 25-acre land area within the Lahugala National Park. The fourth wave was also carried out by the SLAF in the Lahugala National Park, where 70,000 seed balls were dropped over a 60-acre area. This mission coincided with the 70th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Air Force.

The seed balls comprised seeds of native trees such as Kon (Schleichera oleosa), Kohomba (Azadirachta indica), Maila (Bauhinia racemosa), Ma dan (Syzygium cumini), Siyambala (Tamarindus Indica), Mee (Madhuca longifolia), Palu (Manilkara hexandra), Kumbuk (Terminalia arjuna), Weera (Drypetes Sepiaria), Bulu (Terminalia bellirica), Kithul (Caryota urens), Munamal (Mimusops elengi), Aralu (Oroxylum Indicum), Domba (Calophyllum inophyllum) and Ketakala (Bridelia retusa). The total land area covered by this mission was approximately 75 acres, with 80,000 seed balls being dropped, and this mission was planned to coincide with the monsoon rain season and maximize effective tree growth. The SLAF Station Weerawila was utilized as the staging base for this mission as it was 29 Nautical Miles from the selected area. The MI-17 helicopter, which was airborne for this mission, was captained by Wing Commander Jagath Gunatilleke while the Co-Pilot was Flying Officer Dinuka Gunasinghe.

In developed countries, for example, the US Air Force had successfully used a C-130 Hercules aircraft to plant thousands of trees in one day, using the aerial seed sowing system. Some Western nations are prudently using agricultural aircraft and even drones to drop seeds and create new forest cover. The SLAF is also considering this new aspect of deploying its drones for similar planting missions in the future.

The Chief of the Command Agro Unit (SLAF) Group Captain Rajeev Koddipily said: “We appreciate the support and guidance given by Professor Gamini Pushpakumara, the Dean –Agriculture Faculty of the Peradeniya University and Bharatha Bandara, the Divisional Forest Officer, Monaragala. We select the seeds to match the forest areas. Making the seed balls is a long process. In the last mission, we took 12 days to prepare 80,000 seeds balls. SPREADING THE FACTS

Michelle Miller - michelle@thefarmbabe.com

The Top 10 Myths About Ag Aviation Are Debunked and Shareable With Your Friends! Less than 2% of the U.S. population is directly involved in agriculture. Thus, it’s easy to believe myths and misconceptions in an area we are not familiar with. How many people have had the opportunity to talk with agricultural pilots?

Use this data to relay the truth about aerial applications.

Even farmers can sometimes be unfamiliar with particular topics. Many farmers who specialize in their specific area: cattle, sheep, row crops, etc., may be less familiar with farming practices outside of their area of expertise. It’s important to talk to real agricultural pilots, farmers, and agricultural professionals about their work to get the facts. They are the experts in their fields. You would ask your mechanic about your car or your doctor about your health. Myths and misconceptions flourish with media sensationalism, misleading marketing, and activists looking to get ahead using scare tactics. This can make it challenging to distinguish myths from facts and contribute to food insecurity. So if you have an opportunity to share some facts with your friends, here are the top ten myths debunked. 1. “Crop dusting” is an accurate description. Today many pilots prefer “aerial application” or “ag pilot.” Crop

A 28 | agairupdate.com

dusting brings to mind an old-fashioned image of a grizzled man flying an old biplane low over a field in Illinois. Aerial application has dramatically evolved, so the language used to describe it has become. These well-trained, experienced pilots are called “ag pilots” or “aerial applicators.” 2. It’s old-fashioned and low-tech. Today, aerial application is performed using high-tech turbine engines complete with GPS systems for planning and coordinating applications. GPS swath guidance, aerial imaging, and precise mapping and dispersal systems have been revolutionary. Pilots are trained in everything from aerial application to pesticide application to entomology. This training helps to protect the environment and your food. 3. Applying products to crops is unnecessary. Like humans, plants need proper nutrition and protection from diseases and pests to reach maximum growth potential. Without the ability to

protect crops, up to 80% of the world’s food production could be lost. Crop protection products are an essential tool that has allowed modern agriculture to increase crop yields while dramatically using less land. This is essential to food security and sustainability. With an evergrowing world population projected to reach 9 billion by 2050, the world will need to double food production even with a limited amount of land suitable for farming. Increasing the efficiency of the land already in production is critical. 4. Aerial application isn’t necessary for agriculture. On the contrary, agricultural aviation plays a vital role in helping farmers produce a safe, affordable, and abundant food, fiber, and bioenergy supply. Agricultural products can be applied from the ground; however, in many cases, it is faster, safer, more efficient, and effective to do this from the air. Aircraft are not limited by wet fields and can apply products even when crop canopies are too thick for ground rigs. When crops are threatened by pests or disease, time is of the essence. According to the National Agricultural Aviation Association, an airplane or helicopter can do more in an hour than a ground rig can accomplish in a day. This reduces fuel use, air pollution, soil compaction, and topsoil runoff. Aircraft are instrumental in low-till and no-till systems. 5. Crop Protection Products (Chemicals) are unsafe. There is a rigorous 8 to 10-year process for crop protection products to be approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Only 1 in 20,000 chemicals make it through the process. Even once it’s on the market, it is continuously monitored by the EPA, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and state agencies for food, worker, and environmental safety. The dose makes the poison. If you swallow a bottle of aspirin, you could die, but taking two tablets is beneficial—the same thing with crop protection products such as pesticides. For example, glyphosate, one of the safest farm chemicals out there, is applied at ounces (yes ounces) per acre! Most of

what is being sprayed is water. This dose is effective and well within the strict regulatory guidelines. Farmers use crop protection products judiciously because It’s the right thing to do, and they’re too expensive to use at will. Specifically, the aerial application industry continuously innovates and improves equipment and techniques to minimize safety risks and educate pilots. 6. Organic farmers don’t use aerial applications or pesticides. This is a straight-up myth. Organic farmers still use pesticides. Pests, weeds, and diseases still need to be controlled like any other farming system. Organic pesticides are one tool for this. Organic pesticides are non-synthetic but are no safer than nonorganic products. The organic label is not a reflection of food safety, nutrition, or quality. All foods must meet high food safety standards, whether organic or not. There’s nothing wrong with choosing organic or non-organic. Both are safe and produced by farmers deserving of our respect. 7. Aircraft are just used for pesticides for crops. Aerial application is not limited to pesticides. Aerial application also includes seeding and fertilizing. Many aerial applicators protect forestry by helping to fight forest fires with water. Did you know they can also be used to reduce the spread of disease? They play an essential role in combating mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus, encephalitis, and other diseases. Oil clean-up? Aerial application plays a vital role in protecting our oceans when there is a catastrophic oil spill. Fuel tankers? Aerial Application aircraft ferry fuel to remote villages worldwide to help with infrastructure. Pond stocking? Yes! They do that too. A popular method to maintain pond and stream health is using aircraft to drop fish. 8. Aerial application is unregulated. Professionals who use crop protection products, including ag pilots, are closely regulated by state and federal organizations to ensure and continuously monitor the health and safety of the public, workers, and the environment. ➤ agairupdate.com | A 29

These organizations include the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and state departments of agriculture, ecology, and environment. Strict documentation of each field sprayed and regular inspection are required. Each aerial application pilot is licensed in the state they are performing work. 9. Aerial application is a security risk. The National Agricultural Aviation Association takes security measures very seriously, even before the events of 9/11. Since then, they have implemented even greater security measures including thorough background checks, site security operation plans, and hidden security switches, which prevent unauthorized personnel from starting the aircraft. Aerial applicators continue to work with local, state, and federal officials to make sure public safety concerns are addressed so that the public can benefit from agricultural aviation. 10. It’s an easy job. Being an ag pilot can be a gratifying profession. It also requires great skill and precision. The flying itself can be technically challenging, and thus pilots require lots of aviation training. Ag pilots are also in growing demand, and they provide essential services to farmers, foresters, and the public. But flying is the easy part and must be second nature. The pilot must be a professional applicator first. If you think about it, it just makes sense that these are just myths. Ag pilots are highly-trained professionals who have vested interests in the environment’s health, human health, and food security. More than 90% of them own their own business, many of which are family businesses—the farmers who utilize aerial application care too. The health of the land, water, and the air is essential to their livelihoods and lives. Food safety matters too because they feed their families from the same food supply. About 98% of American farms are family farms. Aerial application is essential to ensure we have a safe, abundant, and affordable food supply. Next time you have a question about Aerial Application, ask the pilots, agriculturalists, and farmers who are outstanding in their fields or flying above them.

2021 Zoren and Joan O’Brien Memorial Outstanding Service Award Damon Reabe, Dairyland Aviation, Waupun, Wisconsin The Zoren and Joan O’Brien Memorial Outstanding Service Award is presented to an individual for exceptional service to the agricultural aviation industry and the National Agricultural Aviation Association. Two recipients received this award in 2021. Damon Reabe of Waupun, Wisconsin, is one, and Rusty Lindeman of D’Hanis, Texas, received the other award. Damon is NAAA’s go-to guy for explaining even the most complicated of aerial application topics. It seems he is always educating someone about aerial application, be it his insurance underwriter, a farmer, a chemical registrant or state or federal pesticide regulator. Damon chairs the NAAA Government Relations Committee and is the vice chair of the Precision Agriculture Committee. He serves on NAAA’s CAM 8 ad hoc committee and the knowledge and skills ad hoc committee, which is developing new airman certification standards for Part 137 pilots. Damon also is NAAA’s representative on the Pesticide Policy Dialogue Committee, an influential federal advisory committee to the EPA comprised of stakeholders involved in pesticides ranging from activists to academia to applicators to regulators to farmers. As a PAASS presenter, he travels to several state conventions teaching aerial applicators how to be safer and better environmental stewards. B 4 | agairupdate.com

The industry is better off because of Damon’s willingness to commit his time and talents to so many vital issues affecting aerial applicators.

2021 Zoren and Joan O’Brien Memorial Outstanding Service Award Rusty Lindeman, Rusty’s Flying Service, D’Hanis, Texas

The promotional campaign and Planes movie, with its positive portrayal of crop duster planes, were huge successes. So much so that Disney released a sequel, Planes: Fire & Rescue, the next summer. During their theatrical runs, the two films, combined, earned almost $180 million domestically and nearly $400 million worldwide. Today the Planes movies are available on demand through streaming platforms like Disney+.

Rusty Lindeman started Rusty’s Flying Service in 1992. Eight years ago, he jumped at a golden opportunity to help the public understand how aerial applicators help produce a safe, abundant and affordable food supply.

Fast-forward to 2021 and NAAA’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of the aerial application industry. After months of discussion, NAAA successfully mediated an agreement with Rusty and Lea Lindeman, Disney and the Smithsonian Institution to donate the fully functional Dusty Crophopper plane to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

In 2013, Disney approached Air Tractor about an airplane project to promote its soon-to-premiere movie, Planes. Its protagonist was a cartoon crop dusting airplane named Dusty Crophopper. Air Tractor executives pitched the project to Rusty. He had a spare AT-301 and agreed to spearhead the effort of creating the live version of Dusty Crophopper, starting with converting it from a radial model to a turbinepowered AT-400A. The team that installed the turbine engine conversion and repaired, sanded and painted all the skin completed everything in just six weeks.

To mark the industry’s centennial Rusty flew his “Dusty” plane to his new home at the Steven F. UdvarHazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum.

Rusty spent the better part of two months over the summer of 2013 performing in five air shows throughout North America as the live-action version of Dusty Crophopper to promote Planes’ theatrical release. Besides plugging the movie, the script for Rusty’s air show performances extolled the performance capabilities of ag aircraft and the benefits of agricultural aviation.

To mark the industry’s centennial on August 3, 2021, Rusty flew his “Dusty” plane from Texas to the Washington, D.C., area to deliver Dusty to his new home at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum. The Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, is the second-mostpopular aviation museum in the ➤

In Times of Crisis, You Need NAAA in Your Corner. When a crisis strikes, the National Agricultural Aviation Association rises to meet it head-on. When other industries were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NAAA made sure the aerial application industry was deemed an “essential” business, clearing the way for you to conduct your needed and necessary services without delay. Not only did NAAA make sure that crop input services like the ones aerial applicators provide were listed as essential, your national association successfully petitioned to extend expiration dates for flight medical, commercial pesticide applicator, and numerous other needed licenses to conduct aerial application services so the industry could keep running when government agency offices were shuttered. 2021 Allied Industry Individual Award Terry Humphrey, Thrush Aircraft, Albany, Georgia The Allied Industry Individual Award is presented to individuals whose efforts have contributed significantly to the allied industry and the aerial application industry. NAAA’s 2021 recipient, Terry Humphrey has devoted himself to agricultural aviation for over 40 years. He is officially the manager of flight operations at Thrush Aircraft, but that title doesn’t begin to cover all the roles he has filled throughout this career. Whether he was spraying in another country, abroad for a month training pilots in Australia, or exhibiting at conventions, Terry has given his all to agricultural aviation. He was the first ag pilot to perform in an ag plane at EAA’s AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 2013. For NAAA’s centennial festivities at AirVenture 2021 in July, Terry showed off his flying skills to thousands of aviation enthusiasts once again while flying in concert with Arkansas operator Michael Hutchins. Together, the dynamic air show performers wowed B 6 | agairupdate.com

tens of thousands of onlookers with their high-speed, low-flying aerial application maneuvers. When he wasn’t performing, Terry met with attendees and fielded questions on a range of aerial application topics at NAAA’s booth and next to the Thrush 510P on static display. Terry makes sure every pilot he trains is proficient, educated and most important—safe. He has spent countless hours in the back seat of a Thrush, teaching young and older pilots from around the world the skills necessary to support farmers, educate the public and feed the world. NAAA honored Terry with the 2021 Allied Industry Individual Award for his proven commitment and sincere dedication to farmers, pilots, operators.

2021 John Robert Horne Memorial Award Mikel Hofer, Doland Aerial Spraying, Doland, South Dakota The John Robert Horne Memorial Award is presented to a pilot with five or fewer years of experience as an aerial applicator who has an exemplary safety record and has contributed to the safety of the industry.

enrolled in the aviation maintenance program at Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, South Dakota, and went on to graduate as an FAAcertified Airframe and Powerplant mechanic, also known as an A&P mechanic. He later added to his maintenance credentials by earning his Inspection Authorization, or IA, certificate. Meanwhile, Mikel earned his commercial pilot’s certificate in 2015 with an eye on becoming an ag pilot. Since Doland Aerial Spraying only had one aircraft at the time—a 525-gallon S2R Thrush that Perry flew—the Hofer men decided to rebuild a Weatherly 620A with a Pratt & Whitney R-985 piston engine for Mikel to begin his agricultural aviation career in. He mostly performs local aerial application work in South Dakota and performs all of Doland Aerial’s aircraft maintenance in-house. Mikel’s work in and around ag aircraft is augmented by his work outside it to serve the industry and grow as an ag pilot. He is an elected director on the South Dakota Aviation Association’s board of directors and quickly established himself as a fundamental contributor on NAAA’s CAM 8 subcommittee, due to his knowledge and comprehension of the CAM 8 issue.

NAAA’s 2021 recipient, Mikel Hofer, has flown five accident-free years for Doland Aerial Spraying out of Doland, South Dakota, which until Mikel came aboard was a one-man, one-aircraft operation run by his father, Perry Hofer.

Mikel has been a strategic planner for three Operation S.A.F.E clinics in South Dakota. He also annually attends the PAASS Program, the TriState convention put on by the North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota associations, and NAAA’s convention, where he attends the Aerial Application Technology Research Session and other educational sessions to expand his knowledge.

Mikel graduated from South Dakota State University with an agronomy major in 2014. That following fall he

2021 Opal & Bill Binnion Memorial Award Glenn Martin, Helicopter Applicators Inc., Gettysburg, Pennsylvania The Opal & Bill Binnion Memorial Award is presented to individuals who have contributed to NAAA’s efforts to educate the public about aerial application. NAAA’s 2021 recipient, Glenn Martin, has been a pillar of the ag aviation community and a model applicator for decades. In 1974, Glenn and a partner founded Helicopters Applicators Inc. with a Bell 47 and a nurse truck. HAI grew and grew over the years to the point that it outgrew its original facilities in Frederick, Maryland, and moved to a bigger facility in Gettysburg in 1998. Today HAI has 10 spray aircraft and four heavy-lift aircraft for fire suppression and heavy-lift missions. Glenn has filled many roles within the Northeast Agricultural Aviation Association, from serving as president to running and coordinating the Northeast association’s annual conference. Glenn continues to support the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) and the Northeast AAA wholeheartedly. Notably, he has provided a helicopter and crew for an agriculture-equipment field day put on to educate federal employees that NAAA has co-hosted three times since 2016. These one-day events are designed to educate staff from the EPA, the USDA, and other federal-sector employees about modern agriculture equipment. HAI will also be bringing a Jet Ranger helicopter with booms B 8 | agairupdate.com

to display at the National Ag Day celebration on the National Mall in Washington in March. Closer to home, Glenn gives back to his community and military brethren by participating in Memorial Day parades in Gettysburg and other nearby towns. He does that by providing a restored, non-flyable Huey adorned with decals of the five service branches of the U.S. military and a flag honoring veterans of the Vietnam War to these parades. The Huey procession has been stirring the hearts of armed service members and military veterans since 2016 and has become a Memorial Day tradition for Glenn and his employees. Glenn Martin epitomizes what the Opal & Bill Binnion Memorial Award is all about. He is a great advocate and an even better friend to the aerial application industry.

2021 Delta Air Lines “Puffer” Award Troy Reabe, Reabe Design LLC, De Pere, Wisconsin The Delta Air Lines “Puffer” Award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the design of agricultural aircraft and/or related equipment. Troy Reabe grew up in the ag aviation industry in central Wisconsin, where he got hooked on aviation at a young age. While in school, he worked at Reabe Spraying Service, and it was clear that he had a gift for solving problems and working tirelessly to reach goals. Troy graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with bachelor’s degrees in mathematics, physics,

and mechanical engineering. His engineering career began in 2007 in heavy industry, building complex production lines. His first job did not land him in aviation — his passion — but he was exposed to innovative industrial technologies that would be used later in his first product, the Reabe Quantity Gauge.

Troy developed the Reabe Smart Gate, a computercontrolled, electrically powered dry gate system with manual override. Troy and his father, Jeff Reabe, knew the ag aviation industry needed a solution to accurately measure hopper quantity, so Troy started Reabe Design as a side business to develop that solution in 2010. After years of testing and improving, the patented Reabe Hopper Quantity Gauge was born. Quickly, it became the industry standard for hopper quantity measurement. Troy’s side business eventually grew into a full-time job, and he began working for himself at the end of 2017. By then, a new problem had been brought to his attention: the need for an automatic gate system that was simple, reliable and lighter weight than hydraulic gates. Troy developed the Reabe Smart Gate, a computer-controlled, electrically powered dry gate system with manual override. Adding only 30 pounds to the airplane, it offers more features with fewer parts. weight savings of the Reabe Smart Gate are critical since newer aircraft are being certified with less reference to CAM 8. As a result, the weight of any added equipment takes on greater significance. Specifically, any addons that increase the empty weight of the aircraft result in a direct payload decrease. Products that decrease the weight of aircraft, limit pilot distractions, reduce downtime for system repairs, and deliver accurate product on the field are crucial for the ag aviation industry. The Reabe Smart Gate was designed with these goals in mind. Considering Troy’s innovative equipment designs, the Delta Air Lines “Puffer” Award is well-deserved.

2021 Related Industry Award Eric Rojek, Covington Aircraft Engines, Leesburg, Georgia The Related Industry Award recognizes outstanding contributions by an allied industry member and their company. Eric Rojek fully supports NAAA and the National Agricultural Aviation Research and Education Foundation (NAAREF) and has for years, dating back to his time as the head of sales and marketing at Thrush Aircraft, where he oversaw Thrush’s global marketing strategy, communications, brand positioning and sales efforts. He joined Covington Aircraft as a sales manager in 2020 and is responsible for Covington’s sales efforts on the east coast of the U.S. while assisting marketing expansion projects. Eric has served on various NAAA and NAAREF committees, including as B 10 | agairupdate.com

NAAREF’s treasurer this year. He also currently serves as the Propulsion Division Director on NAAA’s board after serving as NAAA’s Airframe Director while at Thrush. Eric participates enthusiastically and actively — be it at NAAA and NAAREF’s meetings, when he’s interacting with his customers, or when he’s promoting the industry to the media. His marketing training and expertise make him an excellent spokesperson. He also provides solid input on safety, flight and technical matters, helping members become smarter, better and safer operators as new technologies grow. NAAA awarded the Related Industry Award to Eric for his unceasing support of the industry.

2021 Evans-Christopher Operation S.A.F.E. Award Scott Bretthauer, NAAA, Champaign, Illinois The EvansChristopher Operation S.A.F.E. Award acknowledges outstanding contributions to NAAREF’s Operation S.A.F.E. program. One would be hard-pressed to find someone more dedicated to serving ag pilots and the aerial application industry than Scott Bretthauer. While in graduate school, Scott’s ag background steered him into a position with the pesticide applicator training program at the University of Illinois. It was in this role that he first attended Operation S.A.F.E. Analyst training in 2003. Scott quickly immersed himself in aircraft pattern testing. By 2010 he was conducting fly-ins across the

country and had established himself as one of the industry’s foremost Operation S.A.F.E. Analysts. Scott constantly seeks to improve and optimize his trade. For example, he introduced the use of remote-triggered photography at Operation S.A.F.E. events. By positioning a camera directly in the flight path, he is able to acquire an image as the aircraft crosses the flight line. These photo finishes enable the analyst to subjectively assess the spray pattern and use it as a reference when evaluating the string and card data. Scott also pioneered using a lidar sensor with custom software to automatically acquire and record aircraft height. While Scott’s technical contributions to Operation S.A.F.E. are commendable, his analytical contributions are his true calling card. He will not hesitate to go over hundreds of S.A.F.E. printouts with applicators. Whether it is a rookie or a veteran pilot, Scott explains each detail and discusses any concerns he or the pilot has until they are both satisfied. For those reasons and more, Scott is very deserving of the 2021 EvansChristopher Operation S.A.F.E. Award. NAAA congratulates all its honorees. If the 2021 NAAA Award recipients’ stories inspired you, consider nominating someone for the 2022 NAAA Awards. The awards nomination form is available on NAAA’s website at AgAviation.org/awards.

Mabry I. Anderson An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation

The Move Westward — Chapter Three continued…

An Ag-Cat goes through its paces. Intensive research by Grumman Aircraft Corporation led to the development of

As the 1950s progressed, Leland Snow’s success with the original S-1 spurred considerable interest from other commercial firms and some of them began seriously researching the field. Among such firms was the huge Grumman Aircraft Corporation of Bethpage, New York, an old and highly respected firm whose history dates back to directly after World War I.

the Ag-Cat.

In the early 1920s, Grumman put together some very successful flying boats. By the time World War II came along, the company was heavily into the manufacture of military aircraft, particularly the “Cat” series for the U.S. Navy. Hundreds of Navy and Marine Corps pilots, particularly those engaged in South Pacific combat, hold fond memories of these superb aircraft. Grumman’s contribution to the war effort was unparalleled and its reputation secure. Grumman moved very cautiously into the ag aircraft field and spent thousands of dollars and man-hours in the field. Its representatives B 14 | agairupdate.com

questioned operators and pilots, observed conversions being made in custom shops, and generally learned first-hand exactly what the industry felt was needed in an agricultural aircraft. The actual idea for building this plane came from the talented Joseph L. Lippert. He easily persuaded Grumman to allow him to research and design an ag plane and was ably assisted by designer Arthur R. Koch. Lippert and Koch embarked on a tour of the country’s busiest ag flying areas, where they would settle in for periods of several weeks, talking with operators, visiting shops, and generally trying to learn what was wanted and needed. This was perhaps the first time that a major aircraft firm had worked on the premise of building what the industry wanted rather than on selling what it already had! Lippert and Koch visited extensively with operators such as Dick Reade at ➤

Early Grumman Ag-Cat spray demonstration.

Mid-Continent Aircraft in Hayti, Missouri. This firm was destined to become the first Ag-Cat distributor, and Reade was responsible for giving the aircraft its name. Apparently the opinion shared by these two men was that the industry wanted a biplane that was safe and easy to maintain. They then put together a team that designed and built the first two prototypes, known at Grumman as the X-1 and the X-2. The most visible difference between the two models was that the X-2 could be identified by the geodetic rib design in the wing panels. Actual construction was done by Schweizer Aircraft Corporation at Elmira, New York, a firm known for its superb gliders. Light aircraft of this nature utilized fabric covering, rib stitching, and other intricate work not common with most plane manufacturers. At this time, Terrell P. Kirk, Jr. was Grumman’s test pilot, and, as production moved along, he was put in charge of almost everything. In addition to his flying duties, his responsibilities included advertising, public relations, sales, and production. Kirk flew the first flights in these prototypes. In the autumn of 1957 a Type Certificate was issued, and the renowned “Ag-Cat” entered the field. Kirk remained with Grumman in this capacity throughout all of the years that Grumman produced these aircraft. He flew every model ever produced. The first models of this new machine were powered with the familiar 220 HP Continental W670. Shortly after the aircraft’s debut, Gulf Coast Airmotive in Texas began converting surplus 240 HP Continental “tank” engines for aircraft use, and this engine became optional on the Cat. B 16 | agairupdate.com

This tank engine was exactly that-a W670 radial Continental used by the thousands in a military tank during World War II. It was virtually identical to the standard W670 aircraft engine except for a short crankshaft. Numerous firms attempted to use this engine, but it was never satisfactory in its unconverted form due to problems in adapting a suitable propeller to the stub crankshaft. Gulf Coast solved this problem to a degree by utilizing a longer crankshaft. A great many of these engines wound up in aircraft in a restricted category. During the years following its introduction in 1957, thousands of updated Cats were and continue to be built. They have run the gamut from the lowly 220 HP Continental to the most powerful “King Cat” provided by Mid-Continental Aircraft, utilizing the terrific old 1200 HP P & W. Also common today are the Turbo-Powered Cats, plus a wide range of intermediate engines.

Schweizer Aircraft In 1980, Grumman management decided to divest itself of the agricultural line and a transfer of all properties in inventories was made to the original producer, Schweizer Aircraft Corporation at Elmira. Terrell Kirk remained with Grumman, and Joe Kosier, an eight-year veteran with Grumman, went with Schweizer and now heads up its ag aircraft line. Production models are coming off the line regularly. The Cat, it appears, will be around for a long, long time. This can be proved most conclusively from the fact that number one, N10200, built in 1957, is still flying every day, a rather remarkable testimony after 25 years of service.

Reeder Flying Service — An Ag Aviation Company Any Way You Cut It by Bill Lavender

John Reeder holding 1940s Reeder Flying Service poster. The Reeder Flying Service FBO facility at the Twin Falls, ID airport.

B 20 | agairupdate.com

TWIN FALLS, ID — Can you imagine an ag aviation operation with a fleet of 50+ aircraft? It would be a phenomenon beyond most ag pilots’ comprehension; managing and scheduling such a large number of ag aircraft. Not that long ago, just over 20 years, such an operation existed in southern Idaho, Reeder Flying Service, Inc. About half of the fleet was directly related to ag aviation with row crop ag planes, while the larger aircraft, TBMs and B-26s, were used for timber, range land spraying and fire fighting. Today, the company is still in business, albeit with a few less aircraft.

Charles T. Reeder formed his one aircraft operation with a 55 horsepower Piper J-2 to accommodate his flying service as airport manager in Twin Falls. It was 1941, just as World War II was about to begin. During this period, Reeder Flying Service did well, giving rides to a budding aviation-interested public, searching for missing military aircraft, and giving GI Bill training after the war. In 1946 Mr. Reeder expanded his operation to include spraying/dusting with Piper Cubs, N3Ns, Travelairs and Stearmans. In 1957 Mr. Reeder ➤

further expanded the spraying operation to include firefighting, buying four TBM aircraft. Within five years, the company owned 10 TBM aircraft. During that period of growth, the company also began to include helicopters in its operations, the first to be a Bell 47G3 powered by a turbocharged Franklin engine. Operations included spraying range land, row crop as well as firefighting, stretching from the western United States eastward to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Maine.

How does a company begin with one aircraft in 1941 and thirty-five years later grow to more than 50? Expand. Diversify. Search out flying work. Be innovative. Try different types of aircraft. Doing those things, Reeder Flying Service bought the PT6A powered Fairchild/Hiller Porter prototype in 1966. This aircraft was used to haul smoke jumpers and firefighting-related equipment for the Forest Service.

bucket, waiting for the next contract.

Furthermore, during the 1960’s, the company acquired several Super E-18 Twin Beeches, and a DC-3. These aircraft worked alongside the Porter, hauling smoke jumpers and their equipment. By the late 1960s, the fleet continued to expand with the addition of four B-26s for fire fighting, as well as adding five or six Bell 47s. Between 1974 and 1976, five Bell Jet Rangers were added to the Reeder Flying Service’s fleet. These helicopters were used to transport people and perform bucket work. In the late 1970s, three Bell 212s were added for the same purposes. With an ever increasing fleet of helicopters, complimenting the airplanes, Reeder Flying Service increased their presence by working offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico from a base in Galveston, Texas. By now, the Reeder Flying Service aircraft fleet had exceeded 50 units, of which 13 where helicopters. All during this time of growth, the company maintained its spraying operation working row crops, buying its first Ag Wagon in the early 1960s, followed by four more. The company became a Cessna dealer as well. 1973 brought requests from growers for higher application rates than could be handled by the

B 22 | agairupdate.com

Cessnas, Pawnees, and Stearmans. The ag spraying portion of the fleet made the transition to the Ag Cat growing to six by 1976. In 1979 Reeder Flying Service bought the first turbine powered ag plane in the Northwest, an Ayres Turbo Thrush, powered by a PT6A-34. That year, the row crop fleet included eight Ag Cats, one Turbo Thrush and one Cessna Ag Truck. During this time and up until late 1970, Reeder Flying Service was also involved with general aviation flight instruction, aircraft rental and charter, in addition to its agricultural operations. As many as seven Cessna 150s, a couple of C-172s and three C-182s and two Bell 206 helicopters and a Beechcraft Bonanza were used for this activity. The forestry business was looking for even bigger aircraft than the TBMs and B-26 aircraft Reeder Flying Service was using. The company began selling these aircraft eliminating its large forestry aircraft, with the last TBM being sold in the mid1980s. After more than 50 years, in 1997 the ag spraying division of the company was dissolved due to a shorter season and increasing competition. Today, Reeder Flying Service is a full-service FBO at the Twin Falls, ID airport. With approximately 25 employees, the company is heavily involved in helicopter operations ➤

New Technology Saves Lives The FeelFlight Grip has five haptic pins to signal the pilot. In addition, there are four customizable switches. The top switch is often replaced with a four-way trim switch. Note: when the pilot is flying within safe margins, the haptic pins are inactive with no feedback to the pilot. FeelFlight uses a vane type of sensor. The magnetic encoder has an accuracy of 1/20 degree. This precision is required for discrete Vy and Vx feedback. The FeelFlight control module has three vertical LED lamps that signal Vy, Vx, and stall. These values are easily calibrated by pressing the

It is estimated that 75% of fixed-wing agricultural flying accidents occur in the return to target maneuver (RTT). Pilots often do this turn aggressively. Application efficiency can be attained, but the bottom line is, these turns are exciting. Who amongst us doesn’t enjoy doing lazy eights just for fun? So what goes wrong? In a steep climb, the pilot may exceed a safe angle of attack and at the same time add improper rudder, which results in a stall. Often one wing stalls and causes a snap roll and fatal spin. You would never see an eagle accidentally do this. The nerves in their wings are so sensitive to the air over their feathers that they always know if they are flying at Vy, Vx, or close to stall. They do not rely on their eyes or ears for detecting their angle of attack and inclination. They feel it!

accompanying recessed switch. There are also left and right LEDs— these signal inclination. The back of the control module has the inputs and outputs. The FeelFlight will power two grips. In addition, the switches on the grip are easily connected to your device (PTT, etc.) by the brass connectors labeled S1, S2 and S3.

B 28 | agairupdate.com

We are living in the future. Technology abounds! Could our modern technology allow us to create a device that gives any pilot the “feel” a bird has for the wind over his wings? Such a device was recently developed, patented, and is now on the market. It is called the FeelFlight Grip.

CRITERIA 1. Such a device would convey a “feel” of aircraft attitude.— This is attained with pulsing pins in

the control grip, called “haptic feedback.” The human fingers are the most touch-sensitive place on our bodies. The pilot can now feel his angle of attack (AOA) and inclination at all times. 2. Immediate response time.— The hand on the grip receiving the haptic feedback controls the airplane’s AOA. The old technology is visual instruments and audible warnings. However, visual and audio feedback is processed through the brain. This takes valuable time. By contrast, with FeelFlight, the pilot’s index finger is on the stall warning pin. When he receives an imminent stall warning, the response is immediate. It is a reflex. No processing by the brain is required. We are talking milliseconds. In addition, the pilot’s senses are heightened because he is highly aware that he has entered a dangerous maneuver. When the index finger is signaled, the pilot’s reflex is to push forward on the stick – instantly! 3. Inclination — To fly safely, coordinated turns must be maintained. An inadvertent stall in a skidding turn results in a spin. The FeelFlight system signals inclination. This is identical to the ball ➤

instrument. Modern microchip technology provides an accelerometer sensor that detects inclination instantly. Flying with the FeelFlight system demonstrates the immediate response compared to the slow lag in the old “ball- in- the- fluid” instrument. Pulse pins on the left and right sides of the grip signal the pilot to step on the rudder. 4. Angle of attack and Vx — The angle of attack is the required data for maintaining safe flight. It is always constant regardless of weight and balance, density altitude and wing bank. By contrast, the POH performance velocities vary significantly. In our new future, airspeed is obsolete. With the FeelFight Grip, the middle finger receives the AOA signal for Vx. This is generally described as the velocity, or more appropriately - AOA for “best angle of climb.” Significantly, it is also the AOA where the airplane has entered the backside of the power curve. A discussion of the critical aspects of the “backside of the power curve” is required. Say you are flying at Vx, and the power is set for level flight. If you pull back, you slow down even more, and the aircraft now requires more power to maintain level flight. This is often referred to as the “region of reverse command.” We instinctively believe that more power will make us go faster. This is true on the front side of the power curve. Perhaps the best way to visualize why slow flight requires more power is to think of the airplane as “plowing” through the air. Vx deserves deep respect. It will give you the best angle of climb for clearing a power line. It is also the optimum AOA for carrying a heavy load to the designated field. Another example is if you were in a steep valley surrounded by big mountains and climbing to get above the peaks, Vx is the AOA you should maintain. If you found yourself close to a mountain and trying to climb steeper than the mountain slope, your instinct would be to “pull back” to increase your angle of climb. Even at 120 mph, that would likely result in a stall, and you would travel horizontally out of control into the mountain. These concepts become fuzzy when we rely on audio and visual signals and instinct. The power of haptic feedback makes the pilot reaction more definite and automatic. Vx is now not an obscure aviation reference but a significant AOA value for maximum efficiency in flight missions such as aerial application. And with FeelFlight, the airplane tells you by pulsing your middle finger. 5. Must be easy to calibrate. — We hear many pilot complaints about the difficulty of calibrating their AOA instrument. The FeelFlight could not be easier. B 30 | agairupdate.com

The three AOA outputs are also broadcast with LED lamps in the control module mounted in the instrument panel. Next to each lamp, there is a push switch. It is slightly recessed to prevent accidental pressing. To calibrate Vy, simply trim for this velocity and press the corresponding switch with a pen or pencil. Repeat for Vx and imminent stall. It is that easy. 6. Must be precise. — A precise measurement of AOA is essential. FeelFlight uses the vane type of sensor because this is a direct measurement of AOA. The vane turns a magnetic encoder accurate to 1/20 of a degree. In addition, this encoder is weather resistant and extremely reliable. 7. Multiple modalities — Often in equipment such as construction machinery or medical equipment, you will see a warning light blink and accompanied by a synchronized audible beep. This is referred to as “dual-modality.” It greatly enhances the human response to a warning signal. The FeelFlight has the ultimate in modality. It broadcasts visual and audio signals for Vx and imminent stall and “haptic” … the sense of touch. This is a triple sensory modality and is extremely effective. When approaching an imminent stall, the system beeps, blinks, and pulses your index finger to warn you. And these three signals are synchronized with the same pulsing pattern. It is nearly impossible to ignore. These are the seven mandatory criteria to develop the maximum effective instrument for avoiding loss of control. FeelFlight, Inc. has developed such an instrument. It was born from our primary mission - to save lives.

The basic FeelFlight kit comes with everything required to install one FeelFlight Grip. This includes hardware, cables, and a heavy gauge inspection plate for mounting the AOA sensor.

Service Life is a software program that helps report the calculations of cycles remaining on engines and reports airframe parts’ life. Currently, many maintenance operators use spreadsheets to do this calculation.

Natchitoches, LA.

After the initial setup of the vehicles, components and airframe parts, the user will either enter or import the flights, starts and tach hours of the aircraft. This will allow the program to calculate the life of the component and airframe parts. Years ago, I created the desktop version with the help of several maintenance operators because the need was there. The time has come to bring B 32 | agairupdate.com

it online, so I hired a dedicated developer to work solely on the Service Life online software. One of the advantages of moving from the desktop to the online format is the ability to access your data from anywhere. No more dragging clunky logbooks around! Another is the ability to be notified when the life of an airframe part needs to be reviewed. Many of our Chem-Man customers also like to use the software for their own knowledge about their aircraft. It also gives a very neat report to the engine maintenance facility to have precise data to base their work on. Of course, we always design our software from multiple advisers with knowledge in the industry. One of our knowledgeable “consultants” is Sam Ellett with Nor-Wes, Inc., a Chem-Man customer. Here is what he has to say. ➤

The Treasures Of God’s Wisdom And Knowledge

It doesn’t do any good to own a Bible if you don’t know and understand what it says.

“Attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:2-3). The book that God uses to do His work is the Bible. He uses the Bible as the instrument of regeneration (James 1:18; 1Peter 1:23). He also uses the Bible as the means of sanctification (John 17:17). In fact, it’s the only tool He uses (Ephesians 6:17). So when preachers neglect the teaching of God’s Word, they’re undermining the work of the Holy Spirit, producing shallow conversions and spiritually weak Christians. God promises that He will give His wisdom and knowledge to Christians, but Christians must study God’s Word to learn God’s wisdom and knowledge (2 Timothy 2:15). Christians must let the Word of Christ dwell in them richly (Colossians 3:16). It’s impossible for Christians to grow spiritually without understanding what the Bible says about God and Jesus Christ. The Bible is a Christian’s defense against the deceptions of Satan and his demonically controlled worldly systems. But it doesn’t do any good to own a Bible if you don’t know and understand what it says. Satan isn’t afraid of biblically ignorant Christians—sometimes Satan uses them for his purposes. But biblically knowledgeable Christians are less likely to allow satanic powers to control them! Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32). Paul tells Christians to study the Word of God so they can correctly handle the Word of Truth

B 36 | agairupdate.com

(2 Timothy 2:15). Paul criticized the Christians at Corinth because they were spiritually weak Christians (1 Corinthians 3:1-2), and Hebrews 5:11-14 is critical of Christians who are spiritually weak. Peter tells Christians to grow in the knowledge of God’s Word (2 Peter 3:18). It’s impossible for Christians to live their life for God without God’s wisdom and knowledge. Pastors who are not teaching God’s Word to Jesus’ church are hindering the work of the Holy Spirit. “I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words” (Colossians 2:4a). Paul doesn’t want Christians to listen to worldly philosophy or legalistic rhetoric that denies the deity of Jesus Christ and His ability to give them eternal life in God’s heaven. Paul’s desire for Christians is that they have a good knowledge of Jesus Christ, and what He has done for them, so they will not be led away from the truth by false teaching. “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding… Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God” (Proverbs 2:6, Romans 11:33). Knowing God’s wisdom and knowledge helps a Christian to recognize false teaching. The spiritual wisdom and knowledge of God protects Christians from satanic attacks and schemes (Ephesians 6:10-18). Peter said, “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him” (2 Peter1:2-3). “For even though I am absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, rejoicing

to see your good discipline and the stability of your faith in Christ (Colossians 2:5). Paul couldn’t be in Colosse because he was a prisoner in a Roman jail. Even though he wasn’t there in person, he was there in spirit, praying for these Christians in Colosse and every other Christian of that day. Paul had learned from Epaphras (Colossians 1:7) that the Christians in Colosse were steadfast in their godly lifestyle and the stability of their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior was strong—Paul was thrilled to hear the good news. God ordained pastors are always thrilled to hear that the people they have taught are living to please the Lord and are as strong as ever in their passion to serve the Lord. Good news from present and former church members is always received with joy by God ordained pastors. “Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him” (Colossians 2:6). Paul again reemphasis his heartfelt love for these Christians in Colosse. Now that you are settled in your belief that Jesus Christ is Lord of heaven and earth, and you are firm in your stand for Jesus Christ, now just keep on walking in Christ Jesus. The word “walk” here means your daily lifestyle, your everyday thoughts, words and actions. A Christian who has a strong faith in Jesus Christ and a good knowledge of God’s Word will have the spiritual wisdom to keep themselves out of ungodly activities and situations. John tells us that everyone who says he is a Christian should live his life as Jesus Christ lived His life on this earth (1 John 2:6). How did Jesus Christ live His life while He was on this earth? He lived a holy and loving life by allowing the Holy Spirit to control His life. Jesus Christ always did what His heavenly Father told Him to do (John 5:30).

“Having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with thanksgiving” (Colossians 2:7). A Christian’s faith grows as their wisdom and knowledge of God and Jesus Christ increases. Like a large oak tree with roots that go deep into the ground for its nutrients and water, a Christian will find the spiritual food they need for spiritual growth only when they study the Bible in an in-depth method. The deep things of God cannot be understood without the Spirit of God revealing them to Christians (1 Corinthians 2:6-16). Christians need to dig deep into God’s Word, feed on God’s Word daily and make the Bible a major part of their lifestyle. Christians who have their mind constantly on the things of this world will never understand the deep things of God, or how to apply God’s wisdom and knowledge to their daily lifestyle. How can I help you? - Carpe Díem by Martín da Costa Porto Salto, Uruguay I watched a television series with my wife, and I realized that each episode began with the question, how can I help? As individuals and as agricultural pilots, each of us could ask ourselves the same question. When we started our agricultural pilot career, most of us did not have a concrete plan, or we did not have a mentor to guide us through the challenging process. We just had the drive and the love of flight. In the career of an agricultural pilot, four fundamental aspects come into play: economical, professional, ethical and reputational.

ECONOMICAL The role of flight instructors is to teach students how to fly. That is, tell the great things about being a pilot and its privileges; Tell the student that to work in aviation, they will have to go through a process that will demand many sacrifices from a personal to a financial perspective. Training for a Commercial Pilot Certificate costs a lot of money and training as an agricultural pilot is even more difficult. Since there are few agricultural aviation schools, each aspiring agricultural pilot must find a mentor willing to lend him his aircraft so that an agricultural instructor can train him.

How many airplane owners are willing to lend their plane for a stranger to get “experience”?

THE PROFESSIONAL The agricultural pilot training process has three parts, the theoretical phase, the flight phase and the “professional training” phase. The latter is a learning continuum. Being a professional does not only imply obtaining a commercial pilot license but means living as such, inside and outside of aviation. Act like the professional you want to become. In this training phase, it is essential to have a mirror to look at yourself. Identify a professional who can be a reference if you want further advice and mentoring.

ETHICAL Human behavior expert Stephen Covey says that nothing impacts a man’s life more than “not engaging in DISHONESTY.” Ethics is the fine line between building trust or losing it. When we are alone in the cockpit of an agricultural plane, nobody watches us except our conscience. ➤ agairupdate.com | A 31

INTERNATIONAL

In agricultural aviation, credibility and trust are fundamental pillars. If I did not apply a herbicide well, if my product drifted to the neighbor’s field and I did not say anything, in a few days, I will get what young people today call “instant karma.” Ethics and integrity in agricultural aviation (and in life) is “doing what I have to do, even if no one sees me...”

THE REPUTATION “No matter what you think and feel, they will judge you for your actions. For what you have done.” Reputation is the professional cover letter of any pilot. We can all change and be better. Our reputation implies being good at what we do and helping others and sowing the seed of agricultural aviation at any opportunity.

impact on their lives or not, only time will tell and I may never find out. Using agricultural aviation to help others, giving talks and professional aerial demonstrations, will impact our lives will be part of our best memories and personal achievements. In 2022 every pilot’s career begins with his co-workers, friends and more than anything with family. The question of the television series is very valid - “How can I help you?” Martin da Costa Porto is an Uruguayan agricultural pilot and agricultural flight instructor. He has over 25 years and over 12,000 hours of agricultural flight experience and 3,000 hours of flight instruction.

Uphill or Downhill by Ted Delanghe One of the most spectacular aviation incidents I’ve ever witnessed occurred a few years back when I was flying off a farmer’s packed dirt strip oriented north/south, with a one-degree gradient, the southern end being highest. I was flying a Thrush S2R and a friend was flying an M-18 Dromader with the loading area on the north end. We had been flying all morning with calm winds. When the incident occurred, the wind had quickly increased to around 10 kts from the south. That meant the choice was to take off uphill into a headwind, or downhill with a tailwind. How many exams have I taken where there were questions based on much the same scenario, i.e. which is the best way to takeoff! At any rate, I had taken a light load to get the feel of things and had planned on taking off southbound into the wind. I had taxied out behind the fully loaded M18. I thought he was going to do the same I had planned i.e. taking off into wind. But to my surprise he, taxied south down the full length of the runway, swung around, and cranked up the 1000 HP PZL radial to full throttle headed in my direction.

A 34 | agairupdate.com

I shut down, hopped out and started heading in the direction of the grounded M18. The pilot was climbing out, so my excitement came down a few notches knowing that he wasn’t hurt. Luckily the aircraft wasn’t damaged and with the farmer’s tractor we towed it back to the loading area. The following day was fix-it time. The huge ‘explosion’ I had seen was the entire load being unceremoniously jettisoned from the aircraft, as the impact on the far side of the valley had burst open the hopper gate with all 800 gallons pounding into the field and ricocheting upwards. As we sat under the M18 repairing the hopper gate, the conversation naturally turned to what had happened the previous day with the discussion focused on the combined effects of wind and runway gradient. In ag work it is not uncommon to fly off a runway with a noticeable gradient, so the uphill/ downhill choice is often called into question. Ideally we would like to takeoff downhill as gravity would increase the acceleration and land uphill with gravity providing a greater deceleration.

I was still looking at my maps and work order when my head lifted in the cockpit just in time to see the Dromader at the very end of the strip, but with the mains in the air and the tailwheel on the ground. I cannot remember ever seeing an aircraft in that position before. Just off the departure end of the strip was a small valley, which he promptly disappeared into. I recall thinking that nothing good can come from this.

What to do when you work off an airstrip with a gradient? Start with three rules of thumb: • A 1% gradient results in a 10% change in takeoff roll (uphill adds, downhill decreases) • 10 knots of headwind decreases ground roll by 10% • 10 knots of tailwind increases ground roll by 50% (10% for every two kts)

A half second later I saw what I first thought was a massive explosion in the direction of the departing aircraft, followed seconds later by the sight of the aircraft plowing into the soft upward sloping field on the other side of the valley, quickly coming to a stop.

Before getting into the actual numbers, a word of caution. A rule of thumb is a means of estimation made according to a rough and ready practical rule. So it is a good place to start when you don’t have exact measurements, but are to be used with care. ➤

If the zero wind takeoff roll on a level airstrip is 2000 feet, the following scenarios illustrate a combination of winds and gradients and how they collectively effect takeoff roll. Blue arrows indicate wind direction. Figures 1 and 2, both with headwinds, would be suitable options. However with options 3 and 4 the devilish nature of tailwinds is illustrated. Not too bad when light, but once the wind gets up, it adds a whopping number to the takeoff roll. The strip we were using was 2000 feet in length, so option 4 was really out of the question. But option 3 with a 10 kt tailwind, which my friend utilized, was not a lot better. The overall 40% increase (800 feet) now put the ground roll theoretically at 2800 feet, which given the actual runway length, was not a great option either. If the downhill slope in figure 3 was 2%, would that have been better? Not a lot, as while the slope would have decreased the takeoff run by 20%, with the tailwind factored in gives a net increase of 30%/600 feet, for a total of 2600 feet ground roll. Things would be bit tight to say the least. When we were discussing what had happened, my friend said that he simply misjudged the wind velocity, as it had come up very suddenly. Good A 36 | agairupdate.com

rationale to have a portable windsock to keep everyone in the know. If you are sent to a new airstrip where you don’t know the gradient, taxi to one end and read the altimeter, then to the other end and do the same. Dividing the difference by the runway length will give you the gradient. The moral of the story is that tailwinds can make for a bad day, all else considered. If you are looking at takeoff options and are not certain which would be the best, it’s time for a light load to test things out, or even better, to shut the operation down until things settle down. He resides in Regina, Saskatchewan, where he is also a business consultant with a specific focus on aviation and aerospace.

The flexible magnet pad that mounts on the helmet can flatten out to stick to tablets and anything else you can think of. Seat Wanted Looking for an opportunity to move into a seat. I have good experience loading, having worked for a reputable operator in Southern Idaho for 10 months. Growing up on a ranch and working as a herdsman/cowboy as a working career, I understand long hours, little sleep, and hard work. I have my CDL with experience hauling cattle, flatbed, tanker, dump trucks with pups, and utilizing it with the spray operation. I can operate machinery efficiently, boom trucks, auger trucks, forklifts, telehandlers, etc. I can be trusted to run a load pad by myself and know the importance of checking chemical labels, amount of chemical, water source, fuel, etc. I have experience in dry and liquid work, am efficient in switching from dry to liquid and vice versa. We did a lot of government work and know what it takes to take the “show on the road” whether it be for dry or liquid, and making due loading off of remote strips. I can weld, have mechanical aptitude (would love to get my A&P), and learn quickly. The gentleman I worked for is very knowledgeable in the industry and passes that well to his employees, but I also know that there is a lot more for me to learn, and am eager to do so. I have my Single Engine Commercial Certificate with an instrument rating. I am sitting at 500+ hours with 150+ of that being tailwheel. I currently own a Piper Pacer and am building time quickly. If you have any questions or interest, please reach out to me at 406-930-0800. A lot of time I don’t have service so please leave a voicemail and or a text and I will be sure to get back to you.
