100th Year, Let’s Have a Party

We have control over a portion of the accidents in ag aviation. Let’s take those out of the equation.

A 6 | agairupdate.com

In less than two months, on August 3, 2021, a milestone will be reached for ag aviation. The 100th anniversary of the first aerial application of a crop protection product will have arrived. According to the National Agricultural Aviation Association on their website dedicated to celebrating and bringing awareness to the anniversary (agaviation100.com), “August 3, 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of an experiment in Ohio when lead arsenate dust was spread over catalpa trees to kill sphinx moth larvae. Under the direction of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Lt. John A. Macready, a U.S. Army pilot, made the first application by aircraft with a modified Curtiss JN-6 “Super Jenny.” The government then utilized aerial application in the Southern states. In 1922, Curtiss biplanes were used to dust cotton fields near Tallulah, Louisiana to control boll-weevils. In 1923, Huff-Daland Dusters, Inc.—the forerunner of Delta Airlines—did the first commercial dusting of crops with its own specially built aircraft.” I’ve been involved with this great industry for almost 40% of its existence. That’s a very sobering statistic, for me at least. Over the course of the last 40 years, I have seen a tremendous advance in technology and safety. As education and awareness of human factors evolves, and better habits are embraced as the norm, then we (should) have a steady reduction in fatalities and incidents. As a whole, this holds true. There has been a drastic reduction in accidents and fatalities over the last 100 years. But, they are still occurring. And some are the result of not-so-good habits, yet some are

out of our control all together. There will always be accidents in ag aviation. That’s not easy to hear, but it’s the honest truth. Things are sometimes simply out of our control. We do, however, have control over a portion of the accidents in ag aviation. Let’s take those out of the equation. As the season starts in the U.S. for a large majority of applicators, take an extra 10-15 seconds, don’t push and live. The celebration of the agricultural aviation centennial is kicking off as you read this. Events are planned for Oshkosh with live aerial application demonstrations and static displays. Press events and other media productions will all culminate with the Ag Aviation Expo in Savannah, Georgia the first of December. To help kick-off the event, AgAir Update will be hosting its fifth open-house and hangar party on Friday, December 3rd. We are changing things up a bit this year - food trucks and live music will be on site, and a newly paved ramp will keep all the airplanes on asphalt. Shuttles are provided to get you (and your vehicle if you drive) to the hotel. Yes, boiled peanuts will be provided. Watch your email for the event invite and more information. We hope to see you there and in Savannah!

business and be successful without the proper foundation. Reminds me of an excellent book entitled “The E-Myth” by Michael Gerber. The title parallels your article in that it refers to the mistaken idea that just being good at something – flying, baking, welding – doesn’t translate into success once you start a business. Gerber agrees with “paying your dues”. For those starting a new ag aviation business, they need to take off their pilot’s hat (or helmet), and replace it with another where, as you say, the focus is on knowing how to run a business. All the Best, Ted Delanghe Regina, SK Canada

It’s sad to lose a dear friend like that. I lost my friend James Taylor on Aug. 27, 2014, almost seven years ago. I still miss him to this very day. I guess the only thing we can do is be thankful for the time we had to share with them. Will Crump Bolivar, TN

I love your publication. My dad, Dick Rice, was an ag pilot and operator for 34 years in the Missouri Bootheel. Mostly cotton, with a smattering of beans, wheat, milo, and rice. He was in the spraying business as an excuse to have an airport and a shop. He loved restoring old airplanes. Rick Rice Collierville, TN

Thanks for your email, Ted. Yes, especially in ag aviation, you need to first learn to crawl before you can do your job as a professional pilot. I started a flying service after only two years experience. That mistake caught up with me ten years later. Fortunately, I was able to team up with a good mentor. Take care, —Bill

Tri-State Operation

Flying W Aviation Story and Photos by Ryan Mason

Clay Waldrip ran a single pilot operation with a single AT-802A, until the recent purchase of an AT-502B and the hiring of a second pilot to keep up with demand in the Texas panhandle area.

A 12 | agairupdate.com

INTERNATIONAL

Clay Waldrip is what some would consider ‘self-made’ in the ag aviation world. Not born into an ag aviation family, Waldrip grew up in the Northwest Texas Panhandle. Like many before him, Clay spent his summers working on farms. It was there that Waldrip got his first taste of the yellow airplanes, watching them spraying the same crops he tended to as a teenager. It was then that Waldrip began shaping his future towards aviation. He started on the ground at the very airport his business is now based out of, and working for a local operation he now owns, Waldrip learned the ropes of the ag aviation business as a ground crew member. He began taking flight lessons out of Dalhart, Texas, gaining his private and commercial fixed-wing ratings in 2009. He graduated to spraying in July of 2011. Just under ten years later, Waldrip and his wife would purchase the business,

rebranding the company to the name Flying W Aviation on January 1st, 2021. The Dalhart area comprises a wide variety of farming. From potatoes to watermelon and pumpkin farmers, corn, cotton, alfalfa, oats and wheat are all grown in the small Texas panhandle community. Organic corn in the area is a growth industry around the Dalhart area that sees the company spraying over 200,000 acres each year ➤

INTERNATIONAL

across all crops sprayed. A number that continues to grow annually. Spraying organic crops is more of a challenge for ag aviation. Organic chemicals require OMRI certification, which is an expensive proposition for spraying. However, Waldrip has continued to grow that segment of the business as organic corn, soybean, and wheat crops continue to be more and more prevalent in the Dalhart area, primarily used for feed for a large local organic dairy farm. “Liquids and herbicides make up 40% of what we spray, with the other 60% made up of fungicide and miticide for spider mites in corn,” said Waldrip.

Safety Challenges Waldrip stated that in addition to the standard safety concerns of ag spraying being primarily wires in the environment, challenges exist by way of a high-density altitude, which differs from many other areas. Dalhart, Texas sits at 4000 feet MSL. In addition to some of the different regions, the company works close to New Mexico, where altitudes can rise to over 5000 feet, adding another level of complexity to the flight. Drift is also a major factor in the company’s flight environment. Dalhart is a constantly challenging area for wind. “It blows here. It can blow at 40-50 miles an hour here regularly, so that is one of our biggest challenges. Sometimes we have to get up early to beat the wind where we can get dry, hot, and windy very quickly.” In addition to the windy and hot climate, most of the dirt strips he lands at out in the field are short field strips with wires on the northern end. This means that the short strips are one-way in, one-way out strips. Waldrip remains positive in his safety focus, content not pushing the envelope and mitigating as much risk as possible on each flight.

Growth Above: Clay Waldrip and his wife Kendall have lived most of their lives in the Texas panhandle, and are now raising children Magnolia, Fisher and Elanor-Kate and running their business in Dalhart, Texas. Right: Safety is a major priority for Flying W Aviation, which for Waldrip involves in-house and external training along with site surveys, among other safety measures.

A 14 | agairupdate.com

Flying W operates in Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico thanks to their central location that can see an aircraft make it to New Mexico or Oklahoma within 15 minutes from their base in Texas. While the company currently operates a single 2019 model AT-802A, expansion is now underway; Clay has hired an additional pilot, and took delivery of an AT-502B model in May.

INTERNATIONAL

The company mixes its chemicals in an on-site chemical warehouse at their Dalhart base that provides them turnkey ability to go from office to chemical warehouse within the same facility and another hangar operated by the company nearby used for aircraft storage and overflow when needed.

Training Most of the training done by Waldrip and his second pilot has thus far been in-house training. However, the company is looking to expand its training and is entertaining a recurrent turbine course held in Manhattan, Kansas, in the near future. Wintertime offers the opportunity for both pilots to maintain their currency, do IFR work, and operate some charter work.

Onboard equipment In addition to standard radios, the company’s AT-802A features a Garmin transponder with ADSB in and out. For GPS and flow control, the operation uses Insero’s AgPilot X through a mounted iPad in the cockpit, which also integrates with ChemMan.

Due to the complexity of some areas the company flies, Waldrip has all of the farms he works already mapped out. This allows him and his staff to accept a work order and quickly deploy if needed with a direct to setting and a shape file to execute the work if the complexity of the specific job requires it. On using the AgPilotX, Waldrip comments that the ability to incorporate so many new pieces of technology into the cockpit through the iPad interface like Foreflight and now with ADSB in/out real time traffic has made embracing new technology a no-brainer. The double redundancy of having a phone to back it up should anything happen to the iPad ensures you “never skip a beat” in the cockpit, says Waldrip.

Business Challenges Waldrip stated that of the many challenges that come from reestablishing a new business from an existing one has been related to their tri-state location and having to ensure all regulatory requirements are adhered to between the three states they work in, which was a handful to start with. The other challenges have centered around volume and ➤

ensuring there is enough help available when work increases, which is something that has not been a problem to date, thanks to mutual agreements between operators in other parts of Texas. Waldrip has had to call on them occasionally to ensure all needs of customers have been met, which he likens to a mutual aid agreement of him helping them when needed and vice versa.

their own chemicals

Being born and raised in the Northwest Texas panhandle, Waldrip believes in giving back to the community, from hiring high school kids to load and help out during the busy summer months to believing in those with dreams of becoming a pilot and joining the ag world as he did. His next pilot, scheduled to come online with the arrival of their next aircraft before summer, is a born and bred Dalhart resident, growing up working on farms and being around aircraft who will soon be taking the next step and joining the Flying W family as a pilot in the company’s next aircraft. “It’s so hard to get into this business, especially not being a part of it or growing up in it, so if I can help somebody else

in the business to get into the pilot seat, then that is what I’m going to do.”

Operations No business can be successful without support staff to make it happen. Waldrip is no exception to the rule. Waldrip considers himself lucky to have the assistance of Clinton Hale, who oversees the business’s day-to-day operations, from customer booking to load scheduling and everything in between. Waldrip stated that he “was the best thing that came with the business,” keeping everything running smoothly in addition to a second pilot and help from his wife with business operations. Flying W Aviation is a business destined to be handed down in the family, although not for a while to come. However, with the hard work and determination being put in, success for Flying W Aviation seems to be not a case of “if” but “when” for the Waldrip family.

Agricultural Aviation in Argentina has New Leadership

The objective of the Federation is to protect, encourage and promote the development of ag aviation activity in Argentina.

A 18 | agairupdate.com

Argentina’s agricultural aviation board, the Federation of Agricultural Chambers (Fearca) renewed its board of directors recently. The new Board of Directors will be chaired by the current President of the Chamber of Agricultural Companies of the NOA (CANOA), Fernando Camarda, together with Walter Malfatto, member of the Chamber of Aero-applicators of the Province of Buenos Aires (CAPBA). Fernando Camarda is the founding partner of Aerosoluciones and lives in Las Lajitas, in the Salta province of Argentina. Walter Malfatto, born in the town of Bragado, Buenos Aires, will be co-chairing the federation during the next board term. “We are going to continue with the work that we have been doing from the Board of Directors” explained Fernando Camarda. “The objective of the Federation is to protect, encourage and promote the development of ag aviation activity in the country. We will participate in each of the activities that are related to the industrial agricultural sector in order to demonstrate that our activity is essential for the development of the Argentine economy. We will continue working together with the public / private sector with the aim of promoting,

developing and communicating Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)” he continued. “Fearca will always defend accredited companies that employ authorized pilots,” said new vice president Walter Malfatto. “The aerial spraying industry takes care of the environment more than anyone else, I live in the countryside, 70 meters from my house I have a plane stored and I am not going to expose my family if I was not sure what the products are.” Fearca’s new Board of Directors includes President Fernando Camarda (CANOE), Vice President Walter Malfatto (CAPBA), Secretary Juan Molina (CEAER), Treasurer Eduardo Olmedo (CEACH), and three regular members, Francisco Casajus (CEAC), Andrés Fargioni (CEASFE), and Alfonso Rodriguez (CAPBA.) The Fearca board also includes substitute members Mauricio Fargioni (CEASFE), Marcelo Belich (CEACH) and a two member accounts review commission staffed by Ignacio Bocca (CEASFE) and Alberto Torregiani (CEASFE). The board is rounded out with one alternate member, a spot filled by Bruno Del Archiprete (CEAER.)

100th AT-502XP Flies with Saskatchewan Colors Powering the 100th 502XP is the 100th Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-140AG. (Robert Salyers, PWC left; Jim Hirsch, right)

A 20 | agairupdate.com

A distinct yellow and green - not blue - Air Tractor is ready to soar above the fields of Saskatchewan, Canada. The airplane, proudly sporting the colors of the province’s flag, is also the 100th AT-502XP built by Air Tractor. Recently delivered to Accumark Airspray owner Travis Karle, the new aircraft is the second 502XP in Accumark’s fleet of four 500-gallon aircraft. “I found out that it’s the 100th 502XP, along with the 100th PT6A-140 engine to match. That’s super, super cool!” Karle said. For Air Tractor dealer Dave Frisch of Portage Aircraft Specialties, who sold the plane, getting this milestone plane for his longtime customer and friend is rewarding. Having built a successful aerial application operation and aircraft maintenance

shop, Frisch enjoys helping Air Tractor owners maximize their aircraft investment. Delivering a milestone plane makes it even more rewarding. “We have had a long relationship with Accumark Airspray,” Frisch said. “Travis bought another yellow and green 502XP from me in 2019. And that one was actually going to be the 50th XP. But we missed it by one. Karle’s airplane ended up being number 51. But Travis nailed it on number 100.” At Frisch’s facility, Karle’s 502XP was outfitted with the Guia AgNav Platinum GPS, the Garmin GNX 375, and a GTR 225 Comm radio. The partnership between Frisch and Karle dates back to 2013. “I met Dave when I went down to Texas to fly my first Air Tractor home. Just by chance, I met Dave at the airport there. ➤

I had never flown a plane from Texas to Canada,” Karle recalled. “Dave helped me fly back safely and successfully to Canada. And from that point forward, we just became very good friends.”

The right plane for a growing business

This is the second 502XP for Travis Karle and Accumark Airspray.

A 22 | agairupdate.com

The new 502XP comes as Accumark continues expanding its operations. “Over the years, we’ve steadily been getting busier and busier every year,” Karle observed. “I think a lot of that is just timing. Farmers want their crops sprayed in an efficient, accurate and timely manner. They’re running a business, and they see the profitability in using the ag planes versus theirground rigs.” Accumark Airspray is answering the demand. Karle says his operation can spray up to 12,000 acres per day—and now even more with the new 502XP. His main base and maintenance facility is located in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. Karle also operates from 11 satellite airstrips. “We’ll usually have one plane at multiple different locations. We spread them out throughout the province. “We use rotary atomizers for applying fungicide in canola. We have about a week to apply the fungicide during the canola run. That being said, we usually have to bring in at least four to eight other airplanes to help us. And desiccation is about half of our business as well.” Karle says Air Tractor 500-gallon airplanes are well suited for the fields in his area. “We are

very satisfied with our AT-502B airplanes. When I began flying the 502XP and experienced how well it handled during some hot 35-36° C days, I was really impressed. It’s just an amazing machine. The 502XP performs extremely well in our high, hot conditions.” The 502XP is powered by the Pratt & Whitney Canada 867-horsepower PT6A-140AG turbine engine and is paired with a 4-blade Hartzell propeller. The combination of the 4- blade prop and the additional 117 horsepower provides substantially more overall thrust offering excellent performance with a full 500-gallon load in high and hot conditions. All of these attributes contribute to faster ferry times, more acres covered in less time, and reduced pilot fatigue on long days on the job.

At Air Tractor, one milestone chases another The delivery of the 100th 502XP comes on the heels of the 4,000th Air Tractor aircraft delivery, also a 502XP. Orders for the XP have grown steadily since the first was delivered to Oklahoma pilot/ operator Terry Mundell back in 2016. The airplane’s popularity is no surprise to Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch, though. “The 502XP is most definitely an Air Tractor success story,” Hirsch said. “As we often say: ‘When the world demands more, Air Tractor delivers.’”

AgAir Update sits down with Thrush Aircraft’s President Mark McDonald on what’s the latest news since ownership change of the company. How long have you had the reins of Thrush Aircraft?

Left: Mark McDonald, President, Thrush Aircraft.

We acquired the assets of Thrush in early November, 2019, so just over a year and a half. We are halfway through a turnaround plan that covers just about everything – from operations to customer service to product enhancements and, most important, the culture of the company. We’ve had great support from customers, employees, dealers, and suppliers. We’ve already invested millions in inventory, product improvements, manufacturing equipment, and in people to help make this business even better. We have more to do, and the team here has a passion that is tangible. Every day we look forward to proving to our customers why they should have faith in us.

Over that time period, what are some major changes that have been implemented? There have been so many positive improvements here at Thrush, it’s hard to pick the most significant ones. The company is on a firm foundation now, financially, operationally, and with our supply chain. We continue to improve the product, ramp up production volume, bring on new team members, expand service offerings, and improve everything we do. We’ve completed over 200 projects, some large, some small, and I’m sure we will implement another 200 over the next year and a half.

Of those changes, which ones are you the most excited about? Over the next couple of months, we will be introducing new products and services to the

industry. We told people at NAAA that we would be adding the PT6A-140AG to our product offerings. That is not the only new product or service planned for this year. In fact, we have five type certificate programs planned for this year. In general, we are excited about how different the business feels. There is real momentum in every department within the business. The great people of Thrush are enthusiastic and anxious to deliver the promises we’ve made.

What has been the biggest challenge since you have been with Thrush? The GE engine and service issues have been a significant concern for many of our customers. We are bringing options to the market that will help the current situation, but the damage was already done. There’s no perfect solution, but are working with customers to develop a better way forward. The macro-economic environment has created some recent challenges. COVID has had a greater impact to the business this year compared to 2020. Some areas of our supply chain are struggling. Inflation is becoming a national issue and Thrush is being affected like everyone else. We are recruiting from around the country to fill positions in support our growth plan (resumes are welcome!).

Has your vision changed from when you first started until now? No, not really. We knew we needed to learn a lot about the industry, the business, and our customers. What we’ve learned has helped finetune the vision, but not changed it significantly. We still think Thrush has a great future and just needed to be managed differently. Once we agairupdate.com | A 25

INTERNATIONAL

complete the turnaround plan in little over a year, I expect customers, dealers, employees, and suppliers will be impressed by Thrush’s capabilities, performance, and the new products and services we’ve brought to market.

What is the #1 goal of the Company, at this stage? To exceed our customer’s expectations.

What does support for current and prospective owners look like? Thrush always had a great product, but the company’s services weren’t up to the same standard. We’re focused on making sure that our spares, technical support, training, and aircraft quality are all world-class. The first line in our company culture statement says that we will make and keep commitments. We’re not perfect, but we’re striving to create an outstanding customer experience, so that we’re not only known for building great aircraft, but for supporting those aircraft better than any other manufacturer.

A 26 | agairupdate.com

What else can you tell our readers that might answer some of their questions? We’ve heard a few rumors that are untrue so let me provide some clarity. The company is not for sale. We have no activity right now in the military markets. We’re investing in the business and its products. We’re delivering aircraft to various locations around the world and still have slots available for delivery this year.

Any closing comments? We can’t wait to unveil our new products and services to the marketplace and to work with existing and new customers to grow their operations. We’re sincerely grateful for everyone’s support over the past year and a half, and for all that’s been achieved. I can promise the next year and a half will be even better! Wishing everyone a safe and productive spray season.

NAAA Endorses Raspet Flight Research Laboratory’s Continued Efforts to Collect GPS Data Protecting Manned Ag Aircraft from Drones Collect data now for submission this fall

More GPS flight log data is needed for the next research steps to facilitate the safe integration of unmanned aircraft into the airspace in which manned ag aircraft operations occupy.

B 2 | agairupdate.com

Mississippi State University’s Raspet Flight Research Laboratory is continuing its research study on safe operational distances between lowaltitude, manned aircraft and drones. MSU Raspet is now beginning the second stage of GPS flight log data collection from manned agricultural aircraft. Many AgAir Update readers may have donated GPS flight log data during the first stage of data collection from 2017 to 2020. This second stage of GPS flight log data collection is critical to continue MSU Raspet’s ongoing research. Methods for GPS flight log data deliveries remain the same as the first stage. This effort is supported and encouraged by the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) because MSU Raspet’s objective is to understand, model and predict manned ag aircraft in order to educate drone operators and promote safe, responsible drone flight in ag environments. Madison Dixon, the MSU aviation program manager, reported on the progress of the first study at the 2020 Ag Aviation Expo. Over a period spanning three years, NAAA members donated 49,180 flight logs in 20 different states. Some information calculated from the data includes an

average ag aircraft application speed of 139 mph and an average ferrying speed of 132.8 mph. More GPS flight log data is needed for the next research steps to facilitate the safe integration of unmanned aircraft into the airspace in which manned ag aircraft operations occupy. The data collected could have other benefits to ag aviation safety and performance such as average turn radius, decent and ascent angles, etc. As with the first stage of data collection, NAAA and MSU Raspet agreed that all of the information collected is confidential, as confirmed from this language from MSU Raspet: *IMPORTANT* Just as with our previous GPS flight log data collection effort, please know that MSU remains fully committed to protecting the privacy of NAAA’s members who donate their flight logs. The personal information of NAAA members who choose to donate their data will NOT under any circumstances be shared outside MSU. Furthermore, the GPS flight logs themselves will be stripped of all personally identifying information before any research is conducted using the data. Our research would never be possible without these data donations from NAAA membership. We tremendously value and ➤

REGINA’S PERSPECTIVE

Regina Farmer regina.farmer@chem-man.com

The Advancement to Wireless GPS Systems It’s so exciting to celebrate the 100th year of agricultural aviation this year. Recently I came across an older article written by Jim Marvin (2005) from “The Sentinel.” Satloc G4 view from the cockpit.

He wrote “When the first ‘cropduster’ dusted a batch of Catalpa sphinx moths on Aug. 31, 1921, from a World War I surplus Curtiss ‘Jenny,’ the Ohio pilot was flying by the seat of his pants and making history. Armed only with good eyes, a compass and flaggers, the pilots were expected to drop their loads in the correct place, at the correct time and B 6 | agairupdate.com

in the correct amount. In the late 90s, pilots such as Roger Hewett, of Blair Air Service of Lemoore, changed crop dusting forever by using the GPS (Global Positioning System) to find their way to find the exact spots where they needed to be. With GPS - boosted by an on-board guidance system, which corrects the GPS signal from yards to inches

- pilots knew exactly the wind and plane speed and what’s been sprayed and what still needs an application.” I’ve always loved technology and the ability to improve workflow. Although it’s been a long time coming, I’m so proud that our GPS systems are working toward wireless technology. (Basically, no more thumb drives). AgpilotX was one of the first (to my knowledge) to introduce the iPad in the plane where you can open a shape file (polygons) from Chem-Man and import it into their GPS system. The applied log data can then be transferred back in an email and uploaded to overlay the map. The ability to get your shape files remotely has been received very well! We have also been working with Satloc with their G4 systems that have modem capabilities and have now released the ability to wirelessly transfer the shape files at the click of a button. Their official announcement of the wireless interface is June 1. However, we’ve had several customers get on board and love their new work flow.

There are so many options in the plane that my goal is to keep things as simple as possible. We’re working toward a workflow that will minimize the pilot’s interactions to as few buttons as possible. Also bringing more information back will be essential. This will also allow our operations to give shape files to our growers with much more information that many are starting to ask for. It’s coming and it will help change our industry. I can’t wait! Speaking of anniversaries, Chem-Man will also be celebrating our 30th anniversary next year. Besides making so many friends, I’ve really enjoyed watching the advanced evolution of technology throughout the years. From the days of DOS and floppy disks, to the days of wireless technologies, we’ve come a long way. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

DR. SUSAN NORTHRUP

The Flight Path To Transparency

One of my major goals is to increase accessibility to our offices and transparency in our decisionmaking process.

B 8 | agairupdate.com

Every new Federal Air Surgeon has goals they wish to accomplish during their tenure. My predecessor, Dr. Michael Berry, focused on consistency, increasing the number of conditions eligible for CACIs (Conditions an AME [aviation medical examiner] Can Issue), and an increased emphasis on evidence-based decision making. He was successful in all. In fact, the latter enabled us to authorize Class I and II medical for individuals with insulin-dependent diabetes. One of my major goals is to increase accessibility to our offices and transparency in our decisionmaking process. While an airman/controller walks out of the AME office with a certificate in hand 95% of the time, we (aerospace medicine) are aware that there is frustration with how we process medical applications, and we are taking steps to improve. Last fall, many members of the FAA medical team met to identify the top concerns. We invited representatives of the various advocacy groups including AOPA, EAA, and the Aviation Medicine Advisory Service (which represented the concerns of ALPA and several other unions). After this meeting, we outlined two overarching goals. First, issue a reliable, consistent, quality aeromedical decision within 60 days from when an airman or Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) presents for medical certification. Second, when someone does not meet standards for aeromedical certification, use the most effective means feasible to determine if we can still safely certify the airman/ATCS. We meet regularly with our stakeholders and have identified multiple areas for improvement. Here’s an update on our progress. It came through loud and clear that processing

time, when FAA review was necessary, took too long. To reduce this, we have increased overtime hours as needed, and seek to hire additional personnel. We are also working with advocacy groups to educate airmen/ATCSs on sending all the information needed (outlined in the AME Guide and/or a letter from the FAA) and only the information needed. Extraneous material and duplicative records slow everything down. Also note that over 90% of the denials we issue result from failure to provide the requested information.

Another major source of frustration is the inability of an individual to track the progress of their application packet through the system. Another major source of frustration is the inability of an individual to track the progress of their application packet through the system. We are working to enable this tracking. In addition, we want the airman or AME to be able to directly upload documents to the individual’s file. We made some progress in this area for the Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS) program, but it is labor intensive. Expanding these capabilities while protecting privacy and security is challenging, but worthwhile. For conditions that do not meet medical standards, we have identified several new CACI

candidates. We recently expanded the AASI (AME Assisted Special Issuance) list to include selected cardiac conditions for Class I and II applicants; previously, these were restricted to Class III medical applications. Additionally, we have engaged several outside organizations to increase the number of AMEs and improve access. Multiple working groups are addressing specific issues. These include developing pilot videos analogous to the AME minutes and the FAA Safety Team’s “57 Seconds to Safety” videos. We are reorganizing both the FAA Aerospace Medicine website and AME Guide to make navigation more user friendly. We are expanding the frequently asked questions pages to reduce the need to call the help desk. We reviewed the letters that we routinely send, and rewrote thirteen of those which were thought to be the least friendly. While the primary intent of these letters is to inform the airman, they are also legal documents; therefore, we are coordinating them with the FAA’s Office of the Chief Counsel. We remain committed to the “pathway to yes.” Our goal is to certify as many airmen and ATCSs as we safely can, and to do so as quickly as feasible. Dr. Susan Northrup received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a medical degree from The Ohio State University, as well as a master’s degree in public health from the University of Texas. She is double board certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Aerospace Medicine and Occupational Medicine. She is a retired U.S. Air Force colonel and a former regional medical director for Delta Air Lines. She is also an active, private pilot.

FROM THE FAA

LEO M. HATTRUP, M.D., FAA MEDICAL OFFICER

SARS-CoV-2 Vaccines At the beginning of 2020, many viewed COVID-19 as a distant problem. Our world is now very different and how long the “new normal” will last is unknown. However, we have made considerable scientific progress this past year. Medical authorities quickly realized that we needed to develop and approve a vaccine quicker than usual to prevent spread of the virus and to minimize transmission. Vaccines are created in various ways. Live, but attenuated, infectious vaccines such as measles or chickenpox are very effective, with low risk of actually causing the disease. Inactivated/killed agent vaccines are slightly less effective, but do not risk the disease. Many influenza vaccines utilize this approach. Vaccines such as tetanus and diphtheria introduce the inactivated toxin. These prevent the adverse effect. The COVID-19 vaccines include a sub unit of a protein found on the surface of the virus. This protein cannot cause an infection from the virus, but will help our body build an immunity against the virus. When necessary for public health, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has the authority to make emergency use authorization (EUA) decisions that govern the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine prior to obtaining all the normally required data. The FDA closely monitors available data and updates authorizations when necessary. After FDA approval, the CDC gives clinical and general recommendations. These usually start conservative and liberalize as the CDC analyzes additional data that confirm safety and efficacy. In just one year, over 200 COVID- 19 vaccines are in development around the world. At this writing, at least 10 are currently in use worldwide with three available in the U.S. Since granting the first EUA in December 2020, the FDA approved use of two additional COVID-19 vaccines. Over 75 million doses have been administered (as of March 1) in this country alone. By the time you read this, the expectation is for double that number, which is truly remarkable. In general, the FAA does not review a new medication or treatment until one year after full FDA approval. This allows sufficient time for uncommon, but significant, adverse effects to manifest. After careful review of the available data regarding safety profiles, the FAA Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM) determined it could safely shorten this observation period for B 10 | agairupdate.com

the EUA-approved COVID vaccines. Thus far, the clinical data show that both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are safe and effective. The immune system begins to make antibodies after one dose of any of the vaccines. Risk of serious illness and hospitalization is negligible and the vaccines have been 95% effective against death from COVID-19. From the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, the CDC notes that about 70% report a sore arm at the injection site. Over 20% report fatigue after the first dose and almost 50% do after the second dose. Other common side effects include headache, fever, muscle aches, and chills. Data has shown that side effects start approximately 1-2 days after vaccination and last for about 1-2 days after the symptoms first begin. The FDA recently granted EUA to the vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson (Janssen). This vaccine uses a different method, but remains non-infectious and has the advantage of requiring only a single dose. The FAA allows airmen to use the Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J/Janssen EUA COVID vaccines, but mandates a minimum 48-hour grounding after any of these (note: 14 CFR section 61.53 still applies). The FAA will continue to monitor patient response to each vaccine and may adjust this policy as necessary to ensure aviation safety. We will evaluate additional vaccines when an EUA is issued. With over 100 million cases worldwide, it is not surprising that there are multiple new SARS-CoV-2 variants. Fortunately, the vaccines in use appear to significantly reduce the likelihood of hospitalization and death, and reduce community transmission from these variants. Also, simply reducing disease prevalence will decrease the number of additional new variants. The scientific community and industry are evaluating the need for modification of the current vaccines and/or a booster, similar to what is already done for the influenza vaccines annually. Meanwhile, wear a mask, practice social distancing, get vaccinated, and fly safe. Leo M. Hattrup, M.D., received a bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University, a master’s in public health from Harvard University, and a doctorate from Vanderbilt University. He is retired from the U.S. Air Force in which he spent the majority of his career in aerospace medicine. He is board certified in aerospace and occupational medicine. He is a certificated flight instructor and enjoys flying airplanes, helicopters, and gliders.

Conrad Barlow — Mr. Transland Conrad Barlow Harbor City, California Inducted — 2000

Conrad Barlow has always been an active participant in the ag aviation industry, not only as a supplier and designer that responds to the industry’s needs, but as a dedicated individual who has served the industry relentlessly.

B 12 | agairupdate.com

An icon in the aviation industry, there’s probably not another company that better reflects the growth and resolute of ag aviation than Transland, Inc. And, no less to the credit of the success of Transland and mentor of that company than the man known worldwide as Conrad Barlow, Mr. Transland. Born in England in September 1920, Conrad Barlow served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as an Aircraftsman, Second Class (AC2). This was the beginnings in his youth, that lay the foreground for the innovative designs of aerial application dispersal equipment, with his modification to the seat of an F4U for an intelligence officer to accompany the pilot. After the war, Conrad’s fledgling career placed him in New York working in export sales with Smith-Kirkpatrick, a surplus aircraft and Franklin engine supplier. During this tenure, Conrad met George Wing, owner of High Shear Rivet Tool Company, inventor of the High Shear aircraft rivet. Wing, wanting to expand the use of his rivet, decided to make aluminum truck bodies, thus the name Transland. This venture didn’t work, prompting Transland to design and build aluminum hoppers and spreaders for N3N aircraft and become Transland Aircraft. While in the ag aircraft hopper business, Wing became interested in designing a new ag aircraft. He bought the rights to the Ag-1 from Texas A&M and from that design built three Ag-2s. He also began building aircraft dispersal equipment to compliment his hopper building business. From this, Wing needed to develop foreign markets for his Ag-2 and dispersal equipment, here is where Conrad Barlow enters the picture as salesperson for Transland Aircraft. Conrad’s key duty at this time (December 1958) was to develop a market for the Ag-2. The aircraft

was large, powered by a P&W R-985, 450 hp. Later a conversion was developed for the P&W R-1340, 600 hp. Transland Aircraft exhibited the Ag-2 at several trade shows in its marketing attempts. One of the aircraft was lost on a return flight from the World Congress of Aviation in Las Vegas, Nevada. After this, Transland Aircraft decided to abandon the Ag-2 project focusing more on the development and marketing of ag aircraft dispersal equipment. The name synonymous with Transland is Swathmaster; developed by Joe Sellers in the late 1950s, a dual purpose applicator for both dry and wet material, still in use to this day. After the demise of the Ag-2, Conrad hit the road selling the Swathmaster for $1,500, demonstrating it with a movie film of a Stearman dusting. In 1960 Conrad met Leland Snow at a Texas ag pilot convention, where he negotiated a deal to build the gate boxes for Snow Aeronautical. That alliance still stands to this day. However, gate boxes are now built for all U.S. ag aircraft, along with the Transland Firebombing gate, specially designed to answer the needs of today’s fire bomber ag aircraft. This gate box was the first to allow the ag operator to incorporate both firebombing work and normal applications without a change to the system. Also, from Conrad’s earlier work with gate boxes, Transland offered the first emergency dump system, saving untold lives in the ag aviation industry, worldwide. This gate box became so

For the vast majority of today’s worldwide fleet of ag aircraft, somewhere installed upon their airframes, there is a manufactured or copied Transland component. The name Transland, Inc. is known worldwide, along with its driving force, Conrad Barlow. AT-401 Upgrades to Walter by Bill Lavender

Daryl Johnson makes turn over storage barns in Garfield, WA in Cascade Flying Service’s AT-401/Walter.

B 14 | agairupdate.com

GARFIELD, WA — During a recent trip to the Pacific Northwest, I had the pleasure of exercising an invitation to not only visit Cascade Flying Service, but to also perform an evaluation flight of his newly converted AT-401 to Walter turbine engine power; the same aircraft on display at NAAA’s Reno 2000. By anyone’s standards, it was an IFR day, not the most pleasant for an evaluation flight. Cold, wet, and windy, with low ceilings amongst the Palouse Hills. If you’ve never seen the Palouse Hills, I highly recommend you take a drive through them. Your respect for the ground tracking abilities of local ag pilots will be increased several notches.

Driving up to Doran Roger’s Cascade Flying Service in Garfield, Washington, located in the eastern part of the state, I was greeted by veteran ag pilot (has been with Cascade Flying Service for 26 years) Daryl Johnson squeaking the mains of the AT-401/Walter on the rain-soaked asphalt runway. This visit turned out to be about more than just another evaluation flight. I discovered, nestled in the hills, a company that does excellent work rebuilding wrecked ag aircraft. A company that can work with fiberglass to design and install an efficient air inlet system for the PT6 turbine engine, and a company that its credibility is certified as ➤

an authorized Air Tractor repair facility and Walter engine installation center. Slipping out of the misting rain into a warm hangar, remember this was June, Doran Rogers introduced me to the crew at Cascade Flying Service. A tightly run operation, with Daryl serving as spray pilot, test pilot and all-around helper in the shop, Mark Scarbourgh handling the sheet metal and fiberglass work and Brad Akin also doing sheet metal and welding. Doran’s wife, Sandy, handles the bookkeeping end of business. Doran immediately began telling me about his two primary projects; turbine engine air inlet mod and the Walter conversion. The air inlet mod addressed all the obvious points of design that one would have thought anyone else building an air inlet would do. The Walter conversion was mounted to an AT-401 airframe after a fresh overhaul. With the Cascade Flying Service air inlet, air is directed in such a manner as to flow with a minimum of internal turbulence. Other inlets that I’ve seen have boxed off internal edges that undoubtedly must create an air disturbance, disrupting a smooth even flow to the filter. Whereas, the Cascade air inlet is aerodynamically smooth from the opening all the way back to the end at the K&N air filter, offering the least amount of air disturbance as possible. Another item I noticed about the Cascade air inlet was the opening’s position in relation to the prop. The opening sets back from the prop area by five inches. Other installations are much closer. I believe the significance of this is the potential of the prop to create a buffeting against the inlet that could transmit throughout the airframe. Cascade builds up its own fiberglass inlets in

their shop in Garfield. The fiberglass shop is headed by Mark Scarbourgh. Here, from a mold, the air inlets are formed and fitted to work on Air Tractor models 402s and 502s with the PT6 engines, -11 through -34. The air filter is the popular K&N filter. According to Doran, at 82°F outside air temperature, the Cascade Air Inlet lowers the ITT by 27°C at 2% less Ng. The inlet installation also includes a new all aluminum plenum. With the air inlet, the underside of the cowling is cleaned up and should improve cowling aerodynamics, an assumption of mine. However, the Cascade Air Inlet eliminates the nose bowl lights. If an operator needs these lights, Doran says a retracting light can be installed.

The Cascade Air Inlet for the Air Tractor 402 and 502 took three years to develop. The Cascade Air Inlet for the Air Tractor 402 and 502 took three years to develop. It now has an STC effective March 2001. Now for the primary reason I was visiting Cascade Flying Service, to fly their 1993 AT401. Its airframe had installed on it a factory remanufactured Walter 751 shp M601-E11 and a three-blade Hartzel 106-inch propeller. The aircraft (N9091Q) looked and even smelled new. Of course, it only had 460 hours total time. When 9091Q was powered by a R-1340 it had been damaged. Cascade rebuilt the aircraft from the ground up. ➤

B 18 | agairupdate.com

I don’t know the extent of the damage to the aircraft. But, I did see in Cascade’s shop where they had the jigs to rebuild wings and fuselages, as well as “remanufacture” belly skins. During the preflight, Daryl briefed me on cockpit procedures. Cascade designed the cockpit to follow the PT6 installation design as much as possible. The throttle quadrant was typical Air Tractorstyle. Except with the noted ease of the Safe-Start System, the cockpit was for all practical purposes like any other turbine powered Air Tractor. The power settings I used were based on torque. With the cool outside air temperature, the engine easily developed 751 shp and was limited by torque and not Internal Turbine Temperatures (ITT). Most likely, on a very hot day, the pilot would need to monitor the ITT needle as it approaches redline. Daryl advised me the typical torque setting for working to be 50 pounds. That’s what I used with the first empty flight, but found 40 pounds to be plenty of power with working speeds at 145 mph. Returning for a half load of 200 gallons, still 40 pounds was plenty of torque. Only on the last full load, did I feel better using 50 pounds of torque while working the aircraft. With little or no wind, maybe a knot or two downwind, even with the full load, the Air Tractor used only about three-quarters of the 2200-foot

asphalt strip. I’m sure Daryl, with much more experience in this aircraft, breaks ground sooner. An interesting fact about the Walter turbine engine is its resistance to damage from a wire strike. Walter policy is to simply check the crankshaft for trueness, repair the prop as needed, and go back to work. Why this engine doesn’t have the problems a wire strike causes other turbine engines is beyond me. I’ve known of other instances where the Walter engine was stood on its nose, albeit idling, inspected in the field and sent back to work! Maintenance-wise, the Walter engine is about as good as it gets. There are no fuel nozzles to clean. There are no hot section inspections due until overhaul at 2,000 hours for the -E11. Three hundred-hour inspections are recommended, but they are only filter changes, check the starting and rigging adjustments, if needed, the basic stuff. Keep jet fuel in it, and an operator can expect about a $40 per hour operating expense during the 2,000 hour exchange or overhaul period. The Walter powered AT-401 turns easily and manages airspeed surprisingly well. The reason for that last comment is, you must remember I’m attempting to literally ride the Palouse Hills with better than 100-foot rises. A mile run could have a half dozen of these rises, giving a roller coaster ➤

effect. I think the rise and falls (mini-climbs and descents) were close enough together the overall effect to the airspeed was minimal, a consistent 140-150 mph across the field. One thing I noticed not related to the Cascade Walter-powered Air Tractor was the depth perception exercise that is continually going on while spraying the Palouse Hills. You really have to pick out the tops of your hills and focus upon them, making sure the one you are looking at is actually the next hill! I can see where a hill could get disguised along a pilot’s path, especially when the field is a solid color, like with wheat. Of course, I’m sure experience makes this a simple maneuver. Departure, climb-out, cruise and working, the Cascade Walter powered Air Tractor is smooth, just like a turbine ag plane should be. I attribute this to two things; the Hartzel three-blade prop and its position in relation to the air inlet and the 0° angle of incidence for the engine mount. The aircraft tracks straight (yea, a little rudder on takeoff) in flight, and it still needs flaps in the turns and on takeoff. But, it flies like a turbine AT-402; quick, easy and fun. Yes, you can have fun while working, it is OK. Just be careful with this aircraft. It has the ability to put you in an unusual attitude that you may not be able to fly out of, with its excellent power to weight ratio and aerodynamic design. It’s almost like driving a high speed sports car with 55 mph speed limits. Doran Rogers is no new-comer to the ag aviation game. He started ag flying in 1962.

He formed Cascade Flying Service in 1966 and has been operating from the same location in Garfield, Washington since 1969. The shop is a factory-authorized repair station for Air Tractor (since 1992) and more recently, a Walter engine installation facility, as well as running a spray operation. Like other Palouse Hills operations, Cascade Flying Service sprays primarily grain cereals, as well as lentils and canola. The season starts in March with dry fertilizer applications, followed by herbicides on grain. In June and July, the flying is mostly insecticide work with most of the work coming to an end in mid-August with preharvest herbicide applications. This leaves a nice long winter for Cascade’s shop to perform STC’d Walter installations and STC’d Turbine Air Inlet conversions, as well as other ag aircraft rebuilding projects. An ag pilot can climb into the cockpit of a Cascade Flying Service’s AT-401 converted to Walter power as its new owner for less than $300,000. The aircraft will be low time, new paint, new instrument panel and a Walter factory overhauled engine with new Hartzel prop. That’s about as an affordable priced turbine ag plane, in like-new condition, that I’ve seen on the market. Well worth looking into for 400 gallon-ship operations.

Mabry I. Anderson An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation

The Move Westward — Chapter Three Continued…

Excellent Pilots

Floyd “Speed” Nolta of Willows Flying Service in Willows, California, was perhaps the first ag aviator to seed rice by air in 1927. Stacked behind his Travel-Air are sacks of rice to be seeded. Photo courtesy of Nolta family.

B 22 | agairupdate.com

“Speed” Nolta continued to act as chief pilot for the firm, assisted by many fine pilots, including Ernie Moe, Kenny Palmer, Lee Sherwood, “Dusty” Verain, Ray Varney, B. Lane, and Frank Michaud. After World War II, still another Nolta brother, Vance, who learned to fly after the war, officially became part of Willows Flying Service. Willows steadily updated its equipment, graduating to 450 horsepower P & W Stearmans as they became available. All dispensing equipment was designed and built in the firm’s own shop. It was not until the advent of “modem” production aircraft that this situation changed. The firm is now operated by founder Dale Nolta’s son Greg. Greg operates a fleet of Thrushes and Ag Wagons. He is a typical second-generation operator, steeped in tradition, but with an eye to the future. Consistently in the front ranks to improve agricultural aviation, he is presently president of the California Agricultural Aircraft Association and an active member of the National Agricultural Aviation Association.

During a recent interview, a smiling Greg confided, “I expect we’ll operate here for another 54 years or so. I’ve got some young Noltas who can take my place. So one of these days Willows Flying Service will undoubtedly celebrate its 100th anniversary. We expect the next fifty years to be a little bit easier!”

California After World War II Flying from the Imperial Valley across the Salton Sea and out through the Spanish Pass in the San Bemadino Range, a pilot will enter the fabled San Joaquin Valley where towns like Bakersfield, Delano, Tulare, Fresno, and Modesto lie. This has been ag flying country ever since the first California pioneers blazed their trails across this vast, agricultural mecca. One of the first and most influential agricultural aviation operations in the Bakersfield area was Atwood Crop Dusters, run by Bud Atwood, who set up his operation before WW II. His fleet consisted of the usual aircraft of the day-notably Travel-Airs, Wacos, and possibly a Bull Stearman or two. ➤

Cotton was a major crop and Atwood was among the first operators to use new liquid insecticides on cotton. Atwood employed many fine pilots, including Jim French, Hank Bourne, and Ray Varney. Varney was a veteran of the Noltas’ operation at Willows. Atwood also employed Joe Sellers, who became a top pilot and eventually organized Sellers Flying Service at Bakersfield after the war. Sellers greatly expanded ag flying in the Valley. Much of his time was devoted to developing more effective dispensing equipment. One such development was the Sellers Swathmaster, which became a standard in the industry. A radical departure from the ordinary, the Swathmaster was much wider than normal and was designed to dispense either solids or liquids. Sellers eventually sold the manufacturing rights to Transland Aircraft at Harbor City, and the Swathmaster is still being manufactured in essentially the same form. Sellers was influential in the formation of many new operations and the Bakersfield area became a haven for the crop dusting fraternity. Among the familiar names connected with the business in this area were Jim French, Noel Wilson, Bill Putnam, Tom Tierney, Arnold Whisman, and Jack Ferdinand.

Ferdinand initially worked for Jim French before setting out on his own in 1949. At that time, he organized J& J Crop Dusters, which still performs out of Bakersfield, Arvin, and Lancaster. In the lower Imperial Valley, around towns like Brawley and El Centro, the 12-month growing season created a strong demand for agricultural aviation. One of the first operators in this area was Warren Brockman, a veteran pilot who had flown for the legendary Mel Carberry. Brockman operated out of Brawley, which with El Centro, became a center for ag flying. Some of the early post-World War II pioneers in this vicinity were Wally Pankratz, the Stoker Company, and Ken Johnson’s Flying Service. Hugh Littrell was one of Johnson’s veteran pilots. Flax was an important crop in the area and Wally Pankratz recalls using a material called Sinox for broadleaf weed control in flax. “Sinox would kill broadleaf weeds in flax,” says Wally, “and it would also turn your hair bright yellow! You could recognize a crop duster from as far away as you could see him! The stuff wouldn’t wash out. You had to wear it off. You could tell when the weed spraying season was over, because the pilots” hair gradually took on its normal color!” Another Imperial Valley pioneer was Jim ➤

Stearman of Visco Flying Service, Imperial, California, doing night flying on cotton. Pilot is Chuck Quigley.

Vedder, who organized Visco Flying Service, operating out of El Centro and Imperial. Vedder’s ag flying career began inauspiciously when he talked Russ Parkhill of Wenatchee Air Service in Wenatchee, Washington, into letting him apply lime and sulphur to apple orchards in a J-3 Cub in 1946. On his second day, Vedder made an extremely late pull up and hung the Cub in an apple tree, demolishing both the aircraft and his embryonic career with Wenatchee Air. Vedder temporarily gave up ag flying. He bought a surplus B-18 at Jackson, Mississippi, and converted it to carry passengers and cargo. For a year or so, he used the plane to haul freight and Marines out of the San Diego area. In 1947 he returned to ag flying, working with Bill Wood at El Centro and finally with Dick Hyde of Ag-Air, who operated a fleet of Stearmans. In 1951 he organized his own firm, Visco Flying Service, with a Stearman fleet that steadily grew. Vedder had a strong impact on ag flying in the Imperial Valley and was among the first to introduce helicopters to the area. This is a facet of his business that has continued into the present.

“Then one night my chief pilot, Al Lefleur, and I decided to spray a big field with tall eucalyptus trees at the end. We flipped to see who would fly and I won, so Al had to fly first! “I sat and watched and the first thing I noticed was that he cut off the lights as he began pulling up over the trees. When he got back, I asked him why and he told me I’d find out! “I found out all right! We flew low and slow in those days and the lights shining ahead just went about half way up those trees. Without really thinking, I gauged the time to add power for the pulling up in accordance with the point where the lights showed the top of the trees. “But when I started up, I quickly realized that the lights only showed the bottom half! I managed to get over them. But from then on, we had to completely reorient ourselves about adding power, since the lights didn’t carry to the tree tops. “This was probably the hardest thing to learn about night work. Nowadays, with much more power and speed across the field, it doesn’t make nearly as much difference.”

Night Operations

Vedder’s operation was innovative. As early as 1957, he was using bulk insecticide tanks years before this became common practice. A great many fine pilots worked for this firm, including Jack Rye, Myron Ballard, Gene Rye, Chuck Quigley, Tommy Mills, Louie Baker, Al Lefleur, and Cliff Shores. Vedder still operates Visco Flying Service, using both fixedwing aircraft and helicopters. He still has a “boneyard” with several Stearmans and he told me that occasionally one is called into service. Vedder has been a leader in ag aviation and served as president of the National Agricultural Aviation Association in 1976. He still flies regularly himself. Recently, he had to excuse himself from a dinner of industry veterans at 9:00 p.m. to fly cotton for the rest of the night!

Visco Flying Service helped introduce night flying operations, especially on cotton. George Willett of Huron, California, apparently performed the first night applications in 1948 or 1949. According to Vedder, his firm got into the act almost by accident. “What happened,” he explained, “was that during the peak cotton season there was just no way to get caught up. So we found ourselves finishing lots of jobs in the dark, with no lights at all. “We began thinking seriously then about night work, so I went into the San Joaquin Valley and looked over some equipment and found out how to rig up the lights. I came on back home, rigged up an airplane, and we began spraying some easy fields with no obstructions. B 26 | agairupdate.com

MELBOURNE, Florida— L3Harris Technologies (NYSE:LHX) and Air Tractor have teamed to produce the AT-802U Sky Warden™, an affordable, production-ready aircraft designed for airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and other missions in extreme combat environments. Sky Warden is based on the rugged and capable Air Tractor AT-802, which features the largest B 28 | agairupdate.com

payload capacity of any single engine turboprop aircraft. It hosts L3Harris’ world-class family of communications, sensors and airborne ISR solutions. The platform is backed by the company’s extensive turnkey ISR operation experience. The multi-mission platform provides the operator agility and flexibility to identify, track and react to counter threats. It merges the capabilities of larger ISR and armed aircraft into one resilient package. It is also capable of takeoff and landing on unimproved airstrips – allowing the aircraft to be deployed and co-located with special mission operators. “Air Tractor aircraft were developed precisely to operate in austere environments with limited infrastructure,” said Jim Hirsch, President, Air Tractor, Inc. “Our aircraft are built to offer ➤

unparalleled flexibility, essential ingredients for special mission operators.” “Our mission systems, platforms, direct operators and sustainment teams have supported more than 1.3 million combat hours of special operations ISR and attack missions in the past 10 years,” said Luke Savoie, President, Aviation Services, L3Harris. “Combining that experience with Air Tractor, one of the largest turboprop aircraft OEMs in the world, enables our team to design and provide a mature platform capable of operating anywhere in the world and provides the tools needed to support any mission.” Sky Warden’s name commemorates two bestin-class, multi-mission special operations combat platforms. It merges the deep history of the Vietnam era A-1E Sky Raider with the present-day U-28, which uses the callsign “Warden” during combat operations. Sky Warden combines their heritage and capabilities to collapse the stack, providing one aircraft capable of multiple mission roles. A WING AND A PRAYER

Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com

Praying for Our Government Leaders

Christians should be good citizens and set an example for unbelievers.

B 32 | agairupdate.com

Paul wrote, “I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Christians are commanded to pray for our government leaders whether we like them or not. Paul lived under the Roman government that was ruled by Nero; he was a very wicked, vile, wretched, perverted man who persecuted many Christians. Paul was beaten, put in jail, and eventually killed by the Roman leaders. Paul was in a Roman jail and expecting to be killed and he didn’t criticize the Roman government leaders (2 Timothy 4:6-8). Paul did use the government laws to further the kingdom of Jesus Christ when he had the opportunity (Acts 25). “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4). God wants all people to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of God’s truths so His truths will be operative in our society. Whether our leaders are good or bad, cruel or wicked, peaceful or warlike; Christians are to pray for all government leaders for their salvation. Why? Because government leaders play such a tremendous role in our life and in the life of Jesus’ church. We know that Jesus Christ has absolute control over His church (Matthew 16:18); but He allows His church to be under worldly government control to a certain degree. Because of their authority over us we should be

good citizens, and we ought to pray for them. Paul wrote, “Remind them [Christians] to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men” (Titus 3:1-2). Paul doesn’t say pray for their removal from office or get rid of all the leaders who disagree with us. Paul certainly doesn’t say to replace them all with Christians. Paul says to pray that God will save them. Why have many of

UNITED STATES

Jesus Christ’s followers lost that command? Because many Christians have forgotten the importance of bringing lost souls into God’s eternal kingdom! Jesus said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20). Jesus’ command to all Christians is to witness to everyone about Jesus Christ. Christians are to pray for all city, county, state, and federal rulers that are the authorities in America.

Christians are to pray for all city, county, state, and federal rulers that are the authorities in America. Chemical Mixing Streamlined “Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good” (1 Peter 2:13-14). Christians are told to speak evil of no person (Titus 3:2, 1 Peter 3:10). Our words and actions are heard and seen by everyone we’re around. Jesus said, “I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:44-45). Moses wrote in the Law, “You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people” (Exodus 22:28). Saint Francis of Assisi once invited a young monk to accompany him to town to preach. The novice was honored at the opportunity. The two set out for the city, then walked up and down the main street, then several side streets. They chatted with peddlers and greeted the citizens. After some time, they returned by another route to the abbey. The young man reminded Francis of his original intent. “You have forgotten, Father, that we went to town to preach.” “My son,” he replied, “We have preached. We have been seen by ➤

many. Our behavior was closely watched. Our attitudes were closely measured. Our words have been overheard. It was by thus that we preached our morning sermon.” Christians are to be loyal to our government because it’s ordained by God (Romans 13:17). Christians are to honor the king (President) and do what’s right before all other leaders and respect them so that there’s nothing they can say against us (1 Peter 2:17-21). Christians should be good citizens and set an example for unbelievers. Too many evangelical Christians are criticizing our leaders, even though the Bible says to pray for their salvation. It would be much better if Jesus’ church took the money, energy and time it spends in political lobbying and maneuvering and put all our efforts and resources into praying for and witnessing to our political leaders; only God can actually change a person’s thinking and actions. Tertullian (160-230 AD) wrote, “The Christian is the enemy of no man, least of all the emperor. For we know that since he has been appointed by God it is necessary that we should love him and reverence him and honor him and desire his

safety. Therefore we sacrifice for the safety of the emperor.” Theophilus of Antioch wrote, “The honor that I will give the emperor is all the greater because I will not worship him, but I will pray for him. I will worship no one but the true and real God for I know that the emperor was appointed by Him. Those give real honor to the emperor who are well disposed to him, who obey him, and who pray for him.” Samuel said, “Far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you” (1 Samuel 12:23). Jesus said, “Pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:44-45). Not praying for our government leaders is sinning against God!

Reabe Aircraft Improvement Receives STC for 7 ½” Reabe Smart Gate Green Bay, WI— Reabe Aircraft Improvement (RAI) today announced it has received the FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval for the 7 ½” Reabe Smart Gate. The 7 ½” Reabe Smart Gate is a durable, light weight-35lb system that attains a 6-inch gate opening and can run constant and variable rate application. The simplicity of the electric system, 4 components and wiring, limits maintenance and installation time. The system interfaces with all major GPS units. The STC is great news for the customer because it further streamlines installation procedures and reduces cost, while guaranteeing FAA product safety and reliability standards. Safety is paramount to RAI which is why mechanical redundancy is a key feature of the Reabe Smart Gates. It is the only system on the market with constant and variable rate features that retain the lever and all mechanical linkages as a secondary system. This safety advantage allows the gate to be manually operated by the pilot at any time during flight. The primary purpose of the mechanical redundancy is that it provides an added feature and ensures that the aircraft can always work on dry application even if a system error occurs. It also provides the benefit of being able to close the gate manually, in flight, after an emergency dump. The 7½” Reabe Smart Gate retains all of the features that our customers appreciate from the STC certified 5” Reabe Smart B 36 | agairupdate.com

Gate. Slight mechanical modifications were made to increase the force to actuate a 7½” gate. RAI can now serve operators that require heavy application by providing an STC certified product to power their 7 ½” gate box. At RAI, we would not have been successful without our wonderful customer base that trusts our products and our mission to improve performance and safety in our industry. We are grateful to everyone that has provided input to us, which have led to new products and improvements over the years. We strive to serve our customers by making our products the most intuitive, safe, and dependable. RAI’s vision of developing solutions that move the Ag industry forward in efficiency and safety comes from three generations of Ag Aviation experience starting with Reabe Flying Service (incorporated in 1945) to Reabe Spraying Service (founded in 1979). Reabe Aircraft Improvement (founded in 1991) identifies problems encountered by our family’s skilled and experienced pilots and mechanics and works diligently to develop solutions. RAI is proud to announce the newest solution to the Ag industry, the newly STC approved 7 ½” Reabe Smart Gate. Visit ReabeAir.com to access manuals, install instructions, and view Reabe Gate support videos that detail all features from basic to complex, including variable rate. Insect Pests are World Travelers

The adult insect cannot fly and will walk as far as one-fourth of a mile in its lifetime.

B 38 | agairupdate.com

by Harry E. Williams Assistant Entomologist University of Tennessee Extension Circa January 1971 Insects are first-class travelers, and many of them are ‘’one way tourists.” These small creatures are among the most successful immigrants in the world. How many of us could travel alone to a strange country without bags or baggage, adapt to the new environment, and leave many relatives when we pass on? Perhaps you have questions about some of the foreign names of our insect pests. These names tell us a very interesting story about these insects. Insects are the most successful animal on earth when it comes to providing food, shelter and protection for themselves. Their strength, their reproductive potential, and their ability to escape or resist an enemy is unsurpassed. The alfalfa weevil is a native of Europe that was brought to this country around 1900 in a bale of hay. This weevil settled near Salt Lake City, Utah, and was very successful there. Since that time his relatives have moved all across the United States. In 1958 the weevil moved into Tennessee and has been very successful here. This insect is most active during cool, wet weather which decreases the effectiveness of chemical control. Biological control by a parasitic wasp looks very promising for the future. The Japanese beetle is a native of the isle of Japan in the far East. This immigrant arrived in

the United States around 1916 and settled in New Jersey. The Japanese beetle feeds on approximately 300 plants and has found very favorable climatic conditions in this country. The beetle now has infested over 100,000 square miles and will eventually be a pest over much of the United States. Parasitic wasps and a bacterial disease are important natural controls for this pest. The white-fringed beetle is a native of Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. Infestations have also been reported in New South Wales, and the Union of South Africa. This beetle settled in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi around 1936 and has spread as far north as New Jersey at the present time. The adult insect cannot fly and will walk as far as one-fourth of a mile in its lifetime. There are no males in the population. All whitefringed beetles are females and can produce fertile eggs. With favorable climatic conditions that now exist and more than 200 host plants to feed on, this pest can spread over large areas of the United States. There are no known natural enemies of importance. The European corn borer is a native of Europe that settled in Massachusetts in 1917. Since that time it has spread southward and westward over a large part of the important corn acreage east of the Rocky Mountains. This pest feeds on corn, weeds, flowers and vegetables, and has been found in over 200 host plants. The natural enemies of the corn borer have been imported, but to date are not important in the control of this pest except in

UNITED STATES

localized situations. The face fly is a native of Europe. It was first reported in Canada in 1962. Since then it has spread over a large area of the United States. This fly is now one of our worst cattle pests. This fly is extremely annoying to livestock on pasture. The adult flies over winter in heated buildings usually in wall voids or in attIcs. As a result, it is also an annoying pest to the housewife during the winter. A parasitic nematode, which is a natural enemy, has been reported in this country. The success of these travelers is a real challenge to our travel agencies. These tourists travel first-class at a very exclusive, economical rate. They are a con stant, persistent headache to our customs service, and successfully avoid scrutinous inspections to detect their presence. On the basis of her past performance, “Madam Bug” should be most successful with a chain of franchised travel agencies. Editor’s Note: Submitted by Barry Martin/Tennessee Aircraft. NTSB Identification: CEN21LA161 Date: 03/15/2021 Location: Dumas, AR Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-602 (A1); AIR TRACTOR INC AT-602 (A2) Injuries: None On March 15, 2021, about 940 mountain daylight time, an Air Tractor AT-602, aka #A1 and an Air Tractor AT-602m aka #A2, were substantially damaged when the airplanes were involved in a mid-air collision near Dumas, Arkansas. Neither pilot from either airplane were injured. Both airplanes were operated as Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flights. According to the pilot of #A1, he was enroute to return to his private airstrip to reload with agent after he completed an aerial application flight. He was about 500 ft above ground level (agl) when he saw his airstrip and began his descent toward the runway. About 300-400 ft agl, he looked at his map briefly and then looked back out toward his airstrip when he felt his airplane strike something. He stated he did not see the other airplane and was focused on his landing strip. He reported that he and the other pilot usually text each other in the morning to discuss where each would be flying but that communication did not happen the morning of the accident. The pilot stated he saw the airplane earlier that morning and thought he was still flying further away. The pilot stated he was not monitoring the dedicated radio frequency that was

established for agricultural pilots in that area. The airplane received substantial damage to the left wing. According to the pilot of #A2, he had flown that morning and had already completed a couple aerial application jobs. When he saw the other airplane before, he was conducting applications in an area to the west of where he was flying. The pilot returned to his airstrip to reload with agent and looked over his maps to prepare for the next application flight. He took off from his airstrip, made a left turn and climbed to 500 ft in altitude. He flew to the field he was going to be spraying next but explained he had not flown the field in a while and decided to circle the field to review the terrain. He was in a 40° left bank as he turned north at the southeast corner of the field when he felt the other airplane impact his airplane. The pilot stated the other airplane came from the “5 o’clock position” and struck his right-hand step and spray boom with its left wingtip. The pilot stated he was monitoring the dedicated radio channel for agricultural pilots in the area but did not hear any radio communications from the other pilot. The airplane was not substantially damaged. The pilots of both airplanes were able to return to their respective airstrips and land without further incident. Both pilots also reported they do not have ADSB or any other collision avoidance system installed on their respective airplanes.

The COVID Effect on Aircraft Tire Supply: Before, Now and Future by Ken Faire VP of Sales-Marketing Desser Aerospace

You may not be able to get your chosen brand now, there are excellent alternatives that will fit your application.

A 30 | agairupdate.com

We all have had some hard times this past year in this pandemic: scurrying to find common household items like Lysol, 409 and even toilet paper. Whether these were caused by panic buying by the public or as a direct result of workforce shortages on production lines, the shortages were, at least, temporary and the supply chain caught up quite quickly with most of these commodities. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of our everyday LSA, glider and general aviation components, including tires. The supply chain has not yet caught up with demand in general aviation, and we may not see back to normal stocking levels until late summer 2021. And these dilemmas include one of our key components: tires. Looking back at the cause and effect of this dilemma, we use the airline tire supply chain model as an example guide to the current GA tires supply issues. Airlines, both major and regional, were crippled by Covid starting in the 2nd Quarter of 2020, which pushed other methods of transportation to support supply of consumer goods; many manufacturers moved the excess 95% capacity of the airlines/aviation tires to other needed

areas - including truck tires, whose growth in the pandemic required more immediate supply than pre-covid (‘normal”) times. As aviation capacity/ operations weaned, the domino effect started, and workers and manufacturing equipment were shifted to focus on supporting other product modes. This ‘restarting and retraining’ of the workforce, along with the shift to previously focus aviation production equipment back in place, has left a void in the aviation tire supply chain for some suppliers. In effect, it is much easier and quicker to downsize and move capacity than to start up the same production capacity for aviation products. What impact do these shortages have on us? The Bad News: It is likely a product you want and have used regularly for years is currently not in stock. The Good News: There are four 4 general aviation tire manufacturers, with 10 product lines, for all the aircraft that we fly. So, while you may not be able to get your chosen brand now, there are excellent alternatives that will fit your application. Your tire supplier can suggest alternatives to keep your aircraft flying in these uncertain times. We are here to help you decide which product will work the best with you and your aircraft.

Seat Wanted AG pilot (25+ years experience) seeks winter work in Jan/Feb/March and possibly April. A definite team player with excellent references. Looking for a professional operation with wellmaintained equipment. 8,800 hrs total time, 7,800 AG, most in AT-502. No accidents, no claims. Will consider other opportunities as well. Thank you for your consideration. Please email all inquiries to 1spraypilot724@gmail.com or call 386-963-5717, Cell 386-8540761.

Seeking a winter seat or ferry jobs. I am a very ambitious and determined pilot that is looking to grow. I am a dual rated commercial pilot going into my second season as a helicopter applicator. I am nearly ALL turbine time, around 1400 hours currently, mostly rotor wing in UH60M BlackHawk, Bell 206, and OH58A/C. I have roughly 120 hours fixed wing tail wheel time, to include the Turbine Training Centers Air Tractor 502 course, as well as 6 hours of dual turbine Thrush time and instruction. My times are growing every day. I am a NAAA member and I am also licensed in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Kentucky. I have limited herbicide experience, but that is also growing. I am interested in ferrying fixed wing aircraft and ideally I would like the opportunity to have a seat doing fertilizer in timber this winter. I am committed to my helicopter season through August at minimum, November at latest. I would love the opportunity to continue flying for the rest of the year, no preference on turbine or piston. Willing to temporarily relocate. I realize I do not meet most “open pilot” insurance policies, but after speaking to my agent and providing my experience I am indeed insurable for you! If anyone is interested in reaching out to me, I will do my best to make it worth your time. Thank you for reading. Fly safe. Zachary Zacharypourciau@ yahoo.com 225-718-6190 Pilot looking for corn run. Experienced flying an Ag Truck, Ag Cat and Thrush round engine. Over 9,000 TT hrs., 5,000 in ag, 600 TT hrs. on twin engine turbine. Please call Donnie at 229-457-1769 or 229-424-5343 Proven Journeyman, 6000 documented hours ag, FAA 137 Chief Pilot certified, no drifts, no insurance claims, no crashes. Proficient in all ag aircraft but at this point I’ll only consider flying Air Tractors. Rather not be a suitcase jockey, settling with the right operator and possible option to takeover/buyout would be ideal. Please email if interested: flyrightturnleft@ gmail.com South African pilot, 56 year old, experienced on radial and turbine engines. Holder of South African commercial license, single and multi engine, IF and Ag ratings. AG Aircraft types PA 25, PA36, G164B, Air Tractor 301/401/402 B, Thrush 510 S2R-34T. Willing to relocate anywhere in the US or Canada, kindly email: craighhamman4@gmail.com Ag Pilot seeking work with a reputable operation. 1093 TT, 779 Ag, 85 Turbine. Extensive background in agriculture. A&P mechanic with ag aircraft experience. Resume and references available. Please Email: AgFlyer40@gmail.com
