This is a very upbeat time of year, despite all the negativism generated by COVID-19. Fall and spring are in the air, depending on which side of the equator that you live on. Those north of it, generally are glad to see another season come to a close. While those of you south of the equator are ramping up for the season. I can remember when both times of the year were exciting times, albeit for different reasons.

I know here at AgAir Update, it is a busy time preparing for upcoming trade shows, fall ag-aviation events (like the golf tournament in Arkansas), NAAA’s Ag Aviation Expo and of course, AgAir Update’s Hangar Party to be held Friday before the Ag Aviation Expo in Savannah. I look forward, more than you will ever know, to seeing each of you as Graham and I make the rounds this year.

Along with the many positive things happening in ag-aviation, Thrush Aircraft is aiming to certify two new Thrush Aircraft sometime in the latter part of this year. These two aircraft are going to make a mark within the industry; the PT6A-34AG-powered 510P2 and the PT6A-140AG-powered 510P2+.

Be sure to read Graham’s article about these two phenomenal aircraft; “just what the doctor ordered”.

On a very sad note, the industry lost a young ag-

pilot in September. Although he was not flying ag at the time of his aviation accident, it is a great loss all the same. Needless to say, just because you have finished up a successful season with no incidents, the off-season is not the time to let down your guard, even if the plane you are flying is non-ag.

Always be vigilant with any type of flying as it can be most unforgiving.

Every ag-pilot reading this editorial does not want to miss Ted Delanghe’s article about flying in the Region of Reverse Command. If you’ve not heard of this term before, it will be well worth the time it takes to read the article. All experienced ag-pilots will recognize this unhappy place, having been there many times. I remember well when I was operating a 1200 HP Serv-Aero Viper Thrush, the feeling of being in this region, or zone. The 1200 Viper was a very high-performance airplane with its light frame, rag tail and short wings.

You could literally enter deep into the zone of Reverse Command and if you got “uncomfortable” simply push the throttle forward to fly out of it. I know you’ll enjoy Ted’s article as he explains this phenomenon.

I have enclosed a couple of pictures of our first S300C production delivery. The customer is the Department of Agriculture of Senegal and operated by the Senegalese Air Force.

It is equipped with an Isolair spray system and an AG NAV gps system. They will use it to control crickets in Senegal.

Love the magazine and this industry.

My Dad was in this business for many years when I was a kid, and still love it today. Some of my dearest friends have been or are still in the ag aviation business.

Gday Bill Just a short note to tell you how much we would love to have made your hanger party but the pandemic has other ideas!

We really miss the chance to travel and catch up with what is happening around the world – but thank goodness for the internet!

We have had to cancel all of our normal Australian get-togethers and face to face training because of COVID rules and risks of sudden changes from the government.

Our planned Convention for next year (2022) will largely depend on improved vaccination rates and whether we have open State borders…

We have moved all our continuing professional development training for safety and spraying training online and have had more than 100 participants on each of the two recent courses we ran for members.

Our country borders are essentially closed to all but essential workers – making it extremely difficult for our ag and fire pilots overseas (US, Canada and Greece that we know of), aircraft transfers and the like to move freely.

Internally we have States/Territories closing their borders regularly in response to how their neighbours are faring with the delta strain of COVID (i.e. not well) so even domestic travel is fraught. We continue to write to relevant State Ministers trying to ensure that air ag remains on the essential services list – but it has really brought home just how ignorant all our politicians are of how interconnected our economy is – and even perhaps where their food comes from and how.

We are well behind on the vaccination plan because of an ongoing shortage of vaccine and a fair amount of vaccine hesitancy because of the media’s coverage of Astra Zenaca blood clotting and the publics’ zero understanding of statistics, probabilities and risk. Hopefully we catch up next month when Moderna comes on line for the first time.

At the moment, we are all working from home in Canberra as the ACT has locked down for three weeks due to less than 20 daily cases. NSW is completely locked down (other than essential services), Victoria is locked down and the other States have all closed their borders to these States.

Meanwhile, in the real world – we are having a great and long season! Rain, bumper crops across the country, an ongoing mouse plague and plenty of work is helping the industry recover from the long drought we went through. Our fire seasons are likely to be a bit quieter than the monster we had in 2020 – I feel for how you guys are travelling with fires and what appears to be similar government managed problems from fuel load to continual misunderstanding of the power of SEATs and helis and aggressive initial attack….

Anyway – I am sure you will have a great hanger party and we look forward to catching up sometime soon.

About Dromader accident , I am looking for information about STC SA501SW (Hutcherson conversion for PA25) , I have seen many accidents by wing separation in flight and I have seen last STC issuance that limits MTOW to 2100 lbs., very far from the 2900 of OEM; I have asked FAA the reasons for that limit and if there are some information published about that limitacion, with no response. Myyou help me?

Full Recovery I have just read the latest AgAir Update online and seen your column. Wow, my good heavens, I’m glad you are ok and survived the stroke. What a Blessing to know you are still with us and able to enjoy your family and many friends. I hope and pray you make a full recovery back to good health.

Well in the land of “Down Unda’’ we are still toiling away. We have had an unbelievable mouse plague which has been going on for a year now. I think I have baited close to 75000 ha , and it doesn’t look like it’s going to end yet either…….

We also have had good winter rains and most of South Queensland and North New South Wales are fully planted to wheat, barley and chickpeas, what a year to be an ag pilot…..

I thought as you get older one works less, but that’s not the case, I have never toiled so hard in all my life. But take each day at a time and when I have had enough, turn the phone off , have a rest day and go play golf or fish…what it takes to keep up when you get over 64…

Look after yourself and when you are back in top shape, the COVID has left us, it would be great to see you Down Unda again.

Henry Ford once said, “In hard times, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.” This fitting aviation quote could not be more applicable to the newly relaunched Thrush Aircraft - and taking off against the wind is exactly what the company has done with the launch of two new aircraft in their 500-gallon product line, the 510P2 and the 510P2+.

Thrush is no stranger to challenges. In 2012, under different ownership, the company launched a new 500-gallon aircraft powered by the GE H80 turboprop engine. The airframe/engine combination was an instant success, with a newly redesigned engine mount that extended the nose and provided exceptional balance in the flight envelope plus spar caps that had a 60,000-hour life. However, lack of support from the engine manufacturer proved difficult to overcome long term.

Fast forward a little under a decade - Thrush has been “reborn,” and the company’s focus has been redefined. Thrush embraced the design success of the 510G airframe and has launched two new aircraft that utilize the existing airframe and its improved engineering - the P2 and the P2+. The aircraft will use the PT6A-34AG and PT6A-140AG turboprop engines, boasting 750 and 867 shp, respectively. Both aircraft come with a 4 blade

prop designed for the application.

The Thrush 510P2/P2+ engines are positioned on slightly modified H80 engine mounts which extend the nose to improve stability and performance over the 510P model. Additional baggage/tool space is also available in the front of the aircraft. Other design changes in the 510P2/ P2+ are improved air intake filter arrangements that provide quick access to the filter, stainless steel and aluminum hard lines for fuel and oil (eliminating the need to replace hoses in service), and a new electrical harness in the engine compartment. A new air plenum sealing feature that uses “P” seals will provide improved and efficient intake sealing has also been added. The 510P2/P2+ will have new data plates and be available in single and dual-cockpit configurations.

Certification and subsequent deliveries are expected in Q4 of 2021 for the single-cockpit versions and in Q1 of 2022 for the dual-cockpit.

Design concepts were well on the drawing board before the 2020 Ag Aviation Expo in Savannah when Thrush President Mark McDonald held a meeting with the array of Thrush dealers in attendance to garner general feedback and suggestions on the upcoming aircraft. Currently, there are nine Thrush dealers around the globe: ASI Jet (US), Mid-Continent Aircraft (US), North Star Aviation (US), Yorkton Aircraft (Canada), Aerotec (Argentina), ➤

Thrush do Brasil (Brazil), Statewide Aviation (Australia), Orsmond Aviation (South Africa) and Africair (Africa). Final design of the new models began shortly after the convention followed by fabrication and assembly activities. Flight testing on the 510P2+ started in September of 2021. As of this writing, over 32 firm orders and dealer slots have been reserved for the new airframes. Dealers are taking orders for those slots now. Thrush expects to increase production by 50% in 2022.

With this increase in production also comes an increase in support. Over the past 15 months, wait times for parts have decreased from months to weeks on hard-to-source items. According to McDonald, “The new Thrush Aircraft cares about your aircraft from the moment we begin to build it until you retire it.”

In addition to the two new airframe models, Thrush Aircraft is also introducing a conversion program for owners of the 510G, currently powered by the GE H80 turboprop. Owners will

have the option of selecting a new PT6A-34AG engine or one that is owner-provided that must meet specific build specs and be within TBO. The conversion process will take approximately 60 75 days to complete. Airframe refurbishment and annual inspections are also available during this process. The conversions are scheduled to begin in November of 2021, with some orders already placed. In 2022, approved international Thrush Service Centers also will perform the conversions.

The 510P2/P2+ brings impressive performance data. Both aircraft have standard 228-gallon fuel tanks and boast a maximum takeoff weight of 10,500 lbs. Maneuvering speeds for both airframes are 158 mph, never-exceed speed is 186 mph, and the maximum flap extension speed is 157 mph. The single-cockpit version has two baggage compartments rated at 100 lbs and 60 lbs. Both airframes’ useful load is approximately 5,800 pounds, depending on the configuration. The 510P2+ has 117 more horsepower than the earlier

model 510P and lighter empty weight.

Thrush factory test pilot Terry Humphrey, who has flown every model of Thrush aircraft, comments, “Pilots are going to be taken back by the performance of these airplanes. The abundance of power, coupled with the overall balance of the extended airframe, makes the 510P2/P2+ a sports car, but with solid, Thrush flying characteristics. It is one of the best aircraft I have flown.”

The 510P2/P2+ also have a newly debuted 4-blade Hartzell propeller. The 510P2+’s takeoff RPM is only 1900 and, during general working conditions, is reduced to 1700. This, combined with an overall 103” diameter, dramatically slows the prop’s tip speed and equates to a quieter airplane. The 510P2 with the PT6A-34AG is rated at 2080 RPM for takeoff and for working around 1900-1950 RPM. The props are the same for both aircraft.

Full FAA Certification for the new 510P2/P2+ is expected by the end of 2021, and with that will come additional published performance data.

Thrush expects to begin delivery immediately upon certification. The company is hosting an open house on December 10th following NAAA’s 2021 Ag Aviation Expo in Savannah to commemorate the aircraft certification. There, tours will be given, and the opportunity to demo the aircraft will be available to qualified pilots.

The demands of obtaining two new aircraft certifications and rebuilding a company haven’t prevented Thrush Aircraft from focusing on its larger airframe product line, the 710P. The 710P program is slated to have many improvements in the upcoming year..

With the ever-present “headwind” of a company rebirth and the refusal to just go along with the status quo, Thrush Aircraft has undoubtedly taken off into the wind with the launch of two new aircraft that will indeed serve our industry for years to come.

The Region of Reversed Command

“I’ve seen better landings where everyone’s been killed.” That was an aside from one of my earliest instructors, and it happened on a day that wasn’t my finest as a student pilot. If there was something that could be done wrong, I was doing it. Airspeed.

Power. Altitude. Heading. Slipping and skidding.

All felt like they were in a blender, and it wasn’t making a nutritious power drink either.

The “…everyone’s been killed…” part came when I was demonstrating – and not aware of it at the time – that a low, dragged-in approach well below the glideslope just wasn’t setting me up for a greaser of a landing. Much the opposite as I kept adding power (at least I was aware of the fact that our airspeed was way too low), almost to no avail, while the runway was disappearing below the

nose, which kept getting higher and higher on the horizon.

I clearly remember curling my toes as we mushed over the runway threshold, to a resounding “thump!” as my poor aircraft absorbed what to my mind at the time was just a little less than a full-blown crash. And it was all the result of my being held prisoner in the infamous “behind the power curve “ lockup. I plead guilty!

As with all ‘learning experiences’ there was a silver lining. My instructor let me go as far as was safe so that I learned a BIG lesson about what not to do. His philosophy was that early in the game, students need to see the error of their ways, and you don’t get there by mollycoddling them, or by flying perfect circuits through judicious ➤

instructor input along the way. This particular incident happened more than 40 years ago and still stays with me as clear as can be.

So, let’s review the dynamics behind flight in the often misunderstood region of reversed command.

Why is it so named? Take a look at the Power versus Speed diagram. To the left of the best endurance speed is the region of reversed command, also referred to as the back-side of the power curve. To the right is the region of normal command/front side of the power curve. On the back-side, the slower you go, the more power is required to maintain a specific airspeed. This is the reverse of flight on the front side of the power curve, where the slower you go, the less power required to maintain a specific airspeed.

I’ve heard novices (and some experienced pilots as well) say: “Then why fly in that area of flight at all?”. Well, for one, if you’re going to take off or land, you will naturally be transiting through the region of reversed command.

That’s just for starters. In aerial application, you are very often required to fly at airspeeds below best endurance speed – particularly in turns - on account of large initial loads and limited excess thrust during the first few swaths of a field application. This is particularly true with round engines which, while having considerable horsepower, add a significant amount of drag because of their large frontal area. Which means you have less excess thrust to play with.

Sound familiar? We’ve all been there, as in when you pull up off the first spray run turning downwind in a procedure turn for the next swath, and it feels like you’re balancing on a beach ball, controls just a bit sloppy and an aircraft that just feels ‘doggy’. That’s telling you “Easy does it!” here in the region of reversed command, so you don’t enter stall/spin territory, a place you really don’t want to be!

I also found a somewhat novel way to slide into the backside of the power curve. A few years ago I was asked to ferry a turbine Thrush to an ag airstrip some miles away from home base. The destination airstrip was plenty long, but only about 30 feet wide, so I fell into the clever trap of being late in my roundout awaiting the same flare sight picture of the much wider (150 feet) runway at home base. (Remember those illusions of flight?).

But just to add to the fun, I didn’t notice that the airspeed indicator was in knots, not miles per hour as the majority of Thrush’s I had flown. So I happily A 20 | agairupdate.com

set up on final with what I thought was 80 mph. As opposed to what was in actuality 92 mph!

These two factors, plus the fact I had ‘let my guard down’ after a long day flying at home base, resulted in a ‘boing, boing!” porpoising action that had me promptly back in the air, hanging on the prop and wishing I was elsewhere rather than well into the region of reversed command.

Thank goodness for a 750 hp turbine and an empty hopper that saved my bacon (with some prompt corrective action on my part of course).

As the aviation gods have a funny sense of humor, there are a lot of other easy routes into the region of reversed command, first and foremost having little or no experience on a particular aircraft. Another classic example is reefing an aircraft into the air before it is ready to fly. Or how about climbing out of ground effect with an increasing tailwind due to wind shear? Lots of fun for everyone!

In regards to flight behind the power curve, here is a valuable exercise that you can (and should) do with any new aircraft, or indeed at the beginning of each spray season even if you are well experienced on the aircraft. This is particularly true in ag aviation where your checkout can often be something along the lines of “It’s parked behind the hangar. Keys are in it”.

First and foremost, as part of any new aircraft transition, practice slow flight at altitude. You’ll get a first-hand look at how the airplane performs, and how the controls feel as you get well into the region of reversed command. Start in trimmed level flight at cruise power setting. Reduce airspeed In 10 mph increments – stabilizing at each airspeed – and note power setting, and how the aircraft handles at each particular point.

Once below best endurance speed you’ll be in a flight regime you’ll often see when doing fieldwork – again, particularly in the turns - and there’s nothing like “training the hands” to recognize potential areas of the flight envelope that could make for unneeded excitement if you are just a bit inattentive. Ag flying is enormously satisfying just from a piloting point of view alone, particularly because you get very good at ‘stick and rudder’ flying, such as being fully aware of your aircraft’s flight characteristics in the region of reversed command.

For those of us in agriculture who grow, spray, cultivate, and harvest, what we do on a day-to-day basis seems pretty normal. Maybe you’ve done it your entire life, maybe it’s your main multigenerational focus but don’t always know how to communicate the tough topics.

But it is important that we tackle tough topics and clear up misconceptions. If people aren’t comfortable with what we grow, they won’t buy our products. Activist groups are trying to ban what we use because they don’t get it; or they’re worried about food safety or chemicals and that ultimately affects policy. Education is important and I’d recommend never shying away from these topics. Discussing the tough topics gets easier with practice, but policy is influenced by the people.

When people vote incorrectly or try to change our practices- it can negatively impact the environment, global food security, family farms and so much more.

So when tackling misunderstood issues with the general public, I recommend trying analogies that everyone can understand. Like, you know how if you swallow an entire bottle of aspirin you could die? Do you know how if you have a headache and take two of them it’s totally safe and beneficial or necessary? The dose makes the poison and ag chemicals are applied very minimally. Using more than necessary is a waste of time and money!

Now let’s take that idea and apply it to agriculture. Ag planes are used to spray crops to control weeds, insects and diesease. Similar to a garden, everyone knows you must control weeds, tend to the health of the plant and eradicate the

pest or they’ll take over and you’ll lose that crop.

The only difference is that a majority of farms that feed the world are thousands of acres. Would you like to come over and weed all that by hand? I didn’t think so.

Now let’s talk organic.

I know it’s a sensitive subject, but people buy organic thinking they don’t use chemicals may be misled through expensive marketing tactics.

So what about glyphosate as an example? Also known as Roundup and possibly considered the mainstream media chemical boogeyman, it is a very popular herbicide used in millions of gardens around the world to control weeds. On a farm, this is done on a large scale but the minimal amount actually used may shock the average person. For example, 22 ounces per acre is a popular rate of application which is equivalent to less than two beer cans over an area of land the size of a football field!

Now I don’t know how many of you can picture only two beers at a football game? I know I can’t.

or two days a year at the beginning of the growing season, long before the edible part is ever-present.

Timing of application matters and you could also share information about pre-harvest intervals and how chemical usage has been reduced over time or how much safer products have become.

Now let’s talk organic. I know it’s a sensitive subject, but people buy organic thinking they don’t use chemicals may be misled through expensive marketing tactics. Oftentimes organics still use nonsynthetic chemicals and sometimes will reapply more often, especially in hotter, more tropical climates. Does that mean there’s anything wrong with what they do? Absolutely not!

All different types of farm methods deserve respect no matter which they choose. I am, however, tired of certain organizations out there who sure are good at marketing and make it sound like conventional foods are “drenched” in chemicals, which is 100% false. I know this is a sensitive topic for people who only want the best for their health and their families, and that’s important, but people need to learn the facts from farmers and professional spray applicators and

not a source who has never actually worked in agriculture.

I’d like to thank the general public in advance for believing in and respecting the modern farmer.

In my opinion, it’s kinda like being in the military.

Both industries can be extremely dangerous, yet still get a ton of respect by the general public….and that’s important. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you or protects you. Even if you don’t like the political stuff involved, a good old-fashioned “thank you for your service” goes a long way.

Obviously, there are many different ways that crops can be grown, but be proud of what you do!

Hopefully, these couple tips and analogies help you tackle the tough topics - on what you spray, why, when how much and how often. People want to learn where their food comes from and need reassurance that it’s safe. You’re in a position to tell that story, ease food fears, and create dialogue that can help “propel” the industry forward.

For those that don’t know me, my name is Robert Craymer and I work for Covington Aircraft.

I have worked in and around PT6A’s for over 30 years. I still get to hear and learn new things and I always tell everyone that “I may not know everything about engines, but I know people who can answer almost any question.” I’m excited to utilize this column to answer maintenance questions that I hear throughout the year, share maintenance tips and distribute important PT6A updates that we receive.

In this month’s topic, we will be discussing borescope inspections. If you have attended any of the classes that have been given over the years, you know a borescopes inspection is a very popular topic. A borescope is a tool that allows an engine’s condition to be examined in between hot section inspections and/or overhauls.

While borescopes have become more widely available and the cost has become more affordable if you decide to invest in one get a quality borescope that will allow you both to take pictures

and movies. In addition, I suggest one with a replaceable memory card for additional storage capabilities. We have several models of borescope at Covington, but my personal favorite is the Olympus iPlex G Lite. This is not an endorsement of any borescope, just letting you know the one that I generally have enjoyed using. The other tool required when performing a borescope is an engine-specific tube that can be procured through Pratt & Whitney Canada or Covington.

The borescope can be used to inspect the hot section, but it does not replace or diminish the importance of performing normal scheduled hot section inspections. It is intended only to monitor the condition of the internal components. A side benefit of a borescope is being able to recognize things that may need to be addressed prior to a normal repair schedule. It also provides you with documentation when it comes to Pratt& Whitney Canada warranty claims.

A word of caution, DON’T PUT YOUR BORESCOPE IN A HOT ENGINE! It is possible to

cause great borescope damage if the internal parts are still hot. The best practice is to make sure the engine is cool.

What are you looking for when performing a borescope? Basically, I am looking for abnormalities. If I see something on a blade or vane that looks different from the rest, I know that spot needs more evaluation. It is not just cracks that we are looking for, but carbon buildup, buckling or burning, rubbing, erosion, and foreign object damage are also items on our list.

Also, don’t forget to check your compressor for foreign object damage (FOD) as well.

What do we do if we find issues? Although your borescope operator may be highly skilled in interpreting what they see, I suggest that you reach out to people you know have experience and you trust. I receive many pictures from borescopes for analysis. Once I receive the pictures, I discuss my findings with several expert sources prior to offering an opinion. My experience is you can never have too much educated inputs.

When should a borescope inspection be

performed? I have customers that have a borescope performed annually. Some do a borescope inspection in conjunction with a prepurchase, which is always a good idea. Pratt & Whitney Canada requires a borescope inspection when you perform your fuel nozzle maintenance, which is normally every 200-400 hours! If you have a warranty issue arise, your FSR will ask for your periodic borescope results. If you don’t have borescope documentation, it could cause a delay or denial of warranty claims.

Remember, a borescope is a wonderful tool.

Take pictures/videos and keep everything for your records. Talk to people with experience about findings. This will allow you to utilize the borescope to help control operating costs by being aware of what is going on inside your engine.

Finding issues early saves money and everyone likes that.

NAA Museum Host 100 Years of Ag Aviation Celebration

The museum was opened to special guests and ag pilots to tour the renovations of the recent first-phase redesign of the museum.

A great centennial celebration of ag aviation took place at the National Agricultural Aviation Museum and Hall of Fame in Jackson, Mississippi, last weekend. The museum is part of the Mississippi Agriculture & Forestry Museum.

On Aug. 27, the museum hosted a movie night and showed the 2013 Disney film, Planes, featuring the animated ag aircraft Dusty Crophopper.

Afterward, it held a question and answer period for the audience to learn more about the industry from Mississippi ag pilots in attendance.

On Aug. 28, the museum was opened to special guests and ag pilots to tour the renovations of the recent first-phase redesign of the museum.

Covington Aircraft Engines brought a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 engine cutaway showing how the pistons move within the engine to rotate the propeller. AgAir Update, represented by Graham Lavender, showcased its newly donated, cuttingedge digital kiosk of Hall of Fame recipients. At the touch of the screen, museum visitors can learn about the dozens of individuals inducted to the prestigious Hall of Fame and be educated in detail about their substantive contributions to agricultural aviation. Also on display were the educational timeline panels detailing the past 10 decades of agricultural aviation’s historical evolution donated by the National Agricultural Aviation Association.

A special ceremony moderated by Hayes Patrick, the museum’s executive director, included representatives of Mississippi’s congressional delegation (Umesh Sanjanwala with Sen. Cindy Hype-Smith and Jimmie Nichols with U.S. Rep. Michal Guest) and Mississippi Bureau of Plant Industry Director Laura Vollor. NAAA 2021 President Mark Kimmel delivered a superb keynote address summarizing the history of the industry and the many artifacts of the museum representing

the industry’s history. He was introduced by NAAA CEO Andrew Moore who also issued a call to action to the audience to continue to positively promote the industry to the public with the abundance of materials developed this year to aid in that promotion, such as the website AgAviation100. com.

Glenn Holloway, Mississippi ag aviator and NAAA Museum Committee chairman, recognized Dick Reade, NAAA’s first president and a 1992 Hall of Fame inductee. Reade passed away earlier this year and bequeathed a $100,000 donation to the museum posthumously. The donation will allow the museum to complete the second and final phase of its redesign. Reade was recognized for his longtime contributions to the museum and the industry and will be remembered with a special plaque at the museum’s entrance. Accepting the plaque was Dennie Stokes of Mid-Continent Aircraft Corp. in Hayti, Missouri.

Increase Your Safety and Application Accuracy at the New PAASS Program

Upon the performance of each rests the fate of all. If you’re not familiar with this saying, you should be. It’s the PAASS (Professional Aerial Applicators’ Support System) slogan and is used to highlight the damage that a single negative incident can have on the entire agricultural aviation industry. It only takes one accident or drift claim to set off negative media attention and massive government oversight.

That is exactly why PAASS was created: to help reduce ag aviation accidents and drift incidents.

PAASS seeks to do so through education as opposed to more rules and regulations. PAASS has been successful at accomplishing this mission. Since PAASS began, ag accidents have been reduced by over 25%, and drift claims are also decreasing.

At the time of this writing, however, 11 pilots have lost their lives flying ag this season. PAASS continues the effort to move that number to zero, but we need your commitment to do so. Attend PAASS this winter, learn about flying safer and more accurately, and make safety a top priority next season and beyond.

The 2021–2022 PAASS season is loaded with practical lessons to aid all of us in the industry.

The program will begin with a review of the 2021 ag aviation accidents. The reason for reviewing this year’s accidents upfront is simple—it sets the main purpose for the next four hours of training: to stop accidents. Studying and learning from these accidents reminds us of what happens when safety is not a top priority. The lessons can serve to prevent future accidents of a similar nature.

Accidents will be reviewed based on the suspected cause, aircraft type, objects collided with (for controlled flight into terrain accidents) and the state where the accidents occurred.

PAASS will then cover the topic of inadvertent instrument meteorological conditions, or IIMC. IIMC is when a pilot operating under visual flight rules (VFR) inadvertently flies into weather conditions—most commonly fog in ag operations— requiring instruments. From 2011 to 2020, six IIMC accidents involved ag aircraft. Only one of those pilots survived, and PAASS attendees will hear from him so that everyone can learn from his experience.

visibility leads to visual disorientation and vestibular illusions. Vestibular illusions occur when visual references are not available and the inner ear, which handles balance, is fooled because it is not designed for flight. After 20 seconds of continuous movement in one direction, the inner ear “resets” itself regardless of whether the movement has ceased, which leads to the pilot sensing things that aren’t actually happening. PAASS participants will learn how and why these illusions occur, but most importantly, they will learn they can’t be prevented.

Therefore, the best strategy for IIMC is avoidance.

PAASS will cover things all ag pilots should consider before flying to avoid an IIMC accident.

These include their familiarity with the area, the ability to return to the departure runway with a full load, their qualifications and proficiency, and aircraft equipment. PAASS will also cover how to use weather forecasting and basic VFR minimums to avoid taking off when IMC may occur. Pilots need to set personal minimums based on these things and then stick to those minimums no matter the situation.

Ag pilots will also learn about en-route decision triggers, which are predetermined flight conditions based on deteriorating weather conditions that cue the pilot to execute an alternative plan to avoid continuing flight into IMC. The goal is to handle the decision-making on the ground before the pilot is even in the air. The pilot can best decide then, when there’s no customer pressure or other external influences, what they consider to be the conditions at which point they should abandon the mission and turn around. In flight, when those conditions are met, all the pilot needs to do is recognize they’ve occurred and implement their alternative plan. Having decision triggers can prevent plan continuation bias, which was covered in last season’s PAASS Program. Plan continuation bias is a bias toward continuing your original plan despite changing conditions.

While avoidance of IIMC is the best strategy, PAASS will also cover how to recover once IIMC has occurred. Training and proficiency with instruments as well as a properly equipped aircraft are critical to recovery. Three examples of recovery from ag pilots, each with varying instrument flying experience, practicing an IIMC encounter in a flight simulator, will help illustrate this point. To help PAASS participants further learn about IIMC and the importance of avoiding it as the best strategy, they will hear from several pilots who discuss their close calls with IIMC. how spray boom configuration, nozzle setup and a crosswind can impact the uniformity of an aircraft’s spray pattern and the variation in droplet size across the width of the spray pattern. The research done thus far by the USDA-ARS Aerial Application Technology Research Unit reveals that while an aircraft’s spray pattern may have a uniform droplet size distribution when the aircraft is flown into the wind, it can change dramatically when there is a crosswind. A crosswind can result in an aircraft’s spray pattern having a greater proportion of larger droplets deposited on the windward portion of the aircraft’s spray pattern and a greater proportion of smaller droplets being deposited on the leeward side, as opposed to a more uniform distribution of sizes across the whole pattern when the aircraft is flown in-wind. Participants will also get a quick review of how spray droplet size and aircraft patterns are measured and evaluated, and some guidance on how to conduct their own pattern testing using paper spray collectors.

PAASS will finish with a real-life security example where property was stolen from an aerial application business. Participants will hear from the owner and learn how to better secure their operations to prevent pesticide theft and vandalism. There will also be a short segment on using a gate seal to improve dry application accuracy and a question-and-answer session that will test attendees on their aerial pesticide application knowledge.

PAASS presenters will ensure time is available during the entire program for attendee discussions and sharing of experiences involving issues and practices related to attendees’ ag operations. Just as PAASS attendees will learn from the pilots interviewed for the program, they can learn from each other and come away with new strategies and plans to reduce agricultural aviation accidents and drift incidents.

National Ag Aviation Museum Debuts Digital Hall of Fame The digital kiosk will allow high definition photographs, videos and a fulltext history of the inductee.

The National Ag Aviation Museum, located in Jackson, Mississipi recently unveiled its digital Hall of Fame during a weekend celebration of 100 Years of Agricultural Aviation.

The original Hall of Fame was displayed on the wall, just as you entered the Ag Aviation Museum. Dated photos and brief descriptions of the inductees were the only information available to honor those that were so instrumental in agricultural aviation.

After brief discussions with industry members, a digital kiosk was purchased and installed in the museum. This digital kiosk will allow high definition photographs, videos and a full-text history of the inductee to be added to their bio.

Further, the digital kiosk is stored in the cloud, and thus allows displaying of the Hall of Fame anywhere in the world.

Museum staff and AgAir Update undertook the daunting task of digitizing all photos, and then adding to the information available in the Hall of Fame. Plans are in place to have the Hall of Fame displayed next to AgAir Update at the Ag Aviation Expo in Savannah, Georgia. The digital Hall of Fame will also be displayed at most state and regional trade shows in AgAir Update’s booth.

The Hall of Fame will also be available instantly on AgAir Update’s website.

Despite the fact that Charles “Slim” Lindbergh popularized flying m the Midwest, particularly around Lincoln, Nebraska, and in his home state of Minnesota in the 1920s, agricultural flying or crop dusting was a bit late arriving there.

This is somewhat peculiar, because the magnificent, far-flung fields of the great belt of superb farm land between Illinois and Montana were and are a crop duster’s dream. But the time for agricultural aviation had not arrived.

Commercial chemical firms and government experimental agencies simply hadn’t come up with materials suitable for the control of most of the Midwestern insects or weeds that plagued farmers in that region. As a result, agricultural flying was generally confined to the South, Southwest, California.

This is not to say that agricultural flying was

not done at all. Sporadic flights were made by barnstorming dusters at scattered locations and, as early as 1929, at least one attempt at aerial seeding was made in Nebraska.

Harold Wickersham, who still resides in Seward, Nebraska, and pilot friend Don Wright, also of Seward, made a successful attempt at sowing rape seed on a com field in July 1929. According to Wickersham, “July of 1929 was very hot and dry, typical of the summers of that era. I had been out of high school four years and remained home to help with the farming. We lived one mile north of Seward on what was then called the ‘Wake Section.’ My uncle and cousin farmed the north half and we farmed the south. Most of the work was done with horses and a few hired men.

“Among the many friends who I went to school with was Don Wright. Don was an exception. ➤

From the beginning, Dusty believed that flying could be profitable as well as pleasurable.

He was destined for higher things, so he went to Chicago, bought a used Waco biplane, learned to fly it while there, and then flew it back to Nebraska. A plane was a rare sight in those days, especially one piloted by a local boy, so everyone in the community regularly visited our pasture where Don kept the plane tied down.

“At that time, there was a turnip-­like plant called rape that was often planted by farmers as pasture for hogs. Rape had very small, very hard seed that could be broadcast on top of the ground. A little rain would germinate it and it would take root.

Rape seed produced a plant with broad, green leaves something like cabbage, and made very good pasture.

“My dad had a field of com that he wanted to seed with rape, but the com was then about five feet high, so he didn’t know how to do it. Don and I conceived the idea of scattering it from the plane. I well remember that bushel sack of seed that I tried to hold between my knees and a pre-filled gallon bucket of seed that I planned to throw out.

“We took off and sailed down over the com field at about 30 feet off the ground, and I began trying to scatter the seed out from my gallon bucket. The first gallon was thrown out, but then I found that I couldn’t fill the bucket from the sack. As we circled around for another pass, I just threw the bucket over the side of the cockpit and laid the end of the open sack over the side and waited! Once over the field, I began dumping it. It scattered pretty well and, after a nice rain a few days later, it all came up. My dad and our hogs had a great pasture!”

The Seward Journal, the county newspaper, duly reported this incident in its July 18, 1929, issue.

At this time, in Timmonsville, South Carolina, pioneer airman M.B. “Dusty” Huggins was entering the flying game. Before his career was completed, Dusty would play a major role in spreading agricultural flying to all comers of the Midwest.

Dusty’s story reads like a fairy tale. Growing up in the little town of Timmonsville, in the heart of the fabled Pee Dee region, Dusty was first intrigued by railroads as a youngster and vowed he’d become an engineer. The local railroad crew more or less adopted the boy, gave him an engineer’s cap and coveralls, and allowed him to ride in the engine cab while the crew switched the cars or took on coal and water.

One day Dusty overstepped his authority, slipped aboard the engine while the engineer was out of the cab, reached over and released the brake

handle. The big freight train lurched forward, frightening Dusty considerably. With remarkable reflexes, he grabbed the brake handle, yanked it back violently, and stopped the train so suddenly that the pursuing firemen rammed into the train and tumbled head­-over-heels into the coal car! This incident brought an end to Dusty’s railroad career.

As he grew older, he decided to take up something easier, like flying!

Paul Redfern, a prominent barnstorming pilot who disappeared over the Atlantic in 1927 while flying from Sea Island, Georgia, to Rio de Janeiro, flew to Timmonsville in the early 1920s. Young Dusty was hooked!

Dusty’s story reads like a fairy tale. Growing up in the little town of Timmonsville, in the heart of the fabled Pee Dee region.

Redfern landed in a com field that had been freshly cleared and for several days hauled passengers and put on an air show. Young Dusty never rode with Paul. His chance came later, when Timmonsville was visited by another barnstormer, Eric Williams of Greenville. Then Dusty not only got his ride, but also managed to scrape up a few bucks and actually received some dual instruction from Williams.

Dusty had an older brother who was a West Point graduate and an Air Corps pilot. Somehow his brother managed to “requisition” an Army trainer almost every weekend and would tum up in the Pee Dee area to give his younger brother flying instructions. Dusty was an apt pupil and soon became a proficient pilot. After that, he took to the air and really never did come down to earth until his death a few years ago.

His first such purchase was a $400 surplus war bird, that he was never able to fly to Timmonsville! Later, he did manage to procure a new light plane by trading off his wife’s brand new Model T Ford in an even swap!

the Huggins home for quite some time. Dusty’s red­-headed wife did finally manage to get another car and Dusty never ran out of airplanes! To express just how things were handled in the Huggins family, Mrs. Huggins installed a wall plaque in the kitchen that read: “The opinions expressed by the husband are not necessarily those of the management!”

Dusty was lured into crop dusting by the legendary Delta Air Service and went to work for the firm in 1937 with absolutely no training. That summer, he completed his first dusting job over a huge Mississippi Delta cotton farm, in sight of the Mississippi River. The farmer, suspicious of Dusty’s qualifications, stood by during the entire operation, waving his arms as farmers are wont to do. But, according to Dusty, when the five-load job was done, the farmer congratulated him and commented on his skill.

After several seasons with Delta, Dusty wound up back in Timmonsville, where he operated the local airport and organized his own crop dusting firm. Like most of the early aerial applicators, he migrated with the seasons, particularly to the Midwest.

Dusty Huggins is credited with having introduced aircraft work in many spots throughout the Midwest, especially in the fertile Red River Valley of the Dakota country. He traveled regularly to that area before and during World War II, making applications on wheat and other crops with whatever chemicals were available at the time.

However, it was not until after the war that Dusty really came into his own in the Valley. The miracle chemical 2,4-D had made the scene and Dow Chemical Company, which was promoting the product, contracted with Dusty to do extensive experimental work with it on Red River Valley wheat. According to Dow technical man Larry Southwick, Dusty did all of the early 2,4-D experiments and the work was a howling success.

Dusty Huggins became a folk hero in the Midwest and fledgling pilots watched him with awe. Richard Reade of Mid-Continent Aircraft recalls Dusty fondly: “Dusty was my first crop dusting hero. I used to watch him work and I swore that one day I’d be sitting up there doing the same thing. Well, it finally happened, but I doubt that I ever quite managed to approach his skill. He was a natural and there just aren’t many of them around!”

Like most early ag pilots, Dusty had his share of

accidents and destroyed a few planes. Fortunately, he was never seriously injured in an accident, even though he plowed into power lines, struck flocks of ducks in flight, and even collided with a huge bald eagle. The only time he was ever injured in his business, he slipped and fell from the center section while fueling a biplane. This little mishap broke several ribs and laid him up for a day or two.

Dusty spent his lifetime flying, not all of it in agricultural aviation.

He was also a pilot and lieutenant for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Dusty was a yam spinner and told once of an incident that occurred while working in the Midwest. “It was during the war,” he said, “and shoes were rationed. I had bought myself a brand new pair in South Carolina, but my feet got hot while flying. So I took them off in the open cockpit and when I did, I noticed something like a tag in one of them. Without thinking, I held the shoe up in the slipstream and of course the wind snatched it away and blew it half way across North Dakota. So there I was, a thousand miles from home with just one shoe and no ration book! Luckily a kindly shoe clerk in a little town out there believed my story and let me have a new pair.”

Dusty spent his lifetime flying, not all of it in agricultural aviation. He was also a pilot and lieutenant for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. In this capacity, he looked for illicit moonshine stills, chased runaway felons, and searched for missing or lost in the dense South Carolina woodlands and marshes. At least nine such lost individuals, who might have died had it not been for Dusty, are eternally grateful to him and his little Aeronca Champ for appearing at the right place at the right time. Surely he was one of nature’s noblemen and a credit to the agricultural flying industry, which he did so much to foster and perpetuate.

Mission Possible — Advocating for GA in the TFR Process Deep in the FAA sits an organization tasked with a mission. At first glance that mission might sound impossible. But the FAA’s System Operations Security Directorate (SOS) is tasked with balancing the needs of various airspace users within the National Airspace System (NAS). SOS is your advocate for airspace restrictions and governs how they are made and implemented.

As you fly in the NAS, the common constraints you will encounter, often with limited notice, are Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), especially those established by the FAA for security or emergency operations purposes. While TFRs, like most system constraints, are not exactly popular with pilots, it is important to understand that the FAA only uses this tool when needed to meet overriding requirements, including aviation safety demands. The agency consistently works to mitigate the impact of TFRs on pilots and the broader aviation community.

How the Airspace Gets Made SOS is the primary FAA office responsible for air traffic management-related security and disaster response operations. As part of that mission, the SOS often acts as an intermediary between agencies responsible for national security and the general aviation community. Balancing the needs of airspace users, such as the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security, with the need to maximize open access to publicly navigable airspace, is a critical consideration when SOS personnel evaluate TFR requests from these external agencies.

TFRs, including those implemented for presidential travel, provides a good look into the FAA’s continuous work to ensure that TFRs are only used when really needed, and executed in a way that lessens their effect on operators and others in the aviation community.

SOS receives requests for security-related TFRs to cover parades, sporting events, large concerts, and other outdoor events on a regular basis. The FAA is required by law and regulation to establish national security TFRs in collaboration with the Department of Defense or other federal security and intelligence entities. SOS staff partner with representatives from all branches of the military and the federal law enforcement community to thoroughly address and vet each request that is received. All TFRs are designed and approved based upon a stringent evaluation by SOS and security partners, taking into consideration statutory and regulatory mandates, security risks, and impacts on the aviation community.

Everyone’s NAS One of SOS’s core principles is to maximize free airspace access. This fundamental consideration is taken into account with every security TFR request.

SOS routinely works with interagency partners to adjust TFRs as a means to ensure minimal impact to the aviation community. SOS staff works with the requesting agency to include only the essential needs for dates, times, and airspace. At times, interagency requests do not meet the defined, credible security threat criteria for issuing a given type of TFR. In these cases, SOS queries the requester. been received, the TFR is not approved. If there is a credible security threat, SOS issues a TFR and works with the requestor to determine a timeframe when normal airspace operations can safely and securely resume. While personnel from the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Justice have significant input into vetting a TFR, the FAA retains the ultimate decision-making authority.

SOS is not limited to advocating on behalf of aircraft activity at large airports. In discussions with security partners, the FAA also advocates for other operations with a legitimate need to access airspace restricted by a TFR. For example, SOS may seek access for agricultural operations, communitybased model aircraft organizations, or last-minute medical evacuation flights.

Maintaining the security of the NAS also requires notifying pilots of TFRs on a timely basis.

Once a TFR has been published, SOS works very closely with pilot organizations to ensure the information is properly disseminated through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and, in many cases, advisories distributed via the FAA’s Safety Program Airmen Notification System (SPANS) to the widest

audience possible (see www.faasafety.gov/spans to register or log in). “It is our intent to provide notification to pilots of flight restrictions well in advance to prevent any accidental incursions,” says Gary Miller, the Director of SOS. “Such incursions require security partners to dedicate valuable time and resources to intercept unintentional TFR violators that could be used to mitigate a legitimate threat,” he adds. As an added layer to increase public awareness, SOS routinely works with the FAA’s Public Affairs office to communicate anticipated TFRs using the news media.

SOS’s mission isn’t impossible but it is challenging. Recently I was having a conversation with our lead developer Cassie, and I said, “Did you ever think that our careers would be in chemical applications development?” She smiled and said, “Never in a million years”. We both are alike in that we really love what we do, and we agreed that we will always be updating our software to meet the requests and ever-changing technology.

One of the fascinating things that I’ve found about this industry is that no matter what region you’re from (including other countries), the accents or languages may be different, but everyone seems to feel that “connection” and that we’re doing something special to feed the world, get the job done and make it home safely.

I have recently been chatting on the translator app “Whatsapp” with a young pilot from Brazil.

They fly 12 planes and are fighting the awful fires in Brazil. They also do chemical applications with ground rigs. It was fascinating doing a demo on our computers and seeing Chem-Man displayed in Portuguese (The software is translated by the language on his computer). At the same time, we’re using the app to communicate. For a sixty-year-old woman, I found this challenging but very exciting at the same time.

We also did another webinar with a couple from Australia, and it was so fun to hear their accents.

Of course, I always get teased about my southern accent and I have fun with it. Through technology, our world has become a smaller place and easier to communicate.

Our company is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary next year! Communication was a bit harder in 1992 when we got started. With no cell phones, I was always having to forward my calls.

The support was harder because you couldn’t log in

to help the customer. I was always asking “Can you mail me a backup?” (Many times, the disks went bad after going through the mail).

Sometimes people ask me “When are you planning on retiring?” I always laugh and say “I love what I do! Why would I want to retire?” My dad retired in his eighties, and I don’t plan on retiring any time soon. Can’t wait to see what the next 30 years bring!

FARMVILLE, NC — On a recent trip, I stopped in east central North Carolina after a long flight from mid-state Illinois. Walking around after departing the aircraft, I looked closely at the bottoms of shoes; no, there wasn’t any tar on them, although I was pretty sure I was in the Tarheel state!

Only joking, I asked my hosts Wayne and Lou Slaughter of Wa-Lu Aviation why in the world would Tarheel be a nickname for a football team and for other references to the state. It was explained to me that many years ago large quantities of tar were mined in North Carolina and inadvertently the stuff found its way to the boot heals of the workers, thus the name Tarheel.

It had been awhile since visiting North Carolina.

The last time was three or four years ago for an article about Gene and Elby Powers. During that trip I reminisced about the summer in 1974 when

I flew for an operator (Tom Stancil) in nearby Oriental, North Carolina, even driving by the long since deserted airstrip to find the Airstream mobile home used for an office abandoned in the bushes.

Farmville is somewhat west of coastal Oriental, however I do recall making a long ferry flight or two for a couple of small tobacco fields (five and ten acres each in a 800 hp Thrush) during that summer. However, I just missed meeting Wayne Slaughter by about two years. Wayne began flying ag in 1976, working for Jim Craft Spray Service in Farmville. In 1987 he and wife Lou, formed Wa-Lu Aviation and have been at it ever since.

From Flanagan Field, Wa-Lu Aviation works from a sod strip shared with local Farmville general aviation pilots. If you are a Tri-Pacer buff or a Piper Cub enthusiast, undoubtedly you will see several interesting aircraft with a visit to the Slaughters. ➤

One particular Tri-Pacer Wayne is restoring looks better than a new one; a genuine “dope and fabric” shop.

There still remains some tobacco acreage in Farmville, but true to its reputation, tobacco flying is made up of patches. The mainstay for ag flying in this region of North Carolina is cotton. Work begins in late June, peaking in July and August and continues to the first frost in early November. Even so, the area has suffered three bad years, backto-back, from a mix of problems. In 1999 cotton experienced its worst set back with the flood from Hurricane Floyd. Fortunately, the Slaughter’s home and Flanagan Field were on high ground, but their neighbors weren’t so lucky.

Like so many ag aviation companies, Wa-Lu Aviation has looked and found an alternative to cotton. By no means a replacement for the crop, spraying a block of pine trees has helped make up some of the losses, adding tach hours to the AT-301 and two Ag Trucks.

It can never be said those in the ag aviation business aren’t creative, and when it comes to addressing a problem, that creativeness really blooms. I’ve found this true, not only in the United States, but from agav operations worldwide. One problem that many companies are facing is the competitiveness of the ground machine, or rather being treated like a “911” service. Wa-Lu Aviation has addressed this problem in a rather unique and creative way.

The side bar to this article pretty well sums it all up with a direct reprint of their letter.

Most everyone knows the Slaughters from their work in the NAAA. Wayne served on the executive committee of the NAAA, finally becoming president in 1996. Lou served similarly for the WNAAA, becoming its president in 1997. But, not before Wayne had worked in the NCAAA as its president in 1991, 1992, and 1993. Wayne also served as president of NAAREF in 2000. With all their effort, time and dedication to the national association, Wayne and Lou may be taking a break from their work with NAAA. “NAAA work is something everyone should become involved in and something each should allow to pass over them for new blood to enter”, Wayne says. He continues explaining this is his last year serving the designated five years on the pastpresident’s advisory committee. Now, he believes, is as good as time as any to let others step up to the plate and serve the association. And like always, and as everyone who knows the Slaughters, Lou is of the same opinion as Wayne. Everyone has benefited from their efforts, and I doubt that we’ve seen the last of them, maybe just a brief resting period; right Wayne and Lou?

Is Your Name Written In God’s Book Of Life?

There are verses in the Bible that indicate that there are people who have made a verbal commitment to Jesus Christ, but their verbal commitment is not backed up by a lifestyle committed to godly living.

“Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14-15). Many people in the world today are on a fast-track to worshiping the Antichrist, and they don’t even know it. It’s only a small step from worshiping sports idols, music idols, movie stars, government leaders and the material things of this world, to worshiping the Antichrist.

Someday the Antichrist will imitate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and, “All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8). The book of life is mentioned several times in the Bible, and there are arguments as to whether a person that professes to be Christian can have their name taken out of the book of life because of a sinful and ungodly lifestyle. No one on this earth knows for sure how all this works, but God has it all under His control.

Paul wrote, “There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” (2 Timothy 3:1-4). This is a good picture of what this ungodly world looks and acts like today!

In many segments of the Christian community there’s an easy belief system that says, “Say a sinners prayer, ask Jesus into your heart, join our church, and your salvation is secure for all eternity.” But there are many verses in the Bible that contradict those kinds of easy belief doctrines.

Moses was begging the Lord to forgive the Hebrew

people for their idolatry, and if He didn’t to blot his name out of the book of life (Exodus 32:32). The Lord replied, “Whoever has sinned against Me I will blot out of My book” (Exodus 32:33).

Jesus told the Pharisees, “I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am He, you will indeed die in your sins” (John 8:24). Implying that those who have not trusted in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will die in their sins and their name will not be in God’s Book of Life. The reason some people are not in God’s Book of Life is because they haven’t trusted in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and God has turned them over to their sinful nature (Romans 1:24).

Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” (Matthew 7:21-23).

Not every preacher who carries a Bible and preaches about Jesus will enter into the kingdom of heaven. Not every church worker or leader who always attends all the church activities will enter into the kingdom of heaven. Not everyone who profess to love Jesus will enter into the kingdom of heaven. Not everyone who says they have done many wonders in Jesus’ name will enter into the kingdom of heaven. Not everyone who says they

have cast out demons in Jesus’ name will enter into the kingdom of heaven. Not everyone who goes to church every Sunday shall enter into the kingdom of heaven. Why? Because their faith wasn’t a true and living faith; they continued to live an ungodly lifestyle.

Paul warns us that those living an ungodly lifestyle will not enter into the Kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Galatians 5:21, Ephesians 5:5). Jesus warned the Laodicean church that because of their lukewarm attitude toward Him, He will spit them out of His mouth (Revelation 3:14-19).

Peter wrote, “If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning” (2 Peter 2:20).

Have you ever sat down to think about where you will spend eternity? Everyone wants to go to heaven and not hell. It’s normal. If for example, if you attend an ungodly night club party of drunkenness and immorality and ask the question, “Who among you wants to go to heaven?” Probably all the people there would raise up their hands. They don’t want to go to hell, but unfortunately they’ve already made that decision by the lifestyle that they are living.

Paul wrote, “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified” (2 Corinthians 13:5). Have we taken the time to examine ourselves? Does our lifestyle demonstrate that we are a Christian? Our names may be in some church’s record books, but is our names in the God’s Book of Life? We may be known as “popular preachers” but are we known by God? There’s a hymn that Christians sometimes sing. The first stanza and chorus is: “There’s a great day coming, a great day coming, there’s a great day coming by and by, when the saints and the sinners shall be parted right and left, are you ready for that day to come? Chorus: Are you ready? Are you ready?

Are you ready for the judgement day? “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” Hebrews 9:27). Our eternal destiny is our choice.

NTSB REPORTS Accident Synopses

NTSB Identification: CEN21LA110 Date: January 9, 2021 Location: Cushing, OK Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-502 Injuries: None Analysis —The pilot stated that he intended to depart from a soft, muddy runway and was having a difficult time becoming airborne. When the airplane reached a spot of the runway that was not as muddy, the airplane “popped out of the mud” and reached an altitude of about 30 ft above the ground. Before he could lower the nose to gain airspeed, the left wing stalled and the airplane impacted the surrounding terrain, resulting in substantial damage to the fuselage, tail and both wings. The pilot stated that there were no mechanical anomalies with the airplane that would have precluded normal operations.

Probable Cause and Findings—The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:The pilot’s decision to take off from unsuitable terrain which resulted in an aerodynamic stall and subsequent impact with terrain.

NTSB Identification: ERA21LA167 Date: 03/31/2021 Location: Vienna, GA Aircraft: AYRES CORPORATION S2R-G6 Injuries: None Analysis—The pilot reported that he was taking off from his private airstrip with a left quartering tailwind for an aerial application flight. Due to payload and wind conditions, flying airspeed was not attained prior to his anticipated liftoff point.

The nose of the airplane began to veer to the left, and he attempted to correct the drift. He passed his decision point and attempted to avoid a ditch in his path.

The airplane impacted the northern bank of the ditch, shearing off the landing gear and damaging the propeller and spray system. After the airplane came to rest, the pilot egressed and a postaccident fire destroyed the wreckage. The pilot reported no pre-accident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Probable Cause and Findings—The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:The pilot’s improper decision to attempt a takeoff with a quartering tailwind and his failure to reject the takeoff in a timely manner, which resulted in a runway excursion.

NTSB Identification: ERA21LA292 Date: July 16, 2021 Location: Lewisburg, KY Aircraft: ROBINSON HELICOPTER COMPANY R44 II Injuries: 1 Serious, 1 Minor A Robinson R44 II was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Lewisburg, Kentucky. The commercial pilot was seriously injured, and the pilot-rated passenger received minor injuries. The helicopter was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. According to the pilot’s wife the purpose of the flight was to spray a nearby cornfield and the role of the passenger was to assist with the operation of the “AgNav mapping system.”

Prior to takeoff, the helicopter was filled with “a little over 50 gallons” of spraying solution, which resulted in the helicopter being “barely overweight”, but she and the pilot felt it would be “fine.” The pilot told her that when the helicopter took off it “just wouldn’t fly” and the low rotor rpm light illuminated. As the pilot flared to land, the

helicopter landed hard in a level attitude, bounced, touched down again, and rolled on its left side.

The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the rotor system and fuselage. It was recovered for further examination

NTSB Identification: CEN21FA330 Date: July 19, 2021 Location: Elgin, MN Aircraft: Robinson R44 Injuries: Fatal A Robinson R44 II helicopter was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Elgin, Minnesota. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial-application flight.

A witness observed the helicopter flying east-and-west aerial-application passes over a corn field, with each additional pass progressing closer toward the north end of the field being sprayed. The witness observed the helicopter fly over the power lines that crossed the corn field during two consecutive passes, but on the third pass the helicopter flew under the power lines while heading westbound. The witness had entered a nearby pole barn when he heard a loud boom, and the pole barn shook momentarily. He then exited the pole barn and saw smoke rising from where the helicopter had crashed in the corn field.

The witness and his father then responded to the accident site where they observed the helicopter engulfed in flames.

The initial impact was with a three-phase power transmission line. The western line remained intact, the center line exhibited fraying, and the eastern line was severed The power lines consisted of three (477ACSR type) 24 aluminum conducting strands over 7 steel strands. The GPS

altitude at the surface below the power lines was 1,080 ft. The frayed power line at the point of damage was about 28 ft above the ground. The corn crop under the power lines was 8-10 ft tall.

The wreckage debris path measured 292 ft between the power lines and the main wreckage. The wreckage debris path through the corn crop was on a 90° heading. The helicopter impacted terrain in a 15° descent angle, as evidenced by the damaged corn crop.

The main wreckage included remnants of the cabin, landing skids, cockpit, engine, main rotor transmission, main rotor head, main rotor blades, aft fuselage, sheaves, tail rotor drive shaft, tail boom, tail rotor gear box, and tail rotor blades.

The relatively intact product tank and its support frame was located about 15 ft north of the main wreckage. Most of the cabin and cockpit were destroyed by the post impact fire. Flight control continuity could not be established due to extensive damage sustained during impact and post impact fire. The post accident examination did not reveal any evidence of a mechanical malfunction of the helicopter or its engine that would have precluded normal flight.

The outboard 3 ft of one main rotor blade was not located during the investigation. The blade fracture exhibited damage consistent with impact with a power line. The other main rotor blade remained intact but folded in half.

The height of the corn under the power lines measured 8-10 ft. The operator stated that the helicopter is typically flown 10 ft above the crop to ensure optimal spray disbursement. According to the Robinson R44 II Pilot Operating Handbook (POH), the helicopter was 10.75 ft tall. The frayed power line at the point of damage was about 28 ft above the ground.

NTSB Identification: CEN21FA334 Date: July 25, 2021 Location: Benoit, MS Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-802 Injuries: Fatal An Air Tractor 802 agricultural airplane was substantially damaged when it was B 38 | agairupdate.com

involved in an accident near Benoit, Mississippi. The commercial pilot sustained fatal injuries. The aerial application flight was conducted under the provisions of Title 14 Federal Code of Regulations Part 137.

The airplane was operating from a 2,164 ft-long by 100-ft wide private grass agricultural airstrip, oriented about 230-degrees magnetic. According to the operator, the airplane was fueled with 225 gallons of Jet-A and loaded with 635 gallons of chemicals prior to takeoff.

Witnesses stated that they observed a normal takeoff roll. At the departure end of the runway, the airplane struck a berm at the end of the runway, went inverted, and impacted the ground.

There were no radio or distress calls heard from the pilot.

NTSB Identification: WPR21LA299 Date: July 30, 2021 Location: Tracy, CA Aircraft: SCHWEIZER AIRCRAFT CORP G-164B Injuries: None A Grumman G-164B airplane was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Tracy, California. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight.

The pilot reported that he was just beginning his 8th pass over a hay field that was located beneath high-tension power lines. He planned to repeat his previous passes by flying south below the hightension power lines, which ran diagonally across the field (northeast to southwest) and the flight path. When the pilot was about midfield, he experienced a total loss of engine power accompanied by a vibration. The pilot stated that his airspeed was about 130 mph at the time of the power loss, but it decayed rapidly. He was unable to enter a climb due to the power lines located overhead. The pilot flew about 10-15 ft above ground level under another set of power lines at the south end of the field to an adjacent field. He then began a shallow right turn to orient the

airplane parallel to a series of raised dirt beds. However, during the turn the airplane contacted the ground and several trees.

Photographs showed substantial damage to the fuselage and wings.

The wreckage was retained for further examination.

NTSB Identification: CEN21LA357 Date: August 4, 2021 Location: Mer Rouge, LA Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-602 Injuries: Minor An Air Tractor AT-602 was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Mer Rouge, Louisiana. The pilot sustained minor injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight.

The pilot reported the accident flight was the 3rd aerial application load for the day, and the airplane was loaded with about 480 gallons of insecticide and fertilizer.

Prior to the flight, the airplane was also loaded with about 150 to 160 gallons of Jet A-1 fuel. Shortly after rotation, the airplane engine lost power. The pilot conducted a forced landing to a field.

During the forced landing, the airplane impacted a soybean field and came to rest upright. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and wings.

According to a Federal Aviation Administration inspector, the airplane wing fuel tanks did not appear to contain any fuel and no evidence of fuel was found at the accident site. The airplane was recovered for further examination.

NTSB Identification: CEN21FA368 Date: August 10, 2021 Location: Strasburg, ND Aircraft: ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL S2R Injuries: Fatal A Rockwell International S2R agricultural airplane was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Strasburg, North Dakota. The pilot was fatally injured.

The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight.

An employee of the pilot, who loaded the chemical on the airplane, stated that the pilot was alert and in a good mood, as usual. She met the pilot at the loading pad at 0630, whereupon she loaded the hopper with chemical, then the pilot departed about 0645. The pilot returned to the airport at 0721 after he sprayed the first field. The airplane was rinsed and loaded with a new chemical; the pilot departed again to spray a sunflower field. She added that she had never witnessed nor heard the pilot mention any issues with the airplane’s GPS. A colleague of the pilot, who was familiar with the operation, stated that the pilot was completing his second aerial application flight of the day and intended to apply insecticide to a sunflower field. He and the pilot had sprayed this field many times before, which was always done in a northsouth racetrack pattern. He had never seen the pilot spray this field in an east-west pattern before, and that it shouldn’t be

done due to the large powerlines on the west side.

He stated that the pilot had recently experienced problems with the airplane’s GPS. A witness driving eastbound observed the airplane flying west after it exited the sunflower field. The airplane then collided with the power lines, then crashed onto a road and slid into a field.

A postaccident examination revealed three damaged power lines on the west side of the target field. The east side line was the least damaged but was still mostly intact. The center line was mostly severed with less than a third of the wire strands intact. The west side line was completely severed and lying on the ground. A separated piece of the right wing leading edge exhibited impact marks and scoring consistent with the twisted metal power line. The field of airplane debris extended west of the power lines up to the main wreckage location.

The engine and propeller had separated from the airplane and were located in the debris field, about 50 ft east of the main wreckage. The remainder of the airplane came to rest inverted in the field. The top of the vertical stabilizer and rudder were found separated and exhibited contact signatures from the power lines. Electrical burn marks, heat distress, and black soot were found on the top of the rudder. The flight controls were continuous from the cockpit to the respective control surfaces.

The airplane’s Satloc G4 GPS device and the MVP-50T engine monitor were removed and sent to the NTSB Vehicle Recorders Laboratory for data extraction. The airplane was retained for further examination.

Aeroglobo Aeronaves, Air Tractor’s South American representative and Lane Aviation dealer, celebrated the first female ag pilot to complete the turbine transition course at the company’s training center, located in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. The course includes lessons in a real cockpit with a state-of-the-art FTD level 5 simulator, the most complete in Latin America, accurately replicating normal and emergency flight conditions.

“The structure of AeroGlobo is fantastic!” says Joelize, who began her career in aviation at the age of 18, when her interest began during a

lecture she attended in 2007 at the end of high school. It was there that she put her goal of becoming a pilot into practice. With the support of her parents, she got her pilot’s license in a course in Carazinho (RS), Brazil.

Joelize left home after obtaining her pilot’s license and went to work in a company where she performed ground support, such as washing, polishing and refuelling aircraft. Whenever she could, she occupied the co-pilot position and added flight hours. Two years later, she would return to her home state to become a ➤

commercial aviation instructor at the flying club where it all started.

In 2012, Joelize had a contact in the ag aviation industry, flying activity was on the rise, and she saw the opportunity opening. She graduated as an ag pilot and was soon hired to work for a company in Goiás. “The more I knew about ag aviation, the more it fed my passion for the profession,” she says. Today she works at AeroTerra, in Luís Eduardo Magalhães, Bahia, flying an Air Tractor AT-502B. Joelize wakes up before sunrise to perform her routines, including checking the weather forecast and wind conditions and ensuring everything is in order with the aircraft to start another day of applications. “I love the everyday farm life,” she says. Joelize usually posts a little about her routine on her social networks because she believes it is a good way to show other women that ag aviation is a possible career path.

“When you close the aircraft’s window, it doesn’t matter who’s inside; it’s the success of the work that matters,” she argues. “What the farm owner wants is to see results for his investment, no matter if the pilot is a man or a woman.” And so, Joelize continues in her profession, taking

advantage of the opportunities that appear, such as the chance to take the course at Aeroglobo.

“I saw Aeroglobo’s advertisements in AgAir Update, their booths at the convention, and I wanted to get to know the company,” she reveals.

“Being able not only to know but to be the first woman to do the simulator filled me with happiness and pride.” Joelize says she has gained “valuable learning” that she will take to her job.

“Instructor Luiz Gustavo Geromini is amazing, and the simulator is very close to reality, even in emergencies.”

more women come through our training,” he said. If it is up to Joelize, this goal will be reached. “We want to have more women in the cockpit of ag aircraft throughout Brazil,” says Zaccarelli.

Soon, another woman will have the opportunity to take the course in Botucatu. Maria Santos, 38, from Itiquira (MT), will start training in September. She works in Sorriso (MT) at Grupo Daroit. “Today, companies like the Daroit Group give women opportunity to show their work, knowing that what really matters is their ability, including in the agricultural sector, which until recently was such a masculine world,” argues Maria, eager to also carry out her transition to a turbine Air Tractor.

“We want to have more women in the cockpit of ag aircraft throughout Brazil,” says Zaccarelli.
