March 2014

A Word From The State Coordinator just some important chatter Spring is almost here!! The catchy phrase “spring ahead” signals change for Americans. It’s a reminder to move clocks ahead one hour for daylight savings time. And it’s an optimistic forecast that warmer and sunnier weeks are ahead. With these seasonal changes, millions take on “spring cleaning” of homes, garages, and yards. And for motorcyclists…..it’s the start of the riding season. I know most of us still ride in the winter around here, but Spring means more riding days!! Be careful of the sand and gravel out there on the roads. Now is the time to start thinking about elections and campaigns. As I have sat and listened thru testimony on issues that affect me personally, I am truly disheartened with our Government. It is no longer “we the people”. Elected Officials are voting the way they want to. They are no longer representing their constituents….us!! OK, maybe there are a few that are representing the people of Colorado….but very few. I am not discussing parties, or left or right here, I am discussing how these folks think it’s OK to vote the way they want to. We even have a United States Senator state that he voted a particular way against the majority of his constituents because they didn’t know all the facts. What? You have got to be kidding me!! First it is his job to explain all the facts so the people can decide how he should vote. Do we not have any Statesmen/women in this country anymore? There is a difference.

Georges Pompidou: A statesman is a politician who places himself at the service of the nation. A politician is a statesman who places the nation at his service.

While ABATE’s focus is on motorcycling issues, this will be good for all aspects of your life. I have worked campaigns and caucuses for many years now. It is important that we the people wake up. I hear “oh that will never happen here”. Guess what? It is happening here on a daily basis. We as citizens, not just motorcyclists need to be vigilant.

Our elected Officials….oh wait, “lawmakers” as the media calls them work for US. I think most of you would agree, we’d be fired for performing our jobs the way some of them have this session. Hopefully we all get involved in our precinct caucuses this year!! I am reminded that sometimes we need to re-focus our activity in ABATE. All of us need to realize that it is not about me or you; it’s about the organization as a whole. Some tend to be resistant to change. Yes, change is always the unknown. But it isn’t always a bad thing. New ideas and directions are good for us. Otherwise we become stagnant. “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” Henry Ford (1863-1947), American founder of the Ford Motor Company. I really like this quote because it’s simple but has a lot of meaning. To me, it means if you want change to occur you can’t keep doing the same things and expect different results because when you repeat that action it only has one outcome. If you want to change the outcome you have to change the pattern. On that note, we are looking at ideas to start a membership drive for ABATE. If any of you have any thoughts, please contact me and I’ll get the info to the membership committee. Don’t forget the upcoming Motorcycle Expo the 27th of this April, we are still waiting on a confirmation of the location. Everything you want to know about motorcycling in one place. This is a fun event and is to raise awareness of motorcycling to the general public as part of our Operation Save A Life program. Come on out and join us for a fun day!! Lots of ABATE events coming up so mark your calendars. Happy St Patrick’s Day!!! Until next month ride safe and watch the sand!! Terry Howard

RANDY’S RANT

COLD COMFORT,WINTRY WARMTH

For the longest time I was a very happy warm weather rider and just didn‛t care to

ride in the colder weather. In the last ten years or so I have been changing that because I enjoy riding so much, and there are a number of events such as the Santa Cops Toy Run that I participate in that happen in the winter. Until recently I was able to tough it out when the cold started turning my fingers and toes to popsicles, and frosting my beard so it looked like a Christmas tree. As I am getting older, (damn!) I find that toughing it out doesn‛t work and the comfort level is starting to decrease. Wearing multiple layers to mitigate this helps just so far since I can only put so much on at one time and have to stop just short of looking like the Michelin Man. Any more and it is hard to move and keep control of things, especially since the extremities are the things that stiffen up the quickest and are also the main control points when riding.

When it is 95 out and you are thinking that a nice 95 mph breeze will help, you are in for a blast furnace surprise. The only way I have found to cool down on the bike is to either increase altitude, or ride into a lake, or both! I definitely prefer the former since the top of the mountain is infinitely more scenic than the bottom of the lake. Randy Mumma, (Squirrel) hondarm@skybeam.com

I recently decided to purchase heated gloves and socks. My core doesn‛t get very cold so my normal clothing choices work well. The extremities however don‛t get the benefit of large veins and arteries like most of the rest of the body. So far so good. We will see next February when I ride down to the swap meet in Denver from up here in Fort Collins. Two years ago when my wife and I rode down, The temp was a balmy 33 degrees and we were only able to stand it from home to the Waffle House in Longmont. After a very hot breakfast and about 7 cups of coffee, we were able to continue down to the swap meet. I don‛t want to feel like that again and my wife of course steadfastly refuses to even think about getting behind the bars unless it is at least 50 degrees. Being too warm is also less than pleasant. www.abateofcolo.org

NORTHEAST REGIONAL REPORT ABATE of Colorado is dedicated to the freedom of the road and banding together to preserve those freedoms. What are the threats to our freedoms to ride? There may not be anything that just jumps out at you right now but there are always the background issues of mandatory helmets, age restrictions on those who can be passengers, what you can and cannot do to your bike, transportation issues such as road design, and working to make the MOST program work the way it was intended to. ABATE of Colorado needs all motorcyclists to be part of the solution by joining and supporting motorcyclists rights. As you all may or may not know, membership has slipped and we, as ABATE, need to work to let our fellow motorcyclists know about ABATE’s mission and convince them to join us to help preserve all motorcyclist’s freedoms! There are membership applications in the Spokesman, you can get some from your District or Regional Representative or contact the state office. Keep one handy to give to your friends or relatives and encourage them to join ABATE. For every 5 members you sign up, you will get a year’s free membership. One thing the State ABATE Board has discussed in the past to save money is to have the Spokesman available only online or via email due to the increases in printing costs. Let us know how you feel about that. The state budget is tight so maintaining service while cutting costs as much as possible is important. ASMI, is available so keep your eye on the ABATE website for classes. If you want to have one in your area, let us know and we will get something scheduled. Being prepared in case of an emergency is important! Both the Basic and Advanced courses will be offered this next year. Have a great 2014! Be safe and ride often! PRESCRIPTION ERRORS

A close friend of mine is a nurse. She and I often have discussions about the cross over between our professions. My friend and I have some colorful discussions and suffice it to say, she and I do not always agree. Usually, our conversations conclude with our agreement that the best way to prevent medical errors and lawsuits is to educate patients and their advocates. Recently, my nurse friend told me the story of a patient that suffered severe, almost fatal, complications after she received an overdose in the hospital of a medication she had been taking for years. The patient had been taking drug “X” for years in a particular dosage. She knew what the pills looked like; she knew what her dosage was and when to take the pills. While she was hospitalized for an unrelated condition, this patient was given several hundred times her normal dose of her medication. When an investigation was conducted as to how this error occurred, it was determined to have resulted from a decimal point. Imagine, almost losing your life to a punctuation mark. The doctor had written “5.0 mg” on the prescription. The decimal point was interpreted (apparently reasonably so due to sloppy writing) as a “zero,” and as a result, the patient was given multiple doses of 500 mg of her medication during her hospital stay. As part of the investigation, after recovering from the overdose, the patient was interviewed. During the interview the patient stated: “I thought that the medication nurses were giving me was wrong. The pill was bigger and did not say the same thing on it as the one I took for years. I took the pills anyway because I was in the hospital and, I don’t know, I guess I just figured they knew what they were doing.” Since hearing about this incident, I cannot stop thinking about the fact that the patient knew the medication was wrong, and she took it anyway. Why didn’t she say something? I asked my friend: “what would have happened if the patient would have questioned the nurse?” Her response, “I don’t know for sure, but if it were me I would have stopped to

check to see if she was right. I am human. Before telling her I knew I was right about the dose I would have looked it up.” She further explained, “but I would have looked at the order that was entered incorrectly. To catch the error the patient would have had to tell me that she was supposed to be taking 5 mg.” Patients and their care givers must know what medications their doctors have prescribed by complete name and dosage and be familiar with how often the medication is to be taken. In light of the thousands of drugs on the market and the differing uses (including “off label uses”) of those drugs, it is imperative that patients know exactly what their doctors have prescribed. Patients must check to be sure that the pharmacists have filled their prescriptions correctly (or that the pills look the same in the hospital as they do at home). Patients and care givers must ask questions if something does not look right. Better to be a little embarrassed than a lot dead. The FDA has published a list of abbreviations that are not to be used by doctors when authoring prescriptions. Take a look at your prescriptions to be sure that these abbreviations are not being used. They have been known to lead to errors in the amount of medication given and in the directions for how often, when and where mediations are to be administered. The list can be downloaded at: http://www.ismp.org/ tools/errorproneabbreviations.pdf. Angela E. McGraw is an attorney at Fleishman & Shapiro P.C. LEGISLATIVE Hello CONCERNED Motorcyclists (and I use that term questionably!), I realize that most of ABATE’s members grew up in the 1960s and there still might be lingering hatred toward big government, but where is that political activism that was so prevalent back then: demonstrations; protests; “Stop the War”! My big question this month is: “WHY AREN’T YOU MORE POLITICALLY ACTIVE?” We took a survey last year and Legislation was the #1 concern that ABATE should be focusing on. I agree, a State Motorcycle Rights Organization should primarily be focusing on Legislation and Motorcyclist’s Rights. But we’re a grass-roots organization, and that means we get our legislative “clout” from our membership. Voicing our opinions and educating our lawmakers is the only way ABATE can affect legislation. We don’t have a hugely funded PAC or a high-priced professional lobbyist and even though protests and demonstrations might get you on the nightly news, they really don’t have positive results with lawmakers (in my opinion). So how can ABATE get its membership more legislatively active? We’ve presented a “Boot Camp” with informative Legislative seminars and even offered to bring this training to ABATE Districts to educate those members who couldn’t attend the “Boot Camp”. I formed a Legislative Team (LegTeam) comprised of District Reps and District Legislative Affairs Officers whom I try to update with the latest Legislative information so they can easily pass this information on to the membership. the State Capitol is to build a team (Stump’s Army) made up of ABATE members who are constituents of Senators and Representatives from every Senate District (35) and every House District (65) in Colorado. Even though I’m down at the Capitol trying to talk to Senators and Representatives as ABATE’s lobbyist, I don’t have as much influence as a constituent/voter does. In my Legislative article last month, I mentioned 3 easy steps to becoming more legislatively active. This month I’d like to know if all this information is helpful. Have you become more politically aware and concerned? If not, what can ABATE do to persuade you to care more about your motorcycle freedoms? Please take 5 minutes and let me know if you’ve become more active or why you’re not (stumpandval@msn.com). I’d really appreciate some feedback, even constructive criticism. Of course, all of this is probably a futile effort on my part, as those of you reading this are legislatively active and those who aren’t active won’t be reading this! Oh well, I got to blow off a little steam anyway! Now, on to what ABATE members “say” they really care about! On the state level, SB14-020 (MOST Bill) hasn’t been scheduled for a House Transportation and Energy Committee hearing yet. Which means, those of you who are constituents of Representatives on that committee, still have time to send them e-mails urging them to support this bill. Once the bill passes out of the committee, everyone needs to contact their Representative urging them to support SB14-020. As I’ve mentioned in just about every one of my past 14 articles, if you don’t know who your Representative is or if he/she is on the House Transportation and

Energy Committee, feel free to contact me: stumpandval@msn.com I’m sorry if I sound a little bitter in this article, but I just don’t understand why everyone isn’t more politically active in ABATE. I realize that everyone has a life outside of ABATE (except maybe a few of us) but don’t you care about your freedoms? I’ve tried to make contacting your legislators as easy as possible. (It takes about 5 minutes if you join Stump’s Army). Thank you very much to the small percentage of ABATE members that have volunteered and actually do write their lawmakers. I appreciate it very much. What about the rest of you? Technically, you’re not doing this for me; you’re doing this for yourself because you’re concerned about laws being passed that affect your lives. I still have a lot of room in Stump’s Army and I’m missing 12 Senate District constituents and 29 House District constituents. So how about volunteering? I’m not even asking for a monetary contribution, just a little bit of your time! Again, thanks to those of you that have volunteered already. Stump State Legislative Affairs Officer and Concerned Citizen.

e have quite a few things going on at the federal level. As usual we have the E-15 bills, the black box bill, and the motorcycle only checkpoint bills. A couple new things have been added. The U.S.House of Representatives has passed a Farm Bill that would end a federal subsidy for bio fuel pumps in rural areas. The measure passed by a 251-166 vote and costs the taxpayers $956.4 billion. The U.S.Senate will have voted on this but the time you read this. Pres. Obama is expected to sign the bill. This ending of the subsidy means less bio fuel pumps and less E-15. The NTSB has released their list of top ten priorities for safety improvements. Motorcycles were not on the immediate list, but the NTSB did reference a motorcycle helmet law deeper within the text of one of the top ten bullets. This is actually taking a step backwards from their addressing mc safety in 2011,when they advocated for voluntary helmet use and rider education equally.

Issue # 03-14

March 2014

The CDC has finally responded to Sen. Petri’s letter that asked for the CDC to focus on areas relative to their expertise. The CDC response was typical government gobbledygook, saying they are addressing mc safety like any other public health issue (remember, they first had to classify motorcyclists as a disease so they could harass us and do their studies and recommendations!!!) The CDC says that 41% of all mc fatalities in 2010 were NOT wearing helmets. By using their own “facts”, that means 59% of all mc fatalities WERE wearing helmets In multiple conversations between the MRF and the CDC it is clear that the CDC has no interest in rider education, and that rider ed programs and mc awareness campaigns play no part in preventing crashes. The CDC believes we need a national mandatory helmet law. We have 2 more states--Ohio and Washington-- who are working on establishing road guard programs. It’s great to see these programs catch on so that we can “police” are own runs and events. Hopefully the road guard will catch on in more states. I’ll give a more comprehensive list of what is going on in other states next month as state legislatures work through their processes. Till then, ride safe, ride smart, ride sober. See ya on down the road, Bear

bailing us out and hosting the shindig. Great job by all!!! We are talking about a mountain run some time around July 4th so we will keep you posted on details. There are events in other districts so attend as many as you can. Ride safe, ride smart, ride sober.

District 11 We’ve been finalizing plans for our annual St. Patrick’s Day Party to be held on March 15th at the VFW in Johnson Village. Make plans to come out and join us. Discussion continued on giving the group a nickname, many think that it is a good idea but the issue was tabled until next meeting so that everyone could give serious thought to possible names. Last but not least we held a very successful ‘poker walk’ in Leadville on Valentine’s Day. We sold 74 hands and took in $400.00. Prizes of $66.00 for high hand and $33.00 for low hand were awarded. Neither of the winners was an ABATE member; but now they are. A hearty thanks to all those folks that joined in and to the businesses that supported us. With the weather starting to warm-up a bit I hope to see you on the road. Ride Safe

the BOTW, I passed around a list of breakout sessions that were presented at some of the BOTWs and Meetingof-the-Minds (MOTM) I attended over the years, because some members are thinking of attending this year’s BOTW in Frisco, CO. and wanted to know what actually happens at the BOTW; 4) Val then gave an update on ASMI. We had some interest in bringing an ASMI class to D-16 but only got about 6 or 7 commitments, so Val is contacting D-17 in hopes of getting some of them interested and joining up for an ASMI class. More on this later; 5) Lastly, I mentioned upcoming events. While you’re marking your calendar with the changes to our May and June Meeting dates, mark these dates also: Tuesday, 3/4 Precinct Caucuses; Sat., 3/8, D-10’s Corned Beef Bash; Friday, 3/28, Lobby Day at the Capitol; Sunday, 4/27, ABATE’s Motorcycle Expo; Sat., 6/3, D-10’s Blessings-of-the-Bikes (always a fun run); and BOTW on 6/6 & 6/7. Thanks again to you 25%ers! Hope to see some of you 75%ers at our meeting next month: Sunday, 3/9, 9:00 am @ Bear Creek Restaurant. Try it – you just might have some fun!!! Stump

Lafayette, CO 80026 303-642-7118 dcbear1985@aol.com Hey D13, I want to thank everybody who came out to the Sweetheart’s Dance at the Rock-N-Ranch on Feb 8. We had a great time. Despite trepidations that we might not have enough food, we actually ended up with enough to feed a small army. Thanks again for all who brought food, and a huge thanks to Belva for talking Ben into letting us use his place for the party, and to Ben for

Hello D-16, Thanks to D-16’s 10%ers! (10/90 Rule - 10% of an organization does 90% of the work!). Actually in our case we’re more like 25%ers! Thanks for attending and participating in our meetings. As a summary for those who couldn’t attend (and I’m sure attendance will increase when the snow is off the ground and we can ride our bikes to the meetings – right?) we talked mostly about Legislation. Again, I won’t mention any of that as I’d just be repeating what I wrote in my Legislative Report for the Spokesman. Important business we discussed was: 1) moving our May D-16 meeting from the 2nd Sunday, which is Mother’s Day, to the 3rd Sunday, which is May 18th; 2) also moving our June meeting from June 8th to June 1st, because of the conflict with the Bestof-the-West (BOTW); 3) speaking of
