Word Awareness Procedure 1. Share several compound words with children . Say the words, and ask children to repeat them . Help them identify the two parts of each compound word . 2. Tell children you are going to ask them to replace one part of the compound word with another word that you share . 3. Begin with having them replace the second, rather than the first, word in the compound . This will likely be easier because you can prompt them by repeating just the first word in the initial compound word . For example, “Say jellybean . Now change bean to fish . Jelly_____ . ” 4. After children have demonstrated ease with replacing the second word in a compound, change the activity to having them replace the initial word in the compound . See the sample words in the tables that follow . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Using objects may support children in this manipulation of words . Provide children with three blocks or other objects . Have them place two directly in front of them, side by side . As you provide the prompts, ask children to point to the first one (on the left) as they say the first word in the compound . Then, have them point to the second block (on the right) as they say the second word in the compound . Have them physically remove the block representing the part of the compound to be replaced . Then, they should put the third block in its place and say the new word . Replace It Objective Students will substitute one word in a compound word with another .
