Word Awareness Procedure 1. Tell children that sometimes, two words can be put together to form a new word . Orally present two parts of a compound word, and ask children to put the parts together to create a new word . 2. Provide examples to ensure that they understand the task . For example, news and paper make newspaper . 3. If you are using picture cards, reveal the corresponding picture after children have guessed the word . Then, hand one card to each child . (Pictures are available in the Digital Resources, and may also be downloaded from the internet or found in magazines or other print media .) 4. After all cards are handed out, children can conceal the pictures and provide word part clues to help their classmates guess the words before revealing the pictures . Differentiate or Extend ▲ You may wish to model blending of these words by pausing between the two parts and then saying them closer together while bringing your hands closer together until you say them as a single word: news—paper, newspaper . Guess My Word Objective Students will blend individual words into compound words . Overview The teacher presents segmented compound words, and children blend them to create the compound word . Revisit this activity throughout the day, such as when children are putting on their jackets to play outdoors or cleaning up after a project . Materials picture cards of compound words available in the Digital Resources (optional); markers or crayons (optional) School-Home Connection Have children draw a picture (or provide pictures) of any of the compound words you shared .
