Rhyming Procedure 1. Prepare for the activity by placing one object per rhyming pair in each bag . For example, put a rock in one bag and a sock in the other bag . (Sample items are shown on the next page .) 2. Ask each child to withdraw an object from one bag . As each object is withdrawn, help children identify it by reviewing its name . Pronounce the name clearly, and ensure that children are using correct pronunciation . Have each child place the item removed from the bag on the floor or table in front of them where it can be easily seen by all . 3. Tell children that each object in the second bag rhymes with one of the objects they selected . Withdraw one of the items from the second bag . 4. Children decide whether their item rhymes with the object from the bag . The child who has the rhyming object claims the second item and places it beside its match . Encourage all children to repeat the rhyming pair with you to confirm that they rhyme . Comment on the rhyming elements of the word pair . 5. Continue withdrawing items one at a time from the second bag until all items have been paired up . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Share examples and nonexamples of rhyming pairs . Ask children, “Would we be correct if we matched cat with pail? Do those words rhyme?” ▲ Have children search their indoor and outdoor environments to find additional rhyming pairs of objects to place in the bags . ▲ Make the objects and the bags available in centres and for independent play .
