Rhyming Hickory Dickory Dock
Objective
Students will produce rhyming words .
Overview
Children listen to and chant the nursery rhyme, “Hickory Dickory Dock .” The teacher suggests changing some of the words in the poem, and children use rhymes to create new lines .
Materials
paper (optional); markers or crayons (optional)
Procedure 1. Share the nursery rhyme “Hickory Dickory Dock .” Help children learn the first verse shown on the next page . (The entire rhyme can be found in the Digital Resources .) 2. Tell children you are going to change the poem . Rather than “Hickory Dickory Dock,” you are going to say, “Hickory Dickory Dare .” Ask children how you should complete the verse . Provide examples as needed, such as, “The mouse ran everywhere .” or “The mouse went to the fair .” Talk about rhymes, explaining what they are and sharing examples, and provide feedback to children’s suggestions . 3. Change the rhyme to “Hickory Dickory Down .” Begin to chant it, and encourage children to complete the verse . Try other versions, and encourage children to suggest other versions . Examples are included on the following page . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Some children will quickly generate rhyming phrases; others will not catch on as quickly . Affirm that words rhyme when they do, and note—gently—when they do not . Return to the original version, and draw children’s attention to the rhyming words dock and clock . Ask children to notice how similar the words sound . The beginnings of the words are different, but both end in ock. ▲ In writing, record some of the new rhymes and allow children to illustrate them . The rhymes and the illustrations may be displayed in the room and revisited occasionally . School-Home Connection Invite family members to share their favourite nursery rhymes . They may write them or teach them to their children to share orally . If children are interested, create new versions of several of the rhymes . sample sample 78
