Rhyming Procedure 1. Sit in a circle with children . Tell them you are going to play a rhyming game . Remind them that rhymes are words that sound alike at the end, and provide examples of rhymes . 2. Begin the activity by holding a skein of yarn and saying a word, such as dog . (See the table on the next page for some other rhyming words .) Ask if anyone can share a rhyme for your word . Allow nonsense words, but be sure to clarify that they are not real words . Nevertheless, they rhyme! 3. Hold the loose strand of the yarn, and gently toss the skein to a child who offers a rhyme . 4. Have the child hold onto their part of the yarn strand, and have them toss the skein to another child who provides another rhyme for the word . 5. A yarn web is formed as children toss the skein to one another . They can even toss the yarn back to a child who already had a turn . When children can generate no more rhymes, congratulate them on the many words they generated . Then, suggest they begin a new round with a new word, such as kick . Have children continue building the web with a new set of words . Make sure that every child has the opportunity to participate and hold part of the yarn . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Use this game to focus on initial sounds instead of rhymes . Toss the yarn as words beginning with the same sound are generated (big, blue, baby, boy, bike, beet, bake, boat, banana) . This modification supports emerging phoneme awareness .
