Sort the Cards
Syllable Awareness Procedure 1. Share picture cards of familiar objects with children, or take digital photos of objects in the classroom or outside . Print the pictures and glue them to cardstock . Be sure children can identify the object on each card . (Sample pictures may be found in the Digital Resources .) 2. Begin with an object that has either a one- or twosyllable name . Show the card, and ask children to say the name of the object pictured . Together, count the number of syllables in the object’s name . Encourage children to clap the syllables as they say the name . Continue to show cards and count syllables . 3. Have children help you sort the cards by number of syllables, perhaps by creating columns on the floor or in a pocket chart . Point to the cards in each group, and name the cards together . Confirm that they are in the correct group . 4. Distribute the cards so each child has one . Let each child name the object on their card and then place it in the correct group of one-syllable or two-syllable objects . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Begin with pictures of objects with one-syllable and twosyllable names . Later, add pictures of objects with threesyllable names . ▲ Support student learning by telling them the number of syllables in the word . Then, have them tell you what the syllables are . ▲ Extend this activity by making cards available for children to use on their own . Overview The teacher shares picture cards with children and asks them to identify the objects pictured, and then they count the number of syllables in each object’s name . Children sort the cards according to the number of syllables in the objects’ names . Materials picture cards of objects that have one-syllable, two-syllable, and three-syllable names (available in the Digital Resources) School-Home Connection Encourage children to bring pictures of objects from home .
