Syllable Awareness Procedure 1. Share several two-syllable words with children . Say the words and ask children to repeat them . Help them identify the two syllables in the word . 2. Tell the children you are going to ask them to replace one of the syllables in the word with one that you share . See the tables on the next page for suggested words and prompts . 3. Begin with a few compound words consisting of singlesyllable words, such as backbone . Ask children to say the word and then replace bone with ache . Prompt them by repeating the first syllable only and helping them add the new second syllable . Assist them with saying the word backache . Try several compound words as these will be easier than two-syllable words that are not compounds . Shift from substituting the second syllable to substituting the first syllable . 4. Next, share a few two-syllable words that contain affixes as targets for substitution . For example, have children change the er in bigger to est, forming the word biggest . 5. Later, after children have demonstrated ease with replacing words in compounds and affixes in words, try two syllable words that are not compounds . These will likely be more difficult . Provide support as needed . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Using objects may support children in this manipulation of words . Provide children with three blocks or other objects . Have them place two directly in front of them, side by side . As you provide the prompts, ask children to point to the first one (on the left) as they say the first syllable, then point to the second block (on the right) as they say the second syllable . Have them physically remove the block representing the syllable to be replaced . Then, have them put the third block in its place and say the new word . Substitute the Syllable Objective Students will segment syllables in words and substitute one syllable with another . Overview The teacher says a word and then directs children to replace one syllable in the word with a different syllable . Materials blocks (optional) School-Home Connection Provide a list of the easier syllable substitution prompts for parents to try with children . Encourage them to try substituting syllables in familiar words, including their sample samplenames if appropriate .
