Onset and Rime Awareness Procedure 1. Teach children the song and actions for “Ring Around the Rosy .” (A version of the song is provided on the next page .) Have children sing the song as they walk or skip in a circle and hold hands . On the final line, have them drop their hands and all fall down . 2. After children have played, tell them to hold hands and walk or skip in a circle, but instead of falling, you will tell them what to do in a silly way—as a broken word . For example, if you want them to jump, you will say “/j/—/ŭmp/!” If you want them to stomp their feet, you will say, “/st/—/ŏmp/!” (Suggested actions are presented in the table on the next page .) 3. Begin the song in the traditional way, singing and walking or skipping around in a circle . Provide the clue in the third line by segmenting a one-syllable word into its onset and rime . On the final line, have children say the word (with your help if needed) and then perform the action . 4. Repeat the song using a number of different actions . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Encourage the children to suggest different actions . As needed, modify the segmentation clue to suit the action . For example, if a child offers a two-syllable word (such as curtsy), either segment the word into its initial sound and then the remainder of the word, or into syllables . ▲ Try segmenting words into phonemes instead of onsets and rimes . ▲ Have children provide the segmentation clues .
