Onset and Rime Awareness Procedure 1. Select a puppet, and give it an alliterative two-word name (so the onsets of the words are identical) . For example, call a frog puppet Freddy Frog, call a ladybug puppet Lizzie Ladybug, or call a snake puppet Snazzy Snake . If the puppet is a person, use names such as Chipper Charley or Brave Brooke . Point out that both words in the name begin with the same sound(s) . 2. Have the puppet says everyone’s name with the same beginning sound . Model this with your name . Instead of Ms. Holly, Freddy Frog will say Ms. Frolly . Talk about the sound change . 3. Have the puppet say the names of several children . Note: Practice with children’s names prior to implementing this activity so you can model the accurate substitution . 4. Invite a volunteer to hold the puppet . Encourage children to say other words using the target onset: bookcase/frookcase and sink/frink . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Make the puppet available for later play so children can spontaneously engage in phonological play . Join individuals or small groups to support and extend their phonological play . ▲ Introduce different puppets on later days, and repeat the naming activity . Puppet Play Objective Students will substitute onsets in words . Overview The teacher introduces a puppet, giving it a two-word name with both words beginning with the same onset . The puppet speaks its name and helps children say their own names with the same onset . Children listen to the puppet pronounce a variety of words, and those who wish are given a turn with the puppet .
