Trip! Trap
Onset and Rime Awareness Procedure 1. Read or tell children the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff . 1. Have children help you construct a bridge over which toy animals may pass . Next to the bridge, place a figure to represent the troll . 2. Show children a collection of animals that they know and can name, and explain that each animal wishes to cross the bridge . Select one animal to start, and begin to move it across the bridge . 3. Ask a child to play the troll and say, “Who’s that crossing over my bridge?” The troll will only permit the animal to pass safely if it can say its name without the first part (the onset of the initial syllable) . For example, a horse would say /ôrs/ and a frog would say /ŏg/ . 4. Allow each child to select an animal to cross the bridge, and help children name the animal when challenged by the troll . Note: Only use animal names that begin with consonant sounds or blends because there is no onset to delete in words that begin with vowel sounds (such as eel and ape) . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Encourage the children to delete the onset of the words “Trip! Trap!” as they cross over the bridge . Guide them to say “Ip! Ap!” Try deleting the onsets from other onesyllable words . ▲ Keep the animals and the bridge materials at a centre so children can revisit them as they wish . Trip! Trap! Objective Students will delete onsets in words . Overview The teacher reads or tells the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff in which three goats, one at a time, cross a bridge guarded by a troll . Using toy animals, children reenact the story in a modified way . As each animal “trip traps” across the bridge, the troll demands that it needs to say part of its name to pass to the other side . Materials any age-appropriate version of the book The Three Billy Goats Gruff; blocks or other objects to serve as a bridge; selected toy animals (see recommendations in the table on the next page); toy figure to represent the troll School-Home Connection Allow each child a chance to take home a copy of the book to share with their family and teach the game . You may also wish to invite children to bring their own toy animals to use with the game . sample sample 132
