Phoneme Awareness Procedure 1. Prepare sound bingo cards (use the blank templates from the Digital Resources) . All cards should target the same sounds, but no two cards should be identical . (See the sample card on the next page .) 2. Distribute the cards, keeping one for yourself, and make sure children can identify the objects pictured on their cards . Provide children with chips to mark their cards . 3. Have children find an object on their cards that begins with the sound you call out . Model the task by saying a sound, such as /m/, and finding an object that starts with /m/ on your card . Name the picture, emphasising the first sound . Place a chip on the picture . Ask children to share pictures on their cards that begin with /m/ . 4. Play the game . Instruct children to say “Bingo!” when they have covered three pictures in a row, and continue playing until all pictures on children’s cards are covered with chips . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Allow children to work with partners if they choose . ▲ Once a child has “Bingo!”, allow them to call out the sounds for their peers in the next round . Letter Connection ▲ Create a stack of letter cards based on the letter-sound correspondences children have learned . Draw a card, or choose a child to draw a card . Display the card, identify the sound, and have children search for a picture on their bingo cards that corresponds with the sound . Sound Bingo Objective Students will identify initial phonemes in words . Overview Children each receive a game card with pictures of various objects . As the teacher says a sound, each child finds an object on their card that begins with that sound . They place a chip on the picture, and when they have three chips in a row, they exclaim, “Bingo!” Materials bingo card template (available in the Digital Resources); chips (or other markers); letter cards (optional) School-Home Connection Send home bingo cards and chips with children so they can play Sound Bingo at home with their families .
